Great Golf at Stoke in October... The WPGA International Challenge will be returning to Stoke by Nayland for a fourth successive year from Thursday 6th to Saturday 8th October. The 54-hole event is part of the LET Access Series and was launched in 2013 by The PGA to increase support of the women’s game. An excellent hospitality package is offered for Friday 7th October for just £40 + vat per person which includes coffee and pastries on arrival, a delicious three-course buffet lunch and traditional afternoon cream tea. So you can watch world class golf in style from the restaurant terrace – as well as enjoying a delightful walk following the players around the course in stunning Constable Country. One of the local shining stars of the show will be 14 year old outstanding amateur player, Lily Humphrey who recently joined Stoke by Nayland Golf Club. Head teaching professional at Stoke by Nayland, Roly Hitchcock, coached this amazing prodigy originally through England Golf East Region and she has now been in the squad for 2 years. Lily has won an impressive collection of silver ware for someone so young. She has played in Home internationals for England and European Team Championships, and won Bronze in the European Youths championship. She has also won the English Girls U14’s 2015, English Girls U16’s 2016, Fairhaven National Tournament, North of England U 16’s on -15 par score! Winning the Liphook Scratch trophy enabled her to qualify in 15th place for England Golf OOM, and to win a place to play in the LETAS Tour at Stoke by Nayland. The week after the LETAS event, former Ryder Cup Captain, Sir Nick Faldo and around 90 brilliant young golfers aged from 13 to 21 from all over the world will be hosted by Stoke by Nayland for the 3 days from 11th – 13th October for the final of the Nick Faldo World Series, on its 20th anniversary – another coup for the family-owned venue. Everyone is welcome to come and watch both of these top class international events free of charge! For more information please go to www.stokebynayland.com

Lavenham’s First Children’s Book Festival 28 and 29 October 2016 The popular Lavenham Literary Festival is branching out this year with its first book festival for younger readers. An impressive line-up of authors, storytellers, illustrators and cartoonists will provide a mixture of fun sessions involving popular children’s authors and smaller workshops where children can try their creative skills in writing, drawing and illustrating. Headlining the festival is the Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell, with his popular session ‘Ask the Laureate’. On his appointment to the post, Chris proclaimed his intention to show everyone how much fun you can have with a pencil and he will therefore be live drawing the answers to your questions! Chris will pick his favourite questions to illustrate, giving an insight into the laureate world. The lucky questioners he picks can take their doodle-answers home with them, a unique piece of art from one of our greatest illustrators. I am trying to start a weekly / monthly get together of people with Parkinson's Disease. I have had PD for over 10 years now and know how important it has been for me having people who are living with this disease to talk to and who can understand exactly what you are feeling has helped me through the darkest times. I was diagnosed at the age of 45 I was so shocked and frightened and knew little about PD and felt so alone but made friends through forums and joined The Parkinson’s UK Society who have been a great help and my story was in the latest edition of the magazine, ‘Julie's Story’. Please get in contact if you are interested and depending on numbers I can make plans to find a suitable venue for the get together. Please contact: Julie Phillips 07787 407544

New classes arriving during November in a pool near you! Children across South Suffolk and North Essex are currently enjoying their journey with Puddle Ducks which is a baby, toddler and pre-school swim school delivered in a variety of lovely warm pools. Children can have lessons from a few days to 4 years old and have fun while they learn to swim in a safe, encouraging environment. Puddle Ducks classes, which last 30 minutes, will teach activities including swimming, submersion, floating, songs and games. Each session will incorporate rhyme, music and movement. Although fun is at their heart, Puddle Ducks classes are about much more than this. The classes revolve around bonding and play where children don’t realise they’re learning to swim and are acquiring skills that could save their lives. It’s never too early to introduce your baby to the joys of being in the water, as long as you do it in a loving, caring and safety-conscious manner. Your child will learn to not only enjoy, but also respect the water, this has to be one of the most important gifts you can them. We are very pleased to announce we have a new pool in Monks Eleigh. We are starting lessons there on Tuesday mornings from November. It’s lovely and warm, has parking on-site and changing rooms at the venue. It even has a coffee machine! Classes available from a few weeks old! Please visit our website www.puddleducks.com/suffolkessexborder to find out more information on times and prices or give us a call on 01473 356222 to have a chat

What a joy its been to see our riders and helpers back ‘in harness’ for the Autumn Term. First of all, the Centre had its annual spring clean so all the spiders and flies had to move out. Then there was the Sponsored Long Distance Ride in Mid September, which took lots of preparation work and was a great success. (It’s the only time Babs and I feel a bit jealous since we can’t join in!) All the horses were primped and permed ready to meet their equine visitors on the day; the riders who came from far and near helped us raise nearly £3,000 for the Centre, which is fantastic! Thank you everyone. My big chestnut friend Rocky was retired this summer and Lyn is trying to track down his replacement. We have some smaller additions to the herd and they have settled in brilliantly. My photos show Bell being held by Jan in the yard and Cindy multi-tasking in the back paddock. If any of my readers would like to sponsor one of theses lovely newcomers please call our Auntie Di on 01473 658 552, or but better still, contact the Centre and pay us all a visit! With 10 horses and ponies on our books we are always on the look out for help with their care, however little or much can be offered. Then there is a big need for volunteers to help with the riding therapy itself. Our helpers give anything from a couple of hours once a week to whole days, depending on their other commitments. We love seeing new faces being added to the team here, equine or human! When I write again we shall have had half term; I must be getting old to find the time flying so fast these days. Have a good time folks! Website: www.rda-east.org.uk/shelley.html Telephone: 01473 824172

Hadleigh Footpath Volunteers A pleasantly surprising 18 joined us for September’s walk to Bower House Tye despite a rather dismal weather forecast. As it turned out, the threatened rain went elsewhere and we were left with a delightful walk in ideal conditions. Most of the group caught the bus back to Hadleigh but a number of us carried on for a sedate 3 miles back to Hadleigh. For the October walk on Saturday 8th we will catch the bus to Hintlesham then explore North via Hintlesham Park, Mill Farm, Flowton Brook, Flowton, Tye House, Bullen Wood, Burstall and end back at Hintlesham - a distance of 8 miles. If anyone is still feeling energetic we can walk back to Hadleigh, a further 4.6 or 6.3 miles depending on the route we select on the day. We will meet to catch the 0940 bus towards Ipswich (Co-op side) and alight at the Hintlesham George. Those catching the bus to return should make the 1333 from outside the George Everyone is welcome, including well behaved dogs. Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground can be muddy and rough in places. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01473 823328 or 0785 895 5678.

