elcome to our October edition. You know autumn is almost upon you when, after a break of two months, our October edition drops through your door towards the end of September. This edition is packed full, as usual, with local businesses, community information and events. The Handy Mag has been published for over 14 years by our small, family-run, independent publishing company based in the centre of Malton. We live in the area, we work in the area and we support our local businesses directly by buying local wherever possible. I have always believed that the Handy Mag is good for business and we are passionate about supporting our local independent businesses both in print magazines and online. Fall into a good book this autumn

THE DUTCH HOUSE

Ann Patchett This is a book about the bond between siblings, the repercussions of past events that echo down the years and the attachment people can feel for a place. In this case, the place is a big, grand house, and the siblings are Danny and his big sister, Maeve. Their mother flees when Danny is just a toddler, leaving Maeve to step into her shoes. When the children gain a stepmother, they soon learn they’re not welcome in their own home and the future they had planned comes tumbling down. A beautifully written, gentle book, The Dutch House is one to savour.

HELLO, WE’RE MAPIO We offer you Mortgages And Protection In One!

O

ur aim is to make mortgages easy, by checking thousands of mortgages daily to find you the best deal. We also want to help you to protect what matters, by providing insurance for you, your family and your home. If you haven’t already got a mortgage and protection broker, then you need one! That’s where we come in, we really care about your financial future, and we’ll guide you to make the right choices. Mortgages Made Easy Getting a mortgage can feel like hard work. We can guide you through the process and try to make it simple. The trouble is, there are thousands of mortgages to choose from and they can change every day. How do we do that? Well, we take a good look at your income and your outgoings (all in complete confidence of course), and help you to understand exactly what you can afford, in a great financial review. Many of our customers have these reviews with us on a regular basis because it’s useful to have a professional giving you best advice on your finances. Then, we look at thousands of mortgage deals, from high street lenders you know and many others besides. We have access to a comprehensive panel of lenders – which means we’re not tied to any one particular lender and therefore, we sometimes have access to exclusive deals that your high street bank might not offer over the counter. Our aim is to find you the best deal that works for your particular situation. We always work really closely with our customers, making sure everyone’s happy before moving forwards, and taking the time to explain what’s-what with the mortgage jargon you’ll find in paperwork, too. Plus, we like to help you plan ahead. Whether you’re a first-time buyer, an old hand at moving house, or remortgaging and you want to find the best mortgage, the MAPIO team’s here to take care of you.

Protect What Matters - Protecting your family is important None of us like looking for insurance policies. But we all know, it’s impossible to predict the future. Take your pets, for example. You just can’t tell when man’s best friend is going to cost a fortune – because there’s an unexpected vet’s bill to pay. That’s why most of us don’t think twice about taking out a pet insurance policy these days. And we should place the same importance on insuring ourselves too. After all, if you earn a living, you are probably your most valuable financial asset! It is important to prioritise and protect you and your family by having a ‘people policy’ that will help you handle the ‘what ifs’ in life. We help you find the right policy that is within your affordability, which will pay the right amount, at the right time – and there are lots of options to choose from. In fact, why not come in for a free meeting and talk to us about your current life insurance policies? Particularly if you’re thinking about getting a better deal on your mortgage (and did you know, you don’t have to wait until your mortgage term renews to look for a better mortgage deal?!). Recommend a friend and help York Against Cancer We are proud to support York Against Cancer, we hope you agree. It’s also a good thing to share positive experiences in life. Therefore, when you recommend MAPIO Financial to a friend and they take out a mortgage or an insurance policy with us, we’ll give £50 to York Against Cancer – and £50 John Lewis vouchers to you, too. Please pop into our office in the centre of York at 31-32 Colliergate, or call us on 01904 235000, or email us at hello@mapiofinancial.co.uk. We would love to hear from you, and help you continue on life’s journey.

John Moore and Julie Taylor MAPIO Financial Limited is an Appointed Representative of Primis Mortgage Network, a trading name of First Complete Limited which is authorised and regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority. This firm usually charges a fee for mortgage advice. The amount of the fee will depend upon your circumstances and will be discussed and agreed with you at the earliest opportunity. YOUR HOME MAY BE REPOSSESSED IF YOU DON’T KEEP UP THE REPAYMENTS ON YOUR MORTGAGE.

