COMETH THE hOUR...

After such a marvellous record-breaking summer, the inevitable slow but unrelenting encroachment of useable daylight hours somehow seems especially profound this time around…. and that’s even before you consider the unprecedented rises in energy supplies and a cost-of-living crisis which will come knocking on all our doors this winter. Better minds than ours are currently trying to find some light at the end of a very dark tunnel, although no one yet seems to have come up with anything resembling a coherent solution which can be achieved for less than the thick end of a mind-boggling £100 billion pounds.

Well, here’s an idea that will actually cost nothing and might just make a small but significant difference to us all, quite literally in our hour of need. Of course, it’s been mooted and summarily dismissed on many occasions over the past 100 years or so, but has there even been a better time to re-evaluate the whole concept of the “spring forward” and “fall back” notion of British Summer Time (BST)?

It may have been lost in the mists of time itself, but the man who is credited with the implementation of changing the clocks by one hour was actually a builder by the name of William Willet. In 1909 he produced a pamphlet entitled “waste of daylight hours” but his initial idea of four 20-minute increments from April to September was deemed too complicated and defeated in Parliament. However, the outbreak of war and the over dependence on German coal to power lighting saw a revised version of a single hour change passed in 1916. Today, it has been adopted in various guises in a quarter of the developing world.

A century on and with the Russian invasion of Ukraine – and the calamitous impact on energy supplies throughout Europe – it’s easy to draw comparisons with the need for drastic action then as now. In fact, research by Cambridge University several years ago suggested that moving the clocks back 60 minutes would mean more hours are actually spent in darkness while awake and active rather than at sleep, adding to the demand for gas and electricity. They also pointed to the harmful environmental effects this brings, arguing that not moving to Greenwich mean time in winter would reduce our CO2 emissions by at least 500,000 tonnes a year. Without doubt, though, the most compelling point it made was that, at a stroke, it would reduce the average homeowner’s energy bills by around one per cent. Not a lot for now, it’s true, but something that for the foreseeable future is only likely to be heading in one very costly direction.

And, of course, it not just about hard cash. There is also the feel-good factor to consider. It’s a proven fact that the more sunshine we are exposed to, the less miserable and depressed we feel, and goodness knows we could all do with something to cheer the soul right now. Interestingly, the USA passed what it called a Sunshine Protection Act in March of this year eliminating the whole process of clock changing. And what they do invariably washes up on our shores within a few years.

The greatest opposition will, of course, as usual, come from north of the border where the effect of permanent BST would not see the sun rise in the Highlands to past 9.30am in the depths of winter. Yet it’s important to note that three quarters of its population live in its southern counties and, with significantly colder mean time daily temperatures, their inhabitants are more exposed to the icy blast of winter and keeping warm than most.

It’s fair to say that the Government and its new PM have a lot on their plate right now and changes to BST will clearly not be top of their priorities. That particular ship may have already sailed this winter, but with a small change of direction sunnier times for all could yet be on the horizon in the years to come.

PAIN RELIEF

HSE launches campaign to combat serious aches, pains and strains

HSE inspectors will be carrying out inspections in November checking how workers are moving heavy or bulky materials. The law requires employers to prevent the ill health of their workers, which includes injuries to muscles, bones, joints and nerves that can develop over time, known as musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs). However, recent figures show around 40,000 people in the construction industry suffer an MSD each year, which can cause years of agonising aches and pains.

HEALTH CHECK

Healthscreen UK calls for the industry to address working at height issues

In their latest Workplace Fatal Injuries report, the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) revealed that falling from height still remains the predominant cause of fatal injuries and accidents. 29 fatal injuries were caused by falls from height, accounting for 24% of deaths in the workplace over the year. Moreover, the Building Safety Group (BSG) recently reported an 84% increase in the number of working at height breaches occurring on construction sites. The findings also see falling from height account for over 60% of fatal injuries. The main cause of falls from height is ladders, averaging around 515 injuries per year.

REBUILDING LIVES

Lady in Red Plasterer, Naima Ben Moussa, is harnessing her trade skills for a very worthy cause – and inviting other builders to join her. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones talks to the founder of a domestic abuse survivors’ charity

Last year Professional Builder reported on the inspiring story of Naima Ben Moussa, a young spreader who is utilising her plastering skills to help those in need. After she was called in to renovate the home of a domestic abuse victim whose home had sustained significant damage from her partner, she would harness the power of social media in raising over £80,000 to come to the aid of women in a similar predicament, gaining considerable press attention along the way, as well as being nominated for a Trade Hero award and Woman of the Year. Since then, Naima has set up her own charity, Rebuilding Lives UK, which is dedicated to helping domestic abuse survivors to move on with their lives.

Naima explains the vital work that her organisation is undertaking: “I’m managing the jobs, as well as being hands on, and for safety reasons we have to ensure that there are two people working in a survivor’s property at all times. We also have to carry personal alarms with us, carry out detailed risk assessments for every project, as well as ensure that everyone is aware of what to do should a confrontation occur. In addition to repairs, we’re fitting security cameras and new secure locks in properties, as well as working in partnership with other domestic abuse charities, including

Manchester Women’s Aid. In fact, we now have agencies working in the domestic abuse field regularly contacting us asking for support with their cases.”

Making a difference

Even though it is less than a year since its inception, Rebuilding Lives UK has helped sixteen individual women and counting, but Naima has ambitions to extend the scope and reach of the charity still more. “Witnessing what some of these women and their children go through is all the motivation we need to go much further with what we’re doing,” she reveals. “We were recently working on a property where all the doors had

a genuine achievement. A lot of people in these situations feel very alone and trapped. Realising that there are people out there willing to help can be uplifting in itself.”

The picture is made up of a child’s fingerprints, thanking Naima for her work

Naima has developed a network of tradespeople who have been willing to give up their time to work on her vital voluntary work and is eager to recruit more. “We have individuals who come in for just a few hours, and some who give up their weekends. The jobs themselves are more often than not the kind of thing that most general builders could undertake, and we’ve even had retired builders helping us out. Tradespeople who volunteer their services can make a real difference to someone’s life.”

Naima is also developing links with manufacturer’s including British Gypsum,

“We’ve got more and more people coming on board to help us with our work, and they’re raising funds through their own events. The ambition is to develop nationwide coverage so we can help those in need in every part of the country. I’m being contacted all the time by survivors looking for support, so I’m acutely aware of the need and there are tradespeople out there who can make a difference. Our long-term ambition is to refurbish properties that can be used as safe houses and sanctuaries for people fleeing their abusers.”

ROCKING UP!

Rock has evolved naturally over millions of years and has been the standard of construction since the stone age. But in a world where building materials need to work harder than ever, how can manufacturers advance these natural resources further to meet the growing needs of builders and their customers? Paul Barrett, head of product management at Rockwool UK, tells us more about its latest range of products made using NyRock® technology.

QWhat is NyRock?

Paul Barrett (PB) As the name suggests Rockwool insulation is made using diabase rock that’s naturally produced by the earth’s crust. We melt down this rock then spin it on machinery to form a fleece

production processes by, amongst other things, adding new spinners, to make a more efficient fibre structure that’s denser and traps more air. This extra air helps slow the transfer of heat further and means we’ve made a range of insulation with greater thermal performance. In fact, our new range is the most thermally efficient stone wool insulation currently available in the UK.

QWhat products are in the NyRock range?

PB We have two new products that we’re adding to the Rockwool Trade Range:

Thermal Insulation Cavity Slab 032 and Thermal Frame Slab 032.

Q

Why 032?

PB 032 refers to the lambda rating of these products and is measured in Watts

per Metre Kelvin (W/mK). Both Thermal Insulation Cavity Slab 032 and Thermal Frame Slab 032 have a 0.032 W/mK lambda rating.

Lambda, represented by the symbol ‘λ’, is a measure of thermal conductivity –how easily heat passes through a specific material. With insulation, you want a material with low thermal conductivity, so a lower lambda value is better.

On our packaging, you’ll see the different lambda ratings of our products so if you need better thermal performance, look for the lower lambda.

QTell us more about the new products. Where can they be used?

PB Thermal Insulation Cavity Slab 032 is for masonry cavities and can be used in both full fill and partial fill applications.

With its 0.032 W/mK thermal

conductivity value, it’s a great solution to answer the new higher thermal requirements of Approved Document L in England. When you need to achieve a Uvalue of 0.18 W/m²K for example, builders can use 150mm of Thermal Insulation Cavity Slab 032, depending on the wall build up planned, which is 25mm thinner than the standard stone wool cavity products within the same wall build up.

