elcome to the Aug/ Sep edition. August and September are full of equine events from the iconic Ebor Festival in York (19th – 22nd August) to Malton Stables Open Day (Sunday 13th September). With the recent opening of the Jack Berry House in Malton for injured jockeys, the importance and scale of the horse-interest in this region is remarkable. Horse racing is big business and it also supports a lot of local business and traditional trades in the region. I sometimes wonder if this area has the highest numbers of horses and cyclists on its roads! Now for my amazing horse fact: Did you know that, dating back to Roman times, todays thoroughbreds were originally bred in our area by crossing native breeds with Arab stallions imported from the Middle East? At the Handy Mag we have been awash with tradesmen and other businesses looking to advertise their services and catch the moment (almost to the point of saying no room at the inn) as others are asking us to ‘stop the advert’ as they are too busy! It brings mixed emotions when we are told that the advert worked so well that we are no longer needed; at least for a few months. If you are one of the many that are undertaking a ‘house or garden project’ this summer, good luck and be sure to plan ahead so that you are not having to wait for busy tradesmen. I hear we are heading for a shortage of bricks and brickies! If you are organising an event in October onwards, don’t forget to let us know so we can help you publicise it in the magazine, as well as online. The next deadline will be Tuesday 8th September. Have a great rest of the summer. See you in October!

Have you been left out of someone’s Will?

A

ccording to the Office for National Statistics there were 506,790 deaths in the UK in 2013. The death of a relative is always a difficult and distressing time but imagine how you would feel if you had been treated unfairly by being excluded from his Last Will and Testament? Or you were concerned about the validity of the Will? Whilst no amount of money can ever compensate you for the death of a loved one, in these circumstances you may have to make the difficult decision to contest the deceased’s Will. You may be able to make a claim under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975 for reasonable financial provision from the deceased’s estate if you are one of the following: • The deceased’s spouse or civil partner, • A former spouse or civil partner, • A cohabiting partner for at least two years just before the deceased’s death • A child of the deceased including an adult child. • A child treated as a child of the deceased. This can sometimes include a foster child. • A person who was being wholly or partly maintained by the deceased just before the deceased’s death. Whilst making a claim is perhaps the furthest thing from your mind when coming to terms with your loss, it is vital that you do not delay in obtaining legal advice. Strict time limits apply 6 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

by Philip Chapman

and normally such a claim must be brought to court within 6 months of the date of the grant of representation (a grant of probate if there is a will, a grant of letters of administration if not). You will have to prove that the deceased failed to make ‘reasonable financial’ provision for you. What is ‘reasonable’ depends upon a number of factors including your own personal circumstances. We often hear from relatives of the deceased about their concerns that, at the time the will was made, the deceased did not have the mental capacity to make the will. This is a growing concern with the Alzheimer Society reporting that by 2015 there will be 850,000 people in the UK with dementia. Questions are often raised as to whether the deceased understood the full extent of his assets or the effect of the will and in some cases he may even have suffering from delusions which led to a relative being alienated and left out of the will. However mental capacity is only one of the grounds upon which you can challenge the validity of the deceased’s will. The others include: • The will was not signed or witnessed in accordance with the legal requirements. • Someone unduly influenced the deceased into making the will. • The will is invalid for some other reason • The deceased promised you a share of his or her estate and relying upon that promise you acted to your detriment e.g. by performing services for the deceased. The making of a will is not only for older people to consider. In

