Hot Seat

We spoke to Adam Reed, a multi award winning hairdresser who recently won ‘Best New Salon’ and ‘Best Sustainable Salon’ at the Hair Awards in March 2024. We asked him all about how he found opening his new salon in Covent Garden as well as changes he’s made to make his salon a more sustainable business.

FEATURE 14 | hair | SUMMER

As you recently won the Hair Awards for ‘Best Sustainable Salon’ what are three main things you focused on to make it more environmentally friendly?

1) The interior has an appreciation and respect for the environment. We were able to transfer our original Ercol furniture alongside upcycled pieces from our previous premises. You’ll find objects that I’ve literally gathered, found and fallen for dotted all around the space.

2) We use recyclable towels, protective capes, ethically sourced cleaning products and reusable gloves. Our basins are fitted with Eco Heads which cut our water usage down by 65% and the salon heating and hot water system is environmentally friendly.

3) We always to try and find a circular solution for our waste and work in partnership with Green Salon Collective. We recycle all our foil, colour tubes, plastics, cardboard, glass, paper and even the hair that we cut off.

For those considering a career in hairdressing with a focus on sustainability, what advice would you offer to help them succeed? You have to really commit to sustainability and not just treat it as a token gesture. Look for opportunities everywhere to make a difference to a greener future and to lowering your carbon footprint. It’s an ongoing process and there are no big, easy wins.

As a seasoned hairdresser, how do you foresee the future of hairdressing in the UK evolving to be more sustainable?

It’s something that everyone eventually will have to consider. It won’t be a choice we make, it will be something that is instinctive and expected. Of course, there are aspects of our businesses that naturally have a greater environmental impact – we are vast users of energy and water – but everything that can evolve eventually will.

Many people would believe that being sustainable would be more expensive. Do you agree and have you seen a difference in the prices you have to pay to be ‘greener’?

It’s a difficult one, because on one hand it is amazing what can be ‘reused’ – not just furniture recycling, but actually reusing materials to build or create something else rather than throwing them away and starting with new.

What piece of advice can you give someone wanting to open their own salon?

Work with an experienced fitter on the design and research for your vision. Making sure your salon meets your requirements for sustainability in its design and processes without compromising the operational needs of the business is key.

FUN FACTS

Where do you look for hair inspiration?

Everywhere – it used to be fashion leading the way, but hair has found its own voice – and I feel (wearing my session hairdresser hat) that it is this band of mighty creators that have become very evident when it comes to forecasting trends.

What’s your favourite part about being a hairdresser?

Whatever stage of your career you are at – no two days are ever the same! Whether it’s a day of clients in your chair or meeting the very big demands of content creation for our social channels, working on my project range Arkive, working with my educational team of ARKitects – creating shows and shoots, I, hand on heart, love it all.

Salon or shoot days?

It’s the mix I love – although we are constantly creating – the shoot days (models willing) let us all take it to the next level which always brings with it a sense of euphoria.

If you could do anyone’s hair who would it be and why?

Do you know what there isn’t anyone – I love the way people tailor their own individuality – if they ask for my help I’m of course more than willing to give it –but a chosen hairstyle tells me a lot about the person.

What made you become a hairdresser?

The smell of Elnett drew me in! I used to go to the hairdressers with my nan in my home town in Somerset. To me as a young gay boy growing up it was my sacred place, I loved it, I wanted to live there! Sadly there were stages in my life that I felt it was the only place where I could be me. Moving on to my space now – I’ve created a home from home for my clients – we welcome all people from all walks of life and I’d like to think they love how they feel when they are there – it’s so very important to me.

What do you love most about your profession?

Hairdressers are literally conduits – we’re the first to hear of a marriage, a new baby, a new partner, a special occasion and are considered to be part of these personal celebrations. Sadly we are also the first to hear of an impending divorce, a miscarriage, a break-up, an illness and this certainly does take its toll. That’s why we’ve always conducted mindfulness meetings at Arkive by Adam Reed for our team – it’s important that we know how to release the energy we’ve been blessed to store.

Who are your hair icons? My team – I bloody love them.

Jake’s Journey

Jake Unger is part of the award-winning HOB Salons team, who were recently named Salon Group of the Year at the HAIR Awards 2024. We caught up with him in his Camden base

Why did you decide to become a hairdresser?

I have always been interested in fashion but left school with no qualifications. In fact, I left school early. I didn’t like school and my mum said I could leave as long as a learnt a trade. I think she probably had plumbing or construction in mind, but I went to work at a local barbershop in Kent and realised I really enjoyed it. However, I wanted to do all types of hair, get involved in fashion shoots and work somewhere more high end, so I left and joined HOB Salons as an apprentice. As soon as I walked in to the salon, I thought wow!

What did your training involve, was it easy and what did you like doing?

I trained at HOB and went to college at Joshua Galvin. I took to cutting hair quite quickly, but really struggled with blow-drying. Obviously as a guy with short hair I’d never really blow-dried hair

FEATURE
16 | hair | SUMMER

before and really struggled with it, but I practised and practised. I instantly liked shorter hair rather than long hair as I could see the structure, the shape and it was easier to work closer to the head rather than on long lengths. It took about three years for me to be fully qualified and onto the salon floor.

How would you describe life behind the chair?

In the early days of my career I was working with clients and the public which I loved. Being able to recommend different styles to someone, have them come in for their appointment and see the buzz on their face when I’d changed their style and image was a great feeling. Now, I prefer the consultation, talking to them about inspirations and ideas and encouraging them to get a transformation and thinking of something different for that individual. The actually cutting becomes a bi-product of that.

What’s a typical day in the life of Jake?

I get to our Camden Academy at 9am and have a team meeting about the week ahead, before starting a course and welcoming students into the academy. I work with the other educators until lunchtime teaching cutting workshops and courses to our apprentices, or with students from other salons as well as international students. Today we have a team from Austria learning new cutting techniques. Then after lunch I will have meetings with our PR, with our co-founder and international creative director Akin Konizi and currently I’m interviewing for new team members. The thing I love about my job is it hits so many different parts of the business

FEATURE SUMMER | hair | 17

– clients, team, teaching, management. I typically finish at about 6pm, head home to walk to the dog and a couple times a week go to my local boxing club.