The second product is Thermal Frame Slab 032 that can be used in a variety of external timber and steel applications, including with a brick outer and with or without a service void.

error and also makes it easier to get a snug fit, without gaps through which heat can escape.

Our slabs are also designed to knit together, which again helps with a seamless finish.

– including fire and acoustic performance, and ease of installation – but until now, levels of thermal performance weren’t quite on a par with other popular insulation types, such as glass wool, for example. With these new products, installers can get a new level of thermal performance from stone wool, with all the added benefits that will really appeal to customers and, of course, easy fitting.

Our stone wool insulation is built for the long term with independent research showing it remains effective for the life of the building and, as our slabs have a high density semi-rigid composition, will not slump or sag in the cavity.

PB Not at all. Stone wool

More and more customers, as well as Building Regulations, are rightly focused on ongoing ‘as-built’ so there are big advantages to choosing an insulation that keeps energy requirements lower for years to come.

Stone wool is also able to withstand temperatures in excess of 1,000°C and achieves the highest Euroclass A1 noncombustible reaction to fire classification. Its fibre orientation and increased density also helps to trap sound waves and dampen vibrations, significantly reducing outside noise when used in an external wall.

QDo they need to be installed differently?

RING FENCING THE MARKET!

Professional Builder discovers why Birkdale is the new best mate of the nation’s fencing fraternity

It was the American Poet Robert Frost who first coined the phrase “good fences make good neighbours” and you would be hard pressed to find anyone these past forty years who hasn’t done more to promote that ideal than John Abernethie. The man behind Birkdale, one of the industry’s leading exponents of garden fencing systems, John spent his formative years building the family fencing business before deciding to branch out in 1982 selling a small range of accessories to contractors

to know what the guys on site were routinely up against, and the sort of things which commonly had them pulling their hair out on a regular basis. The choice of fencing options in the UK at that time was fairly limited, of course, but there were some new products and systems out there in the wider world which I was confident could work in what was then –and still is to a certain extent – a very conservative market.”

Continues John: “By 1990 I had taken on my first sales employees and, two years later, we were working closely with suppliers and manufacturers across China and India, leading to our first container of gate hardware. It was the prelude to the

big breakthrough in 1999 with the launch of our own sub-brand, the Gatemate range of basically everything you need to install a garden gate.”

With a new warehouse and office space acquired in 2005, and exports established to the USA and Canada, the “Mate” concept was significantly enhanced with the launch of Fencemate, supplying everything from decorative fittings to decking accessories and railing systems, and Sitemate, which offers a comprehensive selection of specialist

heavy concrete posts and gravel boards and that’s before you have spent back breaking hours digging the post holes and concreting them in. Traditionally, most of the guys are pretty worn out by their fifties but, thanks to new labour saving innovations, it doesn’t have to be this way for the next generation.

“In 2018, for instance, we came up with DuraPost, a simple yet highly effective lightweight galvanised steel fence post and gravel board system which, at around 75 per cent the weight of concrete, takes away so much of the hard graft. Not only that, it is extremely durable and, used in conjunction with a variety of traditional timber and composite finishes in a variety of colours, it is an attractive proposition for homeowners looking to upgrade their properties. It has the potential to completely revolutionise the industry because the feedback from contractors trying it for the first time has been 100 per cent positive in all respects. And, perhaps most importantly, their customers are delighted to have something which is the envy of their neighbours, and is guaranteed to last for at least 25 years and will withstand winds up 110 mph,” enthuses John.

In 2018 the company scaled up its own premises, moving to purpose-built offices in Stokenchurch, Bucks, where newly installed, perfectly manicured gardens are a showpiece for the complete Mate range.

Enthuses Fenton Rowles, Head of Sales and Marketing at Birkdale: “The new site enables us to develop and install an ever growing range of fencing systems and options in real life situations, which potential customers can come and see in situ. It’s also home for our DuraPost Trained Installer Scheme, which is expected to really take off again post covid. There is also an app, FenceBuilder, to assist contractors and homeowners in visualising the final effect when specifying projects.” Like noisy neighbours, no wonder their competitors are anxiously peering over the fence,

“DuraPost is a simple yet highly effective lightweight galvanised steel post and gravel board system that takes away the hard graft”

TOP OF THE GRASS !

Artificial grass gets a bad rep in the mainstream media from those who don’t understand its benefits over and above real grass. There are a number of different circumstances in which fake grass provides both good quality and quick fire results for that immediate wow factor, as well as long term, maintenance free benefits for your customers.

These areas can be small external areas such as roof gardens and terraces; play areas in schools and nurseries; landscaping in and around commercial buildings, domestic gardens; awkward, difficult to reach patios or outside seating in a bar or restaurant.

Synthetic grass has come a long way quality-wise over the last decade or so with a variety of options available that can be selected according to need and use. These include good quality standard products to the more expensive, top of the range varieties – and these options look so realistic you would never know it was fake grass until you got up close and personal.

The Artificial Lawn Company does have one significant piece of advice for

the trade. “Never go for the cheapest option,” said director Neil Sweeting. “A low-grade fake lawn product does not have the same durable properties as its better quality, more established varieties. It will degrade much more quickly and end up costing more in the long term.”

Although more expensive than laying real turf, once laid there are minimal maintenance requirements, and the grass will not be prone to wear and tear in areas of particularly busy footfall. In fact, all ALC lawns come with a standard 10

“Artificial grass is not there to replace real grass, but as a viable alternative in the right circumstances,” continues Neil, “and as a material it has been in existence since the 1960s. Research and development has ensured that manufacturers embrace the use of recycled materials, advanced production techniques and superior performance. There’s a reason why Google searches for artificial grass increased 185% month on month in the spring of 2020 – there continues to be a real demand for a product that is a low maintenance alternative to grass, without compromising on the aesthetics.”

Durable solution

This summer has been one of unusually hot temperatures. Gardens and lawns around the UK are parched and yellow, and it’s turning our small island into a tinder box. For those who have opted for a synthetic lawn, their outlook is as green as the day it was laid. Hosepipe bans will not affect the overall aesthetics of an artificial lawn and, of course, require no watering helping the environment and

saving on bills.

One legacy of the Covid age is that the UK has developed a more ‘outdoor’ culture when it comes to al fresco eating and drinking – in fact, we are positively European now (just with a pint glass rather than a litre one). In the hospitality industry, temporary legislative changes were brought in to make it quicker, easier and cheaper for businesses to get a licence to serve food and drink on pavements and pedestrianised roads. This summer, the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities has extended this legislation until it becomes permanent next spring.

As a result, more and more town and city centre hostelries are looking to establish semi-permanent indoor/outdoor areas which automatically increase their commercial footprint, giving them the opportunity to recoup the massive losses they made over the last couple of years.

These areas experience heavy footfall from both customers and staff alike, so a high performing durable ground covering will give a much higher return on the establishment’s initial investment. And in an area where food and drink are being

water and detergent will bring the al fresco zone back up to scratch in minutes.

Roof terraces, patio areas, awkward corners – with a little bit of imagination, and a better understanding of the versatility, durability and applications of a good quality artificial lawn can significantly extend the portfolio of solutions in outdoor (and in some circumstances indoor) refurbishment and renovation projects.

In schools and nurseries, artificial lawns are commonplace for play areas. As well as its ability to withstand the constant testing of little feet, there are no repercussions for those kids who have allergies or hay fever. Additionally, the area stays clean and mud free throughout the winter months. “Used responsibly, artificial grass will continue to play a major role in providing floor coverings for a wide variety of uses,” concluded Neil Sweeting.

ABOUT TONY

Having worked on the tools for 30 years, Tony is an experienced painter and decorator with knowledge to share. After completing his painting and decorating apprenticeship, Tony worked for a commercial painting company for 10 years before starting up his own business. After 20 years of running his own show, Tony decided to give back to the industry that he loves and join the Dulux Academy team.

As a Skills Development Consultant at the Dulux Academy, Tony is responsible for instilling his passion and skills in those that attend his courses. For over six years, attendees have benefitted from his expertise and real-world experience – and learnt how to put the theory into practice both at the Dulux Academy and on-site.

Tony said: “There are a lot of perks to my job, but the main one for me is seeing course attendees leave with a newfound confidence and spring in their step. In a lot of cases, people attend Dulux Academy courses because they have tried their hand at decorating but can’t quite nail a certain aspect of the job. Seeing that skill suddenly click into place and the grin on people’s faces when they achieve the result that they’ve been striving for is so lovely to see – and it’s why I love doing what I do.”

