Running from 21 September to 2 November, Beat the Street is transforming Sudbury and Great Cornard into a giant playground. On lampposts across the area are special ‘Beat Boxes’. Players are encouraged to pick up a Beat the Street card at their nearest GP surgery, leisure centre or library and tap the Beat Boxes as they walk, run or cycle through Sudbury and Great Cornard – collecting points for how far they travel. Adult players must collect and register a Beat the Street card and join a team before tapping at least two of these Beat Boxes in an hour to score points. Schoolchildren have received special fobs which have already been registered to their school. Schools, community groups and businesses have also competing to win prizes of up to £500 worth of sports and fitness equipment. Taking place during Suffolk’s Year of Walking, Beat the Street is designed to inspire whole communities to get moving. Tens of thousands of people have already taken part in Beat the Street in other towns and cities across the UK. As part of Beat the Street, a series of walks with Babergh District Council will be running from Wednesday 28 September to Monday 31 October. Not only will the walks give local residents an opportunity to explore their local area but there will be a chance to score bonus points in the competition and goodies available for those who take part. Visit http://seeanddosudbury.co.uk/whats-on/ to find out more about what walks are coming up. There is still time to get involved – pick up a card from your GP surgery, leisure centre or library and start tapping! Want to get involved in Beat the Street? Raising Money in a difficult economic Climate Sudbury Choral Society was founded in 1947. As well as performing large scale choral works our programmes feature a wide variety of music from Bach to the Beatles. There are no auditions, but an ability to read music is naturally an advantage. It is a very friendly group of about 70 members of varying ages and abilities who share a love of singing. The choir give four concerts a year frequently with an orchestra and professional soloists in St Peter’s Sudbury. Each member of the choir pays £100 a year to cover some of the costs of running the choir which involves hiring music, paying the conductor and accompanist not to mention the cost of paying solo singers and instrumentalists to play in an orchestra to accompany the choir for some of our concerts. It usually costs about £4,000 to pay these extra musicians and the choir does this twice a year! In order to keep down the cost of membership for our members, many of whom are retired and to keep the costs of our concerts down to a reasonable £10 for adults (free for children) we raise money in any legal way we can. This includes running a small choir (Choir 4 Hire) which sings at weddings, funerals and other parties and last year we hosted a very successful French Horn Concert. This year we are issuing a challenge to other local groups by running a General Knowledge Quiz The Sudbury Choral Society’s Quiz Team Challenge When: Saturday 15th October at 7:30 pm Where: St Peter’s Church, Market Hill, Sudbury Why: To win the Sudbury Quiz Team Challenge Cup Teams: Maximum of 8 people Cost: £5 a head You can bring your own picnic and drinks for the interval or alternatively “The Codfather” will deliver Fish and Chips to the event for you. (Order on the day) To take part please e-mail garethcole@btopenworld.com to register your Team’s name and the number of members in your team. (Pay at the door) www.sudburychoralsociety.co.uk

It seems Rainy Days are here to stay With 4 of the 5 wettest years on record happening since the year 2000 it seems that rainy days are here to stay. Gutters and downpipes that do not have the sufficient capacity to remove rainwater are liable to overflow and in older properties this can lead to water entering the fabric of the building. Deep flow guttering increases the capacity of the guttering on your property by up to 100% reducing the need for additional down pipes and preventing overflowing gutters. Hadleigh based Deep Flow Gutter Systems are able to supply and fit a range colours and finishes including cast iron and PVC sourced from market leading suppliers including Heritage Cast Iron Rainwater and Deepflow Systems. Another common problem with a property’s guttering is blockages. Over a period of time a collection of leaves and moss etc can build up, reducing the gutters ability to remove rainwater to the downpipes. Using a state of the art 10 metre reach Vac system, complete with inspection camera, Deep Flow Gutter Systems are able to fully clean your gutters from the safety of the ground without the need for ladders, scaffolding or articulated boom lift equipment. Contact Deep Flow Systems on 01473 879448 or 07970 828559 deepflowguttering@hotmail.co.uk

