In the Hot Seat

Hair spoke to Goldwell’s UK Ambassador, Mark Leeson, one of the most revered multi-award winning names in the industry. Mark is renowned for nurturing his hugely talented art team, who have followed him to also win multiple honours

An unstoppable force, Mark’s career began in the 1980’s and finds him today running a ‘super salon’ in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire, offering the ultimate hairdressing experience in a truly luxurious and tranquil 3,000 square foot setting, in which clients can enjoy top-to-toe treatments.

Making a name for himself early on in his career, Mark swept the board as a competition hairdresser. This foundation gave him the dynamic coupling of technical skills and precision, which remain his hallmarks. His journey has been achieved with co-Director and life partner Richard Darby, from when they ran a franchise salon together, before branching out under the eponymous Mark Leeson brand in 1996.

By the time Mark won the much-prized British Hairdresser of the Year Award in 2014, he’d notched up a truly outstanding track record, finalising for 32 British Hairdressing Awards and winning an incredible 14. Richard describes the win as a dream he knew would come true, adding: “Mark is a creative genius”.

By Mark’s own admission, his hugely talented artistic team are the backbone of the Mark Leeson brand. “We are 100 per cent team players at Mark Leeson,” says Mark. “We celebrate each and every success and believe in giving everyone an opportunity to shine. The truth is that the brand is not just about me.”

As a team, Mark Leeson are known for their immaculately executed photographic collections, combining technical expertise with commercial appeal, and cutting-edge precision with flawless, feminine style. Under Mark’s guidance, they have created an entire brand with beautiful hair at its

“We celebrate each and every success giving everyone an opportunity is that the brand is not just
MARK LEESON

You and your team have won more awards than any other in this industry, what is your secret?

The awards side of the industry is certainly a passion of ours, and it’s something that keeps us and our team motivated. We’re constantly pushing creative boundaries and we’re proud that over the years we’ve built this back catalogue of history that shows our progression as individuals and as a company. It's always about moving forward, not being stagnant in your ethos, or your creativity. Because we are constantly rotating who we put forward to enter, it keeps it fresh, and it keeps the whole team motivated. And, you know, we just love doing it We've been lucky to work with some great people over the years and we’ve perfected how we work, but we’ve also worked extremely hard at creating that brand and look we’ve become known for. Being passionate about it gives you a competitive edge – you always have to keep striving to be the best at what you do.

If you could start your career all over again, what would you do differently? Honestly, nothing. It’s all part of the journey that gets you where you are. There have been highs and lows, but I consider myself very fortunate and blessed to still be doing what I love.

What piece of advice would you give someone starting their career in hairdressing?

Being a hairdresser is not just hairdressing, you are running a business. As a salon owner you need patience and you've got to be ultra-organised. You need to be able to wear many different hats, because everything the salon represents comes from you. Whether it be apprentice, front of house, even down to a cleaner, it’s your vision that creates those roles. On the creative side, you’ve got to be an all-round visionary. I would also say that you've always got to be able to reinvent and evolve. Times do change and you've got to change with them.

When did you first start in hairdressing and what was your motivation to join the industry?

I started out at the age of 16 in a salon in Mansfield. It was the 1980s, and a great time to be entering into hairdressing. There were no limits when it came to your imagination. I began doing competition hairdressing and made a name on that circuit. Before I knew it, my career was taking off. In 1996 I was

success and believe in to shine. The truth just about me.”

offered the chance to buy one of the salons I’d been working in. Richard and I decided to take it on together.

What has been your personal highlight of your career?

Every single award win and accolade are highlights – not just for myself, but for the team too. They’re all special and important in their own ways. For sure, the most memorable win though was British Hairdresser of the Year in 2014. I’ve dedicated my life to hairdressing and to be recognised by my peers as the best in the country was incredible. It had always been the dream and I’m living proof that if you work hard and don’t give up, you can achieve anything.

You’ve recently moved to Goldwell. Tell us how that came about, and what you enjoy about working with them. We have a longstanding history and partnership with Goldwell, so when the opportunity to work with them came up, it was a very easy decision to return - very organic and natural and right. The product performance is unparalleled, but also the team and the familiarity that we have with them is special. They support us not just on the creative side but from a business perspective too. What is so important is the team's passion for what they do in every way, and there’s a very mutual respect there too.

FUN FACTS

Where do you look for hair inspiration?

It’s everywhere! I’m always looking through magazines and to the catwalks. But it’s around you too –people you see, and the quirky little elements that you can adapt and interpret into something unique.