THINK BEFORE YOU DIG

When it comes to electricity cables it could well be one strike and you’re out. UK Power Networks is urging builders to be aware of the dangers. Professional Builder’s Lee Jones investigates.

We’ve all been there. Under pressure to finish the job, or just get home, there’s always the temptation to compromise on safety – but a moment’s carelessness can all too easily lead to a lifetime of regret. Many of the dangers we are accustomed to on site have the virtue of being visible, but underground power networks are hidden hazards and require proper planning to be avoided. Similarly, overhead cables may be well out of our ground-level line of sight, but in each instance an unexpected encounter by a builder can have devastating consequences, with serious burns or even a fatality the result.

not only life-changing injuries but a prolonged period of recuperation, and the financial implications that inevitably incurs

for them and their families. If you’re an employer who has failed to properly protect a member of staff then the legal sanctions could be ruinous, not to mention the reputational damage to your business.

Avoidable issue

UK Power Networks distributes electricity to 8.4 million homes and business across London, the south-east and east of England. Every year it reports that tradespeople, particularly those working on smaller house builds, extensions and refurbishment projects, are involved in wholly avoidable cable strikes – but help is at hand.

Its Be Bright, Stay Safe campaign is urging builders to think before they dig, and to look up and look out for overhead

UK Power Networks is available for advice. Any emergency incident or damaged cable can be reported by dialing 105, and the organisation also provides a whole range of educational resources. To access these

can be easily obtained from both UK Power Networks itself and Line Search Before You Dig (LSBUD).

The precautions don’t end there, however, because underground cables don’t always travel in straight lines and their depth can vary. Get into the habit of using a cable avoidance tool (CAT) when excavating – or drilling into party walls, floors and roof spaces, where electrical services might be running – and make sure you and your team know how to use CAT equipment properly. If necessary, dig trial holes, don’t use mechanical excavators or power tools within 0.5metres of an identified power line, and make sure cables are clearly marked before digging.

Communicate

Communication is key and every trade working on the job should be made aware of the location of cables and where services enter a building – but don’t take their word for it. Always undertake your

own checks and never assume that the power has been disconnected – consider them live until you have established otherwise, and always make sure that the electricity has been disconnected before carrying out any demolition work. Delivery drivers should be made aware of the location of overhead power lines, especially if they are handling long items like scaffold poles, or operating grab lorries or mobile elevated work platforms.

Any builder will know that the success of a job depends in no small part on forward planning. Every year tradespeople are killed or injured as a result of completely avoidable power cable strikes. Putting the necessary procedures in place to avoid the electricity network before you’ve broken ground, or wielded a power tool in anger, will not only improve your efficiency, it could well save a life.

Earlier this year there were alarming news stories about new legislation that was set to ban paved driveways, sending builders and homeowners in a spin about future plans and developments. But whilst there was a slight link to the truth in what was written, the headlines were misleading. In this article, we look at the actual rules for driveways, highlighting the importance of understanding the detail on drainage and providing the best solution for the area you’re working in.

Why does driveway legislation exist?

The issue is about flooding. As you’ll well know, any hard surfaces, such as a paved driveway, can stop rainwater soaking into the ground. When this happens, the rain instead flows into council-owned drainage systems, or similar, often at high speed and in large volumes. Because climate change is causing rainfall to become more frequent and more intense, and we’re also seeing more hard-paved areas, our drainage systems are struggling to cope. Driveway legislation is in place to stop people from adding to the flooding problem by paving over porous ground in front of their house – but that doesn’t mean that driveways are being banned! The legislation instead advises people

LET’S DRIVE!

who are changing their driveways to take simple, often cost-neutral measures to manage the water on their own land, instead of directing it to shared sewers –effectively, using sustainable drainage systems to create driveways that don’t increase the risk of flooding.

What do the rules say?

The current rules have been in place across the UK since 2008. In simple terms, any new driveway over 5m2 must provide a drainage system for the water to run to a permeable area or use permeable materials. If it doesn’t, then the homeowner

will need to get planning permission. Guidance that can be found on gov.uk, states that: “you will not need planning permission if a new or replacement driveway of any size uses permeable (or porous) surfacing, such as gravel, permeable concrete block paving or porous asphalt, or if the rainwater is directed to a lawn or border to drain naturally.”

If you’re installing driveways in existing or new build homes, it’s worth getting to grips with the detail on the rules so you can simplify them for customers and ensure that they’re taking the right steps to avoid issues further down the line.

Marshalls explains how you can use drainage to meet driveway regulations
Driveline drain installation

How can I ensure my projects comply with the rules?

As the gov.uk quote states, there are a few options for creating new driveways that meet the legislation, and they still allow for the choice and creativity that many of today’s customers are looking for.

Soakaways

Most simply, the rainwater can be directed to run off from hard paving into soft planted areas, where it can soak naturally into the ground. All that needs to be done to achieve this is to build a gentle slope on the driveway in the direction the water needs to flow, ensuring that the slope falls away from the public pavement or highway.

Channel drains

Another solution is to install a channel drain along the entrance to a driveway. A channel drain redirects the water before it goes onto the road, directing it instead to a “soakaway” which is within the property boundary.

What is a soakaway?

A soakaway is a hole which fills up with water that soaks away over time.

Traditionally, people have been keen to avoid adding ugly drainage to beautiful new spaces, but times have changed and suppliers have created more subtle options. New solutions, such as Marshalls

Driveline Drain, are manufactured from concrete and are much more attractive than metal or plastic alternatives, while complying with government legislation. The drains can be installed easily, without compromising on style or design.

Permeable paving

And finally, there is another solution; permeable block paving which looks like any other block-paved surface. Permeable paving is specially designed to allow water to soak through the surface and into the ground below, stopping rainwater from entering sewers without the need for any soft landscaping, drainage channels, or soakaways. It’s also hard wearing and able to withstand the heavy loads.

Are there any other rules for driveways?

Not drainage related, but if you’re working in a Conservation Area, there will be additional factors to consider regarding materials and design. Your customer is likely to offer this information at the start of the project, but it’s always worth asking the question if the property appears to be in a heritage area.

In summary

If you’re installing a new driveway over 5m2 and your customer is keen to avoid seeking planning permission, you must share the rules and regulations with them. The choice of drainage comes down to

the space and style of the driveway you’re working with, and you’ll also want to take into account additional measures if you’re working in an area of high flood risk. If you’re working with materials that are new to you, take advantage of supplier expertise and do your research too.

ON YOUR ‘METAL’

Whilst there might be considerable deliberation on the choice of windows, doors and render, a building’s rainwater system is often something of a poor relation. At the same time, its impact on a property’s façade should not be underestimated, where it can make a telling contribution to that all important kerb appeal. It is here that builders can play their part in championing solutions that have inherent benefits in longevity, appearance and performance – and the extensive Rainclear Systems product range is on hand to support them.

Today, every builder is in the sustainability business and that means an appreciation of the whole lifecycle of product. Unlike their plastic counterparts, for example, metal rainwater systems are not petrochemical-based. Waste aluminium, cast iron, steel, copper or zinc all have an inherent scrap value, which makes it cost effective to recycle even relatively small amounts, where many plastic recycling centres are only set up to process that material in bulk.

At the same time, metal has a much longer life and will not suffer from UV degradation – as some plastics can. Indeed, in the case of copper and zinc solutions, the aesthetic will actually

improve over time, with the former gradually transitioning from a dark, earthy colour to the distinctive verdigris patina much sought after by homeowners.

Aesthetic choice

It is the design possibilities of different metals which also sets them apart. The look of galvanised steel or zinc is in synergy with more overtly modern designs, for example, and there are many more options besides. Indeed, when it comes to Rainclear Systems’ Infinity branded galvanised steel – in addition to the plain galvanised version itself – there are seven colour-coated finishes available. If the client wants the rainwater system to seamlessly integrate or match with render, roof or window & door colours they can also make use of a matching service where virtually any finish can be achieved.

On period properties cast iron can be installed on the basis of a like for like replacement – and may well be obligatory as far as conservation officers are concerned – but the story doesn’t end

there either. Rainclear Systems was actually the first to market with prepainted cast iron, and there are now seven factory applied colours, but there is also the option for cast iron rainwater systems to be supplied with transit priming, which allows an installer to paint it any colour the client specifies. Cast aluminium is a lighter alternative on heritage projects – whilst maintaining that all-important character – and samples can be supplied for the purposes of approval.