2014, 78% of adults aged 30 – 39, 54% of adults aged 50 -59 and 15% of UK adults over 70 did not have a will, according to a survey by unbiased.co.uk. If you die intestate (i.e. without a will) legal rules will decide in what order your assets with be shared out. This may not be what you want. So by making a will you can ensure that the assets you have worked hard for are divided in accordance with your wishes. It can also, with the right advice and guidance, help reduce the amount of Inheritance Tax payable. If you do not wish to include someone in your will you can prepare a letter of wishes to accompany your will explaining the reason for your decision. Good legal advice at the time of making a will is essential. Your Will is the most important document you will ever sign….we do not have a voice from beyond the grave. Mitchells Solicitors understands the need to deal with these matters in a sensitive but professional manner. If you want advice about making a claim against an estate or challenging a will, Philip Chapman or Lorna Pratt will be happy to discuss this with you in more detail. If you have grounds for making a claim we may be able to act for you on a no win no fee basis. Our Kelly Cutsforth can discuss your requirements for the making of a will and a Lasting Power of Attorney. For more information telephone 0800 2461 012 or visit www. mitchellssolicitors.co.uk.

Poppleton Artists Exhibition 2015 Now in its 15th year, Poppleton Artists Exhibition offers the opportunity to see the work of over 40 talented artists from Poppleton. The Exhibition will showcase a wide variety of art, often inspired by the artists’ favourite local places or by the beautiful and iconic Yorkshire scenery. The event also supports the upkeep of the Tithe Barn by donating a percentage of takings to this historic and beautiful building. This year we are very pleased to welcome Jonathan Cowap from Radio York to our Exhibition. Jonathan will be opening the Preview Evening on Friday 28th August. June Hardy, Chair of the Poppleton Artists Exhibition Committee, said: ‘Poppleton has a flourishing community of artists and the Poppleton Artists Exhibition offers an opportunity for the public to view their work, discover the picturesque Tithe Barn, surrounding village and countryside. All this and the opportunity to sample some excellent home made cakes.’

Preview Evening Friday 28th August 6.30pm to 9pm. Saturday 29th to Sunday 30th August 10am to 6pm. Monday 31st August 10am to 4pm.

Tickets for the preview are available from 01904 797217 or 01904 795621 at a cost of £5 which includes wine and canapés. Entry on other days is free and refreshments are available. There is free parking and wheelchair access.

The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

EMILY...

ON READING When I was younger, aside from the sunshine and the jingle of the ice cream van, one of the things that I was most excited about each summer was the annual reading challenge held at the local library. The challenge is simple and exciting: read six books over the six week break and be rewarded with a medal when you returned back to school in September. You would be beaming with pride as the medal was presented to you in assembly in front of your friends. It doesn’t matter when you read your books, all at once or in a slow and steady manner over the six weeks, the only condition is that all six books are read before school begins in September. Being someone who has always tended to throw myself into things from the start, my mother and I had many arguments over how many books I could take out of the library. I wanted to take out all six at once but she wanted me to pace myself with one a week. Inevitably (and looking back, thankfully) my mum won which resulted in summers full of reading, ranging from Roald Dahl when I was little, to my favourites the Harry Potter and Narnia series as I grew older. These fond memories of participating in the challenge when I was younger sparked my interest in volunteering to help with the challenge in the past two summers. It has been heart-warming to see children still enthusiastically reading their books and eager to move onto the next one despite our age of electronic games and films. It’s not just the act of reading that makes the challenge something that I consider important (there are worlds that live in books that simply aren’t accessible through screens) but also the atmosphere that comes with it. With activities such as crafts, story-telling and treasure hunts, the summer reading challenge offers the opportunity to engage with something that is truly rewarding. A love of reading? It lasts for life. Emily 26 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

#WHATISDOTPEEN? By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637

N

orth Yorkshire Police have recently purchased three new property marking kits that will be in use across the City of York. These machines are called Dotpeen machines and work in a similar way to an engraving or tattoo machine. A permanent mark will be made on your property, usually your house number and postcode although we can mark any other words or numbers you would like. The machine is attached to a small computer and there are a number of pre programmed settings that we will use. These change the size of the marking and the depth of the mark. This is necessary so that damage is not caused to any property and it is obvious that a delicate mobile phone will want a smaller mark than a large cycle.

