Y

es it’s a bumper two month issue with an eight week break until you receive another Handy Mag. Ah summer holidays! Let’s hope the weather improves. Whilst this issue has been at print we’ve been getting ourselves settled in at 18F Market Place, our lovely new offices. Nicky and I have separate offices which will be a first. We have been used to chatting across our computer screens whilst working at the same time but will now have to get up and walk around – or shout! I’d like to apologise now to everyone else in the building when we are heading towards a frantic print deadline! Separate offices also means that we can decorate them differently. Nicky promises a floral and cosy space, whilst I know mine will probably be more functional, but with more space we aim to be more organised and efficient. Well that’s the aim! Feel free to drop in

and see us between 9 and 3.30 most days. There is a post box on the ground floor for all those competition entries, but if you’d like to hand them in personally, our office door is on the first floor. This month we were invited to try out the new Energi York trampoline park at Poppleton. You can read all about our family trip on page 40. It was great fun and well worth a visit. If you’re looking for something to do in the next few weeks there’s a whole host of events and activities to keep you and your family occupied, whatever your age. For local businesses and services please have a look through the Handy Mag and our busy index, and if you have received a great service from one of our advertisers, feel free to let us know. The deadline for our October issue is 6th September so it’s not really that long until we’ll be back! Well done to Mr Buckman for winning our June competition. See you in September

HERITAGE OPEN DAY MARKS THE 75TH ANNIVERSARY FOR POPPLETON COMMUNITY RAILWAY NURSERY

P

oppleton Community Railway Nursery is Britain’s last surviving Railway Nursery. On Saturday 10th September, the Nursery is opening from 10am until 4pm to mark their very special 75th Anniversary. There will be an opportunity to walk the red carpet (weather permitting), using the carpet, rope and poles that were originally used by British Railways for Royal rail visits, and a chance to see the work of the Nursery and what it offers the local community. The Lord Mayor of York, Councillor Dave Taylor, will also be attending and will cut the Anniversary cake. The Nursery relies on volunteers for all aspects of its day to day activities and the team are always

looking to recruit more people to come along. There are a variety of opportunities to fulfil a range of different needs, interests, levels of ability and time commitments. The hours are flexible and support and training is available. The Nursery also has a partnership with health agencies in the area, which has long found horticultural skills training to be therapeutic for adults recovering from mental health issues. The benefits of working at the nursery include

improvements in confidence, social development through working alongside a range of different people and the opportunity to make new friends and build relationships. It also helps people to learn about growing plants, simple DIY skills and could help to enhance their future career prospects. Why not pop along to Poppleton Community Nursery on Saturday 10th September to see what it’s all about!

HOLIDAY READS For many of us, the best thing about a holiday is the opportunity to get lost in a book, without feeling guilty about unread emails, dirty dishes or the other 1001 daily chores that rudely interrupt our reading. If you’re looking for a novel to get lost in, we have plenty to recommend.

Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet

H.P. Wood In 1904, the tavern beneath Magruder’s Curiosity Cabinet has become a haven for the many ‘unusuals’ who call Coney Island their home. There’s Rosalind, who’s as likely to wear a suit as a dress, Zeph, who lost both his legs in a childhood accident, eight year old P-Ray, who never speaks and collects fleas, and any other number of characters. After finding herself alone and penniless, Kitty Hayward finds solace at Magruder’s, but her peace may well be short-lived. Anarchy is in the air, and the plague is sweeping through the streets. These characters will stay with you long after your holiday is over.

