WINNER

We are delighted to announce Luca Jones, Kitch is this year’s Hair Hero Winner

In the Hot Seat

Luca Jones (he/him) is powerfully progressive and fearlessly fun. With a colourful work resumé, a successful salon in the bag and another on the horizon, Luca is shaking up the hair world

FEATURE 14 | hair | SPRING

Being born from a family of hairdressers and trained from a young age, Luca has had a full column of clients since the age of 16. After quickly conquering his dream of working on stage, Luca became an in-demand session stylist working behind the scenes from Fashion Week to big-rent magazine cover shoots, before finally settling in with his love for TV work. Luca’s impressive TV portfolio includes Strictly Come Dancing, The Masked Singer and Dancing on Ice. His celebrity clients include Kylie Minogue, Jessie J and Michelle Visage. Luca thrives in creative environments, and his work celebrates individual identity, putting his own personal twists on classic styles. Constantly sharing this advanced knowledge and experience, Luca’s look-and-learn style education courses alongside the UK’s leading trade supplier, Alan Howard, are always a big hit.

FUN FACTS

Where do you look for hair inspiration?

My clients give me the biggest inspiration – they have some wild ideas and its great to mix them with my techniques and own ideas. Salon work is a collaboration between stylist and client.

What’s your favourite part about being a hairdresser?

I love everything about being a hairdresser, I love the skill and technique and the creativity, but the ability to give confidence and make people happy is a massive part of the joy, it’s not always about showing off – it’s how you can make someone feel

Salon or Shoot Days?

I thought this would be an easy question but I’m not actually sure – two very different days with different mind sets, I like the stability and relationships of the salon but enjoy the thrill of a quick change on live tv.

If you could do anyone’s hair, who would it be and why? The only person I can honestly say I’ve ever thought of for this question was Lisa left eye Lopez. As a teenager she blew my mind with her hairstyles – it all seemed so fun and got me into styling.

What made you want to become a hairdresser?

My mum trained to be a hairdresser when I was a kid and the training heads were all around the house and some family member was always in the kitchen having their hair done.

What do you love most about your profession?

The versatility coupled with the knowledge that with a pair of scissors in your back pocket you can make a living.

What piece of advice can you give someone wanting to open their own salon?

Everyone has their niche and don’t let others stop you finding yours. Get good lighting.

Who are your hair icons?

My hair icon firmly has to be my mum obviously, but I also have to say my team on Strictly – I’ve learnt more in the 10 years working alongside magicians and some of the most talented stylists I could name.

In what ways does your salon actively promote and support inclusivity?

When we decided to open an inclusive salon/barbers we always knew it would have gender neutral pricing – we felt that was the fairest way to set our prices but never thought of the result that we would be one of the first inclusive spaces. We do not see ourselves as a queer salon and feel all spaces should to be inclusive of everyone and nobody should feel uncomfortable. We have a variety of clients who do not like the attitude of other salons and barbers, who love the friendly welcoming environment and skilled stylists who actually listen.

I wanted to open an inclusive salon/barbers because we have had so many horrible experiences in the chair and I actually hated getting my own hair cut. I seem to have attracted a clientele I can relate to and made a welcoming place where everyone feels safe – that’s where the kitchen idea came from as having a wine with friends and a few foils was a long recurring factor in my career and always preferred the relaxed non judgmental side of the industry.

Are there specific initiatives or events that have contributed to creating a welcoming space for individuals from diverse backgrounds, including the LGBTQ+ community?

I feel diversity is a hard topic to measure, especially with salon teams. My team is based on their skill levels first, client relationship, integrity and ability to adapt to each clients needs making them the most diversely skilled in all aspects, regular training, plus we all have our own specialities and unique offerings.

Pronouns are a big part of salons being more inclusive and have respect for individuality, but we need to remember that pronouns can still be a sensitive subject for some or not even a thought for others, so try not to force them if there is a hesitance as that can be just as damaging as disregarding another’s.

Representation is crucial. How does your salon ensure that the team reflects the diversity of your clientele?

Kitch never need to recruit – we attract like-minded stylists who truly understand our salon ethos.

How do you empower your staff to be sensitive to the unique needs and preferences of LGBTQ+ clients?

To be honest we are a glorious mix of individuals who have made it our mission to ensure that we can cater for everyone – everyone is equal at Kitch.

What is one product you couldn’t live without and why?

The one product I could never live without is Kevin Murphy Motion lotion – it’s the perfect lightweight curl milk, hydrating without being greasy and is perfect on any texture.

Our Winners November Collective

November Collective is a collaboration between Edinburgh-born hairdresser

Emma-Louise Cantwell

NOVEMBER COLLECTIVE | 3A, BANKTON CENTRE | LIVINGSTON | EH54 9DA

The interior of your salon is truly stunning and unique. Could you share the inspiration behind the design concept and how it reflects the identity and values of your salon?

November Collective is a manifestation of our shared vision, combining beautiful, wearable hair and makeup with a space designed to offer a sensory experience tailored to our client’s individual needs. The salon was named after our birth month and our desire to bring together ‘a like-minded group of creatives.’ The neutral, unisex interior was designed to be gimmick-free and to provide a ‘blank canvas’ in which to work. We wanted to avoid a salon

layout – we didn’t want colour clients having to sit in the same position while their colour develops, so we’ve added in different zones – there’s nothing more intimidating than staring back at yourself in the mirror for 45 minutes! We took inspiration from places we have visited – five-star hotels, local bars and Ibiza spas – we only wanted to do it once – and right.

The ambiance of a salon plays a significant role in the overall customer experience. What considerations went into creating an environment that not only looks beautiful

but also enhances the comfort and enjoyment of your clients?

Crafting an ambiance that enhances the overall customer experience was a priority in our salon’s design process. The salon’s design, spanning 150 square metres over two floors, was meticulously planned to provide a bespoke service for our clients. We aimed to create a space that provides a sensory experience that adjusts to each client’s individual needs, and considered details such as lighting, comfort, flow and scent to ensure we created a beautiful space that appeals to a diverse range of clients.

Your salon’s interior seamlessly combines modern aesthetics with classic elements. How did you strike a balance between timeless elegance and contemporary design trends, and what message does this fusion convey to your clients?

