Looking for a Host Family in Hadleigh...

We already have a family who are looking forward to Hosting children from Chernobyl in the summer of 2017 but they were originally going to share transportation with another family in Hadleigh who unfortunately will now no longer be hosting. We are looking for a family that would be happy to “buddy up” with someone else in the town. Our existing Hosts are hoping to find someone who will be able to do the morning run with the children to our centre and they would return the favour by doing the afternoon collection. We would appeal to anyone interested in hosting to get in touch now as we have to start processing the invitation to the authorities in Belarus by January 2017. The children will be with us for four weeks from 2nd to 30th July. All that is needed is a minimum of a mattress to sleep on and a loving home with people who care, Financial circumstances are immaterial. Age is not a barrier - single parents considered, Families may or may not still have their own children at home. Hosts are able to follow their own occupation/interests as the children meet daily MonFri 8.30 to 4.30 and helpers are on hand to collect or look after children at other times if needed. We are also asking for donations of good quality second hand clothing for the summer group for age range 7 to 11 years. The children arrive with only the clothes they are wearing so both summer and winter clothes are appreciated. For further information about our program or to donate clothes for the children please email or call me and I will be happy to provide further details We are very aware that there are now more Charitable causes than ever all needing support. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who supports us, you may think you only do a little but without you we could not survive.

Fidelis Activity News

Movie Evening:- Opening with clip from Casablanca with Ingrid Bergman and Humphrey Bogart was a perfect start to speaker Mark Mitchels’ absorbing talk on Movie History. He deftly traced the industry’s progression from silent to talkies using hand flicked cards to present day techniques with screened examples of each. Members were able to relive the days of Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Judy Garland and Errol Flynn to name just a few. Most movie genres were represented from early propaganda footage to westerns with John Wayne. Finishing with the iconic watery street scene with Gene Kelly ‘Singing in The Rain’ was the perfect way to end a most informative, enjoyable evening with a difference. Christmas Supper: Wearing their best bib and tucker members thoroughly enjoyed an early seasonal supper before turkey fatigue set in. Cheryl Salisbury and her band of helpers served a delicious two course meal in the Hadleigh Dining Room. Each diner received a decorated miniature kilner jar which Lin Slaughter had hand decorated and filled with chocolates to go with their coffee. Liz Wilson thanked Cheryl and barman Steve Laing for their contribution to the evening. The evening closed with a reading, by Jan Devey, of the humorous version of The Twelve Days of Christmas followed by her take on the EU referendum. This concluded with a toast to both the ‘ins’ and the’ outs’. Winter Lights:- After months of waiting, fifty members and their visitors finally made it to the Winter Lights at Anglesey Abbey. Happily the wait was well worthwhile. After a ‘one pot’ meal in the National Trust’s large café/restaurant the group ventured into the darkness to find the illuminations. The trail is well defined and initially the lighting is quite low key. However, along the way this becomes more creative, ambitious and spectacular. Statues, art work and even the Mill and Abbey are all subtly lit to show them at their best. Although the weather was very mild ladies were happy to take advantage of the Gluhwein and hot chocolate stands which are strategically placed near an ‘entertainment’ and rest spot. In spite of tickets sales topping 18,000 this year, it was busy but comfortable throughout the venue. Having spent the evening in this magical setting, the trees enroute to Hadleigh seemed very ordinary. The Nutcracker:- A small group of ballet lovers escaped the Christmas frenzy to enjoy the more magical setting of The Nutcracker. This delightful ballet was beamed in live from the Royal Opera House, London, to Cineworld, Ipswich. It was a sumptuous, colourful performance with an enormous number of dancers from The Royal Ballet and its School. Pure joy and escapism.

GSOL IBBONS ICITO RS Howard at The Orwell Hotel Felixstowe Hello my dear readers. As you cast your eye down my column with trepidation, the Joy of Christmas will be fading. Your Christmas baubles will be twinkling for the last time. Your Yuletide log will be but a shadow of its former self withered and exhausted. Why not cheer yourself up and arrange to come to see me to fulfil those New Year’s Resolutions. Yes, it is time to make your new Wills and with the Property Nil Rate Band for Inheritance Tax arriving in April you do really need to be getting your testamentary affairs in order. Everyone should also have a Lasting Power of Attorney so that your financial arrangements can continue even if there is an unforeseen occurrence leaving you without mental capacity. On the brighter side, you could be buying or selling a house or taking a lease of a shop. Take advantage of my thirty years of experience. Before my housekeeper, Maria, met my chauffeur Frank she was besotted with her then husband. Unfortunately, he came to a sticky end when he tripped over a coconut on a beach in the Seychelles. They did though have a son Thomas Dinsdale who is a good friend of mine and appears in the picture taken at The Orwell Hotel in Felixstowe. Thomas is an excellent photographer. Indeed, my Christmas card which was sent to some two hundred of my closest friends featured a great portrait of me. The Orwell Hotel at the foot of Beatrice Avenue in Felixstowe is really worth a visit. There is an excellent Sunday lunch when the piano plays, a dessert trolley and such like. Lunches and dinners during the week are excellently priced. I know that many of you are owner drivers and do not have a chauffeur, (how contemporary), so you can take to the trunk roads. You will all know how much I enjoy my annual visit to The Christmas Show at Thursford near Fakenham in Norfolk. The Cambridges tell me (via the Hello Magazine) that they were there again this year with their children. I was accompanied by The Lord of the Manor of Polstead, Alan Keeble and Susan Keeble. Our Number One motor car was soon soiled with road grime as Frank piloted us through the dark and mist of Thetford Forest. We had a wonderful tea in front of a cosy fire at The Chequers Inn Front Street Binham (01328 830297) which is just a few miles from Thursford itself. As we entered through the gates of Thursford we were waved past the hoi polloi to the front door and took our seats as the curtain rose. A cast of hundreds, the Wurlitzer organ, a band and orchestra. Celebrating forty years this is rightly a “World Class” show and the finest of its type in Europe. Happy New Year, Howard Gibbons