Back to school scheme launched to educate children on eye health A Sudbury opticians has launched an innovative ‘back to school scheme’ aimed at educating children on the importance of eye health. As a responsible healthcare practitioner Wardale Williams in Sudbury has an ongoing campaign to raise the public profile of the importance of eye health. The company has now decided to target children with the launch of the new initiative to tie in with the beginning of the school year. Each child which comes into the Sudbury practice we now be handed packs, which aim to educate children Five-year-old Ollie Jones with his about the eyes through fun activities education pack such as word searches, crosswords, cartoon information sheets and drawing. All children handed a pack will be encouraged to enter a competition. Children aged up to nine will be asked to design their own pair of glasses in a bid to win a bumper arts and crafts set or a pair of sunglasses. Children over nine will be handed a quiz sheet with the chance to win a pair of sunglasses. The winners will be named at the end of September. Five-year-old Ollie Jones was the first youngster to be given an activity pack. His mother Becky Jones, said: “What a fantastic idea, Ollie loved the pack and completed the word search and started designing his glasses straight away. It is great to give the children something so educational which can keep them busy while waiting and they can also take home.” Practice manager Amanda Skinner, said: “For some time now we have been focussing on raising the importance of eye health amongst our customers and the local community. We decided to target children on this occasion as we feel it is important to educate people as early as possible so they can adopt good habits to help them avoid difficulties later on in life. We have decided to launch this initiative now to tie in with the children’s return to school. We are looking forward to seeing what designs the children come up with.” Anyone wanting to find out more about the ‘back to school’ initiative can simply pop into the practice in Gainsborough Street or telephone 01787 372492.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk I know that the issue of speeding on our local roads matters a great deal to many communities in South Suffolk. We have recently had what I know will feel like ‘yet another’ tragic road traffic accident on the A134 near Sudbury. Of course, each incident has its unique circumstances and our first thoughts must be with the family of the victim; we should not jump to conclusions but await the investigative process. However, what we can be certain about is that this was not the first fatal accident on the South Suffolk stretch of the A134 in recent months and my constituents will be rightly concerned. That said, the A134 is not unique and I have stretches of road across the constituency where residents are worried about speeding, and then there are the junctions of the A12 around East Bergholt which I have previously raised with the Highways Agency. Most commonly, constituents will request amended speed limits for specific stretches of road. The good news is that Suffolk County Council already has plans for speed restrictions on the A134 with new 40mph limits in place from Nayland to Honey Tye and Newton to Sudbury garden centre. Speeding is a particular concern for vulnerable road users, especially those on two wheels or four legs. With growing enthusiasm for cycling nationwide – a passion I share – there has been an increasing focus in recent years on the danger to cyclists on our roads. However, far less attention has been paid to equestrian safety and I recently had the pleasure to visit a group of campaigners in Hadleigh who are part of the national horse riding initiative ‘Pass Wide and Slow’. The campaigners explained that they have had problems with drivers speeding up to horse riders and causing injury to either the animal or rider by scaring the horse. So, a part of this is raising awareness, in the manner of the well-publicised ‘think bike’ campaign. We may also need stronger laws around aspects of reckless driving. We certainly want to keep pressing on with a local focus on specific traffic trouble-spots.

Sudbury Community First Responders Scheme On 13th August the local Community First Responder group (NZ508) held an awareness event and bucket collection outside Sudbury Town Hall. We were delighted with the amount of interest and support from our community and enjoyed showing people how simple techniques can actually help save lives. We also raised £328.02 which will be used to further develop our group in support of our community in Sudbury and the surrounding area. Thank you all for your positive and encouraging attitude to our efforts.