Balancing timeless elegance with contemporary design trends was a deliberate choice. Winning the new building over giants like Starbucks and Tesco was a challenge, but Emma-Louise’s pitch showcased our vision for a unique space, winning the landlord over. We were granted full creative control, resulting in a beautiful salon flooded

with natural light thanks to 32 Crittall-style windows which act as ‘picture frames’ to the views outside – the main section looks out on Murieston Water and stunning woodland, which changes beautifully through the seasons. We incorporated classic elements like vintage-inspired furniture and subtle architectural details while infusing modern aesthetics through sleek lines and innovative design elements. We hate the idea that a customer might feel that they don’t belong in our salon, so we’ve worked hard to create somewhere that’s inclusive and honest. Our clients want to look like the best version of themselves – it’s about taking the ‘best bits’ and amplifying them.

Many salons opt for a specific theme or colour scheme in their interiors. What guided your choice of colours, textures, and overall decor, and how do these elements contribute to the overall atmosphere you aim to create?

The design inspiration came from our travels, incorporating elements from five-star hotels, local bars, and high-end spas. Upstairs, the glass-fronted beauty mezzanine showcases makeup stations and communal areas, emphasising the versatility of the salon experience. We recognised the changing dynamics of work and lifestyle, especially post-lockdown, and designed the space to allow clients to make the most of their time at the salon. Whether reading a book, catching up on work, or simply enjoying the breathtaking scenery, our facilities are available for clients to use and immerse themselves fully in the November Collective experience.

Judges comment: “What a relaxing ambience November Collective have created. A truly thoughtful layout and fabulous choice of colour. I would love to get my hair done here.”

Our Finalist

Gritt London

Gritt London are passionate about delivering and educating each individual client on their hair journey in salon and at home, creating bespoke home hair packages as well as tips and tricks to keep you looking amazing inbetween your appointments

GRITT LONDON | 79 ABBEVILLE ROAD | LONDON SW4 9JN

The interior of your salon is truly stunning and unique. Could you share the inspiration behind the design concept and how it reflects the identity and values of your salon?

The concept was to create a space that rejected any clichés or standard salon conventions. We wanted it to stand out from the crowd. Our dream was to achieve a look that epitomised luxury but with an urban edge – a place where anyone regardless of gender or background could come and feel our vibe while getting a top-class hairdressing experience.

It’s a design-led interior based on clean lines and raw, concrete finishes, complemented with warm copper details. The result is industrial but airy, urban but classy. While it has a high-end feel, every detail of the salon is practical and designed to create a workable environment. We want clients to be wowed by the space, but nothing overshadows the great service they get when they come to us.

The ambience of a salon plays a significant role in the overall customer experience. What considerations went into creating an environment that not only looks beautiful but also enhances the comfort and enjoyment of your clients?

When it came to the lighting, we were OBSESSED. Charles (co-owner at Gritt) even went on a course so he could learn more about the intricate details of lighting design. It’s sometimes seen as such a fundamental thing that it gets overlooked. But not at Gritt.

The problem with many salons is that colour is created under harsh unnatural light and then when the client gets outside, it’s nothing like they or the technician intended it to be. For starters, we installed large LED ring lights, which were elevated over the salon floor to light up the space as a whole.

From his research, Charles knew that we needed a high Colour Rendering Index (90+) to replicate daylight on the overhead lights that would sit over each workspace. Each light has its own unique rendering to compensate for how much daylight the space under

LUXURY

The copper details that weave their way from the logo through to signage and a purpose-built mesh cage that screens off the backwash area give it all a hint of luxury and softness

it captures. The drawback with a high CRI is that it creates shadows on the client’s faces – not a good look. To overcome this, we installed soft, contouring LED backlights on the mirrors. It took a lot of experimentation to get it right, but the result is lighting that is functional and real but makes the client look great too. It’s perfect lighting, even if we say so ourselves.

Your salon’s interior seamlessly combines modern aesthetics with classic elements. How did you strike a balance between timeless elegance and contemporary design trends, and what message does this fusion convey to your clients?

It was never our intention to create a ‘gender neutral’

INTERIORS
22 | hair | SPRING

salon but we now have a 60% uplift in male clients. We’re not a textbook ‘pretty’ salon and we’re not all hard edges either. I guess we’ve created a space where anyone – whoever they are – can experience the best possible hair experience in a totally stylish place.

Many salons opt for a specific theme or colour scheme in their interiors. What guided your choice of colours, textures, and overall decor, and how do these elements contribute to the overall atmosphere you aim to create? Our first challenge when planning the look of the salon was finding a builder who could understand our vison. Plenty said it would never work. But we believed in it and were determined to see it through. The base palette is neutral – originally we painted everything bright white. The idea was

“Concrete is our main material and it’s a thread that runs throughout the scheme.”

to create a blank canvas and draw the eye to certain elements. We soon realised it felt hollow. But nobody gets it right first time.

We overcame this by painting the ceilings dark grey. It instantly changed the vibe and warmed up the environment. The result is clean but warm, airy and with a spacious feel.

FINALIST

We are delighted to announce Gritt London are finalists in this year’s Salon Interior of the Year Award

Concrete is our main material and it’s a thread that runs throughout the scheme. It’s hardwearing, tactile, neutral and versatile. From the flooring to the counter tops, it’s been used throughout the salon and its grey, neutral tones influence the colour palette for our entire branding. The copper details that weave their way from the logo through to signage and a purpose-built mesh cage that screens off the backwash area, give it all a hint of luxury and softness.

The attention to detail in your salon’s interior is remarkable. Can you share any specific features or design elements that you believe set your salon apart from others, and how do these details enhance the overall customer experience?

One feature that is perhaps more critical than any other in a salon is the reception desk and in lots of salons it can be bulky and positioned right as you walk through the door. We think this feels overwhelming, and too much ‘in your face’. What we really wanted was to give a sense of a friendly welcome that draws people in and encourages them to come in and SEE the salon.

So, the natural solution was to move it to the back. It’s maybe eight paces away from the door but it makes all the difference. Anyone coming through the door now sees the salon and connects with the front of house. That small but vital journey makes all the difference in someone making up their mind about whether this is a place for them.