The durability of metal rainwater systems is clearly a huge selling point, with the galvanised steel that Rainclear Systems supplies enjoying a manufacturer guarantee of 15 years. In many locations, however, this could easily be extended to a lifetime of 25 years, especially if it’s colour coated. Aluminium lasts still longer with a 25-40 year expectancy. Copper and zinc is good for anything from 50-100

years, whilst cast iron guttering of more than 100 years vintage exists in situ up and down the country and, if it is regularly painted, can easily go beyond that grand old, threefigure age.

If you think that the process of fitting metal is inherently more complex then think again. The galvanised steel, copper, and natural zinc solutions that encompass the Infinity brand, can all be cut with a hacksaw, in just the same way that plastic would be, and a general builder of any competence can easily handle an installation. Rainclear Systems is eager to educate the industry on the simplicity of its solutions and supplies

a range of resources for tradespeople, including installation guides and videos – and these can be viewed here:

In

the subtle grey and pitted shade of Rainclear Systems’ pre-weathered Quartz Zinc is popular, but it is the metallic qualities of a natural zinc product that will tone down in time that remains the star turn amongst the public. Using metal as a complement to timber cladding –where the materials can age together – is equally in vogue.

Rainclear Systems’ galvanised steel solutions are the closest in price to plastic and the latter currently represents over 70 per cent of the UK market. That means there is a huge opportunity for metal rainwater systems in residential settings, where its longevity, visual appeal, and environmental credentials are ideally suited to any either traditional or contemporary projects.

ON THE THRESHOLD

A combination of the company’s successful Linear Bar and C250 Wave grating design, the DEKS DekDrain Threshold provides what the manufacturer describes as both a sleek designer look and superior water capture.

What do you want from your threshold drain? Would you like a drain that looks great by design? A product that performs for its intended use? Then, DekDrain Threshold is the answer to your drainage dream.

look of your front door –performing to capture water across its length without allowing water to traverse.

You would want a drain that has significantly more open area to enable water to flow in without the risk of crossing the grating into the property. Even better a grating that prevents heels becoming stuck in it. And ideally, the drain will incorporate a bottom channel profile that is “D” Shaped not flat, which ensures every last drop of water drains to the point of discharge, and you can maintain it with ease.

If water runs towards your door, and the drain you have selected holds that water above ground for any reason, it poses risks, including ponding, ice, silt, and moss build that can cause slips and accidents outside your door. An efficient drain does not do this by ensuring the

water is stopped in its tracks, and disperses it into the drain – not the surrounding area.

It is installed to provide a drain in front of non-stepped access to properties, and is located in front of doors at the threshold. The drain design benefits from a wavestyle grating, which disrupts the flow of water, maximises water-flow, ensures selfcleaning and minimises blockages.

The silky smooth dry weather channel design provides the ultimate self-cleansing through increased flow. With a sleek quad box, it provides quick access, as well as to turn corners without cutting or buying extra expensive components if required.

The quad box is included in the kit as well as a bottom connector (for 100/110mm underground drainage) and two end caps. Other systems don’t come as a kit meaning the purchase of multiple items is required. The Dekdrain Threshold kit saves time and money whilst providing the assured quality from an EN1433 product.

Heel Shield slots enable you to walk over the drain with any shoe type without fear of trapped heels, with easily removable clip in gratings.

DekDrain Threshold is packaged in an easy to purchase kit with one length channel and A15 Wave Grating, as well as an access box, end caps and an underground bottom clip in connector.

DekDrain Edge

DEKS has also brought a cost effective metal edge slot drain to the domestic patio and driveway market, with a product that has recently been upgraded to B125 loading capability up from A15.

The DekDrain Edge provides a look that would have only previously be possible with more expensive full steel products. Each slot wall is capped with an attractive square faced, visible, nonrusting, polished aluminium edge for that finishing touch.

Additionally, Edge is a substitute for use as a Threshold Drain, finishing off the connect between hard landscaping and

property. The 82mm upstand ensures the paving has enough space for a securing bed of mortar to fix and forget with no need to trim the back edge off pavers. Featuring an overall height of just 167mm (<2 brick courses), Edge will sit above the concrete slab with ease. Excavation time is optimised to offer you savings on installation.

The product’s ovoid shape creates a dry weather channel which ensures water flows better. This acts as a self-cleansing agent, reducing maintenance, risk of blockages and cleaning. In addition the access quadbox gives you discreet access for washing out silt when necessary.

COVER STORY

Reflecting the need to accommodate a range of flooring finishes, including popular porcelain paving –which has seen a recent surge in demand –Wrekin Products has launched

a new range of triple seal aluminium recess access covers and frames. Available to the trade through merchants nationwide, the range of 27mm standard depth aluminium covers and frames have been “designed with performance and

Wrekin has also recently launched a brand-new range of Grade B surface boxes. A significant number of surface boxes are made of plastic and are part of a four-piece chamber system involving a tap chamber base, guard tube, sleeve and surface box.

However, a brand-new innovation from Wrekin combines the surface box and sleeve into one unit. These two parts of the system have been identified as the most prone to breaking so the combined alternative serves to remove the need for replacements, saving time in parts sourcing and minimising embodied carbon.

aesthetics in mind”.

According to the company, this means that contractors do not have to compromise on the demands of either, due to the “strong, corrosion-resistant aluminium finish which blends in seamlessly with the surrounding flooring” whilst also protecting against odour and egress. This is in addition to preventing dirt and contaminants penetrating — which the supplier says is all thanks to the clever integrated neoprene triple seal solution.

Paul Shaw, Director of Fabricated Steel at Wrekin, explains: “The added benefit of aluminium is that it is a cost-effective alternative to stainless steel, which can be four to five times more expensive. It is also highly compatible with different types of floorings, including popular porcelain paving, so we are really pleased to be able to offer competitive alternatives for the industry at large and their customers that can tick so many boxes.”

He continued: “Not forgetting how high performance this range is, the three integrated triple seal solution ensures resistance to gas, water, and grit ingress.”

Coming ready packed with threaded keys for easy lifting through screw holes, the range is suitable for both internal and outdoor specifications across a variety of sectors, including residential, education, health, leisure, and retail.

Commercial Director Simon Turner added: “We have been able to invest in this product due to strengthening our manufacturing supply chains to meet market demand. So far, take up of the aluminium recess covers has been fantastic and we look forward to maintaining our strong distribution network.

OUT FOR A DRIVE

Picture this – you’ve arrived on site, measured the area of a worn tarmac or concrete driveway and given your client the price. We both know the hefty price tag associated with these types of projects. But your customer becomes astounded by the price and has a smaller budget in mind that wouldn’t even cover the cost of the driveway surface, never mind your time. Luckily, Beauxfort has been innovating around this solution.

Creativity always prevails John Ridgeway Construction encountered a similar problem on site. The worn, tarmac driveway was desperate to be replaced. However, the homeowners didn’t have the budget to strip and replace the tarmac.

Instead, John recommended they install a Gravelrings overlay system. The top priority for the busy family household was a practical driveway –a surface that will withstand pushing and pulling by children’s bikes and recycling bins. Therefore, a strong, stable surface that is budgetfriendly was the remedy for this problem.

Loose gravel surfaces are notorious for rutting and sinking. However, laying Gravelrings beneath will prevent an uneven surface from forming. The moulded

“You can lay metres within minutes –170sqm took under two days to lay. Whereas alternatives, like block paving, can take 10-12 days”. Furthermore, there is no need for excavation. The grids are simply laid upon the existing surface and drilled into place with an electric nail gun. To finish the grids are backfilled with gravel.

John’s client was overjoyed with the finished result: “We are impressed by the solid, secure feel of the system, with no movement of the stones even with threepoint turns. We now have a driveway that we are proud of and which has received complimentary comments”.

Why Gravelrings?

Gravel driveways have a reputation for suffering from gravel migration but this is not a problem any longer. Modern-day product innovation has led to Gravelrings

being the first gravel grid of its kind to penetrate the marketplace. Furthermore, by being formed of circular cells the gravel is held in place, unable to migrate and create sparse areas. A closed cell system is vital in preventing stone from moving because it is compacted tight into the system to form a hard, stable surface.

Often seen as an extra expense on the proposal, Gravelrings has an abundance of cost-saving benefits. Making it a worthwhile investment for any client that wants a durable driveway. The system is 25mm deep, an overlooked cost saving for both contractor and homeowner.