You started your career at HOB, why is it a great place to work?

I’ve been here for 18 years, and I love that I’ve been a part of the organic growth of HOB over that time. I started as a 16-year-old and have worked at every level in the company, from behind the chair to teaching apprentices and external students. I’ve also been involved in creating images for our collections and campaigns, travelled overseas presenting shows and seminars, and visited places such as Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Brazil and Monaco. I love the fact there is so much flexibility in this industry, no matter what you want to do, there’s a route you can take. Whether it’s creative, management or education – if you’re dedicated and passionate there’s a path you can take.

You’re now Head of Education, how do you help the hairdressers of the future?  I start working with apprentices as young as 16-years-old and help them to get their qualifications. One of my favourite courses is our HOB Graduate programme – it’s like a finishing school where they have six months to increase their confidence, improve their social skills and improve their skills. We have recently started offering our training to apprentices at other salons and I’m really enjoying seeing young people thrive in a career that can give them so much.

“I’ve been here for 18 years, and I love that I’ve been a part of the organic growth of HOB over that time.”

JAKE’S TIPS FOR MAKING HAIRDRESSING A CAREER

Work out what you are motivated by – the money and business side, or the creative and image side. Are you motivated by trends? If you are interested in fashion be the person who really understands it, study the catwalk, follow the right accounts online so inspiration comes to you rather than you having to search for it.

TOP STYLING TIPS

Short hair is continuing to be popular throughout 2024, and we are seeing it getting shorter. Don’t be scared to combine the texture of a mullet and longer hair, with the shorter layers for a more choppier, modern pixie hairstyle.

HAIRCUTS4HOMELESS ARE AS VULNERABLE AS YOU ARE

Haircuts4Homeless have built a community of skilled hairdressing volunteers who give their time free of charge to provide haircuts for homeless people. Today, we are a registered charity with 56 projects across the UK – from Brighton to Birmingham; Peterborough to Portsmouth, offering regular haircuts to the homeless.

Each of the Haircuts4Homeless centres have approximately five volunteers who operate once a month giving around 25-30 haircuts. This equates to approximately 1,680 free haircuts a month; 20,160 per year.

The impact of our work is uniquely measured in smiles. We literally witness their transformation before your eyes. Their demeanour, mood and confidence boosted with the service we give. We often get thanked by a guest who had an interview and got the job; or saw their child for the first time in a long time and felt proud of their appearance. Our return rate for guests is around 50% regulars but we love it when we see a guest for the last time because it means they have been allocated accommodation and are moving on in their life.

With a little help from our friends our work can continue to grow.

Let us be your charity.

Bridal Styling

Teresa Weller’s guide to Bridal Hair Bliss

Time to plan your wedding hair but don’t know where to start? Fear not – we’re here to guide you through the process so you can confidently step into your special day feeling like a billion bucks. We met with none other than Teresa Weller, the queen of bridal hair, for some top tier advice…

Who is Teresa Weller?

Teresa Weller has spent the last 25 years sculpting her reputation as the best in the business. Her keen eye for detail, coupled with her ability to translate catwalk trends into wearable wedding styles, highlights Teresa as the expert in bridal hair.

In 2018, Teresa launched THE BRIDAL HAIR ARTISTS, Surrey’s multi-award-winning team of wedding hairstylists and her reputation continues to soar.

Distinguished as ‘Best Bridal / Long Hair Stylist’ at the prestigious 2024 HAIR Awards, Teresa is recognised for her unwavering dedication to her craft.

Teresa’s expertise shines locally and nationally. From regional wedding fairs to the National Wedding Show, Teresa is revered far and wide and is a trusted wedding supplier at some of the most exclusive venues in the UK. With her exceptional talent and unwavering passion, Teresa has garnered a reputation for excellence that is unrivalled.

What is it about Teresa Weller that has made her an exceptional bridal stylist? We asked the lady herself…

“It’s a multitude of things that have got me to where I am today. The creativity you need for Bridal hair is very different to that on the salon floor, and I’ve always embraced it. This is a niche area that I’ve enjoyed from the age of 18.

“I’m a romantic person and I love the fact that I’m being invited to be in the biggest day of someone’s life. I feel honoured and I take it really seriously.

“The bride’s happiness is always my focus, so I connect with her and build from there. I just put my absolute heart and soul into it…it’s almost as though it’s MY wedding! I’m a giver so I keep giving and giving until it’s done, and I’ve created this amazing vision that we both share. That’s how I’ve created a good name,” Teresa explains.

When it comes to planning your wedding

FEATURE 20 | hair | SUMMER

Unveiled:

FEATURE SUMMER | hair | 21

hair, Teresa has no end of advice for brides-to-be. “The first thing to be aware of is the fact that the dress determines the hair. Really, you have to get the dress first. You can have an idea on your dress, and get an idea on your hair, but only when you’ve chosen that dress can you see what hairstyle will suit it,” Teresa guides.

Once you’ve said yes to the dress, it’s time to brainstorm! Teresa suggests creating a mood board for your ideas. “Select inspiration pictures, and incorporate elements such as bridesmaid dresses, colour scheme, flowers and décor so you can get an overall feel for what will work. Pinterest is a great tool for this. Eventually, you’ll want to select your top 5 hair inspiration pictures. Don’t forget to use images with similar hair colour and facial features to yours so you can see what will work,” suggests Teresa.

Your next step is to book a consultation with your bridal stylist (if you’re not sure how to find one, keep reading…we’ve got you covered). This is where you’ll discuss your ideas, hair type, and your mood board inspiration. “A professional can provide valuable insights and help bring your vision to life. Be open to their recommendations and trust their expertise,” Teresa advises.

Now for your trial…

“Hair trials are an absolute essential! Schedule a trial well in advance to experiment with different styles and accessories. Bring along any hair accessories or veils you plan to wear to see how they complement the hairstyle and make sure you take photos from different angles to get a clear idea of how your hair looks all round.

“Another tip of mine is to wear a white top or a colour similar to your dress during the trial. This will make a really big difference to how you feel about your hair,” explains Teresa.