The Last of Us - Rob Ewing On a remote Scottish island, a pandemic has killed most of the population. There are no adults left. Just five children, trying to survive on the tinned food they find in neighbouring houses. There’s Rona, the narrator, along with little Alex and their leader, Elizabeth, who makes sure they brush their teeth and carry on with their school lessons. And then there’s Calum Ian and Duncan, who are starting to resent Elizabeth’s authority. A beautiful, heart-wrenching story. Fishbowl – Bradley Somer All of life’s highs and lows are played out in one apartment block by its many inhabitants. There’s ‘the Villain Connor Radley’, ‘the Evil Seductress Faye’, ‘Stoic Jimenez’ and agoraphobic ‘Clare the Shut-in’, amongst others. And then there’s Ian – a humble goldfish, who’s about to take a plunge from the twenty-seventh floor. In the four seconds it takes him to fall, he’ll discover more about the apartment’s inhabitants than perhaps they even know about themselves. Insightful, original and entertaining. 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Night Witch A book by local York author David Dale It is not until the reader is some way on in the story that the idea of the Night Witch is introduced and even then, that person’s identity remains a mystery until the very end. David Dale’s cleverly drawn mystery Night Witch is full of suspense and intrigue, set against a backdrop of communist China and a corrupt police force. Night Witch revolves around two central characters, the western Jason Lamont who is in China teaching English and the Chinese Jin-Mei, and the drama begins around their romantic entanglement. However, it quickly moves on, drawing in other characters and become a backdrop for a compelling tale of murder mystery. Night Witch is a commentary on the political and cultural situation in China that arose after the Tiananmen Square massacre but the author does not use the book as a platform to lecture or comment. Instead he weaves a clever tale of human weakness and tension with excellent characterisation, a gripping drama which will keep the reader turning the pages avidly until the very end. David Dale was born in York in 1949 and educated to post graduate level with a Post Graduate Certificate in Education and a degree in East Asian Studies studying Japanese, Mandarin, Mongolian, Cantonese and classical Chinese. He has a passion for illustrating and cartooning and has illustrated for BBC York and is also a member of York Writers’. He has worked and lived all over the world - even as a merchant seaman in the Gulf of Mexico. All of his novels stem from personal experience and as such possess an element of truth. Night Witch is available online from

www.austinmacauley.com/book/night-witch or most internet booksellers.

TRAVEL

SUPERSTITIONS

BY MARY MAHON

For many, a summer break is almost like a ritual each year; travelling is now so easy and accessible, people have a growing opportunity to explore the far reaches of the world. However for some, travelling is nerve-wracking. There are an abundance of situations where things can go wrong; planes falling, ships sinking, trains derailing! Yet around the world there are many superstitions to prevent bad luck when travelling. Numbers get a bad rap around the world, with certain numbers being deducted from rows on flights, or from room or floor numbers in hotels. Italy abhors the number ‘17’, as the Roman translation of VIXI, (an anagram of XVII) ‘I have lived’, suggests death, whilst in China, the Cantonese ‘4’ sounds like the word ‘death’ itself. Similarly, in the USA and the UK the number ‘13’ is an omen of bad luck, causing many airlines and hotels to abandon its use. Phrases, too, hold a certain power. In Norway ‘tvi tvi’ was used to put a curse on someone that you liked, the idea being that if somebody had already cursed you then the evil spirits had no reason to bother you. A polar idea developed in Ukraine with the belief that a few minutes of communal silence would bring a traveller good luck before their journey. Most drastic perhaps, were the solutions in Nepal to fix malfunctioning aircraft; farm animals were sacrificed to honour Akash Bhairab, the Hindu God of the Sky, ensuring a safe flight. Whilst there are a whole range of beliefs and superstitions around the world for travellers to test out, fear in the end is a state of mind. Logically, the risk of a travel catastrophe is incredibly low and the brief time spent travelling compared to the memories made on holiday is ultimately insignificant for most. Although I may still stick to crossing my fingers during the take-off... 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

your campaign. Being clear about the audience for your products and services makes it easier to target them. Your audience might be young professionals. Your ad must talk in the way to appeal to your audience. Make an offer that will appeal to them in a publication they will read.

Which marketing and advertising brings in most sales for you?

K

eeping track of marketing and advertising spend is advisable at any time. With an uncertain economy this is even more important as is making the best use of the resources you already have. The first important step is to be clear what is it you want to achieve. Set objectives based on business goals, for example suppose you want to increase sales of a specific product or service or bookings by ?%. Set marketing objectives to achieve this. Make your objectives SMART, that is, specific, measurable, achievable, realistic and timed. Specific – how are you going to achieve your objectives? Where will you advertise? Are you sending a mailing out by E mail to your customers? Are you using social media?

26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Measurable – Monitor enquiries and sales by phone and your web site etc? How many enquiries and sales do you need? Achievable – how will you achieve your objectives? Do you have the resources in terms of staff, investment and is it physically possible.

Your next step for successful marketing on a budget is to look back over the campaign. What marketing, advertising and PR did you do, which brought in most enquiries. Did most enquiries come from your web site or by phone? No matter how small or large your campaign your evaluation process is vital for the success of future campaigns. Monitor the number of enquiries, sales and bookings you received and if online the number of mentions you receive. How many contacts and followers have you gained on Twitter and Facebook?

