HALLFIELD CHALLENGE UNITES COMMUNITY IN CHARITY WALK
Dear Reader,
As we draw the curtain on another remarkable academic year at Hallfield, I am delighted to welcome you to Issue 11 of Hallfield Focus – a celebration of everything that makes our school so special.
Within these pages, you’ll find countless examples of courage, creativity, and community. Whether it’s Samran’s silver medal on the international jiu-jitsu stage, Ivy’s artwork being selected by the Royal Academy, or the mathematical brilliance of our Year 6 team placing 3rd nationally – our pupils continue to inspire us with their talent, determination, and zest for learning.
You’ll also read about events that brought us together – from the moving VE Day commemorations and the magic of The Lion King Jr. production, to the joyous energy of Sports Day and the musical triumphs of our Music Prom. Our pupils continue to show that they are not only high achievers, but also enthusiastic participants in a rich, diverse school life.
What resonates most for me is the strong sense of community that runs through every story. Whether it’s pupils fundraising for charities close to their hearts, welcoming inspiring visitors, or reconnecting with Old Hallfieldians, Hallfield is a place where values matter –and where every achievement is celebrated.
Thank you to our dedicated staff, supportive parents, and wonderful pupils for making this another unforgettable year. I hope you enjoy looking back at all that we’ve achieved together.
With warmest wishes
Keith Morrow
Mr K B Morrow
Well done to Edward in Year 8, who represented Hallfield at the IAPS U13 Clay Pigeon Shooting Competition. He gave it his all, scoring a nearperfect 9/10 to start! Edward demonstrated outstanding skill and composure, and we are very proud of him.
Huge congratulations to Samran in Pre-Prep for winning a silver medal at an international jiu-jitsu competition! Competing in the under-24kg grey belt category, Samran showed incredible determination and discipline – sticking to a strict routine to make weight and powering through three tough matches with only short breaks in between.
His hard work and commitment paid off as he secured second place on the international stage. What an outstanding achievement – well done, Samran! We’re so proud of you.
Congratulations to Alex in Year 3 for earning a bronze medal in Level 2 of the Crest Mathematical Olympiad! After qualifying for the second round, he performed brilliantly.
This fantastic achievement highlights Alex’s commitment and passion for maths. We’re so proud of this young mathematician – he truly loves a challenge and continues to shine at such a high level.
Ahuge well done to Krithika, who took part in IRONKIDS yesterday and ran an impressive 1km without stopping!
IRONKIDS UK is all about participation, fun, and encouraging children to lead healthy, active lives.
What an amazing achievement – we’re so proud of her determination and enthusiasm.
We are incredibly proud to share that Ivy’s brilliant drawing, The Claw Machine, has been selected for both the online and on-site exhibitions at the Royal Academy of Arts’ Young Artists’ Summer Show 2025.
Out of more than 23,000 submissions, only a small number were chosen for display at the Royal Academy – making this an exceptional achievement!
The exhibition runs from 15 July to 10 August, and Ivy plans to visit the RA over the summer and share a photo with her artwork – we can’t wait to see it!
Well done, Ivy!
Jeevan had an unforgettable day meeting Sir Mo Farah – one of the greatest long-distance runners of all time and a true sporting inspiration. What an incredible experience and a memory to cherish!
We were thrilled to hear about Seth’s incredible performance as the lead in a traditional Chinese Lion Dance. The Lion Dance is deeply rooted in Chinese cultural heritage and is often performed at important events such as Chinese New Year, festivals, and community celebrations. It is believed to ward off evil spirits and bring prosperity and good luck.
Seth is a proud member of the Kong Yee Lion Team. He trains every Saturday to build the strength, stamina, and agility required for this demanding art – all developed through traditional Chinese martial arts. As the lead performer, he carries the lion’s head, a role that requires dedication and exceptional physical control.
We are incredibly proud of Seth for embracing and sharing such a meaningful cultural tradition.
Our four Year 6 boys – Jaden, Aiden, Ibrahim, and Rayyan – did themselves and Hallfield extremely proud in the recent Quiz Club Maths competition. Out of hundreds of schools entering, their team made it to the final 40 and secured an outstanding 3rd place!
Leading with only five questions left, their final position speaks volumes about the phenomenal mathematical fluency and problem-solving skills on display at Hallfield.
