Would you like to find out why icebergs float and why zebras have stripes? Would you like to write your own play and use numbers to find hidden treasure? Then come and join us at Lion Learning - a place for Maths whizzes, star storytellers, Science sparks and roaring readers in Year 5!

Headmaster’s Introduction Thank you for your interest in Lion Learning. This is an exciting programme for Year 5 boys and girls who are passionate about learning. It has been designed to offer them additional academic challenge and will involve inspiring lessons with subject specialist teachers at Hampton School. We are pleased to offer this course without charge. An overview of the programme is provided in this leaflet. What will boys and girls be learning?

Would you like to write your own play? At Lion Learning, we will explore the hilarious and revolting characte rs created by David Walliams and Roa ld Dahl and invent our own. Lion Lear ners will be BFGs, creating their own words and experimenting with rhyme and rhythm. There will be no more “hot suns” or “cold rain”, instead our learners will use language to mix colour, sme lls and sounds to captivate their readers. Their writing will be so vivid the readers will reach for sunglasses, or an umbrella ! Exploring Shakespeare, Philip Pullm an, CS Lewis and JK Rowling, Lion Learners will develop their vocabula ry and descriptive and analytical skills . Our young learners will also have opportunities to watch plays and act out their own scenes. They will discu ss and explore the wonderful world of words and literature.

Who am I? We will begin our exploration with some of the fundamental ‘big questions ’. We will explore issues of self-identity and the concepts of mind and body, with the opportunity to discuss René Desc artes’ famous and tricky statement ‘I think therefore I am’. Next, we will mov e beyond thinking about ourselves to considering other people: ‘Are you a good person?’ We will explore wha t philosophers have said about how we should treat other people and wha t it means to live a good life. We will also examine our own mora l code. As we share our planet, we will also consider life beyond humanity : ‘Are animals people too?’ We will explore the issue of animal welfa re, looking at various views about how animals should be treated. Finally, at the end of our journey we will ask ‘Why is there something rather than noth ing?’ Why is the universe here? Is this even a good question?

There are three levels to the Challenge and badges are awarded once each level is completed.

Bronze Award

Pupils will need to read one book from each of the six genres in the Lion Learning Reading Challenge

Silver Award

Pupils will need to have achieved the Bronze Award, read three further books from the Lion Learning Reading Challenge list and complete three related extension challenges

Gold Award

Pupils will need to have achieved the Silver Award, read three further books from the Lion Learning Reading Challenge list and complete three related extension challenges

Pupil & Parent/Guardian Commitment We expect boys and girls who are Lion Learners to: attend all sessions complete the homework set for each subject take part in the Lion Learning Reading Challenge show the commitment outlined in the Home/School contract

We ask parents and guardians to: encourage your child to attend all sessions encourage your child to complete the homework set encourage your child by talking to him/her about what they are learning support your child in overcoming difficult tasks let us know if your child is struggling in any way


Frequently Asked Questions Does my child have to attend every month? We expect children to attend all sessions. How do we get to Hampton School? The 111, R70 and 285 buses all stop outside Hampton School or very close to it. After the first session (to which we request parents/ guardians bring their Lion Learner) we hope to offer a minibus service. Further details will follow. Please let us know if you would be interested in this service. What happens if my child is ill on one of the Saturdays of the course? If your child is unwell or unable to attend for another reason, please email lionlearning@hamptonschool.org.uk to let us know as soon as you can. What happens if my child is late? Sessions start at 9.30am; please do all you can to ensure your child arrives by 9.15am so that we can start on time. If there is a problem and your child arrives late, we will help them get to the right classroom. What if my child can’t do the homework? Please try to help your child with their homework. If they are still struggling, please email lionlearning@hamptonschool.org.uk for help. Does it matter if I can’t attend the Parents’ & Guardians’ Information Morning or the Awards Morning? Please attend these mornings if it is possible to do so. We would welcome the opportunity to tell you how your child is getting on and to celebrate his/her achievements with you. Can I wait in the School while my child attends Lion Learning sessions? We regret that this isn’t possible.

What should my child wear? All Lion Learners will be given a Lion Learning t-shirt to wear to Saturday lessons. This is the uniform they should wear to all Lion Learning sessions. What should my child bring with them? They should bring a named pencil case with writing materials. All other materials will be provided. Will refreshments be provided? There will be a 20-minute break during each Saturday session and a snack and drink will be provided. Children may bring additional snacks with them if they wish but these must not contain nuts. Does the course have a qualification at the end of it? All children who complete the course will be awarded a certificate. Lion Learners may also achieve the Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards in the Lion Learning Reading Challenge. Does my child need a computer to do the homework? No, all homework should be completed on the worksheets provided and handed in to the Lion Learner’s primary school.