Once you’ve settled on the perfect style and accessories, it’s time to make a haircare plan. “Healthy hair sets the foundation for a gorgeous bridal hairstyle. Leading up to your wedding day, focus on maintaining healthy hair by following a good haircare routine. Make sure you book your appointments for colour and any trims that might be needed before the big day. And if you’re considering extensions, ensure this is discussed with your bridal stylist well beforehand,” Teresa recommends.

FEATURE 22 | hair | SUMMER

So, we’ve got our planning and prepping process in place, but how do we find our perfect Bridal Stylist? Teresa has the answer…

“Begin by seeking recommendations from recently married friends or family members and ask about their experiences. You can also read testimonials and reviews to gain insights into overall satisfaction with the stylist’s services. Once you have a few options, it’s time to reach out to them.

“Whether your initial contact is via email or phone, see how promptly the bridal stylist responds and how they answer your questions. Do you feel heard and understood? Communication is key and you have to have that connection with them. Are they kind? Are they passionate? They’ve got to be passionate and excited about your wedding in order to create beautiful wedding hair,” Teresa guides.

Teresa suggests you prioritise bridal stylists with extensive experience and a proven track record of excellence. Look for certifications, awards, and industry affiliations that underscore their commitment to the craft.

“You need to trust them. You need to make sure they have confidence in their work, that they’ve

done this before, that they know what they’re doing. If they’re a new bridal stylist that hasn’t got that much experience, have a look at what training they’ve had and gauge how confident they are,” advises Teresa.

Check out each bridal stylist’s portfolio to see if their style of work matches your vision. “Does it have the “WOW” factor? Whether you’re looking for a romantic updo, cascading waves, or a sleek and sophisticated look, the key is to choose a bridal stylist who specialises in that type of styling,” suggests Teresa.

By selecting a stylist who aligns with your vision, values, and aspirations, you pave the way for a beautiful bridal hair journey.

Teresa is a fountain of knowledge, helping brides-to-be everywhere by sharing her expertise. She oozes love and generosity, serving as a shining example of what it means to be a true leader in the world of bridal hair.

“I run my bridal business with kindness at the heart. I care. I love hair. And I always go the extra mile, because I’ve found it’s never crowded.”

with Celebrity Hair Stylist

Jay Birmingham

Jay Birmingham is an international session stylist, who, in a few short years, has combined his passion for salon work with editorial styling for his celebrity clients. He has become one of the most recognisable names in the industry, travelling the world to provide fabulous hair. Jay’s clientele includes Maya Jama, Khloe Kardashian, Rochelle Humes, and many others.

Alongside his celebrity clientele, Jay has his very own brand of luxury haircare products, Jay B Haircare, which are a staple when styling clients. He is also a brand ambassador for BeautyWorks, the UK’s leading hair extension company. Jay works closely with titles such as OK!, Hello, Cosmopolitan, Elle as well as brands such as Jo Malone, Tatcha, Space NK, Olapleax, and ghd to

What has been your favourite look you’ve created?

That’s a hard question – I love creating looks with the client’s individual style and aesthetic in mind! One of my personal favourites was Sofia Grainge Richie’s hair for her wedding dress fitting with Chanel. I travelled to Paris to style her for the occasion with Vogue, where we opted for a sleek, slicked back bun. Sofia exudes class, grace, and elegance, so I wanted to encapsulate the essence of her style for such a special occasion. The key to recreating this gorgeous look is plenty of hairspray, to hold the hair in place all day – I opted for Color Wow’s Cult Favorite Firm + Flexible Hairspray. This sleek, slicked back bun beautifully complements Sofia’s gorgeous side profile and accentuates her features. Sofia was such a beautiful bride!

How did you get into hairdressing?

I started off at a salon in Birmingham, before moving to work at Nicky Clarke. This is where I realised my full potential, and what I was capable of! Working at Nicky Clarke gave me insight into the world of session styling, and it quickly became my career goal. I then chose to specialise in styling because it allowed me to express my creativity. I find that doing hair is such a therapeutic process and when you achieve the result you were after, it’s an amazing feeling! Specialising in a certain area of hairdressing sets you aside from other hairdressers and allows your career to grow!

You’ve become quite well known for your work with extensions. What do you most enjoy about working with them? Hair extensions create endless opportunities for hairstyles, and they really allow your creativity to flow! When a client has hair extensions, there’s more possibility of achieving more intricate styles as there’s more hair to work with. If you’re pressed for time, hair extensions add a sense of ease as the hair doesn’t require as much prep, which means more time for styling! Clip-in hair extensions are great for adding instant length and dimension to the hair. I’d recommend using Beauty Works clip-in extensions – they blend beautifully with the client’s natural hair and they’re so easy to style!

How did you start working with Khloe and what was it like?  Andrew Fitzsimmons introduced me to Khloe. It’s been an opportunity of a

lifetime, and it truly has opened so many doors for me. When I began working with her, it was a case of right place, right time. I’m truly grateful for the opportunities she has given me, and I can’t wait for what the future holds!

What are some of the hair colour and styling trends you’re seeing this year?

Any predictions for the rest of 2024?

Hair accessories are back in a big way! I think we will be seeing more hair accessories being used, after the momentous rise of the bow over the past year. Think bows, hoops, clips, Blair Waldorf inspired headbands, the lot!

Hair accessories are a fun way to add an extra oomph to a client’s hair and they can really pull a look together. I think we’ll also be seeing a lot more bobs in all shapes and sizes in 2024 – especially the cheekbone-grazing 90s supermodel bob. It’s been given the name ‘The Baroque Bob’, a super sleek, sophisticated look which we saw on Hailey Bieber rocking at Coachella this year. This cut is all about razorsharp lines and the hair looking super glossy and healthy – ‘The Baroque Bob’ is the ultimate haircut of 2024.

“I love creating looks with the client’s individual style and aesthetic in mind!”
JAY BIRMINGHAM

Earlier this year, you worked with Maya Jama for her show Love Island. Tell us about your vision for her hair in terms of the colour and overall look and how you brought it to life.