We both loved the idea of crafting something from concrete. Charles explored the options and everything he came up with was either ridiculously expensive or with a crazy lead time. In the end, we knew what we wanted, so we worked with our builder to create something entirely bespoke. In order to make something that appears virtually seamless, the builder constructed a frame from cinder blocks then used concrete rendering to give it a hand poured look. The final touch was to get the logo etched in copper and mounted on the front. It’s simple but it works so well.

We spoke to a trio of talented barbers that head the salons who made the finals of the Hair Awards 2024 Men’s Specialist Salon

Barbering

As a seasoned barber, how do you foresee the future of barbering in the UK evolving, especially considering the dynamic trends and preferences in grooming and hairstyling?

Oliver I would say that we’re going to see a lot of very short shapes, like skin fading and looks that are more tailored to the individual. Regardless of gender, there’s a shift towards shorter styles. One thing that we’ve just added is a service for gender fluid short haircuts, because we’re seeing an increase in female and non-binary clients. Overall, we’re looking at hair on a more united level, cut-wise things are going to get softer, easier and lower maintenance.

Scott I feel the future of barber shops is to be more inclusive and welcoming to everyone. Barbering trends can be seen on all genders and we have a wide mix of barbering clients who enjoy a salon environment while getting their hair done.

“Social platforms are a great way of gaining inspiration and trends, showing your skills to new clients and to see the latest tools.”

Charles The future of barbering in the UK is huge. The industry is getting bigger and bigger and the standards are getting higher every day. Trends and fashion are really taking over the everyday haircuts we see in our industry which is really exciting for us barbers. We are seeing longer hair in barbering and also more creative cuts which is evolving our industry as we have stepped away from just a quick in and out short haircut.

With the rise of men’s grooming as a significant industry trend, how do you think barbershops will adapt to meet the changing needs and expectations of clients in the coming years?

Oliver Education has always been key and will continue to be. Sadly, some barber shops lack that fundamental education when it comes to scissor cutting and sectioning and styling. There’s always going to be specialists and I think the shops that just focus on easy, quick, quite basic haircuts will have their place. I think it’s important that the barber shops who want to specialise in more technical work continue to stick to their guns because that extra skill is what makes them really stand out.

Scott During lockdown, I feel it was the first time people had a chance to self-care and as a result, many came out of lockdown with a fresh mindset. That’s given people a fresh mindset and new expectations

Oliver There’s definitely going to be a few things which are going to make our job easier. There are more electronic tools, which make our life less fun and less creative but improve consistency and results at the same time. Marketing to the right demographic is also relatively easy and is helped by technology. There are even developments such as AI mirrors where at just a flick of a switch, your client can now see themselves in the mirror with different hairstyles, different head shapes, different hair colours. But of course, the real art is in recreating it and as far as I’m concerned, that can never be replaced by technology.

Scott Search engines and images are being used more and more during consultations. Social platforms are a great way of gaining inspiration and trends, showing your skills to new clients and to check out latest tools. Our online booking system is great for clients to book their appointments out of business hours.

Charles Technology has played a huge role in transforming the barber industry. What and who we can reach now on different platforms is incredible. Customers can feel engaged and comfortable with you before they even come into the salon. Technology has also made a huge impact on how customers can now book in to the barber shop rather than waiting in a shop for their turn.

“Education has always been key and will continue to be. Sadly, some barber shops lack that fundamental education when it comes to scissor cutting and sectioning and styling.”
OLIVER HILL

about what they want to get out of their time in the chair. We should be treating clients as individuals and adapting our skills to their needs.

Charles Barbershops are adapting as we speak. In the last 5 years I have seen a huge difference in the level and services barbershops are offering. We are adapting and meeting the changing needs by educating each other, and sharing experiences with one another.

Technology has played a role in transforming various industries. How do you envision technology influencing the barbering profession in the UK, both in terms of tools and customer engagement?

The concept of male self-care and grooming has gained prominence. How can barbershops continue to position themselves as spaces that not only provide excellent haircuts but also offer a holistic grooming experience for their clients?

Oliver I’d say that comes down to customer care and at MaxOliver. that’s something we put on a pedestal alongside education. It’s about offering the whole experience and creating that feeling of being welcome, as well as doing the best possible job –from walking in the door and being acknowledged, returning clients being remembered, introducing ourselves to the client and inviting them to sit down in the chair and to be listened to, and receive great advice. And obviously, the technical haircut to

28 | hair | SPRING
FEATURE

be done well, to suit their hair type and their ability to style it at home. Giving the aftercare advice and rebooking for the future as well as giving your full attention to the client even in busy times. And then it’s about the environment – the music, the language you use, which is very important. It’s not just about who you’ve got in your chair, it’s about everyone in the shop who might be listening as well. These things all add up to a great environment and ultimately a five-star experience.

with our team. The more skill and understanding you have, the easier your job is. Even when a client says “same as last time”, I still go into consultation mode. What are you liking about it, how long has it been since your last haircut, any bits annoying you, what grew out fastest? Each time, I do another consultation, even though it’ll be a much shorter one but just after those few questions, I know exactly what I did last time and more importantly, I know exactly what I’m going to do this time.

“It is so important to keep an eye on up-andcoming trends and the latest fashion. To stay ahead of the game we should all be educating ourselves and doing research.”
CHARLES ROSE

Scott We need to think of the whole experience. We opened a kitchen themed salon, as we enjoy the camaraderie of having your hair done in the kitchen and wanted to recreate that feeling, but in a salon. Clients’ experience starts from the moment they walk through the door – the welcome consultation is just as important as the cutting and styling. Find what makes you different to other barber shops and think why a client would come back to you instead of going elsewhere. A big thing for us was also that while the customer experience is paramount, we wanted to create a place we want to work too.

Charles I have always seen barbershops as ‘safe places’ This is where your client can come in relax, get anything off the chest they need to. As barbers we need to make them feel relaxed, and so offering them the full experience, which should include professional products which clients can take away to look after their hair at home before their next cut.

In an ever-evolving landscape, how important is continuous education and staying abreast of industry trends for barbers to remain successful and relevant? How do you personally stay updated and inspired in your craft?

