WThe Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart took a significant leap forward on March 5 with a ceremonial topping-off of the final and highest piece of steel on the construction project. The topping-off event marked a major milestone for The Studer Family Children’s Hospital, marking the symbolic completion of the structural phase of the building, which remains on schedule for completion in the spring of 2019.
The ceremonial beam was painted and placed in the hospital a week prior to the “topping-off ” ceremony. Sacred Heart patients, donors, physicians, associates and construction crew workers were able to sign their name on the ceremonial beam before it was hoisted into place. “This final steel beam is a remarkable symbol of the progress our team has made in the past year, the first half of our construction journey,” said Henry Stovall, president of Sacred Heart Hospital Pensacola and
The Studer Family Children’s Hospital at Sacred Heart. “Like the children and families we serve, The Children’s Hospital is growing — through the new services we are providing, the team members we are recruiting and the physical facility you see in front of you, which was designed from the ground up with a child’s needs in mind. This building is the result of countless hours of planning from our staff, coupled with beautiful execution from our construction workers. I would like to thank our entire team for bringing us to this milestone.” David Sansing, vice chairman of the Board of Directors for Sacred
Heart Health System, thanked donors, construction crews, employees and patients. “This will be phenomenal for the city of Pensacola and the whole region. … It is more than a building. It’s a place to change lives and improve lives for children, for siblings, for families.”

The new children’s hospital will increase access to specialized pediatric and maternity care and consolidate inpatient pediatric services into one convenient location, including services such as a pediatric emergency department and trauma center, pediatric procedure rooms, 72-bed neonatal intensive care unit, medical/surgical beds, pediatric imaging department, pediatric satellite pharmacy, pediatric inpatient rehabilitation gym, child life playrooms, outdoor gardens and a new family-friendly dining venue. In addition to the Ronald McDonald House adjacent to Sacred Heart’s Pensacola campus, the Ronald McDonald Family Room inside the new children’s hospital will offer a playroom specifically for patients’ siblings, as well as a space for families to cook, do laundry, and relax.