A special mention must also go to Jaden for his performance in the heats. He finished as the top individual player out of over 300 pupils involved from around the UK!
A huge well done and congratulations to the boys for their brilliant teamwork, remarkable team spirit, and exceptional mathematical acumen!
Well done to all the children who participated in the Junior Maths Challenge! We are proud to announce an impressive number of award winners – especially considering the challenge is designed primarily for Year 8s, and to earn an award, students must finish in the top 50% of all participants across the UK.
Having so many Year 6 and Year 5 award winners is extraordinary, along with two bronze award winners in Year 4! This is a true testament to the exceptional quality of mathematicians at Hallfield.
Jasper, George, and Vardhan represented Hallfield School excellently at the IAPS Squash Championship, showing great sportsmanship and a positive mindset throughout. All three boys won multiple matches against unfamiliar – and in some cases higher-seeded – opponents.
Jasper played some brilliant squash, winning 3 out of 4 of his matches on the second day. George and Vardhan both advanced to the semi-finals of the Cup, where they competed on Nottingham’s glass court in front of an excited crowd. Facing very strong opponents, they delivered some of the best squash seen in the tournament.
George and Vardhan then faced each other in a competitive but friendly bronze medal play-off. After a tight game, Vardhan came away with a 2–1 victory.
Most importantly, all three boys demonstrated excellent manners toward their opponents and referees – and clearly had a great time. Well done, boys!
Congratulations to Year 3 cricketer Aariyan for a standout performance in the recent match against Eversfield! Aariyan took a hat trick and scored an impressive 23 runs, playing a key role in securing the win for Hallfield.
Well done, Aariyan — keep up the fantastic work!
Pre-Prep pupils brought energy, enthusiasm, and big smiles to their Sports Day! From sprints to fun team relays, it was wonderful to see the children confidently showing off the skills they’ve been practising in their PE lessons.
It was a fantastic day of teamwork, cheering, and achievement – well done to all!
Prep Sports Day was a spectacular display of athleticism and determination. Pupils pushed themselves to new heights, breaking several records and showing incredible effort throughout the day. Their focus, sportsmanship, and pride in representing their Houses made for an inspiring event. We are immensely proud of every single one of them!
We were thrilled to welcome award-winning author and spoken word artist Jaspreet Kaur (Behind the Netra) to Hallfield for an inspiring Hallfield Insights session.
Her talk, “Read, Rise and Shine: How Literacy Builds Confidence and Empowers Young Minds,” reminded us of the true power of storytelling – not only to educate but also to connect, heal, and empower.
One quote that beautifully captures the spirit of her message is:
“Books should be mirrors. Books should be windows. Books should be doors...”
A huge thank you to Jaspreet for visiting us and sharing her passion, wisdom, and warmth. Her words will stay with us for a long time to come.
Our Hallfield community came together to remember VE Day with a special ceremony. The children proudly raised the flag and sang God Save the King, reflecting on the sacrifices made for peace and freedom. Thomas Franks, our in-house catering team, treated us to a feast fit for a king!
Hallfield School was proud to support the China–UK Cultural Exchange Programme 2025, a landmark initiative that brought together over 150 young musicians from the UK and China to celebrate culture, creativity, and collaboration through music.
The week-long programme culminated in a spectacular Gala Concert, featuring outstanding performances by the Nanjing Youth Orchestra, Guangzhou Traditional Chinese Orchestra, and Birmingham’s own Summerleaze Quartet. Audiences were treated to a vibrant programme blending Western classical favourites with the rich sounds of traditional Chinese music, including two world premieres composed especially for the event.
The concert was a unique celebration of international friendship and musical harmony, leaving all who attended inspired by the power of cultural exchange.
Speech and Prize Giving Day 2025 was a wonderful morning of celebration. The event began with excellent singing from pupils in Year 1 through to Year 8, followed by a captivating address and performance from our guest speaker, Nicholas McCarthy.
Congratulations to all our prize winners!
Hallfield Radio ran a special show to honour VE Day. Producers and presenters selected a range of wartime hits, including tunes by Glenn Miller and Vera Lynn, which were streamed live into the Bistro while pupils and staff enjoyed their special VE Daythemed lunch.
In addition to playing 1940s classics, the radio team entertained listeners with fascinating wartime facts about rationing, evacuation, and trivia. Mr Morrow even joined in with a song request!