Maya naturally has quite curly hair, so when styling her for Love Island, I wanted to keep her hair as natural as possible. For styling Maya’s natural hair, my go-to is TRESemmé Curl Cream. This styling cream is great for keeping frizz at bay, adding definition to each individual curl to give the hair that extra oomph, all whilst leaving Maya’s curls looking super sleek and glossy! Apply two or three pumps of the TRESemmé Curl Cream to wet hair, making sure you focus on the lengths. To finish, blow dry the hair using a diffuser, then style as desired.

Lastly, do you prefer creating looks for the red carpet or for photo shoots?

That’s another tough one – I love both and they’re both so different! With photo shoots, there is freer rein to create more innovative looks, so you can really let your creativity flow! Whilst I do love working on more creative visions, I really enjoy the work I do on red carpets. I have such an intimate relationship with some of my clients – some of them have become my good friends over time! Taking the time to plan looks with my clients for their appearances at events, like red carpets, adds a personal touch to the experience. Over time, I have gotten to know some of them so well, so it is a truly rewarding experience when you achieve their vision.

It’s no mean feat to celebrate your 40th anniversary in the business of hair, but one such company is the seven-salon strong group Haringtons. To celebrate this outstanding achievement, Creative Director Richard Scorer got together with his mighty team to share with HAIR magazine their 40 most favourite hair tips...

40 RULES FOR 40 YEARS

The Haringtons

Put the treat back into your treatments

Do you get bored of using the same old conditioners and feel like your hair needs a real pickme-up? Here at Haringtons, we help you choose the right luxury conditioning hair treatments for your needs. One of our absolute favourites is Kérastase’s Nutritive Masque Intense. Leah in Winchester feels really treated when she uses it: “It feels so luxurious and gives the best deep conditioning results,” she says.

2

How to combat oily hair

If you find it super hard to keep your hair oil-free, it could be down to your shampoo. Cleansing the hair correctly is vital to keeping the oil at bay.

Haringtons recommends Kérastase’s Specifique Bain Divalent Shampoo for oily roots. It works wonders at getting the hair brilliantly clean, which not only leaves your scalp feeling great but makes your blow dry last longer too!

Confidence Manifesto

Create the perfect bouncy blow dry Haringtons blow dries are second to none. Check out our technique and secret product stash below…

Step 1 We use Kérastase’s Discipline Shampoo and Conditioner, to cleanse and nourish the hair. After towel-drying, spray through a heat protector as it’s great for smooth blow dries and taming rebellious hair.

Step 2 Put that pep in your prep! We use Root Lift

Volume Boost from Redken, a lovely lightweight root lifting spray. Direct at the roots to give the perfect amount of lift and hold.

Step 3 Add Redken Big Blo Out Jelly, to give the hair some guts without weighing it down. Our stylist Liv thinks it’s the best thing for bouncy blow dries.

Step 4 Finish off with your favourite leave-in cream for a gloriously beautiful Haringtons-style blow dry.

How to swim and shine

We all know that chlorine and hair just don’t mix. From brassing up your cool blonde tones to stripping hair of its natural oils and leaving it looking dull and lifeless, swimming can do no end of damage to your hair. At Haringtons, we love L’Oreal’s Metal Detox Range as it helps to counteract chlorine damage (among many other amazing benefits). Nourish, protect, and replenish your hair by using the Cleansing Cream Shampoo, Anti-Deposit Protector Mask, Anti-Deposit Protector Concentrated Oil, and the Anti-Metal High Protection Cream. Now you can swim and shine!

Top Curly Hair Styling Advice

Curly hair is magnificent when it’s cared for correctly. We want you to maintain your curls easily after your salon visit, so here are two simple tips for you:

Tip 1 Never comb your hair when it’s dry. Most hair types need to limit how much combing is done on wet hair, but not curls! If dry curls are combed, you risk losing the curl definition and increase the chance of frizz. Make sure you use a wide-tooth comb to avoid breakage.

Tip 2 Air dry your curls. Let your curls dry naturally whenever possible to minimise heat damage. Add your favourite oils or creams to damp hair for best results.

Haringtons Pro Tip To revive curls when you wake up, try Curl Manifesto Refresh by Kérastase. This will give life to your locks!

7 Bobs Broken Down

Looking to go shorter in 2024 but not sure what to ask for? Here’s the ‘Haringtons Bob Dictionary’ to help you out.

The Classic Bob The classic bob should be the same length all the way around the head. The underneath will be cut slightly shorter than the top sections to help the hair to flip inwards. A classic bob rests just below the chin, but this look can also be much shorter (or longer).

The Lob or Mob The long or medium bob (aka the lob or mob) is much like the classic bob but is usually an inch or two longer. Your Haringtons stylist has the expertise to assess which type of bob would best suit your facial features. We’re always happy to have a chat so just pop into the salon for more information.

The A-Line Bob An A-line bob is cut shorter in the back and is angled in a fairly sharp line so it’s longer at the front. A classic A-line bob would be one length, but now, more clients are asking for graduated or stacked bobs which have layers at the back.

5 Keep your colour salon fresh

Want to keep your colour looking fresh for longer and prevent colour fade? Our Stylist Katie has the answer. Try using L’Oreal’s Detox Masque post-colour to keep the hair really vibrant. Katie loves to leave it on for as long as possible while indulging the client in a relaxing massage.

The Graduated Bob A graduated bob is cut shorter at the back and angled so it is longer at the front. The back is usually stacked or layered to give a graduated look that builds up to the shortest layers that are three or four inches in length.

8 The Answer to Split Ends

You can best care for your hair by having regular trims and using quality cleansing and nourishing products. In addition, we recommend Serum Therapiste from Kérastase. It’s wonderful for damaged hair and smooths split ends. Terrie from our Winchester salon says her hair is super smooth and shiny after using this product.

9

Style Fine Hair Like This

Fine hair doesn’t have to be flat. To get the most out of every strand, make sure you’re using the right products. At Haringtons, we love Kérastase’s Densifique Mousse, as it gives tonnes of volume, which is great for fine hair. Once applied, dry your hair upside down, working your fingers into the roots to give it lift. Et voila! Instant body!

10

Caring for Your Hair Extensions

High-quality extensions deserve high-quality care. If applied and maintained correctly, they will stay looking fresh and fabulous.