The main aim of marking all this property is to prevent crime, and to make it easier to reunite any stolen items with their rightful owner. We can mark almost any item that you will have in your household. Smooth surfaces work best and it has

WHO’S GETTING YOUR MONEY – YOUR FAMILY OR THE GOVERNMENT? Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

they have the gall to take another 40% off you when you die.

R

egular readers of my ramblings will know that I consider a big part of my job as a financial planner is to protect my clients’ money from hostile attack. I am, admittedly, very vocal about it. And that sometimes causes a bit of a row with those people who don’t agree with me. The general argument goes something like this: Tax is just the price we have to pay to live in a civilised country. I agree. No really, I do. But I also have a couple of issues with this general principle. One - just how many bites of the cherry does the tax man actually want? We pay income tax on earnings, capital gains tax on gains, corporation tax on company profits, VAT at 20% - 20%!! – on everyday stuff we buy. We pay stamp duty, insurance tax, air passenger duty, car tax, council tax, national insurance. On and on. Not to mention the latest raid on pensions dressed up as “pensions freedom”. And then, to cap it all,

But my other gripe is just how incompetent the government-of-the-day is. From overspending on abandoned projects – like the disastrous attempt to computerise the NHS (£12 billion gone so far) – to fabricated MP’s expenses, it’s estimated that the total wasted on this nonsense comes to £82 billion. Think about that for a moment. This is your money we’re talking about here. As P J O’Rourke said “to give money and power to government is like giving whiskey and car keys to teenage boys.” I estimate me and my team have saved at least £25 million of family money that would otherwise have gone down the tax pan and been wasted on the plethora of nonsensical schemes the powers-that-be dream up. Given the choice, wouldn’t you rather your money went to help your children get on the housing ladder, or pay for your grandchildrens’ education? Or even the donkey sanctuary? At least you get to decide. That’s why I make no apologies for my commitment to increase my clients’ (and their family’s) wealth, and protect it from the greedy bankers, crazy Governments, desperate authorities and other legalised robbers who are relentlessly attempting to take it off them.

IS THIS THE ULTIMATE THUNDERBIRDS FAN TRIBUTE?

A

Thunderbirds fan has created an amazing tribute to 50 years of the iconic show by producing the World’s biggest ever Thunderbird 2, carved into an 15 acre field of growing maize plants near York, England. Measuring over 350m (1150ft) long, Thunderbird 2 has been painstakingly carved out of over 1 million living maize plants. It took Tom Pearcy and his team of helpers nearly a week to cut out the 6km of pathways in his 15 acre field near York to form the giant Thunderbird image together with the words ‘Thunderbirds Are 50’. The pathways in the field form an intricate maze for visitors to explore. The York Maze is believed to be the largest maze in Europe and one of the largest in the world. Jamie Anderson, son of Thunderbirds creator the late Gerry Anderson, was so impressed when he heard about Mr Pearcy’s amazing maze that he had to come to York to see it for himself. Jamie took a helicopter flight over the giant 15 acre maize maze to see the design.

(new for 2015)

(new for 2015)

Says Jamie Anderson, “It’s incredible, this really is an amazing tribute to 50 years of Thunderbirds. I’m sure my father would have been thrilled to see this and he would have been particularly interested in the design process and how it has been carved into the field in such impressive detail.” The Thunderbirds 50th tribute York Maze is open for visitors to explore this summer from Saturday 11 July to Monday 7th September, when the maize will be harvested and fed to the cows. CELEBRATING 100 YEARS WITH YOUR LOCAL WI T he Women’s Institute (WI) was formed in 1915 to revitalise rural communities and encourage women to become more involved in producing food during the First World War.