What’s your favourite part about being a hairdresser?

It’s the possibilities. You start with the same raw material – hair but you have the power to make it look different time and time again. Hair is always being reinvented, and evolving, I love that sense of potential.

Salon or Shoot Days?

A mix of both. Shoot days are creatively a different level of buzz, but salon days are what keep us grounded.

If you could do anyone’s hair who would it be any why?

I think being influenced so much from fashion and the time of the

‘Supermodels’, I’ve always said Helena Christiansen or Christy Turlington, just for the pure beauty and glamour these girls exuded.

What made you become a hairdresser?

It felt like a very natural career for me. I grew up in the 1980s at a time when hair was influenced by bands such as Spandau Ballet and Duran Duran. All the guys were having colour in their hair, and it was a great time to be entering hairdressing. There were no limits when it came to your imagination. It’s a technical career, but creative too. It plays to my strengths.

What do you love most about your profession?

Making people happy. Hairdressing shouldn’t be underestimated. It can literally change people’s lives.

Who are your hair icons?

Anthony Mascolo and Trevor Sorbie – they both defined a moment in time.

Pure Gold

We spoke to Josh Goldsworthy, Creative Director at Goldsworthy’s, the multi award winning hair stylist who has won our very own Salon Stylist award at the HAIR AWARDS in both 2023 and 2024! Goldsworthy’s Hairdressing was founded in Swindon by Peter and Peggy Goldsworthy in 1961. With the addition of their son Steven and daughter Nicola to the business, the salon developed a whole new identity. Josh and his sister Sophie have become the third generation of hairdressers at Goldsworthy’s and the salon continues to prosper

As Goldsworthy’s is a family business, what is it like to work with family?

Working with family is a unique experience that blends personal relationships with professional ambition. It’s incredibly rewarding because we all bring our shared values and commitment to the business. There’s a deep-rooted trust and support that you don’t often find in other environments, which creates a strong foundation for both creativity and growth. Of course, it can be challenging at times as we navigate different ideas and approaches, but ultimately, the sense of pride in what we’re building together is worth every moment.

What motivated you to pursue a career in hairdressing?

Hairdressing wasn’t always something I felt drawn to. Growing up around the salon, I mostly saw it as the place my entire family was connected to – and where I spent my summer holidays by default. But at 16, I started to see how transformative hair could be, giving people a real boost of confidence. That’s when I fell in love with the creative side of hairdressing. With a solid understanding of the opportunities the industry brought to my family, especially seeing how my dad, Steven, travelled the world through hair, I realised it was a craft that perfectly combines artistry and skill. There’s something powerful about helping

people feel their best through a personalised style. I also love the business and team aspects; the chance to grow, nurture talent, and build something lasting. It’s a career that keeps evolving, and that’s incredibly inspiring.

Can you share some of the most valuable skills and techniques you’ve learned during your hairdressing career? How have these experiences shaped your approach to hairdressing?

Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to be mentored by some of the industry’s top talents, who have passed on invaluable skills and insights that have shaped me as both a hairdresser and an individual. Their guidance provided me with a strong foundation in technical precision and authenticity, and I’ve since developed my own approach to creating bespoke wigs for shows and photographic work. This has now evolved into an educational platform that I offer to elevate our industry. Mentoring younger stylists has also been invaluable, it helps me see hair from fresh perspectives, refine my techniques, and stay creatively inspired.

The beauty and fashion industry is constantly evolving. How does Goldsworthy’s stay ahead of trends?

Staying ahead in the beauty industry means being adaptable and continuously inspired by the wider cultural and fashion landscape. At Goldsworthy’s, we stay on the pulse of global trends while remaining true to our clients’ personal styles. As Creative Director, I actively seek inspiration from

international fashion weeks, art, and even emerging subcultures. We regularly attend industry events and training sessions to keep our skills sharp and innovative. This approach allows us to introduce fresh looks in a way that feels both exciting and approachable for our clients. Ultimately I take the approach of always trying, recreating or expanding on looks as this often results in a new result, texture or feel evolving my looks and artistry.

What is your favourite part of being a L’Oréal Professionnel Artist and why?

Being a L’Oréal Professionnel Artist is incredible because it connects me with a community of top stylists and innovators in the industry. My favourite part is the creative freedom and chance to experiment with new colours, products, and techniques. L’Oréal Professionnel gives me access to cutting-edge innovations in haircare and colour, which I can bring back to my salon and clients. This partnership constantly inspires me and pushes me to elevate my work. It’s also a fantastic platform to share my creativity with like-minded, talented hairdressers –whether through mentoring days with the L’Oréal ID team or taking the stage at events like the L’Oréal Colour Trophy.