Japmeh Kaur Gujral, one of our own Old Hallfieldians, and renowned performance poet
Ayan Aden visited the school this week to speak about poetry. They spent time with Pre-Prep and Year 4 pupils, sharing their experiences and guiding them in writing their own poems.
Ayan was recently named Birmingham Poet Laureate for 2024–26, while 12-year-old Japmeh is the new Birmingham Young Poet Laureate. During their tenures, they will write for special occasions and inspire others through workshops and mentoring – continuing to shine a spotlight on poetry across the city.
Thank you to both Ayan and Japmeh for coming in and inspiring our pupils!
We were delighted to welcome parents of children in Years 2–4 to a special writing workshop.
The event began with an insightful presentation from Ms Jackson, our Head of English in Prep, who shared how writing is taught and developed at Hallfield, along with practical tips for supporting writing at home.
Parents then joined their children in the classroom for hands-on writing activities. It was wonderful to see such enthusiasm and teamwork, and we loved watching families get creative together.
Thank you to everyone who attended and helped make the workshop such a success!
Children in Oaks and Maples had a fantastic time visiting Ash End House Children’s Farm. From feeding and meeting the animals to playing in the outdoor play area, the day was filled with hands-on fun and new experiences.
The children showed great curiosity and enthusiasm as they explored the farm, sat on straw bales to learn about the animals, and enjoyed a well-earned ice lolly after lunch!
A big thank you to the staff and volunteers who helped make the day so special!
Our EYFS pupils were thrilled to officially open their brand-new pirate ship, expertly built by our talented Estates Team!
The opening ceremony was full of fun, featuring a bottle of water smashed on the ship to launch it in true pirate style. After the ceremony, all Foundation pupils took part in a treasure hunt adventure, following hidden clues across the playground in search of gold.
Their efforts were rewarded with chocolate coins and activity packs, making it a day to remember for our youngest explorers.
A huge thank you to our Estates Team for creating such a magical addition – the adventures have only just begun!
Reception children dived into The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle, using it as inspiration for activities across Literacy and Maths. They wrote fruit descriptions using their phonic knowledge and explored shapes with tangrams. The children also learned about the butterfly life cycle, continued caring for their bean plants, and built on their phonics skills in Read Write Inc. sessions.
Year 1 have been developing their comprehension skills through a text about cowboys in North America. They have been challenging themselves to understand key details, make inferences, and engage thoughtfully with the content.
Year 1 have been exploring the fascinating world of animals in Science! They’ve been learning about the five main animal groups–reptiles, fish, mammals, amphibians, and birds–and discovering their unique features, diets (herbivore, omnivore, or carnivore), and whether they have a backbone.
If you noticed a fishy smell near Year 1, you weren’t imagining it! The children had a hands-on experience with real fish, closely examining and labelling their body parts. It was a fun, sensory learning experience they won’t forget anytime soon!
Year 1 explored the sense of taste as part of their learning about the five senses. They discovered the five main taste buds – sweet, sour, salty, bitter, and umami. To put their knowledge to the test, they tried different flavours and identified which taste buds were tingling. From sweet chocolate to sour lemons, there were plenty of funny faces, brave little taste buds, and lots of giggles!
Our Reception to Year 2 pupils got creative with “The Art of Recycling!” – a special project led by our brilliant Pre-Prep School Council.
Children brought in their incredible recycled art creations made from cardboard boxes, toilet rolls, bottles and more – proving that imagination has no limits when it comes to sustainability!
A huge well done to all who took part – we were blown away by your creativity!
Year 1 had a fantastic day at Twycross Zoo. From spotting monkeys and giraffes to learning about habitats and animal behaviours, our young explorers enjoyed a hands-on adventure that brought their Science and Geography lessons vividly to life.
It was a day full of learning and plenty of curious questions!
ell done to all our Pre-Prep, Prep, and Senior Gold Card winners! We hope you enjoyed your delicious ice cream treats! GOLD CARD WINNERS!
Our Year 4 pupils have been stepping back in time as part of their humanities learning, exploring the fascinating world of the Vikings!
They’ve been busy studying ancient runes, crafting Viking jewellery, and competing in exciting Viking-inspired challenges. Their enthusiasm came alive during some dramatic Viking workshops that really brought history to life.
A huge well done to all our young Norse explorers – your enthusiasm is truly legendary!