Since 1915 the organisation’s aims have broadened and the WI is now the largest voluntary women’s organisation in the UK with over 212,000 members in 6,600 WIs. The WI plays a unique role in providing women with educational opportunities and the chance to build new skills, to take part in a wide variety of activities and to campaign on issues that matter to them and their communities. Members have campaigned to empower and support women within society, exerting their individual and collective influence and bringing many controversial issues to the fore often resulting in changes to legislation and government policies. Members are at the heart of the WI and they play a central role in bringing issues onto the WI’s national agenda. From equal pay to climate change, from gaps in the midwifery workforce to the plight of the honey bee, members have embraced a diverse set of 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

challenges and built a reputation as a practical and ambitious organisation that doesn’t shy away from tricky issues. The first WI meeting in the UK was held in Llanfairpwll on Anglesey, Wales, on 16 September 1915. Whilst the meeting venues might have changed over the years from the local village hall to local cafés, pubs etc the ethos and reputation of the WI remains the same, and women join now to meet new friends, learn new skills and make a difference on matters that are important to them just as fellow members did in 1915.

Saturday 3 October The Galtres Group of eleven WI’s is holding an exhibition at the Galtres Centre in Easingwold between 10.15am – 4pm. Ten WI’s will each demonstrate a decade showing important events nationally, locally and within the WI. Easingwold School will complete the cycle looking at the future. Free entry. Refreshments available. 3-6 September WI Centennial Fair at the Harrogate International Centre. Open to members and nonmembers alike. The fair offers four fantastic days of craft, food, travel and lifestyle. Saturday 12 September Wigginton & Haxby WI will be hosting a Community Tea Party in the Memorial Hall, Haxby between 2pm and 4pm. The community, family and friends are invited to join in the celebration with tea, homemade cakes and displays depicting our amazing history. Children from Wigginton & Haxby primary schools have been invited to take part in a baking and craft competition. Top Tips from a dental professional

EVERYONE NEEDS A DENTAL INSPECTION. If your older and have lost most or all of your teeth you may feel by Christine Parker that you would not benefit BDS (GDC 72136) from a dental examination. As dentists we do not just look at your teeth we look at your whole mouth as it reflects your general health, recent evidence shows that poor oral health can contribute to disease elsewhere in the body. One of the main reasons for patients with no teeth to visit their dentist is to ensure they have no suspicious lesions in their mouth. Oral cancer in particular can be present but unnoticed by the patient until it is too late. Your dentist will carefully check the oral cavity and the entrance to the throat for any abnormalities and refer you should they discover anything they are not happy with. The fit and wear of your dentures changes over a period of time, your dentist can assess these and recommend relining or remaking the denture before it cracks in two or starts to fall out of your mouth. The supporting teeth for your denture are incredibly important they allow the denture to be braced, if they are not regularly attended to by a professional they may well loosen and compromise the fit of the denture. Medication can have serious affects in the mouth from causing the gums to swell and make brushing more difficult leading to gum disease, to oral dryness which can cause rapid decay of the remaining teeth. of teeth before Being able to chew properly An example and after treatment and feeling confident about our appearance matters to every age group so don’t feel you are beyond the need for care or that it doesn’t matter. The photos show the work we did for a patient in their 90’s which restored their confidence to be socially active again.

THE BUDGET GOOD NEWS OR BAD NEWS?

T

he Chancellor has set out a budget intended for the “working people”, but what does that mean for the small business owner?

Phil Kitchen is a Chartered Accountant and director at PCLG, Chartered Accountants, one of York’s longest established firms of Accountants

the £1000s. The increased tax bill outweighs the tax saving from the reduced corporation tax rates. This will certainly make trading as a limited company less lucrative.

Employment Allowance

Living Wage

With a gradual increase in the minimum wage for over 25’s, from the current £6.50 to £9 per hour by 2020, this is a great social move in terms of setting a pay level which reflects the real cost of living. However, this may not be good news for businesses where often the main cost to them is that of employment. It may discourage smaller business from employing people or from setting up at all. It could also force businesses to increase their prices.

Corporation Tax Cuts

Good news for all limited company businesses is the reduction in the rate of corporation tax to 19% in 2017 and 18% in 2020. This should encourage businesses to grow and make Britain more attractive.

