Joseph Farquharson was a landscape painter and is famous for his winter, snow-clad scenes, often enlivened with flocks of sheep. He did a number of works depicting gardens. Bonhams sold a similar sized example for £4,000 on the 14th of October 2020. Lyon and Turnbull sold a strikingly similar, but larger painting on the 4th of December 2020 for £5,500. He was born in Edinburgh, studying under Peter Graham, RA and subsequently at the Board of Manufacture School and RSA, where he exhibited in 1859. He exhibited at the RA from 1873, being elected an ARA in 1900. He studied under Carolus Duran in 1880. In an essay Sickert wrote he expressed that he preferred Farquharson's work to that of Courbet. Bonhams sold a similar size example for £4,000 on the 14th of October 2020. Lyon and Turnbull sold a larger garden view, bearing a striking resemblance to the one depicted here, on the 4th of December 2020 for £5,500. £2000-£3000

In the 1950s and 1960s Tunnicliffe created hundreds of ‘fancy pigeon’ paintings showcasing rare and prized breeds for a series intended to be published in a definitive book on behalf of his friend Thomas Forshaw, who was a fancy pigeon breeder himself. Tunnicliffe visited countless fine breeder collections to observe the birds and also travelled around many of the rural agricultural events such as the Royal Welsh Show to seek out award-winning breeds for his studies.

Notes: Antar, the son of the Emir of the Bani Ans tribe, was captured in a raid and kept as a black slave. During his time in captivity, Antar fell in love with Abla, the daughter of King Zoheir, but was initially refused marriage by her father on the basis of his origins and the colour of his skin. Despite this prejudice, he went on to prove himself numerous times in combat and chivalry and it was these acts that eventually won both his freedom and Abla’s hand in marriage. Sadly, he was by a poisoned arrow killed during an excursion to escort the 1,000 camels which would have acted as the final gift in order to seal the marriage and as such, he never got to marry the one he loved. £1000-£1500

thomAs henry kendAll mAster crAftsmAn 1837-1919 Thomas Henry Kendall (1837-1919) is, perhaps, not as well known today as he was in life and so when looking at his many achievements and accolades, one can’t help feeling that he ought to be ranked alongside nearcontemporaries Christopher Dresser, William Damorgan or William Morris in terms of stature. Not that he was in any way associated with the Arts & Crafts movement but he was, nevertheless, a great artist, craftsman and designer, one of the key exponents of the Warwick school of wood carving. Fashion and taste today place huge emphasis on those practitioners in Morris’s orbit but much less on the men and women who produced the majority of Victorian decorative objects in the prevailing taste of the day. Kendall was born on 23 November 1837, the fourth of seven sons, to William Kendall in the village of Kineton. William was, himself, an interesting character and worthy of his own biography, having played a key role in the building of Birmingham Town Hall to the design of architects Hansom and Welch (Hansom also being the inventor of the Hansom Carriage), but at the time of Thomas’s birth he was land agent to Lord Willoughby-de-Broke of Compton Verney and latterly also for the Lucy’s at Charlecote Hall, now part of the National Trust. These connections played a key part in the development of Thomas’s career as they afforded him access to an enviable address book of clients. In his youth, Thomas assisted his father in his work, copying and annotating architectural plans. Such was his early blossoming skill as a draughtsman that when his father acquired a 17th century church Bible with the last two chapters of the book of Revelations missing, Thomas meticulously reproduced them by hand with pen and ink to match the Old English type (see lot 240, the Kendall Bible). So perfectly written were these pages that they were almost impossible to distinguish from the original printing. Thomas was apprenticed to the wood carver J.M.Wilcox and after a period of arduous menial work was eventually entrusted with a chisel. One of his first commissions, along with fellow apprentice G.W.R.Humphriss, was carrying out the intricate carving on a magnificent sideboard or buffet for Charlecote Hall in 1858. The piece was much praised at the time, described by John Ruskin as being ‘worthy of Michaelangelo’ but it was to be Wilcox’s last significant commission. Barely eighteen months later he died, accidentally or intentionally, having fallen head-first into a water butt at his home. William Kendall was able to buy Wilcox’s business for his son, Thomas, then aged twenty-two, who quickly established his place as a premier wood carver with a string of wealthy and influential clients and a series of awards