Year 6 have been diving into the wonders of human circulation. From discovering the different components of blood – even making their own ‘model blood’ – to building plasticine hearts, they’ve brought biology to life. They’ve also explored how the heart works as two pumps, moving blood between the lungs and the body. A hands-on, heart-smart learning journey!
Year 3 have been creating clay food sculptures inspired by the artist Claes Oldenburg. We’re excited for their masterpieces to be fired and painted!
Our Year 6 and Senior pupils recently enjoyed an engaging and thoughtprovoking careers talk with physiotherapist Stephen Miller.
Stephen provided fascinating insights into the world of physiotherapy, sharing stories from his early career, his passion for helping others, and the diverse paths within the profession. He encouraged pupils to think about their futures and the importance of gaining experience and exploring interests early on.
A key theme Stephen introduced was the Japanese concept of “ikigai” – meaning your reason for being. The talk left pupils feeling inspired and excited about their own futures, and may even have sparked a few aspiring physiotherapists among them!
We’re very grateful to Stephen for sharing his time, insight, and passion with us.
If you or someone you know would be interested in giving a careers talk to our pupils, please contact Mrs Florida-James at cfjames@hallfieldschool.co.uk – we’d love to hear from you!
Year 6 and Seniors have been getting creative with glass! They’ve been learning the art of glass cutting and fusing to create beautiful decorative pieces – all while mastering safe and sensible handling techniques.
Year 3 have been learning about measuring, focusing on the key concepts of volume and capacity. In this lesson, they were tasked with identifying the volume of liquid and the total capacity each jug could hold.
We celebrated our Year 6 leavers with a wonderful end-of-year get-together. It was a fantastic event filled with games, delicious food, and time with friends. Good luck Year 6 – enjoy the summer, and we look forward to seeing you at future Old Hallfieldian events!
JD and 3EK enjoyed a fantastic virtual visit from author Justyn Edwards, creator of The Great Fox Illusion series. The children were captivated as Justyn read the first chapter of his book and even performed a magic trick live during the session! A jar of jelly beans and a surprise prediction left the pupils amazed and talking about it for the rest of the day. The Great Fox Illusion is a highly recommended read for children who love mystery and magic.
THE
Talented bakers from Prep and Seniors wowed us all in the Hallfield Great Brownie Bake-Off! After weeks of researching, practising, and perfecting their recipes, the children arrived prepared and full of excitement – ready to rise to the challenge.
Each pupil brought their own carefully measured ingredients, nut-free recipes, and beautifully presented bakes. The judging panel was seriously impressed by their creativity, confidence, and attention to detail. From taste and texture to presentation and process, our young chefs truly excelled!
Well done to all the children for their hard work and enthusiasm – you were amazing!
Rain didn’t stop our Seniors–they powered through a high-energy workout in the fitness suite during their sports session, even as the storm raged outside!
Seniors have been getting creative with clay, crafting beautiful coil pots inspired by ceramicist Anne Haworth. They worked hard and thoroughly enjoyed learning this new technique!
We held a farewell event for our Year 8 students in Hallfield Seniors as they prepare to move on to new schools. They were joined by their Year 7 peers, along with some familiar faces from past cohorts who returned for the occasion. Parents, siblings, and teachers also attended, enjoying food and conversation in a relaxed, friendly atmosphere. It was a wonderful chance to reconnect, reflect, and say goodbye as the students prepare for their next steps.
Our Seniors had an amazing time on their outing to Escape Hunt –putting their problem-solving skills to the test and cracking the code to fun! It was a brilliant opportunity for teamwork, laughter, and a little healthy competition as they worked together to solve puzzles and beat the clock. We are going to miss our Year 8 pupils as they move on to their new senior schools!
Audience members were delighted by another Teatime Concert, with pupils from Year 4 to Year 7 performing a captivating selection of musical pieces full of genuine enthusiasm. A huge well done to all involved, including our dedicated and passionate music teachers.
All of our Year 5 pupils have been learning to play the jSax during their Music lessons – and their enthusiasm has been a joy to see (and hear)! The project aims to inspire more children to take up the saxophone here at Hallfield, and it has certainly struck a chord with our young musicians.
As the jSax scheme concludes, pupils showcased their progress in a special Year 5 jSax Concert for parents. It was a fantastic celebration of their hard work, talent, and musical growth– the future is bright for these rising saxophone stars!
