NEW Zealand

If we really look back, we can trace the New Zealand wine industry back to the planting of the first grapes by Samuel Marsden in 1819 and our first official wine maker as James Busby in the 1830’s.

A lot has changed since then and of course from prohibition in some areas to wine not able to be sold in restaurants from 1917, we often say that the wine industry really only started flourishing until the 1960’s.

During the swinging sixties we saw the modern-day evolution of the wine industry with wine being exported however during this time was more focused on Sherry and Fortified Wine.

It wasn’t until the 1980’s that we really saw what we know and love today come to fruition with Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Noir and Chardonnay being planted. The most famous wine regions until the 1960s were based all around Auckland, however over the next 20-30 years it’s where we saw the expansion to Gisborne and Hawke’s Bay and later in Marlborough, Wairarapa and Central Otago- now the world’s southern-most Vine-growing regions. The wine industry has expanded, where open pasture used to lay next to farming, this has now transcended to growing grapes.

Akarua

CENTRAL OTAGO

In October 2022, Edmond de Rothschild Heritage acquired 34.5 hectares of vineyards from Akarua in Central Otago, an important addition to their range. The vineyard was chosen for its unique terroir, ideal for producing fine pinot noirs. The name ‘Akarua’ in Māori represents the two grape varieties planted on the estate: Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, with a small amount of Pinot Gris and Riesling. Edmond de Rothschild Heritage aims to optimize Akarua’s potential, creating exceptional pinot noir, elegant wines, and becoming a benchmark in the New Zealand and international markets.

Brookfields

HAWKE’S BAY

Brookfields Vineyards, founded in 1937, is Hawke’s Bay’s oldest boutique winery. Under the ownership of Peter Robertson since 1977, it has become a top producer of premium wines in New Zealand. Brookfield’s prioritizes quality over volume expansion, aiming to create even more exceptional wines.

In 1990, alongside his wife Catherine, he founded Allan Scott Wines, one of Marlborough’s first independent wineries. What started as a passion project has grown into a true family affair. Today, their children, Josh and Sara, lead the charge, ensuring that the Scott name remains synonymous with quality winemaking. Whether you’re sipping a glass at their welcoming cellar door or enjoying a bottle from afar, Allan Scott Wines embodies the spirit of Marlborough—bold, innovative, and undeniably delicious.

She left her corporate winemaking career to have the freedom to make wines her way. Each wine is a unique batch made with care, so savor it while it lasts because once it’s gone, it’s truly gone.

ON THE QUIET

The OTQ (On The Quiet) wines began with a hidden parcel of Sauvignon Blanc, quietly tucked away in the cellar by Jules—so secret even her husband George didn’t know until the last moment.

matawhero

GISBORNE

The Matawhero journey started with two New Zealand wine pioneers from the 1960s, the late Bill and Denis Irwin. Today, the story continues around the drive and determination of Kirsten and Richard Searle, who purchased the Matawhero vineyard and winery in Gisborne Tairawhiti from Denis in 2008. Their love of the Gisborne region runs deep, Richard grew up locally and with a family history of growing grapes they would not want to be doing anything else. They are now the trusted Kaitiaki (guardians) of Matawhero and continue to develop the iconic winery and share the distinctive wine styles our beautiful region can produce. They craft famous New Zealand Chardonnays and many other varieties like Gewürztraminer, Chenin Blanc and of course some fruit-driven Reds. Our vines are the first in the world to greet the new day. Good spring rainfall and long dry summers, combined with both alluvial and heavier clay soils, allow us to 100% dry farm our vineyards. Growing grapes with natural rainfall created our distinctive fruit-driven wines with weight and intensity.

the irwin chardonnay

The Irwin Chardonnay is the flagship wine of Matawhero, crafted as a tribute to the winery’s founders, Bill and Denis Irwin, who were instrumental in pioneering modern viticulture in New Zealand. Produced only in exceptional vintages, this limited-release Chardonnay is made from handpicked Mendoza clone grapes grown on the sunsoaked slopes of Gisborne. The wine is barrelfermented and aged in premium French oak, resulting in a rich, complex expression with layers of ripe stone fruit, citrus, brioche, and toasty oak. It’s known for its creamy texture, vibrant acidity, and long, elegant finish. The Irwin stands as a benchmark for premium New Zealand Chardonnay and a proud homage to Matawhero’s legacy of innovation and excellence.

Australia

The grape is not indigenous to Australia and the history of this begins at the birth of the penal colony in New South Wales…. Governor Arthur Phillip brought vines with him on the First Fleet, and numerous vineyards were established in the area that is now Sydney. By the 1890s, the popular Hunter Valley, Barossa Valley and Yarra Valley had begun to produce wine. Until the 1950s, Australia primarily produced fortified wines. These styles were popular as the additional alcohol protected the wine from microbiological attack, making it suitable for storage and transport.

Around this time, Australia saw an influx of German and Italian immigrants. They helped to expand the wine industry in the Barossa and Riverina regions. Many of their descendants still operate wineries in these areas today. They bought with them experience and some indigenous grapes to their homeland, such as aromatic whites like Riesling, fruit forward red wines like Primitivo and Montepulciano. It’s during the 1970s that Australia really developed their own unique style.

During this decade, Australia also developed the wine cask, or ‘bag in a box’. This simple Australian invention made wine more accessible, as people could drink a small amount at a time. Australia is currently the seventh largest wine manufacturer in the world, producing more than 1000 million litres of wine last year.