Oliver Well that depends how successful and relevant you would like to be!! Some people are quite happy to pick up the pieces and be a little bit behind the time, but I think for myself and my team, it’s very important for us to be the best and to be seen as leading the way. There’s always room for knowledge and education is so important. We put that at the very, very top tier behind the scenes

To stay updated and inspired you have to be brave, get creative and don’t be afraid to try different stuff. Even if you know something really well, try and do it in a different way. It’s not about over-complicating, just try to see it in a creative way. When you’re educating your new team members, it’s important to give the information basically and efficiently so they’re able to pick it up and understand it quite quickly. But beyond that, when you’ve been cutting hair for a long time, you don’t want to be doing the basic puzzles, you want to be doing the complex ones. It’s important to challenge yourself to stay creative.

Scott Personally, I get a lot of my inspiration from my clients – they are always ahead of the trends and have great ideas, I also follow fellow barbers on social media. There are so many how-to videos online and if you filter through you can pick up some great tips.

Charles It is so important to keep an eye on up-and-coming trends and the latest fashion. To stay ahead of the game we should all be educating ourselves and doing research on this. I personally have an hour every week to research the next trends, or to go through new hair styles on a head block. I love to follow other barbers on platforms to see what they are doing and ask them questions about how they have achieved their look. I learn from all barbers who are around me and always ask questions, it doesn’t matter if you have been doing it 1 month or 50 years, you can always learn. That is why I love our industry because it is evolving all the time.

Ditch a Decade

Have you ever looked in the mirror and been disappointed in the reflection, questioning your current style and comparing yourself to a younger version of yourself? Celebrity stylist Andrew Barton has launched a new package, exclusively available at Bloom Salons, where he offers to transform his clients’ look with a groundbreaking service

Andrew’s ‘Ditch a Decade’, was designed to revitalise your look and elevate your confidence. Priced at just £395, this comprehensive appointment includes a personalised Zoom consultation with Andrew himself, followed by a bespoke colour session led by Bloom’s expert colourists and a flawless cut and finish by Barton himself.

We spoke to Andrew about the package and about his illustrious career and transformative expertise which was showcased on the popular makeover show ‘10 Years Younger.’

Andrew, could you tell us a bit about your background and your journey in the hairdressing industry? What inspired you to create the “DITCH A DECADE” package at Bloom hair salons?

With over three decades of experience in hairdressing, I’ve had the privilege of being recognised as hairdressing royalty, winning awards like British Hairdresser of the Year and British Hair Icon. Throughout my career, I’ve had many hats, I’m currently serving as the UK Creative Ambassador for Keune. Despite my role as the creator of the Ditch a Decade package, I still have time for regular appointments at all Bloom salons in London, Glasgow, and Aberdeen.

The inspiration behind Ditch a Decade stems from my experience as the resident hairdresser on “10 Years Younger”. Great hair holds immense

significance for people – it boosts confidence, self-esteem, and overall well-being. Ageing can often chip away at one’s confidence, but a customised haircut and colour can truly rejuvenate how someone looks and feels. Despite societal taboos around discussing antiageing, many of us strive to look and feel our best as we mature. If our team’s work can make someone feel like they’ve shed a decade, then we’ve achieved our goal!

With the bespoke colour appointment, luxury hair treatment, and cut with you, what specific techniques or approaches do you and your team employ to address the unique needs of clients seeking a more youthful and vibrant look?

At Bloom salons, we are deeply passionate about providing personalised advice for each and every service. We understand that there’s no one-sizefits-all solution. Instead, it’s about truly listening to our guests and ensuring that their needs are heard and understood. As a hair stylist, I recognise that our guests want to express their identity and personality through their appearance, whether it’s their clothes, makeup, or hair. Some may prefer subtle changes, while others crave something attention-grabbing. We embrace this diversity and tailor our techniques accordingly.

“I HAVEN’T HAD A BAD HAIR DAY SINCE”

“My natural hair is blonde, but it's going grey. It's quite fine and wavy, but can be a bit unruly and frizzy. I went for my appointment with Andrew Barton to ‘Ditch a Decade.’ During my consultation with him, he suggested one of two options: the first was to highlight it or to have a full blonde tint, taking the colour back to what it would have been when I was younger. He mentioned that this would make it smoother and, in his words, ‘more glamorous.’ Considering he was the expert and saw me with a fresh pair of eyes, not stuck in the rut that I was, I chose his preferred option, which was the full colour.

Six months on, I can honestly say that he was right. It does make me look younger. When I walk past the mirror in our hall every morning, I no longer look into it thinking I am getting old. Instead, I think I look good, which is a big thing because for years I didn’t like what I saw at that moment. Losing the grey and ash blonde highlights has warmed up the colour of my skin and really made a difference to my complexion.

I am so glad I let Andrew Barton do what he thought was best with my hair. I loved the cut as well, and six months on, I don’t think I have had a bad hair day since. The condition is much richer and smoother, and it looks so much more luxurious. I would definitely recommend this to anyone.”

We believe that youthful, vibrant hair is characterised by shine and vitality. Often, when people feel their hair is dull, it can make them feel older. Therefore, we focus on techniques that enhance shine and promote hair vitality, ensuring that our clients leave feeling rejuvenated and confident.

Home care is often underestimated in maintaining salon results. How do the Keune products included in the package contribute to extending the longevity of the salon experience and ensuring clients can maintain their rejuvenated look between appointments?

Providing guests with a takeaway bag of topquality, personalised haircare products ensures that the health and vitality of their hair is maintained long after they leave the salon. At Bloom salons, every guest receives tailored recommendations for home haircare, starting with a cleansing product to nourish both the hair and scalp.

In your experience, how does the combination of expert haircare and styling contribute to not just looking younger, but also feeling more confident and empowered in one’s appearance?

Great hair undoubtedly has the power to make someone appear younger, feel refreshed, and yes, even feel younger. While a party animal might not initially come to mind as someone concerned with looking younger, the truth is, even in our twenties, we’re increasingly focused on enhancing our appearance, and it all starts with our hair.

Whether you’re a busy thirty-something balancing career and family: navigating the challenges of being forty; experiencing the changes of menopause in your fifties; or embracing retirement in your sixties and seventies, the key to maintaining a youthful and gorgeous appearance lies in having shiny, happy hair! As the saying goes, “If your hair looks good, nothing else matters.”

