Brother and Sister Exhibit for Ipswich Maritime Celebrations Brother and sister Richard and Debbie Wendt will be collaborating for the first time in a joint art exhibition to celebrate the maritime festival in Ipswich Town Hall in August. Entitled ‘Wendt on Water’ it will be showing in the tea room in July and August , so this is an ideal opportunity to see their work in a historic town centre setting, whilst relaxing with a tea or coffee. Both were brought up in Sudbury, moving to Ipswich 8 and 6 years ago respectively, and have used their artistic skills to portray areas of beauty, working on the theme of Ipswich Marina, with their own individual interpretations, Debbie using oil paint on canvas and Richard with his graphic illustrations. Debbie has had a few breaks in her career as a selling artist, but since coming back to painting, she has discovered that painting large scale has given her a sense of freedom of expression in her brushwork and use of bold colours and has developed a few affective styles like the Impressionist ‘drip’ style of ‘New Ipswich Marina’. Debbie attended Gt Cornard Upper School and worked at the large Sudbury company Delphi Diesel Systems, before obtaining a BA Honours Degree in Art in the Community in Roehampton in London1997. Debbie wanted to give something back to the Sudbury community she grew up in, and last year won second place from the NHS West Suffolk Clinical Commissioning Group, for a competition for art work to be placed in the newly built Health and Community Health centre in Sudbury. A print of her work has been permanently installed in the Sudbury Health and Community centre and she received an award of £1500. Richard was the first to show his artistry.in the family, graduating with a BA Honours degree from Camberwell School of Art in London. He now works as a self-employed graphic designer and has had his work published by major publishing houses. Richard has also managed to combine his graphic skills with fine art, producing clearly defined and beautiful scenes of Ipswich and the local area, which have proved to be very popular in outlets all around Suffolk and beyond. Debbie and Richard are carrying on the family tradition of artistic endeavour. Their father is related to Lionel Wendt, the most famous artist to come out of Sri Lanka. Lionel Wendt was a Dutch Burgher, a musician who studied at the Royal Academy of Music in London and later became famous as a photographer and cinematographer. Wendt also founded the 43 Group in the 1940s, the first Modernist art group in Sri Lanka. The Lionel Wendt Art Centre was built in his honour in Sri Lanka’s capital, Colombo. You can view ‘Wendt on Water’ from Tuesday 28th July to Saturday 22nd August in Gallery One (The Tearoom) and there is an Open View which is open to the public 1st August 2.00pm to 4.00pm where giclee prints, greeting cards and postcards of Debbie and Richard’s work will also be on sale.
