From the Foundation Board

A Message from Our President Teachers, staff, coaches and administrators spent their summer preparing for an unprecedented school year. In addition to putting extraordinary effort into creating a safe in-person learning environment, they diligently prepared to move to remote instruction on short notice—a change that came sooner than anyone had hoped. As disappointing as it is when students are outside of our school buildings, the hard work, tenacity and flexibility proves our district’s strong commitment to students and families. Acknowledging this commitment is more important now than ever. Students and teachers are working harder than ever and the district is facing depleted funds and new expenses both to meet health and safety guidelines and to accommodate at-home learning. Like all districts across Pennsylvania, State College is facing significant budget constraints and anticipates a shortfall totaling millions of dollars over the next several years. The Education Foundation is committed to partnering with you and our community to do all we can to make sure students and teachers can learn and teach at home or safely and securely in their classrooms. Together, we can help our district continue to lead through these changing times.

I’m so grateful to recognize the many individuals, families and businesses who supported our students, families and teachers this year. THANK YOU!

The Mardi Lowry McDonough ’87 Student Opportunity Fund & Grant Program The State College community lost a wonderful teacher and a dear friend who made a difference in the lives of countless students and her fellow educators. Mardi Lowry McDonough ’87 passed away June 1 following a battle with breast cancer. In partnership with her family, the Education Foundation is honoring her memory by naming the Student Opportunity Fund & Grant Program in her honor. A lifelong resident of State College, Mardi graduated from State High in 1987. She spent her 27 years in the State College Area School District teaching 6th grade Math, English, and Science, starting at Ferguson Township Elementary and then at Park Forest Middle School. Mardi’s daughters are also State High graduates. “In recognition of her own experience, the experiences of her daughters Colleen and Grace, her exemplary career as a teacher, and her honorable service to teachers and the community, the Education Foundation board is privileged

to name the Student Opportunity Fund & Grant Program in Mardi’s honor,” said Board President Chris Buchignani. “We are delighted that we are able to work with her family on this opportunity to continue to impact our students, teachers and the entire State College community through this fund and grant program.” Mardi’s family will attend an annual gathering with grant winners to celebrate their initiative and achievements. Also, in recognition Continued on Page 4

Retired Educator Becomes First Donor to Commit a Planned Gift to Education Foundation Sherry Farrall’s desire to support SCASD is built on 31 years of working in State High’s Counseling and Learning Enrichment Program, from 1970 to 2001. Through a fund at the Centre Foundation, Sherry supports professional development opportunities for faculty, but she also wanted to do something for students. “I had not heard of the Mental Health Matters Fund until receiving the (SCASD Education Foundation) newsletter and was looking for a District initiative to financially support that would directly benefit students,” she said. “The Mental Health Matters Fund does that and matches what I spent 31 years trying to do – helping students and their families.” “I make annual gifts to a number of local charities, but I wanted to make significant gifts to organizations that provide services in areas that are meaningful to me,” she continued,

explaining her decision to set up a planned gift to the Education Foundation’s Mental Health Matters Fund in her will.

Sherry’s commitment to a planned gift will hopefully encourage others to consider making the Education Foundation part of their charitable legacy. “The Education Foundation has just a few years under its belt and we’ve really been focused on building a recurring, Continued on Page 6

You Want to Make a Bigger Impact… Is Planned Giving Right for You? Every donor wants to make an impact. Your annual support or gifts to specific initiatives benefit students and teachers directly in the current school year. There’s also a way to make a significant difference in the future, which is a great option for some donors. Planned Gifts are a way for donors to make a charitable commitment as part of their financial or estate plan. These strategies allow donors to make a more significant impact on their favorite organizations without losing control of assets during their lifetime, as described by a donor who has recently made a bequest to the Education Foundation. With 31 years working in State High’s Counseling and Learning Enrichment Program, Sherry Farrall chose planned Continued on Page 6 www.scasdfoundation.org

annual donor base for Student Opportunity grants, along with funding special projects like the Mental Health Matters Fund, Memorial Field renovations, and most recently the COVID-19 support for families,” said Board President Chris Buchignani. “We were thrilled to receive Sherry’s call, not only because we’re grateful for her gift, but also because it gave us a little

giving to make a long-term, significant impact on students. Read her story in this issue of FOUNDATION. Sherry recently became the first donor to make a commitment to a planned gift that will benefit students through the Education Foundation. Planned gifts come in different forms, the most popular of which is a standard revocable charitable bequest in your will. You may also designate a charity as the beneficiary of an investment vehicle (e.g. Qualified Retirement Plans, individual stocks or mutual funds), both of which can provide significant tax savings to your estate and heirs. If planned giving sounds like it might be an opportunity for you, start by talking to your financial advisor. SCASDEF Executive Director Paul Olivett can help you facilitate your gift when you’re ready and can be reached at pgo11@scasd.org or (814) 883-8067. l

push to start thinking longer-term about the impact of our work.” Executive Director Paul Olivett agrees. “Sherry’s commitment to a planned gift will hopefully encourage others to consider making the Education Foundation part of their charitable legacy.” “Giving through my will seemed to be the best way to do this to assure that I can meet my own financial needs and make a significant impact on something I care about,” Sherry said. On behalf of SCASD students, faculty and families, the Education Foundation thanks Sherry and all the generous donors who contribute to our thriving district. l

Planned giving leaves a legacy. Opportunities for planned gifts include: ● Bequests ● Charitable gift annuities ● Life insurance or retirement plan designation ● Real estate ● And many other options ● To consider a planned gift, start by speaking to your financial planner.