FRANCE

French wine originated in the 6th century BC with the colonization of Southern Gaul by Greek settlers. The Roman Empire licensed regions in the south of France to produce wines. St. Martin of Tours planted vineyards while spreading Christianity in the 4th century. During the Middle Ages, monks-maintained vineyards and conserved wine making knowledge and skills. Monasteries had the resources, security and motivation to produce a steady supply of wine both for celebrating mass and generating income. Over time, the nobility developed extensive vineyards. The French Revolution led to a lull in the wine industry as vineyards owned by the Church and the nobility were confiscated. The French wine industry was devastated by the spread of Mildew and Phylloxera across Europe at the end of the 19th century, the First World War and the Great Depression. The threat of competition against treasured French “brands” such as Champagne and Bordeaux led to the creation of the Appellation d’Origine Controlée (AOC) in 1935. This classification system by the government is still in force. After the Second World War, a new generation of wine growers created the modern French wines we know today.

EN BOURGOGNE DEPUIS 1797

italy

The popularity of Italian wine rose and fell with the Roman Empire, although it was still consistently produced, largely by Christian monks during the Dark Ages. Come the renaissance, however, it’s popularity once again skyrocketed – until the 19th century when, along with much of northern Europe, Italy’s vineyards fell afoul of the vine louse phylloxera. A great number of prestigious vineyards were destroyed, and their replacements were planted with quantity rather than quality in mind. As such, the early- to mid-20th century saw Italy become a global source of inexpensive table wine. The 1960s saw officials finally take action to restore the country’s oncegrand winemaking reputation and introduced a series of laws to control quality and labelling. Today, Italy is known for noble reds such as Chianti, Barbaresco and Brunello, as well as zesty whites and, of course, ever-popular sparkling wines such as Asti and Prosecco. The country’s vast range of wines encompasses a flavour profile to suit every taste – and every match is one born of quality and passion. It’s not hard to see why Italian wines continue to take the world by storm.

Portugal’s winemaking legacy is one of the oldest and most storied in the world, with roots tracing back to 2000 BC. Over the centuries, the country’s viticulture has been shaped by a rich tapestry of influences—from Phoenician traders and Roman settlers to monastic orders that preserved and refined winemaking through the Middle Ages. A major milestone came in 1756 with the official demarcation of the Douro Valley, making it one of the first regulated wine regions in the world and establishing Portugal’s global reputation through the production of Port wine.

Today, Portugal stands out for its extraordinary diversity of indigenous grape varieties—over 250 unique cultivars—many of which are rarely found outside its borders. This genetic richness, combined with a wide range of microclimates and soils, allows for an impressive array of wine styles. The Douro and Dão regions produce structured, age-worthy reds; Alentejo offers bold, fruit-forward wines from sundrenched plains; and the islands of Madeira and the Azores contribute distinctive fortified and volcanicinfluenced wines.

Modern Portuguese winemakers blend innovation with deep-rooted tradition, crafting wines that are expressive, authentic, and increasingly sought after on the world stage. Whether it’s a crisp Vinho Verde, a complex Touriga Nacional, or a richly layered Madeira, Portugal offers a compelling journey through one of Europe’s most dynamic wine landscapes.

california

California’s wine history is a fascinating journey that dates back to the 18th century, when Spanish missionaries first planted vineyards to produce wine for religious ceremonies. The Mission grape, introduced by Father Junípero Serra, dominated early winemaking until the mid-19th century.

The California Gold Rush (1848–1855) brought an influx of settlers, increasing demand for wine and leading to the expansion of vineyards in Northern California, particularly in Napa and Sonoma. By the early 20th century, California was exporting wine globally, but Prohibition (1920–1933) nearly destroyed the industry, forcing many wineries to shut down.

After Prohibition, California’s wine industry slowly recovered, but it wasn’t until the 1976 Judgment of Paris—where California wines famously outperformed French wines in a blind tasting—that the state gained international recognition. Today, California is a global wine powerhouse, producing some of the world’s finest wines across regions like Napa Valley, Sonoma, Paso Robles, and Santa Barbara.

ravenswood

CALIFORNIA

As Francis Ford Coppola might tell you, there should only ever be one Godfather, and when it comes to the Zinfandel grape and California, that’s Joel Peterson. Established in 1976, Joel’s Ravenswood winery was one of the very first to take on the production of big, bold Zinfandel wines from Sonoma County and introduce them to the world. Robust and red are the two terms that define Ravenswood; the pre-prohibition vines are old, low cropping and dry farmed. Ravenswood strive to celebrate these venerable vineyards with their soulful wines, one of the few wineries that has benefited from the philosophical and winemaking skills of one person for more than 40 years, contributing to a consistency of quality and style rarely found in California.

south america

South American wine has deep colonial roots, with vines first planted by Spanish missionaries in the 16th century. For centuries, production remained largely local, with wines made for religious and domestic use. In the 19th century, European immigrants—particularly from France and Italy—brought new grape varieties and winemaking techniques, laying the foundation for modern viticulture. However, it wasn’t until the late 20th century that South American wines gained global recognition. Chile and Argentina led the charge, investing in technology, quality control, and international marketing. Today, the region is celebrated for bold reds like Malbec and Carmenère, crisp whites, and high-altitude wines that rival the best in the world. With a mix of tradition, innovation, and ideal growing conditions, South America continues to rise as a powerhouse in global wine.

Chairman and Head Winemaker Aurelio Montes takes all this in his globe-straddling stride. Together with the late Douglas Murray, Aurelio started the ball rolling in 1987 to showcase to the world Chile’s hitherto untapped potential for premium winemaking, and Montes continues to set the benchmark.