News from Whatfield School Whatfield waved goodbye to our year 6 pupils before the Summer holidays, and we hear that they have made a great start at Hadleigh High School. One or two have popped back to see us, have reported how well things are going, and how much they are enjoying their new school. Pupils from Whatfield CEVCP School have made a fantastic start back after the Summer holidays. The whole school have been following the theme of the Olympics, and what a fantastic time they have had watching the Olympian and Paralympian success! Pupils have been following the competitions, and thoroughly enjoyed making medals, designing opening ceremonies and participating in a wide range of sports. During the Summer Term means time we held our traditional sports week. This was an opportunity for all the children to have a taste of a wide variety of different sports, and this year they included athletics, tennis, archery, fencing, bowling, cycling and parkour among many more. A great favourite was carpet bowls and horse-riding, both activities provided courtesy of kind villagers who regularly support our school. We have a lovely photo of the gymnastics team who reached the county finals, and achieved a fantastic bronze place. It just goes to show as we say about Whatfield CEVCP School, good things come in small packages! We always have lots of exciting activities to look forward to, and as always, if you would like to visit us and have a look round our lovely school you are very welcome. Please do try to come to our Macmillan Coffee afternoon on the 30th September 2016, or telephone 01473 823309 or email whatfieldcps@talk21.com to make an arrangement to meet us. GSOLICITORS IBBONS

Howard, Brenda and Roberto on The Broads Hello dear readers – as the sun was setting on another Summer, I thought that it would be nice for my mother Brenda, our good friend Roberto Vasilli and I to have a few hours on the Norfolk Broads. I had a word with H E Hipperson at Beccles (Tel. 01502 712166) and chartered one of their electric boats for a few hours. My chauffeur Frank polished the stretch limo and we boarded bound for Norfolk. We enjoyed coffee and a picnic en route. The picture is a “selfie” of me and entourage in the launch and we had an enjoyable afternoon passing the back gardens of houses and then along the broads with all sorts of birds flying about and voles and such like plopping into the water. It was a simple outing but great fun and memorable for evermore. Frank’s fruits have been ripening and Maria recently pickled his walnuts – they’ll be quite a treat on Christmas Day. We try to give a good service, we are happy to see our clients as they come in and chat to them on the telephone. Indeed, a client well known to us brought us some papers on a Thursday evening seeking to exchange the next day and we duly reviewed over night and sought to achieve his wishes. Larger organisations just do not seem to offer what I call a good service. Just ten days ago the AA kept me waiting for over four hours when I had a flat tyre. A taxi that was due to be sent took an hour and a half. Even John Lewis has managed to make the most almighty mess of an order for appliances and out of two items to be delivered both were taken away! I had to make yet another visit to John Lewis in Ipswich where the only manager available was responsible for furs and fabrics. No one is bothered about anything. Unfortunately, my mother is in hospital but she is making good progress. It annoys me considerably as I walk in through the front entrance of Ipswich Hospital and pass rows of patients smoking. The higher rates of Stamp Duty Land Tax are payable in broad terms when one buys a second property. It is something that one has to factor into the expenses of buying another residential property. The cost of Conveyancing is only one factor in deciding who to appoint to act on your behalf. The ability to be able to speak to an experienced Solicitor and to obtain pertinent advice is more important. Complicated websites of some of these large conveyancing combines based miles away do not mean that you are going to enjoy a user friendly experience. As I always recommend – use the services that are available on your door step. Howard Gibbons

News from Kersey School Squirrels (Reception) 12 new Reception children have quickly settled into Kersey school life. They have been busy learning new routines, exploring and investigating the school and church and making new friends. Our topic this half term is ‘People Who Help Us’ and we are looking forward to a visit from the Hadleigh Police Community Support team and next half term a visit to a fire station in Ipswich. Hedgehogs (Years 1 and 2) Hedgehogs have had a busy start to the Autumn term. We have been learning about food from around the world. We have been looking at where our food comes from, thinking about healthy food and we are looking forward to trying some different food over the next few weeks. Badgers (Years 3 and 4) Badgers have had a great start to the year, learning all about the Tudors. We have been drawing our own Tudor roses, as well as portraits of the Kings and Queens. We are really excited to be going to the Tower of London in October and hope to learn lots of new facts there. Our Music lessons this term are all about Music at the Movies and we have been looking at how different songs can change the mood of different films. Earlier on in the week we had a Paralympic Day, where the children researched both countries and sports that are part of the games this year. We also tried different sports like; sitting volleyball and wheelchair tennis. The children found it hard to play both sorts, but had fun doing it! Owls (Years 5 and 6) Owls class are learning about Water Worlds, studying rivers. We are looking forward to our trip to Flatford Mill before half term, as we are also learning about the life and works of John Constable. We will be holding a small exhibition of our work on our topic on Thursday 20th October from 9:15am. Was your child was born between 1st September 2012 and 31st August 2013? If so they will be starting school in September 2017. This certificate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I know that the issue of speeding on our local roads matters a great deal to many communities in South Suffolk. We have recently had what I know will feel like ‘yet another’ tragic road traffic accident on the A134 near Sudbury. Of course, each incident has its unique circumstances and our first thoughts must be with the family of the victim; we should not jump to conclusions but await the investigative process. However, what we can be certain about is that this was not the first fatal accident on the South Suffolk stretch of the A134 in recent months and my constituents will be rightly concerned. That said, the A134 is not unique and I have stretches of road across the constituency where residents are worried about speeding, and then there are the junctions of the A12 around East Bergholt which I have previously raised with the Highways Agency. Most commonly, constituents will request amended speed limits for specific stretches of road. The good news is that Suffolk County Council already has plans for speed restrictions on the A134 with new 40mph limits in place from Nayland to Honey Tye and Newton to Sudbury garden centre. Speeding is a particular concern for vulnerable road users, especially those on two wheels or four legs. With growing enthusiasm for cycling nationwide – a passion I share – there has been an increasing focus in recent years on the danger to cyclists on our roads. However, far less attention has been paid to equestrian safety and I recently had the pleasure to visit a group of campaigners in Hadleigh who are part of the national horse riding initiative ‘Pass Wide and Slow’. The campaigners explained that they have had problems with drivers speeding up to horse riders and causing injury to either the animal or rider by scaring the horse. So, a part of this is raising awareness, in the manner of the well-publicised ‘think bike’ campaign. We may also need stronger laws around aspects of reckless driving. We certainly want to keep pressing on with a local focus on specific traffic trouble-spots.

