Information for new parents 2024
The purpose of this booklet is to provide you with detailed guidance before your son or daughter arrives at Haileybury in September. The information should answer a large number of your questions, however if any remain unanswered, please contact your son or daughter's Housemaster or Housemistress (HM), or a member of the Admissions team. The telephone numbers and email addresses for HMs are given on page four, as are some other useful numbers.
We are delighted that your son or daughter will be joining us at Haileybury in the Autumn term. We look forward to welcoming them and are confident that their years at Haileybury will be successful and fulfilling.
At Haileybury, pupils' happiness and enjoyment are paramount. We also want our pupils to develop a strong sense of purpose and ambition during their time at the School. At the heart of Haileybury lies a value system that emphasises respect for others, a sense of service, a generosity of approach and a spirit of enquiry. Our aim is to help all pupils achieve and grow within this framework. We want them to be given a range of opportunities so they can discover and develop their talents. We want them to be busy, to get used to meeting their academic and personal commitments, to be knowledgeable, skilled and self-confident.
Everyone at Haileybury is supportive as pupils progress along their educational journey. The Housemasters and Housemistresses will work with you to build up a link that will help your son or daughter to achieve and flourish. Tutors also have a highly important pastoral role and regularly see new pupils whilst Teachers and College Prefects are on hand to ensure that new pupils soon settle in.
During the course of the year, parents are very welcome to attend concerts, plays, sports fixtures, Chapel services, School and House functions. Our aim is to ensure that all of our new families quickly feel part of the Haileybury community.
We look forward to welcoming you to Haileybury in September.

Weekend arrangements
Main School boarders may choose to stay at Haileybury or go home (or to their Guardians) on most weekends. If they choose to stay at School, there are events or trips on both the Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. If they choose not to stay at School, boarders may leave after their sporting commitment or after 3.30 pm on Saturdays, whichever is later. Boarders on a student visa must submit any overnight leave requests at least 48 hours in advance via the i-GTM system.
Parents must give permission to the HM if their daughter or son is to leave School for a Saturday night and stay with anybody else. The host family should also be in touch with the HM to confirm arrangements. HMs have the right and responsibility to say that a pupil cannot leave the School if they consider that it might be dangerous or inappropriate.
Parents must give their consent to the HM or Sports Coach for their daughter or son to travel home from a fixture with another parent or by public transport (provided that the pupil is in the Main School and the HM feels that this is appropriate).
Boarding pupils should return to Houses by 9.30 pm on Sundays or alternatively, with the permission of their HM on Mondays by 8.10 am. The exceptions to these arrangements are on In Weekends, where parents may pick up their son or daughter after Chapel on Sunday and bring them back as above, ensuring that they inform the HM of these arrangements.
There are weekend trips and activities available every weekend. Every Sunday morning the Dining Hall offers brunch from 11.00 am to 1.00 pm, which is a traditional English breakfast and very popular with pupils and staff.
In and Long-exeat Weekends for 2024–25
There are five In Weekends every year. On these weekends all boarders stay at School on Saturday night and until after the School Chapel Service on Sunday morning. With permission from HMs, pupils may go home from 11.30 am until 9.30 pm on the In Weekend Sundays.

Lower School boarding
Flexi boarding
A Lower School pupil has the option to flexi board in Highfield between one and four nights per week from Monday to Friday. The nights a pupil boards must be agreed, subject to availability, through the Houseparent of Highfield, prior to the start of each term. These nights are agreed for a term and pupils are expected to board in Highfield on these nights.
Flexi boarding is conditional on pupils respecting the rules and routines of the House and understanding that it is not a "sleepover". The Houseparent of Highfield and Head of Lower School reserve the right to stop a pupil from boarding if they fail to meet the expectations which come with being a boarder.
Should a pupil wish to reduce their nights, stop flexi boarding or change the nights they are boarding, then half a term's notice should be given in writing to the Houseparent of Highfield. Pupils may increase their nights throughout the term, subject to availability. Flexi boarding nights are charged per school night, and this will be added to the school fees invoice.
Amendments to flexi nights should be kept to a minimum and be due to exceptional circumstances, with a maximum of three changes per term. Requests for additional nights must be made before the end of Friday of the preceding week and will be added to the school fees invoice.
Pupils in Lower School are entitled to three free trial nights throughout the course of their time in Lower School 1 and Lower School 2. These should be booked with the Houseparent of Highfield in line with the notice periods set out above.
Haileybury Parents’ Association
The Haileybury Parents’ Association (HPA) brings together parents, pupils and staff through social events, functions and new initiatives to enhance the parent experience at Haileybury. The HPA is not a fundraising organisation.
The HPA is a committee comprising a representative (House Rep) from each House, plus Chair, Secretary and Treasurer. All roles are voluntarily undertaken by parents of current pupils. A list of the current committee members can be found on the Haileybury website. Parents are regularly updated by their House Rep and by the HPA committee on upcoming events.
The HPA is here to support parents and hopes that its events and functions are supported.
Please feel free to contact the HPA if you would like any further information.

