Postbridge

an ideal base for Dartmoor walks

Located right in the middle of Dartmoor , Postbridge is in the perfect location and setting to explore the Moor. With the East Dart River running through the middle of the village, the road bridge provides the perfect view of the largest complete Clapper Bridge on the moor, which draws thousands of visitors each year.

Postbridge is the ideal base for Dartmoor walks, with open Moorland and Bellever Forest both on the doorstep. Lydgate House Hotel set 500 metres from the Clapper Bridge and with views down to the River is the ideal place to base yourself for a visit to this area. And breathe…

Dear Annie

Friday - a few days away in Dartmouth for a weekend of peace and quiet, and just booked into Dart Marina - plan an hour of total bliss in the Spa! We dropped down the hill, got a glimpse of the River Dart in front of us - magical!

Work faded to the back of my mind. The views are amazing, we booked a treatment which did us a power of good before dinner and a blissful sleep. Must be the clean Devon air…

Saturday - walked out to Dartmouth Castle, climbed up to a place called Gallants Bower (bit steep but worth the climb) then caught a little blue water taxi back to the Hotel. Back on board a cruiser in the afternoon down River to Totnes wildlife all the way! The sound of a steam train followed us - for all the world like a scene from The Railway Children.

Sunday - chef Tom Woods is doing great things with his menus and there was enough local ingredients to satisfy me and my foibles. Devon has some great produce and we ate plenty of it - delicious!

The few days in Dartmouth has felt like a proper holiday and we can’t wait to come back - if you get a chance to grab a few days away, I know you’d love it.

Alfresco Restaurant of the Year 2012 TheVineyard Café, Sharpham

The Vineyard Café is a relaxed, rustic al fresco restaurant nestled high above the banks of the Dart Estuary on the gorgeous Sharpham Estate, with relaxing country views.

The Vineyard Café won Best Al Fresco Restaurant of the Year by the Good Food Guide in 2012. Owner Rosie Weston and her team cook up tempting meals to order from local, seasonal ingredients, including Brixham fish, local lamb, Oak Tree Gardens raspberries, and other fresh produce including salads and vegetables grown in the estate’s own walled garden.

The menu changes according to what’s available and in season. Expect simply prepared homemade dishes such as local crab, pork, pistachio & prune terrine, sweet potato, carrot & cumin tart, John Dory with slow cooked fennel and of course pea, mint & Sharpham cheese fritters the café’s signature dish.

A mouth-watering selection of cheeses are available, which are all made on-site from the rich, creamy milk of Sharpham’s own Jersey herd which graze the rich pastures

of the estate. Sharpham’s own delicious range of wines are produced in the estate’s vineyard and winery and are served to compliment each dish.

Rustic flower pots and jugs of fresh flowers adorn chunky wooden tables, one of which is carved out of a large tree from the estate.The staff are warm and friendly, high chairs are available, and the café is next to the winery for wine tours and tastings. There’s also a farm shop selling Sharpham wine and cheese as well as chutneys and other tasty local treats.

The café season opens on 1 May until the end of September and is open from 10am-5pm, 7 days a week. Lunch is served from 12-2pm on weekdays and 12-2:30pm at weekends. Booking for lunch is strongly recommended by phone only on 01803 732178, but you can also turn up after the busy lunchtime period for tea and homemade cakes.

The café only closes if the weather is really bad and there are blankets available if it gets chilly. Children, dogs on leads and muddy boots are all welcome.

Down by the Riverside The Maltsters Arms,Tuckenhay

The Maltsters Arms is a traditional riverside freehouse, restaurant and B&B with stunning views across Bow Creek. It is well worth navigating your way down the winding lanes to reach this very special place.

Steeped in history this 19th century pub is located in the picturesque hamlet of Tuckenhay, which was once a bustling port and is also known for being one of the first places in the world with mains gas lighting.

More recently,Tuckenhay and the Maltsters Arms became famous thanks to the flamboyant celebrity chef Keith Floyd running it for 8 years.