Gravel is a huge strain on project expenses.

With Gravelrings, less gravel is needed to fill the system. By eliminating gravel migration, less material is lost to forces pushing stones into the road and getting caught in tyre grooves. This reduces maintenance costs since gravel does not need to be topped up as often.

Sustainability is high on the development agenda. Therefore, using recycled materials has become of increasing importance to reduce waste. Black Gravelrings are made from 100% recycled UV stabilised HDPE and are recyclable at the end of life. However,

drainage, water management & groundworks 38 I NOVEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER
The Beauxfort Gravelrings overlay system will save time and costs on driveway projects

white Gravelrings are made from partrecycled material. Black Gravelrings are made from white Gravelrings after they have been melted down and re-moulded.

The cost of using an open cell system

We get it. There are numerous gravel grids on the market. Maybe your customer has gone online and found a cheaper gravel grid. But no one talks about the hidden cost of an open cell system.

Open cell systems fail in their function. The grids cannot contain gravel as no

structure holds them in place. This means gravel migration is inevitable. Without a

with time. When this occurs the only course of action to remedy this problem is to relay the gravel driveway. An upset client and a potential hit to your reputation could be in order too. In the long run, this costs your client more since a closed-cell gravel grid would have to be laid to correct the problem.

Always test first It’s important for both contractors and homeowners to feel they’ve made the right choice and that it all starts with confidence in the product and innovation used. Many contractors feel that sampling the products before they purchase large quantities mitigates the risk. Having confidence in the delivery and reputation is key in these testing times to securing future growth.

Anew electric van with a one tonne load capacity for around £20,000 plus VAT?

OK, so that includes the Government’s £5,000 plug-in-van grant but even so, at that price, let’s be honest, it probably raises as many red flags as green ones, especially since all of its contemporaries are approaching twice that – and some considerably more so.

By now you will have probably guessed that the new DFSK EC 35 is not a name that instantly springs to mind when thinking about light commercial vehicles. In fact, Innovation Automation was set up as recently as 2021 by a vastly experienced team of ex Mitsubishi

motoring personnel to import a range of Chinese-built electric vehicles which, in their own words, “will help to ease business through the important transition from internal combustion to electric power.” Breaking with convention it aims to do this through direct sales rather than a dealer network although, interestingly, servicing will be handled by local Halfords Autocentres. There’s a five-year 75,000mile warranty, and battery for eight years, with AA road cover for three years included in the purchase price.

It’s fair to say we haven’t always enjoyed the best of experiences with vans from the far east. Who will ever forget the Great Wall pick up? Which

TAKE IT EC!

proved to be anything but. That left our car park on a low loader, and it wasn’t the only one which failed to last the course of being driven in our own special builder’s way for a week or so. We also borrowed an original petrol DFSK with the incongruous looking BMW grille many moons ago and that left us, like the vehicle itself, largely unmoved. The world, and especially the global vehicle market, is a very different beast than back then, of course, and in terms of electric technology the Chinese are now recognised as the leading exponents of alternative automotive power.

One thing that hasn’t changed, however, is the impression that vehicles from this part of the world have come straight out of Trumpton (ask your parents). At just 1.7m wide and 4.5m long, the tyres on the new EC are not the only thing which could be referred to as skinny, although first impressions can be deceptive because –despite the high load bed to accommodate the battery pack –inside there is a very respectable medium-sized van payload of over a tonne. This is accessed through dual sliding side doors and an up and over

vehicles & plant 44 I NOVEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER

tailgate. Another peculiarity amongst its contemporaries here, is the rear-wheeldrive element, which in theory should aid loaded traction.

Our version was the limited to 62mph top speed model, which has a modest range of 100 miles whilst the limited 50mph version claims to offer around 160mpg. One imagines fully laden and inclement British weather will, like all electric vehicles, take a significant toll on those figures, but the 39kW battery can be charged in around six hours at home or 90 minutes on a rapid charging unit.

So that’s the modern bit accounted for. The rest is really a bit like stepping back in time with creature comforts and safety assurances stripped right back to its ladder frame chassis, which is only seen these days on some pick-up trucks and top of the range Iveco’s. It does give it a strong base to build from but don’t expect anything like the driving experience which we now take for granted from some of the bigger players.

There’s no electronic stability control, which is highly unusual these days, and the interior is cheap and equipped to a budget end price, with only one trim level and a limited number of accessories. You do get a large-ish touchscreen infotainment system, rear parking sensors and reversing camera, but we were left somewhat bemused by an unnecessary analogue rev counter which somewhat disconcertingly seems to spend most of its time in the red. We would also prefer an exact indication of miles left in the ‘tank’ rather than a state of diminishing battery charge.

And, talking of battery, we come to the biggest – and certainly most usual in electric vehicle terms – bugbear of cabin

noise. Whenever you get behind the wheel of an electric vehicle the most striking aspect of the whole experience is the sound of silence. So much so that it takes a while to actually know whether you are good to go. Not so with the EC. There is a very audible whirring noise from the get-go, right up to 25mph when whatever is responsible, and one assumes it is the battery pack itself, switches into another mode and you are left with nothing more than the sound of the wind rushing by.

Safety first

In the interests of fairness, we asked the company for clarification on this matter and in their own words: “The DFSK EC 35 is built with pedestrian safety in mind.

environments and busy places of work. DFSK has, therefore, gone above the industry norm of standard pedestrian warning systems, increasing tone output, and extending the maximum speed at which the tone operates to 25mph. As well as protecting pedestrians it gives EC 35 drivers added piece of mind, whatever the environment.” All very worthy, of course, but likely to fall on deaf ears for those who spend any length of time behind the wheel at low urban speeds. New EU rules will make an audible pedestrian warning noise mandatory on all electric vehicles up to 12mph so, at the very least, one would hope that the Innovation Automation people might have a strong word with their Chinese suppliers to significantly reduce the current setting.

We often talk about horses for courses when making van selections that are right for your business, so in the case of the EC 35 it’s not unreasonable, perhaps, to suggest that it is very firmly in the one trick pony category. If you work locally –perhaps as a painter & decorator, joiner, or electrician – without the need for bulky materials on a regular basis and want to make an environmental statement about your business, then at the price this EV is worth a look. Customers are increasingly attracted to those tradespeople displaying good green credentials and this is a vehicle which will certainly attract attention, although not always, it has to be said, for the best reasons.

For the vast majority of builders, however, the EC 35 is unlikely to leave them green with envy just yet.

and LOAD

With thousands of pounds worth of tools, equipment and material stored in our vans, it’s no surprise that these work vehicles are a target for unscrupulous opportunists in the area.

With reports from Comparethemarket.com estimating that 12,000 vans will be stolen in 2022, a rise of 169% over the last five years, it’s no surprise that trade professionals are becoming increasingly conscious of their van security.

And the latest research has shown that it’s not just the vehicles that are a prime target for thieves. With 67% of break-ins resulting in stolen tools, 55.6% leading to stolen equipment such as ladders, and 41.7% seeing the loss of other personal items, the security experts at Yale are asking the trade to step up their vehicle security as we approach the winter months.

Firstly, Yale would recommend investing in a high security van lock to not only protect your van and its contents, but also to deter would-be criminals. And responding to these current threats surrounding vehicle security, the company has recently unveiled its new Heavy Duty Van Lock.

Designed with heightened security in mind, the new release has been tested to

British Standards EN12320:2012 to ensure it can protect against a range of attack methods. Alongside corrosion resistance for extreme weather conditions, the Heavy Duty Van Lock benefits from a hardened steel body, and 6-pin cylinder, ensuring trade professionals can protect their livelihood, whilst offering the ultimate peace of mind.

Sound the alarm

In the unlikely event that a criminal was to gain access to a van after securing it with the Heavy Duty Van Lock, it’s also worth securing any tools, materials or expensive equipment inside.

Tradespeople could consider fixing down valuable equipment with a security cable and maximum-security padlock to offer protection against a range of attack methods and to keep items secure when driving.

Yale’s Wireless Alarm is another handy gadget to ensure van owners are clued up about the security of their vehicle and valuables stored inside. With motion detection alerts and a loud 100dB siren, the Wireless Alarm can be installed in next to no time, notifying van owners if their vehicle is being tampered with or

broken into.

After securing their van and its contents, trade professionals can also ensure they can keep an eye on their vehicle from anywhere at any time by investing in a smart security camera. Whether their van is kept on a driveway, or on the street outside their home, by cleverly positioning a smart outdoor security camera in the direction of the vehicle, it’s easy to always be ‘in the know’ over their van’s security.