Haileybury Connect
Haileybury Connect is the School’s way of keeping in touch with the wider Haileybury community both in the UK and globally of alumni, current and former parents.
We support our current and former pupils with our University Rep scheme, careers advice and networking, webinars, events and reunions. There are also events for parents and opportunities to offer careers advice, particularly through the mentoring scheme. We make extensive use of social media channels; parents are warmly invited to join our international community on Facebook, LinkedIn and Instagram.
"Mentoring is beneficial as parents like me get the chance to engage with young people and get a real feel for the issues which confront them. They are our future and we have to support them as much as we can" Haileybury parent
For more information on Haileybury Connect please contact connect@haileybury.com
Religious and spiritual life
Haileybury has a Christian foundation and the beautiful Chapel is the focus of the School’s spiritual life. During term, most days start with a service in the Chapel. Five times a year on In Weekends, there is a service on Sunday to which parents and visitors are warmly welcomed. All boarding pupils are expected to attend these services.
Each year a number of pupils, both Church of England and Roman Catholic, are prepared for confirmation and confirmed in services presided over by bishops from both traditions.
Chapel life at Haileybury is inclusive - we welcome those of all faiths and no faith. We are sensitive to the needs of pupils from all denominations and religions and will make provision for pupils to worship elsewhere when they wish. We nonetheless require all pupils, regardless of religious tradition, to join together in Chapel. Any queries about these arrangements should be made directly to the Master.
Haileybury’s Chaplain, The Reverend Christopher Stoltz, is a full-time member of staff and lives on site. He is available to provide support, pastoral care and spiritual counsel to the whole community. The Chaplain has a unique role within the Haileybury community and his availability for pastoral support is highly regarded by the pupils and staff.

Administration and arrangements
Haileybury Parent Portal
The Haileybury Parent Portal is a secure website which is accessed from our main website and will be an essential part of our communications with you.
The Portal includes, amongst other features, general school information, pupil timetables, classroom assignments, teacher contact information and pupil reports.
Shortly after receiving this Information for New Parents handbook, you will receive an email from the School Office introducing you to My School Portal, our school community portal.
Please start by reviewing the Information for new parents page where you can find links, deadlines and contacts for all of the information you will need to refer to before your child starts in September.
Another important area to review is the forms section in the “My Children” tab; this is a good place to start as there are various forms which you will need to complete and also options such as booking individual dance, musical instrument and LAMDA lessons.
Please can we ask that you register as soon as you are able to do so. Please note if you have a pupil already at Haileybury there is no need to register again.
When you have successfully registered, you will also be able to view all the contact details which we have for you and your child on our database in the “My Account” area. Here you can request changes by using the edit option and you can update these as often as is necessary. It is vital that we have your up-to-date contact telephone number, address and email addresses at all times.
If you have any difficulty registering or using the Portal or have any concerns associated with this, our School Office are on hand to assist. Please email schooloffice@haileybury.com or call +44 (0)1992 706 405
Pupil transport
Haileybury offers a bus service to pupils. Using our own fleet of minibuses, we operate bus routes from Monday to Saturday arriving at Haileybury for 8.10 am each morning and departing at 6.40 pm each evening from Monday to Friday. All of our drivers are fully vetted and enhanced DBS checked.
Pupil transport routes
Routes operate Monday to Saturday morning to and from Bishop’s Stortford, Brookmans Park, Finchley, Harpenden, Hertford, Hitchin, Loughton, Monken Hadley, Royston, St Albans, Snaresbrook and Winchmore Hill.
To collect boarding pupils on Sunday evening in term time, weekly routes operate from Buckinghamshire, Kent, Harrow, and London Zoo.
The service only runs if there is sufficient demand, and seats on the buses are limited. Routes are under review and may be revised in September. Parents are therefore advised to place their child on the list at the earliest opportunity.
Pupil transport application form
Please complete this form if you would like to book your child on one of our school minibus routes.
If you have more than one child to book for, we ask that you complete one form per child.
Charges for the bus service are made termly in arrears with the cost being added to the pupil’s school fees invoice. Cancellation of the use of the service requires a term’s notice.
The transport service is generally offered on a whole-week basis only, but there may be opportunities for a more flexible arrangement. Please contact our Transport Coordinator to discuss options on the telephone number below.
Airport transfers and unaccompanied minors information
Haileybury offers airport transfers at the beginning and end of each half term. The cost of this service is added to the school fees invoice in arrears.
If you would like more information regarding the transport service, please contact our Transport Coordinator: +44 (0)1992 706 378 transport@haileybury.com

