Scavenger Hunt winners announced The Downtown Russell Business Association sponsored the 3rd Russell Scavenger Hunt on Saturday, September 27th, 2014. It was a fun afternoon for all the scavengers who showed up to hunt for their clues and have a chance at winning hundreds of dollars in cash and prizes. The weather was beautiful and there were hunters of all varieties, including families, friends, as well as lone scavengers. Special to The Greenup Beacon Lora Pullin, who becomes the Greenup Beacon’s newest columnist, was born and raised in West Virginia, spending most of her childhood in the rural community of Wayne, WV. She is a graduate of Marshall University in Huntington, West Virginia, where she received a Bachelor of Arts in Family and Consumer Sciences with an emphasis in food and nutrition. After completing her degree Lora accepted a full time position at Kings’ Daughters Medical center working as a foodservice supervisor. Soon after beginning work at Kings Daughters Medical Center Lora and her husband, Jeremy Pullin, moved to Kentucky and made Flatwoods

In her role as Extension Agent for Family and Consumer Sciences, Lora has delivered educational programs in family and child development; food, nutrition, and health; leadership development; and, financial education. She has worked recently with the Nutrition Education Program supervising paraprofessionals and delivering education to limited resource audiences. She also serves as an advisor to Extension volunteers and leaders including the Greenup County Homemakers. She serves as secretary of the Northeast Area for the Kentucky Extension Association of Family and Consumer Sciences and is a member of the National Extension Association of Family and Con-
sumer Sciences. The goal of the Greenup County Family and Consumer Sciences Program is to improve the quality of life for individuals and families. They address the challenges of critical issues affecting people’s daily lives in a changing environment. Programs focus on economics, social and physical well-being of our clients. As a result she hopes to strengthen personal and family relationships, encourage healthful choices, and identify resources to extend income. When writing the column “At Home with Lora” she hopes to help others with challenges they may be facing at home but don’t have a resource to ask. The column will focus on topics including new recipes to encourage healthy lifestyle choices,
stretching your family’s dollars during the holiday season, and ways to improve home energy management. Upcoming educational sessions or workshops at the Extension Office will also be highlighted to give readers an opportunity to attend.

Jeanie Hammond, pictured, took control of Jeanie’s Flowers and More on July 1. The business is located at 1205 Bellefonte Road in Flatwoods. Jeanie’s Flowers and More has a 24 hour a day answering service by calling 606-836-0015. This number is answered after hours for funeral work and other needs. While Jeanie is the new owner and works daily in the business other employees in the shop include Sherry Russell, Kelly Tomlin and Danielle Bailey.

Russell students attend MSU program Special to The Greenup Beacon Students from Russell High School visited the Morehead State University campus, as part of the Early College Program, Wednesday, Oct. 1. More than 50 high and technical schools offered MSU classes during the fall semester with more than 2,000 high school students participating in the program. “This program is truly a win-win opportunity. their new home. Jeremy and Lora are the proud parents of two children Camron and Kaitlyn Pullin. When she is not working or running from the baseball field to the dance studio . . . Lora enjoys cooking, reading, and working with the youth group at her church. She most recently worked for the Ashland Independent School District as the district food service director. While working for the school district she took an active role in partnering with the farm to school program. Through this endeavor a partnership was formed with the local extension office, starting her path to a career working in Cooperative Extension. Lora began her Cooperative Extension career on October 14, 2013 in Greenup County as the County Exten-