George and Alison took over the pub in the summer of 2011 having left the bright lights of London behind.

They have brought an unhindered enthusiasm to the pub; working closely with their live-in Manager Louise and husband and Head Chef Chris, they have created a strong and energetic team which has given the Maltsters a new lease of life.

Whether you come to the pub for a beer or a three course meal, you will not be disappointed. On offer is a great selection of local real ales, ciders and a splendid wine list. Head Chef Chris serves a fabulous and imaginative menu of fresh, local and seasonal ingredients.

Set in the rolling countryside near Dunkeswell, just 5 minutes drive from Honiton, Lakeview Manor has it all: peaceful walks around one of the four lakes which are full of carp, perch and tench or just sitting in the pristine gardens with its feature fountain sipping a glass of Chardonnay.

Accompany that with superb meals prepared by our Head Chef, Andrew Deam, in our charming restaurant overlooking the gardens and lake, mouth-watering dishes such as oven roasted cod wrapped in Parma ham, with a crayfish, lime and vermouth sauce followed by Devon clotted cream crème brulee with shortbread biscuit. The restaurant is open to residents and non-residents alike 7 days a week serving breakfast, lunch and dinner along with a superb Sunday carvery every week.

All our foods are sourced locally, are reasonably priced and served with a smile.

Finish the evening off and stay in one of our 17 comfortable hotel rooms, ranging from double/twin rooms to a family suite sleeping up to 7 people. Most of our rooms have recently been refurbished, some with a fantastic double power shower. Our Bridal Suite comprises a four poster bed with beautiful views over the front lake. The family rooms have a large living area with three bedrooms leading off the main room – all tastefully decorated. All rooms are reasonably priced from only £99.00 inclusive of bed and freshly prepared full English breakfast.

‘A Beautiful little hotel, bar and restaurant. Absolutely spotlessly clean and our room overlooking the front lake - with a four poster bed and very nice linen was wonderful.

Lovely thick towels and toiletries provided, as well as teas, coffee, chocolate and biscuits. Warm and extremely comfortable; true luxury. I tried to be a Hotel Inspector to find a very small fault - but couldn’t!

Food was superb; the chef is quite clearly a real chef and very talented. Breakfast was huge, as was the delicious evening meal, and everything was beautifully presented.’

Definite menu option will be spring new season lamb from “Farmer Phil”. Spring is great time of year for fruit , salads & vegetables, asparagus, peas, broad beans, wild garlic (ramsons) wild watercress all of which will make an appearance. I always try to find what is at its best and work the menus around that.

Describe The Normandy Arms and its location?

Blackawton is a lovely village in the hills of South Hams 5 miles from the coast. Friendly, secluded suntrap of a village with lovely views and great characterThere is always something happening. worm charming, boxing day cricket, Guy Fawkes fireworks display to name just a few.

Do you have a signature dish? Or what is your most popular dish?

Steaks cut from Blackawton beef. All our beef and lamb comes from “Farmer Phil Bond” of Collaton Farm. Steaks are cut to order and kept simple cooked with love and served with hand cut chunky chips triple cooked until perfectly crisp and fluffy, with a buttery and tangy Béarnaise sauce to dip them in. People love the fact that their steaks have only had to travel less than two miles to get to us.

We have a board with the steaks available and they get crossed off during the night as we run out all the regulars such as rib eye sirloin and fillet but also slightly less well known steaks like “bavette” or “onglet”

Where do you see The Normandy Arms in three to five years?

We would like to see the Normandy Arms as “the place to go” for a good meal in an atmosphere that draws people back time and again.

What makes The Normandy Arms such a special place to Dine?

Everything we serve is made here at the Normandy Arms, porkpies, ice creams, chutneys, bread, gnocchi, pasta, desserts., cured & smoked meats and fish, all using highest quality produce as locally sourced as possible. Dishes are kept relatively simple to allow the produce to shine.