While ageing is inevitable, our Ditch a Decade service at Bloom salons aims to help individuals look and feel their best, regardless of their age.

What considerations should I keep in mind if I want a hairstyle that is both trendy and age-appropriate?

Trends may change with time, but healthy hair remains timeless and serves as both an antidote and a promoter of ageing, all at once. Your hairstyle should reflect your individuality and how you wish to express yourself, whether it’s a casual, formal, tousled or sleek look. It’s essential for your hairdresser to listen attentively to your preferences and assist you in achieving the appearance you desire, regardless of your age.

Should we be following trend in hair colour or should we just go with what suits our complexion?

COLOUR EXPERTS

FEATURE 42 | hair | SPRING

In the ever-evolving landscape of fashion and beauty, hair colour trends come and go with the seasons, enticing us to experiment with new hues and techniques. From the icy platinum blondes of winter to the vibrant pastels of spring, it seems there’s always a fresh trend waiting to be embraced. Yet, amidst the allure of these fleeting fashions, a fundamental question arises: Should we blindly sfollow the latest trends in hair colour, or should we prioritise what truly suits our individual complexion, lifestyle, and personal style?

The decision to dye one’s hair goes beyond mere aesthetics; it’s a statement of selfexpression and identity. Each shade, whether bold or subdued, carries its own symbolism and conveys a distinct message about who we are and how we wish to be perceived. However, in a society bombarded by images of airbrushed perfection and celebrity endorsements, it can be challenging to navigate the line between staying true to oneself and succumbing to the pressure to conform.

We sat down with Heffy Wheeler from HX Hair, Seung ki Baek from Rush and Josh and Sophie Goldsworthy from Goldsworthy’s, who are our Hair Magazine Colour Expert finalists, to discuss the age-old debate of trend versus personal suitability when it comes to choosing the perfect hair colour. We’ll explore the factors to consider, from skin tone and eye colour to lifestyle and maintenance preferences, offering insight and guidance to help you make an informed decision that aligns with your unique characteristics and preferences. So, whether you’re contemplating a dramatic transformation or a subtle refresh, Heffy, Seung and Sophie unravel the complexities of hair colour selection in the pursuit of authenticity and individuality.

As a hair colour expert, what’s your perspective on the balance between following trends in hair colour and choosing a shade that complements an individual’s complexion and lifestyle?

Heffy “It’s taking it straight back to basics in the consultation; I feel that as hairdressers, it’s our job to deliver something that works for both the client’s complexion and lifestyle. It’s the foundation of everything that we do. There are certain questions and elements that need to be considered early on in the consultation process, and then we build on top of that, adapting trends to suit the individual client. Complexion and lifestyle are key factors to consider when any client is opting for change.”

Seung “Recently, this has been a huge topic of discussion in the hairdressing industry as the influence of social media has really elevated and enhanced consumer trends to a whole new level. In all honesty, we need to ensure this balance is much more realistic and educate clients on what is possible and achievable. Many instantly see a colour or a look that they want, but don’t take into account their own complexion, the maintenance required, and the reality of achieving their hair goals. Currently, the balance is much more in favour of the social trend, and we are working hard to educate our clients with our expert knowledge.”

Sophie “From my perspective as a hair colour expert, finding the right balance between following trends and choosing a shade that complements an individual’s complexion and lifestyle is paramount. While trends provide inspiration, it’s crucial to consider factors like skin tone, maintenance preferences, and daily routines. Tailoring colour choices to enhance natural features ensures a timeless, flattering result. I believe in a personalised approach, where current trends are a valuable reference, but the final decision is rooted in creating a look that not only aligns with the client’s lifestyle but also celebrates their unique beauty.”

Can you share examples or insights from your experience where clients have chosen a hair colour that perfectly suits their complexion and lifestyle, resulting in a more timeless and personally fulfilling look?

Heffy “Our clients come to us expecting us to know what’s going on and what the latest trends are. We are based in a small mining town that moves at a slower pace, yet our clients rely on us to deliver the most up-to-date trends.”

Seung “Absolutely – this happens regularly when we are on the same page, and the client

Hair colour trends often come and go. How can someone navigate these trends to find a style that not only suits the current fashion but also aligns with their personal features and lifestyle?

Heffy “I strive to deliver a bespoke service for all of my clients. I handle a lot of significant colour transformation jobs, and most of the time, it comes down to educating the client on the process. Sometimes, it’s a journey rather than just a trip. It’s about being open and honest and working together to achieve the desired end result.”

Seung “It’s all about finding the colour and look that works for you, experimenting to find your own signature style. It’s important that clients consult with their stylists, and if they put together a mood board showcasing what they like and envision as their end goal, this is incredibly helpful and allows us to reference and provide expert feedback. It’s important to remember that the foundational trends always stick – they just evolve over time and sometimes develop new names!”

Sophie “Navigating hair colour trends requires a thoughtful approach that balances personal style, features, and lifestyle. While it’s beneficial for clients to stay informed about current trends, they should prioritise elements that align with their personal taste. Consulting with a skilled colourist helps in understanding how trends can be adapted to complement unique features, such as skin tone and eye colour. An important factor to consider is the level of maintenance a trend demands versus their daily routine.”

accepts the knowledge of myself and my team. Recently, a client of mine wanted to really push the boundaries with a new look, lightening her brunette slightly and opting for a colour that required little or less maintenance.

“What we went for was a natural balayage, blending into a light mocha at the ends, meeting her request for less maintenance on regrowth while still lightening the look. It suited her lifestyle while giving her the change she needed.”

Sophie “In my experience, I’ve witnessed numerous instances where clients’ choices of hair colour have beautifully aligned with their complexion and lifestyle, creating timeless and fulfilling looks. For instance, clients with warm undertones opting for rich caramel tones, or those with cool undertones embracing elegant ash shades. Additionally, individuals with busy schedules often lean towards low-maintenance colour options that enhance their natural beauty without constant upkeep. This gives them the best of both worlds: a look that appears natural yet still feels bold and on-trend. These personalised choices flatter not only their features but also foster a sense of confidence and satisfaction. These moments of harmony between colour, complexion, and lifestyle truly exemplify the transformative power of a wellchosen hair colour.”