Good Quality Care at a Fair Price

Our canine mascot is preparing to meet his Public at our Autumn Fair (report next month) so it’s me, Ollie, here to give you the feline point of view. For instance, last month Kenneth suggested us cats don’t notice the volunteers, but we miss nothing! Whilst he scuttles around below, from the hay loft I observe the dog walkers; some dragged by their eager charges, others gently coaxing new arrivals for their morning constitutional. Sad mutterings from the kitchen about unhappy Victor, a fellow black cat who has been with us for months. Poor lad just needs someone to care for him and his sore eyes. Now they are talking about Andy, the beautiful grey cat who likes humans and dogs, not his own kind! As I patrol my estate I find the fundraisers sorting books, pictures, vinyl records and cameras for a front garden sale, 10-1pm on 1st and 2nd October. Other books are kept for the “Colne Valley Railway at War” event, Castle Hedingham, CO9 3DZ, 10.30-5pm on 9th October. The ladies discuss the Crafts and animals they are taking to meet Gladwell customers on 22nd October at Copdock Mill, Old London Road, Ipswich, IP8 3LP. Kenneth’s friends from Betty’s Knitters and Stitchers will also be there. After that, lots of lovely items will go to the big Christmas Fair at the Old School, Long Melford on 20th November. As a car arrives with more donated items from a kind supporter I disappear, preferring to remain incognito, unlike Kenneth. Mind you, the Chihuahua is doing a good job but don’t tell him I said so. His head would not fit into his igloo bed if he heard praise from me, Ollie (the Black) Cat. Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare, Stoke Road, Leavenheath CO6 4PP. It seems Rainy Days are here to stay With 4 of the 5 wettest years on record happening since the year 2000 it seems that rainy days are here to stay. Gutters and downpipes that do not have the sufficient capacity to remove rainwater are liable to overflow and in older properties this can lead to water entering the fabric of the building. Deep flow guttering increases the capacity of the guttering on your property by up to 100% reducing the need for additional down pipes and preventing overflowing gutters. Hadleigh based Deep Flow Gutter Systems are able to supply and fit a range colours and finishes including cast iron and PVC sourced from market leading suppliers including Heritage Cast Iron Rainwater and Deepflow Systems. Another common problem with a property’s guttering is blockages. Over a period of time a collection of leaves and moss etc can build up, reducing the gutters ability to remove rainwater to the downpipes. Using a state of the art 10 metre reach Vac system, complete with inspection camera, Deep Flow Gutter Systems are able to fully clean your gutters from the safety of the ground without the need for ladders, scaffolding or articulated boom lift equipment. Contact Deep Flow Systems on 01473 879448 or 07970 828559 deepflowguttering@hotmail.co.uk

Cosford Comment ...from Jenny Antill In recent weeks, I, like many others, have been glued to the radio as the Rob and Helen Titchner saga has unravelled on the Archers. The hour long special covering the closing stages of Helen’s trial for the attempted murder of her abusive and controlling husband was particularly gripping. The deliberations of the jury, as they reacted to the fall out from this all too typical case of domestic abuse, reflected very accurately how different people respond to this hidden but pervasive social evil. The BBC has been criticised by some for putting such heavy emphasis on this issue. Some have also found it ridiculous that people on social media and elsewhere have written about the drama as if it concerned ‘real people’. The truth is however that in the real world people find themselves in abusive relationships more often than might be imagined. A focus on Helen and Rob’s case has served to shine a spotlight on a problem which often goes unacknowledged. Domestic abuse can affect anyone regardless of age, gender or social standing. It is often a key element that underlies wider social problems. This has been recognised by Tim Passmore, the Suffolk Police and Crime Commissioner, and the County Council’s work in the area was recently praised by experts giving evidence to the council’s Scrutiny Committee. Here in south Suffolk, this year marks the 15th anniversary of the creation of Compassion, the Charity that supports victims of domestic abuse in the Babergh area. The organisation supports victims, both male and female, through a befriending service and by offering special training which helps them to escape from the trap of an abusive relationship. The charity also reaches out to help children and young people. The group relies heavily on donations, and has an active fundraising programme. If you know anyone who may be in an abusive relationship and needs support, or if you would like to volunteer, contact details for Compassion can be found on www.compass-ion.org/ Jenny Antill is the Suffolk County Councillor for the Cosford Division. Kangen Water Want to get your health back - naturally? Change your Water - Change your life Kangen Water is a special water that is radically changing the lives of many people around the world. The word Kangen means “return to origin” in Japanese and describes water that has been returned to the state in which it is often found in nature. Kangen Water is produced by water ionisers manufactured exclusively by Enagic, a Japanese company established in 1974.These units are approved as a medical equipment by the Japanese Ministry of Health and Welfare and are used in many hospitals and clinics in Japan. The question is “HOW ACIDIC ARE YOU?” and do you suffer from any of these symptoms? IBS, Arthritis, Constipation, Asthma, Joint Pain, Fibromyalgia, Diabetes, Migraine, Headaches, Obesity, Prostrate and other Colon problems, Heart Disease, these, and many more can be helped and sometimes eradicated by drinking Kangen Water every day. How does this happen? Kangen Water is a powerful antioxidant, alkaline in PH and with anti-aging properties, is a great way to increase hydration, neutralise free radicals, which reduces the acidity in your body improving your health naturally. Kangen Water has a clean light refreshing taste and because of the very small molecules, goes down easily and hydrates your body in seconds. Jenny Mose from Essex has this to say about Kangen Water: I have been using Kangen for a number of weeks now and still can't believe how wonderful it is. After drinking the water for only a couple of weeks my health has improved 100%. I no longer need any medication for IBS and my arthritis has improved. My friends have all commented on how well I look and want to know my secret. I am a huge animal lover and I have many pets one of them a dog, she has a couple of her own health problems that have really improved since I've been giving her the Kangen water to drink, it's amazing to see what a different dog she is, she has more energy a beautiful coat and seems so much happier. I could say so much more about Kangen water, it has actually changed my life for the better. A demonstration and tasting session is being held above The George Public House, in Hadleigh High Street on 14th October 2016 at 7pm. Also, all day at the Holistic M.B.S. Fayre, Venture Centre, Lawford, CO11 2JE on 5th November 2016.

