ATTRIBUTED TO JOHN BOWEN (DIED 1773), NORTH EAST PROSPECT OF SHREWSBURY

oil on canvas, 68.5 x 182cm, frame 76 x 191cm

Note: John Bowen was the son of an artist and well regarded for his architectural accuracy, exemplified by this painting and a number of his other works in Shrewsbury Museum's collection. It is worth noting that Saint Julian's (with a tower), Saint Mary's and Saint Alkmund's Church (from left to right in the centre) are all shown as one would expect of an 18th century depiction, but more interestingly, Old Saint Chads Church is shown to the left of this group, before its tower collapsed on 8th July 1788. Given the new English Bridge, that was built from 1769-1774, is not evident and nor are the changes to the Abbey (on the far left), which lost its southern aspect following Thomas Telford's London Road construction, this depiction must pre-date 1769, but as yet, a more precise date has yet to be ascertained for this aspect. We are grateful to Shrewsbury Museum for their assistance and help in cataloguing this lot. Label verso- loaned by Rev. J.T. R----, Baschurch Vicarage. Rev J.T. Ryder was a vicar of Baschurch from 1883-1912 £7,000 - £10,000

ENGLISH SCHOOL, 18TH CENTURY, SOUTHERN PROSPECT OF SHREWSBURY

oil on canvas, 49 x 74cm

Note: This Southern prospect of Shrewsbury is a Capriccio and a good contrast to the larger counterpart, for the unknown artist has moved the old English Bridge and Gatehouse around the river, Saint Julian's Church is incorrectly positioned and the time that this work depicts, where the defensive walls are intact, there should also have been many wall towers present. Given the walls were gradually demolished throughout the 18th century and all the architectural inconsistencies, it is difficult to date this depiction trees, which curiously and uncharacteristically John Bowen used to omit. There is a near-identical engraving by Johannes Kip (Dutch 1652/3-1722) circa 1715 We are grateful to Shrewsbury Museum for their assistance and help in cataloguing this lot. £3,000 - £5,000

Hayes Collection, purchased at Sotheby's Olympia in 2005. Notes: Godden suggests that the incised H stands for Francois Hardenbourg from Strasbourg, who worked at the Sèvres manufactory and at the Caughley factory from 1780-88. The original vendor noted that the monteith, originally one of two sold, came from a house in Falloden Northumberland and possibly belonged to the house's previous owner, Foreign Secretary Sir Edward Grey. This monteith is one of only four known. One is held in the V&A Museum, another in the Shrewsbury Museum and a third in a private collection in Germany. £1,500 - £2,000

AN ITALIAN SILVER CIGARETTE CASE

stamped 800, formally engraved with floral and scrolling decoration, interior with engraved signature 'Mussolini' and the inscription 'Luglio 1944 - XXII', 8.5cm wide, 12.3cm high, contained with a purple pouch with a white leather trim. Provenance: By family repute, this cigarette case was a personal gift from Benito Mussolini to Admiral Dönitz. It was acquired by Major William George Cole who served with British Military Intelligence from 1940-46, including attendance at the Nuremberg Trials. Mussolini is known to have given out several such silver cigarette cases to potential allies or friends. For example, Ruth Hannah's Leaflets of Our Resistance: VOL 1 (Exclamation Publishers, 2009) includes an interview with prominent Federico Stallforth, a prominent New York businessman, who dealt with both the German Foreign Office and German opposition simultaneously in the attempt of postponing entry of the United States into the war. In this interview, Stallforth mentions receiving a very similar cigarette as a gift from Mussolini as thanks for his work. Alongside Mussolini's engraved signature, the cigarette case in this lot is inscribed with the date 22nd July 1944 (Juglio 1944 – XXII). Further research shows this date does indeed coincide with the recorded meeting between Mussolini and Dönitz at the Wolfschanze, shortly after the failed assassination attempt on Hitler. After Hitler's suicide, Dönitz was arrested alongside his provisional government and staff at Flensburg on 23rd June 1945 where they were taken into custody by the men of the 4th (Territorial) Battalion King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. At some point before transfer from Flensburg, Dönitz’s bags were searched and several items were known to have been stolen. Notable items taken from those bags at the time a ceremonial baton, which was later donated by Brigadier Jack Church to the Shrewsbury Regimental Museum. This item is offered via direct descent from Major Cole. £700 - £900

He settled in Paris and created a prolific amount of prints including the siege of Arras by the Royal Army and topographical prints of 17th century Paris. He returned to Florence in later life, receiving a pension from the Grand Duke and schooling Cossimo III in drawing.