• Pupils in Lower School 1 to Fifths are required to have an iPad, keyboard case and Apple pencil.

Vision
At Haileybury, we believe in using digital technology to augment and improve our teaching and learning practices. We use digital tools to enhance the way we learn, share information, and solve problems, with the iPad being a central tool in our communication strategy. Our goal as a school is to educate our pupils on how to use technology sensibly and positively so that they can acquire the necessary digital skills and knowledge that will aid them in their future life and chosen careers. We are excited to incorporate digital technology in all aspects of the Haileybury learning experience, which will complement and facilitate work both inside and outside of the classroom and enhance the learning experience of our pupils.
As part of this process, it is a requirement that all pupils from Lower School 1 to Fifths have an iPad, keyboard case and Apple pencil to support their learning.
From September 2024 onwards, all pupils in Lower Sixth are strongly encouraged to have a MacBook in addition to their iPad. All MacBooks used in lessons must be purchased through our chosen suppliers and managed by Haileybury. From September 2025 it will be a requirement for all pupils in Lower Sixth to have an iPad and MacBook.
Device information
All devices used in class must be purchased from our chosen supplier to ensure that pupil devices are easily linked to our systems and can be used from the first day of term. Pupils' personal devices cannot be used in the classroom. This gives the School and parents greater control of the devices, ensuring we can provide pupils with the necessary apps they need for school life at Haileybury. Purchasing devices through our supplier also offers you an education discount. All devices will be delivered directly to the School where the Computer Support Department will configure and test them to ensure your child starts with a fully functional device in September.
Please ensure you have placed your order by the end of July at the latest. Orders after this point will be accepted but please note that depending on item availability they may not arrive by the start of term.
To simplify purchasing we offer a selection of iPad and MacBook bundles. More information on device pricing and bundle details can be found on our suppliers' website below.
All iPad bundles include:
• iPad with 3-year warranty and accidental damage cover
• Suitable keyboard case
• Apple Pencil
All MacBook bundles include:
• MacBook with 3-year warranty and accidental damage cover
• Protective sleeve case
Our recommended iPad model at all entry points to the School is the iPad 10th Gen 10.9" 256GB WiFi model. For pupils entering the Sixth Form, our recommended MacBook is the MacBook Air 13.6" M2 8GB/256GB. Pupils who are interested in pursuing Art in examination years are advised to purchase the iPad Air 10.9" 5th Gen 256GB or higher models.
From September 2025 onwards Middles pupils will be allowed MacBooks as well as iPads in lessons. All devices must be purchased through our suppliers: https://haileybury.edutechstore.zone
Personal devices
It is permissible for pupils to have additional devices (e.g. phones) which do not need to be purchased via the School's supplier. These will be treated as 'personal devices' in the sense that they will not be configured by the Computer Support team, and these devices may not be used in lessons. They can be connected to the School Wi-Fi/ internet and will be subject to our safeguarding monitoring and filtering procedures.
Deadline
By 31 July 2024 please place your order with our supplier: https://haileybury.edutechstore.zone
All equipment must be purchased through our suppliers to ensure that it is enrolled in our systems.
Please note that any new devices that are purchased during the school year need to be purchased through our suppliers.