All of our hair extensions are made from 100% human hair with our stylists applying damage-free techniques to achieve seamless, natural looks that suit all hair types and textures. Techniques we offer include Nano Rings, Tape-in, Celebrity Weave and Micro. Available in a wide range of colours and textures, these extensions can be worn for anything between 2 and 6 months depending on the fixing method, and are reusable, making this a genuine investment.

To care for your extensions, we recommend using Pureology Hydrate shampoo and conditioner. This will keep your extensions moisturised and help to maintain that salon-fresh look.

Haringtons Guide to Brushing Your Hair the Right Way

Treat your hair with respect! Keep your hair in the best condition possible and avoid unwanted damage by making sure you’re brushing your hair the right way. For healthy hair, follow the Haringtons brushing routine:

• After washing and conditioning, it’s important to towel dry your hair gently as excessive rubbing can cause damage and tangling.

• For curls, we recommend detangling with your fingers whilst conditioning the hair or using a widetooth comb after towel drying. For straighter hair textures, always brush when dry.

• Remember to start brushing from the bottom, working your way up through the mid-lengths to the roots, and use a brush with ball-tipped bristles for maximum protection.

How to Create Volume with Styling, Colour, and Cut

Do you want to achieve volume, but your hair styling simply isn’t cutting it? Volume is not just about your blowdry and finish; it’s also about having the right cut and colour to enhance what you’ve got and encourage that full-bodied look. Here’s how each service can add volume and give your hair big bounce energy.

Colour Discuss colour options with us at Haringtons and we’ll create a bespoke service for you. A rich, luxurious colour may add depth to your hair, while multi-tonal work could give it texture. We’ll guide you on what will work best.

(Knowledge from the experts One way to make hair appear thicker is to add highlights as it can swell the cuticle, making it look fuller.)

11

From the Inside Out

Want to give your hair a health and beauty boost? Start from the inside out by including these key vitamins in your diet:

Biotin Also called Vitamin B7, biotin is essential in growing healthy and thick hair. It’s now labelled as “hair food” because of the increased rate of hair growth when taken daily.

Vitamin E Vitamin E is an antioxidant which can help to improve frizzy, damaged hair. It can make hair shinier, more manageable, and youngerlooking.

Vitamin A Vitamin A is essential for maintaining strong hair follicles and keeping the scalp’s skin cells healthy.

Zinc Zinc is vital in hair tissue growth and repair, and helps keep the oil glands around the follicles properly functioning. This helps stop hair loss and dandruff and promotes healthy hair growth.

Vitamin C Vitamin C helps build collagen, which is vital for hair growth. It also protects the hair from turning grey prematurely by making sure that new hair cells are produced correctly.

Cut We will work to achieve maximum fullness with your cut. Some styles work best by building weight and reducing length, while others need soft layering for a shapelier silhouette.

Style After the colour and cut, we love to use L’Oreal’s Volumetry Spray, to add that voluminous finish to fine hair. It’s lightweight and smells lovely too.

14

Your Colour, Your Way

Fancy a change? If you’re new to hair colour, or you’re thinking about trying something different, here are some tips for new colour success:

Consider your complexion During your colour consultation at Haringtons, we will guide you in selecting the tones that suit you best by looking at warm and cool options, as well as lighter and darker shades. Just a small adjustment can make a big difference.

Start small If you’re not the bold type when it comes to your hair, why not start small? Adding a few highlights or going a shade darker might be all you need to feel brand new!

15 Stay Youthful

We’re all familiar with anti-ageing products for our skin, but what about our hair? At Haringtons, we help our clients stay youthful with Kérastase’s Chronologiste range of specially formulated products, including anti-ageing shampoo, hair mask, and heat protector. They’re perfect for revitalising and regenerating lengths and ends for all types of hair.

16

Curls, Curls, Curls!

At Haringtons, we believe that hair care always comes first, and this is especially true for curls. Focus on creating a healthy foundation to eliminate frizz and keep your curls full of bounce. Check out Kérastase’s Curl Manifesto range to take you through each step of cleansing, conditioning, and styling. Pro tip Spritz your hair with water to reactivate products, rather than weighing down your hair with product overload.

17 Smooth it Out

If you’re looking for long-lasting smooth hair that’s free from frizz, you’ll be delighted to learn that we offer a fabulous hair smoothing and straightening service at most of our Haringtons salons, using the fantastic KeraStraight hair smoothing & straightening treatment. Now you can experience the benefits of smooth, frizz-free hair that’s easy to manage and luxurious to touch with KeraStraight. This hair smoothing treatment also repairs and renews your hair, leaving it healthier, straighter, and stronger for up to four months.

18

Short Hair – Get the Look

Haringtons stylists do short hair like no one else! Here’s what we use to “get the look”:

Texture in a spray Our stylist Sue loves Spray wax by Redken, for giving tons of texture on short haircuts.

Texture in a pump If you prefer to use a pump rather than a spray, then Texture Paste by Redken is a classic!

Modern and messy Our stylist Jordan really rates Savage Panache texture spray, which gives a great matte, modern, and messy finish. Super matt For that super matt look, we use Rough Clay by Redken. It’s our go-to for short hairstyles.

19

Fun in the Sun?

We’re all aware of the damage that the sun does to our skin, but what about our hair? Sun exposure can dry our hair out and ruin our colour too. Use haircare with UV defence, such as Kerastase’s Soleil range. This covers all your sun protection hair needs at once!

20 Haringtons Chlorine Protection Tip

Who doesn’t love a dip in the pool? But the effects of chlorine on our hair can leave lasting damage, which we need to protect against. If swimming caps aren’t your thing, shower before you swim to avoid chlorine damage. If your hair is already wet, it won’t be able to absorb as much chlorine water from the pool!

21Style Safe with Haringtons

Simple everyday styling can be hazardous for our hair if it’s not done safely. Always use a heat protector to shield against damage from hair dryers and styling tools. We love One United, a fabulous all-in-one leave-in conditioner, cutting lotion, and heat protector by Redken. This easy one-step process offers protection all day long.

Give Your Hair the Kiss of Life!