Customer service is a crucial aspect of the salon experience. How do you ensure that clients receive exceptional service, and what steps have you taken to build positive relationships with them?

At Goldsworthy’s, exceptional customer service goes

“By building long-term relationships with clients, we ensure every visit is memorable and every need is met.”
JOSH GOLDSWORTHY

beyond a standard salon visit – it’s about delivering a uniquely tailored experience for every client. We’ve recently refitted our salon to include a private treatment space for clients who may prefer discretion during specialised services, such as hair replacement systems or private appointments. This addition reflects our commitment to offering a welcoming and inclusive environment where everyone’s individual needs are respected.

Our salon’s redesign also includes work-fromhome sections, allowing clients to stay productive while they enjoy their visit, as well as a coffee lounge for a comfortable, relaxed experience. Our new movable stations enable us to transform the space for education and photographic shoots, further elevating the salon’s versatility.

We take pride in the diversity of expertise we bring to the table, with specialists in L’Oreal Colour, trichology, extensions, bridal hair, and textured hair, ensuring we cater to everyone. Each client receives a personalised consultation, where we invest time

WINNER

We are delighted to announce Josh Goldsworthy as the winner of our Salon Stylist of the Year Award

to understand their lifestyle, preferences, and hair goals. With transparency at the core, we set realistic expectations and share expert advice for maintaining their look beyond the salon. By building meaningful, long-term relationships with our clients, we ensure every visit is memorable and every need is met.

As Creative Director of Goldsworthy’s Salon, what have you found most challenging in regard to business growth? One of the main challenges in growing the business is balancing creativity with the practicalities of running a salon. Business growth requires us to adapt and evolve while maintaining the quality and personal touch that our clients expect. Attracting and retaining talented team members is another focus because a strong team is essential to delivering exceptional service and staying competitive. Managing these aspects while still innovating creatively has been challenging, but it’s also what makes the role exciting and fulfilling.

HAIRCUTS4HOMELESS ARE AS VULNERABLE AS YOU ARE

Haircuts4Homeless have built a community of skilled hairdressing volunteers who give their time free of charge to provide haircuts for homeless people. Today, we are a registered charity with 56 projects across the UK – from Brighton to Birmingham; Peterborough to Portsmouth, offering regular haircuts to the homeless.

Each of the Haircuts4Homeless centres have approximately five volunteers who operate once a month giving around 25-30 haircuts. This equates to approximately 1,680 free haircuts a month; 20,160 per year.

The impact of our work is uniquely measured in smiles. We literally witness their transformation before your eyes. Their demeanour, mood and confidence boosted with the service we give. We often get thanked by a guest who had an interview and got the job; or saw their child for the first time in a long time and felt proud of their appearance. Our return rate for guests is around 50% regulars but we love it when we see a guest for the last time because it means they have been allocated accommodation and are moving on in their life.

With a little help from our friends our work can continue to grow.

Let us be your charity.

Is your hair in need of

Is your hair dry, dull and chemically abused? Then it’s time to face the facts – your hair is in desperate need of rehab

THE PROBLEM

SPLIT ENDS

Split ends occur when the ends of your hair become dry, brittle and frayed. They are caused by factors such as excessive heat styling, chemical treatments, rough handling, and environmental aggressors that can weaken the hair’s protective cuticle, leading to the splitting and fraying of the strands. Split ends are your hair’s number one enemy, making it more vulnerable to wear and tear.

REHAB

Split ends start at the bottom and make their way up like a ladder in a pair of tights. Hairdressers agree that to prevent further damage, split ends must be cut off. There isn’t a hair type that’s more prone to splitting, but if your hair constantly splits, you can guarantee it must be something you’re doing, whether it’s rough handling, over-processing, or daily heatstyling without using a heat protection.

HAIR RECOMMENDS

while colour swells the hair shaft adding the illusion of hair with more bounce. Lightweight shampoos and conditioners for fine hair won’t weigh it down and always use a volumizing product and leave-in conditioner when blow-drying. Guilty of product overload? Detox your hair using a detox shampoo.

HAIR RECOMMENDS

THE PROBLEM DAMAGED HAIR

Have you ever noticed that some of your hair strands are much shorter than the rest of your hair? It’s likely that those strands broke off, leading to shorter patches of hair.  Whether it’s been weakened by chemical processing or subjected to daily heat styling, your hair looks and feels dry and is structurally damaged.