Hadleigh Parkside Pre-School

This term we have been busy raising funds for the pre-school in November our Pamper night was a great success we had lots of stalls and nibbles a great time to stock up for Christmas so thankyou to all who took part! The beginning of December saw us taking part in the Hadleigh lighting up ceremony where we had crafts for the children to do and a few games to play. Through these we raised enough money to be able to buy 4 Tablets. These are going to be used by staff for Online Tapestry Learning Journeys and for the children to access IT! Thankyou to everyone for all their donations and hard work. Parkside offers the children unique experiences as we are able to take them out and about on Nature Walks around the field feeding the Ducks and even to the Park next door! We have also had the Police visit us where the children were able to go in the Police Car and have their finger prints taken! We are also had an exciting visit from the Fire Engine too! We ended the term with a small informal sing song of carols from the children to the parents with coffee and mince pies and a chance to look through their Learning Journeys and say hi to Staff! After Christmas we start back on 5th January 2017 where we will be offering longer Flexible hours. We will be open from Monday to Friday 8am till 6pm. Breakfast is included in our hourly rate and our extended hours from 3pm can be paid by the hour. Morning Session is from 9-12/1pm Afternoon Session from 12-3. Lunch club is from 12.00 -1pm. We welcome children from 2 years to 5 years of age, children that are 3yrs will be able to receive Government Funding and some 2 year olds, which will need to meet a criteria.Don’t Forget! We offer a pickup service from St Marys at lunch time everyday. Spaces are still available every day! Contact Lucy or Sue on 01473 827702 or e-mail office@hadleighparksidepre-school.co.uk We look forward to welcoming our new children in the New Year!

Crafts for Charity

After months of hard work, Lin Slaughter finally had the opportunity to offer the results to the public just in time for Christmas. Her hand crafted gifts and Christmas decorations were attractively displayed at Walter Wrights’ in the hope of tempting High Street shoppers to part with their money for her chosen charity, Macmillan Cancer Support. Business was brisk from mid-morning to early afternoon as many visitors were already familiar with Lin’s creations. They had come to replenish their own dwindling stock of handmade Christmas gifts and also Lin with her cheque for see if Lin had any new ideas on offer. Macmillan Cancer Support Judging by the final takings from the sale and the raffle, few people went away empty handed. There certainly wasn’t much for Lin to take home and she was delighted and touched by everyone’s generosity. When the takings were finally counted the total came to £650.00. Macmillan Cancer Support will be presented with a cheque for that amount. Lin would like to thank Accountants Walter Wright for the use of their premises, her helpers and all the folks who gave their support on the day. JD

Surviving Winter In Hadleigh (And 12 Surrounding Villages)

We express our thanks for two generous donations in December; the donors wish to remain anonymous. Our thanks also to those people who took part in our Christmas Draw. All donations and proceeds will be devoted to the pursuance of our declared aim which is: “The relief of financial hardship and promotion of good health of people living in and around Hadleigh, Suffolk, by the provision of supplies such as blankets, clothing, flasks, hot water bottles and similar supplies, assisting in the purchase of fuel and meeting the cost of call-outs or emergency repairs to heating systems to enable people to keep warm over winter.” We have no restrictions on age, disability or whether in receipt of benefit of any kind. If you have a problem or know of someone who has difficulty in keeping warm as a result of constant low winter temperatures we will do all we can to give you or them our support. To date we have already helped many people. We did some research before we started and found that much of the government winter fuel allowance is not used by many of the recipients for the pupose for which it was intended so please consider donating some of it to our cause.

Rotary Review

CHRISTMAS COLLECTIONS: At the time of writing this, two House to House Collections have been completed raising some £430 whilst a large number of children have been excited to meet Father Christmas with parents enjoying it just as much! Everyone has been very generous and Rotary, on behalf of the local charities which will benefit in due course, thank you so much. The weather has been kind to the collectors and it is hoped that it will stay that way this week to allow the rounds to be completed in the dry. At this point Rotary apologises for not appearing in the High Street on Christmas Eve probably for only the second time in 35 years. This was due to Father Christmas being overworked and unable to attend!! CLUB EVENTS: 1. At a Special General Meeting in early December the following officers were elected for Rotary year 2017/18 commencing 1st July 2017 : President - David Stokes, Vice President - Richard Whiting, Secretary - Glenn Abbassi, Treasurer - Ian Burne. 2. The usual members' Christmas Party went with a swing and an enjoyable evening was spent at the Hadleigh Ram whose staff looked after us very well - many thanks to them. 3. It is hoped to hold the traditional Champagne Brunch early in the New Year. MEMBERSHIP and MEETINGS: Members are encouraged by continued interest in joining the Club and it is hoped that this will result in a substantial increase in membership during the coming few months. It is expected that the Club will become settled at the Kings Head, where we have received a warm welcome from Mike and his staff, with future meetings taking place on the second Tuesday and fourth Thursday of each month at lunchtime 12.30 for 1pm. January meetings will be Tueday 10th and Thursday 26th. Members would also like to thank Tori and her staff at The George for hosting a monthly meeting of the Club during the Autumn - great food, great staff but, unfortunately, the available accomodation did not quite suit the Club requirements. With the Club facing a brighter future in 2017 it is hoped that more people will be encouraged to find out more about Rotary - Interested? just phone David Stokes 01473 827226 or leave contact details on Rotary Club of Hadleigh