and accolades to his name. Among some of his celebrated commissions was an extensive suite of carved furniture for Sir Charles Mordaunt of Walton Hall, the richly carved library and dining room at Shotover near Oxford, the library, staircase and other interior features at Welcombe Hall in Stratford-upon-Avon and many ecclesiastical works including choir stalls and lecterns for several Welsh and English churches. Perhaps his most high-profile work was a series of thirty-two carved panels for the member’s dining room at the House of Commons, carried out from 1872 onwards. This commission was won having been invited to submit designs in competition with other venerable sculptors. Kendall’s panels depicted game, wild flowers, sealife, fruits and vegetables and remain in place today. His studio and showrooms in Warwick were visited several times by Royalty and it is recorded that The Duke of Edinburgh attended in 1883 and was presented with a carved aneroid barometer frame which he later often lent for exhibition, so delighted was he with it. The Prince of Wales, accompanied by a large retinue, visited on two occasions, first in 1892 and then again in 1895. Such had become his renown as a premier wood carver that the Royal Academy relaxed its rules on admitting works in wood in order to include Kendall’s entries which became a regular fixture from the 1870s onwards. Today Kendall’s achievements are, somewhat unfairly, overlooked compared with some of his contemporaries. Perhaps because his work has been eclipsed by that of the Arts & Crafts movement and the more stylised forms of Art Nouveau and Secessionism which, certainly in the last thirty years, have captured much more attention among collectors and connoisseurs. And when the Chapel Street studio and showrooms were demolished in 1957, and the contents, which had remained largely untouched since Kendall’s death in 1919, dispersed, it was at a time when the fussiness of high Victorian art was at a very low ebb in popularity. But one couple, the parents of our present vendor, recognised the quality in all his work, sufficient to purchase a good proportion of the interior including many architectural features. While some of these were exhibited and subsequently sold at Sotheby’s Chester rooms in 19834, the balance of the collection is presented here by Halls Fine Art. In 1900, while Kendall was still at full power, The Biographer magazine wrote eloquently about his life and work, surmising “The time will undoubtedly come, perhaps long after the artist has passed away, when his works will be eagerly competed for by connoisseurs.” Surely that day has come.

Second folio edition of the King James Bible, commonly known as the Great She Bible. Black letter with large typeface, printed in double columns with 59 lines to a full column. Complete with general title, New Testament title and double-page map of Canaan by More & Speed. Includes Apocrypha. With the reading ‘she’ in Ruth 3 v.15, and with a tipped-in slip correcting the ‘Judas’ for ‘Jesus’ error in Matthew 26 v.36. Worn mid-nineteenth century blind-stamped calf, red edges. Footnote: What is extraordinary about this copy is that the last two and a half pages of the book of Revelations were missing from the book, so in 1850 Thomas Kendall, when only 13 years of age, using a pen and Indian ink, copied out the missing pages in perfect facsimile. Kendall’s work starts from the last few words of Revelations 20 v. 12 and goes on to the end, including the tailpiece. The calligraphy is such a superb copy of the old black letter typeface that it is virtually impossible to distinguish from the printed page. The only discernible difference is that the ruled border surrounding the page is slightly thinner. The paper used for the last two leaves is slightly heavier stock. Herbert 319. Footnote: The bible was purchased in or before 1850 by William Kendall, an architect and building surveyor of Warwickshire. His son, Thomas Henry Kendall (1837-1919), the noted wood carver of Warwick, came to be regarded as the doyen of British wood carvers. As a boy he was frequently put to work copying plans and documents for his father. In 1850, when only 13 years of age, he copied out the last two and a half pages of the bible, which were missing from the book his father had bought. The bible and its history is recalled in articles on Thomas Kendall in The Biographer and Review, August 1900, and in The Gentleman’s Journal and Gentlewoman’s