E

very season is special on Daufuskie Island and fall is no exception. The heat of summer has cooled and we look forward to enough chill in the air to throw on a sweater and enjoy an evening by the firepit on the beach.

We have many events planned to celebrate the harvest season: Fall Farmer + Artisan Market, Brews + Brats, Annual Pig Roast + Bonfire and the Thanksgiving Brunch Buffet. Fall is also full of tournament action with the Pro-Am and of course the Club Championships. The heat of summer is replaced with the heat of competition! We then look ahead to the Christmas season and we hope you’ll join us at our various festive events, some traditional favorites and some new for this year.

We have had another successful summer in our community. We continue to enjoy strong real estate and membership sales. Our Club is consistently growing with several new families joining our full-time residents in our special island lifestyle. We have welcomed several new Signature, 25 new National and 12 new Non-Property Members this year! We have made several key personnel changes in 2021 and we hope you have experienced extraordinary customer service and Member satisfaction.

arly morning and it’s a warm and still.

The gentle whir of machinery can be heard in the background as the ships gently rock on their anchors. It’s dark, the horse kicks the trailer wall anxiously. No one in the waking world is aware of what happens in these ports. Semi-trucks, haulers, back hoes and the occasional pickup make their way one by one down the dimly lit boarding ramp.

At 12 feet wide, there is little room for error.

Pallets are loaded. Unhook the trailer, secure the ball, back down the ramp perfectly straight and slowly so as not to frighten this unknowing animal. The Hutchin Island Tug, a full football field long. She is as ancient as she is calm.

I make my way to the captain’s quarters as the sun is starting to rise. Moving from the cargo area to the cabin is not for the faint of heart. The ledge of the ship is three feet wide with no railing and large gaping holes for hoses and hydraulics pepper the path. A set of metal stairs up then back down at a steep angle finally leads to the main cabin. A fear of heights or seasickness would not bode well on this ride. Truck drivers and crewmen sleep on the benches in the main cabin. No passenger is allowed to be with their equipment, Coast Guard regulations. The horse will just have to enjoy the ride solo.

The sun begins to rise. It’s dramatically beautiful. The cargo area in front slowly backs from the port, moving its way in front of River

Street as the city begins to wake up. It strikes me as strange how many of us have lived on Daufuskie Island for many years, myself 12+ years, and never once realized the monumental and majestic task that is required to move our everyday items on and off the island. The skill and patience of the barge crew is comforting, their stories impressive. The vessel is in good hands. She moves her way through the intercoastal water ways slowly, as if she moves on her own accord, gently and with little rush.

Full morning greets us as we approach Daufuskie Island. The birds are out, dolphins and the occasional ray break the water’s surface. I wonder how many of us stop to consider the skill required to place this majestic beast safely and squarely on the concrete ramp in front? It’s a perfect balance of windspeed, tide, and forward, reverse then back again. Leverage from the piers out front allow her to move into position.

The horse is calm, he has realized that it was best to settle in for the ride. He surveys his new surroundings through the small trailer windows.

Two quick hours for the truckers, haulers and trucks to deliver their goods to on island then it’s back to Savannah.

I am grateful for this experience and appreciate the men and equipment who make it happen and make living here an even richer experience.

Meet Scott Hillman, Haig Point’s new Food & Beverage Director

Where did you grow up?

I grew up in Dana Point, California.

Give us a brief background of your career I was fortunate to have worked at two prestigious 5 Star Resorts right on the coast, the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel & The Montage Laguna Beach.

In 2006 I left the beach for the Mountain in Colorado Springs, Colorado.

There I worked at the very historic Broadmoor Hotel. I worked there for 14 years in multiple food & beverage management roles. In 2020 I moved my family to Missouri to work at the Big Cedar Lodge. I was responsible for overseeing 14 restaurants with over 500 F&B employees. Wanting to be closer to the beach again, 2021 brought us here to Haig Point, and we couldn’t be happier with this decision! page | 8

Introduce us to your family Shada is my wife of 5 years. She was born and raised in Orlando, Florida. I have two kids: Kaden, 15, and Sophia, 5, as well as three pups, Abe, Duke and Cooper.