REHAB

Rescue damaged hair with a deep conditioning treatment twice a week. You can also try putting oil through your hair such as argan, jojoba or rosemary oil before getting in the shower, massage it into the roots and leave in for around 20 minutes. Follow up by shampooing twice. This will keep brittleness at bay and create overall hair health without weighing it down. Always use heat protection when styling.

HAIR RECOMMENDS

THE PROBLEM HAIR LOSS

There are many reasons as to why you might be suffering with hair loss. Hair loss can be caused by stress, certain medications, medical conditions, poor nutrition, and in women, hormonal changes such as pregnancy and menopause. Today, roughly 85% of men, and 50% of women suffer from hair loss at some point in their lives. In the UK hair loss is one of the most common conditions so why don’t we speak up more about it?

REHAB

Supplements and good nutrition are key when dealing with hair loss, it’s important that you’re eating enough protein and other key vitamins to support healthy, strong hair. Investing in good haircare and products are also very important and can help reduce hair fall. If your hair loss is severe, we suggest seeking specialist advice.

HAIR RECOMMENDS

THE PROBLEM DANDRUFF

It’s the problem people find most embarrassing when it comes to hair. Dandruff is caused by over-production of yeast and is associated with an oily scalp. Triggers like stress, hormones, illness and even some medication can make dandruff worse.

REHAB

Always use anti-dandruff shampoos. Essential oils such as rosemary and lavender oil have great antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory properties and can go a long way in soothing dandruff symptoms. Investing in a scalp scrub is also a great way to cleanse the scalp.

THE PROBLEM OILY ROOTS

Greasy hair can stop you from looking and feeling great, often making you feel constantly dirty and unkempt. While some experts believe an oily scalp is the secret to healthy hair, others may think otherwise. It’s key to not over wash your scalp when dealing with oily roots as this can cause dryness and therefore over-stimulate your sebaceous glands.

REHAB

Dry shampoo is your best friend when dealing with oily hair. Start by cutting back washing your hair by dry shampooing or opt for a slicked back hairstyle. Grease in these styles is your best friend. Invest in a clarifying or detox shampoo and ensure that when you do wash your hair, you really wash out all the impurities, so always double shampoo. The other golden rule is don’t over stimulate the scalp by brushing or touching your hair. We all know the rule about not touching your face, that applies to your hair too. You could also be using products that are too heavy for your hair type giving the effect of greasy roots.

True or false? Do blondes have more fun – Hair Magazine asked the experts

Blonde hair has always been iconic, but the definition of the perfect blonde is changing faster than ever. Blondes might have more fun, but creating and maintaining exactly what you want involves artistry, innovation, and science, giving rise to stunning shades and textures that are more sophisticated than ever. From root taps to freehand brushstrokes and a multitude of toners and bond builders, it can feel overwhelming knowing where to start when creating that ultimate on-trend blonde. But read on, we’ve got you!

Mastering a current blonde is of course about staying up to date with trends, but it starts with understanding the foundation of perfect placement. Every blonde is unique, and so are the techniques used to achieve it. No longer do you settle for a standard halfhead of highlights. With balayage, root taps, freehand brushstrokes and intuitive toners,

Thethere are countless ways to create a bespoke blonde. Regardless of how trends evolve, the key is to consider your hair type, skin tone, and personal style when deciding where and how to place highlights, lowlights, or balayage.

Blonde is not just a colour; it’s a statement of individuality – you are likely to fall into one of two broad categories, either preferring a warm or cool tone. Danilo Giangreco, Artistic Ambassador for UKI Revlon Professional, notes a shift toward cooler hues like Frosted Nudes and Boujee Beiges. “These tones offer a softer, more controlled look compared to the previously popular icy platinum,” he says. “My go-to combination would be Revlon Professional Magnet Ultimate 9 powder for lift, paired with Color Excel Gloss 10.18 Frosted Nude toner. This pairing not only delivers beautiful results but

also nurtures blonde hair, which can be more fragile, repairing damage in just 10 minutes.”

Not to be ignored, warmer tones such as Honey and Butterscotch Blonde are increasingly popular and Rio Agor-Watts, Group Education Manager for UKI Revlon Professional notes, “These shades are ideal for clients wanting to maintain their natural warmth or brunettes looking for a lighter transition without a drastic commitment. The emphasis is on subtlety and naturallooking tones, achievable with high-lift tints or freehand techniques that allow the hair’s natural warmth to shine through.”