Dividend Tax Changes

A tax free allowance of £5,000 for dividend income is good news for the small time investor, but bad news for director/shareholders who take the bulk of their income as dividends. Simply put, dividends over £5,000 will attract 7.5% tax for basic rate tax payers, and 32.5% tax for higher rate tax payers. Those who have historically taken smaller salaries and dividend income below the higher rates of tax, from April 2016, will be pushed into paying a tax bill, which could be in

The increase in the Employment Allowance to £3,000 off an employer’s National Insurance bill is good news for those who employ staff, but bad news for companies where the only employee is the director. From April 2016, the Employment Allowance will no longer be available to these types of businesses.

Annual Investment Allowance

It was announced that the amounts qualifying for tax relief on the purchase of plant and equipment is to be £200,000, which is better than the £25,000 which was due to come into force. This should encourage business to make capital expenditure.

Landlords

Bad news for landlords, as from April 2017, interest on buy to let mortgages will only be given at the basic rate of tax. This could more than half the amount of tax relief available to landlords paying the higher rates of tax.

Overall……

A mixed bag – with small owner managed businesses seeming to take the brunt of the changes. The cuts in corporation tax certainly don’t make up for the loss of the Employment Allowance and increases in personal income tax bill of those taking income as dividends.

MALTON - A CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE IN RACING Contributed by one of the many knowledgeable equine clients of Station House Vets In the 20th century, Miles Henry Easterby, who is always known as Peter, became the country’s leading trainer of jumping horses, winning nearly every big race, including the Cheltenham Gold Cup twice and the Champion Hurdle on five occasions from his farm at Great Habton, a village a few miles west of the town.

For more than two centuries Malton has been a major centre for the training of racehorses. Its main attractions are its gallops for, in the same way that major breweries are based near suitable water sources, training centres have sprung up where there are top-class facilities for the conditioning of racehorses. Most trainers in Malton use the Langton Wold gallops, 100 acres of permanent downland a couple of miles south of the town. They are in fact just outside the town of Norton, and though we regularly read about ‘Malton’ trainers, the majority of racing stables are actually situated in Norton. Newmarket, Lambourn and the Yorkshire Dales village Middleham are the other three principal British training centres and Malton’s owes much of its reputation for being a top racing town to a guy called John Scott, who came to Norton back in the 19th century. He bought Whitewall stables in 1825 and he eventually built up a team of 100 horses, which

was a huge string on those days. Eventually known as the Wizard Of The North, he won nearly every big Flat race, most notably 41 classic races including Britain’s biggest and best-known event, the Epsom Derby, six times. One of his Derby winners was West Australian, who in 1841 created history by become the first horse to win the British Triple Crown, three classic races, the 2,000 Guineas over a mile at Newmarket in the spring, the Derby which is over a mile and a half in June and Yorkshire’s own classic, the St Leger which is run over a mile and three-quarters at Doncaster every September. The record-breaking Scott won the St Leger an amazing 16 times. Another Malton-trained horse to win the Derby in the 19th century was the filly Blink Bonny, who became only the second filly ever to win the race and she also completed a remarkable double by winning the Oaks in the same year. She was owned, trained and was bred by William I’Anson who lived at Spring Cottage stables, Norton, now the base of Brian Ellison.

Another leading trainer of jumpers in the same era was Jimmy FitzGerald, who came across from Ireland to Britain with just five pounds in his pocket, and ended up as leading jockey over jumps. He was forced to retire from riding after fracturing his skull but began training and from Norton Grange stables had more than 1,200 winners including the 1985 Cheltenham Gold Cup with Forgive’N Forget. One race to elude both Easterby and FitzGerald was the Grand National though Bill Dutton, who trained at Grove Cottage Stables in Norton in the 1950’s and won the Cheltenham Gold Cup with Limber Hill, rode the 100-1 shot Tipperary Tim to win the race in 1928, but only after all of his 41 rivals had fallen. Former jump jockeys Richard Fahey, Brian Ellison and John Quinn, together with Peter Easterby’s son Tim, are the town’s flag bearers these days, and though Easterby is the only one of the four to have won a classic race, Bollin Eric in the 2002 St Leger, all regularly send horses to compete at the highest level against in most of the country’s biggest races, both on the Flat and over jumps, and ensure that Malton remains one of Britain’s major centres of excellence in the training of racehorses.