Year 2’s Fairy Tale Showcase was a magical morning to remember! 2NC captivated us with The Elves and the Shoemaker, 2EB delighted us with The Towering Turnip, and 2JJ charmed us with The Gingerbread Man. The performances were filled with wonderful acting, singing, and dancing, inspiring us with timeless lessons. The pupils performed excellently, with outstanding energy and character portrayals.
Well done, Year 2! We eagerly anticipate your future productions.
We enjoyed a wonderful evening at our Music Scholars’ Concert. A huge well done to all the pupils who performed – your dedication and practice truly shone through in every note. Bravo!
Seniors and Year 6 pupils have been taking part in exciting Glamba Drumming sessions during their music lessons. Led by Nick Ledbury – creator of Glamba Drumming and a BBC star – these workshops offer a hands-on introduction to African drumming traditions.
Pupils immersed themselves in rhythm, teamwork, and cultural exploration. This brilliant experience also perfectly prepares them for their upcoming production of The Lion King, deepening their understanding of African music and adding authenticity to their performance!
The second annual Hallfield Music Prom, held on Monday 16th June, was a brilliant celebration of our talented instrumental ensembles and Prep choirs. The concert was filled with energy and passion, culminating in a joyful, massed performance of Edward Elgar’s Land of Hope and Glory – with the audience joining in enthusiastically!

The Lion King Jr. has roared to a close–and what an unforgettable performance it was! Our incredible Year 6, 7, and 8 pupils lit up the stage with energy, talent, and heart, bringing the savannah to life in true Hallfield style.
A huge bravo to the entire cast, crew, and everyone behind the scenes who made this magical production possible. Want to see what went on behind the scenes? Read the full blog post and relive the highlights.
On Saturday night, two of our talented pupils, Handuo and James, performed alongside the Midland Chamber Orchestra, our orchestra in residence. The concert, held at St. Hilda’s Church in Smethwick, featured stunning pieces by Haydn, Rosetti, and Mozart.
It was a fantastic evening, and both James and Handuo showed true professionalism playing with an adult orchestra. Handuo has also recently passed his Grade 8 violin, with distinction! That makes him ten years old and with two Grade 8s under his belt for both piano and violin!
Our Pre-Prep pupils took to the stage for their much-anticipated Summer Concert–and what a wonderful celebration it was! The children sang, danced, and performed with confidence and enthusiasm, filling the hall with smiles and applause.
A big thank you to our Pre-Prep staff for preparing the children so beautifully, and to all the families who came along to support them. We’re already excited to see how these young performers continue to grow and flourish in the years ahead!

Congratulations to Alex on winning his very first gold medal in chess at the Solihull Junior Open! Competing in the Under 11 D category, he secured an impressive 4 wins and 1 draw. We’re all incredibly proud of his success!
We are proud of our support for charities and the thousands of pounds that Hallfield students have raised for worthy causes.
We’re incredibly proud of Giaan (10) and Dani (8), who took part in their very first race at the AJ Bell Junior & Mini Great Birmingham Run 2025 this Saturday. Despite a few nerves, they showed great determination and enthusiasm throughout the event.
Giaan and Dani ran to raise £1,200 for Monarch’s Mutts Dog Rescue, a local charity dedicated to finding loving homes for dogs. This cause is close to their hearts, as their family has previously adopted a dog from Monarch’s Mutts and witnessed the amazing work the charity does.
Thanks to their efforts and the support of the community, they are well on their way to reaching their fundraising goal, helping Monarch’s Mutts continue its vital work. Well done to both of them for making such a difference!
Well done to Alivia and Hania for their fantastic fundraising efforts at the PSA Picnic! The duo raised an impressive £600 for the RSPCA through a JustGiving page and a popular bake sale. We are incredibly proud of their kindness, initiative, and determination to support animal welfare.
The PSA would like to thank everyone who attended the Founders Day Ball earlier this year and generously donated to the chosen charity, Edward’s Trust. These contributions will provide vital support to children and families facing bereavement, offering counselling, wellbeing services, and a compassionate community during their most challenging times.
Aspecial mention goes to Elyssa, Adesh, Alizah and all the children who organised their own fundraising initiatives. Together, they contributed over £1,500 – a fantastic achievement that reflects their kindness, determination and community spirit.
We were delighted to host our annual Old Hallfieldian Cricket Match – a much-loved tradition that brings together alumni both old and new. With the evening sun casting a golden glow over the pitch, the atmosphere was warm, welcoming, and filled with friendly competition.