Court Review, August 27th 1910, where Kendall himself shows the bible to a journalist in response to a question asking to be shown some of his earliest work. August 19th, 1932, a hand written letter addressed to a previous owner, by Louis H Maby, Violin Maker & Dealer, 14 Lower Arcade, Bristol 1, "I have examined the cello you left with me and in my opinion it is a Panormo, youth Panormo (son of Vincent Panormo), London, about 1830". A further typed letter dated 2nd April 1971 by Mr. Robert Raeburn, violin maker, restorer and expert, of The Rectory, Toft, Cambridge, reads "I certify that the Violoncello in the possession of [current vendor] is in my judgement the work of the Panormo family. The instrument is not labelled but can probably be attributed to Edward Ferdinand Panormo of London and Brighton, grandson of Vincenzo Trusiano Panormo. I date it at circa 1830 - 40. It is possible that it is a composite instrement: the back and sides being considerably older than the top and probably the work of Vincenzo Panormo. Descriptiopn: The back in two pieces of 'fiercely' grained maple cut on the slab. The table of medium grained pine. Head and sides of medium 'flamed' maple. The varnish: table of reddish colour. Back and sides of golden-brown. The Violoncello is in a good stage of preservation. I value it at £400". A later hand written letter by J.R Geach, Luthier, 15 Market Square, Bishoip's Castle, Salop, dated July 28th 1987, addressed to the current vendor " Having today examined the viloncello belonging to [current vendor] and having certification dated 1932 and 1971, I am able to say that the instrument, unlabelled, is of the Panormo family or school, and that it dates from the first third of the 19th century. A private Herefordshire estate. It is common to find the canted corners of these late 18th century chests showing blind fretwork, but unusual to find them inlaid. It is still more rare to see marquetry decoration and more rare still to see the canted corners of the bracket feet inlaid with marquetry. This example has both these features. It begs the question, who made this. Lot 64 sold on the 18th of November 2009 at Bonhams Bond Street for £19,200 (including premium), shares very similar marquetry canted corners. The floral pendants are strikingly alike, but there are no other significant comparisons to be made. £1500-£2000

Footnote: A Compton stoneware garden sundial with the same design of column and base as the present lot was sold at Summer's Place Billingshurst rooms, 20 May 2014. Founded by Mary Watts, wife of the painter George Frederick Watts, in 1895, The Compton Potters Art Guild was located in the village of Compton, near Godalming, Surrey. The Watts were strong advocates of the Home Arts and Industries Association, a movement launched by Earl Brownlow in 1885 to revive the art of handicraft among the working classes. The Pottery Art Guild developed quickly, winning medals at the Royal Botanical Society and the Home Arts highest accolade, the gold cross. Their garden ornaments were sold by Liberty's and they received architectural commissions from Edwin Lutyens, Clough William-Ellis and Goodhart Rendel. £1000-£1500

In these Conditions Halls Holdings Limited act only as auctioneers and agents for the seller and the representative of Halls Holdings Limited conducting the auction is called the “Auctioneer”. 2. General. Whilst Halls Holdings Limited make every effort to ensure the accuracy of their catalogues and the description of any lot:(a) Each lot as set out in the catalogue or as divided or combined with any other lot or lots sold by the seller with all faults, imperfections and errors of description. (b) Halls Holdings Limited do not accept responsibility for the authenticity, attribution, genuineness, origin, authorship, date, age, period, condition or quality of any lot unless they have been instructed in writing by the seller to so certify, and in such case the auctioneers do so as agents of the seller and are not themselves responsible for such claims. (c)All statements whether printed in the catalogue or made orally as to any of the matters set out in (b) above are statements of opinion only and are not to be taken as being or implying any warranties or representations of fact by Halls Holdings Limited unless they have been instructed in writing by the seller to so certify. (d) Any claim under any Statute must be received in writing by the Auctioneers within ten days of the day of the sale. 3. The Auction. (a) The Auctioneer has absolute discretion to divide any lot, to combine any two or more lots or withdraw any lot or lots from the sale, to refuse bids, regulate bidding or