JR Slane from House of Keune by Bloom is an advocate of creative placement techniques. “Root taps, for instance, create a softer, more natural transition from darker roots to lighter ends,” he explains. “Freehand brushstrokes, like balayage, add dimension and movement to the hair, creating a lived-in look that is both versatile and low maintenance.”

Rio emphasises using products that protect and nourish hair throughout the colouring process. “I often use Revlon Professional Color Sublime High Lifts for a beautiful lift without the harshness of bleach,” she says.

For those preferring cooler blondes, the Revlon Professional Magnet range offers a comprehensive system that protects against pollutants and repairs damage while delivering vibrant colour.

Maintaining the perfect blonde involves more than just regular salon visits; it requires a holistic approach to hair care. Prepping the hair with bond-building products, ensures a smooth canvas for colour application, while protecting the hair from pollutants and external aggressors. Danilo always finishes his services with Revlon Professional Magnet Ultimate Daily Fix & Shield Spray and the Repairing Melting Balm, which seal split ends and adds a lightweight shine.

Moisture-rich products are always a must to maintain blonde hair’s health and sheen. “Blondes can be prone to dryness, so I always suggest using a hydrating mask once a week,” Rio advises.

WHAT’S YOUR BLONDE AMBITION?

• For a more natural blonde, consider freehand painting techniques like balayage, which allow for more organic, sun-kissed effects. Balayage gives a softer grow-out, reducing the frequency of touch-ups while maintaining a dimensional, lived-in look. For clients who prefer a bolder, more statement-making blonde, highlights with foils provide more precision and control, allowing for high contrast and drama.

• One of the hot test trends right now is the money piece – a faceframing highlight that instantly brightens the complexion and adds a fresh, youthful glow. This technique is a great entry point for clients who are curious about going blonde but aren’t ready to commit to an all-over colour.

• The modern blonde is all about soft transitions, which is where root tapping comes in. Root tapping is a technique that involves applying a slightly darker shade or toner at the roots and blending it into the lighter hair colour further down the strands. It’s perfect for clients who want to extend the time between salon visits, as it creates a more subtle grow-out and enhances the depth and dimension of the hair.

Celebrity stylist Andrew Barton sat down with some of our readers’ most asked for questions. As Brand Ambassador for Bloom Lifestyle Salons in Aberdeen, Glasgow and London – there isn’t any reason not to ask him yourself!

How do I prevent my hair colour from fading?

Colour fade depends on many factors – mainly the condition of the hair. Using conditioner each wash helps to align the hair’s cuticle scales locking in colour for longer. Using a deep conditioning mask as part of your colour care regime will also lock in moisture.

Should I wash my hair every day if it gets greasy quickly?

Andrew answered You asked

Washing hair also cleanses and cares for the scalp. Take care not to scrub the scalp and use tepid or warm water when shampooing, which does not stimulate the sebaceous glands, where oil is produced, resulting in less greasy hair. Daily shampooing is also fine. Consider when you wash your scalp it is an extension of the rest of the skin on your body and you wouldn’t dream of not washing that every day.

How do I add volume to my hair?

Volume can be added to hair through the use of various styling tools and anything that adds curl or waves generally gives the hair more volume. Heated rollers are a brilliant way of getting volume throughout the hair. Use mousse as a styling product on damp hair before styling, the polymers in the ingredients help the hair fibres giving hair more volume.

Does cutting your hair make it grow faster?

Hair grows at approx 1.5 cm per month and growth is encouraged by the blood supply to the hair's follicle which is nurtured by a nutrient rich diet, in particular eating protein rich foods. Cutting the tips of the hair will not make the hair grow faster, but it will seal the broken split ends ensuring the hair feels and looks thicker at the tips.

How do I tame frizz?

Frizzy hair is usually associated with a hair type and although there are serums and cremes that can be

cosmetically applied to the hair, they are temporary. Using deep moisturising conditioners and masks will help to close the cuticle scales helping them to be smoother and adding shine. Using heat styling tools like tongs, wands or irons will help to tame rebellious frizzy hair textures.

How can I make my hair thicker?

Using styling products like thickening sprays will give the hair a thicker appearance but this is cosmetic. Fine hair is a hair type of which there are variations and although there are many products that claim to make hair thicker, the results are temporary and cosmetic. I’ve always prided myself on my advice being honest and acceptance of a hair type is key to being happy with your hair and the solution may be in the appropriate cut and colour for your hair e.g. stands of highlights and or lowlights can give the impression of thicker hair.