FLOORING MERGER Local merger offers a new bespoke and competitive service for all of your flooring needs. Family-run flooring showroom, Acomb Flooring, and York Oak Flooring have merged with the aim of giving their customers a much more personal and comprehensive service, right from choosing flooring through to fitting. The two local companies will continue with the same great team. Mark Newton has over 25 years of expert advice and fittings experience in carpets, vinyl, laminates, luxury vinyl floors and engineered woods and, with partner Kelly working behind the scenes gathering new products at competitive prices, they ensure that the floor buying process is as simple as possible for their customers. Mark says, “We have always focussed on ensuring our customers receive great service but with an extended range of wood and engineered floors and now carpets and vinyl floors, we can now offer a completely bespoke solution at competitive prices. And instead of visiting a busy shop, we can give each project our full attention with one-to-one appointments. “We visit your home or workplace with samples which means that you can find the perfect flooring on site, matching colours, soft furnishings and fittings perfectly.” Mark not only comes to show you samples and measure up, he is also the fitter. “We offer a one-stop-shop, so the person you meet on day one will also be the person that comes and fits your new floor.” The new mobile service will still offer the same large range of products with a huge range of engineered wood flooring, laminates, luxury vinyl tiles and carpets. Kelly says, “We offer you a free measuring service and also offer a free quotation depending on

your needs. If you are unable to reach a decision, you will be able to borrow samples to ensure you are happy with the product. With our range, advice and service, you’re sure to find the right product for you.” For the perfect flooring solution, give Mark and Kelly a call at York Oak Flooring on 07940 883457 or visit their website at www. yorkoakflooring.co.uk.

aking changes or ‘doing up’ a property is a big and expensive decision. It may be simple decorating or undertaking more complex renovations or extensions but it is important to research if any changes you are planning fall within permitted development or require a full planning application to be submitted. Most local planning departments offer an advisory service to help decide if planning is required, or whether building control must be involved. Other issues which may affect what you can do include listed building status, party walls, shared access or other covenants on your property. Once you know works can proceed it is important to entrust the project to capable and competent contractors and designers. All building works, including decorating, repairs, renovations, refurbishments and construction are regulated by the Construction Design & Management Regulations 2015 (CDM). These regulations apply to both domestic and commercial properties. Where you are carrying out the works on your own home for non-commercial reasons then the responsibility for implementing these regulations falls entirely on the Contractor you appoint. If the works are being carried out for a business purpose i.e. at a place of work, for a rental or holiday let or the property is being sold on for commercial gain (property development) then the client has legal responsibilities under the regulations and can be prosecuted for failing to meet them. It is important that any person appointing a contractor understands whether they are a commercial or domestic client under CDM regulations and must ensure that the contractor is capable and competent to carry out the works and has a full understanding on what is required of them. If you are planning any works speak to your architect, building surveyor or builder and ask them about how CDM will apply to the job. If you have any doubt then take some professional advice then C2 Safety can provide straightforward clarification of CDM regulations and is able to help all parties to be compliant at every level. We can act as Principal Designer, provide bespoke Construction Phase Health & Safety Plans for Principal Contractors and provide RAMS and site inspections for all types of contractors on all manner of projects. Y

ork Literature Festival and St Peter’s School are pleased to announce that McMafia author, Misha Glenny, is coming to York on Monday 7 October to talk about one of today’s hottest topics Geopolitics. If you’ve ever wondered why odd things happen in the world, Misha Glenny will have already looked behind the teeth and smiles of the photo opportunity to explain what really lies beneath the grin. If you’re interested in learning about the Americas, Western and Eastern Europe, Southern Africa, Turkey, the Middle East or Chinese foreign policy, Misha will offer you an eye-opening talk that will be both surprising and illuminating. “The investigative author recently became known to a wider audience thanks to the BBC Sunday night drama, McMafia, which dealt with the murky and

complex underworld of corrupt geo-finance, money laundering and how apparently legal means are used for illegal purposes,’ said Festival Director Nick David, ‘so we’re very excited that Misha is coming to York to talk about another hot topic - Geopolitics.’ You can see Misha Glenny at Temple Hall, York St John University, Lord Mayor’s Walk, 7.30 - 9.30pm on Monday 7 October. All events are bookable via the York Literature Festival website, www.yorkliteraturefestival.co.uk. Tickets for Misha Glenny are also available from the York Theatre Royal Box Office, 01904 623568. This is just one of a range of events taking place in September and October, brought together by York Explore, York Literature Festival and St Peter’s School. Actor David Suchet, better known as Poirot, will be at the Folk Hall, New Earswick on Thursday 10 October at 1pm to talk about his life in photography, whilst TV historian Dan Jones will be at Tempest Anderson Hall, Museum Gardens on 16 October at 7pm to review his book about the Crusades.

An Evening with

Michael Portillo in York A rare visit to North Yorkshire by the former politician and rail enthusiast. Thursday 12th December 2019 at Central Hall University of York Start Time: 7.30pm Tickets £19.50 from York Theatre Royal Box Office Tel: 01904 623568 or book online at www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

M

ichael Portillo makes a rare appearance in York to talk about his life and career. After studying at Cambridge University, he worked with Mrs Thatcher, briefing her before press conferences. As Conservative Politician, he took just over a decade to go from a seat in the Commons to being seen as possible future Prime Minister. His political career came to a humiliating end when he lost his seat in May 1997. Since then, he has reinvented himself as a broadcaster of some renown, travelling the railways of the world for television, and investigating the history of numerous countries, and the daily lives of their people. He has also been a regular contributor to The Moral Maze, as well as writing for newspapers.

