The founder of the brand

The story of our brand HAMPAJ, starts with a little girl at her parent’s workshop, both parents artisans, who, playing, passed on their ancestral knowledge to her, full of values and colors flowing from the roots of the motherland that saw them all grow. The parents, aware of the challenges of their work, wanted a better future for the girl, with no shortages and no heartache, and while they protected her so that she did not feel that pain, they also prepared her for that future they dreamed of. But the girl, in her heart, knew about the shortages, she felt them, they hurt her, and with that she grew. As the years passed, she discovered that her dreams had helped to ease the life of her parents. She understood that dreaming big could help others to live in peace, and with what she learned what she wanted to share with the world.

This dream, together with the love that only a mother can give, makes HAMPAJ a bright light in a previously dark sky.

Everything was born from a dream, the dream of a little girl, the dream of women knitters.

Fair Trade principles

What is Fair Trade? Fair trade consists of a commercial relationship of respect, transparency and mutual interest between small producers and consumers to create work and development opportunities for: the producers, the society and the environment.

For us: "Is an alternative way to conduct business, to conduct it in the right way".

10 principles of Fair Trade you should know:

1. Opportunities for disadvantaged producers

2. Transparency and accountability

3. Fair trade practices

4. Fair payment

5. No child labour and forced labour

6. No discrimination, gender equality, freedom of association

7. Good working conditions

8. Capacity building

9. Promote fair trade

10. Respect for the enviroment

Dionicio lives and works in Huancavelica where he works for himself, supporting his family and other young local weavers. Our goal is to provide Dionicio with greater opportunities through fair treatment and payment for him and everyone who works in his workshop. We do this through the sale of the products they so love to make.

Where we do our products

Huancavelica

THuancavelica, a department in the central part of the Peruvian Andes, is as enigmatic as it is beautiful, and as calm as it is surprising. At every step you take, you discover a reality that almost seems untouched or unexplored and certainly not explored in its full splendor. The landscapes will captivate you, its history will capture you, and its people will fill your soul. Huancavelica is a place where you will feel calm on every day, at every hour.

Founded almost 500 years ago (on August 4, 1571 to be exact), the name of Huancavelica is also the theory behind the community. According to the historian Garcilaso de la Vega, the word uillca was added to the Huanca province, which means “greatness ”

Dionicio, master of weaving on an artisan pedal loom (an ancient technique that he wants to keep alive), lives and works in this extraordinary place. Father, craftsman and teacher, he has been weaving for more than 20 years, including products like scarves, shawls, blankets, ruanas and others.

This is where we have the pleasure of working with Dionicio.

23

In a place between the 3,000-meter-high mountain peaks and the sky, Huancavelica unfolds. Driving from Lima, it takes 11 hours to arrive: 8 by bus, and 3 more by taxi. The temperature frequently drops below 0°C at night, making it an ideal place to raise alpacas.

Hand made process

Created by hand, each piece of our collection requires high skill in weaving, delicacy and following a documented process that allows us to constantly offer high quality in our products. And because our products are completely made by hand, there will always be variations that we verify - during the quality review process - are minimal and do not affect the beauty and quality of them.

These same variations are what make each piece unique and unrepeatable. They are like us, we are all unique.

Let us share our hand made process in 6 steps:

Step 1. Read and understand the technical sheet

Step 2. Prepare and make the alpaca warp on the loom

Step 3. Weave: The transverse alpaca weft is inserted over and under the warp

Step 4. Wash and iron (only when necessary)

Step 5. Label sewing

Step 6. Package

Artisan pedal looms allows us to create unique pieces with an ancestral technique that we want to keep alive.

Raw materials

Alpaca & Baby Alpaca

Alpaca fiber is one of the finest and most luxurious natural fibers in the world that takes care of you and the environment while it feels great on your skin and hands, too. It’s also hypoallergenic, which means is unlikely to cause an allergic reaction in people whose skin is sensitive or tends to get irritated, including babies and young children.

Baby alpaca comes from adult alpaca animals (not from baby animals) and actually received its name "baby alpaca" for its softness, delicacy and shine. If the alpaca is not sheared regularly, its health may be affected.

27

Baby alpaca fiber is also known as the "Gold of the Incas". There is a place in South America, in what we know today as Peru, where a great Inca empire once existed. These Kings of the Andes had incredible textile traditions and hard working people who dressed their kings only with baby alpaca fiber.

Peru is the land of the alpacas and that makes us feel proud as a country that we want to share with the world.