Hadleigh Healing Society

A Happy and Peaceful New Year to everyone with the hope that life will be easier and less stressful. Hopefully, there will be more harmony between nations because conflict only causes bitterness, hate and destruction. Just smiling once a day makes someone on the receiving end of it feel better but you will also benefit. A smile or a hello costs nothing, give it freely, and the world will seem a better place. Remember that wonderful smile of a small child. These memories remain with us for ever. Lots of people do not have many happy memories, they only remember the unhappy times. Allow us, the healers, to listen not make any judgements all in the strictest confidence and perhaps you will feel as if you have shed a heavy load. Would you like to join our happy team of professionals and volunteers, supporting our ‘Better Together’ Parent and Toddler group? If you can spare an hour or two on an occasional Monday morning (between 9.30am and 11.30am), at Hadleigh Baptist Church, George St. Hadleigh, and don’t mind a noisy, vibrant environment, we’d love to hear from you.

The SOLAR Revolution

The uptake of solar panels across the UK has been so dramatic, that from April to September 2016, more of the UK’s power was generated by solar than coal for the first time. So what is driving the solar revolution? Well there are three things that have had a major impact; the Government’s generous incentive scheme, a desire to reduce domestic energy bills and a greater awareness of the environment. The government needs 15% of electricity to come from renewables like solar by 2020 in order to meet their renewable energy target. Instead of spending a huge amount of money to build and generate all this themselves, they’ve figured out a much cheaper and quicker way — incentivise UK homeowners to do it for them. Under the UK government’s feed-in tariff program, electricity companies must pay customers for all the electricity their solar panels produce. Electricity is not cheap and prices are always going up. With a huge energy demand and a national energy crisis, the upward trend is set to continue. However, if you have a solar PV system, all the electricity you produce, you can have free of charge and so you can dramatically slash your energy bills. In some cases these savings could be huge. The renewable targets have been set in order to combat global warming and the reduction of carbon use is key. All the clean electricity that you generate will be used and so reduce carbon. You are not only cutting your own carbon footprint, but you are also helping the planet. Hadleigh’s Energy on Tap Limited offer a complete solar installation service at a sensible price. We use the best products with 20 year warranties. We can design systems for any roof or even for garden buildings / structures. If you are interested in joining the solar revolution, then give Mark a call at Energy on Tap Limited, 07780 975787.

Fresh air and exercise at Orchard Barn

Have you been considering improving your health and fitness? Taking out gym membership or joining a sports group are two of ways of doing this. Another possibility is the green gym, getting involved in a variety of physical tasks outdoors on a regular basis. At Orchard Barn, volunteers are never sure what they’ll be doing on any particular day but know that even on the coldest of days they’ll soon be warm and feeling more cheerful. Some of the more strenuous activities such as mixing cob for clay lump block or digging clay out of ditches need to be done in short spells at first. Other tasks such as hedge-laying need a more considered approach but still involve some strength. Pushing a wheelbarrow may sound uninteresting but, when there is a wealth of wildlife to see, the effort becomes less noticeable. And at the end of the day you will have an inner warm, feel pleasantly tired and will be able to see something that you’ve helped to create for the benefit of others. Want to join the Orchard Barn green gym? It’s free! Our website is orchardbarn.org.uk or contact us on 01473 658193 or 07766 054042

We are looking for volunteers to help set-up and clear away the toys, prepare snacks and help our professionals keep the sessions running smoothly.

Long Melford Swan makes a splash with Duck Deli concept

One of Long Melford’s most innovative pubs has launched another exciting new concept with the opening of its own delicatessen. The Swan at Long Melford has a history of groundbreaking ideas and its latest is to make for sale some of the best products used within the dishes served in its restaurant at ‘Duck Deli’. The Deli held a grand opening on 13 December at the pub, leased from Greene King, and, in time for Christmas, has put together a range of hampers to buy. The hugely popular Long Melford Swan opened in 2011 as Stuart Inns’ first venture with the company also operating the Hadleigh Ram and Lavenham Greyhound. All three businesses are owned by the Macmillan family, Andrew Macmillan, daughter Lorna Pissarro and sons Oliver and Iain Macmillan. Marketing Director for Stuart Inns, Lorna Pissarro said: “By making available food and drink from the same suppliers we use ourselves we feel we are giving people the chance to take home a little part of what they enjoy so much while at the pub. “We are really excited by the potential for ‘Duck Deli’ which is full of foodie delights. For years customers have told us they want to try the delicious products we use in their own dishes.” Clive Chesser, managing director of Greene King Pub Partners, said: “The Long Melford Swan has an outstanding reputation locally and at Greene King we always look to support pubs who want to innovate. “Duck Deli looks fantastic with an outstanding range of products on offer and this shows what can be achieved when a pub looks beyond the usual parameters and thinks about what would really excite customers.” ‘Duck Deli’ is one of several recent changes at the Long Melford Swan including the introduction of a garden dining room, three boutique bedrooms, and a new chef’s pantry. The latter has a special chef’s table, a dining experience positioned deliberately close to the kitchens so that the chefs can introduce the dishes as they are served. www.duckdeli.co.uk 01787 464545

New £250,000 Technogym launched at Peake Fitness by original founder members from 1999!

Kate Charlton Jones and Roger Toone cut the ribbon in Peake Fitness, with Peake Fitness Manager Chris Grimwood (between them), fellow members and staff.

We would like to thank all of our customers for your continued support and wish you all a very happy new year.