This special event will see Michael talk about his remarkable life, told with considerable flair and humour. Audience questions are an important part of the event, so come prepared. A lively and fascinating evening. Michael will be available before the event starts to meet people and sign books. Please note: car parking facilities are very limited at University of York – please use taxis, public transport or shared lifts, where possible. The History of Witches in England and the post of Witchfinder General was created to rid towns of ‘troublesome and dangerous’ witches. From 1500 to 1660, up to 100,000 people in Europe were accused of witchcraft and more than half of these were killed, with the highest number of executions, perhaps unsurprisingly due to the book, taking place in Germany. The hysteria subsequently spread to America with the famous Salem Witch Trials in 1692, but over the following hundred years or so the prevalence of witch-hunts died down, with new laws introduced to protect innocent people from being falsely accused at a time when someone could be put to death for having a hairy mole (the Devil’s mark) or owning a black cat (believed to be a supernatural entity).

T

he earliest witches were often respected wise women who lived by the cycles of nature and had expert knowledge of plants for healing. However, witches also came to be labelled devil worshippers and heretics and were persecuted for hundreds of years. It was the Bible that helped seal their fate with the Book of Exodus in the Old Testament stating: “thou shalt not suffer a witch to live” (22:18). Witch hunts began in the mid-fifteenth century with witches popularly being burnt at the stake, hanged or drowned. Prior to this, confessions were extracted by various forms of torture including the witch’s bridle. A book called The Malleus Maleficarium (The Hammer of Sorcery), written by Catholic Dominican monks Jacob Springer and Henrik Kramer, was published in Germany in 1486 to enable communities to identify and deal with witches. The book sold so many copies between 1486 and 1500, it was second only in Europe to the Bible. In 1542, practising witchcraft was declared a crime 36 | Handy Mag | October 2019

Witchcraft has long been associated with evil but in fact, modern witchcraft rejects the Devil on the basis that he is a Christian concept. Witches often practice the ancient pagan religion of Wicca (or Wicce) whose root beliefs lie in revering the natural world with a creed of ‘harm none’. In Wicca, witches are considered healers, protectors and teachers. Spells, incantations and charms are taken from The Book of Shadows, which despite its sinister name is an encyclopaedia of ancient wisdom for practising witchcraft and magick. However, there have been other somewhat darker religions pertaining to magic and the occult over the last 100 years. Once described as “the wickedest man in the world”, the notorious Aleister Crowley founded the cult of Thelema at the turn of the twentieth century, which advocated “do what thou wilt” in the practice of magic. Whether for good or evil, magic spells and witches continue to intrigue and fascinate us, particularly at this time of year with the coming of Samhain, or Halloween. By Catherine Rose

HAVE YOUR IHT CAKE - AND EAT IT!

I

By Julie Wilson, Chartered Financial Planner at PenLife Associates

nheritance Tax has been around for centuries. So why do people know so little about it? Let’s say your estate is liable for Inheritance Tax. If no action is taken, your allowance is £325,000, all of which can be passed down tax-free. But the excess? Completely different ball park. 40% of everything above the threshold will go down the drain (well, straight to the tax man…). But you can do something about it – and the government don’t only approve it, they encourage it! “Over and over again the Courts have said that there is nothing sinister in so arranging affairs as to keep taxes as low as possible. Everyone does it, rich and poor alike and all do right, for nobody owes any public duty to pay more than the law demands.” - Learned Hand If this wasn’t bad enough, there’s also almost a 25% chance your estate will also be investigated by HMRC. A recent Freedom of Information (FOI) request found

that over 5,000 Inheritance Tax investigations are opened every year. The request found that the growth of these investigations (7.8%) sprouted from the introduction of the Residence Nil Rate Band back in April 2017. Here’s the breakdown of the IHT investigations over the years: • 2016/17- 5,138 • 2017/18- 5,354 • 2018/19- 5,537 Politicians have wanted to prove they are cracking down on those who may be trying to avoid tax, with HMRC’s resources now seemingly being lent to help investigate IHT cases. The ever-growing complications surrounding Inheritance Tax means that the need to seek financial advice is now higher than ever. And it’s forever becoming more crucial. The good news is that there are several, legal solutions which can help normal people face a less drastic impact or help avoid the

tax completely in some cases. At the very least seeking professional advice softens the blow for the family members who are left with probate to handle. Essentially it means actively moving things out of your estate, without diminishing the control you have over your own money. We call them ‘have your cake and eat it’ solutions for this reason. Getting a professional opinion can help mitigate chances of an investigation, help you avoid common pitfalls and reduce some of the risks involved in DIY Financial Planning. Come along to our FREE seminar at Novotel York, where one of our Inheritance Tax specialists will talk about the must-knows, things you need to consider but predominantly - the importance of acting sooner rather than later. If you’re still not convinced – we will also be giving you a free cake to take home with you … How appropriate!