Transform dull hair into shiny, new, healthy locks with Kérastase’s Elixir Ultime. This hair care range is designed to nourish and rejuvenate your hair, leaving it radiant and full of life. Say goodbye to dry hair and hello to the luscious, glossy hair you’ve always dreamed of.

23 Tender Love and Kérastase

We believe that product choice can make all the difference to your hair health. If you want to give your hair a little TLC, we recommend the Kérastase Nutritive range, designed to provide intense nourishment to dry and damaged hair. If you’ve been struggling with brittle, dehydrated locks, this is the perfect solution. Dry hair is often more prone to damage from environmental factors such as UV rays and pollution. Kérastase Nutritive products help shield your hair from these factors, preserving your hair’s health and vibrancy.

24 Unconventional Hair Drying Tip!

When it comes to drying your hair, avoid towel drying and use an oversized 100% cotton t-shirt instead. This reduces hair breakage and helps control frizz and flyaways… Give it a go!

25 The Cure for Tangled Hair

Tangled hair with tiny little knots can be a pain, literally! While we can’t promise you’ll never have a tangle again, we’d recommend you invest in a Tangle Teezer detangling brush and try the following:

• Gently brush your hair before you shower to get rid of as many tangles as possible because it will only become more tangled as you work your hair into a lather.

• Invest in a silk or satin cover for your pillow. Your hair is much less likely to get in a mess as you sleep, and you’ll find it looks a lot shinier when you wake up too!

26 The Haringtons secret stash

At Haringtons, we love all things styling! From beachy waves to sleek updos, we adore them all. Here are the 4 styling products we can’t live without…

• Pureology’s Style and Protect soft finish hairspray has a lovely malleable hold, which is great for putting hair up and still being able to play with the details.

• Pli Thermo modelling spray, in the L’Oréal TECNI.ART range is really good for a “dry” hold and has a nice clean feel to it. Izzy’s hair lasted for four days when she used it in the salon!

• Redken Control Addict 28 Extra High Hold Hairspray locks you in place, so the wind won’t ruin your creation.

• TECNI.ART Super Dust, keeps texture in fine hair that can be oily. Add a little to your roots during styling to keep hair looking fresh all day.

27

Hair loss and thinning prevention

Hair loss can be a cause of great distress for both men and women. Here are our Haringtons Pro Tips to encourage thicker hair:

• Keep your hair as clean as possible to avoid weighing it down.

• Scrunch your hair while drying it to add volume.

• Avoid pulling your hair back into tight ponytails, buns, or plaits – keep it loose.

• Massage your scalp to increase circulation.

• When blow-drying, lift your hair at the roots and give your hair a burst of cold air.

Vibrant colour – yours to keep Washing your hair too frequently can strip the natural oils that help maintain your hair’s colour and shine. We recommend washing hair 2-3 times a week or less if your hair and lifestyle allow it. Cool water can help to preserve vibrant colour as hot water can open the hair cuticle and cause colour to fade quickly. When washing, be mindful of your product choice. Sulphates can strip the colour from your hair, so opt for sulphate-free products designed for coloured hair. We recommend using the Kérastase Reflection Bain Chromatique sulfate-free shampoo, as it is designed to protect your coloured hair, prolonging those vibrant shades. It also provides UV protection to shield your hair from the sun’s harmful rays, which can cause colour fading and damage.

29 Keep waves wavy

Curly hair always looks gorgeous but, after a couple of hours of dancing, your curls may begin to drop.

Curl your hair in sections and apply the product of your choice to each section before curling your hair with a wand or tongs. Pin your curl in place so it is tightly wrapped up and let it cool before releasing it. Finish with a spritz of hairspray. Do not be tempted to fiddle with your hair as this will cause the curls to drop out faster.

30

Help! I’ve overdone it!

Have you been doing anything and everything to your hair? Are you looking for some urgent repair remedies? Here are our top two products to help combat overprocessing and over-styling.

For major heat damage repair, you need L’Oreal Absolute Repair. It resurfaces the hair if you’ve been a bit over-eager with the flat irons. Richard of Haringtons says: “My teenager’s hair is still attached to her head thanks to this!”

When it comes to split ends, Nutri Supplement Split Ends Serum, has epic sealing qualities and will absolutely save the day.

31Here’s how to keep your copper hot!

Heat styling tools can damage your hair and cause your gorgeous copper to fade. Our top heat protectors are Kérastase’s Resistance Ciment Thermique Heat Protector, as it repairs and protects hair with its heat-activated properties, and Chroma Heat Protector, which keeps your colour true and your hair shiny.

Get a glam ponytail in seconds

Glam ponytails are still trending and are a great way to elevate a casual look in no time. At Haringtons, we use Redken’s 20 High Hold Anti-Frizz Hairspray, to help create a stunningly smooth ponytail. It is non-aerosol, which means it’s ideal for smoothing down those rebels that are getting away from your ponytail and also keeps humidity at bay. Pro Tip If you want to create the illusion of a longer ponytail without using extensions, stack one on top of the other! Put the higher ponytail at the crown of your head and add a second one underneath, then style the two together seamlessly. No one will ever know!

33

Haringtons’ 8 top tips for healthy hair

Tip 1 After rinsing out your shampoo and conditioner, give your hair a blast of cool or cold water.

Tip 2 Once a month, apply a leave-in conditioner.

Tip 3 Gently towel dry your hair and apply a light serum while the hair is still wet.

Tip 4 Let your hair dry naturally whenever possible to promote healthy hair. However, when blowdrying your hair, direct the nozzle down the hair shaft and have a final blast of ‘cool’ air.

Tip 5 Apply a non-alcohol-based straightening balm to dry hair. The smoother the cuticle, the shinier your hair will be.

Tip 6 Use a long round brush with short bristles so your hair glides smoothly over the brush.

Tip 7 If you wear your hair in a ponytail, alternate the fastening point and give it a break by wearing your hair down.

Tip 8 Lay off the styling irons. If you can’t live without your styling tools, invest in a quality styling iron and a good protective spray.