Peake Fitness, the health and fitness club at the award-winning, family-owned Stoke by Nayland Hotel, Golf & Spa complex, has just re-opened with its exciting new £250,000 ground breaking Technogym equipment. This is now the first fully-integrated gym of its kind in the UK! Cutting the ribbon at the launch party on 5th December were two founder members of the club, Kate Charlton Jones and Roger Toone, who joined in 1999 when it originally opened. Kate remembered, “Seventeen years ago I walked into Peake Fitness for the first time and what took my breath away – and still does – was the view. You cannot find exercise tedious when the surroundings are so magical - the lake and the trees changing with the seasons are an enormous boost to energy and imagination. I am very excited about the fabulous new equipment - It will be sure to revitalise our programmes! Roger said: “I have the pleasure and privilege of being a member of Peake Fitness since 1999. When it opened then we were handed a glass of champagne and a commemorative tee shirt which I still treasure. Peake Fitness has always provided me with a warm and welcoming environment for keeping fit, and I hope to be a member for another 17 years! To compare the gym equipment of 1999 with this amazing Technogym range today is the equivalent of comparing your old land line to your latest mobile – I can’t wait for my new induction!” Demonstrating the club’s commitment to provide its members with the ultimate in top of the range equipment and the best possible customer experience, Peake Fitness has replaced both its Excite Cardio and Bio Strength Resistance ranges with Technogym’s premium range: ARTIS CARDIO & ARTIS STRENGTH. The gym has also upgraded its exercise management software solution from the iconic Wellness System to Technogym’s latest digital platform: MY WELLNESS CLOUD which offers limitless solutions to data tracking, exercises and workouts for each of its consumers. ARTIS, with MY WELLNESS CLOUD, is the world’s first ever fully integrated collection of cardio, strength and functional gymnasium equipment, and Peake Fitness at Stoke by Nayland is the first site in the UK to host this system with Technogym’s latest console UNITY MINI. Chris Grimwood, Peake Fitness Club Manager, said: “We’re delighted to be continuing our 17 year long relationship with Technogym UK and believe that this system is by far the most superior, fully integrated equipment on the market – our members are certainly in for a treat!” More information can be found on at the website www.stokebynayland.com/membership/leisure-membership or by calling Peake Reception on 01206 265820/822 or Mary Saward on 01206 265841 and email mary.saward@stokegolfandleisure.com

Life at The Shelley Centre

Welcome back everyone and a happy new year to you all! Did you have a good Christmas? I hear the volunteers had a bit of a shindig at the end of last term, and that our carol service in Shelley Church was very special. Babs and I have to miss out on that sort of thing, so we know how you feel if you weren’t being festive, either. I did see some sights though: our humans make a big effort to decorate the stables and impart some comedy into the end of term rides. Pictured are three suspects by the arena, John, Sue and yes, Louise, she really does have a knitted turkey on her head! A word about the Management Committee: we have trustees looking after the business side of the Centre, seeing that we work to the highest possible standard, obey the law, provide accounts to be vetted, and look after the people, ponies AND me, the simulator. Like all small charities they have had to learn how to do this in addition to the voluntary work they all took on with such excitement and enthusiasm, It is quite a learning curve for amateurs. So I’m speaking for the herd and our riders when I say thank you to them all. I’m also wondering if there are retired people in the Hadleigh area who like corporate business and miss it enough to come and join the Management Team to share their expertise with us? You could stay well away from horses if that’s your preference, but of course I should like to meet you and show off my paces! So keep warm, keep working, and count your blessings folks; I’ll be back again in February with more news of our riders and their amazing achievements, and hopefully some news of new members of the herd. Ofsted - June 2016 Introduction by Gary Pilkington, Headteacher

What a busy festive month we have had here at Hadleigh Community Primary School. 115 children from choir, recorder groups and bells started the festive spirit by performing a selection of traditional carols and Christmas songs in the Baptist Church. 52 musicians were also welcomed at Magdalen House Care Home where they enjoyed taking part in another Christmas performance. The term will end with our Carol service in St Mary's Church with violins, recorders, bells, choir and the presentation of a story by KS2. Best wishes for 2017 to everyone in the community.

During the Autumn Term we have taken part in a total of 11 sporting events. These events have varied between football festivals, basketball matches, cross country events and tag rugby competitions. In November we entered a Year 5/6 Football team into the Under 11's Ipswich Schools Football Festival. From this, our team progressed to the Quarter-Finals where we came up against St Mary's Woodbridge. Due to the match being goalless, this took us into penalties but in the end we won 4-1. In the semi-final they went on to beat East Bergholt 2-0 and in the Final we met Kyson and won 2-0 claiming the trophy. County Finals here we come!. We also entered a Year 5 team into the Hadleigh School's Pyramid Tag Rugby Festival at Hadleigh High School where the team won 2 games, drew 1 game and lost 1 game. Well done to everyone that has taken part in any events over the course of the term!

Key Stage 1 (Years 1 + 2)

Year 1 have taken centre stage this month as they prepared and performed their take on the Christmas Nativity story. The play called 'A Midwife Crisis' entertained the whole school as well as their parents and was a highly amusing tale. Year 2 have enjoyed a special 'Maths in the Movies' week where limbo, gingerbread men and potions helped them learn some key mathematical skills. Both year groups managed to produce some incredible pieces of homework for our Tic-Tac-Toe Homework Celebration and it was brilliant to see so many parents coming in to hear about the work the pupils had completed.

Key Stage 2 (Years 3 + 6)

As part of their history topic covering prehistoric Britain and their science studying rocks, Year 3 have learnt where and how fossils are formed. They then made their own fossils (in a much shorter time of course) using potters plaster and clay. Once set, the children were then able to paint them. After watching Ice Age, the movie, the children spent a morning doing Maths in the Movies, learning about horizontal and vertical lines and how to measure them. They then used these new skills to label Manny the mammoth. Finally, they solved a tangram of the same character. To celebrate the festive season and help decorate part of the school, the children made Christmas decorations in the form of Rudolf the reindeer, Father Christmas and his elf. As a finishing touch, Year 3 were shown cartoon faces to make their decoration individual and comical!

