WELCOME TO THE 21ST HAMPSHIRE FOOD FESTIVAL A TASTE OF SUMMER

This year Hampshire Food Festival goes BIG with a whole summertime of events running from 1st July to 31st August.

Hampshire Food Festival is brought to you by Hampshire Fare, the county food and drink group, who have been championing local for over 30 years and produce the annual Discover Local Produce guide.

Hampshire Food Festival is one of the highlights in the calendar with a focus on celebrating local food and drink, and has helped to put Hampshire on the map as a foodie destination. It also provides farmers, growers, makers and producers with an exciting and fun way to showcase their produce and engage with locals and visitors through a programme of events, tours, tastings, chef demos, markets, menus, pop-ups, workshops and more.

Experiences & Entertainments

Plot your gastronomic adventure across Hampshire, discovering landscapes, market towns, villages and cities, visiting lavender fields, vineyards and orchards, breweries and distilleries, country pubs and farm shops, on-trend cafes and smart eateries. There will be chef demos, popups, BBQ cooking, street food, Instagrammable moments, live music, family entertainment, a carnival atmosphere, and even a summer ball!

This year’s Festival also features brand new events among them Celebrating Hampshire, a two-day event hosted by Festival Place, Basingstoke, that launches the Festival (1st2nd July) and is centred round a lively Chefs’ Kitchen. There’s the first ever Winchester Food Festival (9th July) with a green ethos including tips about creating delicious budget-conscious meals and reducing food waste, plus new family-friendly New Forest Food Festival (5th-6th August).

THE LOWDOWN

Tracy Nash, Hampshire Fare, explains: “Hampshire Food Festival has always been one of the most ambitious food festivals in the country in terms of scale and reach. However, this year we have decided to make it an even bigger celebration of food and drink running across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight throughout the summer!

“People love local! We have seen a growing interest in provenance and an increase in staycation experiences which means that there is a hunger out there for food and drink events. Hampshire Food Festival’s programme of loveliness is just what everyone needs! The Festival is this summer’s must-visit with a great line-up of top chefs, involvement from Hampshire’s buzziest cafes, pubs and restaurants, and a showcase of some of the best food and drink from across Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. It’s a ‘Taste of Summer’.”

CELEBRATING HAMPSHIRE

Celebrating Hampshire is a brand new event launching Hampshire Food Festival 2023!

Running over Saturday and Sunday, 1st and 2nd July, this new event is a collaboration between Festival Place and Hampshire Fare. The focus is on a chefs’ kitchen in Festival Place’s Porchester Square with artisan produce market plus sampling.

Tracy Nash, Hampshire Fare, said: “It’s so great to be having a cookery theatre in the centre of this popular shopping centre showcasing our region’s great chefs. Thanks to Festival Place supporting local, this event will be a true celebration

of Hampshire. Cooking demos will feature Hampshire ingredients, while local growers, makers and producers will be selling their products. What is not to LOVE!”

SATURDAY 1ST JULY CHEFS’ LINE-UP SUNDAY 2ND JULY CHEFS’ LINE UP

11.00am – Martin Dawkins

(aka The Rustic Chef)

Martin is a private chef having originally learned his trade working for Marcus Wareing at Petrus, returning to Hampshire as head chef for Alex Aitken at Le Poussin, where he developed his interest in sourcing local.

12.30pm – Matt Whitfield, Executive Chef, Kimbridge Barn, Romsey

Matt is creating exciting new dining experiences at Kimbridge Barn after a career that’s included working for Michelin-starred establishments such as Eleven Madison Park in New York, and heading up the kitchens at The Montagu Arms, Beaulieu.

1.45pm – Lucy Parr

(aka The Friendly Baker)

Lucy is a Hampshire-based recipe developer who trained at Le Cordon Bleu. She has 10 years’ experience creating free-from recipes, found on her website ‘Lucy’s Friendly Foods’, and has just published her first cookbook, The Friendly Baker.

11.00am – Simon Hartnett, Executive Chef, The Queens Hotel, Southsea

Cooking runs in Simon’s wider family. His uncle by marriage, Gary Mehigan, is a celebrity chef in Australia who worked on MasterChef Australia. Simon trained at Portsmouth’s Highbury College and has worked in some of the region’s top hotels and two rosette gastro pubs.

12.15pm – Jacob Rowley, Head

CREATING NEW MEMORIES

Enjoy a Summer of Tastes and Loveliness with Hampshire Food Festival

Every year Hampshire Food Festival evolves, becoming bigger and even more wide-ranging, with new events and experiences, tours and tastings.