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

WHY IS IT IMPORTANT FOR OLDER PATIENTS TO STILL GO TO THE DENTIST?

A

s patients get older some think that its not important to continue to see the dentist, and that their teeth having lasted till now should be ok, but we’ll explain why this is a risky strategy. The NHS by Christine Parker know that treatment needs often BDS (GDC 72136) increase as patients age and this is why dental care is not automatically free after retirement age. As we age our mouths may become drier, this can be due to medication, changes in our salivary gland function or have a systemic cause. A dry mouth massively increases your likelihood of dental problems, saliva act as a lubricant, aids chewing and helps to neutralise the pH of the mouth after you have eaten. It contains antibacterial elements which also help the gum condition. Older patients who keep their teeth may also have been heavily filled over the years and their bone support for their teeth may be reduced. A build up of tartar can cause gum disease which has been proven to link to heart disease and diabetes and some studies have demonstrated the same bacteria in the mouth as in the brains of dementia patients. A worrying thought. Regular visits to the dentist and thorough cleaning both at home and professionally can all reduce tartar build up. The additional benefit is that your mouth will feel healthier and look better. We understand that access can be a problem and practices with close parking and ground floor surgery such as ours can enable you to continue to be seen. Please call Jan at Howardian Dental for details on how to register.

THE GONDOLIERS Musical Director – Alasdair Jamieson Stage Director – Pauline Marshall

York Opera has a rich history dating back to 1967 and each year produce a number of operas, operettas and concerts, with singers from all over Yorkshire and far beyond. The Gondoliers was first performed in 1889 and was an instant success – so much so that it received the honour of a private performance in 1891 in Windsor Castle in the presence of Queen Victoria. Set in Venice and the ‘Kingdom of Barataria’, it is full of visual and musical colour, wonderful melodies and lively dances. Gilbert’s libretto is as witty as ever on the subjects of republicanism and equality, and Sullivan’s music sparkles with warmth and good humour. Outstanding numbers abound: Take a Pair of Sparkling Eyes, A Regular Royal Queen, When a Merry Maiden Marries, the delightful Gavotte and the famous Cachucha – to name but a few. Short Story A Marrow Just Knows “Make room on the table for my marrow, Linda,” Edna barked, hugging the vegetable to her chest, while pretending not to notice Linda slipping something she shouldn’t into her coat pocket. “It’s my donation to the tombola.”

“Really?” Linda frowned. “Why’s that?”

“Edna, what a surprise!” Linda shrilled, smoothing her clothing. “I thought you were helping to get the cream teas ready?”

“Look at it.” Edna nodded warily at the marrow. “I’ve had that thing staring back at me from the vegetable plot for weeks.”

“All done,” said Edna, heaving the marrow onto the table, “so I thought I’d come and give you a hand.”

“How odd. It looks as though the stripes have formed a human face on it. It’s quite sinister isn’t it?” Linda whispered. “It’s as though it’s scowling.”

“I’m nearly done here too.” Linda needlessly fussed over her display. “We’ve got a good spread.” Edna stood back and admired Linda’s arrangement of donated tombola prizes. “Would you look at that!”

“Its eyes follow you everywhere,” Edna growled. “It knows all your secrets.” Edna warmed to her theme. “Last week I forgot to leave some money out for the milkman, and that marrow wouldn’t give me any peace until I put it right.”

“You mean the hamper?” Linda remarked casually. “A very generous donation.”

“But that’s crazy.” Linda stepped back. “How can it know?”

The tombola table was heaving with jars of chutneys and jams, some very nice-looking home-made cakes and some not so nice-looking home-made cakes. But it was the hamper that everyone would be want to win.

“It just knows,” Edna shrugged, and let her words hang in the air for a moment. Finally, she added cheerfully, “Are you going to stick a raffle ticket on it?”

“Must be a few bob’s worth of stuff in there – chocolates, prosecco and some very fancy smellies,” Edna winked at Linda. “Looks like number five is the ticket everyone will be trying to get their mitts on.” “Is it?” Linda unconsciously touched her pocket. “Oh yes, of course it is.” “Very good of you to help,” Edna continued. “It’s always nice to get new volunteers.” “Very kind of you to donate your marrow.” Linda patted the huge vegetable. “I’m sure anyone would be delighted to win that.” “Doubtful,” Edna snorted. “I’m glad to see the back of it.” 42 | Handy Mag | October 2019

“Yes of course.” Linda jumped and battled with the tape dispenser while keeping her eye on the marrow. “Shall we put the tickets in the tombola barrel?” Edna said. “That’s the last job isn’t it?” Edna watched as Linda anxiously folded the raffle tickets, a mist of sweat beading her top lip. The women worked in silence while the marrow looked on, angrily. Edna knew it wouldn’t be long until Linda cracked. A marrow always works a charm on a guilty conscience. Even a marrow with a face drawn on with felt-tipped pen. Ticket number five would soon find its way out of Linda’s pocket and back into the tombola barrel, with no questions asked. ACROSTIC FOR SALLY By The Pastoral Poet

Softly, you came to me, And caressed me with your smile. Lightsome as the mayfly’s dance. Lifting my sunken spirits, Your closeness, a healing balm, Soothing me with your presence. Alluring, and giving. Lyrically I pen my thoughts. Lines for your keeping, Yet time may let them slip away. By Clive Milson

Apple celebrations have been growing in popularity since Apple Day began over 25 years ago as a way of celebrating variety and richness in a locality. RV Roger Ltd continues to encourage this by growing more than 200 varieties of apples, including local and regional varieties not normally found on the supermarket shelf.

