Helpful Holidays wins Silver at British Travel Awards

West Country cottage specialist, Helpful Holidays, has scooped second place and a Silver Award against strong national competition at the British Travel Awards in the Best UK cottage/self catering booking company (UK properties) category.

The British Travel Awards are acknowledged as the most definitive and largest monitor of public opinion on the performance of travel and tourism providers. Shortlisted companies are nominated by travel industry professionals, but it is the leisure holidaymakers whose votes finally determine the winners. The results were announced at a glittering ceremony on Wednesday 2nd November at the Battersea Evolution in Battersea Park, London.

Delighted with the unexpected accolade, Helpful Holidays’ General Manager, Moray Bowater, said, “We’re honoured to have been nominated for this prestigious award and immensely grateful to all those who took the trouble to vote for us. Helpful Holidays has always stood for reliable, un-hyped and outstanding service to its customers. This award recognises that in the best possible way – via the votes of those we serve and those who know us.

“There's a famous quotation about 'fooling all of the people some of the time' and 'some of the people all of the time', but less famous and less quoted is the prelude to that: 'If you once forfeit the confidence of your fellow citizens, you can never regain their respect and esteem'.The bit about 'fooling' followed. Lincoln knew that 'fooling' would, probably, ultimately lead to a loss of trust - and then you'd be finished. “We live in an age where that lesson is sometimes forgotten and where the evasions and deceptions of those we would hope to trust fill the media, draining our confidence and bolstering our cynicism - how exhausting! Ultimately, trust is the currency that really counts and we're happy that earning that of our customers through our straightforward and frank approach has been the touchstone of our business since we started 30 years ago.

“We believe that success and profit are the by-products of delivering outstanding service. The credit for doing the difficult job of always trying to deliver service beyond our customers’ expectations goes to every one of our team advocates for our holidaymakers and confidants for our homeowners”, concluded Moray. Oscars of the Travel Industry

The British Travel Awards are widely considered to be the ‘Oscars’ of the travel industry. BTA’s Chief Executive, Lorraine Barnes Burton, said, “It’s the largest awards programme in the UK, created to reward travel companies, and the winning accolade is the benchmark for excellence when it comes to finding out who really is the best in the business of travel for the UK consumer.”

To view Helpful Holidays’ portfolio of over 600 places to stay sleeping two to 48 guests in Devon, Cornwall, Somerset and Dorset, visit or call 01647 434316 for a free brochure. More details about the British Travel Awards can be found at www.britishtravel

Is the

Dart Estuary

the most beautiful in the UK?

There is no better place to explore the lovely Dart estuary than from Fingals Hotel.

Set in a secluded valley just back from Dittisham Creek it is an oasis in itself although guests rarely miss the opportunity of venturing out onto the banks of the Dart. From Fingals guests enjoy a gentle stroll into the beautiful, riverside village of Dittisham, originally a home to fishermen with their tiny, colourful cottages lining the Quay, this is still a thriving village with The Ferry Boat Inn and The Anchor Stone Café overlooking the water and serving excellent local ales and food. Ringing a big brass bell at the end of the pontoon summons a ferry to take them over to Greenway and Agatha Christie’s summer home now owned by the NationalTrust and well worth a visit. From here they can turn south and enjoy stunning vistas of the estuary opening up while walking down to Kingswear – another beautiful National Trust property, Coleton Fishacre, built by the D’Oyly Carte family now beautifully restored and re-furnished is not far away. A short ferry ride to Dartmouth on the opposite bank presents a superb view of this historic town, and the hike back up the western side past the magnificent Britania Royal Naval College completes a part of the beautiful DartValley Trail. However, if energy levels are flagging the Dartmouth-Dittisham Ferry is a glorious alternative for the final leg.

If ferry rides seem too tame there are sailing boats, dinghies, canoes, paddle boards or launches to hire. Sometimes guests can borrow the Fingals rowing boat or go in their launch (or even help paddle a 12 seater canoe) in order to visit welcoming hostelries at Tuckenhay or Totnes (taking note not to get caught on a mud bank on a falling tide!). Sharpham Vineyard and Café is another favourite as this involves tasting wines and cheeses produced right here on the luxuriant banks of the River Dart. Fingals is surrounded by all this beauty and offers a haven from the modern, chaotic world.

Ask the Chef Horn of Plenty, Gulworthy,Tavistock

At Handpicked in Devon we have heard great things about the dining experience at the Horn of Plenty so thought we would find out more… Name of Head Chef: Scott Paton

When did you decide to become a chef and where did you train? My first experience of cooking was when I was 5, we had a French breakfast day in school where we made baguettes and hot chocolate. I have always loved cooking and as a kid I often made my family smile with my “strange concoctions”. I trained at The Jack in the Green, initially washing dishes. It was my first job in the industry and I soon got stuck in. I worked with Mat Mason and Paul Parnell for 9 years, so they have obviously had a massive influence on my career. I was initially inspired to be a Chef by the adrenaline of a busy service, by the creativity and the buzz. I guess that’s still the case today, but it’s the combination of creativity and discipline which drives me. That, and the fact that you’re always learning, you never stand still. The thing I like least is having a quiet restaurant. I hate being bored! Have you won any awards? I’ve won some great accolades that I’m really proud of. In 2008 I won ‘dessert of the year’ from the Association of Pastry Chefs, and in 2009 I won South West Chef of theYear in the young professional class.

What style of food can guest expect at The Horn of Plenty? I wouldn’t say my food has a specific style, it’s not British, not French. My food is simply the food of Scott Paton at The Horn of Plenty. My food and my menus have been designed around the region, the location and the clientele.