Overseas pupils
Visas
Your child will require a Child Student Visa to study at Haileybury, if they do not hold a UK passport issued by the Government of the United Kingdom of Great Britain & Ireland. There are a few exemptions; such as, if they have been granted EU Pre-Settled or Settled Status or are in possession of another type of visa which permits them to reside in the UK. Haileybury has been licensed by UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) to sponsor international pupils for the purpose of full-time study at the School.
You will have received details and a checklist from our Admissions Department in order to submit your child’s visa application. We strongly recommend that you submit your child’s visa application as soon as possible but no later than 28 June 2024. Thereafter, we anticipate that visa centres will become incredibly busy. If you have not yet submitted your documents (as outlined on our checklist) to us, please do so as soon as possible so that we can then issue you with a CAS (Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies). You will need a CAS in order to submit your child’s visa application. Should you have any queries, please do not hesitate to contact: visas@haileybury.com or phone +44 (0) 1992 706 353.
Please note that we do not sponsor international pupils to attend as day pupils.
For any overnight absence from Haileybury during term time, including leaving the School at weekends, and for returning home at exeats and holidays, parents must complete the Overnight Leave Form which is on the Parent Portal. This must be completed in good time before a pupil’s departure from the School, which for the purposes of weekend leave means by Thursday of the preceding week at the latest. This is a strict requirement and a condition of your child’s Student Visa. Please note that School staff cannot allow pupils to leave the school site without this form being completed.
Educational Guardians
All overseas pupils are legally required to have an Educational Guardian in the UK. A Guardian is someone who will take responsibility for your child:
• In an emergency situation.
• If your child is unable to return home during exeat weekends, half-term or end-of-term holidays.
• To assist with travel arrangements and other practicalities such as specialist appointments.
• If a child is suspended or excluded from the School.
A Guardian can be a relative or close friend, resident in the UK and must be over the age of 25. Alternatively, there are a number of Guardianship organisations who can assist you in appointing a suitable Guardian to meet your and your child’s requirements. Please visit the AEGIS (Association for the Education and Guardianship of International Students) website for further information www.aegisuk.net or contact info@aegisuk.net +44 (0)1453 821 293.
If you wish to change your child’s Guardian after they
have arrived at the School, please notify the School Office schooloffice@haileybury.com You will then be asked to complete relevant paperwork for approval before this can be actioned. You will have received our full Educational Guardian Policy which is also available on our website

The School Office supplies all educational textbooks. Textbooks, either physical copies or digital copies are provided for the Lower School and Middle School and need to be returned in good condition at the end of the course or a charge may be applicable. All Sixth Form textbooks are chargeable.

Financial matters
General
Our arrangements relating to school fees are set out in our Terms and Conditions, which can be found on our website.
These Terms and Conditions require that school fees must be paid no later than seven days before the beginning of each term. Invoices are normally sent out with details of any extras incurred at least 30 days before payment is due. Please note that overdue fees will accrue interest at the rate of 2% per month.
If, for any reason, you anticipate difficulty in paying school fees on time, please contact our Fees Controller in the first instance on +44 (0)1992 706 219 or pupilfees@haileybury.com.
Extras
Certain items are charged as “extras”, in addition to the termly fees. These include music and drama lessons, learning support assessments, certain trips, and public examination fees. We will publish a list of extra charges every Summer term on our website.
Fee remission on account of absence
Fees are charged for the year and are split into three equal amounts. In an exam year, although pupils may be on study leave before the official end of term, no refund of fees will be granted. If a pupil is absent due to illness or other reason, fees are charged as normal because the place is reserved. It is possible for parents to obtain specific insurance for extended pupil absence due to medical conditions. Please contact the Bursary Manager for details ca.bartlett@haileybury.com
Changing from boarding to day
Under our Terms and Conditions it is not usually permitted to change from boarding to day status during an academic year. Such a change requires one term’s notice and must take effect from the beginning of an academic year. To change from boarding to day in September, it is therefore necessary to give notice before the first day of the preceding Summer term.
If you wish your child to change from day to boarding, please enquire with their Housemaster or Housemistress.
Personal
property and the insurance of valuable property
All personal property should be clearly marked with name and House. All pupils have a lockable space that they can padlock where they can store valuable belongings. Combination and key padlocks can be bought from the School Office. All personal property is brought to the School at the owner’s risk and will not be covered by the School insurance except in the event of destruction resulting from a building fire. This limitation also applies to cash and all pupils are strongly advised to keep cash sums in their possession to a minimum. Particularly where valuable items such as watches, sound or speaker systems, tablets, computers, mobile phones, cameras and musical instruments are concerned, parents are advised to consider insuring them under their own personal insurance policies.
Personal accident insurance
All pupils are covered by the School’s Personal Accident Insurance which incorporates dental cover.