cancel the sale without in any case giving any reason or without previous notice. He may bid on behalf of the seller for all goods which are being offered subject to reserve or at the auctioneer’s discretion. (b) The highest bidder shall be the buyer except in the case of a dispute. The Auctioneer may at his sole discretion determine the advance of bidding or refuse a bid. If during the auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute has arisen, he has absolute discretion to settle it or to re-offer the lot. (d) All conditions, notices, descriptions, statements and other matters in the catalogue and elsewhere concerning any lot are subject to any statements modifying or affecting the same made by the Auctioneer from the rostrum prior to any bid being accepted for the lot. 4. Rescission. Notwithstanding any other terms of these Conditions, if within fourteen days after the sale Halls Holdings Limited have received from the buyer of any lot notice in writing that in his view the lot is a deliberate forgery and within twenty-one days after such notification the buyer returns the same to Halls Holdings Limited in the same condition as at the time of sale and by producing evidence, the burden of proof to be upon the buyer, satisfies Halls Holdings Limited that considered in the light of the entry in the catalogue the lot is a deliberate forgery then the sale of the lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. The seller and the buyer agree to be bound by Halls Holdings Limited’s decision 5. Default. Halls Holdings Limited disclaim responsibility for default by either the buyer or the seller because they act as agents for the seller only and therefore do not pay out to the seller until payment is received from the buyer. Instructions given by telephone are accepted at the sender’s risk and must be confirmed in writing forthwith. 6. In the event of a sale by private treaty both the seller and the buyer agree to be bound by the general and any Special Conditions of Sale. 7. Third Party Liability. Every person on Halls Holdings Limited’s premises at any time shall be deemed to be there at his own risk. He shall have no claim against Halls Holdings Limited in respect of any accident which may occur or injury, damage or loss howsoever caused, save in so far as the injury, damage or loss shall be caused by the direct negligence of Halls Holdings Limited’s employees

Opportunity is given for inspection and each buyer by making a bid for a lot acknowledges that he has satisfied himself fully before bidding by inspection or otherwise to all the Sale Conditions, the physical condition of and description of the lot including but not restricted to whether the lot is damaged or has been repaired or restored. 9. Property and Risk. The legal title in a lot shall not pass to the buyer until the lot(s) has been paid for in full and the Auctioneers shall be entitled to a lien on any lot sold until the purchase price (as defined in 10 below) is paid in full but each lot is at the sole risk of the buyer from the fall of the hammer. Each buyer shall forthwith give his full names and permanent address and if called upon to do so by the Auctioneer shall forthwith pay Halls Holdings Limited such proportion of the purchase price as the Auctioneer may require. If the buyer fails to do so, the lot may at the auctioneer’s sole direction be put up again and re-sold. 10.Every bidder shall be deemed to act as principal unless there is in force a written acknowledgement by Halls Holdings Limited that he acts as agent on behalf of a named principal. 11. Removal of goods. (a)No purchase shall be claimed or removed until the sale has been concluded. All lots shall be paid for and removed at the buyer’s risk and expense by the end of the second working day after the sale, failing which the Auctioneer shall not be responsible if the same are lost, stolen, damaged or destroyed, and all lots not so removed shall remain at the risk of the buyer and subject to a warehousing charge. If they are not paid for and removed within seven days of the sale the Auctioneer may re-sell them by auction or privately without notice to the buyer. Any liability which there may be on the part of the Auctioneer in respect of any loss shall be restricted to a maximum of the price paid by the buyer of the lot. (b) In the event of any failure of the buyer to comply with any of the above conditions the damages recoverable by the seller or the Auctioneers from the defaulter shall include any loss arising on any re-sale of the lots, together with the charges and expenses in respect of both sales, and together with interest at 2% above Handelsbanken Base Rate upon the price of any lot which has not been paid for within forty-eight hours of the sale, and any money deposited in part payment shall be held by the Auctioneers on account of any liability of the defaulter to them or to the seller. We accept cash up to €10,000, debit cards, bank transfers and personal cheques. We apologise we do not accept credit cards. Cheques drawn by third parties, whether in the auctioneer’s favour or requiring endorsement, cannot be accepted. 