The same manufacturer’s Allin-One Camera is a handy option, with 1080P camera quality, a 110-degree viewing angle and 10m infrared nightvision allowing you to keep an eye on your van from anywhere via a smartphone with the Yale View app. With a built-in security light, users can view real-time footage of the outside of their home at any time of the day or night, alongside motion-detection alerts to ensure they’re the first to know about any suspicious activity happening close by.

With van theft expected to increase to a staggering 20,000 vans per year by 2030, security experts Yale are continuing to stress the importance of improved van security to trade professionals, and the manufacturer has an extensive range of solutions.

HOT ON THE TRAILEr

Over the past few years, British industry has been battling supply chain issues.

The problem has been compounded by a series of factors; Covid 19 closed factories and borders which stalled production and cross-border trade; adapting to Brexit created additional admin, uncertainty and delays; the knockon effect caused lorry driver shortages; and now war in Ukraine has spiked a surge in oil prices.

Each factor, having occurred in quick succession over the past few years, has combined to create a backlog in production and deliveries. The demand has increased, the supply has decreased, and so the costs have escalated. It now costs more and takes longer to bring products and components into the UK, the effects of which are now burdening every UK industry, business, and household.

Towing the line

One solution to this comes in the simple form of road-trailers, the workhorse of British commerce. The UK recently relaxed its laws on who could tow a road trailer with a gross weight of 3.5 tonnes. These trailers are typically utilised by a range of industry professionals, from construction and groundworks, to farming

and horticulture. Older generations had grandfather rights to tow such trailers on their existing licence, but the younger generations had to take a separate test. Given that test centres were at capacity during covid, trying to get as many lorry drivers through their tests as possible, the government decided to return legislation back to that of previous generations, and allow people to once again tow these types of trailers on their existing licence.

The problem did not stop there, however. Trailer manufacturers suffered from the same issues that haunted every other industry – supply and demand. The trailer manufacturers simply could not get hold of the right materials at the right price or within the right time frame. Even now, if you call up one of the leading UK brands to order a trailer you’ll be waiting until the beginning of 2024 for your order.

One UK company, however, is doing things differently. Prior to the pandemic, HM-D Trailers supplied road-legal tiny house trailers to the UK market. These trailers are used to build mobile structures on –from houses on wheels to mobile food kiosks to portable shower units. As events unfolded, HM-D Trailers decided to lock-in its agreement with suppliers to maintain production and broadened its offering to provide plant & machinery solutions as well.

Build quality

The quality of HM-D Trailers gives the leading UK brands a run for their money. Not only are they double-dip galvanised and come with a 5-year chassis warranty, but if HM-D doesn’t have your trailer currently in stock at their depot, then they are currently averaging four weeks in order to fulfil customer’s orders. The company also offers a buy-back scheme on old HM-D Trailers, accepts part

exchange on a case-by-case basis, and offers long term rentals to businesses who would prefer to reduce their capital outlay. While HGVs and lorries have their place, a significant number of UK businesses and sole-traders rely on trailers every day to transport materials

All models have a full set of lights connected via a 13 pin plug, and are braked. The trailers are very lightweight, but can carry heavy payloads, giving them an impressive strength to weight ratio. The units come with a spare wheel and wheel holder as standard. HM-D Trailers

“We started HM-D Trailers when we found it difficult to source the trailers we needed for our tiny house on wheels project. We just couldn’t find a road-legal trailer with a large enough platform area combined with a superb strength to weight ratio. When we realised that others were having the same problem we set about solving the issue. We subsequently branched into supplying plant and machinery trailers, and the rest is history. HM-D Trailers now provides a range of immediately available, high quality trailers, and our strategy enables us to significantly reduce waiting times to get businesses moving again. We’ve reduced bottlenecks and businesses can now get on with the job.”

MINi MARVELS

This year Kubota is celebrating 25 consecutive years as the number one mini excavator manufacturer in the UK. Add to that a record year on these shores for the company in 2022 and it is clear that the reliability, performance and residual values of the Japanese firm’s machines are striking a chord with its considerable customer base.

“The sentiment among our dealers is that the market remains very strong,” enthuses Rob. “Indeed, over the last couple of years the post covid landscape has seen demand well in excess of supply. There’s no doubt that component issues, and raw material disruptions from the war in Ukraine, has led to longer lead times but this does appear to be easing slightly. At the moment we’re forecasting we’ll need more machines next year than in 2023, and that’s a testament to the underlying strength of the construction sector.”

Maintaining that preeminent position demands new solutions and this year that has included a new Kubota Tracking

system. The portal allows real time data on location, performance and maintenance issues to be accessed via a smartphone, tablet or PC. GPS tracking enhances security by pinpointing the exact whereabouts whilst geofencing alerts will notify of any unauthorised movements. There’s a wealth of data at your fingertips, including fuel consumption, work rate, and machine

errors all of which can reduce downtime and increase productivity.

“It’s something that our customers have been asking for and our telematics system has the virtue of being designed in-house,” continues Rob, “which means

subscription on the 8, and 5 tonne units initially, with the 4-tonne machine added early in 2023. In addition, the Kubota data can be feed into an end user’s existing telematics platform so that all the information on a mixed fleet is in one location.”

Micro excavators

The 1.5 to 2.5 tonne segment represents Kubota’s high-volume solutions in this country and new additions to the range were introduced last year. More and more small builders are seeing the wisdom of investing in their own plant rather than hiring and, with track widths that are adjustable to just 0.7m on the new K0085, and 0.75m on the zero-tail swing, U105, both units are eminently suited to digging out the footings on a compact residential extension job, for example.

Add to that the promise of high powerto-weight ratio, good all-round vision, and low ground impact and these Stage V machines can access more places than ever before. The U10-5 is equipped with a convenient side lever joystick and both models feature an upgraded environment for the operator, including more legroom. Other features as standard include engine safety start, an expanded control lock system, highly visible orange seat belt and alarm, alongside green beacon capability and LED boom lights.

Further up the weight scale there have also been three relatively recent additions in the 5-tonne category – the KX060-5, U56-5 and U50-5, providing a choice of either a reduced tail swing or conventional model. The U56-5 is, in fact, the largest reduced tail swing machine in

the Kubota range and is well suited to smaller sites. It also benefits from good lifting capacity and is pitched as an owner/operator machine. “The five tonne models have been incredibly wellreceived by contractors and hirers,” reveals Rob, “and they enjoy some of the best market share in our entire portfolio. It’s a range that appeals to every class of user and we’re also very proud to have won a Red Dot Award for their design.”

All three units benefit from a full-color,

high-resolution 7in. LCD screen, larger space for the driver, improved visibility. The KX060-5 is a conventional tail swing and the U50-5 is the entry-level option built for the hire market.

“Kubota is number one for a reason and we talk to our customers to find out exactly what it is they need,” continues Rob. “At the same time, we’re in a full control of some much of the production process, particularly with our strength in engine manufacturing, and can control our own destiny as a result.”

“The machines hold their value, we have support from an extensive dealer network, including availability of spare parts, and they’re very reliable. Our customers are making purchasing decisions on the basis of total cost of ownership and that’s why we’ve been dominant in the market for so long.”

MASTER PLASTER

Due to the nature of the material, plasterboard must be handled, cut and fixed correctly to ensure a high quality finish. The plasterboard can easily be damaged if the screws are driven too strongly into the material and often standard combi-drills produce too much force. Specialist screwdrivers for use on plasterboard are designed to drive the screws securely into the material without damaging the board. The screwdriver does this by disengaging the bit when it reaches a set point to stop it driving the screw too far.

Furthermore, the weight of plasterboard means that the large number of screws may be required to ensure it is fixed properly. For example, National House Building Council (NHBC) guidelines recommend screws

speed and efficiency of fixing these screws can create a significant time saving. For example, the unique Push Drive Technology featured in the Makita 18V LXT Brushless Screwdriver DFS250 makes it quicker and easier. With the lock-on button engaged, the motor will run automatically when the screw is pressed into the surface of the board and will drive until the screw is properly located. This has the added advantage of reducing overall power consumption, for longer run times per battery charge. It also has a variable speed trigger to provide fine control where necessary.