Successful marketing on a budget

Timed – Set a time frame for your campaign. Doing this will increase your success. Leaving a campaign open ended results in plans put to once side, abandoned or campaigns drift.

Set a budget and stick to it. Don’t use any marketing activity in isolation. Use on and offline marketing together for maximum impact. For example combine a mail out with an offer on your web site and an advertisement in your local publication. Take the cost of each marketing activity and compare sales from each activity to find your return on investment.

Who you are aiming your products and services at?

Realistic – Is your plan something that will meet your objectives? Is it practical?

DENTURE PROBLEMS Dentures tend to get a bad press however they are one of the most cost effective methods of replacing teeth. One problem is that people tend not to replace them often enough so they become discoloured , loose by Christine Parker or worn. BDS (GDC 72136) If left a badly fitting denture can compromise the health of the adjacent teeth eventually causing further tooth loss. There are several ways these problems can be reduced.

• Avoid denture breakages by putting a couple of inches of water in the sink when you clean them. • Use plain soap and a brush to clean the fit surface and the outer surface paying particular attention to the inside of the lower front teeth and the outside of the upper molars, these are areas where tartar builds up. • Rinse thoroughly before placing in plain water and if desired a lukewarm solution of denture cleaner. Not cleaning before soaking may cause the debris on your denture to fix onto the denture. • Avoid hot water it can bleach your dentures leaving the gum work looking very pale. • Clean the supporting teeth really well especially where they touch the denture. • Take your denture out at night. • See your dentist at least annually, they can help prolong the life of your remaining teeth and reline or replace your denture before it causes problems. So if your dentures could do with an overhaul then contact Jan at Howardian Dental and in August you will qualify for a free 20 minute Oral Health Session.

NORTH YORKSHIRE COMMUNITY MESSAGING By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 North Yorkshire Police have recently launched the new Community Messaging Service. This is a new system that replaces all of the old and outdated systems that have previously been used to contact organisations such as Neighbourhood Watch. The Community Messaging platform is accessible by all members of your Local Police Teams to use and is available to any member of the public or business within the County of North Yorkshire. The system provides an easy way to get information to the public in a format that suits them. You can choose to receive messages by email, by SMS or by voicemail should you prefer. Whilst the use of Community Messaging is still very much in its infancy we have already sent messages with information about current crime trends in specific areas, appeals for help locating missing persons and to advertise upcoming community events which your local police team will be attending. Its quick to register and can be done online at www.nycm.co.uk or you can print a registration form and fill in by hand. You can also contact your local Police Team who can send you a copy of the form and ensure that you are entered onto the system promptly. When you register you can specify the types of alerts that you are interested in receiving and the system will recognise your address details and ensure that you only receive alerts that are relevant to your location. You can enter multiple locations on your registration so that you would receive alerts relevant to your home address, work address and children’s school or any other area that you may have an interest in. At the end of June there were 1273 users registered in the City of York and we are hoping to increase this number rapidly as the more people that are on the system the more effective it can be. I hope that many of you will take a couple of minutes to complete the registration form. If you have any questions just visit the North Yorkshire Community Messaging website or ask a member of your local Police Team. 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

THE PIRATES OF PENZANCE Swashbuckling adventure with tender-hearted pirates and bumbling policemen! Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company return to The Joseph Rowntree Theatre in September 2016, for piratical goings-on in one of Gilbert and Sullivan’s most famous and popular hits, The Pirates of Penzance. As a child, Frederic was apprenticed to a band of tender-hearted pirates, by his hard-of-hearing nurse, who misheard her instructions. Today Frederic celebrates the completion of his 21st year, which means he is now free to return to society and respectability, or so he thinks. Throw into the mix a Major General who knows nothing of military strategy, his large family, and the timid police force, and you have all the ingredients for a fun-filled adventure. To help everyone discover (or re-discover) their inner pirate, a specially created newspaper, with instructions, will be available to all audience

members, so they can make their very own pirate hat! Performances run from Thursday, 22 September 2016 to Saturday, 24 September 2016, starting at 7:30pm each evening, plus a Saturday Matinee at 2:30pm. Tickets are priced at £12 (Adults); £10 (Concessions), with under 16s free, and are available from The Joseph Rowntree Theatre Box Office: 01904 501935 or online at www.josephrowntreetheatre.co.uk Visit our website: www.jorvikgsc.org.uk, find us on GILBERT AND SULLIVAN'S Facebook or follow us on Twitter.