Lavenham Neighbourhood Development Plan 2016 - 2031

OUTSIDE CATERING

A delicious mouth watering Spit / Hog Roast is great choice for any party, wedding or social get together.

On Thursday 8th September, the people of Lavenham approved in a referendum the Lavenham Neighbourhood Development Plan 2016-2031. Of the 537 people who voted some 91 per cent voted in favour of the adoption of the Plan. This will now go to Babergh District Council to be made and followed by them in deciding planning applications in Lavenham. This is the culmination of four years work by residents of Lavenham. Following a scoping day attended by over 200 residents, 44 volunteers came forward to help with the detailed work behind the Plan, which included a survey of all residents (with a 68% response rate), workshops, drop in sessions and written feedback to villagers. Final drafts were also the subject of two consultation exercises carried by the parish and district councils and a review by an independent examiner. The independent examiner remarked that - This is an extremely well written neighbourhood development plan with clear explanation of objectives and logical justifiable explanation of many policies. Those involved in its production should feel proud of their achievement. The full papers supporting the Plan can be seen at www.lavenhamneighbourhoodplan.co.uk And at http://www.babergh.gov.uk/planning-and-building/community-ledplanning/neighbourhood-development-plans/neighbourhood-planning-inlavenham/ Lavenham Parish Council would like to thank all those who were involved in the production and the successful outcome of the Plan, including officers of the District and County Councils past and present. Its pleasing to say that Phase 2 of the restorations are nearly complete all but some finishing work to be finalised during the Phase 3 restoration programme. This is due to the access across the Hurst frame which is completely rotten. The repairs to the Hurst Frame, crown wheels, drive shaft and associated machinery together with three pairs of stones forming the phase 3 restorations will commence early 2017. Our thoughts are now very much on Santa’s Workshop 2016. A major fundraising event where all profits are used for the restoration. TICKETS ARE NOW ON SALE www.kerseymill.net or telephone 01473 829317. Santa’s Workshop this year will benefit from the extra space that has been created from the completion of works to the frame, enabling us to expand upon the event. The unique Santa’s Workshop over the years has grown in popularity and this year the extra space will prove beneficial, incorporating additional activities for the children visiting Santa. We recently received some lovely written memoirs from Philip Fairfax Mason “Memories of a Life” 1912 – 1991. There were 3 generations of Millers within the Mason family, Philip Mason being the nephew of Ben Mason the last Miller here. Phillip describes with great fondness his time spent in the Kersey area. He talks of the well-stocked river, the delicious apples from the orchard, the shingle bank near the mill pool and all the water cress. The walk to church on a Sunday morning and again in the evening, the Penny Farthing bike kept in the coach house, and the abundance of rabbits. Phillip writes, “Whilst I was at Kersey I used to do a lot of rabbiting. My mentor was a retired farm worker, living in a tied cottage on a nearby farm owned by the Partridge family. He was known as ‘Old Ike’ and what he didn’t know about rabbiting wasn’t worth knowing. Either way it was quite a pleasant way to spend a day, performing a twofold service, one ridding the Partridges of rabbits and two to provide Ike with enough pocket money for tobacco and beer from selling the skins of the rabbits for sixpence a time. It made a lot of money in those days and helped him with his pension that was only 10 bob a week. It appears that somethings have changed considerably and others not much at all. We recently provided a tour of the Mill to the friends of Alderford Mill near Halstead. Alderford Mill is a preserved watermill, medium sized , and sits on the River Colne in Essex. It has undergone significant restoration over the past ten years and now has a fully working water wheel and most of the associated machinery. Someway ahead of us. Well worth a visit. Hadleigh Glass transform local property www.thepedalhouse.co.uk

