THE FATS!
Don’t forget to include fat in your baby’s diet! Fat is essential for baby’s growth as well as brain development. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that infants and young toddlers get about half their calories from this nutrient. Avocados, oils, olives, fish like salmon or sardines, and nut butters are all great ways to help baby get important unsaturated fats and help your baby to like these flavors. Aim to offer fats in small amounts at each meal. Here are ways to include fat in your little one’s day: Slice an avocado to make a wonderful finger food. You can also mash it on toast ‘fingers’ or add it to a smoothie. Smear nut butters thinly on banana or toast, or even blend into plain yogurt with fruit.
Bake sweet potatoes or other root vegetables in strips with olive, coconut, or canola oil. Serve scrambled eggs made with olive oil or butter. Offer shredded cheese or bite-sized cubes of cheese if your little one is ready.