An apple a day, keeps the doctor away’ – You’ve heard it all before of course – but is it true? Well, we all know that apples help to reduce tooth decay, but according to Dr. Adam Briggs from the British Heart Foundation: apples also contain lots of Vitamin C which aids our immune system, as well as phenols which help to reduce blood cholesterol. So, if you fancy a bit more of something that does you good - then pop down to the RV Roger Apple Weekend in Pickering, where Apple Weekend will be celebrated at the plant centre on Saturday 5th & Sunday 6th October from 9am to 5pm. There will be displays of more than 200 varieties of fruit, including many rare and heritage varieties of apples, pears, plums, medlar, quince, and nuts. You’ll also be able to taste a range of fruit before you order your fruit tree, as well as buy freshly-picked

Highlights of the Apple Weekend include: • A display of more than 200 fruit, apples, pears, medlar, quince, and more • Advice from experts on choosing, growing and pruning fruit trees • Talks and demonstrations throughout the weekend. • Gift books, DeWit tools, garden vouchers for sale • Professional apple identification (There will be a small charge for this)

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. Instyle’s directors Gary and Paul say that more than 80 per cent of customers come through referrals from their customers’ family, friends and neighbours. James and Heather, from Wiggington, wrote: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 29 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one

kitchen a month, to a close-knit team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in the area. The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from a new creative design to the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently

beats its competitors on price. And if money is tight, an Instyle kitchen or bedroom facelift can freshen up a tired looking room for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen often for half the price of new. “We don’t use any pressure sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

Spiced Pumpkin Cheescake Ready in 2 hours, plus cooling and chilling | Serves 8

TIP For a quick raspberry sauce, push 200g fresh raspberries through a fine-holed sieve (discarding the pulp left in the sieve). Stir in 25g icing sugar and a squeeze of lemon juice.

Rich, creamy and spiced with cinnamon, this autumnal cheesecake is best baked the day before serving. INGREDIENTS 200g digestive biscuits, finely crushed 85g unsalted butter, melted 500g full-fat soft cheese, at room temperature 100g caster sugar 75g light soft brown sugar 3 large eggs, beaten 425g can pumpkin puree 2 tsp vanilla extract 1½ tsp ground cinnamon Raspberry sauce, to serve (see TIP)

54 | Handy Mag | October 2019

1. Grease a 20cm round spring-form tin and line the base with baking paper. Mix together the crushed biscuits and melted butter and press into the base of the tin. Chill in the fridge whilst making the filling. Preheat the oven to 160C/140C fan/gas mark 2. 2. Beat the soft cheese, caster sugar and 55g of the light soft brown sugar together in a large bowl until creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs. Place the pumpkin puree in a separate bowl and beat with the vanilla extract and ground cinnamon until smooth. Fold into the cheesecake mixture until thoroughly combined. Spoon the mixture over the biscuit base and gently level the surface. Sprinkle over the rest of the brown sugar. 3. Bake the cheesecake on a baking sheet in the preheated oven for 1¼ -1½ hours until the filling is just set. Turn off the oven and leave the cheesecake inside until cold, then chill in the fridge for 2 hours or overnight. Serve sliced drizzled with raspberry sauce.

LIGHT UP – LOCK UP By PCSO Andy Smith 5520 a thief. An expensive phone or laptop charging next to a window is a temptation and again simply by removing this item from view you massively reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. Your local Police teams are actively marking property across York, events are advertised on Twitter and this is a great opportunity to have your valuables permanently marked using the Dot Peen equipment. This is again a great deterrent and should you ever be the victim of a theft makes the chances of your property being returned to you much greater. You can also follow the online form on the North Yorkshire Police website to request an Officer attend to mark your property or alternatively contact your local Safer Neighbourhood Team who will be happy to arrange this for you.

