Roland M. Carter ’64 Receives the 2024 Presidential Citizenship Award as Finance

Trailblazer Alumna Bestows $10K and Inspires Students at “Majestic” 131st Founder’s Day

On the Newly Dedicated Dr. Roland M. Carter Stage in Ogden Hall

In an electric 131st Founders Day, celebrating the “majesty” of Hampton University, a packed house watched emotionally as the highly acclaimed music aficionado Dr. Roland M. Carter was honored with awards and the namesake of the Robert C. Ogden Hall’s stage, which is now the Dr. Roland M. Carter Stage.

This year’s Founder’s Day, an annual celebration of HU’s founder, Brigadier General Samuel Chapman Armstrong, was unlike any other, as Armstrong’s grandson, Arthur Howell, helped HU President Darrell

K. Williams mark the occasion during a commemorative wreath-placing ceremony.

Finance trailblazer Alumna Racquel Oden ‘98, Head of Wealth and Personal Banking, HSBC Bank USA, presented the University with a gift of $10K and gave a fiery keynote, encouraging students to be life-long learners and to become mentors and advocates, helping others to succeed.

“Each of you stands on the shoulders of giants,” said Oden. “Your job is to advocate for not only you, your University, but the

community as a whole.

“Your hunger for knowledge cannot stop when you leave this institution,” said Oden. “You have to have a thirst for knowledge which will allow you to outperform and compete. When others have slowed down and are settling, that is not what you will be doing.

“Let’s remember that it’s your grit that overcomes obstacles, your grind that elevates you, your grace that defines you, and your gratitude that grounds you. As Hamptonians, you are the embodiment of those values.”

Ogden Hall was full of emotion, heavenly voices, and thunderous applause from those who traveled from all over the country to honor the living legend Roland M. Carter. Taking in the moment, President Williams marveled at the “majesty of Hampton.”

“It is with immense pride and joy that we mark this momentous occasion in the rich history of Hampton University,” said President Williams. “We unveil the Dr. Roland M. Carter stage in

our esteemed Ogden Hall. This stage was once graced by the likes of the Count Basie Orchestra, Maya Angelou, Ozzie Davis, and Rubie Dee to the cinematic brilliance of Spike Lee. This stage has been a campus for cultural excellence.” The Alvin Ailey Dance Theater and the Virginia Symphony have recently graced the stage, along with the critically acclaimed Taraji P. Henson and countless others.

Overwhelmed with emotion, Carter conducted a portion of “Lift Every Voice and Sing” with the HU Choir, students, and alumni performing. He was recognized as the 2024 Presidential Citizenship Award recipient, received an honorary doctorate degree, and watched in awe at the unveiling of the Dr. Roland M. Carter stage in Ogden Hall.

“Dr. Roland M. Carter has given unselfishly to enrich the lives of those around him and to improve our collective community and the world,” said President Williams. “He has made significant contributions to our community and all humanity.”

MARCH 2024 5

President Williams referred to Carter as the “great, modern Hampton maestro,” having “impacted the lives of thousands with his work, drawing crowds to immerse themselves in unforgettable musical experiences, elevating the HU Minister’s Conference Choir Guild’s performances to captivating heights for over 40 years,” in addition to serving 25 years of leadership to HU.

Having received innumerable honors and awards from schools and institutions across the country, Carter, an HU alumnus class of ‘64, explained that these awards from Hampton moved him differently, citing lyrics from the HU alma mater.

“No one can ever know to come full circle and be home [and be honored]. ‘O Hampton, we never can make thee a song, except as our lives do the singing.’”

Hampton Hosts a Middle School

“Math Counts” Competition

On Saturday, February 3rd, the Hampton University Department of Mathematics orchestrated a highly successful Math Counts competition.

The event, sponsored by the Virginia Society of Professional Engineers, saw participation from 34 talented students who have become the top math performers at their respective middle schools.

“It is truly inspiring to witness the passion and dedication these young mathematicians bring to the field,” said Arun Verma, Ph.D. “Math Counts is not just a competition. It is a celebration of mathematical achievement and a stepping-stone for these students towards a brighter academic future.”

The Math Counts competition, a testament to Verma’s commitment to fostering mathematical excellence, showcased the intellectual prowess of

young minds in the realm of mathematics, featured a range of challenging mathematical problems, and encouraged critical thinking and problem-solving abilities among the students.