The fashion industry often influences hair colour trends. How do you guide clients in incorporating trending colours while ensuring that the chosen shades enhance their natural features and match their day-to-day routines?

Heffy “It’s about knowing your tones and

FEATURE 44 | hair | SPRING

colour placement to complement the individual. So, if we were looking at Peach Fuzz, for example, one client might have an all-over colour, another might have some colour placement at the front, and yet another could have a similar tone underneath the hair, so it’s not as obvious. This not only creates a bespoke service for the client, but as a professional, I get to really showcase my skill-set and creativity by incorporating elements from the trend to make them wearable and create an end result that the client loves. There’s nothing in the world of colour that we can’t achieve if we have the skills to do so.”

Seung “It’s just that, by guiding them. I always offer them different options and shades, which will complement their skin tone and complexion but also give them a point of difference. No two colours are ever the same, and there is so much room for choice and alternatives. It’s about doing your research following the consultation and sharing your expert knowledge.”

Sophie “In guiding clients through the ever-evolving landscape of hair colour trends influencing the fashion industry, my approach is centred on harmonising current styles with their individuality. I encourage open communication to understand their preferences, lifestyle, and maintenance habits. By considering factors such as skin undertones and face shape, I help clients select trending colours that seamlessly enhance their natural features. Moreover, I provide insights into versatile shades that can adapt to their day-to-day routines, striking a balance between being on-trend and practical. This collaborative process ensures that the chosen

can be inspiring, but they shouldn’t dictate your entire look. Instead, think of them as a starting point – a palette of options from which to draw inspiration. I like to consider factors such as my client’s skin tone, eye colour, face shape, and lifestyle. By understanding these unique attributes, we can tailor the trend to suit their individuality.

“Ultimately, the goal is to create a hair colour that not only looks stunning but also feels authentic and effortless for the client to maintain in their daily life. By carefully selecting elements from the trend and adapting them to suit the individual, we can achieve a balance between staying current and embracing one’s unique style. It’s all about finding that perfect harmony between trendiness and personal expression.” Seung “Always ensure you are doing it for you, and no one else. Embrace your own individuality and if you want to try something – try it!”

Sophie “For those torn between succumbing to the pressure of the latest hair colour trends and choosing a shade that genuinely complements their uniqueness and daily lives, my advice is to prioritise individuality and comfort. Trends come and go, but a well-suited colour enhances personal features and stands the test of time. Consider your lifestyle and maintenance preferences, which are key factors in long-term satisfaction. It’s empowering to embrace trends selectively, adapting them to suit your personality rather than conforming completely. A skilled colourist can help find that sweet spot, blending elements of trendiness with timeless appeal, ensuring a look that not only mirrors current fashion but authentically represents you. My best advice? Don’t be afraid – and that works both ways!”

“Tailoring colour choices to enhance natural features ensures a timeless, flattering result.”

colours not only reflect the latest fashion influences but also effortlessly integrate into their lives, resulting in a stylish and personalised look.”

People sometimes feel pressured to follow the latest hair colour trends. What advice would you give to those who might be torn between trying something trendy and opting for a colour that truly complements their unique attributes and daily life?

Heffy “It’s about taking the trends and breaking them down into individual elements to create something that works for your client. Trends

● Hair colour trends serve as both inspiration and challenge, tempting us to dive into the latest hues while urging us to remain true to our unique attributes and lifestyles. As Heffy, Seung and Sophie aptly suggest, navigating this dichotomy requires a thoughtful approach that combines trend awareness with personalisation. By dissecting trends into their core elements, we can work with our colourists to tailor them to suit our individual personalities, ensuring that our chosen colour not only aligns with our complexion and daily routines but also reflects our inner styles and identities. Ultimately, whether it’s embracing the latest trend or opting for a timeless look, the key lies in staying true to oneself and embracing the journey of self-expression through hair colour.

‘It’s just hair’

We spoke to Afro Salon Winner Errol Douglas MBE, who reigns supreme when it comes to inclusivity for over quarter of a century

What would you say makes Errol Douglas a standout destination for Afro hair, and what aspects of this specialisation do you find most rewarding?

It’s in our DNA at Errol Douglas to be inclusive and cater for anyone who walks through our doors. Our job is to be able to enhance any head of hair and I am very proud that in the salon we can look after anyone, every hair type. London is an amazing place, mainly because of its people. To me, it is essential that our salon has the ability to take care of European, Afro, Middle Eastern and Asian hair. It makes me proud to know that our commitment to technical excellence in all hair types is what sets us apart from other salons. To some, this might be the new way of hairdressing, but to us, it’s just the way it’s always been.

We are delighted to announce Errol Douglas London are winners of this year’s Afro Salon of the Year Award

For those considering a career in hairdressing with a focus on Afro hair, what advice would you offer to help them succeed in this specialised field?

Slowly but surely with knowledge, experience, model nights, the support of your product partner, whatever it takes you can get there. Don’t be intimidated – all hair is just ‘hair’. It’s true that Afro hair lacks hydration, moisture and shine but this can all be rectified with the right products. 50 per cent of you executing a great style on Afro hair is in the products and the rest is technique.

How have the styling trends for Afro hair transformed over the last decade, and what key influences have driven these changes?

The big transformation is that Afro hair has come much more onto the mainstream radar, which is encouraging to see. For 26 years, I’ve been trying to break this stigma, but I’d love to see a day where we stop talking about Afro hair in its own category. I’ve built my career on being an all-rounder and it frustrates me that we can sometimes make textured or Afro hair a marginal part of trend conversations we might be having. I’d love to think we can get to a point where we stop defining it and just embrace hair in all its aspects – men’s, women’s, Afro, barbering, bridal – whatever, it’s all still hair. All hair types should be ‘normal’ now, no more excuses.

FEATURE SPRING | hair | 49

In your opinion, does the consumer market effectively meet the needs of individuals with Afro hair in the year 2024?