We have a fully equipped workshop for all aspects of maintenance & repair

ALL BIKES WELCOME

When Mr and Mrs Stewart walked in to the Hadleigh Glass showroom they were looking for a piece of replacement glass for their period property near Hadleigh. Fast forward a few months and after seeing the example in the showroom they are now the proud owners of a beautiful garden room which perfectly complements the character of the property with light flooding in from the living room roof design in the centre. The bi-fold doors open up the space to the garden with its gorgeous views – perfect for entertaining in the summer but still giving plenty of light while keeping cosy in the winter – the fabulous contemporary log burner in the snug area of the room also helps with this! The garden room was designed to blend in with the building and was built alongside an existing extension which also opened up the link from the extension to the main building so there is no obvious ‘old and new’ and has changed the living space completely. Bi-fold doors were also installed between the snug and the garden room so they have the option of closing off the space when they need. The Pilkington Activ selfcleaning glass system was used for the living room roof which is a great solution for hard to reach areas – it uses daylight to break down organic dirt and then uses rain to wash the dirt away, it also dries faster leaving the glass clean and with less streaks and the coating lasts as long as the glass does. The bi-fold doors and lantern are manufactured in aluminium – the aluminium of the past is long gone, the products now are sleek and thermally efficient. Hadleigh Glass also replaced the original sash windows in the property with sympathetic double glazed replacements maintaining the aesthetics and character of the house while improving the warmth and comfort of the home. Mr and Mrs Stewart said ‘we are delighted with the garden room and the sash windows, Hadleigh Glass have transformed the living space of the house whilst maintaining the character of the property, we were really happy with the project from start to finish, the installation team were very conscientious and cleared up behind themselves. We would thoroughly recommend Hadleigh Glass’ Hadleigh Glass have showrooms in Ipswich, Hadleigh and Copford near Colchester, they manufacture and install aluminium windows, bi-fold doors and patio doors and supply and install quality UPVC windows doors and conservatories. Are you brave enough to take a dip in the cold North Sea on Christmas morning for your local hospice? Join hundreds of other supporters as they take a dip in the icy water on Christmas morning to raise vital funds for St Elizabeth Hospice. Catherine Sheppard, St Elizabeth Hospice’s events and challenges fundraiser, said: “The Christmas Day Dip is in its 13th year and it’s still such a popular event, with around 400 people lining the beach each Christmas morning ready to take the icy plunge! “There’s always such a great atmosphere at the event, not only with the hundreds of people taking part, but with the thousands who turn out to watch. A lot of people do it in memory of their loved ones who were cared for by the hospice, and all the sponsorship money raised from the event goes towards improving life for local people living with a progressive illness.” You can save £5 if you sign up with the early bird offer before 5pm on 31 October 2016, after this registration will be £10. Be part of the festive fun and sign up now at www.stelizabethhospice.org.uk/dip St Elizabeth Hospice provides vital care and support to more than 2,000 patients and their families every year. It costs millions of pounds a year to run the hospice and they rely on fundraising events, donations and the income generated from its shops to meet the majority of these costs.

Elmsett goes to Bolivia On 2nd August seven intrepid travellers set out for Santa Cruz, Boliva, to visit Operation Restoration, which works to get children off the streets into a more stable life, away from drug addiction and abuse. After a brief rest we were introduced to both the Boys Home, El Camino and the Girls Home, El Alfarero. There were two boys in El Camino visiting from the Reception Home, where they stay for one week after initially coming off the streets. Sadly one boy decided not to stay and ran back to the streets that day, the other left after four days. Most of our time during our ten day visit was spent at El Alfarero, where we got to know the five girls who are living there. Their ages range from 12 to 16 years, and they were very much like any young teenagers, into popular music and sport especially volleyball and basketball. Only two of the girls regularly leave the home to attend the local school. The other three have not been resident in the home for long enough to resist the temptation to leave and return to the streets. Despite the difficulties of verbal communication, our Spanish was limited to saying our names and how old we were, we were able to communicate through games and crafts. We had several very competitive games of volleyball and basketball, made origami boxes, whales and other assorted shapes, and the youngest of the Bolivian girls presented each one of us with a decorated egg, (more on those later!) Some games were simple and spontaneous, clapping chants, skittles with empty water bottles, or trying out different hairstyles. The Bolivian boys challenged us to a football match, which was likely to be a heavy defeat for the “gringos”! However with the score at 4-3 to the “gringos” at half time, our hopes were raised. At full time a 7-7 draw was announced, but no- the Bolivians wanted to continue until someone scored a goal, and the “gringos” pulled it out of the bag, 8-7! The Bolivians were very gracious in defeat, and had probably been merciful to us in play, allowing our players to defend the goal before they took a shot at goal. (Also we did have one Bolivian boy who offered to help us out and play on our side). However the trip was not all about play. We were given the task of repairing and varnishing the climbing frame, courtyard table and benches and mosquito screens. These were all jobs that needed doing but required willing volunteers. These girls had all made a conscious decision to leave their life on the streets. It was quite hard to imagine what lives they had left behind, until we visited the streets of Santa Cruz one evening. A group of about 6 teenagers were sitting around at a busy intersection. Every now and then they would get up and dodge the oncoming traffic to try and wash people’s windscreens whilst they were waiting at the traffic lights. These kids, 5 boys and one girl were clearly high on drugs of one sort or another and were openly sniffing glue from plastic containers as they spoke to us. They looked dishevelled and grubby, one boy particularly was stick thin with a permanently glazed look on his face. These were just the sort of young people that Operation Restoration reaches out to, and the three street workers were doing a fantastic job of getting alongside these young people, finding out about them and trying to help them see that there was the possibility and offer of a better life – one where they could receive an education they had so far been denied, they could have a warm bed and decent food, as well as treatment and support for their addictions. There was no compulsion and the work was done little by little, engaging with those who were possibly receptive to help. The girl we met, probably aged 16 was clearly addicted to her glue, was possibly pregnant and would quite likely receive no antenatal care and possibly give birth to her child on the streets. It was so hard to have to leave her, but the street worker assured us that she