Health
Health arrangements
General
The School has a Health and Wellbeing Centre which is open 24 hours per day, seven days per week. It is staffed by qualified nurses and also houses the School’s counselling service and physiotherapy team. The School works in partnership with a local GP practice, namely Hailey View Surgery, and a GP attends every weekday to provide appointments for pupils who are registered with them.
Registration for pupils
All boarders should be registered with the School GP. Parents are asked to signify their consent by completing the “Family Doctor Services Registration” purple coloured form (GMS1) which we will send you. Please enter the address of the School Health and Wellbeing Centre as the “home address” and the pupil’s home address as the “previous address”. Please supply as much information as possible, including your child’s NHS number if known. The name and address of your child’s last registered doctor is essential. For pupils who have not lived in the UK before, their date of birth and place of birth is required. This form should be completed and returned to the email address provided.
Day pupils may be registered with a doctor of their choice.
A Pupil Medical Questionnaire Form will be sent to all new pupils' parents to complete and return to the School Office in due course. In the meantime, should you have any queries or concerns regarding your child's medical care, please contact the Health and Wellbeing Centre directly on +44 (0)1992 706 288.
Medical examinations
All new boarders and day pupils with identified medical conditions, e.g. asthma, diabetes, epilepsy etc., are asked to attend a medical examination during the first term. The medical is carried out by one of the school nurses and if necessary the pupil will be referred to the doctor. The purpose of the medical is to discuss any ongoing medical issues, record any regular medication and familiarise new pupils with the Health and Wellbeing Centre and the services it provides. The Health and Wellbeing Centre will contact parents directly if there is any medical condition requiring further investigation.
Diphtheria, Tetanus, Polio booster and Meningitis ACWY
The UK Schools Immunisation Service recommends that all pupils have a booster vaccination for Tetanus, Diphtheria, Polio and Meningitis ACWY. This is usually administered during their time in Removes.
HPV Vaccinations
HPV is a vaccination to prevent cervical cancer. The HPV vaccine will be offered to all Lower School 2 pupils. This vaccination would be administered by the Hertfordshire Schools Immunisation service.
Medical treatment during holidays
Should your child require non-urgent medical treatment during the holidays, they can contact the School GP service at Hailey View Surgery on +44 (0)1992 463 363. You can request a telephone consultation, a face to face consultation, repeat prescriptions or complete an e-Consult. If you prefer you can ask for your child to be seen at a GP surgery local to your home address but please make it clear to the doctor attending them that they wish to be seen as “temporary residents'' only. This will avoid the need to re-register your child with the School GP on their return.
Prescription charges
Pupils who are 18 years of age and under (and in full-time education) are not required to pay for their NHS prescriptions.
Information regarding life threatening conditions
Where a pupil has a medical condition - particularly one which may be life threatening, such as epilepsy, severe asthma and severe allergies - it is important that relevant staff are aware of this should an emergency arise. It is therefore vital that the School has up to date medical information for all pupils in our care. We ask that you complete the Pupil Medical Questionnaire form as fully as possible, and we will ask you to update this information regularly.
Medication for boarders
The HM or Matron will be responsible for administering any over the counter or prescribed medication in House. In general, no pupils are allowed to hold medication in their room; on rare occasions, our medical staff may allow this for senior pupils. This is to safeguard your child and others. Parents must provide consent to HM and Matron in order for them to administer any medication brought in from home. Such medication must be provided in the original packing with prescription details on the packaging.
The Health and Wellbeing Centre operates a 24-hour service and therefore it is not necessary, or permissible, for your child to bring their own over the counter medications into the School.
All pupils must be responsible for the safekeeping of their asthma inhalers and automated adrenaline injectors, such as EpiPens, which should be carried at all times.
Counselling service
The School's counselling service is housed within the Health and Wellbeing Centre and the service can be accessed by any pupil at any time.