What’s the best way to grow out short hair?

Ask your stylist to show you styling techniques for the

growing time. Skip a couple of trims to get that growth and maintain a healthy nutrient based diet which will help to feed the hair follicle through the blood supply. Patience is key – hair grows at approx 1.5 cm per month so set realistic targets for the growth plan. Hair accessories are a cool way of controlling hair as it grows and adding a bit of glamour.

Are expensive shampoos better for my hair?

All shampoos have a level of cleansing detergent ingredients. The higher the price of the shampoo usually means it has more other active ingredients in the bottle that may add more shine, moisture etc. Things like unique packaging, fragrances and of course marketing campaigns all add to the price of haircare. There is definitely a perceived value factor at play so how and where you buy from may give you happiness about a purchase and if it does, then it is good value for money.

How do I handle oily hair?

Oily hair may be due to a number of factors that may include hormonal balance. Hair is a protein and grows from the hair follicle at the scalp. How we feed our bodies and the lifestyle we lead all affect the follicle and also the sebaceous glands that create

oil at the scalp. Consider using tepid water when you shampoo your hair and don’t scrub the scalp. Use a gentle fingertip massage when you shampoo and always rinse the suds away well as residue shampoo can make the hair dull and lank later.

How do I get shiny hair like all the celebrities?

Shine is the holy grail of hair and can be achieved by using shine serums and sprays. Consider that when we see celebrities in pictures and on screen its usually when they have been prepared for their image with great grooming, under a spotlight or camera flash therefore often the hair looks shinier than it really is.

How do I get rid of split ends?

The only way to get rid of a split end is to seal it and that means cut it. At my London salon, The House of Keune By Bloom, I use a special micro trim technique where I cut the hair dry so I can see each of the split ends.

I've noticed my hair is thinning. Is there anything I can do to stop the hair loss? Hair loss can be caused by many factors including genetics, diet, restricted diet, ageing, menopause, medications, so not an easy one-size-fits-all answer. If you are concerned I’d advise consulting with a Trichologist who has a deep knowledge of the condition and solutions beyond a hairdresser. A visit to a Trichologist usually involves a blood test with a GP which can help identify any medical issues that may be the cause. For many years I have recommend Iain Sallis, The Hair Medic, who has achieved great results for many of my clients.

What are your tips to achieving a blow dry at home?

Achieving the perfect blow dry at home is supported by using styling products to protect and control the hair's type. Great tools like brushes and hairdryers make a big difference. If the hair is longer then set the blowdried section in a pin or roller to create a long lasting effect – as it cools the hair takes on other shapes better when set. The biggest mistake people make is to blowdry the hair from wet. Instead turn the head upside down and use the hairdryer in a rotating manner around the head focusing mainly on the roots of the hair not the tips until the hair is approx 70 per cent dry, then proceed to blow dry with a brush into the desired result.

How can I tell if the amount of hair I'm loosing on hair wash days is normal?

On average normal hair growth experiences approx 125 hairs per day of fall that you see on the shower floor etc.

Look

STEP-BY-STEP

1. CREATE THE BASE PONYTAIL

Begin by gathering the hair into a ponytail at the crown of your head. Leave hair out from the ears forward, as well as a section from just above the midpoint of your head.

2. ADD PADDING FOR VOLUME

Place padding around the ponytail as you would with a hair tie. This will provide added volume and help create the base to work on.

3. SECURE THE PADDING

Use hair grips to anchor the padding in place. Push the grips in both directions—up and down— to ensure the padding is securely fastened.

4. TWIST AND PIN THE HAIR BELOW

Take the remaining hair beneath the ponytail, twist it upwards toward the base, and maintain tension as you do so. Once at the ponytail, secure it with grips.

5. TWIST THE LEFT SIDE

Take the hair from the left side and twist it back towards the ponytail, ensuring tension is maintained. Pin it in place just below the padding.

6. TWIST THE RIGHT SIDE

Repeat the same twisting and securing process on the right side, pinning it just below the padding as well.

7. WRAP THE PONYTAIL HAIR AROUND THE PADDING

Take the hair from the ponytail and lightly twist it. Wrap it clockwise around the padding, ensuring the twisted texture is visible to add dimension to the style.

8. TWIST THE LEFT SECTION AROUND THE PADDING

Take the left-side twist and wrap it around the padding in the opposite direction (counterclockwise). Again, ensure the twist is visible. Secure it with strong hairpins for extra hold.