GIANT MAZE CELEBRATES ROALD DAHL CENTENARY

Open daily Sat 16 July – Mon 5 September 2016. See website www.yorkmaze.co.uk for details. special phizz-whizzing tribute to the amazing storyteller.”

forget it. Much of what we aim to achieve here at York Maze.”

Roald Dahl fan and farmer Tom Pearcy has carved a giant image featuring some of the famous children’s author’s iconic characters into a 15 acre field of maize plants near York to create a giant maze. The York Maze celebrates 100 years of Roald Dahl who was born in 1916.

The York Maze design is a montage of Roald Dahl characters and features a depiction of Gene Wilder as Willy Wonka. Other Roald Dahl characters hidden in the maze include; The BFG, The Fantastic Mr Fox and the Enormous Crocodile. The pathways in the field form an intricate maze for visitors to explore. The York Maze is believed to be the largest maze in Europe and one of the largest in the world.

Guest of honour to officially launch the maze was British actress Julie Dawn Cole who played Veruca Salt alongside Gene Wilder in the 1971 film ‘Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory’. Julie took a helicopter flight over the giant 15 acre maize maze to see the design.

Says Tom Pearcy, “Roald Dahl’s stories speak to the child in us all and are loved by children, parents and grandparents. Throughout 2016, there will be celebrations for Roald Dahl 100 around the UK but I wanted to pay my own

“Willy Wonka is definitely my favourite Roald Dahl character,” says Pearcy, “he is an adult but still has childish qualities, incredible curiosity and excitement. He relishes nonsense and reminds us that life is fun and we shouldn’t

about bouncing though. There are also games, foam pits, a dodgeball area, basketball hoops, giant airbag and an assault course.

With an age range from 6 to 49 across both of our families Energi York would be a test of entertainment for younger children to teenagers and adults. There aren’t many attractions that can appeal to such a wide range for a whole hour.

The children were off straight away. Max, age 6, was like a jack-in-the-box and Jack, 10, ran up and down the trampolines with ease. Both teenagers, Imogen (19) and Jared (16), headed for the assault course and the balance beam over a large foam pit where a duel ensued. Having not been particularly keen before arriving, both Dads made a very enthusiastic start, even trying some flips! Nicky and I were more cautious and it took us the whole hour to learn how to jump from one trampoline to the next!

Before getting on the trampolines everyone has to watch a sobering health and safety video and we nervously walked up the steps to face a huge indoor park filled with wall to wall trampolines. It’s not all

From getting stuck in the foam pit to flips on the gigantic pillow and Smith versus Whalen dodgeball that descended in to chaos, it was a full hour of laughing. And whilst an hour doesn’t sound like

orking at the Handy Mag we have some fantastic opportunities to visit events and attractions. Imagine our delight when Energi York, the new trampoline park at Nether Poppleton, asked us to give it a try. The park has been open since May and is full of shiny new interconnected trampolines.

“Absolutely brilliant – what a laugh!” Jack, age 10 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

long, we all crawled out at the end completely exhausted! One of the things that impressed us the most was that not only could all the activities be enjoyed by all ages, but the staff members were all friendly, helpful and kept a watchful but unobtrusive eye on everyone whilst we bounded, flipped and jumped around. Afterwards the café and viewing area is the perfect place to relax, recharge and indulge in locally sourced food and drink whilst laughing at everyone else’s attempts to trampoline! Energi York have really thought about how they can engage the wider community with structured sessions for under 5s, individuals with additional needs, women’s and men’s fitness, toddlers, teenage disco and Energi Club for over 18s.

“I especially enjoyed duelling on the balance beam and family dodgeball was so funny!” Imogen Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th September

THE MICKLEGATE RUN SOAPBOX CHALLENGE SUNDAY 28TH AUGUST, 10AM TILL 5PM. This event is destined to be a daring but hilarious go-cart race down the cobbles of Micklegate, one of York’s best known streets. The Soap Box Challenge will be held over the August Bank Holiday weekend. 42 teams will compete, racing their homemade soapbox carts across the ancient cobbles. Starting from Micklegate Bar the carts will shake and vibrate their way downwards towards the River Ouse, with trophies to be won! Promising to be a fantastic, fun day out for the whole family for local residents and visitors alike, it is hoped the race will become a favourite ‘must do’ in the city’s events’ calendar. It is anticipated that the event will attract huge interest and raise lots of money for charity. Spectators and competitors will also be able to enjoy live music, street food, children’s events and shopping. So if you want to laugh out loud all day long on Sunday 28th August 2016 head for Micklegate, “York’s finest street.”