It’s been a very busy half term for Year 6!

Early Years Foundation Stage - Nursery

In Nursery we have been learning all about Christmas and the Christmas story. Trish from the church came in to tell us the story of the first Christmas. We also enjoyed learning and performing lots of Christmas songs, and making some delicious gingerbread men.

They have been on a five day residential trip to the North Norfolk coast. Amazing activities filled the week, where children were able to exceed their own expectations. They climbed their way up to the High Equilibrium and negotiated their way down the abseiling wall. Archery and fencing skills were learnt. They even got to go caving and so much more.On their return, it was straight in to Christmas, with decorations made and preparations for the Carol Concert. They have even had time to make guacamole, as part of their Ancient Maya topic! Year 6 would like to thank Boots the Chemist for donating medicines for their Kingswood trip.

The Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance would like to say a big thank you to Mary Munson and her daughters Catherine and Hannah for selecting the HDAA for donations in memory of Laurie Munson who passed away in October this year. Mary was at the first meeting of the Alliance back in September 2014 and talked about the importance of working to become a dementia friendly Hadleigh. Laurie was going through his dementia diagnosis at this time. Two years on the Alliance is proud of what has been achieved in Hadleigh, creating around 1434 dementia friends has really helped to raise awareness and understanding in the Town. Funds of £500.40 have been received in Laurie’s memory which we are incredibly grateful. Thank you to everyone who made a contribution in Laurie’s name. James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk

At the last general election, when I stood for election as your MP for the first time, my top commitment was to campaign for ‘opportunities for young people’. What does this mean and why is it so important? It’s about ensuring young people can flourish in South Suffolk, rather than feeling that the only option after completing their studies is a long commute to the ‘big smoke’. And it’s also about recognising that we will face a demographically unsustainable future if the balance between young and old in our local communities becomes tilted entirely in the more senior direction of things. This is not to complain about the trend for living longer – this is one of the great achievements of the modern era, and who wouldn’t want to live to a ripe old age? Nor is this about ‘inter-generational’ tensions. On the contrary, it was striking for me that concern for today’s young was one of the biggest topics on the doorstep when I spoke to many older residents on the election trail. Frankly, it is in all our interests that every generation has the chance to contribute to their maximum potential. If we are to afford the growing cost of pensions and social care, we need a strong and thriving economy – and that in turn requires a workforce with the best possible education and skills. The good news is that we are making real progress in Suffolk, after previously lagging behind in education terms. Latest figures show that 85% of Suffolk’s schools are good or outstanding and this should get even better with the longawaited confirmation of ‘fairer funding’. For so long our schools have received less money compared to schools in better funded areas. So in December the Government announced a new single, national formula to deliver fairer funding in practice. It’s complex to assess the impact of the changes, and there will be a long transition to ensure better funded schools do not suffer adversely. Nevertheless, an initial look at the data suggests South Suffolk will do relatively well. For every one of us, that should be very welcome indeed.

Hadleigh North District Councillors Contacting Tina Campbell and Dr. Siân Dawson

After one year into the new Babergh District Council administration, we have taken the strategic view, following consultation with residents, to simply make ourselves available for surgery advice and to meet with residents at any time in the British Legion rather than a monthly surgery. Playstation Pre-School

Last half term was a very busy one, with Christmas preparations, cards, presents and decorations. We were learning about the true meaning of Christmas while still keeping the magic of Father Christmas alive. Thank you for the great support we have on our photo morning in the October half term, there were lots of very photogenic children. The Light Up Ceremony at Long Bessels was brilliant and went really well, thank you to everyone who organised it along with the help of many volunteers on the night. Donations can still be made via a box on side of the house of fundraising page via Facebook. Thank you to our committee who manned our cake and lucky dip stall on the night, we raised about £180, which will go towards a shed to store all our new outdoor resources. And thank you to everyone who supported us by baking some lovely cakes or buying them on the night. We had our Christmas party at the Ansell Centre on the 20th December, entertainment by Fun Play Ltd. Great fun was had by all. It was Christmas Jumper day on Friday 16th December, lots of different jumpers worn and money raised for Save the Children. Big thank you to Mark Price who came in to teach the children about fire safety, children (and staff) had a chance to operate a fire extinguisher. We will be holding a Quiz night in the New Year, more details for follow. Lastly we would like to welcome the new children who have joined us and good luck to those that have moved on to pastures new. Wishing everyone a Happy and Healthy 2017. Whoops! There go my onions!

Boxford Drama Group has invited those lovely ladies from the Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society back for their March production. So if you enjoyed their previous ventures on the Boxford Village Hall stage in ‘The Haunted Through Lounge and Recessed Dining Nook at Farndale Castle’ and ‘The Farndale Avenue Housing Estate Townswomen’s Guild Dramatic Society Murder Mystery’ then you’ll simply love their latest production entitled ‘Chase Me Up Farndale Avenue, S’il Vous Plait’. The Farndale ladies latest production, set in Paris, has all the ingredients of a classic farce featuring a delicious French maid, a plumber, the secretary, the mistress, husbands and wives but not necessarily married to each other, the lovers tryst, some dodgy dealings, plenty of doors, a hoover with a mind of its own, and let’s not mention the accordion! Confusion reigns as everyone tries to keep track of who is married to who, who is having an affair and with whom, who is in the kitchen with the decorator, who stole the occasional table and exactly where is the painting of the Laughing Cavalier? What could possibly go wrong……………apart from collapsing furniture, forgotten lines, miss-timed sound effects and general am-dram mishaps and mayhem for which those Farndale ladies are famous for. This hilarious comedy, written by David McGillivray & Walter Zerlin jnr, will be on at Boxford Village Hall on 30th, 31st March and 1st April 2017. Tickets will be available from Boxford Post Office from 25th February 2017