Volunteer plea for dementia charity scheme in the Sudbury area For top quality printing, friendly advice and quotations on any printed item

PRINTING

Volunteers in the Sudbury area who can spare some time to befriend someone living with dementia are being sought by Alzheimer’s Society. It follows the success of the Side by Side scheme, which has become so popular that there are not enough volunteers for the number of people registering for the scheme – especially around Sudbury. Patrick Yardy, manager of Side by Side said: “This service focuses on enabling people with dementia to lead more fulfilling lives and to continue to take part in the activities that they have always enjoyed - and to try new ones. If you are passionate about improving people’s quality of life, becoming a Side by Side volunteer could be for you. By doing things like going for a walk, or to a football match or just having a chat over a cuppa, you can support people with dementia to take up hobbies and get out and about.” The number of volunteering hours can be tailored to suit your availability. Training is provided and expenses covered. For more information contact Jon on 01473 237 301 or email suffolk@alzheimers.org.uk

Sudbury Rotary Club was delighted to be awarded the District Gold Award for our Nature and Environment programme earlier this year. This ambitious project has grown and evolved over recent months into an interesting and exciting initiative designed to encourage children in local schools to learn more about the natural environment. The concept grew out of our realization that many children, although living in a town surrounded by beautiful habitat, have little or no appreciation of the countryside or of the important role that they can play, both now and in the future. We have been so encouraged to see the children enjoying learning about river life; the importance of biodiversity on the Sudbury Commonlands; our wildlife and realizing how essential it is to take care of all this for future generations. Over the past few months we have seen over 300 children attend some element of the programme, with an excellent attendance by one school in particular - Wells Hall School, Great Cornard. Teaching the children to appreciate the importance of our environment will, we hope, engender in them a passion for its future and, who knows, maybe one or two will be inspired to make it their profession! More recently we have been helping the Sudbury Community Kitchen, who provide free nourishing lunches each Monday open to all whether in need of company, a healthy lunch or just a cheerful welcome. To cover a period when Sainsburys were unable to help, local Rotary members stepped into the breach, bringing along supplies each week to enable the Community Kitchen to provide this vital support. Again looking further afield, Rotary International has come to the aid of the survivors of the recent earthquakes in central Italy by providing Shelterboxes – as the name implies these provide emergency shelter as well as vital tools to help cope with the disaster. Rotary keeps a supply of these in stock for use in disasters such as this and Sudbury Club has agreed to donate funds to replace one of these Shelterboxes, ready for future use. In addition to helping people in need locally, Sudbury Rotary Club has regularly offered help to people in need overseas. For the last three years we have supported the Home of Hope, a refuge for Lebanese and Syrian street children in Beirut. This year we have agreed to support the East Meru Community School in Tanzania by providing funds which equate to sponsoring a child at the school; we hope to supplement this with other offers of help in the future and we are also exploring possible links through Rotary clubs in South Africa and Mali. Back home again, Rotary has for a number of years offered a Rotary Youth Leadership Programme and we have been pleased to sponsor a local candidate, Charlie Newcombe; shortly he will be addressing the club to tell us what he has learnt following a week-long course at Grafham Water. Other forthcoming talks at our Monday lunches include Neil Devlin on “Magic and the Human Mind”, Mr George Yardy a consultant urological surgeon at Ipswich Hospital and Julie Thompson who will describe her 2016 Oral History project in Long Melford. Watch out next Spring for purple crocuses! Over the coming weeks we are hoping to plant crocuses in public places and at local schools to raise awareness of Rotary’s on-going campaign to eradicate polio. We are currently busy planning events leading up to Christmas, including the Schools Concert on 5th December followed by the Christmas Tree Festival in St Peters and of course Santa, whose grotto will make its first appearance at the Christmas Lights Switch-on on Market Hill on 25th November and then in the Library between 10th and 21st December – watch out in the press for further details. We meet every Monday at the Mill Hotel at 12.30pm, for lunch and a chance to socialise. As well as our lunchtime meetings, we hold both fund-raising and fun events (often the same thing!) throughout the year. If you would like more information contact our secretary Roger Green on 07341 290415 or look us up on our website. www.rotary-ribi.org/clubs/homepage.php?ClubID=503 or Google Sudbury Rotary Club Rotarian Tony Platt