TRAVEL New Delhi

N

ew Delhi takes you by surprise, an almost European city with all the exotic colours of India but a world away from the hustle and bustle of Old Delhi and much of the country. As a final gift from the British Empire, it’s a pleasant city of tree lined avenues and stunning vistas with elegant buildings, vast open spaces and a fair share of museums and historic sites. In December 1911, the British had announced that India’s capital, then in Calcutta, would return to Delhi, a more central location where a new city would be built, worthy of the Raj. King George V laid the foundation stone but controversy raged for almost two years, plagued by bad omens and a difficult choice of site. Work was finally handed over to top English architect Edwin Lutyens, renowned for his extravagance. Lutyens was seconded by Herbert Baker and though the two men often disagreed, they designed a grand capital in ‘imperial style’,

spacious, symmetrical, with a few elements of Indian architecture to pay tribute to local tradition. It took 20 years to complete. In a prime location on Raisana Hill, the President’s Residence, formerly the Viceroy’s House, rises above the city in near grandiose isolation. Built with 700 million bricks, it claims vast interior courtyards and over 350 rooms, is larger than Versailles, and has a subtle mix of East and West. There are stone elephants and classical columns, Indian bells, a copper dome and a Jaipur column carved with oak leaves and topped with a lotus. Other government venues include Baker’s secretarial buildings and the circular Parliament House, 173 metres around, enclosed by colonnaded verandas. There, independence was hailed by a bugler in 1947 and the new constitution was drafted. From Raisina Hill, the ceremonial Rajpath, or King’s Way, leads through Lutyens’ great plaza

to the massive sandstone arch of India gate. Rising 42 metres above the ground, India’s national monument commemorates those who died in the British Indian army and guards the eternal flame. The Rajpath is at the heart of celebrations on Republic Day but with its water features, trees and lawns, it’s always a favourite haunt of tourists and locals. The canopy which sheltered a statue of George V is now empty, but chipmunks run across the grass, children splash in the boating lake and stalls sell candyfloss, coconuts and ice cream. It’s a great place to stroll in the cool of the evening when India Gate stands all lit up against the darkening sky. Not so far away, the great sweep of Connaught Place showcases a fine Georgian style reminiscent of the Royal Crescent in Bath. Designed by Robert Tor Russell, a lesser known yet prolific architect, it’s the capital’s top commercial hub with three concentric circles of shops opening on colonnaded arcades and roads radiating in every direction, busiest of all the famous Janpath. The area has shopping venues for everyone, from pavement stalls to luxury outlets. There are cotton shirts and pashmina shawls, raw silk and cashmere, carpets, antiques, costume jewellery and tribal craft. The central park hosts cultural events while all around, food stalls and restaurants serve a wide variety of cuisines from India and beyond. After a challenging tour of the ‘real India’, it’s the perfect place to bargain for those last minute souvenirs before heading home.

IS YOUR BUSINESS READY FOR AUTO ENROLMENT??

Y

ou may have seen the adverts on TV with groups of workers shouting “We’re all in!” but what exactly are they going on about? Well, Auto Enrolment is the biggest change to workplace pensions in over a decade, and is basically the process of employers enrolling their workers in to a pension scheme. If you’re a business owner and employ people, you will be receiving a letter from the Pensions Regulator on what you are expected to do.

What is Auto-enrolment? Auto-enrolment is the Governments way of encouraging people to save into a pension, and it requires businesses to have a work based pension scheme. Qualifying employees are then “automatically” enrolled and the employee and employer both pay contributions into it. Qualifying employees are those who are aged between 22 and state pension age, and earn over £10,000 per year.

Will Auto-enrolment affect my business? If you own a business and employ people then this will affect you, and you will need to make sure you comply with the strict rules and deadlines set by the Pensions Regulator. However, if you own your own limited company and are the only director and employee, it may not apply to your business.

What do I need to do?

