About the Project
Background
Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) is an institution that has subscribed its agenda and curriculums to the concepts of Design and Design Thinking. Inherently, 3.007 Design Thinking and Innovation in term two of SUTD’s undergraduate curriculum is one of the signature courses as it introduces design thinking and innovation strategies. The target of design is to look into the future and create opportunities for intervention, which is intrinsically linked to uncertainties. Design thinking cannot be taught by adopting rules and by following predefined sequences. It requires a continuous openness to learning by students and teachers alike, an engagement in constant communication, critical reflection and in developing the ability to articulate our acts and intentions.
We provide a framework to guide students and help them shape their attributes as designers, by providing them safe spaces but not constraining their individual development.
About the Project
Theme: Glow 1.0
The theme for this run of 3.007 Design Thinking and Innovation will focus on creative light installations in Changi Business Park.
We will analyse the potential of light installations and explore how they could inspire social interactions.
Use of light installations to bring people together is a relatively new and creative approach that fosters design and technology. Light installations offer immense opportunities to deliver unique forms of art and entertainment in public spaces creating emotional and inspiring bonds between people that cohabit in those spaces.
Many light festivals around the world have demonstrated the power of light installations in going brightening up night skies in cityscapes and making them highly vibrant. In this course, we will take a design thinking approach, attempting to actively involve all stakeholders in the design process to help ensure the designed light installation meets its needs and is usable.