Cordless cutter

In the course of any job that involves plasterboard installation there will likely be a need to trim the board to shape or create cut-outs for light switches, power sockets or ceiling lights. A cordless cutter designed for this is a valuable investment as it can make this process much easier. The Makita 18V LXT Drywall Cutter DCO181 uses a rotating bit similar to a router cutter, which allows the cut to be started at the edge or in the middle of the sheet and efficiently cuts the material. A drywall cutter can also be useful for easily

removing damaged areas of plasterboard that need to be replaced.

The DCO181 has a bit speed of up to 32,000 rpm for fast and easy cutting. The in-line tool design makes it comfortable to operate and can either be used free-hand or with a template or guide to make the alterations or cut outs. The DCO181 has an adjustable guide around the bit to allow the maximum depth of the cut to be set and avoid damaging anything that may be behind the plasterboard, such as wiring or pipework.

To ensure user safety and a clean work area, the Makita DCO181 has a dust extraction attachment that can fitted to the tool to capture and remove the plasterboard dust. It also has AutoStart Wireless System (AWS) technology that connects the tool to compatible dust extractors using Bluetooth to run the extractor automatically when the tool is in use.

Plasterboard installations, repairs and alterations can be made simpler and quicker by investing in specially designed power tools. A drywall screwdriver and cutter are valuable additions to your kit when tackling these jobs.

GRIPPING STUFF

Today’s homeowners are more environmentally conscious than ever before, with many actively choosing sustainable options, even if that comes at a higher cost. Being able to demonstrate to your customers that sustainability is something you take just as seriously is only going to become more important.

The main area to assess first is the products you use every day, and if it’s possible to choose the ‘greener’ option when selecting sealants and adhesives. Many manufacturers, including Sika Everbuild, are working hard to improve the sustainability of their products so there is a growing number of alternatives available which are less impactful on the environment. Manufacturers have invested a lot into developing products that meet sustainability credentials without affecting either their application or performance.

Ultimately if a product doesn’t meet these criteria, it simply won’t be used, or will need to be replaced sooner – making them less sustainable overall.

development came earlier this year when we launched Pinkgrip MS as part of the

popular Pinkgrip range and in response to growing demand for low VOC products. This new highly versatile grab adhesive is formulated using hybrid polymer technology to bring together the application and performance benefits of both the original solvent-based Pinkgrip and solvent-free Pinkgrip SF products.

Some of the specialist adhesives, such as the chemical anchor Anchorset Green, have also been reformulated. This styrenefree, low odour solution has been tested to meet LEED 2009 standards to provide the robust, durable performance that the chemical anchoring process demands.

Products which are formulated with low or no volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are generally better for the environment, but they can also bring other benefits like being low odour and quicker to dry. This makes low VOC products more pleasant for those working with them and for homeowners too –making them ideal for domestic refurbishments.

it’s important to remember that reducing waste doesn’t just happen at the end of a product’s life. The way the packaging is manufactured is another key part of the sustainability of an individual product.

The company is also in the process of introducing new packaging which is manufactured using a minimum content of 30 per cent post-consumer recycled (PCR) plastic, across its core product range. PCR plastic is the high-density polyethylene plastic commonly found in many consumer goods such as milk, shampoo and water containers, as well as sewer, water and gas pipes. The packaging development process was a lengthy one and the team made sure that it still meets the requirements in terms of its stability, shelf-life, product performance, including application, airtightness and tolerance to pressure.

Because of the nature of building chemical products, it isn’t possible to recycle or reuse this kind of packaging as the appropriate cleaning techniques are not readily available currently and without

58 I NOVEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER
SUSTAINABILITY
Hannah Sumner, senior product manager at Sika Everbuild explains.

this it can’t be cleaned to the standard required for onward recycling. But, reducing the amount of virgin plastic that goes into the manufacture of each piece of packaging using a proportion of PCR plastic content instead, is another way we can make a difference. In fact, we have estimated that this will save more than 400 tonnes of virgin plastic used by the company this year alone and this figure will increase as it rolls out the new packaging to more products in the future.

Unearthing embedded carbon Did you know that the processes involved in manufacturing construction materials can also influence their overall sustainability rating? This is known as ‘embedded carbon’ and takes into account all the energy that goes into the manufacture of a product including its packaging. By making improvements here and making sure factories are running as energy efficiently as possible this has a knock-on effect on a product’s sustainability too.

Recent investment in the manufacturing facility in Leeds has seen the installation of 600 new solar panels on the roof. The panels will generate 180 MWH of power annually and with projected emissions savings of more than 228 g CO2/kWh per year.

It might feel like this is all a drop in the ocean, but research has shown that even small changes will make a difference and choosing a more sustainable product next time you’re stocking up is a great place to start.

DOUBLE OR TRIPLE?

There has long been an assumption that triple glazing must be better than double glazing…of course it does, as you’re adding another pane of glass which makes it at least half as good again, right?! Well, the truth is that if it was that simple then the window industry would have been all over it like a rash…

One or two retail home improvement companies do offer triple glazing, and one of them at least actually offers it for no extra charge. But in the main, the industry doesn’t push it and homeowners have never really gone for triple, perhaps because they assume that it will be too expensive…either way, as a window and door manufacturer, we offer triple on a range of products but if it was as simple as it being that much better at everything and with no downsides, we wouldn’t bother selling double anymore.

Without getting into the physics of it, I will do my best to

performance of the window, in broad terms from around 1.4 W/(m²K), which is the minimum required by the recently revised Building Regs, to somewhere below 1.0 W/(m²K), when manufactured to the same standard and from similar materials. Sound attenuation – noise control – such as for homes facing a busy road, for example, will be improved whilst security is better by the simple expedient of the would-be burglar having an additional pane of glass to hack through.

However…

Some window types and styles cannot be fitted with triple units due to their design – such as slimmer aluminium frames, for example. And the weight is, of course, significantly greater, which has implications in handling and fitting, but also in terms of the load bearing of the structure they are to be installed into.

Triple glazed units installed in Vertical Sliding Box Sash frames can make the simple act of opening them significantly more onerous too.

Triple glazed windows are, of course, more expensive – perhaps as much as

cost of heating bills as they are. Further, triple glazing has a far higher carbon footprint created in its manufacture – as much as 40-50% more – which must be borne in mind if overall environmental impact is of concern.

Sound attenuation may, of course, be a compelling reason to install triple glazed units, but these are likely to be effective on the areas facing the noise source and unnecessary elsewhere. It is also worth bearing in mind that triple glazing can make rooms echo as noise cannot escape either, so fitting specially manufactured doubleglazed units with laminated glass make more sense.

As for security, few burglars will attempt to smash their way into a house through the glass irrespective of how many panes are fitted, due to the noise and commotion created. There are usually far easier options for the would-be aggressor.

So…

Triple

60 I NOVEMBER 2022 PROFESSIONAL BUILDER
Adrian Barraclough runs Quickslide, one of Britain’s leading window & door manufacturers.
Triple glazing has to be better…right? Well, yes and no…. it isn’t as simple as simply adding a third pane of glass to make everything at least a third better.
The case for specifying triple glazing is much more compelling where large spans of glass are installed The load bearing capabilities of the installation must be considered when specifying triple glazing
glazing adds considerable weight to windows and doors

achieved by similarly produced triple units. In countries where temperatures plunge below zero for much of the winter, triple glazing is a no brainer. Simply due to the nature of UK weather conditions, in mild British winters, triple glazing installed to exposed north and west facing elevations will usually be all that is required to justify their choice at all. Double is usually more than enough in the UK.

Special laminated ‘sound attenuation’ glass will often be more effective than an additional pane of standard glass to reduce noise pollution, whilst security may be improved by specifying laminated glass.

Triple over double can therefore never be an automatic choice: even if the spec is for the ‘most efficient windows that money can buy’, there are other considerations, down-sides, in fact, to having an extra pane of glass fitted in every window in the house.

An obvious case for using triple, however, where cost is no object, is for areas with large spans of glass – such as sliding patio doors – where the thermal benefits and security may well outweigh other considerations. For average homes with average windows, think ‘double’, but spec them well.

ON THE RIGHT FOOTING

Roofing battens are not just small section timbers that are quickly covered over. In fact, they are one of the most important parts of a pitched roof, acting as a structural and load bearing element. As well as supporting the dead weight of tiles and the imposed wind loads, roofing battens can also be used as a secure foothold during installation, so it makes sense to use the best battens – all roofing battens must be BS 5534 graded.