Math Counts, a nationally recognized organization, not only provides a platform for students to demonstrate their skills but also highlights the importance of mathematics in education.

Verma has hosted the competition at HU for the past decade, fostering middle schoolers’ interest in math and, eventually, STEM careers. Verma said he builds upon the competition as a recruiting tool and early exposure to the college experience for youth ages 12 to 15 years,

Verma continues to play a pivotal role in advancing mathematical education at Hampton University and beyond.

Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic: Hampton Men’s Basketball Takes Home the Crown

Third time is a charm! On February 3, the Hampton University Men’s basketball team participated in the annual Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey. Hampton, Grambling, Jackson State, and Howard were the four HBCUs chosen to play for this year’s classic.

Michael B. Jordan created the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic alongside Hampton’s alumnus, Chad Easterling. Chad Easterling is a 2008 Hampton graduate and the Co-Founder and Managing Partner of his company, Obsidianworks, a culture-powered media and consulting agency.

Easterling spoke of the initial conversation he had with Michael B. Jordan about finding brands and people who wanted to have an impact on the black community. “Invesco was serious about it and wanted to make sure they had a presence in it. It’s more than just giving this platform for HBCUs; it’s also about how you are setting them up for the future, financially,” Easterling shared.

Throughout the event, there were a multitude of alumni who showed up and showed out for Hampton! Hampton Alumnus Somos Thompson hosted a pop-up shop as the official designer of the Legacy Classic. Thompson is also in HU’s Forty Under Forty initiative, which recognizes outstanding alumni who have demonstrated excellence in various areas like art, business, media, and community service. “I think it’s important to lend a

voice to the future. Whenever I see anyone from Hampton, I tell them to call with any question. We have to help and give back as alumni.” Many other Hampton alumni were in attendance, including the President of MSNBC, Rashida Jones, the first black woman to lead a major cable news network, and Hampton Trustee, Calvin L. Butts, Jr.

Hampton and Howard played the last game, fortifying the battle for “The Real HU.” In the beginning, Hampton and Howard were neck and neck, but Howard took the lead before halftime. A three-pointer by Jerry Deng at the 24-second mark gave that push to win the game and bring home the crown from a successful weekend!

Age is Just a Number: Kyndall Johnson’s Unconventional Journey to Graduation

Booker T. Washington and Future Alumna Kyndall Johnson share a common bond: they both entered Hampton when they were 16 years old. Now, at 19, Kyndall - who arrived with Quintessence XII - is ready to walk the stage this spring with Ogre-PhiOgre XVIII.

Originally from Tampa, FL, Kyndall found her way to Hampton after middle school while visiting the Young Diplomats program. “On the last day of the program, [Dr. Harvey] offered everybody an acceptance letter if we maintained our GPA until you had to apply. So I’m like, ‘Okay, I already have a college acceptance.’”

After graduating from high school at 16, Kyndall only applied to two schools: Hampton and Howard. She was accepted into Hampton and began in the fall.

When asked if she ever felt different on campus because of her age, she said she had a pretty smooth experience. “I stayed on campus—Twitchell my first year, Winona the next year, and now. I did not feel weird because nobody else knew my age but myself, and nobody asked. They just assumed I was 18.”

Now graduating at 19, Kyndall is full of different emotions. “The whole leaving early– It started in high school. I don’t think I had a feeling when I graduated high school. But now that I’m graduating from college, I don’t know. I feel– I feel things. I feel like I’m putting my family on. It’s creating a legacy for them, just setting the bar a little bit higher so they can see, like, ‘Oh, this is attainable for me,’ but I don’t like to bask in my achievements too long because I just don’t want to get comfortable where I’m at. So I’m happy with where I’m at. I’m blessed, but there are things I need to do.”

Kyndall is currently applying to graduate schools. “My major is sociology with a minor in leadership studies, and I plan on dealing with international intelligence.”

Kyndall Johnson’s journey to Hampton University at the age of 16 was exceptional, but her hard work, dedication, and perseverance paid off. Kyndall is a true inspiration to all who aspire to greatness, regardless of age. We wish her all the best in her future endeavors and hope she continues to make her family proud.

