Here’s the buzz: Stevens wins Greenup County High School junior Emma Stevens, Greenup County FFA Vice-President, has been awarded a national award from Bayer CropScience. She won second place in the country and $2,000 for the Bayer Blue Ribbon Beekeeper Award. This award is for next generation (ages 12-18) leaders in beekeeping and pollinator health advocacy. Her award will go toward accomplishing three different goals: funding Junior Bee Camps next summer, developing STEM-related (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) activities for elementary schools that center around bees and other pollinators, and initiating a

high school bee club. Emma has been involved in helping the FFA chapter keep up with their beehives for the last two years of her high school career. She has also been keeping her own bees the last two years as well. After attending the Annual Bee School conducted by the Greenup County Beekeepers Association in January of 2019, her family decided to purchase a package of bees. They also won another package of bees in a giveaway at the bee school. They have since turned those two hives into eleven. Besides collecting honey, Emma has learned how to make beeswax-based lip balm. Emma has already been

involved in pollinator advocacy. She has helped with coordinating efforts for the Junior Bee Clubs which are in all four of Greenup County School District’s elementary schools. She has prepared material and resources as well as help manage some of the elementary school’s hives. She has helped install numerous pollinator habitats around multiple district campuses. She has many exciting plans to implement with the STEM activities and the Summer Junior Bee School. She has a heart for education and helping others, and this award will allow her to further advocate for pollinators and serve young people.