Sudbury technician among first batch of apprentices to graduate from innovative scheme A young apprentice from Sudbury is celebrating after becoming one of just eight people in the UK to graduate from a special training scheme. Chris Golding, 19, an apprentice at Barrett Lee Garage is among the first batch to graduate from the three-year Bosch automotive apprentice scheme. Barrett Lee is part of the Bosch Car Service network and the apprenticeship scheme was launched to coincide with the 100-year milestone of Robert Bosch, Bosch’s founder, taking on his first apprentice. The course offers young technicians the opportunity to learn industry specific skills, including being trained on Bosch equipment, the leading name in the sector. The scheme allows the apprentices to benefit from both practical and theoretical training while earning a living, providing a good balance of on-the-job experience and technical training. “I have gained lots of skills and knowledge over the past three years and I am very pleased with what I have achieved. To be trained by experts from a company as prestigious as Bosch is a great honour to be among the first eight people to graduate from this course makes me extremely proud. I am confident that what I have learned from this course will set my on the path to a successful career,” said Mr Golding. Alex Gibson, Apprentice Trainer/Assessor at Bosch said: “We are incredibly proud of our apprentices and how much they have learned and improved over the past three years. It is sad to see them move on but we know they will carry their knowledge with them as they continue in their careers.” Barrett Lee is a market leader in specialised services for makes such as BMW, Mercedes, Jaguar, Audi and Land Rover and is based at Byford Road on the Chilton Industrial Estate. Company director Michael Holt said: “We are delighted for Chris following his graduation from the Bosch scheme and he deserves much credit for all his hard work. To be trained by Bosch experts means Chris has had access to the very best knowledge in this sector.”

Opticians collect spectacles for the underprivileged Under privileged people in Africa, India and Eastern Europe will have a brighter vision of the future thanks to the efforts of an optical group in three market towns. Wardale Williams, which has practices in Sudbury, Haverhill and Halstead, will be offering customers significant discounts throughout September and November in return for their old glasses. The spectacles will then be sent overseas to aid people with their sight. Amanda Skinner Practice Manager at Sudbury, said: “We have been offering these trade-in deals for several years now and are proud of our commitment to this cause. The spectacles will be helping under privileged people overseas who simply do not have access to health and eye care which many of us have come to take for granted in this country. Most of the glasses returned are of a very high quality so they will really make a difference to the lives of so many people. “All customers need to do to claim a discount is to return their old spectacles to us.” The collected glasses will be handed to the charity Lions International, which will distribute the spectacles overseas. Lions Clubs in the UK and the US have been supporting eyecare projects home and abroad since the 1970s.

