Our brand

Round the world the Hanna brand is renowned for its competitive edge

Round the world the Hanna brand is renowned for its competitive edge Adapting high end technology to meet demand for advanced measurement solutions in low to mid markets, Hanna is synonymous with market revolution. World firsts in pH and pocket testers have established our reputation for invention and innovation. Hanna automatic mini titrators broadened access to specialist chemical testing. The unique calibration check featured across Hanna temperature testing equipment raised industry expectations and set new standards among lower market entry products. Pre-amplified and double-junction electrodes, process pH with integrated cellular communication, pocket photometers, portable refractometers – all are the result of a continuous programme of research and development that lies at the heart of Hanna.

Full circle ethos When you buy a Hanna product, you can be confident it is the result of a fully-integrated research, development and manufacturing process. Unlike many instrumentation companies, Hanna does not subscribe to buying-in a product and simply putting the Hanna name on the meter. We research the technology, design the product and implement each and every stage of production.

Our growth and development owes its success to our full circle ethos.

4 range conductivity & resistivity

resistivity Electrical resistivity is a measure of how strongly a material opposes the flow of electric current. •

A low resistivity indicates a material that readily allows the movement of electric charge.

The unit of electrical resistivity is the Ohm (Ω)

A popular combination bench meter, the HI 216 can read conductivity in four different ranges together with resistivity between 0 and 19.90 MOhms Slimline design takes up minimal space in the lab

Main benefits Wide operating panel with large easy to use buttons and summary instructions

Four user selectable conductivity measurement ranges

Automatic probe recognition

EC and resistivity temperature compensation

Conductivity: HI 76303

Four platinum ring EC probe and resistivity probe included

The four-platinum-ring EC probe has a built-in temperature sensor that automatically compensates for temperature changes.

conductivity

The temperature coefficient can be adjusted from 0 to 2.5% through a knob on the front panel.

Electrical conductivity or specific conductance measures the ability of a material to conduct an electric current and is the reverse to resistivity. For example: •

A conductor such as a metal has HIGH conductivity but a LOW resistivity

An insulator like glass has LOW conductivity but a HIGH resistivity

Units of measurement

Supplied with The HI 216 bench meter is supplied complete with: •

HI 76303 conductivity probe

HI 3316D resistivity probe

12 Vdc adapter

Instructions

Resistivity: HI 3316D The HI 3316D resistivity probe features a built-in temperature sensor to automatically compensate for temperature variations. It benefits from a user-selectable temperature coefficient ranging from 2 to more than 7%. What’s more, the probe is easy to clean and requires little maintenance.

The unit of electrical conductivity is the Siemens per meter (S/m)

Units can also be expressed as units of μS/c or mS/com, (microSiemens and milliSiemens)

Calibration is simple

Using the probes

A unit of EC (electrical conductivity) can sometimes be found on scales of instruments where 1 EC = 1 μS/cm

For conductivity measurements, the calibration is a simple one point procedure using the easy-to-operate front panel knob.

The HI 76303 conductivity probe and the HI 3316D resistivity probe are both supplied as standard with the HI 216 bench meter.

Conductivity measurements are routinely used in industrial and environmental applications as they provide a fast, reliable and inexpensive way of measuring the ionic content in a solution. Ideal for monitoring water quality in purification systems, typical applications include public water supplies, hospitals, boiler water, font solution in printing and other industries which depend on water quality such as brewing.

The EC probe supplied with the meter also has the added advantage of not requiring re-calibration when switching from one range to another.

dissolved oxygen

D

issolved oxygen (DO) is oxygen that is dissolved or carried in a given medium such as blood or water. It is a vital ingredient in water for ecosystems to survive and its measurement is therefore key to all water quality testing. The amount of dissolved oxygen that can be held by water depends on three factors:

• water temperature • salinity • atmospheric pressure

Temperature: the amount of oxygen dissolved in a body of water increases as the temperature decreases – ie colder water holds more oxygen. Salinity: as salinity decreases, the amount of oxygen dissolved in the water increases. Freshwater therefore holds more oxygen than saltwater. Atmospheric pressure: as atmospheric pressure decreases, the amount of oxygen dissolved in water decreases too. Therefore as altitude increases (and atmospheric pressure decreases) levels of dissolved oxygen in water will be lower.

biochemical oxygen demand

B

iochemical oxygen demand (BOD) gives an indication of the biodegradable organic material present in a sample of water. It is recognised as the amount of dissolved oxygen needed by aerobic biological organisms to break down organic material present in a given water sample at a certain temperature (incubation) over a 5 day period. Although not a precise quantitative test, this method is widely used as an indication of the organic quality of water.

The BOD value is most commonly expressed in milligrams of oxygen consumed per litre of sample over a five day incubation period at 20 °C. It is often used as a robust surrogate of the degree of organic pollution of water.

Why is it measured? BOD is frequently used as a gauge of the effectiveness of wastewater treatment plants.

With DEWPOINT

fast response time

humidity Relative Humidity is commonly defined as the

Dew point is the point at which water vapour

amount of water vapour present in air.

present in the air will condense into liquid.

The amount of water vapour the air can hold is dependent on temperature and pressure but it is temperature that is the main consideration when taking measurements.

If the air is gradually cooled while maintaining the moisture content at a constant, then the relative humidity will rise until it reaches 100%, known as saturation point, or dew point. If the air is cooled further, some of the moisture will condense as in the early morning when water vapour present in the air condenses on to plant leaves and grasses as ‘dew’.