A

s Summer comes to an end and the nights draw in it is important to consider your home security. Many steps that you can take are obvious but put simply if you remember to “Light Up – Lock Up” , then you will reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. A home in darkness is potentially a target for an opportunistic thief. If you are going out during the evening leave a light on in the property to give the impression that somebody is home as a deterrent. To leave a light on inside your home for a few hours whilst you are out will cost you only a few pence and is far preferable to returning home to find that you have been the victim of a crime. Timer switches are inexpensive and easy to use and are readily available in DIY Stores and online. Locking Up is something that everybody should do although a large number of burglaries are committed through an unlocked door. An opportunistic thief will try your door and if it is unlocked could enter your property and steal items that we often leave in the hallway or very close to the front door. This only takes a couple of seconds and is easily prevented. We all need to try and make sure that we do not leave items on display that will be a temptation for

The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Things that go bump in the night

G

How to protect your tech from disaster

hosts aren’t the only thing we need to worry about over Halloween: there’s also the ever-present risk of dropping or damaging your device. Whether it’s lumps, bumps or ending up underwater, all kinds of horrors can affect our phones, tablets and laptops. One way to prevent problems is to look for hardy hardware in the first place. For example, many smartphones (e.g. a recent Samsung Galaxy or iPhone) now boast what’s called IP68 certification, which means they’re water and dust resistant. If you have an older phone, you can buy protective cases that promise IP68 protection for around £15. It’s important to understand what IP68 and its sister rating, IP67, actually mean – and remember, water resistance is not the same as waterproofing. IP67 and IP68 tell you that a phone can be immersed in a specific depth of water for a specific amount of time: one metre deep and half an hour for IP67, rising to one and a half metres for IP68. This means that when new, your phone can be dropped in pure water and survive for a short time. Pure is important, because chlorine in swimming pools or salt in the sea is very corrosive. Repeated exposure to either will eventually wear away the seals and damage your phone’s water resistance. One of the biggest dangers for devices is being dropped or scratched. Solve the former with a protective case, and the latter with a screen protector. Plastic screen protectors are harder to fit properly

58 | Handy Mag | October 2019

because of air bubbles, but glass ones can crack and can be hard to remove when they’ve been scuffed. Protective cases come in a variety of flavours, styles and prices. The trick is to think about what kind of protection you want, so for example if you’ve got kids it’s worth looking for a relatively thick case with very large lips, so when – and it’s a case of when, not if – the device gets dropped, the case keeps the screen well away from the floor. Some kids’ cases include carrying handles that make them less likely to be dropped in the first place. For grown-ups, it’s about striking a balance between substance and style: you want protection, but not so much protection you can’t fit it in your bag or pocket. Slim cases can still do a very good job of protecting your phone’s back and sides, but they do leave the screen relatively exposed: it’s a good idea to look for one that still has a bit of a lip around the screen and to put a good screen protector on too. No matter what protection you use, it’s designed for relatively minor things – so for example most protective cases are designed to protect from drops of a few feet, not from the top of a ladder. If the worst happens and your phone is seriously and expensively damaged, check your home insurance: it may well cover the damage to your phone. If you have a bank account that offers various rewards for a monthly fee, you may have phone insurance in there too. WHY IS MY MUM SO OBSESSED WITH MY POO?

Every time I have a poo, my mum seems to be so interested in picking it up and putting it into a little black bag. It’s just weird, as soon as I’ve had a poo, I want to rush off and get on with the rest of my walk, not wait around for her to inspect and collect! She then insists on carrying it around with her like a souvenir until she finds a collection box to put it in and yet again, I have to wait around for her. I’ve seen those little black bags dotted around on paths or hanging from branches and wondered what they were, maybe other mums are also obsessed with picking up their dog’s poo but for some reason they don’t know about the special collection boxes, but what’s the point in putting the poo in a bag if you aren’t going to take it to the collection box? It is a bit annoying when you find someone else’s poo stuck to your foot though, the smell is so strong that it makes me think there’s another dog following me around, it also means that I have to have my feet washed, something I really hate! If everyone picks up the dog poo, I hope that doesn’t mean they’re going to start picking up the rabbit and horse poo as well, it makes a very tasty snack for me! Jasper x

Health Check Your Cat

A

lthough your cat needs a check-up with the vet once a year, you can also carry out your own health check at home. Here are some of the main areas to keep an eye on so your feline friend stays as healthy as possible through the year. SKIN AND COAT Check for any lesions or scaling as this could indicate a skin condition or infestation of fleas/mites. Their coat should be shiny and glossy with no bald patches or dandruff – cats typically shed in autumn as well as springtime, so it’s a good idea to groom them regularly. EARS Although you shouldn’t examine too far inside your cat’s ears, you can look for any dirt, redness, or other signs that they might be infected. If your cat shakes its head or holds it to one side, they could have an ear

problem and your vet will be able to examine them more closely. EYES Eye health issues are generally easier to spot, as redness or soreness becomes fairly obvious. Your cat may rub their eyes to relieve itchiness, or squint to avoid the light and ease soreness. MOUTH Good dental hygiene is important for cat health and you may already brush your cat’s teeth regularly. If you notice they have bad breath or red/swollen gums, or are salivating more than normal, it’s advisable to take them to the vet as they could have tooth decay, gum disease or a digestive problem. These are the best seven-seaters on sale today By James Baggott

eed plenty of space, both for luggage and occupants too? You’ll want a sevenseater then. Fortunately there are plenty of options, offering a choice of body styles from a variety of brands. But which are best?

interior room. It’s also surprisingly good to drive, and frugal, too.