Add meaning to your menu for Marie Curie - Get together to host a dinner party with a difference Dinner parties are a great way to share memorable moments with friends and family, and Marie Curie is calling on food fans in Suffolk to host a dinner party with a difference this October. The charity wants you to host a ‘Dinner Down Memory Lane’, and instead of asking guests to bring a bottle or a dessert, ask for a donation instead. In doing so, you will help support Marie Curie Nurses care for people living with a terminal illness, helping them spend quality time with their loved ones. Angela Bussey, Community Fundraiser for Marie Curie Suffolk, said, “We all love getting together with friends and family, having fun and creating new memories - Dinner Down Memory Lane is all about doing just that. It’s the perfect excuse to share good times with your loved ones and, by inviting your guests to make a donation, you’ll be supporting Marie Curie Nurses at the same time.” So dig out a family favourite or create a modern masterpiece - anything goes – just be the host with the most by creating a meal to remember this October in aid of Marie Curie. Sudbury Mayor’s Report Another quite busy month, I really value the opportunity to meet so many dedicated volunteers. I was invited to attend The Sophie Bavington Young Volunteer of the Year Awards held by The Befriending Scheme. These awards are presented to young volunteers aged between 16 and 24 who give their friendship and support to vulnerable members of our society. Week in week out these volunteers support adults with learning difficulties, mental health problems and the elderly. The award is named after Sophie Bavington, a former young volunteer with The Befriending Scheme. Sadly Sophie passed away when she was only 23. The efforts of the young nominees reflect the dedication and excellent work that Sophie did as a volunteer. The winner was selected by her parents Carmel and Tony. The eight volunteers had been nominated by co-ordinators from Sudbury, Ipswich and Bury-St-Edmunds. It must have been a really difficult decision as all the candidates were brilliant. The winner was Charlotte Willer who had all the qualities that a great volunteer should have- patience, kindness, listening skills and a huge amount of compassion. A huge thank you, to Shirley Moore, Will Ginno and the staff, who ,through their hard work make a tremendous difference to the lives of those who need our support. I had a surprise invitation from the Lord Mayor of London to have tea at The Mansion House to commemorate the 350 years since The Great Fire of London. The people of Sudbury had donated £248 pounds six shillings and six pence. It has been estimated the equivalent today would be between £80,000 and £100,000. Sudbury was given a special mention as we gave the third highest amount. All the Mayors from the towns and cities who had contributed were invited. I have never been in the company of so many mayors in one place. Fifteen counties had contributed. Devon had sent the most £1,480.6s. Suffolk had sent £783,13s. The actual book in which all the donations were recorded was available although safely under glass. A fantastic afternoon, I was so proud to represent the people of Sudbury. On Tuesday the 13th there was another celebration of achievements. Throughout the summer holidays a competition to encourage children to read at least six books. The Librarians and volunteer listeners have yet again put a tremendous amount of time and effort into this valuable work. Many of the children had dressed up in costumes from their favourite characters from the Roald Dahl books ,as had some of the staff. We even had a Miss Trunchbull from “Matilda”. Children need to be encouraged to read especially now with all the many distractions that they have access to. So a big well done to all the children to took part, and the parents and grandparents for encouraging them. I still love reading books written for children. My favourite book by Roald Dahl is “Revolting Rhymes” his poems always make me laugh. Finally I had a really interesting morning at the West Suffolk College in Cornard Road, my first task was to try a variety of cakes and find the winner, it was difficult as they were all delicious. The coffee morning was to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support and to give people an idea of all the courses that are available, from learning another language to gaining extra qualifications. I sat in on the Creative Writing Session which is something that I will certainly take up when I have more time. They have something for everyone. If you love the outdoors but also like your home comforts, glamping is the perfect holiday for you. It’s camping without the hard work, without having to lug your own kitchen sink or sleeping bag around with you! Upbeat Heart Support – Looking After The Hearts Of Suffolk We are pleased to say we have settled into our new home at Long Melford Old School after moving from Sudbury at the beginning of September. We were delighted that the Upbeat Contemporary Choir arranged a concert in the Lavenham Village Hall on our behalf. Upbeat Choir supporting Upbeat Heart! Great stuff! This was a sell out, magnificent singing from 54 members, and they raised the huge sum of £1900 for us. We are lucky indeed to have the support of this local group. Andrea King, leader of the Choir came to Upbeat to present us with the cheque. This is a very lively group and if you need further information about the Choir please email: a.king00@btinternet.com Upbeat Heart Support in West Suffolk is a self financing charity and provides rehabilitation exercise classes for patients with heart and related illnesses. Lavenham’s First Children’s Book Festival 28 and 29 October 2016 The popular Lavenham Literary Festival is branching out this year with its first book festival for younger readers. An impressive line-up of authors, storytellers, illustrators and cartoonists will provide a mixture of fun sessions involving popular children’s authors and smaller workshops where children can try their creative skills in writing, drawing and illustrating. Headlining the festival is the Children’s Laureate, Chris Riddell, with his popular session ‘Ask the Laureate’. On his appointment to the post, Chris proclaimed his intention to show everyone how much fun you can have with a pencil and he will therefore be live drawing the answers to your questions! Chris will pick his favourite questions to illustrate, giving an insight into the laureate world. The lucky questioners he picks can take their doodle-answers home with them, a unique piece of art from one of our greatest illustrators. Full details, including booking can be found at www.lavenhamliteraryfestival.co.uk