Readings are given as a percentage for a given temperature. 100% would be the total saturated state of the air at that temperature, ie when the air holds as much water vapour as is possible at any given temperature.

Why measure relative humidity? Relative humidity is one of the factors contributing to how comfortable we feel. Our bodies use evaporation as the main means of cooling to regulate body temperature. When the relative humidity is high (more water vapour in the air) then the evaporation rate from our skin is reduced and we feel hot and uncomfortable. It is therefore important to measure relative humidity in offices with artificial climate control to help maintain a comfortable working environment.

Probe is attached to a long 1m cable permitting improved access for testing in awkward conditions

The Hanna HI 9565 portable thermo-hygrometer is designed to measure relative humidity and temperature in difficult environments and poorly lit areas.

Dewpoint can be measured and displayed at the touch of a button – particularly useful in microclimate testing

A particularly fast response time offering near instant results for relative humidity plus the added advantage of being able to measure dewpoint make this instrument ideal for rapid monitoring in controlled micro-climates.

Why measure dewpoint? Dewpoint is an important parameter for the aviation industry and will be measured at airports around the world to improve safety. •

Air with high humidity levels is less dense than air with low humidity levels and this affects the lift and engine efficiency of the aircraft. High humidity levels mean that longer runways are needed. The rate of climb of the aircraft will also be affected – something the pilots need to take into account each and every time they take off.

Backlit LCD display provides good visibility in low ambient light levels – ideal for museums and libraries

Main benefits

HOLD key freezes readings on display allowing time to record data

Cold humid air can also cause ice to form on the wings and exposed parts of the aircraft making it dangerous to fly.

Robust casing with splashproof keyboard

Temperature readout available in either ˚C or ˚F

Calibrating your meter Revolutionising calibration for relative humidity, Hanna’s dedicated calibration chamber offers a quick and easy method of checking that your meter is in optimum working order.

40

The HI 7102 Hanna calibration chamber uses Lithium Chloride and Sodium Chlorine salts to create a known relative humidity within a small chamber into which the probe can be introduced. In this way a low relative humidity and a high relative humidity atmosphere can be generated and the meter checked against these saturated salt solution atmospheres.

Selecting the right pH electrode

Laboratory

Laboratory

Electrodes pH

pH • pH • pH • pH • pH

Selecting the right pH electrode for an application can make all the difference to the response time, accuracy and life of your electrode. To get the best out of your electrode, consider the following points before you make your choice:

General purpose electrodes are suitable

for aqueous solutions with a relatively high water content and either no aggressive substances, or relative low concentrations.

If you are working with solutions containing heavy metals, proteins or TRIS buffers, a calomel electrode or one with a double junction will give you the best results.

Solutions to calibrate and look after your pH meter and electrode

Electrode maintenance solutions

pH solutions with a known value are called buffer solutions. They can be used to check the performance and accuracy of your pH meter and electrode and can also be used as a reference against which to calibrate.

They are supplied ready to use - so no pre-mixing required - and feature full lot traceability for peace of mind.

Proper care and maintenance of your pH electrode will provide faster response times and better accuracy and repeatability.

Choose from solutions supplied in ready to use re-sealable 500ml bottles, or individually sealed foil sachets containing 20ml of solution.

Small grease or fat deposits on the glass measurement bulb of a pH electrode have a detrimental effect on accuracy and response time. Even clean hands can leave a deposit on the glass, so it is recommended that even when measuring neutral solutions such as water, the electrode is still maintained in peak condition using a general purpose cleaning solution.

Hanna buffer solutions are prepared according to precise formulae and standardised against NIST references to ensure quality and accuracy.

Solutions in 20ml Sachets – supplied in packs of 25

To keep your electrodes at peak performance it is good practice to clean the liquid junction of the electrode once a day or at least once a week by immersing the electrode into a cleaning solution for 15 to 20 minutes and then storing in storage solution. If you don’t have storage solution then pH buffer 4 or buffer 7 can be used as an alternative.

For those occasions when an ‘off-the-peg’ probe will not quite meet the criteria for your specific application, Hanna offers a quality bespoke service.

84

We take a detailed brief to discuss exactly what you need - the application, the product, the meter and above all, how you will be using the probe. For example: if you need to measure temperature in a blast furnace, you might need a 5m flexible probe with a 10m heat proof cable and shielded handle. If you do, no problem! We take the brief and make the probe for you – customised to meet your specific criteria.

Temperature Calibration why, what and how A

ll temperature measurement meters require regular calibration and checking to ensure they deliver the high levels of accuracy demanded by health and safety legislation in the UK and EU. Although there is no specified frequency for calibration it is general practice is to carry out an annual calibration and re-certification on the thermometers used in the workplace.

An annual check by a certified calibration laboratory will ensure the readings taken with a digital thermometer can be relied upon. What many people do not realise is that there is a difference in quality between different types of accreditation and the certificates issued.

Hanna Temperature Calibration Lab

F

or ultimate reassurance, the Hanna Temperature Calibration Lab is fully UKAS accredited and runs a comprehensive facility to test, check and calibrate all makes of digital thermometers and sensors to international standards.

Contact us for details on our service and calibration packages. T: 01525 850 855 E: sales@hannainst.co.uk

Did you know ? If your thermometer and sensor have a UKAS certificate, they can be used as a Reference Thermometer to check the accuracy of other thermometers. This is ideal for a company or organisation where multiple thermometers need to be checked.