would continue to work with this girl to persuade her to at least receive some sort of healthcare and hopefully consider coming off the streets. This was just one small group of street children, we came across several others as we crossed the city. We certainly learned first-hand what fantastic work is being done by Operation Restoration and how lives can be turned around and potential reached. One of the girls at El Alfarero was soon to graduate from High School and possibly enter university. Previously, if she had survived life on the streets she would possibly have several children by now and no prospect of any education. So our stay in Santa Cruz drew to a close. We all had experienced unconditional love being lived out by the staff at both the homes as well as those who worked with the kids on the street. Our eggs were duly packed in our suitcases, and all made it intact back to Suffolk, ready to be put on display at Elmsett Methodist Church. We relayed the photographic evidence back to the girl who had given them to us, to show how even though we might be 1000’s of miles away, we were all still thinking and praying for her and all the young people and team members of Operation Restoration. How far have Radio Waves travelled from Earth Since last month a Planet has been discovered orbiting the nearest Star to our Sun. Proxima Centauras, a red dwarf that lies just 4.25 light years away. Just how this pans out we must wait. Also this past month a radio signal was picked up from space - scientists got excited, turned out to be a microwave oven ! I kid you not. And just a few weeks ago another signal was detected, Lots of excitement again and the cause was later not found to be aliens but a top secret Russian Military Satellite. It was something the Russians didn't want us to find out, but there you go. The secret things in space would turn your hair white, but that's another story for anther article. But just how far have our radio signals travelled though space? The Earth has an expanding 'bubble' of man-made radio signals expanding outward at the speed of Light and first were sent in the 1890's. In 1900, Reginald Fessenden made the first voice transmission over the airwaves. In 1901 Guglielmo Marconi made the first ever transatlantic radio broadcast. So, that means at 116 Light years away from Earth - the edge of a radio ‘sphere’ which contains many star systems- our very first radio broadcasts are beginning to arrive. At 74 Light years away, television signals are being introduced. A star system 50 Light years away have just heard that England have won the World Cup. But before we get too carried away, it doesn't quite work like that. Its extremely unlikely that aliens would be watching. This is thanks to the inverse square law. In layman's term, its a form of signal degradation. Imagine dropping a stone in the river, the ripples spread out over distance thanks to the exponentially larger area they must encompass. This area can be calculated by multiplying length times width which is why we measure it in square units - square centimetres, square miles etc. This means that the further away from the source, the more square units of area a signal has to travel. Another way of putting it is that the strength of a radio signal will only be 1/4 as great once you are twice the distance from the source. At 10x the distance, the strength of the signal would only be 1/100 as great. So, this means because of this inverse law, all our radio waves become indistinguishable from 'static' noise ( as in when you tune - in a radio ) around a few light years from Earth. An analogy of this would be a alien civilisation only a couple of hundred Light years away, trying to listen to our broadcasts would be like trying to detect the small ripple from a pebble dropped into the pacific ocean off the coast in California - from Japan. But we can amplify the signals to send into space and the irony is, instead of the Earth appearing like a cosmic ‘lighthouse’ in space like we once were, due to the digital age, our signals have declined by over 70% compared to the 1980's - 1990's. On that note, I'll leave you to ponder that. Until next month, clear skies. If you have any questions please email me on neilnorman03@gmail.com

HADLEIGH’S BIGGEST EVER

FIREWORKS DISPLAY FRIDAY 28th OCTOBER AT THE MILLFIELD

Calling All Ukulele Players Plans are afoot to launch a ukulele group for Hadleigh and its surrounding villages. Do you play the ukulele? Are you a beginner, an intermediate player or an expert? Would you like to meet up with other uke players and play together, chat, share ideas and share music, maybe put on a gig or two? Hadleigh Ukulele Group (HUG) will be for uke players and anybody interested in this fun and entertaining instrument. If you think this is a good idea and would like to be part of it, send an email with your name and telephone number to ‘hadleighukulelegroup@gmail.com’. If enough people express an interest you will then be contacted with details of the date, time and place for an open meeting at which ideas can be discussed and plans made to formally launch Hadleigh’s own ukulele group. To receive details of the ukulele group launch meeting send your name and telephone number in an email to hadleighukulelegroup@gmail.com. More information is also on our website - hadleighukulelegroup.onesuffolk.net Some interesting facts about the ukulele: The ukulele, the first of which was made in 1879, is a member of the lute family of instruments and is derived from a stringed instrument that first appeared in Portugal in 139 BC. The ukulele business is booming. In recent years ukulele manufacturers such as Kala have reported growth of 500-600% and around the world in 2015 ukulele sales rose by 1200%. The first man on the moon, Neil Armstrong, was a uke player and when he returned to Earth he spent several weeks in quarantine as scientists at the time feared he may have picked up strange bacteria while in space. He spent much of this time strumming his uke. Other famous players are: Taylor Swift, Pete Townsend, Peter Sellers, Cyndi Lauper, Warren Buffet, George Harrison, Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Madonna, Joni Mitchell and Frank Skinner. There are approx 250 ukulele groups on the UK and if enough people are interested in joining, Hadleigh’s uke group could be number 251. For more information email: hadleighukulelegroup@gmail.com

Armchair Players We brought our own readings to the September meeting. These included a piece written by one of our members about a lovely Victorian cradle as if from the mother, father, designer and even the baby. Another member had written an amusing poem about a tea shop. We are a play reading group that meet at 7.30pm on the second Monday of each month at The George, Hadleigh. New members welcome.

Ruth Finbow During her life, Ruth Finbow has touched a lot of people’s lives. I would like to pay tribute for the help she gave me when I was the manager of Bildeston Boys football team in the late nineties, when she was secretary of Bildeston F.C. She was an inspiration to the teenage boys under my management with her enthusiasm and drive to play her part in making life better for one of the groups she supported, she was always at meetings accompanied by her husband. My son Barry applied to go on working experience with Suffolk Police, but was not successful. Ruth still encouraged him to keep trying, and he listened to her, and now he is an inspector with Essex Police with a doctorate in law, thank you Ruth. You will always be remembered by lots of people, and thanks again. Gordon Atkinson

Hadleigh and District Gardening Club Last month we enjoyed a talk by Matt Long (of Monks Eleigh) who took us through bulb planting for Spring colour. All very timely given it’s that time of year again to, if you have not started already, be thinking about starting the bulb planting process. As I write though, a bit more rain is needed to get them in the ground- I have found that a good quality stainless steel long-handled bulb planting tool is an excellent investment. Matt’s knowledge of the bulb world is impressive and we all learned a great deal about the different varieties on offer, taking note of many keys tips for optimum results, such as the planting depth needed (deep planting for tulips should extend their useful life) and flowering times to prolong the colour show. We also learned that the bulb world is not immune to crime – some rare bulbs can be quite valuable (costing up to £1,000 or more each) and this can attract unwanted interest! Riverside bulbs have a great range on offer and their website is worth a visit as it helpfully provides pictures of the flowering result you should expect to see, together with essential information on flowering times and planting depth. Visit www.riversidebulbs.co.uk or call Matt and his team on 01449 741551. September’s competition was for the largest sunflower, the winner being an American giant variety measuring 30cms in diameter. This month’s photo shows the first three prize winners. Next meeting – Monday October 10th Continuing the planning theme for next year, at our October meeting we will be welcoming Rob Sheriff who is a renowned expert on dahlias. Why not come and join us to find out more about these stunningly colourful plants, and at about this time next year you could then be seeing the results of your new found knowledge! As usual our meeting is at the Hadleigh Town Hall starting at 7.30pm – refreshments included in the £3 entry fee (£1 for members). We hope to see you there. Andy Leeder, Chairman