GILBERT & SULLIVAN’S

THE SORCERER

The course of love is never smooth, especially when enchantment is at work.

Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company return to The Joseph Rowntree Theatre in September, as they present The Sorcerer, which was Gilbert and Sullivan’s first full-length work. Love levels all ranks, or so we are told, but in a 1915 village sometimes a little assistance is required. Enter a sorcerer with a love potion and soon that world is turned on its head. Alexis, heir to the great Sir Marmaduke Pointdextre, is to marry Aline Sangazure, who can trace her lineage back to Helen of Troy. Not content with that, Alexis wishes to pursue his belief that people should not be separated by rank when it comes to marriage and he has a plan to make the whole village happy.

He has engaged John Wellington Wells, a Sorcerer, to secretly administer a love potion, which will send all who drink it to sleep and, when they wake, will cause them to fall madly in love with the first person of the opposite sex they see, who has also drunk the potion. What could possibly go wrong? Performances run from Thursday, 17 September to Saturday 19 September, starting at 7.30pm each evening, plus a Saturday Matinee at 2.30pm. Tickets are priced at £12 (Adults); £10 (Concessions), with under 16s free, and are available from York Theatre Royal Box Office (01904 623568 or www.yorktheatreroyal.co.uk) or by email to: tickets@jorvikgsc.org.uk

MOTORING

Honda Civic Type R By Wayne Gorrett Following a lengthy hiatus, Honda has launched the most eagerly-awaited performance car so far this year.

structure. Start to use the performance and the engine adopts a monotonous, booming drone that is neither pleasant nor inspiring.

Faithful disciples of Honda’s iconic Red Badge models, number in their hundreds of thousands around the world - 400 of whom have already placed advance orders, largely sight unseen.

If you’re given an opportunity to take one of these onto the track – grasp it with both hands. You’ll discover a car that’s exceptionally racy but also very manageable. Steering is weighty but precise, with none of the expected twitchiness.

THE STYLE FACTORY The new Civic Type R is gloriously shouty, has a big mouth and an XXL rear wing tuned for maximum downforce. Other aesthetics include double dual exhausts either side of a massive rear splitter, a big front splitter, flared wheel arches and the vents that adorn them. THE INSIDE STORY The front furniture is fabulous - probably the best road car seats I’ve sat in for a while. Other tactile elements are great too – an aluminium gear lever, shapely leather steering wheel and well-judged pedal weights. ENGINES AND TRANSMISSIONS The new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder Earth Dreams i-VTEC turbo unit produces 228 kW at 6,500 rpm and 400 Nm of torque from a lowly 2,500 rpm. It still uses the VTEC variable valve timing system, however. All of that brutal power is received by the front wheels via a six-speed manual gearbox only and a helical limited-slip differential. Honda claims 0-100kph in 5.7 seconds and 269kph flat out. The front suspension now uses a strut arrangement with a bespoke ‘dualaxis’ design to reduce centre offset, reducing torque steer by an incredible 55 per cent. The Type R brakes are no-nonsense Brembo units and both performed exceptionally well on road and track. To the left of the grippy steering wheel is a button marked +R. This sports setting immediately changes all the dials in the car to fiery red. The result is a change in engine mapping for sharper performance and steering, stability assist to maximise grip, while adaptive damping is increased by a spine-shrinking 30 per cent. THE DRIVE On public roads, throwing the Type-R into sweeping corners inspires confidence as every judder of grip is fed back into the wheel. Those adaptive dampers ensure that smaller bumps are shrugged off with an ease that defies the very low-profile tyres, although potholes and crusty surfaces still crash through the 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Two versions are available – a standard model at £29,995 and a GT with additional equipment at £32,295. By way of comparison, the Golf R costs £30,820. SUMMARY The new Honda Civic Type R is an extreme car and has been well worth the wait. Its target buyer will be someone who doesn’t welcome compromise – and who sports deep enough pockets to live with that decision. While unquestionably pricey, it is an utterly brilliant piece of automotive engineering.

