“Underlying Meaning” Project

Paintings 2023-2025

Underlying Meaning” is a project that explores the complex portrayals of women in art, focusing on the themes of objectification, control, and the historical context of femininity. Through my artistic practice, I aim to challenge the deeply ingrained narratives that have shaped societal perceptions of women by encouraging viewers to engage critically with representations of femininity.

Femininity is a series of ideas and concepts shaped by each culture and historical moment. It is clear that while culture evolves, the customs and values underpinning femininity have remained relatively constant, recurring across cultures and epochs and normalized through the artistic images created within each society. These representations are internalized, perpetuated, and ultimately normalized.

Classic paintings act as containers, time travelers of past social and political values and symbols framed by the male gaze. Paintings from the past, now considered masterpieces and modern media, share a common theme: controlling and constructing behavioral attitudes toward women, defining beauty and femininity.

In this series, I analyze the representations of iconic masterpieces in art history and how they embody the narratives of objectification and misogyny. These narratives reflect the messages of the social standards of civilization and how they have been accepted through glorifying “great art and great masters,” which normalize these concepts and transmit them over time as part of “high culture.”