It’s getting better but there’s still work to do. That shift needs to come from everywhere – industry voices, product manufacturers, educational bodies. Hairdressing students should be equipped with a range of facts, knowledge and techniques about every hair type right from the outset of their training and on an ongoing basis. It’s essential in today’s world that the curriculum should cater for every area of hairdressing. The role of product companies is massive too. The number of products available has diversified so much and it’s been a gamechanger, but that needs to be supported with better education and training.

From your experience, do you believe more salons should embrace providing styling services for Afro hair, or do you think it’s preferable for clients with Afro hair to seek dedicated salons or specialists?

In this day and age, every salon should be offering a completely inclusive service. Salon owners need to be recruiting in a diverse and inclusive way to create a team who will cater for every kind of client who may walk through the doors and be representative of the realities of the world we live in today. Investment in education and training

“Investment in education and training is critical but salons need to have a wide pool of talent in order to cater for the widest possible client base.”
ERROL DOUGLAS

is critical but salons need to have a wide pool of talent in order to cater for the widest possible client base. You don’t choose your clients – they choose you.

What’s next for the Errol Douglas salon?

Well, 2024 is looking like a very exciting year. We’ve just taken up residency at the Peninsula Hotel in London with our own atelier salon. It’s part of their new spa and wellness centre and it allows the Errol Douglas brand to bring back the craftsmanship and individuality of traditional hairdressing in a beautiful, bespoke space. Meanwhile, our Motcomb Street salon has had a refresh. Behind the scenes, I’m working on a new product range for textured hair so I’m putting lots of energy into that. ●

HAIRCUTS4HOMELESS ARE AS VULNERABLE AS YOU ARE

Haircuts4Homeless have built a community of skilled hairdressing volunteers who give their time free of charge to provide haircuts for homeless people. Today, we are a registered charity with 56 projects across the UK – from Brighton to Birmingham; Peterborough to Portsmouth, offering regular haircuts to the homeless.

Each of the Haircuts4Homeless centres have approximately five volunteers who operate once a month giving around 25-30 haircuts. This equates to approximately 1,680 free haircuts a month; 20,160 per year.

The impact of our work is uniquely measured in smiles. We literally witness their transformation before your eyes. Their demeanour, mood and confidence boosted with the service we give. We often get thanked by a guest who had an interview and got the job; or saw their child for the first time in a long time and felt proud of their appearance. Our return rate for guests is around 50% regulars but we love it when we see a guest for the last time because it means they have been allocated accommodation and are moving on in their life.

With a little help from our friends our work can continue to grow.

Let us be your charity.

Stepping into the world of hairdressing at the prestigious Daniel Galvin flagship salon in Marylebone is a dream come true for any aspiring apprentice. For Eve Opie, who embarked on her journey in August 2022, it marks the beginning of a thrilling adventure in the realm of colour specialisation

Nestled in the heart of George Street, W1, this iconic salon boasts an impressive 9000 square feet dedicated solely to the art of exceptional hairdressing. From its double fronted period building to its minimalist design ethos, every aspect of Daniel Galvin exudes luxury and sophistication, offering clients a one-to-one experience like no other. As Eve delves into the world of hair colouring, she finds herself amidst a team of devoted specialists, honing groundbreaking skills passed down by the salon’s visionary founder, Daniel Galvin himself. We spoke to Eve about her journey into hairdressing, exploring her passion, dedication, and aspirations within the walls of one of London’s most renowned hairdressing sanctuarys.

your time as an apprentice at Daniel Galvin?

How have these experiences shaped your approach to hairdressing?

This industry demands a lot and carries significant pressure, so I quickly learned the importance of organisation and forward planning. Operating within a bustling salon, where expectations are consistently high, demands the ability to think on your feet and adapt rapidly. Consequently, flexibility and a ‘can-do’ attitude are imperative for success. Additionally, fostering a collaborative mindset is crucial. As a member of the team at Daniel Galvin, effective communication and teamwork are essential to ensure smooth operations and harmony, both within the team and with senior members. Developing these skills has significantly influenced my approach to hairdressing. I’ve become more focused, precise, and my confidence has soared. Attention to detail not only enhances precision but also liberates creativity.

The beauty and fashion industry is constantly evolving. How does Daniel Galvin stay ahead of trends, and what role do apprentices play in contributing to the salon’s innovative and cutting-edge reputation?

The Daniel Galvin brand is recognised worldwide, and for good reason. As apprentices, our training is rigorous and detailed; we must pass a strict test before being offered a position on the floor. Achieving this level of excellence takes three years, during which we participate in twice weekly training sessions overseen by the senior team. These sessions afford us the opportunity to work with live models, refining our techniques while also developing our personal style and flair.

Taking the first step

What motivated you to pursue a career in hairdressing, and how did you come to join the Daniel Galvin hair salon as an apprentice?

At 13, I secured a weekend job at a salon near home, and I immediately fell in love with the environment. It became clear to me quite early on that I wanted to pursue a career in hairdressing. After leaving school, I began my training at a local college, but I found that it didn’t provide enough challenge for me. Being ambitious, I aimed high. My particular interest lay in hair colouring, and knowing that Daniel Galvin held the best reputation in the industry, I reached out to them. Subsequently, I was offered a trial at their Marylebone salon, which needless to say, went very well!

Can you share some of the most valuable skills and techniques you’ve learned during

Additionally, we benefit from guest sessions with leading experts in the hair and beauty industry. Just this week, for instance, we spent a day at the flagship L’Oreal Academy here in London. These opportunities provide access to industry leaders, enabling us to discuss new innovations and techniques, trial the latest products, and have the time and space to experiment and grow creatively.

Working at a prestigious salon like Daniel Galvin must provide unique opportunities. Could you highlight some memorable moments or projects that have stood out to you as an apprentice, and how they have contributed to your professional growth? As mentioned above, time spent with industry leaders and experts is invaluable, but I am fortunate to work alongside world-class colourists and stylists every day here at Daniel Galvin! The apprentices are rotated every few months, allowing us to get to know

all the seniors and observe how they work. It always amazes me just how much I learn by assisting them. Additionally, once a year, the senior team hosts a ‘soiree’ to foster creativity and talent. Colour and stylist juniors team up to put on a show based on a different theme each time. We put together a whole ‘look’ – makeup, fashion, and even the music – all to best showcase the hair we have created. It’s a great chance to experiment and unleash creativity, but it’s also a fantastic opportunity to take the reins and push ourselves professionally.

