Ones to watch in health this Parliament The outcome of the 2015 General Election surprised many within Westminster. However with a majority of just 12, the next five years will pose challenges for the Conservative Government in maintaining its authority.

In such situations backbench MPs can tend to experience an upsurge in their authority and strength, being able to flex their demands in return for key votes on core issues.

In terms of health policy, little new legislation is expected but competent and efficient service management whilst simultaneously putting the system through reforms around new care models will pose major challenges. There will be continuity with the re-appointment of Jeremy Hunt as Health Secretary and a desire to provide the electorate with a simple package of measures that will improve their NHS experience such as seven day working, improved GP appointment access, named accountable clinicians and better care quality – though how such pledges will be funded remains arguably one of this Government’s biggest headaches.

George Freeman as Life Sciences Minister and Jane Ellison as Public Health Minister also both retain their posts. For Freeman the next 12 months looks set to be make or break with the Accelerated Access Review a focal point for trying to improve access to the latest treatments and devices.

For Ellison overseeing the introduction of plain packaged cigarettes, further work on improving dementia care and driving forward the diabetes prevention strategy look set to be on top of the in-tray.

There are some new faces at the Department and the general feeling is that Health has got a strong team. Alistair Burt returns to Government to manage what looks like tricky relationships with local authorities and other stakeholders around ever tightening social care budgets and implementing elements of the Care Act bequeathed by his predecessor Norman Lamb. Whether mental health continues to feature so highly in Government rhetoric and in spending commitments will be keenly watched by campaigners for improved services. Ben

Gummer picks up the portfolio of care quality and managing potentially difficult relationships with the NHS staff. David Prior takes the Lords Health brief from Earl Howe and will oversee productivity and NHS finances, which look set to be big news, and also NHS England performance and accountability.

The Shadow Health team currently stays the same but changes are expected in the Autumn when a new leader is announced. Two of the current team are in the running with Andy Burnham and Liz Kendall vying to take over from Ed Miliband.

Alongside the Ministers and Shadow Ministers we have featured some of the last Parliament’s healthcare champions and potential new faces to watch out for over the next five years. Their influence in what promises to be a fascinating and surprising Parliament will be worth watching.