TRAVEL

By Solange Hando

Bhutan - Taktsang, the Tiger’s Lair fresh and Buddhist flags flutter in the breeze to send prayers in all directions.

L

ong ago, they say, a holy man named Guru Rinpoche flew from the East on the back of a tigress to bring Buddhism to Bhutan. He landed high above the Paro valley on a vertiginous ledge where hermits soon followed to meditate in the caves. Taktsang, ‘the Tiger’s Lair’ is the most sacred place in this small Himalayan kingdom, claiming myriad shrines on the slopes and a monastery built on the very ledge where the Guru landed. Damaged by fire in the late 90s, Bhutan’s most iconic landmark was restored by the finest artists and welcomes visitors, pilgrims and monks who might choose to meditate for up to seven years in the most remote building. Glinting in sunlight or draped in shifting mist, Taktsang defies imagination, seemingly inaccessible as it clings precariously to the cliff face, hanging some 800 metres

above the valley floor. Yet, it can be reached on a scenic three hour trek, starting in a riverside meadow garlanded in prayer flags. Soon the trail enters a forest of blue pines, rhododendrons and oak where wild primula and orchids line the path and lichen hangs from the trees like ghostly cobwebs. Sometimes you come across a makeshift stall with a colourful display of turquoise and coral beads, gleaming among human skulls polished for ritual offerings. A child beckons, a woman smiles but all is quiet except for bird song and the occasional tinkling of bells as ponies carry the less able to the half way point. Up there, by a log cabin framed in marigolds, Taktsang appears even more out of reach across a fathomless ravine, but there are great views of the valley with its golden paddies, meandering river and traditional houses festooned in auspicious signs and beautifully carved eaves. At nearly 3000 metres, the air is

Beyond the cabin, the path climbs relentlessly above the tree line, past holy rocks and glistening shrines, mysterious footprints, gurgling springs and rows of tiny urns containing ashes of the dead, placed here to ensure a peaceful after-life. Just like the altitude, the scenery takes your breath away, from the mountain tops drifting in and out of the mist to the forest tumbling down to the valley in every shade of green. One final bend and you are faced by hundreds of steps staggering down to a wooden bridge to cross a sacred waterfall, then it’s up on the other side to the entrance gate, at last. Now, vertigo might strike at any moment for there is little room on the ledge where white walls and red and gold pagoda roofs jostle for space right against the rock, on the very edge of the precipice. Narrow rickety bridges, steps and mini-terraces lead from one temple to the next, with yet more dizzying views of the Paro valley. Inside every temple are murals of gurus and gods, gilded statues and offerings of fruit, flowers and colourful butter sculptures. Pilgrims prostrate and peep into the Guru’s cave, open only once a year, and now and then the chanting of monks echoes in the semi-darkness, punctuated by cymbals and gongs. Oil lamps flicker and the fragrance of incense rises all around. It’s eerie, inspiring and worth every challenging step along the way.

BACK TO SCHOOL It doesn’t matter what your age, September always signifies back to school. We’ve picked out a selection of the best books about school and you’ll be straight back into the classroom before the bell has rung.

Looking for Alaska

John Green Fitting in at a new school is never easy, but Miles Halter’s life is transformed the day he starts at Culver Creek Boarding School and meets the eponymous Alaska Young. He’s a smitten kitten but she is more than just a little bit complicated. First comes love and then comes tragedy - and we’d expect nothing less from the author of the blockbusting ‘The Fault in Our Stars’, John Green.

Goodbye, Mr Chips

James Hilton Mr Chipping or ‘Mr Chips’ teaches classics at Brookfield School and is something of an institution.