Additional lessons
Learning support
Haileybury has a designated Learning Support Department, staffed by specialists who are available to support pupils, either on an ad hoc basis or as part of their curriculum when necessary.
Parents are asked to inform the Head of Learning Support of any diagnosed Learning Needs or Disabilities and if their son or daughter has been receiving extra tuition at a previous school before their entry to Haileybury.
During the course of the year, should any learning difficulties become apparent, parents will be informed and individual assessments offered. There is an administrative charge for this service and parents will receive a copy of the report. In the event that extra support is appropriate, this is normally provided one-to-one or in a small group by specialist teachers in the Learning Support Department. Lessons are on rotation to ensure that the same subject lessons are not regularly missed. Due to the academic nature of Haileybury, it is rare that pupils drop a subject to replace it with Learning Support sessions.
When support is required in the Sixth Form, the focus will be on study skills, time management and essay writing. Lessons generally take place during pupil study periods and these lessons are designed to facilitate learning in a general way to promote autonomy.
Those with a Specific Learning Difficulty, are usually identified before entry from information passed on by their prep or primary school, or by parents sending in relevant information, including a report by an Educational Psychologist or external professional. The Head of Learning Support who is the Special Educational Needs Coordinator (SENCo) will contact parents to ascertain whether individual support should continue from the outset. Even where this is not deemed necessary, monitoring by the SENCo will take place throughout the pupil’s time at Haileybury. Those with a Specific Learning Difficulty will be placed on the School’s Learning Support Register to ensure staff are informed and can then offer appropriate support, unless parents specifically request otherwise. Should parents feel that further investigation of a possible learning difficulty is required, they must discuss this with the pupil’s HM or the SENCo, on arrival at the School.
For pupils entering the School after Removes (usually in the Middles or Lower Sixth) it is essential that details of any past, or current, learning difficulties are disclosed. Any exam access arrangements granted previously will be reviewed and if necessary re-assessed as per JCQ regulations.

Individual music lessons
Music lessons are an important part of many pupils' time at Haileybury. They are taught on a one-to-one basis by the visiting and full time staff of the Music Department. Tuition is offered in the following instruments: violin, viola, cello and double bass; bassoon, clarinet, flute, oboe, recorder and saxophone; cornet, horn, trumpet, trombone and tuba; piano, organ, singing, percussion (both drum kit and orchestral percussion), harp and guitar (classical and electric). Starting a new instrument is encouraged, especially for pupils who have not played anything before, or pianists who would like to be able to participate in a group. A number of places are available for a 10-week free trial on any orchestral instrument (strings, woodwind or brass as listed above); please complete the relevant section of the application form on the Parent Portal to apply for one of these.
Pupils learning instruments are expected to participate in orchestras, bands, choirs or ensembles when they have become proficient. To provide motivation, progress and fulfilment, we encourage all pupils to take examinations and perform in concerts. All pupils will be encouraged to improve their general musicianship; music theory teaching in a small group setting is also offered free of charge up to Grade 5 level. We welcome pupils to use our extensive facilities for practice in their free time between the hours of 6.30 am and 9.30 pm.
If you wish your child to have instrumental music lessons, please complete the form on the Parent Portal by Wednesday 22 May 2024.
If your child is to learn an instrument outside of Haileybury, we would still like to involve them in school ensembles; please complete the appropriate section of the form in this instance.
Please note that written notice is required to cancel music lessons. Please refer to the School’s Terms and Conditions for further information.
Please contact Sue Woodrow (Music Administrator) music@haileybury.com. if you have any queries.
LAMDA – performance and communication
LAMDA (London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art) tuition is offered throughout the School as part of a wider programme of co-curricular activities. Our pupils take courses in Acting, Devising Drama, Speaking in Public, Reading for Performance and Verse and Prose. Pupils consistently achieve Merits and Distinctions. All pupils are entered for at least one exam each academic year. Bronze, Silver and Gold medals (the highest grades) give pupils UCAS points which can assist in university applications. Feedback from pupils, their parents and teachers shows that there is a noticeable increase in confidence and improvements in writing, speaking and organisation of ideas as a result of attending LAMDA lessons.
Our LAMDA Acting pupils regularly take lead roles in school performances.
Preparing for an exam in Speaking in Public provides pupils with the opportunity to research and present speeches on topics of their choice and where appropriate link the speech topic to academic subjects.
Preparing for an exam in Verse and Prose or Reading for Performance reinforces topics learnt in English lessons, whilst also developing valuable communication skills. LAMDA lessons take place during the school week and are timetabled to ensure that disruption to academic studies is kept to a minimum. Pupils learn in small groups of four (ideal for our younger pupils as they settle into School), pairs or one-to-one.
For an immediate start in September 2024 please complete the form on the Parent Portal.
Please note, LAMDA is extremely popular and if there are no places available, pupils will be placed on a waiting list and contacted when a tutor or place becomes free.
Please contact Nicki Walley (LAMDA Coordinator) lamda@haileybury.com if you have any queries.

