THE PRESIDENT’S MID-YEAR REPORT Listening to Our Students JULY 1, 2022 — DECEMBER 31, 2022

THANK YOU

To the more than 1200 students who completed the Hampton Student Survey — which provided vital feedback — I say thank you! Your input along with information I have garnered through monthly meetings with the Student Government Association and personal interactions with students has put into motion various campus projects and initiatives designed to enhance your Hampton experience.

WE HEAR YOU

Most (78%) of you said that you are PROUD to be a HAMPTONIAN. You feel that you belong here (68%). You appreciate Hampton University’s CULTURE, which promotes a family-like community. You are proud of Hampton’s PRESTIGE; you recognize and value the SUPPORT Hampton offers; and you appreciate Hampton’s high ACADEMIC STANDARDS. In short, you are proud to attend an HBCU that boasts such a storied history and remains true to cherished traditions. We are thrilled to hear all of this!

WE PROMISE

Noted among your expressed concerns are FOOD quality and variety, disrepair of BUILDINGS, and Wi-Fi capability. We recognize that our concerted attention and efforts to improve these and all matters directly related to student life and satisfaction are what is required to better the quality of your time at Hampton. Additionally, we understand that there are areas of concern that go beyond those related to students. They will be addressed in a comprehensive report to be published at the end of the year. We are viewing Hampton through a broad lens to ensure that we fortify our foundation for a better future.

Again, by completing the Hampton Student Survey, you assisted our intention to enhance student life at Our Home by the Sea where our ongoing goal is to Deliver the #1 Student Experience in America.

Thank you,

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

EVERYONE IS FROM DIFFERENT PLACES AND WE ALL LOOK DIFFERENT, BUT WE ALL COME TOGETHER AS ONE. THIS CULTURE IS SOMETHING THAT I ALWAYS LOOKED FOR IN A UNIVERSITY.

TECHNOLOGY AND WI-FI UPGRADES

8 HAMPTON UNIVERSITY RENOVATIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS

TECHNOLOGY AND WI-FI UPGRADES

Improvements that support automating processes

• Kiosks implementation for Health Services, ATM/Help Desk, Student Accounts, Registrar. Currently implementing the queuing system for students to sign up for services via QR Code, cell, web or the Kiosk devices. The Kiosk systems will be fully operational and in place in various offices (e.g., Library, Financial Aid, Business Office, and the Registrars) by spring break. We are soliciting student volunteers to support the end-user testing as we finalize the go-live with the vendor.

• Website migration of all legacy code to the new WordPress platform

• Mobile App and Student Portal content upgrades to improve functionality. We are adding additional content to support campus activities, events, etc. The goal is to link to existing website content. Updates are an ongoing process for the Mobile App Student Portal.

• DocuSign migration and conversion of existing documents to automate processes

• HUPD T2 System for automating permits/decals/ticketing underway

• Transact online photo processing

• Catalogs converted for DegreeWorks (on-time graduation tool) in user testing

• Adobe Suite access to support paperless approval processing upgrades that support improving the campus network infrastructure and systems

• Fiber installation in residential dorms to replace outdated multimode with OM3

• Bandwidth upgrade from 10Gbps to 50Gbps completed December 2022

• Bandwidth upgrade to 100Gbps underway

• Procurements in place to replace outdated Core equipment appliances

• Wireless Access Points (WAP) reconfiguration and deployment to resident spaces

• Palo Alto Firewall configured and deployed for security and improved throughput

• Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) configured for all faculty, staff, and student. Note — MFA is in place for Faculty and Staff. Next step is full campus implementation. MFA will further support our network and email security. To minimize disruption to campus during grading and graduation, the CIT plans to implement the MFA solution post-graduation starting May 15, 2023.

Initiatives that support improving academic and student engagement

• Deployed videoconferencing (Surface Hubs) to all academic schools

• Increased classroom technology (Promethean Boards) by 23% campus-wide

• Installed signage boards in academic and administrative spaces

• Updated Ogden Hall to digital systems and technology

• Updated Little Theatre auditorium with new audio and visual systems

• Implemented Microsoft A5 Security and MFA to improve security

• Awarded an “IT Modernization and Technical Certification” grant that will add MS Learn and Cisco certifications for faculty, staff, and students

UPCOMING TECHNOLOGY PROJECTS FOR 2023

Kiosk-Based Queueing Services Portal

The Web Services Team is leading the CIT effort in developing standalone Service Kiosks for deployment around campus. These Kiosks will help decrease student wait times and prevent the grouping of multiple individuals in a single location while waiting for assistance. In addition to using Kiosks for everyday activities such as password resets or device registration, students will be notified via email or text when the service POC is available to assist them with their issues. Network Infrastructure

Upgrade Many critical IT upgrades and other projects have been delayed, set back, and negatively impacted by supply chain issues. To bridge operational gaps brought on by supply chain bottlenecks, the CIT has devised a strategy with our vendor partners to improve access to the residential areas. After the damaged fiber replacement, we monitored network traffic and noted some improvements. However, speeds lagged despite the upgrade to 50G. Outdated WAPs and limitations of the existing devices need to support the updated bandwidth. Our Next steps include replacing ALL legacy with OM3 fiber because the current cable system cannot withstand the increased bandwidth. Also, the distances from the main hub are an issue for several dorms (e.g., Kennedy, Twitchell, VC, White) and will be replaced. We identified two residence areas, Wilder and Stone, and implemented the new OM3 fiber solution. The Network Team obtained the following speed results from Wilder after the fiber OM3 upgrade: These significant improvements demonstrated when we monitored Wilder are expected to be replicated for all residence halls as the old fiber is replaced with the new OM3 fiber and we complete the bandwidth upgrades. We MUST replace all remaining legacy equipment (e.g., switches/routers) at building points. While on order, we have not received the needed devices from our vendor. The CIT department regularly meets with the vendor and they are working with us to expedite equipment procurements.

10 HAMPTON UNIVERSITY RENOVATIONS AND IMPROVEMENTS

The schedule for the networking fiber upgrade includes the following residence halls:

• Kennedy

• Twitchell

• Virginia Cleveland

We are implementing an interim solution demonstrating successful upload and download speeds for the academic areas. The Aruba Central migration and reconfiguring to move 40% of the WAPs from the Residential Network to the ADMIN/ Academic network will balance the bandwidth load in the short and long term. The new firewalls are in place, augmenting monitoring and supporting managed security. The following residence halls are being migrated to use the Aruba Central solution, resulting in significant WI-FI experience changes.

• McGrew

• Dubois

• Orchard

• Harkness

Once we receive the core equipment and migrate the planned locations listed above to Aruba Central WAP technology, the gains in speed should be even more significant campus-wide. We plan to complete this project phase during the spring break (March 11–19) with minimal disruption. Academic areas, including:

• Engineering

• Business

• Nursing

• Pharmacy

• SLA buildings

These areas will have new fiber and WAP installed during the winter break. We discovered the additional requirement to add WAP to specific areas (e.g., Nursing) and anticipate completing that project by spring break.

• Multi-Use Facility

• White

• Holmes

• James

• Moton

• Stone