Customer service is a crucial aspect of the salon experience. How do you ensure that clients receive exceptional service, and what steps have you taken to build

into hairdressing

REPUTATION

positive relationships with them during your apprenticeship at Daniel Galvin?

Customer service has to be exceptional. The basics always come first: smile, eye contact, clear and polite communication. However, each client is unique, and you should adapt your approach to ensure that you make each and every one feel valued. For example, some people love to chat, while others prefer a little distance – all preferences are fine, and we aim to ensure everyone has the experience they want or need on that day. Daniel Galvin has a very loyal clientele, and over time, you do get to know your clients and build rapport with them. In this way, you can anticipate what they might need and offer that more personal touch to make them feel extra special – whatever that might be.

In the quest for the perfect mane, many turn to the promise of hair supplements, hailed as a miraculous elixir for promoting growth, shine, thickness, and strength. With a plethora of products flooding the market, each claiming to be the key to unlocking the secret to luscious locks, it’s essential to delve deeper into their efficacy and understand the science behind their purported benefits

Exploring the science behind Hair Supplements

Hair supplements come in various forms, ranging from capsules and powders to gummies, each boasting a unique blend of nutrients and botanicals aimed at nurturing hair health from within. These formulations often include a cocktail of ingredients such as biotin, vitamins C and E, collagen, folic acid, omega-3 fatty acids, and a myriad of herbal extracts like ashwagandha and ginseng, all supposedly working in harmony to stimulate hair growth and vitality.

However, while the allure of achieving Rapunzel-worthy tresses is undoubtedly enticing, it’s crucial to separate fact from fiction when it comes to the efficacy of these supplements. Despite their widespread popularity and endorsement by celebrities and influencers alike, the backing of health professionals remains scarce. Rarely do these

products receive the stamp of approval from medical experts, leaving consumers to navigate the murky waters of hair care on their own.

To shed light on the efficacy of hair supplements, we spoke to Anabel Kingsley, Brand President and Consultant Trichologist at Philip Kingsley to discuss the truth behind the hype: “When it comes to which supplements to take, it really varies from person to person. Everyone’s diet is slightly different, as are health and gut absorption factors. People who menstruate are likely to benefit from a supplement containing Iron, Vitamin C (helps with iron absorption), L-lysine (helps body to store iron) and Vitamin B12. Iron and ferritin (stored iron) deficiency are one of the most common causes of excessive daily hair shedding in women. Vitamin D3 is another supplement ingredient everyone, including men, should look

out for as Vitamin D deficiency is incredibly common, and it can impact hair growth cycling –every hair follicle has a Vitamin D receptor.”

While certain nutrients have been linked to improved hair health, the key lies in understanding their role and addressing any underlying deficiencies that may be hindering optimal hair growth. Nutrients such as biotin, folic acid, Vitamin E, and zinc have garnered attention for their potential to promote hair health. Biotin, in particular, is touted for its ability to enhance the structure of keratin, a protein abundant in hair, while folic acid supports cell production, aiding in the regeneration of healthier hair cells. Similarly, Vitamin E acts as a powerful antioxidant, combating oxidative stress that can compromise hair health, while zinc plays a crucial role in stimulating hair growth and preventing alopecia.

Resident trichologist at PowerYourCurls, Dr Faisal Ahmed Hammadi says: “When it comes to specific ingredients or formulations for optimal results, most vitamins present in hair supplements exceed the required levels. However, for hair health, I recommend formulations containing biotin and Vitamin E.”

While some supplements may hold promise for individuals with existing nutrient deficiencies impacting hair health, their efficacy in those without such deficiencies remains questionable. Moreover, excessive reliance on supplements as a quick-fix solution for hair concerns may overlook underlying issues that require medical attention, such as thyroid disorders or

female pattern baldness. “Regarding scepticism surrounding their effectiveness, I firmly believe supplements deliver tangible results.” says Dr Hammadi, “My advice is to start with Vitamin E supplements for hair lacking lustre or experiencing split ends. Biotin is recommended for weak hair prone to breakage. Additionally, for thinning hair, especially around the crown area, Minoxidil can be effective, although it’s considered medication rather than a supplement.”

Therefore, while the allure of achieving pictureperfect locks may tempt many to reach for

“When it comes to which supplements to take, it really varies from person to person.”
ANABEL KINGSLEY

the latest hair supplement craze, it’s essential to approach these products with a critical eye. By understanding the role of key nutrients in promoting hair health and addressing any underlying deficiencies, individuals can embark on a journey towards luscious locks that radiate vitality from within. “Hair health is often linked to overall well-being,” Kingsley adds, “These supplements not only improve hair but also benefit skin, nails, and even eye health, including lashes. A balanced diet, rich in fresh, green leafy vegetables and fruits, complements the effects of supplements on beauty.”

In crafting EPITOME, our latest hair collection for Haringtons, inspiration was drawn from the timeless elegance of iconic fashion houses, Celine and Chanel. These pillars of style have long been synonymous with sophistication and grace, providing the perfect muse for our vision of an approachable and realistic collection.

In my first major work for Haringtons, I sought to create images that resonate with our clients on a personal level. The collection is clientfacing, emphasising the importance of inspiring and relatable styles for potential clients. The textures and shapes I’ve incorporated are intentionally real and achievable, ensuring that the looks are not only captivating but also accessible to everyone.

Central to our philosophy at Haringtons is ‘the gift of confidence.’ Our stylists are dedicated to making each client feel like a million dollars, ensuring they leave the salon with a new found sense of confidence and happiness. With this collection, we aimed to capture that essence – creating beautiful, elegant styles that not only exude chic sophistication but are also entirely within reach.

What sets these styles apart is their understated beauty. By using minimal-to-no product, we maintain a super understated aesthetic. The intention is to showcase looks that are not only visually stunning but also practical and easy to maintain in everyday life. Our clients can effortlessly embody the elegance and playfulness of these styles without the need for an extensive product routine. These chic looks are not just aspirational, they are designed to be achievable for our clients. We believe in the transformative power of a great hairstyle, and with this collection, we aim to inspire confidence and happiness in every individual who walks through our doors.
