Beyond the floodlights and the goal posts....... By Donna Ramsey – The Millfield Bar & Facilities Manager If I had a pound for every time I hear someone say “I thought The Millfield was just a football club, I'd be sunning myself on a beach in the Caribbean. The mention of Hadleigh United Football Club to most people conjures up pictures of grass pitches and men and kids of all ages running around in white & navy, but it's my job to make sure people know that we are more than 'just a football club'. Our refurbished function rooms were opened in April 2009 by Mr. Brian Lazenby, the towns Mayor, the same day that the club was officially promoted to the Ridgeons League Premier Division. The committee realised that the club needed to create a venue that could be one of the best in the area to generate an income that would help fund the running of our football teams, and that is exactly what we have. We are situated to the east of the Town on the banks of the River Brett, hence the teams nickname 'The Brettsiders'. We have a tarmac car park which accommodates around 90 cars, vitally important for delegates attending training sessions or meetings knowing that they can park close to where the event is taking place. We now have two function rooms, which are used most days of the week for meetings, seminars and training sessions. The function rooms can be opened up into one large room accommodating up to 180 people, each room has it's own entrance and licensed bar and can be furnished to suit our clients needs. Our rooms are furnished with leather sofa's, dark wood tables and high back faux leather chairs and the main room is fully air conditioned and there is also a fully functional kitchen. The club has been awarded a five star rating for very high standards of food safety management by Babergh District Council. Outside we have a large block paved terrace area which overlooks the main pitch, and, beyond that the rolling hills of the picturesque and tranquil Suffolk countryside. Because we have our prized assets of location, parking and space, all I needed to concentrate on when I took on the role was service, then we would succeed in what is essentially a service industry. I still recall my dismay when I realised that there was no internet connection in the building, how was I going to survive! A few drastic measures had to be taken, and now were up and running. We now have some great staff who provide the service for our clients demands, providing refreshments and excellent buffets to satisfy our corporate clients. So, although from Tinkers Lane all you can see is floodlights and goal posts........ we are actually 'so much more than a football club'. If only they could talk..... The animals and people at Suffolk and Essex Small Animal Welfare are enjoying the warmer weather, when it's not raining. One of the volunteers was talking to the Guinea Pigs in the garden yesterday - and they were answering her! Dawn explained that squeaking and purring are happy noises, sometimes they even sing, and they get really excited when they hear her pulling up grass for them to eat. We have lots of pretty, long haired boys like Buzz and Woody, paired up ready to be rehomed. They make lovely children's pets and the silky hair is tangle free. Although Guinea Pigs can be kept in a sheltered position, a shed is ideal and makes life easier for the owner, especially in the winter. Another talkative animal curently residing with us is Bustopher, a big boy with CATitude! This affectionate, dapper black and white cat has plenty to say but lets you know when he has had enough, so needs an understanding home. Visit him and the Piggies at Stoke Road, Leavenheath, CO6 4PP between 10am-1pm from Wednesday to Sunday or leave a message on 01787 210888. I hear we have several different dogs coming in soon so I'll tell you about them next month. Meanwhile I'm going to supervise making our Scarecrow, ready for the Leavenheath Open Gardens Day on Sunday 23rd June. Don't forget to call in when you get to our end of the village, we are staying open especially and you might see little old me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua.