What a glorious September we are having so far this year, but to be honest, from a gardening point of view we really could do with some rain. The very dry weather has brought an early end to a lot of the veg on the allotment. The runner beans and the climbing French beans are all but finished, some pods will be left on the plants to dry off and make seed for next year. Only save the longest and fattest, you don’t need many. When they have completely dried off use only the best pods. Save the seeds in brown paper envelopes and store them somewhere cool, preferably in a tin box. Beans and peas are the only seed that I save, most other seed is best bought fresh every year. This is particularly true with potatoes as disease such as blight is very easily carried over from year to year. The courgettes are still cropping and are one of the few plants that get a regular watering. A bonus this year has been the sunflowers, with the gladioli more or less finished, the vase in the fireplace is now filled with sunflowers, quite impressive, so next year more will be grown for cutting and any that go over will be left on the plants for the birds to feed on. Next year I am looking to grow more flowers to pick for indoors with one possibility being dahlias. Our speaker at the garden club in October is Rob Sheriff, he is going to talk about dahlias, with luck I can pick up some tips on the best ones to grow on the allotment, it is not a flower I have much experience of. The idea is that they could follow on from the daffodils, gladioli and now sunflowers. I have previously been known to say that if you can’t eat it I don’t grow it but as you get older times and ideas change. Suffolk really is full of wonderful gardens to visit. The latest we have been to is Fullers Mill Garden at West Stow near Bury St Edmunds. This is an enchanting seven acre garden on the banks of the river Lark. The founder Bernard Tickner has spent over fifty years designing and building this very interesting garden. The river Lark runs right through the gardens with a footbridge over it at what was once a lock. Prior to 1900 the river was navigable with over 20 locks and was used to transport mainly coal to Bury St Edmunds from the North Sea, with return loads of corn. Two areas of the garden are called The Quandries, this came about because Bernard and his late wife could not decide on a name for them so they became The Quandries. Even though he is in his nineties he took time to chat to us all, making sure we had a very enjoyable visit, we finished up with tea on the lawn, surrounded by very friendly bantam chickens. The garden is open from April to September on various afternoons. Put it on your list of must visit places. That’s all for this time, Dave

An Auctioneer’s Lot. Trash or treasure, the ability to distinguish one from another and then find a willing buyer for both, that is the skill and challenge. Auctioneer, Ed Crichton, is past master at this having spent many years in the business and now as Fine Art Manager with Lacy, Scott and Knight. Ed’s talk was both informative and entertaining with plenty of humorous anecdotes about his family and the business. This was a perfect introduction to the follow up visit on LSK’s next viewing day at their auction house Ed Crichton in the Auction Room in Bury St Edmunds. Visit to Lacy, Scott and Knight. Two large rooms were prepared for the public to view furniture and items in their ‘general sale’. It was overwhelming to see the volume of knicks knacks, memorabilia, toys and object d’art prepared for the sale the following day. Ed assured his audience that most of the ‘job lots’ would be bought and taken away by the end of the sale. He had selected several items of particular interest to compare their quality and possible value. It was not always obvious as, like everything else, the trade also has fashions and trends. A fascinating place to visit and many members vowed to return as bidders and or buyers. The Gentle Ramblers. Walkers thoroughly enjoyed their ramble in fine walking weather along the footpaths in the Manningtree/Mistley area. An unexpected bonus was a refreshing cuppa at the Mistley Tea House with its wonderful views over the River Stour. Our thanks to Sue Hughes and Kathy Carr for masterminding the morning. Wingfield College Guided Tour. The visit started in the impressive surroundings of Wingfield Church. It was here that tour guide, Peter Bloore, gave the large group-a lively explanation of the influential families connected to the Church and the College next door. As Peter lives at Wingfield College with his partner Jane and their three children, members had the privilege of viewing most of the their unique home with him. From Peter Bloore in Wingfield Church the artificial Georgian facade to the genuine 14th century wooden bedroom floor the visitors saw them all. Only the blonde haired resident ghost failed to appear. After such a wealth of living history, the group were happy to relax in their shady garden with a cup of tea and some of Jane’s delicious homemade cakes. JD

What a swell party this is Well, we have some helpers, the venue and some sponsorship (although more volunteers/donations would be gratefully received) so now all we need are guests. You may live away from family, you may have a carer - feel free to bring them. Whatever the reason we would love to see you. The event is free but we need prior notification so we can cater for you. Please contact us on 01473 829246 or hadleighsimon@gmail.com. Donations should be made out to The Christmas Present Trust and can be paid in directly to the Ipswich Building Society. In November's magazine we will be announcing details of an exciting Celebrity Auction to raise money for the event. Watch this space! Sarah and Simon Thompson

Suffolk’s Alice Barlow has won the England Girls’ County Champion of Champions title – and come fifth in the equivalent final of the national women’s championship. The brilliant day for the 17-year-old from Newton Green was completed on Sunday when she shot a four over par 76 on the Bracken course at national headquarters Woodhall Spa. The 18-hole event is new on the England Golf competition calendar, with players that have lifted county junior and adult titles competing together. Barlow currently holds both titles in Suffolk, which allowed her to qualify for both events. In the junior championship, her performance, consisting of two halves of 38, put her one shot ahead of Clare Howard, of Borington, Devon, and Amy Boote, of Tadmartin, Oxfordshire. Barlow, who currently plays off two, was three shots off matching the score which won the full women’s champions title. Early in her round, Barlow miraculously managed a three on the short fifth. Her tee shot ended in a ditch, and she had to play off a slope with one foot in water. She chipped to two feet of the hole and commented: “After that I knew it was going a good day.” Women’s winner was Lancashire champion Catherine Roberts, of Pleasington Golf Club, who shot a one over par 73, with halves of 39 and 34. Barlow looked like pushing to gain a higher finish in the main event, but bogeys on the last two holes kept her out of the top four.