How did you get into F&B? I got into F&B because I wanted to be part of making a difference in the guest’s experience. This industry is very fast-paced and always changing. You have to be able to think on your feet and always look to exceed the guest’s expectations.

Favorite beverage?

A good margarita or mexican beer

Favorite thing about the Lowcountry so far?

Knowing that I am not going to be shoveling snow!

The people I have met so far have been very friendly and accommodating. Also I can’t forget the ocean! I feel very lucky that I get this opportunity to live on this

Do you cook at home? What’s your favorite meal to prepare?

I don’t do a lot of cooking at home. My wife on the other hand is an amazing cook. She just cooked up a seafood boil for my birthday and it was delicious!

Favorite place to get dinner in Bluffton/Hilton Head?

Agave Sidebar Mexican Restaurant in downtown Bluffton. Great Margarita!

Least favorite food?

I typically don’t have an issue with any food besides peas, just never liked them.

GOLF

THE TEE SHOT - Jay Garrick, PGA, Director of Golf The Set Up Hitting a great tee shot first comes from a great set up. Making sure you have a fundamentally sound grip, meticulous aim, and a well-balanced posture are all critical aspects for the set up… as in all shots in golf. In addition to those ball position (where the ball is placed between your feet), should be right off of your lead (or front) foot, arms hang straight down (not reaching), and a slight tilt downward with you trail shoulder (or back shoulder). Finally, players that hit the ball to their maximum potential tee the ball fairly high, meaning the equator of the ball is teed up slightly above the top line of the club head. These items at address will give you the best chance at a great tee shot.

The Swing Tempo, Tempo, Tempo!!! The mistake that we see most is the desire to swing with the greatest speed and force possible….as if to hit the ball across the Calibogue Sound. When you watch a tour player on tv, you would never know if they had a pitching wedge or driver by looking at the swing tempo. Always silky smooth and well balanced. Say out loud to yourself things like “Ern – ie – Els” or “1…2…& 3.” Anything to remind yourself that the golf swing is all rhythm and tempo, just like a dance step, unless of course you’re thinking about the Cha-Cha. That might be a little tough.

PLAY TENNIS and PICKLEBALL MONTH The Haig Point Tennis Center has proclaimed October as “Play Tennis and Pickleball Month.” Throughout the month the Tennis Center will have unique and fun special events for Haig Point Members and guests.

FREE TENNIS LESSONS Leading off Play Tennis Month, the Back to Basics tennis clinic is complimentary to all Haig Point Members. This clinic, Tuesdays from 10 – 11 AM, is designed to teach those who have never played or who have not played in a while. Racquets will be provided.

FREE PICKLEBALL LESSONS Free pickleball lessons will also be offered during October. In addition, the Introduction to Pickleball clinic is complimentary to all Haig Point Members; held on Tuesdays from 1 – 2 PM. This is the clinic for new or just beginning players. You will learn basic rules, strategies, and techniques to become a better pickleball player; balls and paddles will be provided at no charge.

TENNIS PICKLEBALL OVERHEADS The lob in pickleball can be a real weapon, but an effective overhead, can tame the lob beast. The next time you are hitting an overhead, think about these tips: a. Turn your shoulders so that you are moving back with your hips and shoulders perpendicular to the net.

They may hit it in every now and then, but it is not as consistent as it could be. c. Make sure your arm is loose and relaxed, you want to feel that you are throwing the paddle at the ball.

PROPER HOOF CARE If you take lessons or own your horse, you are well aware of the importance of the health of horse’s feet. If you are a drive-by equestrian and simply love feeding them carrots and apples or admiring from a distance, you may have never stopped to consider the amount of time and resources required to maintain each horse’s hooves properly. Our horses, like any others in a working job, receive trims and or shoes every 5 weeks from a farrier. A farrier is a highly skilled and trained individual who works closely works with our equine vet to properly trim, shoe, and treat the horse’s feet. Being a good farrier requires years of experience as well as constant continued education in both hoof science and shoeing as medical professionals continue to learn more and more about horse physiology. FALL BOAT MAINTENANCE CHECKLIST Preparing your boat for winter Even though we are lucky to live in an area where we can boat almost all year, some boaters still choose to winterize their vessels. Most boaters opt to hire a professional to do their “winterization” but there are also simpler tasks you can perform yourself.