12. Purchase Price. The buyer shall pay the hammer price together with a premium at the stated rates on the hammer price of 20%. under the Auctioneers’ Margin Scheme operated by HM Customs & Excise, the premium does attract VAT as an addition to the stated premium rate. 13. Commission to Bid. Halls Holdings Limited will execute bids on behalf of intending buyers unable to attend the sale at no charge. Halls Holdings Limited undertake to purchase lots as cheaply as allowed by other bids and reserves. Bids must be submitted in writing and whilst every care is taken in carrying out instructions Halls Holdings Limited cannot be held responsible for errors or omissions made in carrying out such bids. 14. Lots on which Value Added Tax is payable on or included in the hammer price are indicated in the catalogue or description sheet with a sign. VAT is payable on or included in the hammer price of such lots at the rates prevailing on the day of the auction.
conditions of sAle ApplicAble to sellers 15. The seller authorises Halls Holdings Limited to deduct commission at the published rate and to retain the buyer’s premium of 20% plus VAT. The seller agrees to pay all special advertising charges and illustration charges (see 24) insomuch that they are reasonable. Scale of Commission - Halls Business tariff card available at all Halls offices and salerooms on request. 16. Value Added Tax. A seller who sends for sale by auction any chattel(s) which is an asset of his business must disclose to the Auctioneer whether or not he is a registered person for Value Added Tax purposes and, if so, his registered number and whether or not he intends to operate the Dealer Margin Scheme covering works of art, etc. This information must be supplied to the Auctioneer on or prior to delivery of the goods. 17. Instructions. All goods delivered to the Auctioneers’ premises will be deemed to be delivered for Sale by Auction and will be catalogued and sold accordingly unless special instructions are recorded on the receipt. 18. Reserves. Halls Holdings Limited will be pleased to advise on suitable protective reserves but if no reserves have been received prior to the day of the Sale, the lot will be sold without reserve or at the discretion of the Auctioneer. Reserves must be confirmed in writing or notified on the receipt at the time of delivery. 19. Indemnity. Vendors shall indemnify Halls Holding Ltd against any claims in connection with goods sold by Halls on the vendor’s behalf. 20. Collections. The Auctioneers do not themselves undertake the collection of goods but acting expressly as Agents, they will if required, instruct or recommend a carrier on the vendor’s behalf for which there will be a charge. 21. Withdrawals. Where a seller cancels instructions for sale, or where a lot is withdrawn for any reason other than misattribution or authenticity, Halls Holdings Limited reserves the right to charge a fee equal to 10% plus VAT of the reserve price of the lot, or where no reserve has been fixed, Halls’ lower estimate of the item(s) withdrawn, together with any expenses incurred in relation to the item(s) withdrawn. 22. Insurance. Halls Fine Art are not regulated by the FSA for the provision of insurance to its clients. However, Halls Holdings Limited, for its own protection insures property consigned to it at bottom pre sale estimate, unless the item has been sold, in which instance property is insured at the hammer price for loss, occasioned as a result of theft, fire or negligence whilst in their custody or control. 23. Warranty of Title. The seller warrants to Halls Holdings Limited and to the buyer that he is the true owner of the property or is properly authorised to sell the property by the true owner and is able to transfer good and marketable title to the property free from any third party claims. 24. Photography. Vendors give Halls Holdings Limited the right to photograph and illustrate and promote any lot placed with them for sale and to use such photographs and illustrations at any time at their discretion, whether or not in connection with the auction. 25. Electrical and Mechanical goods. The seller and consignor of