LAND ROVER DISCOVERY This list was always destined to feature Land Rover’s go-anywhere Discovery. As well as seven comfortable seats, its off-road technology makes it just as capable at scaling steep inclines as it is making the weekly shopping run.

SKODA KODIAQ Skoda hit the nail on the seven-seater head when it released the Kodiaq. Rock-solid build quality and incredible value for money meant that this Czech SUV enjoyed immediate popularity and has continued to do so.

It’s expensive, but the Discovery comes loaded with equipment and is available with a range of engine choices.

It’s available with a range of efficient engines too, including a new performance-orientated model, the Kodiaq vRS.

VOLVO XC90 The first-generation XC90 stormed the market thanks to its rock-solid build quality and efficiency. The latest edition continues the legacy, albeit with a lot more technology and equipment.

AUDI Q7 The big Q7 flies the flag for premium manufacturers here, offering that top-notch driving experience you’d expect from an Audi. A high-quality interior and silky-smooth petrol and diesel engines seal the deal. There’s the all-conquering SQ7 available too – which puts many ‘normal’ performance cars to shame.

It’s also one of the safest cars on the market thanks to a raft of assistance systems. For families, there are few better options than the XC90. SEAT ALHAMBRA For the best possible passenger space, look no further than the Seat Alhambra. It may be a little outdated inside, but makes up for it with a huge amount of 66 | Handy Mag | October 2019

As the Alhambra is not a new model, you’re likely to find good deals at the forecourt.

TESLA MODEL X Representing the electric contingent is Tesla’s Model X. Spaceship-like in design, it’s a real looker out on the road. A realistic 300-mile all-electric range means it’s usable for long-distance drivers, too.

ALL MAKES & MODELS SERVICED & REPAIRED

Though it may be expensive to buy outright, the Model X justifies its high price tag with minimal running costs and plenty of performance. MERCEDES GLS The Mercedes GLS takes the fight to the Audi Q7, and having recently been updated, packs more technology and features than ever before. A longer wheelbase than the car it replaces means there’s more space than before, and improved legroom for all occupants. The interior of the car has been vastly overhauled, with a full widescreen infotainment system helping to give the cabin a particularly high-tech feel. FORD S-MAX Though Ford’s S-Max has been around a little while now, it’s still one of the best-driving seven-seaters around, and offers genuine practicality as well. A range of frugal engines help to keep trips to the pump to a minimum, and build quality is solid. A range-topping Vignale is now available, though even lower trims get a vast amount of standard equipment.

NEW SEASON IN THE STUDIO AT YORK THEATRE ROYAL A new production of Athol Fugard’s Hello and Goodbye and two shows aimed at younger audiences - tutti frutti’s The Boy Who Cried Wolf and a stage adaptation of Benji Davies The Storm Whale – feature among the autumn/winter season in York Theatre Royal Studio. Associate Artist John R. Willkinson, who co-directed the summer show Swallows & Amazons, will direct Hello and Goodbye (14-30 Nov), Athol Fugard’s South African-set tense meditation on family, selfishness and redemption.

Box of Tricks presents Under Three Moons (22 Oct), a new play by Daniel Kanaber about friendship and growing up, exploring how men relate to each other today. The Accident Did Not Take Place (23 Oct) comes from Total Theatre award-winning experimental theatre company YESYESNONO who return with a hyper-reality show, featuring a new guest performer every night.

The latest production from children’s theatre company tutti frutti is the heart-warming wintry tale of The Boy Who Cried Wolf (26 Sept - 2 Oct) adapted from Aesop’s fable by Mike Kenny and directed by Wendy Harris. Suitable for children 3+ and their families. The Storm Whale (14 Dec – 4 Jan) is written and directed by Matt Aston, who is also co-directing this year’s pantomime Sleeping Beauty in the Main House. Alone on the night shift, two data analysts monitor radio waves for signs of alien contact. Every shift is the same – but tonight is different. Signals (17 Oct), which comes from the Cosmic Shambles Network and Footprint Theatre, is a dark comedy about being human and space exploration with a side of Jaffa Cakes. Tantgram Theatre, the creators of Team Viking, return with Revelations (18 Oct), a show promising live music, nudity, some tears and lots of laughter in the story of James, who is asked by his best friends for his sperm so they can start a family. Alex and Eliza (19 Oct) tells the story of a young couple in love, fleeing their country and their lives for love and freedom. 68 | Handy Mag | October 2019