Orchard Barn Environmental Education is about to celebrate its 9th birthday. Not only is this a cause of celebration (we’ve got that covered, see http://www.orchardbarn.org.uk/birthdaycelebration.html ) but also a chance to look back at achievements. In the early days the Barn was a neglected wreck, a decaying frame with a shallow tin roof. The timber frame was repaired, the roof timbers restored to their original pitch and covered with 20,000 hand crafted oak shingles. The tool shed and volunteer rest room have been added, both using traditional materials and building techniques. Thanks to Lottery funding there is now a disabled parking area and boardwalk to the loos. The large pond has been dredged and many ‘goodies’ raised from its depths. The garden, once a mass of nettles, is now producing vegetables from several Hugelkultur beds. It is watered using rainwater harvested from the roof of the barn. Fruit trees in the orchard have been pruned and more planted. But it’s not only the site that has developed, many volunteers and students on courses have developed new skills and links have been made to other organisations, not least of which is the 200 acre wood near Hadleigh where most of the building timber is grown. Want to get involved? Tuesday is gardening, Wednesday site maintenance, Thursday green woodworking and we’re planning monthly Saturday sessions for gardening and site maintenance. Raising Money in a difficult economic Climate Sudbury Choral Society was founded in 1947. As well as performing large scale choral works our programmes feature a wide variety of music from Bach to the Beatles. There are no auditions, but an ability to read music is naturally an advantage. It is a very friendly group of about 70 members of varying ages and abilities who share a love of singing. The choir give four concerts a year frequently with an orchestra and professional soloists in St Peter’s Sudbury. Each member of the choir pays £100 a year to cover some of the costs of running the choir which involves hiring music, paying the conductor and accompanist not to mention the cost of paying solo singers and instrumentalists to play in an orchestra to accompany the choir for some of our concerts. It usually costs about £4,000 to pay these extra musicians and the choir does this twice a year! In order to keep down the cost of membership for our members, many of whom are retired and to keep the costs of our concerts down to a reasonable £10 for adults (free for children) we raise money in any legal way we can. This includes running a small choir (Choir 4 Hire) which sings at weddings, funerals and other parties and last year we hosted a very successful French Horn Concert. This year we are issuing a challenge to other local groups by running a General Knowledge Quiz The Sudbury Choral Society’s Quiz Team Challenge When: Saturday 15th October at 7:30 pm Where: St Peter’s Church, Market Hill, Sudbury Why: To win the Sudbury Quiz Team Challenge Cup Teams: Maximum of 8 people Cost: £5 a head You can bring your own picnic and drinks for the interval or alternatively “The C Codfather” will deliver Fish and Chips to the event for you. Stoke by Nayland Norman Plum Trophy winners 2016-09-12 Team and caddies with Club Captain Ian Thompson Stoke by Nayland’s men golfers have done the seemingly impossible by winning the Essex Golf Union Norman Plum Trophy for a second consecutive year. They travelled to play the Final, on Sunday 11th September, against Theydon Bois Golf Club on a neutral course, Bentley Golf Club. On a perfect early autumn day the two clubs lined up with six pairs of players in each team. The format was better ball match play. First to tee off for Stoke by Nayland were Dean Brace and Shaun Underwood who were two holes up after four holes but they were pegged back at the half way stage. Ian Benson and Trevor Brace were proving to be too strong for their Theydon Bois opponents and were three holes up at the turn. The same was true of the third pair out, Chris Williamson and Byron Long, also three up. It was looking good for Stoke by Nayland when Gary Thompson and Luke Bennett were also leading. But Theydon Bois had a foothold in the fifth match and were four holes ahead of Dan Goddard and Steve Evans. There was a close match at the end of the field when Trevor Warren and Alan White reported that they were all square at the ninth hole. Captain John Sandford was looking less relaxed at the 16th hole when his number one pair went one down. He brightened when groups two and three both won and Stoke were two points ahead. Although Dan Goddard and Steve Evans fought back they were beaten on the 16th hole. Two points to one to Stoke. Then there was good news filtering back from the eighteenth hole. Dean Brace and Shaun Underwood had won the hole to finish the match with a vital half point. But it was with some relief that the Stoke supporters saw Trevor Warren and Alan White walking down the 16th fairway with a 4 and 3 victory under their belts. They had put together a four hole winning streak to make the match theirs. Stoke had retained the Norman Plum Trophy and the icing on the cake was a half point from group four to leave the final score 4-2. Stoke by Nayland were presented with the trophy by the President elect of the Essex Golf Union with warm words about the spirit in which the final had been played. John Sandford, in reply, thanked his squad and caddies for their support in this campaign to retain the Norman Plum Trophy.

Harvey Watts wins Suffolk Junior Match Play Newton Green’s Harvey Watts has won the Suffolk Junior match play championship after a close battle with county junior stroke-play champion Sam Byford. In the final at Waldringfield, Watts scored a 2 & 1 win over his Ipswich opponent, having defeated Tom Auchterlonie, of Woodbridge, by 5 & 4 in the semi-final. Watts, 16, received the trophy from Suffolk Golf Union president Phil Platten. Byford had progressed to the final by beating Newton’s Ben Tatum in the other semi-final. Watts showed he enjoys the Waldringfield Phil Platten & Harvey Watts course, having earlier in the summer gone to the same venue to retain the host club’s junior title. He was in the Newton team, along with Tatum and Alice Barlow, who recently finished seventh in the national club junior team championship in Oxfordshire, and also plays regular Stenson and Hambro golf for his club.

Bildeston Carpet Bowls Club On the 30th of August the club played their final match of the summer league. For the second year running the club won group E this year by 14 points. The competition consists of 5 groups of 7 or 8 teams based on geographic area. Group E comprised teams from Hitcham, Hadleigh, Whatfield, Offton, Elmsett and Somersham. The winners of each group then play in the finals at Needham Market. The evening is hotly contested with many of the players being members of the Suffolk county team. The overall winners were Barking, with Bildeston finishing 4th. This was very pleasant evening for all those taking part, and another trophy for the clubs cabinet. The club is now starting the winter league, due to the withdrawal of some clubs we will be playing in a new single west league. This will involve some extra travelling to teams in Hundon, Barrow, Stanningfield, Hoggards Green and Brockley amongst the new opposition. The club is always interested to see anybody who may like to give carpet bowls a try. Full details of the club and the fixture list is on the Bildeston web site
