Free Hand Drawing in Architecture | Deviant Drawing Assoc. Prof. Dr. Aslıhan Şenel Res. Asist. Buse Özçelik This course, which is a traveling studio, explores the methods of representation and expression in architecture. Theoretical discussions and on-site productions in different techniques work on the perception, visualization and expression of architecture. With the representation, the aim is not only to express the architecture, but also to understand it in place and with different techniques. The perception of the place is not only by looking at it, but the difficulty we encounter while trying to explain it starts to be open to exploration by using different techniques. With this working method that decodes architecture and the city, it concentrates on thinking about the city and architecture.

01.settling into moment Taşkışla | week. 1

In this exercise as a group, we used the sections of the movie ‘Kill Bill’. We tried to make a con tinous drawing by projecting and moving the view on the paper. In the movie different scenes shows different perspectives of spaces and characters con tinuously with movement of camera. With this way different characters and spaces link with each other and the movement of the characters and spaces let us read the whole space.

02.censored TaĹ&#x;kÄąĹ&#x;la | week. 2

In this work as a group, a structural collage that questioned the censor in ancient times through now is builded. We placed some coloums that censored with hands in the base. But censor does not work because of the transparency of the material. After building the structure we made trials with light. With different perspectives, different angles we tried to explore some spatial connections. When the shadow and model itself combined, they made a different model that produces different elements.

03.imperfection.1 YKY | week. 3

This exercise was practice to use our inefficient hand for drawing. The first drawing is a perspective from stairs inside the YapÄąkredi building. When drawing I realized that I give more attention and focus on direct lines. This tactic lets me more control the line and focus on details.

In the second drawing, I tried to draw the details inside the building with different body parts. in the top drawing, I use my mouth and the drawing at the bottom I use my both hands at the same time. These were more difficult than left hand. Beacuse it was difficult to control line. Anyway both technics were efficient for giving us different opportunuties to experiment.

03.imperfection.2 BeyoÄ&#x;lu | week. 3

In this exercise we followed a route and made a continuos drawing while walking . It was important to consider to continuous building elements and how they interact with each other. It was difficult to draw while walking but it lets me see how the environment, building elements, spaces change and how they connect with each other.

04.future statigraphy.1 Sultanahmet, Mosaic Museum | week. 4

In the museum we worked on a new method whis is archeological excavation at the drawing. We took different sections of the existing structure on top with different oil pastel layers. After that we scraped to covering layer. with this way we tried to create different excavation sections from existing sections. Scraping different layers lets us to see different spaces to their thicknesses.

8

04.future statigraphy.2 Sanatçılar Çarşısı | week. 4

Same method repeated at ‘sanatçılar çarşısı’. We took section from place. but this time we scraped the covering layer for building a future scenario what can remain from current space. While I was scraping, I imagined that just remain some textures from different continuing environmental elements and I wanted to show how these textures can connect with each other.

05. field trip Tarsus, Ä°skenderun, Hatay, Adana | week. 5

Along with the trip within the scope of the project course, the architecture of the cities, which have completely different features, was researched by applying different techniques.

05. field trip.1 Tarsus, | week. 5

Worked on read the traces of time through the buildings in tarsus, the first point of the trip. An attempt was made to visualize these traces with dotting or hatching method.

10

05. field trip.2 Ä°skenderum, | week. 5

The movement of the waves and the wind were tried to be expressed with water color. The movement of the water, the changes it has undergone, the different colors it has received are tried to be represented together with the flow of the paint which is specific to its technique.

05. field trip.3 Hatay, St. Pierre Church, | week. 5

In this study, it was tried to be understood and expressed the light and space coming into the church by using coal pen engraving method.

11

05. field trip.4 Hatay, Archeology Museum | week. 5

In this study, a story was tried to be followed while visiting the museum while watching inside. In the first drawing, pottery belonging to different periods of human history was examined chronologically and this was documented as everyday dream objects. In the next drawing, a series of drawings were tried to be created by combining mythological characters in the museum.

12

05. field trip.5 Hatay, | week. 5

A special food was selected for the region and its production process was researched . As a group, we chose doner in locally popular food market. Then we documented the steps from its process to the shop to the customer.

05. field trip.6 Hatay, | week. 5

In this exercise, we visited the Hatay bazaar and investigated the transitions and experiences between certain places. Since the drawing process took a long time, we also had the opportunity to examine the situations of the spaces at different times. Thus, all these transition moments created a route for us.

15

05. field trip.7 Hatay, SamandaÄ&#x; BeĹ&#x;ik Cave | week. 5

In this region, the spaces of the cave were explored by scraping oil pastels. In addition, some remarkable details were tried to be documented by searching in line.

16

05. field trip.9 Adana, | week. 5

The atmosphere of the city was researched by choosing and collecting a material on a chosen concept while traveling through the streets of Adana. Due to the fact that the

ters of the mayor involved in the entire city. In the end, a map was created to create the political identity of the city along with the route. 17

06. twistorama.1 Tahtakale | week. 7

In this week we workd on perceptional vision. How we can see the environment wtihout looking around directly. We thinked that can vision change with motion, light and shadow, reflection and more than that and tried to perceive the environment with different changing elements. on the top of the drawings, tried to perceive and draw the tree from different frames and reflections. When I moved the reflection of the tree has changed and it becomes unstable element. I tried to draw this motion. drawing at the bottom, I followed the shadows on the ground. I tried to draw how shadows are moving with motion of environmental elements and also me and how they connects with each other. 18

06. twistorama.2 Tahtakale | week. 7

At the second part of lesson we found different devices to distort and change our visions. I used two different objects to distort the view. First one was the soda bootle. I tried to see textures of the wall with different water levels and different perspectives. with changing water levels and pespectives, reflections have changed. Iq tried to draw these different reflections. second device was the tulle. I choose tulle because it can create different frames or change the visibility of the rear object when it layers. I tried to draw these different visions.

07. time machine.1 Salt BeyoÄ&#x;lu | week. 8

At the first part of the lesson we researched different characters and their stories in Istanbul Encylopedia by ReĹ&#x;ad Ekrem Koçu. It includes different drawings and texts to represent of different characters and their apperances, their legends in the time. After research we choose a character and its story and redrawn them. 20

07. time machine.2 Hazzopulo Passage| week. 8

At the second part of the lesson we researched different characters and their stories in the city, beyoÄ&#x;lu. I observed a well-known character which is Mustafa Amca in Hazzopulo passage. Drawing shows the locations and traces of their movement in his place. He sometimes rest in a corner, brings tea, talks with people and sometimes watches me while I am drawing him. Drawing shows all these different movements and his daillife in his place. 21

08. printing the body TaĹ&#x;kÄąĹ&#x;la | week. 9

In this week we tried different techinque with is linol printing to represent ourselves with movement. we drawn ourselves on linoleum, engrave it, paint it with ink and print it to paper. thanks to the fact that linoleum can be carved and printed several times, it allows to represent different moments of movement.

09. ink wash Pera Museum, Şişhane| week. 11

Before made this work, we met in pera müzesi for chineese ink art exhibition. after experienced to different ink techniques, we worked with ink in şişhane. Firstly we made a collective panoramic landscape with ink and after that we tried to represent the movements without painting. I tried to use flow of ink to represent the movement in urban traffic.

23

10. city of crossed destinies GĂźlhane, Istanbul Archeology Museum | week. 13