Christmas Fun This is always such a busy time of the year! The children have been having lots of fun, getting ready for Christmas and celebrating in school. The Christmas dinner is always very exciting and the children made fabulous Christmas hats for the occasion. They all looked very Christmassy in their festive jumpers and red and green clothes! Thanks to the kitchen staff, who did a great job of cooking so many Christmas dinners! The children in the Early Years put on a brilliant performance of ‘The Bossy King’ and Key Stage 1 performed ‘It’s a Cracker’. Both productions were full of excellent singing and dancing. The children’s voices were so clear and we are all amazed by how much they had to learn and remember. As always, thanks to all the staff members and parents who put such a lot of work into these performances. Most of all, well done to all the children, who kept us thoroughly entertained while helping us to remember, and reflect on, the Christmas story. Christmas Fayre Many thanks to all the parents who organised the Christmas Fayre. It was so busy and everyone enjoyed the Christmas spirit! As usual, the Key Stage 2 children began the Fayre on the stage and delighted us all with a series of Christmas Carols and songs. There were so many things to do and see. Santa Clause had brought a real reindeer to meet the children this year, which caused lots of excitement! Santa was very impressed with the children who came to see him. He said that they were very polite and, when they were asked what they wanted for Christmas, many of them replied that they wanted peace for the world or for everyone to be happy. Festival of Trees Thank you to our Parent Support Group which has helped us to celebrate Christmas at St Mary’s Church by donating a huge tree for the Festival of Trees. Each class in the school contributed different decorations, based on the school colours. I’m sure you’ll agree that the end result looks beautiful. Well done to all the children who decorated the tree and delivered it to the church. RE Enrichment Days Thank you to Pastor Chris at the Baptist Church, who hosted our Year 5 and 6 children for a session on prayer. The children worked collaboratively to answer questions and reflect on passages from the Bible. The children took part in lots of thoughtful discussions. When the children returned to school, they wrote Christmas prayers to be used in the school’s Carol Service. It was a brilliant afternoon and we are very grateful for Pastor Chris’s time and ideas. Also, children from Key Stage 2 took part in an R exciting RE enrichment day at the United Reform Church. This fantastic experience was led by Victoria Bush, who really engaged and inspired the children. In the morning the children focused on writing prayers for a range of purposes, including the seasons and special times in the Christian calendar. We intend to print the children’s prayers as a book to be used in assemblies in schools throughout the pyramid. In the afternoon, the children produced stunning artwork based on the stained glass windows in St Mary’s Church.

Thanks to both churches for hosting and thanks to all the children and adults from different schools who participated in the day. Worship Many thanks to all the people who have helped us by leading Worship this month. Joyce Willis, Brian Hempstead and Pastor Greg have helped the children to think about the value of ‘compassion’ and the season of Advent. The team from Christian Youth Ministries put on a super performance to retell the Christmas story and explain why it’s so important to reflect on this today. It was great to welcome Canon John Parr into the school for Worship for the first time. Canon John spoke to the children about the story of Abraham and discussed the candles on the Advent wreath. Now Christmas is almost here! We would like to wish everyone in the community a wonderful Christmas and a happy, peaceful New Year. See you all in 2017!

The Cinnamon Trust

The Cinnamon Trust was founded in 1985 by Mrs Averil Jarvis and named after her pet corgi, Cinnamon. It is a national registered charity which supports older people and those with a terminal illness in caring for their pets. A national network of 18,000 volunteers has been established to provide practical help when any aspect of day to day care poses a problem – for example, walking the dog for a housebound owner or cleaning out a cage for someone with a disability. A national fostering service is provided for pets whose owners face a spell in hospital – volunteers take pets into their own homes and supply love and care in abundance until owner and pet can be reunited. The Cinnamon Trust also provides long term care for pets whose owners have died or moved to residential accommodation which will not accept pets. Arrangements are made between owners and the Trust well in advance, if possible, so owners have peace of mind in the knowledge that their beloved companion will have a safe and happy future. Emergency cards are available on request. I have many years' experience of caring for pets and have recently been accepted as a volunteer for the Trust, covering Hadleigh and surrounding villages. If you would like any support or information would you please in the first instance contact the main office number on 01736 757900 and they will pass referrals to me. Suzanne Fox

Bikeablity Spider Class participated in a cycling proficiency course, ‘Bikeablity’. The course was run by Freewheel Cycle Training and the children were instructed up to Level 2 of the National Standards of Cycling. The children all really enjoyed taking part, despite getting soaked in the rain one afternoon! Parent Assemblies At Beaumont we embrace our relationships with parents. Our pupils were proud to invite parents into their first assembly for this year and show them all their new learning. The assemblies were well attended by parents and a great success. We know our parents are looking forward to the Spring Term assemblies, but be aware parents, there might be a test at the end ☺. Bumblebees and Dragonflies trip to Hollytrees Museum As part of their work on the history of toys and life in the past, Bumblebees and Dragonflies class visited Hollytrees museum in Colchester. The children had lovely day learning about what toys, children just like them played with years ago. All of the children represented the school really well. Mayor Planting Apple Tree Morrison’s have kindly donated an apple tree to the school. We were fortunate enough to have the Mayor of Hadleigh help Mrs Liggett and the children from Gardening Club plant the tree by the school car park. Our cook has promised to use the apples in her delicious apple pie. Christmas at Beaumont Primary School! All the pupils participated in decorating the TWO Christmas Trees in a dimly lit school hall. Christmas carols played in the background as the pupils merrily hung their favourite baubles. It’s a new tradition at Beaumont that is definitely here to stay. We would like to say a big thank you to every parent who has supported our events this half term. Our Christmas Raffle has been a huge success thanks to your kind donations, and the donations from local businesses. We would especially like to thank Mrs Henderson, Mrs Barton, Mrs Hatcher, Mrs Reid and Mr & Mrs Mahoney for their tireless efforts. Happy New Year to all children, parents and staff at Beaumont Community Primary School!