In 161 Agostino Tassi was tried for the rape of baroque painter Artemisia Gentileschi. Using court transcripts Breach’s Fringe First and Underbelly Untapped Award production It’s True, It’s True, It’s True (24 Oct) dramatizes the seven-month trial that gripped Renaissance Rome and asks how much has changed in the last four centuries. Through storytelling and physical comedy, Victoria finds out How To Be Amazingly Happy! (25 Oct). The question she wants answering is: how do you find a new ‘once upon a time’ after the ‘happy ever after’ never turned up? York’s raucous spoken word company Say Owt present Jack Dean and his show about the Luddite Rebellion - Say Owt Presents: Jeremiah (26 Oct). It’s 1817 and in a Nottingham pub Jeremiah Brandreth assembled a crew of malcontents with the idea of marching to London, overthrowing the government, wiping the national debt and ending poverty forever. Tickets for Black Men Walking & Hello and Goodbye from £15 (limited availability). Tickets for other Studio shows from £10. Box office 01904 623568. yorktheatreroyal.co.uk

CHARLIE’S COLUMN Getting Active

For most of my life, getting fit has not been an option. There was no PE at school I could partake in and long walks or regular exercise were always out of the question.

With a resting heart rate of 95-120bpm, adding any extra movement would send my heart dangerously high and make my head feel awful. This often led to days of being bed bound, and bad flares with my Arthritis meant I ended up in a bad place mentally. If I were to get a good spell of health, who could facilitate my needs? One of the biggest problems for me and mum to solve was to find a gym that would have a friendly atmosphere and staff that could understand my health conditions. After we got the ok from my doctor, my Mum contacted a local gym in Pickering run by Peter Nelson and told him about my epilepsy, a heart condition and arthritis. Peter felt confident that he could take me on and we met him at his fitness centre. Within 5 minutes of visiting, my mum and I felt completely comfortable and confident about future sessions. The first thing to sort out was the lack of muscle tone in my legs. It went very well and I’ve been back many times. My body feels better after each workout, and Peter has been brilliant in managing my exercises. For me to be able to go to the gym has been the beginning of something that I never thought would ever happen. I’ve certainly come a long way. New statistics from The State of UK Fitness Industry report state that the industry is “Healthier than it has ever been”. Membership is up 4.7%, meaning 1 in 7 people across Britain is a member of a gym. It’s great to see that business is booming, and that people are finding time in their busy lives to stay in shape. I would definitely recommend joining a gym. With the right people behind me, I have started to get fit on a weekly basis. And this means that I’ve even started to feel better within myself. 72 | Handy Mag | October 2019

The Rock Garden is Alive… by Pippa Greenwood

I

f you have ever dreamed of Sound of Music landscapes, then why not get on and create your own? Maybe there’s not room for an entire mountain range in your garden, but there may well be space for your very own rock garden. So what do you need to do? You’ll need to choose a fairly sunny spot, ideally away from overhanging deciduous trees – most alpine plants like a fair bit of light and detest becoming clogged up with deteriorating leaves. Even if space is limited – and it always seems to be – make the rock garden on as large a scale as possible; it’ll have far more impact and planting opportunities, and more of a realistic feel. If possible include some gullies running down the rock garden, perhaps ending in a pond or pool. This means you

will need to arrange the rocks so that water can trickle or run down between them or over their surfaces. Where the water runs over rock there will be no need to install a special surface, but beneath rocks you can use guttering or drainage pipes, making sure that they are hidden either by soil or rock outcrops. Get yourself a good selection of rock. However tempting it might be to recycle the chunks of concrete left after you’ve done a bit of large-scale DIY, the end result will look like a rubble pile with plants! There are local and mail-order suppliers who will have just the sort of material that will look great. You can use a pile of rubble or broken bricks to create the classic mound shape, as this will be hidden later by the good-looking rocks. The rubble pile should also ensure that drainage remains good for the plants later on, as alpines typically hate being too wet. Use upturned turves on top of the mound, laid grassy side down to stop all the soil to be placed upon it from slipping down amongst the rocks. You need a

layer of sandy soil, to a depth of about 30cm (12in), over the top of the turves. Using string and pegs mark out where you want to create each outcrop of rock – if you just stud your mound of soil with randomly inserted bits of rock it’ll end up looking like a pudding, not a rock garden! Once the soil is well-firmed, use a spade (or a trowel if you are working to a smaller scale), to carefully dig out a hole for each rock. They need to be embedded in the soil so that they are properly secure and won’t shift even in heavy rain. Keep the rocks well-positioned and secure by using smaller bits of stone beneath them to wedge them firmly. Next, add some more soil over these bits of stone and then more soil between the rocks when they are all in position. Water it well to settle the soil and top up if necessary. When it comes to choosing plants you can get alpines in nurseries and garden centres now, but generally speaking those plants that are looking their most showy will be on prominent display. a few plants when you are ready to plant up the rock garden, then go on further shopping sprees throughout next spring and summer – this way you can get an array of alpines to provide flowers and interest throughout most of the year. Arrange your plants, still in their pots, on the surface of the soil. When you are happy with how they look, use a trowel to make a planting hole, then remove the pot, pop the plant in the hole, and fill in around it with some compost.