Fed up with hard water and lime scale? Fitting a water softener will save you money and time East Anglia has some of the hardest water in Great Britain. The scale build up on shower screens and taps, that ring of scum in the basin, and limescale in kettles are some of the visible consequences of hard water. We have to resort to using large amounts of washing powder, conditioner, extra salts in the dish washer and expensive bathroom cleaning products to overcome the dreaded scale. In my professional capacity I’ve replaced countless appliances that should have had a longer service life. Scale blocks water ways in boilers and hot water pipes. Heating elements in hot water cylinders and electric showers get encrusted and fail. All these problems can be solved by fitting an ion exchange water softener. Laundered clothes will feel softer, after showering your skin will feel smoother, you’ll use far less detergents and the adverse effects on your plumbing system will start to reverse. If you would like to know more, give me a call. I’m happy to show you a simple 15 minute demonstration and provide an installation survey. A typical installation can be done in one day. Peter Thorogood... “M.P.’s and nappies have one thing in common; they should be changed regularly, and for the same reason” So there is a God. Not since the days of the blessed Cromwell have we, the people of Britain, been given such a wondrous opportunity to cleanse the Reptile House and adjacent privileged home for the senile toadies. Apparently both Houses of Westminster have to be closed for no inconsiderable time for a massive refurbishment project. Asbestosis (usually a danger faced by those who have actively toiled for a living) could be prevalent, the stonework is unsafe and the place riddled with vermin (well we knew that anyway!) The cost, approaching some £4 billion could be worth it, but only if they promised never to return. Stick the lot of them on gardening leave (a term much prevalent in the equally corrupt financial sector). Pay them a sinecure to do nothing, preferably in Norfolk where we can keep a watching brief on them. But whatever, do not let them take up any gainful employment. We have observed what they can do to the country, let alone private enterprise. Money could be saved by gifting Barry and Pugin’s beautiful Gothic masterpiece to a hotel chain that could finance the improvements and eventually help to reduce the national debt. Eventually the Parliamentarians, like the dinosaur, will die out (their ermine clad acolytes hopefully sooner) and, like the more productive Hobbit, will become a thing of folk law. So who will govern us, I hear you ask. Well, we certainly do not need 650 MP’s and some 850 Lords, few of whom are qualified to run a tea kiosk. Party hacks to a man and women, completely lacking in wisdom or independent thought. Now we are leaving the EU our misnamed civil servants, neither civil nor servile, will have time enough to assist in legislation under the auspices of say one Senator (or whatever) representing every county in the UK. They would be elected by us on non-party lines by a simple majority vote. Once ensconced in decent accommodation somewhere in the midlands and paid the average national wage with good accommodation, if required, they would serve a four year term and elect, from their midst, a suitably qualified member as Prime Minister. Simple, some 109 legislators instead of 1500, great cost saving, no party politics. Maybe those forcibly retired MP’s and Lords could become somewhat of a tourist attraction. They could be suitably uniformed and allowed out of their home, like Chelsea pensioners, to wander and inhabit the hostelries for the amusement of local and tourists alike. Now of course to more serious matters. Our sleepy town of Sudbury is now involved in some strife. Certain Babergh councillors have proposed a scheme to move our bus park to Girling Street opposed by a civic group “Save Our Bus Park” or S.O.B.S. who has, in a very short period, collected a petition of over 5,000, yes 5,000, signatures against. Therefore S.O.B.S. called a public meeting at St. Peter’s Church on Monday 12th September, which I was invited to Chair. Despite virtually no advance publicity from the local press at least 230 plus townspeople turned up, the great majority against the move. Councillors Simon Barrett and David Holland, the driving force behind the move, were invited to attend and manfully gave their reasoning behind the scheme. S.O.B.S. then gave their valid reasons for opposing. It was obviously an emotionally charged evening with many pertinent comments and arguments from the floor. However, the rather besieged councillors were shown every courtesy and argued every point in an open manner, but in the words of Lord Andrew Phillips, the greatest petition in Sudbury’s history must not be ignored. Chairman of Planning for both Babergh and Sudbury, Councillor Peter Beer, took the floor and promised open and honest consultation before any final decision is made. But that is the problem. First the scheme, the brainchild of Babergh Council, has to go before that very council for planning approval. On that committee sits but a maximum of four Councillors representing our town. It then goes before Suffolk C.C. for final approval, on which but two councillors out of seventy five represent Sudbury. Councillor Nigel Bennett, from the floor, asked could not those very meetings be held in Sudbury itself, so the electorate may voice their opinions and democratic governance seen to be done. The final decision will be made by but two local councillors, the remainder from the boondocks of Halesworth, Shotley or wherever, with absolutely no affinity to Sudbury. It is akin to a Gilbert and Sullivan Operetta, this matter is of such historic import it should be decided by our own townspeople under the auspices of our own duly elected town council. The loss of Borough status and the imposition of Babergh have proved to be an unqualified and undemocratic disaster. Off for a beer and bar room wisdom! Suffolk’s Alice Barlow has won the England Girls’ County Champion of Champions title – and come fifth in the equivalent final of the national women’s championship. The brilliant day for the 17-year-old from Newton Green was completed on Sunday when she shot a four over par 76 on the Bracken course at national headquarters Woodhall Spa. The 18-hole event is new on the England Golf competition calendar, with players that have lifted county junior and adult titles competing together. Barlow currently holds both titles in Suffolk, which allowed her to qualify for both events. In the junior championship, her performance, consisting of two halves of 38, put her one shot ahead of Clare Howard, of Borington, Devon, and Amy Boote, of Tadmartin, Oxfordshire. Barlow, who currently plays off two, was three shots off matching the score which won the full women’s champions title. Early in her round, Barlow miraculously managed a three on the short fifth. Her tee shot ended in a ditch, and she had to play off a slope with one foot in water. She chipped to two feet of the hole and commented: “After that I knew it was going a good day.” Women’s winner was Lancashire champion Catherine Roberts, of Pleasington Golf Club, who shot a one over par 73, with halves of 39 and 34. Barlow looked like pushing to gain a higher finish in the main event, but bogeys on the last two holes kept her out of the top four.