WHEN – find out your Staging Date – the date by which you need to comply with the new rules – this is set by the Pensions Regulator and depends on how

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE

Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants

many employees you have. Most small businesses staging date will be between 2016 and 2017. It is recommended you start planning 12 months in advance. HOW – you need to find a suitable Pension Scheme. For small businesses there are a handful of providers, including NEST (set up by the Government specifically for Auto-enrolment). The scheme you chose will depend on cost, quality and investment profile. WHO – once you have your scheme, your need to: Assess your workforce – consider who are qualifying employees, and who needs to be automatically enrolled. Communicate with your workforce – tell all your employees about the pension changes and explain their options. Employees who don’t qualify may still be eligible to join. Automatically enrol your qualifying employees – the relevant employees join the pension scheme. Pay contributions into the pension – minimum contributions must be paid into the scheme from both employer and employee combined.

Do employees have to join? Qualifying employees have to be automatically enrolled but can chose to “opt out” and leave the scheme within a month, and receive a refund of any contributions.

If you employ people and want to know more on how Autoenrolment affects you, or how we can help run your scheme, contact us now for a FREE Initial Consultation with a Director (no obligation) email phil.kitchen@pclg.co.uk, call 01904 558300 or visit www.pclg.co.uk for more information. YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

Plan Your Planting By Pippa Greenwood

Although gardens are now looking a little tired, the drier soil means it is not a good time for planting shrubs or trees. So, do what you can to perk up flower beds and borders and then start to plan ahead for spring, as garden centres are starting to take delivery of bulbs which will get your garden looking fabulous early next year. Many bulbs start to put down roots at the end of summer and into autumn, so prompt planting is advisable, though tulips are best planted in October. Another option is mail order catalogues which have a bigger

choice of bulbs, often including more unusual varieties. Time is of the essence, however, so send off for these as soon as possible so that you can choose some delightful bulbs ready for planting in the next month or so. Before buying, decide where in the garden you can cram in a few bulbs. As they are often in flower before the rest of the garden gets going, they can be used to under-plant existing trees, shrubs and herbaceous flowers. Bulbs are an excellent way to make the most of every square metre of soil, and to

ensure that your garden looks lovely as early as possible in the year. Many bulbs do well in containers, so if you have a permanently planted up container this too can be underplanted with several layers of spring flowering bulbs. Use a transplanting trowel to minimise damage to the existing plants’ roots.

www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 59

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE If you are unsure which bulbs go together, don’t feel frightened to experiment. Alternatively, many catalogues and garden centres offer mixed selections of bulbs for specific purposes and there are also some lovely packs of bulbs following colour themes. These usually represent good value for money too.

of the daffodils until at least six weeks after flowering.

If you have a dull patch of lawn, brighten it up in the early months by planting some small bulbs.

Larger bulbs generally seem to do better than smaller versions of the same variety.

Crocus or miniature narcissus are particularly useful, as once the flowers have faded you don’t have much deteriorating foliage to cope with.

For large quantities of the same variety, buy a net of bulbs from your garden centre or direct from a mail order specialist nursery.

In larger areas, consider planting up drifts of full-sized daffodils, but make sure you don’t want to mow the grass beneath these trees or shrubs regularly, as you can’t safely remove the leaves

If you can’t plant your bulbs promptly, keep them in a cool and well ventilated spot before planting, as this is essential to reduce the risk of them deteriorating.

Check that bulbs are in good condition before you buy, avoiding any which show even the slightest signs of deterioration such as sunken brown spots, excessive softness or patches of bluish mould.

Next month I’ll be looking at novel ways to make the best use of the gorgeous array of available bulbs, so plant some now and then treat yourself to a few more for September planting!

Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com for Pippa’s ‘Winter thru’ Spring’ collection of vegetables for planting next month, a really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items including Nemaslug to control slugs, pop-up crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, ladybirds to control greenfly, pullout mini tunnels, signed books and lots more besides.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

FIRST DRIVE

By James Baggott

MINI Countryman vs Skoda Yeti

All MINIs have a distinctive and instantly recognisable look to them, and with the Countryman range, it carries this identifiable image into a stockier frame to give you more space and practicality. The stylish bodywork helps to make the Countryman a tantalising option in the CUV sector and with great additions and features to match, it’s difficult to see why you wouldn’t choose it. However, it has competition from Skoda’s Yeti, a CUV similar in size and price and both cars have their good elements. For starters, both models have had recent redesigns to create more space and alter their looks to be more modern and up-to-date. It has to be said that the Countryman certainly looks better than the Yeti, with the distinguishing features of the MINI range, such as the shape, the headlights and front grille, to make it truly stand out on the road. The size of both models also 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