BEFORE YOU START The best marine mechanics get booked up fast. Schedule your service early to get a good date that allows you to make the most of the boating season without waiting too late in the fall.

ENGINE MAINTENANCE Before you head to the haul-out site, help out your mechanic by topping off your tank and adding a multifunction fuel stabilizer like Star Tron. This ensures the stabilizer is well mixed with the fuel and that it has had a chance to run through the whole system, which allows it to protect fuel in the filters and lines too.

QUICK DO-IT-YOURSELFS • Remove valuables, electronics, linens, PFDs, fire extinguishers, flares, fenders, and other loose items.

Sort them all in neatly labeled boxes for easy unpacking in the spring.

• Vacuum cushions and set them upright to allow airflow during storage • Scrub the refrigerator and freezer to avoid mold, mildew, and unpleasant odors in the spring.

• Set out No Damp Dehumidifiers and an odor control product such as MDG Mold/Odor Control to eliminate mold, mildew, and associated smells • Oil the hinges and door latches so they will work smoothly next spring • Lubricate all snaps and zippers, whether the canvas is left on over the winter or not BOAT DETAILING Do a complete washdown of the boat, using specialty

Wax the hull and topsides, or at least any topside that will be exposed during the coming months. Fix any nicks and wear in the boat paint to keep the paint from disintegrating further.

If leaving your canvas up as a boat cover, protect the Isinglass against damage with a specialty protectant on a monthly basis.

place the bait. It is much easier to throw a net downwind. To get maximum results from your bait, it needs to be placed 90 degrees from the flow of the tide. As your bait ball melts, a scent stream will travel down tide.

Most shrimpers mix their bait before actually going out to shrimp. Bait balls should range from baseball- to softball-sized.

The balls are then flattened to keep them from rolling with the tide. A basket with a capacity of about a bushel that has drain holes in it is ideal to deposit your catch after each cast. The daily limit is 48 quarts of shrimp (heads on) or 29 quarts (headed).

IT’S SHRIMP BAITING SEASON

FALL FISHING

With the cooling weather, shrimp will head from their nursery areas in the marshes toward the ocean. Intercepting them along the way can lead to many delicious meals, but it’s a matter of knowing when and where shrimp can be found in good numbers.

Shrimp baiting season this year runs from September 10 November 9 at 12 PM.

Tidal creeks and rivers, and open sounds or flats are the main places where shrimp are caught over bait. Shrimp caught in creeks and rivers are generally smaller than those caught in the open water. If you can locate an area that holds nine feet of water at high tide and is adjacent to a creek channel or dropoff, you’re usually in business. On low tide, try to stay in a minimum of three feet of water. If you can do that and shrimp a shallow area close to deeper water, that’s even better.

When shrimping at night, water clarity is not normally a problem.

When shrimping during daylight hours, shrimp are extremely skittish in clear water; it’s best to have muddy or roiled water conditions.

Shrimp are attracted to bait like flies to sugar. Most shrimpers will place bait balls in the same location in front of each of their shrimping poles. A net with a radius of at least five feet is the ticket, so placing your bait about six feet from your poles allows you to cover the most productive area with a single cast.

The estuary is packed with mullet and shrimp and the fish are feeding up to prep for the cold weather. Redfish, trout and flounder will be main targets, with biggest days coming in October, November and early December.

Snag a keeper using live bait like shrimp under popping corks.

Popping corks, when fished properly, simulate the sound of fish feeding and tend to draw fish to the bait. They are especially deadly on seatrout and redfish.

Big Bull Redfish (15-30+lbs) are the main target as they are available in great numbers inshore in the sounds and sand bars that surround Hilton Head Island. Sight fishing for tailing redfish at high tide can also still be very good during these months.

Speckled Trout (1-3+lbs) are in abundance during all of the fall and early winter months.
