…THE HOLY TRINITY OF ACADEMIC RIGOUR, SPORTING PROWESS AND CO-CURRICULAR ACHIEVEMENT… TATLER SCHOOLS GUIDE 2021

WELCOME TO HAMPTON For over 450 years, our School has been helping boys to fulfil their potential and realise their aspirations.

I wish you a warm personal welcome to Hampton ‒ our happy and vibrant School where our remarkably talented boys forge lifelong friendships and have a huge amount of fun. Academic standards at Hampton are impressively high and flow naturally from Hamptonians’ well-balanced approach to School life, their love of learning, and their enthusiastic engagement with the exceptional range of co-curricular opportunities available to them. Our boys benefit from inspiring, subject-specialist teaching and their characteristic togetherness and generosity of spirit, allied with their grounded nature and sense of humour, sustain an aspirational culture in which everyone can flourish and thrive. We are a diverse, inclusive community where individuality is celebrated and boys are encouraged to follow their own path within a nurturing and caring environment. Above all, we expect our pupils to aim for personal best while supporting those around them with kindness and respect ‒ this is the Hampton way and we feel that it is distinctive.

Close links with neighbouring Lady Eleanor Holles School (LEH) provide the best of both worlds: all the acknowledged academic and other advantages of single-sex education alongside the benefits of sociable, enjoyable interaction via joint co-curricular activities and a shared transport network. We hope the following pages will offer you many useful insights into day-to-day life at our School. However, by far the best way to experience Hampton is to spend time here with my colleagues and especially our wonderful boys. We look forward to meeting your family during a visit soon! With kind regards and best wishes

OUR SCHOOL

Situated in a leafy suburb of South West London, Hampton is rare among schools in the capital in benefitting from over 27 acres of playing fields within spacious grounds. A continual investment programme ensures that our pupils enjoy use of excellent facilities, including a state-of-the-art, all-weather 3G sportsground and large multi-purpose sports hall. Our superb Performing Arts centre, The Hammond Theatre, provides an inspiring venue for concerts, performances and visiting speakers. A purpose-built Sixth Form Study Centre offers an ideal environment for both collaborative and independent study. Hamptonians also have access to a fully-equipped Library and specialist facilities for Art, Sciences, Design and Engineering, Coding and Computing, and Modern and Classical Languages. The Millennium Boat House, shared with neighbouring LEH, occupies a prime location on the nearby River Thames and provides a focal point for our nationally-recognised Boat Club.

GENEROUS SPIRITED AND KIND Togetherness, mutual support and camaraderie are defining features and distinctive characteristics of Hampton life.

Our pupils understand and embrace the paramount importance placed within our community upon kindness, fellowship and generosity of spirit. Hamptonians do amazing things individually, but they also celebrate each other’s successes wholeheartedly. They are expected to embrace the social responsibility that comes with the privileges and opportunities they enjoy and to be actively involved in our extensive local, national and international partnership programme.

EN QUIRING

Hamptonians are both engaging young people to teach and engaged in their learning; their many and varied successes flow naturally from day-to-day enjoyment of School life. Pupils benefit from extraordinary opportunities and are encouraged to pursue existing passions, try new things and to meet and embrace challenges inside and outside the classroom. It is these experiences, whether academic or co-curricular, that help our boys to develop the character, adaptability and cheerful resilience that they’ll need to flourish in our increasingly complex and challenging world.

AN ASPIRATIONAL CULTURE An inspiring culture of aspiration encourages our pupils to strive for personal best. While Hamptonians’ public examination results and university entrance record place them in the very top echelon nationally, they also excel in all areas of co-curricular life – from the sports field to performing in concerts and productions in The Hammond Theatre.

ACADEMIC EXCELLENCE

ALL THE TEACHERS WANT THE BOYS TO BE THE BEST VERSIONS OF THEMSELVES. HAMPTON PARENT

Lessons at Hampton are dynamic, fun and full of variety, combining the best of traditional teaching methods with new technologies and a willingness to innovate.

We help everyone to aim high and our boys’ warm but purposeful relationships with their subject-specialist teachers are the keystone to their remarkable successes. Examination results are of course important in accessing leading UK and overseas universities, but a Hampton education is about so much more than top grades. We aim to instil a life-long love of learning and a spirit of intellectual curiosity that will enrich our pupils’ lives beyond their school days. Hamptonians are encouraged to challenge, question and debate, to be inventive and form opinions, and to develop personal attributes that are valued in all walks of life. We also teach our boys that, in order to fulfil their aspirations, they must work hard, respect others’ views and embrace the importance of diversity of thought and skills within teams. Today’s leading companies and employers are looking for more than just qualifications, so we develop our pupils’ creativity, adaptability and emotional intelligence to enable them to thrive in their 21st Century working lives. Beyond the classroom, myriad trips, tours, visits, exchange programmes, academic societies and external speakers all inspire and broaden Hamptonian minds ‒ we want to enable our boys not only to make sense of the world but also to go out and improve it, and make a difference for good.