make them very practical, with the smaller Countryman offering 350 litres of space in the boot with the seats up, whilst the Yeti has only 66 litres more in a car 20cm longer and 10cm taller. This means you can get more for your money space-wise in the Countryman, especially as the range starts off cheaper than the Skoda. Customisability has also been a recent appeal of the MINI market, and with the Countryman this is no exception. With MINI’s design additions that can be fitted to the whole range, you can personalise your Countryman as much as you wish. Also you can fit satellite navigation, stereo system, leather trim and ‘Run-Flat’ tyres to your model; great options that can be added to any of the range. Good options aren’t as easy to come by on the Yeti, as the better choices to fit are only available further up the Yeti model range, whilst almost all are compatible with every Countryman model. To compete with the Yeti’s off-road capabilities in the Yeti

Outdoor and more expensive models, MINI offers the ‘All-4’ allwheel drive system throughout the class. With a higher ride height and great grip on offer, the Countryman All-4 system will give you confidence both on and off road, with only a small premium on top of the twowheel drive versions. The Yeti’s base model is fitted with a 1.2-litre TSI petrol engine producing 110hp, whilst the 1.6-litre in the One produces just 98hp. This doesn’t compromise much in speed with only a marginal difference in acceleration. Overall, with a wider variety of vehicle and equipment options, value for money and great 4x4 system, the MINI Countryman is the better option of the two, and with the great looking bodywork to encase you, why wouldn’t you want to drive it? The MINI Countryman is available from £17,105 for the One Countryman, with the top of the range 218hp John Cooper Works All-4 starting at £28,985.

Meanwhile, the mice do all the work (berated by an intellectual woodpecker), for no pay. Saleable goods are then placed on view where they generate no profit at all. As an owner of a cat myself I know it’s inevitable that you will have to take your cat to the vets’, be it for an annual vaccination, health check, neutering or if your beloved kitty becomes ill. Cats are independent, territorial and need to feel in control of their surroundings. A visit to the vets’ is likely to cause all cats a certain degree of stress. At Station House Vets we are in the final stages of preparing to become an accredited cat-friendly practice. Our team will care for your cat gently, respectfully and with the correct professional skills. We will also endeavour to make your visits as stress-free as possible for both you and your cat. Stress can begin before you step though the practice door, with the ordeal of transporting your cat being potentially difficult and upsetting for all! It is important to transport your cat in a secure and robust pet carrier. If the carrier is an open/mesh design, partially cover it with a cloth or towel. Familiarise your cat with the carrier by storing it in the house. Putting some bedding that smells of home in the carrier can also have a calming effect or try rubbing your cat’s face with a soft cloth to pick up scent, then rubbing the cloth around the carrier and leaving it inside. Sprays that can help calm your cat include synthetic cat scents or pheromones such as Feliway’ or ‘Pet Remedy,’ both available from Station House Vets. When travelling, ensure that the pet carrier is secured so that it can’t move around. Drive carefully as your cat can pick up on your stress, and keep noise and sharp movements to a minimum so as not to startle them. If your cat panics, you could wrap them loosely in a blanket or towel within the carrier to make them feel safe. Once you have arrived at the surgery you will find a separated waiting area especially for you and your cat, with an elevated shelf to place pet carriers on. Or, if you would prefer to wait in the car with your cat, we are happy to come and get you when the vet is ready. If requested in advance, we will endeavour to give your cat an appointment when there are no dogs booked in to the surgery. We hope our continuing efforts make our practice a calm and cat friendly place, and we look forward to seeing you and your cat soon. A MEMORABLE MONTH FOR CHURCHFIELD IN WIGGINTON The judges summed up their assessment with the following statement:“This is a wonderful small local park which has much to offer the local community. Everyone involved should be proud of their achievements. It is plain to see all the work that the various people/groups have carried out.”

T

he Open Space in Greenshaw Drive has been given the “Green Flag Community Award”. The Green Flag Community Award is a national award that recognises quality green spaces in the UK that are managed by voluntary and community groups. The award is part of the Green Flag Award scheme, the national standard for quality parks and green space.