Hampton University Architecture Students Embark on a Transformative Field Trip to Sarasota, Florida

Hampton University Architecture students had an informative and fun field trip to Sarasota, Florida, in February. This trip was possible thanks to the nonprofit Architecture Sarasota’s generous support and hospitality in partnership with the Sarasota Art Museum and Westcoast Black Theater Troupe. Dr. Sujin Kim, an assistant professor of Architecture, received a grant and built the partnership to 3D scan the former Galloway’s Furniture Showroom and incorporate the project into the coursework. The Galloway building, built in 1959 and designed by renowned architect Victor Lundy, was originally a two-story-tall wooden “morning glory” structure with a circular mezzanine and glass wall wrapping around it. Unfortunately, the structure was concealed and damaged by a 1980s renovation and is currently underused. The third-year undergraduate students in the Intermediate Architecture Design Studio class propose revitalizing the Galloway building, which is currently part of the Sarasota Art Museum complex. The students’ design proposals will be exhibited in the museum from July through October.

During the field trip, the students explored the Galloway site and museum and met stakeholders. Beyond the project, the students visited an award-winning architecture firm, Sweet Sparkman Architecture and Interiors, and a construction site with Damien Blumetti Architect. The class was invited to Architecture Sarasota’s dinner reception at Umbrella House, designed by great modernist architect Paul Rudolph, and had a chance to mingle with community members, including the Hampton University family, who were interested in arts, architecture, and education. The following day, guided tours of significant modernist architecture further inspired the students. A finale was touring the Westcoast Black Theater Troupe’s facility and seeing A Soldier’s Play performance. This educational partnership will provide feedback on student work throughout the semester.

Kashmir Hyder ‘07 and Alex’s Sunnyside Playroom Creates Family Friendly Spaces in Cancer Centers

Cancer is a disease that has impacted many people’s lives, personally or through someone close to them. However, people like Alumna Kashmir Hyder ‘07 have decided to take charge and make a positive difference. She is a board member of Alex’s Sunnyside Playroom, which strives to provide comfort and support to families dealing with cancer. On November 29th, 2023, they celebrated the grand opening of their second playroom at the OSU Comprehensive Cancer Center- The James.

The idea for Alex’s Sunnyside playroom came from Hyder’s mom’s good friend Gwendolyn after her husband, Alex, got cancer. “Her husband passed away of cancer. He was an anesthesiologist. And when he passed away, what she remembered was that hospitals did not have places for families to come. They had two small children. And so when their kids would visit, they could only be in the room with him. So when he’s all hooked up, and her kids are young, like four and seven, you want to engage with them, you want to play with them, you want to talk to them. But he was relegated to the hospital towards the end. And so she was like, this is not helpful. So many

THE HAMPTONIAN 22
06 Alumni Features

families want to color with their kids, read to them, or walk around a specific space. But hospitals are very sterile places, so they don’t want people everywhere. So she wanted to create new spaces in cancer centers, specifically where families could go and spend time outside of the hospital because she thought that would have been very valuable for families.” Hyder was then asked to join the board to create these spaces. She has now served on the board for four years.

Their first location was at the hospital where Alex worked, Riverside Methodist Hospital.

This new addition to the James Cancer Hospital is more than just a physical space; it embodies the essence of compassion and unwavering support that defines Alex’s Sunnyside Playroom. Established as a beacon of hope, the playroom is a testament to the organization’s commitment to combat cancer and create a warm and welcoming haven within the confines of an adult cancer hospital.

Focused on family-friendly amenities and fostering a nurturing atmosphere, the

playroom symbolizes Alex’s Sunnyside Playroom’s dedication to enhancing the well-being of patients and their loved ones. By providing comfort and care, the organization strives to positively impact the lives of those affected by cancer.

Hyder is very proud of working with a group that offers these spaces. “So many people are touched by cancer, and so it’s not just the centers. During Alex’s birthday month, we try to do something nice every day to find other cancer families and give them packages. You’re visiting hospitals, you’re doing things, you’re engaging with the community of cancer survivors and, a lot of times, widowers, people forget about them. It’s like everyone’s with you during the journey, And at the end, we’re trying to write nice notes and still engage them. Let them know that they’re these people are being thought about. But it’s something that I have been impacted by, like so many people. So it’s easily relatable, which is why I am part of that.”