34

How to keep your blonde bright

Step one will always be to get your colour right in the salon. No amount of purple shampoo can correct a bad colour! But, once you get the perfect blonde, you can keep it bright in-between appointments by investing in quality home care:

The Kérastase Blond Absolu range is designed for blonde or highlighted hair. It is specifically formulated to address the unique needs of blonde hair, such as maintaining colour vibrancy and combating issues like dryness and breakage. Blonde hair can sometimes develop unwanted brassiness or yellow undertones, so the Kérastase Blonde Absolu is the perfect hair care product to remove those unwanted tones from hair.

Blonde Absolu products contain purple and blue pigments that help neutralise these brassy tones, leaving your hair looking cooler and more natural. This product is also enriched with ingredients that provide deep hydration and nourishment, promoting softness and manageability.

Don’t scrimp when it comes to a haircut – a good haircut grows and evolves and never puts you in the mood that you want to tear your hair out. A good salon like Haringtons invests in the education of their team and our tiered structure ensures great hair at a price you can afford.

While on the subject of investing in your hair…

You’ve had the best cut and colour –now look after it! All our team are experienced retail practitioners and we’re very proud of our retail selection – Kérastase , Redken and Shu Uemara.

37 Simply be-YOU-tiful

We believe in finding the style that fits with your lifestyle so you can maintain the look yourself without any hassle.

Our top tip is Find the beauty in being you. You’re enough!

38 Shiny hair secret

One easy way to give your hair a little gleam is to lower the temperature of your shower. “Cold rinses when you wash your hair will close the cuticle. A closed cuticle reflects the light, leaving the hair looking shiny,” says Mistry of Haringtons. If you want added shine, use protecting oil, cream, or serum. Ask your Haringtons stylist for advice on the best product for you.

Losing It...

With 1 in 2 women suffering with postpartum hair loss, we talked to trichologist Eva Proudman, founder of our Hair Award Best Hair Loss supplement, Tricoextra, to find out more about what causes postpartum hair loss and what can be done to reduce it.

Consultant Trichologist Eva Proudman FIT IAT has been working for over 20 years as an expert in hair and scalp health.

What exactly is postpartum hair loss and why does it happen?

Postpartum hair loss is an increase in hair shedding that starts some 3-4 months after having your baby. During pregnancy, women have much higher levels of the hormone oestrogen and this helps to keep the hair in the so-called ‘growing phase’ for longer (with more hair than is usual in this phase) and also supports the shine and overall health of the hair. After having your baby, the oestrogen levels drop back to normal levels and the additional hair that had been kept in the growing phase moves to the resting and then shedding phase, leading to the increase in hair fall when you wash or brush. However, it can be very distressing to see the excessive hair shedding and you will naturally feel concerned that you’re losing your hair. So, it’s important to reassure new mums that with this type of shedding, most commonly, it’s not hair loss as such, but it’s the imbalance to the growing and shedding phase that should correct itself over a period of 6-9 months. If it carries on for longer than this, then I would suggest seeing a Trichologist as there may be other underlying causes, other than

hormonal, that need to be addressed to enable the hair to fully recover.

Using a hair thickening shampoo and conditioner is helpful to keep the hair looking and feeling thicker, Absolute Collagen have a brilliant duo that is really effective. If the post-partum hormonal changes cause an itchy flaky scalp then do use a shampoo that will treat and manage this. I would always recommend Juniper Therapy treatment shampoo which is great at managing the scalp but is kind to the hair.

And, always check with your GP, midwife or trichologist before using any type of medicated shampoo during pregnancy.

Does everyone experience postpartum hair loss? If not, then why?

Not everyone will suffer from postpartum hair loss, but it is very common with some research figures suggesting 50% of new mums suffering with this condition. If you don’t suffer from it, then you are probably less sensitive to the hormonal fluctuations that typically cause this condition.

Is it normal to lose hair in early stages of pregnancy?

Yes, for some women it can be normal to see an increase in hair shedding in the early stages of pregnancy. This can be due to the ‘shock’ to the body, increased stress levels and of course the dreaded morning sickness, which for some people can be a real problem, causing them to limit their dietary intake and missing out on key nutrients. Again, this is a temporary loss and should settle down as the underlying causes start to resolve.

Are there any natural ways to prevent hair loss after childbirth?

Maintaining a good diet after childbirth is very important, especially keeping a good protein content in your diet, which the hair really needs to encourage growth and overall hair health. Eating iron rich foods is always good as stored iron levels can drop during pregnancy and after giving birth – and it’s important to note that stored iron levels, (serum ferritin) are important to a normal hair growing and shedding cycle.

I know it’s easier said than done with a newborn but do try to catch up on sleep when you can. The hair follicle is the second fastest dividing cell in the body – but non-essential – so it therefore needs good sleep to regenerate. Poor sleep can exacerbate the hair shedding. Do take a good vitamin and mineral supplement. Tricoextra (an easy-to-take, daily supplement which is packed with essential vitamins and minerals at the optimum level, that the body can use effectively) is a really great option and can also be safely taken during pregnancy too. Try to keep a good hair care regime, which I know can

be difficult with a new baby to look after but keeping the scalp well balanced and the hair hydrated (through regular washing and conditioning) will all help the hair to look and feel better.

How long will the shedding take place after childbirth?

The shedding normally starts between 3-4 months after giving birth and can last for 6-9 months before the growing and shedding cycle becomes balanced again. If after 9 months, if the shedding isn’t stopping, then do seek a Trichology consultation as there may well be other causes or even conditions that are co-existing and stopping the natural recovery of the post-partum shedding.

What is your advice to those wishing to do the best for their hair throughout their pregnancy.

Diet comes first! A healthy balanced diet, packed with protein and plenty of water for hydration would be my number one piece of advice –alongside taking a good, daily supplement to support the stored vitamin and mineral levels, such as Tricoextra. Try to keep active and to manage your anxiety and stress levels that can rise, especially if it’s your first baby. Keep a good hair care regime, washing every couple of days to keep the scalp well balanced.

In The Summer Time…

(when

the weather is fine...)

We’re most definitely not qualified to forecast the weather, but generally speaking, the heat is on from June onwards, so what do we need to address when looking after our hair? HAIR magazine spoke to Anabel Kingsley, Brand President and Consultant Trichologist at Philip Kingsley to verify how important it is to take extra steps when looking after your hair when the heat Is on.