Diesel is a lovely boy who just loves cuddles and his toys. He has previously lived with children and we feel he would be suitable to live with children of junior school age again. Diesel has also previously lived with another dog and could live with a compatible dog again, and possibly with cats. He would be best with someone around most of the time as he loves people so much he gets a little upset when left. Please offer this lovely lad a new home. Ella is a sweet and gentle girl with a lovely temperament. We feel she could live with children of junior school age as she is so good natured. Ella has previously lived with another dog so could do so again with a compatible dog. Ella has epilepsy but it has very little effect on her daily life. Please ask at reception for more in-formation; we will be happy to explain her condition. She is a very active dog who loves her walks, she also is very good at agility and would love to do this in her new home. 72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

July also saw the installation of a new inclusive roundabout in the play area which will give lots of fun for the many children who use Churchfield. It can also accommodate a wheelchair. The funds to provide the roundabout came from several national and local grant providers and a considerable amount of local fund raising. Further improvements are planned for this popular amenity so watch this space!

JOIN OUR LOTTERY We are your local RSPCA, and take care of up to 75 dogs, 72 cats and many small animals.

We can only do this because of the generous support of people like you. If you can help us by donating just £5 a month you can join our Lottery Club, each month three winners are drawn for prizes of £60, £25 and £15, with a £100 bonus in December. SHORT STORY THE TOO HOT TUB by Jackie Brewster “What are you doing here?” Tony asked. “Come to check up on me?” Richard had anticipated some chaos when he popped round to visit his dad, but hadn’t expected to find him on the patio stood up to his armpits in a wheelie bin full of water. “No,” Richard lied. “Mum asked me to pop round to see if you’ve watered her Busy Lizzies.” Though the sight of the drooping bedding plants had already answered that question for him. “Do you want me to ask what you’re doing?” Richard asked. “Or is it better if I don’t know?” “I don’t mind telling you,” Tony said, “so long as you don’t spoil the surprise for your mum.” “The surprise that you’ve filled your dustbin with water and then climbed in it?” Richard asked. “No longer a dustbin, Dickie,” Tony said proudly. “What you have here is a fully functioning hot tub. I wanted to surprise your mum when she got back from her spa weekend.” “She’ll certainly be surprised,” Richard agreed. “She can sit in here of an evening and put her white wine spritzer and pickled onions on the open lid.” Tony tapped the lid behind him where an empty pickled onion jar was rolling around. “These things go for megabucks.” “Why’s it bubbling like that?” Richard asked, studying the dark water more closely. “I borrowed the pump out of the fish tank,” Tony said. “Can’t have a 74 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

hot tub without bubbles.” “Don’t the goldfish mind?” queried Richard. “They’ll be alright for a bit,” Tony said. “And how are you heating the water?” Richard asked. “You what?” Tony said. “It’s a hot tub, so how are you making it hot?” “No, it doesn’t want to be hot,” Tony scratched his ear with the pickled onion fork, “it’s for when you’re too hot, you know, to cool you down a bit.” “So you’ve filled the dustbin with cold water, stuck the fish tank pump in there and climbed in,” Richard said as calmly as possible. “Pleasant is it?” “It’s not bad.” Tony’s teeth rattled slightly. “I could stay in here all day.” “Surely you’d start to prune after a bit?” Richard noticed his dad’s finger tips. “How long have you been in there exactly?” “Not long,” Tony said defensively, “I’ll get out when you’ve gone. Probably could do with a spot of lunch, now that I’ve eaten all the pickled onions.” “Why not get out now?” Richard said, then a horrible thought flashed through his mind. “You’re not naked in there are you?” “No!” Tony batted the suggestion away. “I’ve got my best undercrackers on.” “So get out then,” Richard said.

“You can’t get out,” Richard grinned, “can you?” “I did have a try earlier,” Tony said. “I’ll have another go in a bit.” “Do you want some help?” “No, I’m fine.” “You’re stuck aren’t you?” “Well, maybe just a little bit.” Richard walked around the dustbin assessing the situation. “Hang on, Dad.” He took a firm hold of the back of the bin and tipped. “It’ll be easier if we release some of the water first.” The water sploshed gently over the side, wetting Richard’s feet. “Careful Dickie,” Tony said nervously, “there are quite a few gallons in here.” Just then the sheer weight overwhelmed Richard and the whole bin tipped over. Tony was thrown out onto the patio like the contents of a trawler net. “At least we’ve watered the Busy Lizzies,” Richard said. “You alright?” “Never better.” Tony picked himself up. “Is there time to refill it before your mum gets back?”

“Like I said,” Tony looked uncomfortable, “in a bit.” Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th September