It was a fantastic opportunity to reconnect, share stories, and enjoy a lively game of cricket in true Hallfield spirit. Thank you to everyone who joined us and helped make it such a memorable occasion!
We were delighted to hear from the family of former Hallfield pupils Jai and Hari, who have both recently signed two-year contracts with Category One football club Stoke City – an outstanding achievement! They’ll be making their official debut at a Premier League tournament in Liverpool this weekend.
Their sporting success goes well beyond the football pitch. Representing Bromsgrove School in athletics, Hari broke a 30-year-old school high jump record with an impressive leap of 1.6m and also claimed victory in the 100m sprint with a time of 13 seconds. Meanwhile, Jai ran the 80m hurdles in 12.6 seconds – beating the national Year 8 champion – and won the long jump with a jump of 5.10m.
We’re incredibly proud of Jai and Hari’s continued achievements and hope to welcome them back to Hallfield soon – academy schedule permitting!
We welcomed back our Class of 2024 – pupils who completed Year 6 in July – for a special reunion event.
It was a wonderful evening full of smiles, laughter, and shared memories, as our former Hallfieldians returned to the school grounds to reminisce about their time at Hallfield. We were delighted with the fantastic turnout, and the beautiful weather made the occasion even more enjoyable!

We were delighted when Chris Hood (OH 19541960) got in touch after reading an article on our website by one of his Hallfield contemporaries, James Houston.
“I recently came across James Houston’s recollections of boarding at Hallfield in the 1950s, written a few years ago, and what he wrote brought back many vivid memories for me. I was in the same class as James Houston and several of the other names he mentioned. One of them was Peter Raynor, who was phenomenally clever. He was the son of a professor of metallurgy (I think) at the University of Birmingham and unsurprisingly became a highly respected professor himself. I’m still in touch with him. Apart from the names James Houston mentions from that time, I also remember Scott Wilson, Justin Pinkess, John Howard, Nick Whitehouse, Roger Bowen, Simon Green, Gabriel Fisher, Hugh Mason, Anthony Alabaster, and a boy called Faber who had the bed next to mine in the Maple Bank dormitory. I can’t recall his first name if I ever knew – we all called each other by surnames or nicknames in those days.”
“I remember the teachers James mentions, including Miss Morton, whose music and singing lessons I loved. She was the only person I encountered in my whole life who thought I was able to sing, so I bless her for that! I also remember Mrs Fisher, the Latin master’s wife, who had lost a leg when run over by a tram in early life. I think she taught us art and I can remember her supervising bathtimes as well, which must have been a thankless task! It would have been a once-a-week event in those unenlightened days.
“To James’s list of teachers, I could also add Miss Flint, who taught maths and whose quiet encouragement helped me to grapple with that subject in my early years at Hallfield. I think she also ran the school branch of the Scripture Union, and I can remember reading Bible stories with her.
“I recall Mr Organ who taught geography with great rigour (it was as close as we got to social science in those days), and Mr Thorburn who was extremely proud of the highly polished Morris Minor that he drove. We had a rather fierce ex-military gym teacher who I think was called Mr Salt.”
BOARDING AT HALLFIELD IN THE 1950S
“I went on the school trip to Scheveningen that James mentions - it was my first ever trip abroad and I was very excited about it. I remember how clean and up to date the Netherlands seemed back then, against Birmingham where all the buildings were blackened with coal smoke and there were still many gaps from buildings destroyed by World War II bombing.”
“The school was on a split site either side of the railway track in those days, and we walked in ‘crocodiles’ between the two sites. Hallfield was on one side and the other side was called Maple Bank, a large Victorian house with a ha-ha wall and a beautiful copper beech tree in the former garden which was divided into a car park and a large play area. Maple Bank was where the headmaster, Mr. Rigby, had his flat, and housed the recreation room, the junior classrooms and dormitories for the younger boys. There was at least one dormitory for seniors in Hallfield, and before I left, I remember scribbling my name in pencil behind one of the shutters. It might still be there for all I know!
“Beside Maple Bank was a place called Widdrington to which we were forbidden to go, on pain of caning or worse (but of course we did). It was a derelict and overgrown wilderness, and I think it was the site of what had once been a big house like Maple Bank which had been demolished or maybe bombed. We had our own names for various places in this site - ‘Pluto’ is the only one I remember, and it must have been at the centre of the estate, so it seemed very daring to go there.”