Our biggest enemy when the warmer weather comes is frizz”, says Anabel. “Frizz occurs due to moisture in the atmosphere (i.e. humidity) which is generally greater in the summer due to the rise in temperature. The greater the water content of the air, the more likely it is that it will enter your hair shaft, dampening strands and causing the hydrogen bonds to be broken and reset in their natural shape resulting in frizz.”

“It would have to be the Philip Kingsley Swimcap Water Resistant Mask, especially if you’re going on holiday! Swimcap means your hair stays protected but also hydrated so you get the benefits of a leave-in treatment at the same time! The uniquely creamy, conditioning formula treats and shields hair from the drying, damaging effects of the sun, sea, chlorine and UV, helping to keep tresses nourished and hydrated. You’ll emerge from the water with silky, soft strands, and what’s more, it also safeguards against colour fade and discoloration, preventing that dreaded brassy (or green) blonde.” “

Anabel continues “Another aspect that can cause drying and may denature the keratin in the hair, causing it to be more prone to breakage, is UV rays. They can also negatively affect your hair colour (particularly lightened hair), giving it brassier tones.”

So far we’ve covered the humidity and rays which get us dreaming of beach holidays to come, Anabel also stresses that salt water can be very drying for the hair and, combined with a hot climate, this can cause severe moisture loss in the hair.

Lastly, we asked Anabel what product we should all be packing when taking a trip abroad.

Bleach Baby

Blondes may seem to have more fun, but when it comes to maintaining the colour… it’s not as fun as it may seem. While you may feel great as a blonde, it’s more than likely you’ll pay for it in the long run. However, there are ways to control the amount of damage caused by bleach. We spoke to our Hair Awards Colour Expert winner, Heffy Wheeler from HX to help you out.

If you’re tempted to go lighter whatever your colour, here’s what you need to know before reaching for the bleach.

What is bleach and why does it damage hair?

Hair bleach is a chemical agent that lightens your hair colour by removing the pigment from your hair strands. If used incorrectly bleach can over process the hair resulting in damage to the hair structure. However, this is only when bleach is used incorrectly. When bleach is used by a trained professional it is safe to use as part of the lightening process. It’s important to remember that often the process of going blonde is a journey rather than a trip and to achieve the desired result can often take multiple appointments.

How can I protect my hair while bleaching it?

The first thing would be to always go to a professional for any bleaching service, do not attempt to bleach your hair

at home. It’s a chemical service and should only be carried out by an experienced/trained professional.

How will I know if blonde hair will suit me before making the jump from brunette?

This is why consultation is so important, sit down with your stylist and talk about the options. Going from brunette to blonde can be done in various different ways depending on how blonde you want to be. Balayage and face-framing is a great way to try out the trend before committing to it fully. There are loads of great apps out there that you can use to change your hair colour and see what it’s like before you actually try it yourself. It doesn’t always need to be a full head of platinum blonde when you go lighter – lightening services can be used to create so many different looks adding in more dimension and tone.

What is one piece of advice you would give someone wanting to go fully blonde for the first time?

The first one would be always visit a professional salon, don’t do it yourself. Make sure you’re ready for the commitment and are clear on aftercare and maintenance – blonde always looks great when it’s fresh out of the salon, but it is a bit of a lifestyle change, in terms of aftercare and maintaining your new blonde look. If you want a full head scalp bleach, this obviously requires more maintenance than if

you want to go lighter gradually with highlights or a balayage. Talk to your stylist about your options and find out what works best for you. Blonde hair always requires more maintenance. You can’t just half heartedly go into being blonde, it takes work and a lot of good products.

Are there any ways to lighten hair without bleach?

Yes, high lift tints can be used on virgin hair to give life to a blonde. However, if you already have dark dye on the hair then it’s not possible to lighten the hair to blonde without bleaching. Your stylist will work with you to decide on the best option for your hair type.

Is it more expensive to be blonde?

Overall, yes it is more expensive to be blonde. Blonding services often take more time and more product to achieve the desired look and often the desired look needs to be achieved in stages to protect the hair’s integrity. It all depends on the type of blonde – lived-in balayage can give four to six months without needing any in-salon maintenance, whereas all over blondes and lighter blondes will notice regrowth more quickly and need more regular maintenance appointments to keep them looking fresh. When going blonde you definitely need to consider the budget of up-keeping the colour both at home and in salon.

Scalp Studies

However much you spend on your shampoo, conditioner or styling product – they aren’t going to be in any way effective unless you look after your scalp.

Start thinking about your scalp the same way you think about your skin. Imagine using the same care routine on your scalp as you do on your face – the cleansers, the moisturisers the serums. Having said that studies have shown that your scalp ages six times faster than you face and twelve times faster than your body! So it comes as no surprise that when it comes to healthy hair – if you look after your scalp it will result in stronger, thicker and healthier hair. Kelly Rowney at Tate says: “Your scalp and hair have their own microbiomes. An imbalanced scalp microbiome can lead to issues like

dermatitis, eczema, dandruff and more.”

Kelly goes on to share some fantastic ways to look after your scalp and achieve healthy hair:

“Everyone knows they should exfoliate their face and body, so why would we not exfoliate our scalp? Many people are missing out on this crucial step for healthy hair, especially when it’s ageing as fast as it is.

“Scalp oiling is a great way to make sure your scalp is well moisturised. A lot of people don’t like the idea of scalp oiling as they believe it will lead to an oily scalp, but the same principles apply as for your face. From a young age many of us believe that if you have oily skin we should stay away from moisturiser. However the opposite is true, and, just as with your face, if you keep your scalp moisturised, less sebum will be produced to compensate for dryness.

“Using a scalp massager is another great way to look after your scalp, as it helps to increase blood flow and circulation to the scalp leading to faster hair growth. It also helps to remove product buildup which weighs your hair down.

“Another great product to invest in is a detox shampoo, which you should use once or twice a month depending on the number of products you use. When you use dry shampoo and other styling products it can weigh the hair down and block your hair follicles, which inhibits hair growth and can cause hair loss. By using a detox shampoo, it gives your hair and scalp a clean and healthy environment for hair to grow and boosts the effectiveness of other hair products”.
