What is the International Language Programme?

At Handcross Park we offer an International Language Programme for Year 6. This is a tailor-made cross-curricular course that is specific to your child’s level in English, Maths and all academic and non-academic subjects. The course consists of intensive English lessons throughout the year, which aims to provide the level of English they will need to achieve well in assessment for prestigious senior schools. At the end of the year, they integrate successfully into mainstream classes in Year 7, whilst they embark on the Common Entrance programme.

The programme covers the four key skills of speaking, listening, reading and writing. It involves close study of grammar and vocabulary, including the specialised vocabulary required by the broad range of subjects they will study in Year 7.

Pupils of all ages achieve high academic standards and the school meets its aim of promoting a tradition of academic excellence

Pupils are also encouraged to read widely outside the classroom. In addition to English, pupils are taught Maths, History, Geography and Science together as a small group, whilst joining the rest of their year-group for nonacademic subjects such as Sport, Computer Studies and The Arts. Timetables are changeable throughout the year to respond to each child’s, interests, needs and development.

At Handcross, the International Language Programme provides the opportunity to give intensive small group and one-to-one lessons with highly experienced teachers, who create a bespoke learning journey for each child. The main focus of the group is to achieve excellent academic progress in all subjects and gain entrance to some of the best British schools.

Alongside this opportunity, pupils will have the full boarding school experience, mixing with pupils from all over the world. Boarding at Handcross Park is ‘home from home’, they become part of our extended family and their voice is of utmost importance to us.

The Boarding House has a real sense of community. Children are supported both emotionally and educationally by staff who really get to know them. Meal times are an important part of daily life and after supper, boarders benefit from academic support during supervised prep sessions followed by a full programme of activities, carefully balanced with time to relax. Exciting weekend activities and trips give our boarders the opportunity to visit places such as; The Tower of London, Greenwich, Stonehenge, The South Downs Planetarium, Thorpe Park, Windsor Castle and Oxford. More local outings include trips to the cinema, bowling, days at the beach and shopping in Brighton.

Pupils develop a strong moral compass. They mix well and are mutually very supportive within the school’s strong boarding community and family ethos.