“What a long time ago all that seems now, but it was a happy time for me.”
- Chris Hood (1954-60)
Megna and Dia successfully completed the challenge of hiking Mam Tor in the Peak District as part of Megna’s Hallfield Challenge.
Accompanied by her family, Megna tackled the 517-metre climb with enthusiasm and determination, raising an impressive £445 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Megna’s motivation to support children in need gave her adventure a meaningful purpose. Her dedication not only showcases her adventurous spirit but also reflects a strong sense of compassion and community responsibility.
Year 3 pupils took part in the AJ Bell Mini Marathon as part of their Hallfield Challenge activities. Declan raised an impressive £1,500 for Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Congratulations to all who participated!
Over 150 members of the Hallfield community came together for the Hallfield Challenge Walk in the Malvern Hills. Starting at British Camp, children from Foundation to Year 8 took part in the event. It was a fantastic day, with the community spirit evident to other visitors who were impressed by the children’s resilience and determination.
The children have worked incredibly hard to earn their Hallfield Challenge badges this year, and their perseverance during the walk was inspiring. It was also wonderful to spend time with the parents who have supported them throughout.
Pupils in Pre-Prep and Prep have fully embraced the Hallfield Challenge, and we hope they continue their efforts over the summer, preparing for the next challenge in September.
As part of the Hallfield Challenge, our Seniors pupils spent Saturday night camping at Woodside Lodges, Ledbury, before setting off on their long-distance walk in the stunning Malvern Hills.
They pitched tents around a central camp, enjoyed some relaxing time in the shade, and as evening fell, gathered for a hearty camp meal. The evening ended with hot chocolate and marshmallow toasting by the campfire – moments that will create lasting memories.
After a restful night, the group rose early to break camp, pack up, and prepare packed lunches before beginning their walk.
Throughout the experience, the pupils demonstrated kindness, teamwork, and resilience. Huge thanks to Mr Dewhirst and Mrs Wright for making this unforgettable journey possible!
As part of their Hallfield Challenge, a group of pupils showed wonderful initiative by organising charity stalls in school. With creativity and enthusiasm, they set up on the field and playground during lunchtimes, offering fun and engaging activities for their peers.
Children across the school brought in small donations to take part, helping raise money while enjoying the stalls.
Thanks to their efforts–and the generosity of the Hallfield community–all proceeds will be donated to Edward’s Trust, a local charity offering free, specialist bereavement support to families across the West Midlands.
Please continue to send form tutors and Mr Dewhirst any photos or videos of your children doing their challenges: jdewhirst@hallfieldschool.co.uk
Reception had a fantastic day at Wonderland Telford! The children behaved beautifully and thoroughly enjoyed exploring, playing, and creating wonderful memories together.
Year 6 visited the historic Bletchley Park – an exciting chance to experience cross-curricular learning in a real-world setting. The pupils were a credit to Hallfield, engaging enthusiastically with the museum’s rich history. They especially enjoyed trying out a real Enigma machine and stepping into the shoes of Bletchley codebreakers during a guided tour and learning session with Bletchley staff. Who knows – maybe we have future GCHQ codebreakers among them!
A big thank you to all the staff who got up bright and early to ensure the group had a full day to explore.
Foundation children had a fantastic day at Ash End House Children’s Farm. They met a variety of animals, played in the outdoor area, and enjoyed a well-earned ice lolly after lunch! This hands-on trip was a wonderful way to bring their learning to life and explore the outdoors. Thanks to all staff and helpers who made the day so memorable for our youngest learners.
THEIR FIRST EVER RESIDENTIAL!
Year 2 pupils went on their first ever residential trip – and what a fantastic adventure it was! From exploring the underground tunnels at the Peak District Mining Museum to conquering zip wires and high ropes at Gulliver’s Kingdom, the children enjoyed a fun-filled journey full of friendship and personal growth.
This special trip helped build their independence and teamwork while creating memories to cherish for years to come.
Read more about their experience and see the full photo gallery on our blog!

We’re also grateful to Costco, Perry Uniform, La Pop, and Chung Ying for their generous raffle prize donations, which helped make our raffle a big hit!
All proceeds will go towards future PSA events and activities that benefit the children and families at Hallfield.