9. WRAP THE RIGHT SECTION

After

Next, take the right-side twist and wrap it clockwise, making sure to cover any exposed padding. Secure it into place with pins.

10. WRAP THE MIDDLE SECTION

Twist the remaining middle section of hair and wrap it counterclockwise around the padding. As you wrap, pay attention to the shape you’re creating—ensure it’s balanced and not too heavy in any one area. Pin this section securely.

11. ADD TEXTURE AND DIMENSION

Using your fingers, pinch small sections of the hair to pull them out slightly, giving the style more texture and dimension.

12. CURL THE FRINGE

Take a curling iron (I recommend the GHD 32mm Curve) and curl the fringe away from the face for added softness and volume.

13. SET THE STYLE

Finish with a light texture spray (I use Oribe Flash Form for its flexible hold). This spray will set the texture without making the hair feel stiff or sticky, ensuring your style remains touchable and natural-looking.

We’re back with Tom Smith – recently dubbed ‘The Hairvoyant’ by The Sunday Times for his ability to unpick and predict trends sending them viral on his social media. We asked him what we should be asking our stylists for in 2025

Trends Hair 2025

THEMES FOR 2025

Loud Minimalism

with Tom Smith

A macro theme in beauty of celebrating simplicity, loud minimalism will be interpreted into a focus on super healthy hair, meaning longer, thicker lengths and simple, global, glossy colours.

Embracing Texture

Texture based innovation allows natural hair patterns to be refined and polished, and we’ll see more movement and texture in mid length and very long hair in particular. Also in softly shaped fringes and bangs that frame the eyes, brow-bone and cheekbones.

Plays with Contrast

With lots of talk around ‘contrast’ in beauty when it comes to makeup, brows and hair colour, 2025 will include extremes of very low contrast – hair similar in depth and tone to the skin, and also very high contrast – very dark hair on fair skin tones and bright platinums on deeper skin tones. We’re also likely to see interesting plays with texture within colours such as a return of sun kissed balayage and potentially even more block panels and bold contrast within the same head of hair.

CUT/STYLE TRENDS 2025

XXL Curls

With new texture specific innovation such as Olaplex bond shaper allowing more people to embrace and enjoy their natural texture without irregularities or frizz, natural hair patterns can be healthier and more refined than ever. This means we’re likely to see longer, thicker and more statement making styles that celebrate texture and movement of all types. If you’ve embraced your natural texture, work on keeping it strong and healthy as it grows out longer. New curl products such as Olaplex No.10 curl defining gel might sound intimidating if you’re not used to gels – but rest assured this beautifully formulated product won’t leave your hair crispy if you massage it once its fully dried in.

Midi Last seen going thanks to the Bottom Bob, and textured the way for trends in 2025. a textured sits around styles with natural curls texture spray volume to

The

Midi Flick

going viral in 2022 and the virality of 2024’s Bell Bob, we’re going to see flicky textured mid length shapes lead for bob and mid length 2025. Ask your stylist for and layered shape that your collarbone. Best soft, messy waves or your curls if you have them, use a spray to modernise and add the result.

Anti-Fringe

We’ve had so much interest in fringe and bang shapes over the last few years 2025 is going to invite in a counter in the form of elongated face framing – no distinguishable layers or fringe shaping around the face, but lengths that sit longer than the chin and beyond providing a minimalist shape around the face and versatility in styling straight, with texture, tucked behind the ears or totally up away from the face. Ask your stylist to allow any shorter face framing lengths to grow out. Patience may be required here as your hair grows about an inch every 2 months, so be sure to keep the ends strong and avoid splitting by turning down the heat on your tools, using Olaplex No.3 and focusing it around the weaker hairline areas and being gentle with upstyles and brushing.

Brow-bone Contouring

Fringes have become a mini hairstyle in their own right and we’ll see a variety of fusions of previously popular fringe styles. Birkin Bangs, Bottleneck Bangs, Curtain Bangs, Micro Fringes and various other brow and cheekbone skimming lengths will be customised to frame the eyes with softly textured and choppy lengths. Great for those who want low commitments, these softer fringe/bang styles grow out gently and at angles meaning they don’t require regular trimming. Ask your stylist to suggest what would flatter your face best when it comes to customising your fringe area –consider the size of your forehead, whether you want to show off your eyebrows or cheekbone and ensure you’re willing to tweak them every morning – you’ll need to reset this area of your hair every day so while it can be done quickly, it does require some daily maintenance.