Bike Ride in Memory of Suffolk Police Officer

Two young men from Suffolk, Jason Bullard and Aaron Durrant have recently visited the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre at Ipswich Hospital to present Macmillan Cancer Support with a kind donation of £1375. The pair decided to fundraise in support of Ruth Finbow, who having received the “all clear” from breast cancer, heard the devastating news of a second diagnosis. Ruth was a retired Police Officer who lived in Hintlesham and had previously served in several villages in the Hadleigh and Ipswich area. Jason and Aaron decided to complete a 101 mile bike ride, using bicycles from the 1900’s, to include all the villages where Ruth had worked during her career with the Suffolk Constabulary. The challenge took the boys across the county on a tight schedule, they planned to be back at the Community Hall in Hintlesham, for a celebration of music, karaoke, and a raffle. Hundreds of people turned up on the day to show their support. Unfortunately, Ruth passed away before the event, but the boys still carried on with the help of Steph Coupland and Doug Finbow to make the day a fitting tribute to this much loved and missed member of the community. The whole day and evening was a great success. A grand total of £3,309.00 was raised, to be split between the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre and Cancer Research UK. The donation to Macmillan will cover the cost of a Chemotherapy Treatment Chair in the new Woolverstone Macmillan Centre at Ipswich Hospital. More than twice as many people than ever before can now receive their treatment at any one time. The new centre features spacious treatment suites, gardens, quiet rooms and facilities for loved ones. It is expected that around 21,000 people will use this innovative and specialist centre for cancer services every year. In honour of Ruth, the village will also place a bench outside of the Community Hall, where Ruth was Secretary of the Social Club.Helen Glenholmes, Fundraising Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support said “I cannot thank Aaron and Jason enough, for coming up with such a special way to support our new cancer centre in memory of Ruth. We still need to fundraise to cover the cost of this £4.7 million facility, and we would never have come this far without the kind generosity of communities across Suffolk. We must say a huge thank you to our supporters in Hintlesham for making this wonderful gift” For information on fundraising for the Woolverstone Macmillan Centre, as a business, group or individual, call 0300 1000 200 or visit www.macmillan.org.uk/fundraising

Thread-Bare

It’s seems a million miles away now but Spring will be here before we know it and it will soon be time to bare our legs again. For one Suffolk Mum with unsightly thread veins, however, summer was a time to cover up… It’s a well known fact these days that Laser treatment is the best way to permanently remove unwanted body hair.

What is less well-known, however, is that lasers can be used to brilliant effect to remove or reduce thread veins, both on the face and legs. Melanie, 36, used to dread the summer. "I had terrible thread veins on my legs since my early twenties", she says. "They were mainly around my knees and ankles and looked awful. I would never bare my legs and lived in trousers - even on the hottest of days".

Melanie before treatment

Thread veins (also known as 'spider veins' or 'broken capillaries') are tiny red or purple veins that appear, most commonly, on the legs, cheeks and nose.

Normally, these tiny veins are invisible but in some people they expand, giving the skin a red or purplish tinge. One cause of this is too much exposure to the sun but thread veins can be inherited, caused by pregnancy or a side effect of oestrogen treatment. Dr Anthony O'Neill, Cosmetic Doctor and one half of the team that run Suffolk Medical & Beauty Clinic in Boxford has treated many clients with this condition over the years using Laser IPL (Intense Pulsed Light). The process is quick, easy and has an excellent success rate. "I remember the day Melanie first came to see us", he said. "She was so embarrassed of her legs that we had to persuade her to show us! She needn't have worried, we'd seen it all before. A few Laser IPL sessions later and her broken veins were almost completely gone." "I was amazed" said Melanie. "It took five treatments to work completely but there was a huge improvement after the first two sessions. It was rather uncomfortable but totally worthwhile.

I love my legs now - bring on the summer!" Jenny and Anthony O'Neill are thrilled to announce that in 2016 they won a national WhatClinic award for excellent customer service, for the second year running. The award, based purely upon customer satisfaction, is quite a coup for a small Suffolk practice, considering stiff competition from far larger clinics across the country.

Fed up with hard water and lime scale? Fitting a water softener will save you money and time

East Anglia has some of the hardest water in Great Britain. The scale build up on shower screens and taps, that ring of scum in the basin, and limescale in kettles are some of the visible consequences of hard water. We have to resort to using large amounts of washing powder, conditioner, extra salts in the dish washer and expensive bathroom cleaning products to overcome the dreaded scale. In my professional capacity I’ve replaced countless appliances that should have had a longer service life. Scale blocks water ways in boilers and hot water pipes. Heating elements in hot water cylinders and electric showers get encrusted and fail. All these problems can be solved by fitting an ion exchange water softener. Laundered clothes will feel softer, after showering your skin will feel smoother, you’ll use far less detergents and the adverse effects on your plumbing system will start to reverse. If you would like to know more, give me a call. I’m happy to show you a simple 15 minute demonstration and provide an installation survey. A typical installation can be done in one day. Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