Uniform and appearance
Schoolblazer
We work with Schoolblazer Ltd as our provider - all compulsory uniform items are available to buy via their website www.schoolblazer.com.
The key points of the service are as follows:
• Schoolblazer is an online retail specialist, allowing parents to order anytime and from anywhere at their convenience.
• The website has an “Intelligent Sizing” system to guide parents in size selection to help ensure that garments fit first time. On registration, you will be required to input a few simple measurements and the system will then make a suggestion as to the most appropriate size for your child and even tell you how the next size up will fit.
• All garments arrive fully name-tagged. The tags are sewn on at no extra cost, although the company does charge a nominal cost for the tags themselves.
• The website is bespoke to Haileybury and constructed in sub sections for each area of the School ensuring that, pupils will only be able to access the appropriate garments for their year group.
• Uniform is delivered via DPD, with a normal turn-around of one to two days for name-tagged garments, and a firm promise of all deliveries within three working days, even in the summer. Urgent garments which do not require nametagging can be shipped in 24 hours on a Fastrack service.
• Delivery is free on purchases of over £175.
• Schoolblazer offers free 120-day online returns, whereby your replacement item is dispatched to you as soon as you notify Schoolblazer of your return.

Haileybury school uniform
We appreciate parental support in ensuring that pupils arrive at Haileybury each day correctly dressed. Casual dress may only be worn at various times during the week, as defined below. With regards to appearance, the decision as to what is deemed acceptable rests with the Deputy Master. Parents are responsible for ensuring that any uniform purchased or used by their child(ren) conforms to the School’s uniform regulations.
Last year, Haileybury updated its uniform and as such the new uniform has been phased in gradually. All new pupils are expected to wear the new uniform, purchased where required via the Schoolblazer website.
General uniform rules
Uniform
• This should be clean and smart.
• It must be worn to the requirements stated. If it is not, for reasons of alteration or growth, then a new item must be purchased. The general guidance is that uniform should be worn smartly and appropriately.
• Only three lapel badges are permitted, including a house badge where appropriate. All girls not wearing a tie are required to wear a house badge/brooch.
• Culottes must rest on the knee or below and must not be rolled or tailored.
• Sixth Form skirts must reach the ankle.
• Trousers for all pupils must reach the shoe.
• Shirts must be buttoned to the top when worn with a tie (compulsory for boys and optional for girls) and one button only may be undone if a tie is not worn (girls only).
• All shirts in all year groups must be tucked in.
Hair
This must be clean, tidy, of a natural colour, of reasonable length and a sensible, non-extreme style.
• Girls' hair beyond collar length must be tied back when in uniform (up to Fifths) or sports kit (all). If worn short, this should be minimum grade 2.5.
• Boys' hair should be minimum grade 2.5, and be off the collar.
• Mullets or similar styles are not permitted.
• We recognise that afro-textured hair is an important part of some of our pupils' racial, ethnic, cultural and religious identities and requires specific styling for health and maintenance. We therefore welcome afro-textured hair worn in styles including, but not limited to: afros, twists, braids, cornrows and fades. Non-natural colours, along with extra accessories such as metal cuffs, spirals and rings, are not permitted.
Accessories/Jewellery
• One single plain, unostentatious ring is permitted for Sixth Form only.
• One single pair of plain ear studs (not hoops/rings/flesh tunnels) can be worn in the ear lobe (girls only).
• Bracelets in any form are not to be worn by any pupil apart from those indicating medical need.
• One wristwatch is permitted (smart watches will not be permitted during exam/assessment sessions). Watches with network connection are not permitted. Wearable technology or AI such as glasses or pins are not permitted at any time.
• One fine-chain necklace with a single pendant may be worn, but should not be visible. Jewellery should not be worn during physical education or other practical activities.