Muted Auburn

Messing soft coppers are a fully fledged salon staple now, and while bolder coppers were trending for the latter part of 2024, we’ll surely see a return of the natural looking strawberry blondes and chestnuts and auburns in 2025. These can be relatively low maintenance since they fade in a soft sun kissed looking way and flatter a variety of skin tones. If you feel good in yellow or rose gold jewellery that’s a good sign you’ll suit this trend – consider whether you prefer your hair lighter or darker and ask your stylist to add soft, natural looking copper, caramel and auburn tones to your hair. Natural looking coppers are always multitonal, so be open minded to highlights or soft balayage with soft copper toners too.

Minimalist Shades

Hyper-Naturals

Balayage and freehand painted techniques will return for those who are looking for lower maintenance and more textural colour results. Adding detail and interest to darker hair, and multi-tones to blonde, soft copper and even naturally grey hair, the sun kissed blended highlights will return and provide natural looking results that don’t require regular appointments to maintain. It’s natural looking, but better. Ask your stylist to hand paint naturally blended balayage highlights, focusing on the top and around the face, where the sun would naturally hit. This technique will typically provide a warm result – so be mindful if you prefer cool tones in your hair – this may not be for you.

With so much detail in technique for both blondes and brunettes available in salons now, we’ll be seeing a movement towards monochromatic simplicity – this is a single global shade coloured from root to tip, whether in fairer or deeper, warmer or cooler shades. With a real focus on shine and gloss and super healthy hair, this is a stripped back minimalist approach for even, glossy hair. Ask your stylist to use the gentlest colour possible to tone your hair all one shade. For deeper hair colours this will be easy and you’ll get super high shine – for those with lighter hair you may need multiple steps, but there’s beauty in the simplicity of one shade root to tip. The more different your target shade is to your natural colour, the more often you should expect to need your roots touched up. Avoid using permanent colour to refresh your ends each time – instead demi or semi permanent will help add more shine and if your hair is already close to your target level, they can even last longer than permanent thanks to their more gentle formulations minimising the porosity of your hair.

Modern Goldilocks

Sunflower Blonde was the number one colour trend of 2024 and golden tones are likely to sustain throughout 2025 but in more varied forms. While single global shades (see Minimalist Shades above) are also going to be trending, the modern Goldilocks is bringing blondes back to classic highlights with a new update on tone. Historically warm tones ought to be banished, but thanks to the appeal of golden sunny reflects, we’ll be seeing these in a variety of softer blonde designs that also grow out softly. Easy to update your usual blonding appointment, ask for a golden toner rather than your usual purple shampoo – warm tones will make the hair healthier looking and shinier and make you feel brighter and sunnier all year round.

Book your Colour Analysis Hair Trend 2025

We caught up with colour expert

Hairdressing to explain more about the Tiktok trend for Colour Analysis as she predicts we will see more hair salons offering this bespoke, holistic service in 2025.

“As a stylist, I’ve have always wanted to create hair to make my clients feel good. Since introducing colour analysis into my hair consultations, my clients have gone from being happy with their colour to discovering a newfound confidence.

For some, finding the absolute right colour has been life-changing. Colour analysis can go beyond your new hair colour to take a more holistic approach and support your colour choices for makeup, eyewear, clothes and even your home décor – surrounding yourself with the right colours to feel your best.”

How does it work?

Colour analysis takes the individual and brings together their natural colouring and personality. Colours are categorised into the 4 seasons alongside hue (warm or cool) and brightness.

Whilst your DNA is not going to change the season you are diagnosed with, skin tone will change with age and tanning so this can be taken into account.

What does a colour consultation look like?

The initial assessment considers your natural hair colour, eye colour and skin tone.

We use drapes of fabric in different colours around your neck to see the colours that work well for you. This experience gives the client a chance to see for themselves what works and what doesn’t, as well as bring their personality to this session for the colours they naturally like or dislike too.

Even just placing a well-suited colour next to

“For some clients, finding the absolute right colour has been life-changing.”
NOVA FANNER

their face can change so much. They seem fresher, shadows and fine lines disappear and the client simply glows.

We also need the client to take a short confidential online survey that creates a score for their personality to help guide me further. We can then change the tone of the colours to tailor them for the client.

What are the benefits?

Consultations reflect the individual in the chair. Taking more time to consider the colours and tones, as well as personality, will result in finding the perfect hair colour so there is less time testing colours and colour correction work. That’s not only healthier for your hair but your bank balance too. Clients feel more confident and look younger, healthier and the best version of themselves.