Know your battens

However, there are increasing concerns that due to the high demand for treated timber following recent supply issues, roofing battens that aren’t compliant or haven’t been through the right preservative treatment process may have entered the supply chain. This means that roofing contractors could be inadvertently using inferior roofing battens, thinking they are fully BS 5534 compliant. Posing significant health and safety risks, if a roofer were to step on a batten that didn’t have the required strength, it would only take a single batten failure to have serious consequences.

Trusted brand

Not all battens are fully BS 5534 compliant, and this is something that roofing contractors need to be aware of. The best way to have peace of mind about safety, quality and BS 5534 compliance of the batten is to buy a trusted batten brand, such as JB Red.

Here we look at some of the most common questions asked about batten safety, helping roofers to know what to look out for when it comes to battens.

Q Can roofers stand on a roofing batten during installation?

Any battens sold as roofing battens should be graded to the BS 5534 standard but unfortunately, this is not always the case. It is very important to note that only BS 5534 graded battens should be used as a secure foothold

during roof installation. Unless you buy from a trusted manufacturer, it would be risky to assume that just because you buy roofing battens, that they are fully compliant and safe to stand on.

Q How can I check that a roofing batten is safe to use?

When the battens are delivered to site, four simple visual checks should be carried out:

• Grading stamp –Make sure there is an indelible BS 5534 stamp on the batten – only battens that have been pre or factory graded to BS 5534 can be called roofing battens.

• Third party accreditation –Look for an independent quality mark –Marley’s JB Red battens have a BBA stamp to demonstrate this.

• Check for damage or defects – When picked up from one end, the batten should be straight and not snap (within the agreed BS 5534 limit of 5mm distortion). Some defects are allowed –for a full list, email info@marley.co.uk for a free battens pocket checklist. If there is a defect you are unsure of, contact the manufacturer.

• Timber –The species of tree, from which the timber has come from, should be stamped on the batten. Marley only uses slow grown imported redwood or whitewood for its JB Red battens. Also look out for an FSC or PEFC stamp to ensure sustainable sourcing.

QMy batten has a BS 5534 stamp, but it does have quite a few defects. Should I use it?

As a natural material, timber battens will obviously have varied characteristics, but BS 5534 is very strict about what is and isn’t allowed. Marley’s machine grading process scans JB Red battens by the millimetre to make sure they meet the requirements of the standard. If there are any doubts about defects, the batten should not be used and the manufacturer contacted – far better to be safe than sorry.

Q Are all coloured roofing battens fully compliant with BS 5534?

There is a misconception that colour is proof of compliance and effective preservative treatment but unfortunately this isn’t the case. The colour of Marley’s JB Red battens helps indicate to merchants and their customers as well as building inspectors, that the battens used are compliant. However, they also have all the correct stamps, third party accreditation and supporting documentation to back this up. Never take colour alone as proof of quality.

JB Red

Exhibiting exceptionally high quality of manufacture at every stage – from integral strength and consistency of size to thoroughly protective treatments – JB Red battens can be purchased as part of a full Marley roof system, backed up with a free 15-year warranty. Giving real peace of mind, JB Red battens are an easy choice to make.

As you read this it is quite likely to be cold and rainy. Hard to remember that just a few short months ago we were sweltering in record-breaking summer temperatures, and in the middle of a serious drought. Hosepipe bans, the lot.

I even finally got round to fitting a rainwater diverter on my downpipe at home, and praying that the garden water butt might eventually get a few drops in it.

Across the Atlantic, things were even worse, and still are. In California, drought is a way of life, and almost all the water has to be piped in hundreds of miles from mountain ranges and rivers to the north.

But apparently a decadeslong mega drought doesn’t stop the wealthy residents of Los Angeles from filling their swimming pools and watering their lawns.

NAVIEN WEBSITE

The full range of high efficiency Navien heating and hot water products is presented on the the manufacturer’s new website. The ‘professional’ section includes downloadable technical literature, brochures and installation guides for all its gas and oil boilers, water heaters and smart controls, as well as the latest case studies showcasing the company’s products in action.

VANDERSANDEN

is a digital brochure from Vandersanden. The online resource offers a comprehensive guide to all brick shapes and types – from hand-formed to wirecut – as well as sizes and colourways, including bright whites, contemporary greys, bold blacks, rustic reds, soft buffs/yellows and creative pastels.

Expensive metering, and fines for over-use, don’t have much impact for super-wealthy Hollywood stars. They will just pay up and keep their lawn sprinklers running.

So the water authorities have hit on the idea of fitting flow restrictors, which seem to have had a noticeable effect. Journalists say the only green lawns now are the ones which have been painted green (yes, that is something that really happens in the USA, apparently).

Flow restrictors have already been fitted on homes owned by numerous celebrities. A spokesman for the water authority said, “It doesn’t matter who you are, how well-known you are –all of you are being treated the same.”

The thing that I most noticed about these reports was Hollywood stars saying that the flow restrictors meant

that they couldn’t use two things at the same time. For example, you can’t take a shower while the dishwasher is running.

This indicates that these stars’ mega-mansions must be all running on direct pressure, with no water storage tanks. Well, where have we heard these sorts of complaints before? – in UK homes fitted with combi boiler systems, of course. Want to take a shower while the washing machine is running, or even if your nextdoor neighbour is having a shower at the same time? –then you’d better get used to dodging in and out of the fluctuating hot-and-cold stream.

What many British people don’t realise is that the traditional UK indirect plumbing system became mandatory during and after the Second World War. Because of the problems caused by enemy bombing damaging water mains and reservoirs, it was deemed advisable for every home to have its own water storage cistern.

What a great idea. All those millions of little 250 litre cisterns added up to a total water storage the size of several huge reservoirs.

Now if only someone had told the Hollywood film stars about this. Then maybe they would still be able to take a leisurely shower at the same time as their maids are washing the dishes.

Let’s talk about SEPSIS...

Back in September, you might have heard people or campaigns talking about sepsis. That’s because September is Sepsis awareness month. This is helpful for drawing attention to this life threatening condition, but that doesn’t mean we should forget about it the rest of the year! It is so important I want to draw attention again to sepsis as it might help you save a life.

So what is sepsis? Sepsis, also known as septicaemia or septic shock, is a serious life threatening condition that happens when the body’s immune system (the part of the body that fights off infection) overreacts in response to an infection. Now, this can be any infection, it doesn’t have to be a specific infection. Often we think of sepsis related to an infection like meningitis, but it can also happen with more common illnesses like chest infections or urine infections too.

Sepsis is life threatening and can happen to anyone – children or adults. Urgent medical care is needed to help. It is more common in certain groups of people:

Babies aged less than 1 year old, especially if they are born prematurely Older adults aged over 75 People with diabetes

People with a weakened immune system (on chemotherapy, for example)

People who have recently had surgery or another serious illness

Women who have recently given birth, or had a miscarriage or an abortion.

Sepsis can be really hard to spot. That’s why it is important to know what to look out for. In some of the vulnerable groups listed above, it can be difficult to how unwell they are especially if it is a young baby or an older person who might have dementia.

In sepsis, you must call 999 or attend the nearest A&E department if there are any of the following signs: blue, pale or blotchy skin. On black or brown skin, blueness may be easier to see on the lips, tongue or gums,

around the eyes or under the nails if the person is acting confused or has slurred speech (in an older child or adult)

in babies or small children there may be a weak, high-pitched cry sounding different to their normal cry, a change in behaviour to be less responsive than

normal or loss of interest in feeding a rash that does not fade when you roll a glass over it (as seen in meningitis) any signs of breathing difficulty (there may be grunting noises or their stomach sucking under their ribcage in children), breathlessness or breathing very fast.

Someone with sepsis may have some or all of these symptoms. If your gut instinct is telling you that something isn’t right or you are worried about yourself or someone else getting more unwell then please do not delay. If you are with someone and they suddenly become more unwell with suspected sepsis then call a 999 ambulance and tell the call handler. Sepsis is an emergency.

Sepsis can be managed best in hospital where antibiotics can be given (within 1 hour) and the infection can be treated. In some cases when people are very unwell they may develop organ failure or need a ventilator to help with breathing. Intensive care units help look after the most unwell patients while they have treatment.

Most people will make a full recovery from sepsis but, according to the UK Sepsis Trust, 52,000 people in the UK will die from it every year (including 1,000 children). Recovery from sepsis can take a long time, and some people will be left with physical or emotional side effects from being so unwell. It is important to have a paced recovery.

So please, once again, have a look at the signs of sepsis to be aware of. If there is any concern, seek medical advice. If sepsis crosses your mind then call for immediate help –it could save a life.