• Glasses should have shatterproof lenses which are suitable for playing sports, or specific sports glasses should be used. As above, “smart” glasses are not permitted.
Makeup
• Make-up should be very light, discreet and barely noticeable.
• Only clear nail varnish is permitted. Nails must not be long.
• False nails and eyelashes are not permitted.
• Tattoos are not permitted. Where they already exist, they must be covered at all times, even in house.
Adjustments
• In line with our obligations under the Equality Act 2010, the Master will consider requests from parents and pupils for variations to the uniform for reasons related to disability, race, gender, gender reassignment, and/or on religious grounds provided they are consistent with the School's Health and Safety Policy, and that requests are reasonable.
Casual dress
• After lessons, or 4.30 pm, whichever is later, pupils may wear casual clothes but they are still expected to be tidy and presentable and should not wear mixed dress. If still wearing a uniform, it must be worn properly, with hair and appearance as above.
• Casual clothes may be worn on the weekends from 11.30 am (Lower School) and 3.30 pm (Main School) on Saturdays except for formal school events. Before this time, school uniform or games kit must be worn.
• For Sunday Chapel Services, all pupils should wear uniform, including the blue Haileybury blouse or shirt.
• For appropriate attire in the Dining Hall, please refer to the Parent Information on My School Portal.
• Casual clothes may be worn on trips out of school (e.g. to theatres etc.) if authorised by the member of staff in charge. Pupils should dress appropriately for the destination of the trip and respect the instructions given by the supervising staff.
• Day pupils should arrive at school each day in proper school wear.
Sports equipment
• Equipment is provided for some sports. If you are unsure of any aspect of the games kit, please contact the Director of Sport, Mr Andy Searson a.searson@haileybury.com.
Name-taping
• All uniform and sports kit must be named. Schoolblazer offers an online name tape service.
• It is recommended that casual clothing is named, particularly if the items are cleaned by the School Laundry.
Scholars’ ties and badges
• These are awarded centrally, usually by a member of the Senior Leadership Team.
Please note that all listed items are compulsory for all pupils – except those marked , which are optional. Items marked are supplied exclusively by Schoolblazer – other items may be purchased from a supplier of your choice.

Frequently asked questions
1. How much money will my child need?
Our campus is almost exclusively cashless and cash cards are recommended. Generally pupils are not encouraged to have a great deal of money with them at school. Textbooks, music lessons, and any other “extras”, will be added to your school fees invoice and so usually £20 per week is more than enough. Money can be deposited with your child’s HM at any time and will be kept securely in the House safe.
2. Can my child return late at the start of term or leave early at the end of a term if we can’t arrange the necessary flights?
The term dates for the next academic year are published in this booklet and on the website. It is very disruptive if children leave before the end of term or arrive late as vital work will be missed. If there is a genuine need for a child to be absent from school during term time, written permission should be requested in advance from the Master.
3. How can I arrange private health insurance? There are several companies in the UK which provide private health insurance.
Below are a few contacts:
BUPA 0345 609 0111
Aviva 0800 068 3827
AXA PPP Healthcare 0800 587 0955
4. What sports equipment will I need to bring?
The School will provide basic equipment for all sporting activities. However, those choosing an activity generally prefer to have their own equipment, particularly those playing for school teams. The activities requiring specific equipment are as follows:
Autumn term – girls: hockey sticks, gum shields, shin pads. Lower School boys: hockey sticks. Summer term – boys and girls: cricket equipment.
If you are unsure whether you need to buy specific equipment, please contact Andy Searson, Director of Sport, a.searson@haileybury.com
5. Can I leave suitcases/belongings in school at the end of each term/ half term?
Overseas students can leave their suitcase in the House store at each half term/ end of term. The store is locked, but the School cannot be responsible for any loss or damage to property left at Haileybury.