Stoke by Nayland successfully defend title SERVICE

Stoke by Nayland Norman Plum Trophy winners 2016-09-12 Team and caddies with Club Captain Ian Thompson Stoke by Nayland’s men golfers have done the seemingly impossible by winning the Essex Golf Union Norman Plum Trophy for a second consecutive year. They travelled to play the Final, on Sunday 11th September, against Theydon Bois Golf Club on a neutral course, Bentley Golf Club. On a perfect early autumn day the two clubs lined up with six pairs of players in each team. The format was better ball match play. First to tee off for Stoke by Nayland were Dean Brace and Shaun Underwood who were two holes up after four holes but they were pegged back at the half way stage. Ian Benson and Trevor Brace were proving to be too strong for their Theydon Bois opponents and were three holes up at the turn. The same was true of the third pair out, Chris Williamson and Byron Long, also three up. It was looking good for Stoke by Nayland when Gary Thompson and Luke Bennett were also leading. But Theydon Bois had a foothold in the fifth match and were four holes ahead of Dan Goddard and Steve Evans. There was a close match at the end of the field when Trevor Warren and Alan White reported that they were all square at the ninth hole. Captain John Sandford was looking less relaxed at the 16th hole when his number one pair went one down. He brightened when groups two and three both won and Stoke were two points ahead. Although Dan Goddard and Steve Evans fought back they were beaten on the 16th hole. Two points to one to Stoke. Then there was good news filtering back from the eighteenth hole. Dean Brace and Shaun Underwood had won the hole to finish the match with a vital half point. But it was with some relief that the Stoke supporters saw Trevor Warren and Alan White walking down the 16th fairway with a 4 and 3 victory under their belts. They had put together a four hole winning streak to make the match theirs. Stoke had retained the Norman Plum Trophy and the icing on the cake was a half point from group four to leave the final score 4-2. Stoke by Nayland were presented with the trophy by the President elect of the Essex Golf Union with warm words about the spirit in which the final had been played. John Sandford, in reply, thanked his squad and caddies for their support in this campaign to retain the Norman Plum Trophy.