SPORT FOR ALL

As one of the country’s leading sporting schools, Hampton has a longstanding reputation for exemplary standards of sportsmanship and sustained success across an unusually wide range of sports. Standards are high and many Hamptonians achieve representative honours at county, regional and national level. But with over 15 sports on offer, our focus is upon promoting active involvement in regular healthy, physical activity for boys of all abilities. Boys are free to choose and are never obliged to play a particular sport at any time. Football and Rugby run in parallel during the autumn and spring terms, while Athletics, Cricket and Tennis are our summer term sports. The School is also nationally renowned for Rowing (a year-round option) and numerous specialist sports clubs run at lunchtimes for all age groups, including Badminton, Basketball, Cross Country, Table Tennis and Volleyball.

16 2 I SPORT FOR ALL

With first-class coaching provided for all pupils, we help Hamptonians to develop their skills to the best of their ability. And whether our boys are participating in our sporting programme for competition, fitness or purely for recreation, Hampton sport is great fun. CREATIVE ARTS The vibrancy, variety and creativity of Hampton’s cultural programme is remarkable and enlivens life at our School. Art, Drama, Music and Design and Engineering are fundamental to our co-curricular provision and offer important release valves from academic pressures. From jazz bands, rock groups and guitar ensembles to chamber orchestras and choirs, Music is integral to the School day and every Hamptonian is encouraged to develop their musical talents if they so wish. An extensive programme of concerts allows boys of all ages and abilities many opportunities to perform.

Best of the Best for Music: The Week, Independent Schools Guide

For those with a desire to tread the boards, productions ranging from musicals and comedies to Shakespearean tragedy are staged in our professional-standard Hammond Theatre. There are regular collaborative drama and musical productions with local girls’ schools, and a Technical Theatre Club thrives for those keen to get involved behind the scenes. Innovation, imagination and ingenuity also flourish in our Art studios and Design and Engineering workshops. Impressive pupil artwork is displayed throughout the School; 3D-printers and CAD CAM technology bring technical design to life, producing a steady stream of Arkwright Scholars and future engineers.

CO-CURRICULAR PROGRAMME

Hamptonians are not all about hard work and their School lives are tremendous fun – a small but essential word in providing a fulfilling education. We believe that happy and engaged boys are much more likely to achieve personal best academically. Timetabled lessons are supplemented and enriched by an extensive range of co-curricular activities, to ensure that Hamptonians enjoy a broad and balanced all-round education. These opportunities broaden boys’ horizons, develop tenacity, and enable them to explore existing interests or new passions. The communication, leadership and collaborative skills they acquire along the way are all highly valued by future employers; but above all, enthusiastic involvement in these activities generates Hamptonian friendships that last a lifetime. From Eco Club to Model Aviation and Beekeeping to Cryptic Crosswords, our lunchtime programme reflects the energy, diversity and enthusiasm of our pupils and staff. With over 130 different activities on offer, there really is something for everyone and every Hamptonian can follow their own path.

“I defy anyone not to find their niche!” Tatler Schools Guide 2022

An extensive programme of UK-based and overseas trips nurtures enquiring Hamptonian minds and helps to prepare our boys to be global citizens ‒ whether a History trip to Berlin, a language exchange in France or Spain, a music tour to Italy, or an Adventure Society expedition to Borneo, Malawi or Namibia. PUPIL WELLBEING Growing teenage boys will at times need support of one kind or another and at Hampton we attach the highest importance to pastoral care. We know that boys thrive when they feel safe, understood and valued as individuals. Hampton is a very happy, inclusive and diverse community, and looking after our pupils’ wellbeing is paramount. We strongly believe that the moral and spiritual dimensions of education are essential in helping boys to flourish and become socially responsible and emotionally intelligent adults – personal qualities which will serve them well whatever they do and wherever they are. Pupils are supported by a pastoral team of Form Tutors and Heads of Year, who provide individual guidance, advice and support. We pay close attention to understanding the motivations, strengths and ambitions of each boy; the maintenance of a close three-way partnership (boy-parent-School) is vital within this process. Hamptonians’ support for one another, their distinctive camaraderie and the mentoring of younger boys by older ones are cherished traditions of our School.

THE QUALITY OF PUPILS’ PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT IS OUTSTANDING...THE CARING AND SUPPORTIVE EXAMPLE SET BY STAFF IS MIRRORED IN THE PUPILS’ OWN INTERACTION. THEY SHOW GENUINE CONCERN FOR EACH OTHER AND GROW STRONGLY IN SELF-AWARENESS AND SELF-ESTEEM. INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS INSPECTORATE

LIFE BEYOND HAMPTON

Hamptonians leave us as happy, well-rounded young men, with fond memories of their School and friendships for life. They move on with the confidence, adaptability and inner resolve to flourish and contribute fully in the world beyond Hampton. Our Leavers join the world’s leading academic institutions to study a wide range of subjects. Nearly all Hamptonians secure places at Russell Group or equivalent settings, with many moving on to read their chosen subject at one of the global top-10 universities, including Oxford and Cambridge. An increasing number of our pupils head to top US universities or choose to take up Degree Apprenticeships.

All Hampton pupils receive personalised careers advice while at the School; they also derive lifelong benefit from being members of a thriving global network of alumni. Hamptonians become leaders and highly-successful professionals across a huge range of different disciplines and industries, but they are also compassionate partners, kind parents, and empathetic neighbours and friends.