electrical or mechanical goods warrants and undertakes to Halls Holdings Limited that on the date received by Halls that the same are safe if reasonably used for the purpose for which they were designed and free from any defect not obvious on external inspection which could prove dangerous to human life or health, and will indemnify Halls its servants and agents against any loss or damage suffered by any breach of the above warranty. 26. Agency. The Auctioneers act throughout as Agents only and are not responsible for any default by the buyer. Halls Holdings Limited disclaim liability for paying the vendor until they have received settlement from the purchaser. 27. Warehousing. The Auctioneers exempt themselves from any liability to goods delivered to their salerooms without sufficient sale instructions,and reserve the right to make a warehousing charge in this respect. A similar warehousing charge will be applicable for goods left on their premises after they have requested the vendor to remove them. 28. Unsold goods. unsold goods must be collected if they are not to be re-offered within 14 days following receipt of any after sale advice slip. Halls Holdings Limited reserve the right to sell by auction on behalf of the vendor without reserve any items after this period. 29. Important Notice. Any monies held on your behalf will be held in a Clients Bank Account at the Handelsbanken, Shrewsbury and will be protected by the FSA. Furthermore for your protection, Halls adhere to the Clients Monies rules of the RICS. Any incidental interest earned on such monies will be retained by Halls as part of their terms of engagements, and by instructing Halls to act on your behalf, you are agreeing to and endorsing that course of action. RICS operates a Clients’ Money Protection Scheme (CMPS). This scheme, of last resort, covers direct loss of clients’ money as a result of misappropriation (or equivalent) by a RICS Regulated Firm, up to a £50000 limit. The CMPS nor Halls will provide protection for the failure of a bank. But protection for bank failure is provided by The Financial Services Compensation Scheme up to a £50000 limit. Halls’ Buyer’s Premium is 20% plus VAT for the first £500,000 and 12% above £500,000 per lot Can I ask questions about lots before the auction? You can ask for further details and extra images about any lots in our sales and this is especially important if you cannot view the lot in person. We don’t detail condition in our catalogue descriptions and so recommend asking for a condition report and additional images. Our reports provide a general guide to the condition of a lot but are not a forensic examination and so a physical inspection by you or an appointed agent is ideal. To request a condition report go to the lot of interest and click on the 'Request a condition report' button or email fineart@hallsgb.com. Condition reports are always given in writing. Registering to bid To bid in any one of our auctions we require all potential buyers to register and provide two forms of identification. This is to comply with existing Anti-Money Laundering Regulations. All our clients need to provide photo ID and proof of name and address by providing the following: a government issued form of photo identification (plastic card element of a driving licence, or passport) proof of address such as a bank statement or utility bill, dated within the last 3 months Please send copies via email to fineart@hallsgb.com when arranging your bid. These documents will be sent to a secure computer and uploaded to your client details. Please allow plenty of time for registration and before 4.30pm the day before the auction. Bids left after this time cannot be guaranteed and may not be submitted. Buying ivory Items made of or containing elements of elephant ivory are subject to trading bans in the USA and China among other jurisdictions, and are subject to CITES regulations in the UK. If you are bidding outside the UK, please ensure you are aware of your country’s regulations BEFORE bidding. We cannot rescind a sale if you are unable to ship ivory to your country
After the Auction When should I pay for and collect my purchase? We usually like to receive payment and collection arrangements within seven days of the auction. If you are the successful bidder and once you have paid for your items please arrange a Collection appointment using our Click and Collect service by phoning the office on 01743 450 700 or email fineart@hallsgb.com and state when you would like to collect. What payment methods can I use? You can pay with cash (up to £8,000), debit cards, direct bank transfer or a personal cheque. We regret that we do not accept payment by credit card.