Do you have a Signature Dish? I wouldn’t say I had a signature dish as such either. My food is always changing and moving with the times. I don’t want to be cooking the same things now as in 5 years time. Right now some of my favourite dishes include Roasted venison with chicory jam, and milk chocolate mousse with banana & passion fruit parfait.

Who has influenced or inspired you? There have been a couple of chefs who have really influenced me. Pierre Herme is a fabulous pastry chef who I was fortunate enough to work with for a couple of days. He’s known as the Picasso of Pastry, he’s the guy who brought pastry bang up to date. I’ve also been hugely impressed by Tom Kerridge at The Hand and Flowers in Marlow. For me, he’s re-written the fine dining rule book. He’s just been awarded 2 Michelin stars, but

Page 16

there’s no white linen in the restaurant, no smartly uniformed staff, just quirkly little pub with wonky tables and a fantastic atmosphere, but he’s managed to capture the essence of his pub in his food. I think creativity is hugely important, but I’m never creative when I’m busy. I find I have my best ideas when I’m relaxing, often when I’m asleep. I often dream about what food should look like, then match flavours to suit. That’s kind of against the rule – most Chefs start out with the flavours, then focus on making the dish look good. Having said that, here atThe Horn we’re not about whacky food or clever food. We’re about taking the traditional and bringing it bang up to date with a touch of “wow”! We hear you have your own kitchen garden, how is that going? We have big plans for our kitchen garden. We’ve seen our first butternut squashes this year and we’re just starting to redevelop the garden more seriously. Next year, we’ll have our own beetroot, carrots, courgettes, onions, Jerusalem artichokes, asparagus, peas, beans, salad leaves and berries. We’re not going to be self sufficient, but it’s the start of an exciting journey.

What has been the highlight of your career so far and what are the plans going forward? The highlight of my career so far has to be taking the reins here at The Horn. Damien and Julie have presented me with a fantastic opportunity. I want The Horn to be back up there with the big boys in the South West. The Horn has such a rich food history which goes back over 40 years. Over the next 5 years, we want to see The Horn regain the Michelin Star it deserves. We also want to become one of the Top 100 Restaurants in the UK, with a reputation for everything from canapés to mains to afternoon teas: we want to get everything as close to perfection as we can. The long term ambition is to achieve what Michael Caines has done at Gidleigh – taken a superb reputation, and driven it on to a whole new level. But we’ll do that in a way that’s true to The Horn: outstanding food served in a relaxed, informal environment, with a focus on warm, friendly, attentive service and wonderful views. The Horn of Plenty is highly recommended by Handpicked in Devon, call 01822 832528 or visit their website at

Your Place in the Country by Helen Tilliott at Garfield House

Garfield House is a unique country house retreat offering luxury ensuite accommodation and gourmet meals, all delivered with panache and a personal touch. With wonderful views, rambling gardens and easy access to Dartmoor this is a spectacular place to stay, relax or learn. We also offer a range of activities, workshops and courses to both residents and visitors

The South Hams of Devon has so much to offer: with Dartmoor to the North - very much in the press recently thanks to Steven Speilberg’s film War Horse, and with the beaches and pretty coastal towns of Salcombe and Dartmouth to the South. The breadth of stunning scenery and amenities is endless. Whether you are looking for a seaside holiday with the children or a more adventurous activity holiday, Devon has it covered.

We are also lucky to have so many excellent restaurants and pubs serving very good. I would highly recommend The Millbrook Inn at South Pool. The food there is excellent and the bar well stocked with good local beers and wines. Be aware though, that this pub is on the estuary and gets very busy at high tide it’s worth checking out the tide time tables!

Another good day trip out is to Beesands to the beautifully renovated Cricket Inn, good fish on the menu here, in fact on a summers day you can eat out on the sea wall watching the small fishing boats bobbing on the water and the catch being hauled on to the beach. Since I moved to here 13 years ago Devon now can boast so many really good food establishments. There is some notable shopping to do in South Devon for those with taste and individuality. The town of Ashburton is a Mecca for foodies, and for lovers of antiques and vintage bric-a-brac.The fish deli is a prime example and let’s face it if you are in Devon you must try the local fish. If you are looking for trendy clothing and art then head to Salcombe - Amelia’s Attic is a must.

There are many bonuses to this slower pace of life, in particular the warm welcome and generosity that is shown to all who visit. However if you are shopping even in a local chain supermarket expect them to finish a conversation before they serve you. Everyone knows everybody else and as a rule not only what you do but what you are going to do next. A TV celebrity and former pop star who stayed at Garfield House in the summer loved the whole idea that even in a supermarket the assistant advised her that “Sparkling wine is much cheaper than Champagne and you can’t really taste the difference”. And then promptly ID’d her for, as she pointed out,“I don’t know you from Adam!” our celeb was thrilled - it was her 30th Birthday last year! There are however more and more of us that have left London behind and thanks to the internet can live in Devon and work. Come visit and enjoy I can assure you on the way home you will still be contemplating whether you could live and work in this beautiful piece of England.

Garfield House - “Your Place in the Country” a unique place to stay, offering excellent food, fine wines and many activities. We are on the edge of Dartmoor and just off the A38 Expressway. See us on the Handpicked in Devon website Page 22

Kingfishers are frequently sighted by those taking a quiet stroll along the river path whilst heading to the pub. Stunning scenery comprising of Staverton Church, charming staggered cottage roofs with terracotta chimneys gently trickling smoke provides somewhat of an ideal setting for a peaceful and relaxing meal at the Sea Trout Inn.
