Chamber Recognizes National Manufacturing Day The Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce, in collaboration with its partners in business, education and government, recognized manufacturing week Oct. 3 through 7. Manufacturing week is a celebration of modern manufacturing meant to inspire the next generation of manufacturers. Throughout the week, local partners in education, manufacturing and business recognized the significance of manufacturing to the local economy and celebrated the strong business and education partnerships that have forged in our community. On Weds., Oct. 5, students from South Western and Hanover Public school districts participated in panel discussions with employees in the manufacturing sector, allowing the students a glimpse into education paths, skills, salary and workforce demand associated with careers in manufacturing. Later in the day, these students, along with students from Spring Grove, New Oxford and Delone Catholic high schools, had the opportunity to tour local manufacturing facilities at Utz Quality Foods, Snyder’s-Lance, RH Sheppard and Martin’s Potato Chips. “Out of the students who participated today, if 10 decide to pursue a career in manufacturing and return to live and work in the Hanover area, it will have been a success,” said Gary Laird, President, Hanover Area Chamber of Commerce. “Our goal is to show young people that there is career potential here in Hanover, and help them to develop relationships with businesses in the area who may go on to employ them upon graduation.” On Fri., Oct. 7, Ox Industries hosted the Chamber, and representatives from area schools, higher education, legislators and manufacturers for a roundtable to discuss the significance of

Kevin Hayward, CEO, Ox Industries, reinforced the value of workforce-education partnerships, such as Diversified Occupation courses offered at many local schools. Several Ox employees have been hired as a result of shadowing or school-to-work opportunities during their high school years. Dr. Susan Seiple, Assistant Superintendent, Hanover Public School District, and Lisa Dennis, Career Counselor, South Western School District, highlighted the opportunities for students in their respective school districts wishing to pursue a career in manufacturing and skilled trades. continued on page 7