Time does move Mr Chips on though, as he falls in love with the young and challenging Katherine and worries about the world that lies beyond Brookfield as times change and life continues.

I’d Tell You I Love You, but Then I’d Have to Kill You

Ally Carter The Gallagher Academy sets itself apart as being for ‘exceptional women’ and the high achievers among us. It’s actually a school for future spies! Cammie, one such highly-intelligent student, can’t escape the fact that she’s also just a girl who’s got a bit of

a crush on a boy. How does she go about concealing her identity from the one person she might be falling in love with? It could be a case of mission: impossible.

The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie

Muriel Spark Unconventional and unorthodox schoolmistress Miss Brodie nurtures the high-achieving ‘Brodie set’ and has a great influence over her girls, through her charm and her guile. Miss Jean Brodie has become an iconic literary figure and has been brought to life both on the stage and in film. It’s a back to school must.

GARDENING

Tropical Paradise By Pippa Greenwood

A tropical oasis might be particularly well suited to an urban garden, where temperatures are often warmer and conditions more sheltered and protected, but even if your garden gets its fair share of frosts you can still make an impact using a mixture of tender and hardy plants all of which have that exotic feel to them. Plant closely or fill ‘gaps’ with temporary plantings of the less hardy tropical look plants and you will create that dense, lush looks which spells tropical paradise.

A

s the summer’s end is not too far away, many of us will be wishing for that exotic holiday we never quite had. But you can recreate that Typically Tropical Feel in your own garden instead. The temperatures may not be quite what they might be on a real exotic holiday, but it’ll certainly help to make your garden feel warmer and more appealing, and you can be sure that it’ll last a lot longer than the classic two week long trip.

Transform your garden with Artificial Grass

Lush, large leaves will always help to create a rainforest or exotic atmosphere and you could even grow a miniature banana called Musa ‘Basjoo’, which shows a good degree of hardiness. Indian shot plants, also known as the cannas are great and fast growing too. For very bold, colourfully striped foliage and screaming orange flowers try Canna ‘Tropicana’, or for a larger than life effect try the banana Ensetes ventricosum ‘Maurelii’ which grows very fast and has wonderfully rich purple-green leaves.

>> If you want more than just foliage, the bulbous Eucomis bicolour has out-of-this world greenish yellow flowerheads which give it the common name of ‘pineapple plant’. Another favourite of mine is the Angel’s trumpet. These gorgeous looking plants may be very poisonous but the flowers of Brugmansia (previously known as Datura) as angel’s trumpet is also known, take some beating – choose white, yellow or cream and enjoy their perfume and elegant good looks. Although not hardy if you grow it in a pot it can be kept in the garden during all but the worst weather and then brought out again once it has started to warm up the following spring. Don’t forget the vertical surfaces such as trellis, walls and fences as they too can be given a floral and foliage makeover. These may look boring now, but will look great when covered with passion flowers, ornamental vines or the pretty Cobea scandens commonly known as the cup and saucer plant. Then add to the ‘action’ using a few dramatic features – perhaps a Trachycarpus fortunei palm in open ground or a pot, or in the form of a sculpture or statue. If you go to the garden centre, many statues and garden ornaments are much more affordable than you might think. Partially hidden with some lush foliage they help to add to the jungle-like atmosphere.

There are plenty of tropical-effect plants to choose from including: tree ferns, phoenix palms, yuccas, cordylines, Rodgersia pinnata, Gunnera manicata, Rheum palmatum, cycads, citrus (including lemons, calamondin orange and other fruiting varieties) and bamboos. So, you see, the potential is there to create a holiday paradise without having to leave home, brave delays at the airport, find a house or pet-sitter…..all you need now is a deck chair and a cocktail or two, delivered on a tray! Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood. com for Nemaslug & other biocontrols, Speed Hoes, Speed Weeders SoftTie, pop-up crop covers, copper tape and lots more besides.