WORKSHOPS & EXPERIENCES

Special opportunities to learn skills and discover food stories are available. These include one-to-one coaching with TV chef Lenny Carr-Roberts, learning to cook restaurant-worthy dishes in a commercial kitchen near Winchester. Or at Hockeys Farm Shop, near Fordingbridge, you can find out how to make sausages, with demonstrations every Tuesday. It is also an opportunity to visit the delightful family-run farm shop and tea room with its focus on New Forest produce. There are on-the-farm introductions to spelt – an ancient grain that adds a sweet, nutty flavour to bread, bakes and pastry – with Kate Bayliss from Wheatsheaf Farming, North Waltham, explaining how spelt is grown, farmed and used (Saturday 22nd and 29th July). Alternatively, what about an evening of Wyrd Gin at the Montagu Arms, Beaulieu, meeting the distiller and sipping award-winning gins alongside a special gin-inspired grazing board (17th August)?

TOURS & TASTINGS

Want to find out what goes on beyond the hedgerows of our farms and vineyards, and behind the scenes at local breweries and distilleries? Book one of Hampshire Food Festival’s special tours. Downton Distillery Tours on Domaine Hugo Vineyard are available regularly (from Sunday 2nd July). There is a choice of vineyard tours, including a special evening at Goodworth Clatford, a boutique vineyard owned by an adventurous couple who will be telling their story and explaining how their grapes are grown and made into sparkling wine, accompanied by tastings (Thursday 3rd August). Not to be missed is a strawberry tour, talk and tasting with The New Forest Fruit Company (Thursday 24th August).

MINI-FESTS & MARKETS

Popping up throughout Hampshire Food Festival are mini-fests, fairs and markets at unexpected venues across the county. This year these include ‘1812 Fest’, a new food and drinks festival held by The Portsmouth Distillery in the historic surroundings of 18th century Fort Cumberland, Southsea (Saturday 8th July). Or there’s the picturesque countryside of the Meon Valley for Westlands Farm Shop Food Fair (also Saturday 8th July). Launched last year, and advocating the farm and shop’s sustainable values, it was so well-received they are doing it all again! Brand new this year is a mini-market set against the stunning backdrop of Lavender Fields, near Selborne (Saturday 29th July). Local produce to browse and buy includes honey, gin, breads, cakes, fruit and veg. Another exciting newbie is Celebrating Local (Saturday 20th August) at plantbased eco-store Lemon & Jinja - found in a warehouse on a business park in Romsey!

If you enjoy BBQ then we’re your kind of place! With over 30 years’ experience we know a thing or two about it and would love to share our passion with you. In store we stock all the major brands and then some. Come and join us on a Saturday and experience a free demo day or sign up to one of our assorted BBQ Masterclasses. We look forward to seeing y’all soon. Did I mention we stock Yeti? It’s worth dropping in just to view their range! sizzlefest 16 sept 2023 tickets visit sizzlefest.co.uk

Introducing The First Winchester Food Festival

Working with Winchester BID and Winchester Cathedral, the new Winchester Food Festival will be completely FREE to attend and a truly local event –showcasing delicious produce from the Winchester District and wider Hampshire area.

Winchester Food Festival will be held in the Cathedral’s Outer Close, and will open from 10.00am with a Chefs’ Kitchen running from 12 noon. Top chefs from favourite restaurants will be sharing tips and creating tasty recipes using local produce, with the line-up including Damian Brown from Chesil Rectory, Miff Kayum from Kyoto Kitchen, and Lenny Carr-Roberts, of The Bugle, Twyford, The Fox, Crawley, and Shoal, Winchester, who started his career at Le Gavroche, but is probably best known for his television appearances alongside TV Chef James Martin.

Tracy Nash, Hampshire Fare, said: “Winchester Cathedral provides the perfect backdrop to this new FREE festival. We have been wanting to hold a truly local summertime food festival in Winchester for a long time. We are really delighted that so many businesses from across the Winchester District have stepped forward to help us hold what will be a key event in the

Hampshire Food Festival calendar, and a new event for Winchester going forwards.”

Produce will range from superfood micro-greens to locally caught trout and award-winning gins infused with local botanicals. There’s also a big focus on community and green issues with advice from Winchester Beacon, the Festival’s charity partner, on how to make food go further and curb food waste.

“We are delighted to host the inaugural Winchester Food Festival in the Cathedral’s historic grounds and are excited to partner with Hampshire Fare for what, we sincerely hope, will become an annual event in the city’s festival calendar.”

John Blake, Winchester Cathedral

The event is free to attend and has been made possible thanks to much-valued support from local businesses, including Quob Park Free Range & Organic; NFU Mutual Winchester & Wickham; The Winchester Bakery and Shorewood Homes.

“Winchester BID is delighted to be supporting the brand new Winchester Food Festival as part of the Hampshire Food Festival. Winchester is a fantastic place for foodies and this new event will celebrate local producers and businesses in the beautiful setting of Winchester Cathedral. Come along! Visitors can also visit the Hampshire Farmers’ Market and explore the city centre. It will be a fantastic day to be in Winchester!”