Here we are, at the start of another year and another diet for some of us. Hope my canine readers had a more satisfactory festive season than an acquaintance of mine. Stollen fruits were not the sweetest when the poor fellow was caught devouring a chunk of the German delicacy under the table. Amateurs! As SESAW's Chief Table Swiper, I advised 'Sugar Face' to find an accomplice quick, he obviously needs help if he wants to have his cake and eat it! Before all thoughts of Christmas fade away, we would be glad of any unwanted presents for our raffles. May I also ask you to remember us if you have any spare wool, fabric or craft materials? This is for our talented volunteers who are busy knitting, sewing and creating handmade items for our Easter Fair at Whatfield Village Hall in April. (See photo of me with an over friendly monkey!) If you have anything that might be of use please pop it in a bag, clearly marked “CRAFT MATERIALS” and phone 01473 652080 or leave it at the Sanctuary any morning. Like all the contributors, I wrote this early so Kelvin could put the magazine to bed and enjoy the festive season too. Consequently, I don’t know what animals have come in but you can easily find out. We are open again so if you have resolved to share your home with a new pet, have a look at our website or visit us 10-1pm Thursday-Sunday. Meanwhile, I’m on a mission to retrieve some tasty digestive biscuits someone must have left on the kitchen table for me, Kenny (the Boss) Chihuahua. Hadleigh Orchestra

Conductor: Ute Cooper Leader: Lisa Patchett Thank you to the many people who attended our Christmas Concert at St. Joseph’s on 11th December, and a special thank you also to Thomas who sang the first verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City’ for us so nicely. As a result of your generous donations we were able to send a cheque for £200 to the Rosa Simon Trust. Paul Simon writes: ‘This very generous donation from the Hadleigh Orchestra will go to giving local children and young people more chances than ever before to learn instruments, to gain experience of giving live performances and more generally come to appreciate the profound enjoyment to be gained from music. Thank you to everyone involved’. Rehearsals will begin again this month on January 13th. We meet at Beaumont Primary School on Monday evenings 7.30 - 9.30 p.m. and new members are always welcome. For you and your family it’s got to be Gotelee Solicitors

Christmas can be a pretty stressful time, whether it’s worries over money, getting the “right” present, or who’s hosting who’s family, Christmas can certainly highlight and amplify any strains on a relationship. These kinds of stresses can lead to the unfortunate demise of a relationship and it’s a fact that separation and divorce enquiries with Solicitors peak in the weeks after Christmas. The Family Mediation Helpline claims that two million couples will contemplate divorce during the Christmas holidays. A relationship breakdown can be distressing and even more so if family problems involve children and finances. Divorce might not be something that you are looking for immediately but it’s important to be protected when you separate. Taking legal advice at an early stage can avoid difficulties later on, particularly if there are discussions about who occupies the property, whether assets should be sold and divided and what arrangements for any children are agreed. If you are separating, it may be worth considering mediation. This involves agreeing children arrangements and financial settlements for couples who are separating or divorcing. How can Gotelee Solicitors Family Lawyers help you? Our team of lawyers have many years of experience between them to ensure that you receive appropriate advice and practical support during this difficult time, no matter what your situation. This will include advice on all kinds of problems resulting from a breakdown of a relationship, how to get divorced, the myths, the timescale and cost and the implications for financial arrangements and also any children’s arrangements. Gotelee Solicitors can offer an initial fixed price meeting Jane Fowles to provide you with an understanding of the options available, likely costs and outcomes. Our Solicitors listen and will understand the problem. Our Solicitors have acted for a wide spectrum of clients whose relationships have broken down, so if a difficult situation gets heated and you need help and advice quickly, we’ll be right there by your side. What’s more, we’re local, and able to see you in any of our offices in Ipswich, Felixstowe, Hadleigh, Melton and Woodbridge. Kersey Mill Newsletter Looking back 2016 has been a fantastic and will be a memorable year for Kersey Mill. We have made enormous progress with its restoration. With the frame fully restored we have been able to open the doors to the public. “Drive it day” was a huge success with thousands of visitors. What a privilege it was to have some of the world’s most beautiful vintage vehicles on display. We are looking forward to “Drive it day 2017”. This will be held on April 23rd, so polish up & dust off your special vehicle to get the season underway. You are all welcome and entry for display vehicles is free. It was lovely to have BBC radio Suffolk broadcasting live from the Mill as we officially opened the newly restored upper floors for the first time for the public. Following these works the mill was removed from the at risk register. National Mills Weekend, being the annual festival of milling heritage provides you with a fantastic opportunity to visit mills, many of which are not usually open to the public. We will be open on the 13th and 14th May, Kersey Mill . Our fundraising Summer Ball saw 130 guests revel and enjoy a beautiful summers evening. Delicious food was served, great music and above all a thrilling auction raising much needed funds towards Phase 2 of the restoration. Thank you to all those people from the local community for supporting the event. The year 2016 ended with Santa’s Workshop attracting over 1000 visitors from near and far. This was absolutely phenomenal. This year we saw groups of disabled & disadvantaged children. One group of deaf children from The Ipswich Children’s Deaf Society where guided through their magical experience with an interpreter who was signing for them . They had a special treat as Cobwebs of Elmsett supplied two beautiful reindeers and donkeys for the children to see. We really must mention the wonderful support with Santa’s Workshop from all those from the community: All Seasons Marquees, Cobwebs of Elmsett, Glass & Craft, Nestle, Graham Fuller, Tracey & Jasmine Alexander, Rachel, Emma & Sophie Knock, Mabel Frost, Katie Fox, Elana Muncey, Catherine Hood, Jordana Leeks, Shakira Winfield, Ky-anna Cook, Chloe & Olivia Davies, Laura Flockheart, Lucy & Beth Maskell, Melissa Whadcoat, Mia Kirk, Poppy Bennet, Georgia Pooley, George, Steve & Alison de Lara-Bell, Chris Chaplin Gary Barnes and Bill Griffiths. We would like to thank everyone who has helped and supported us throughout the year and wish you all a very happy healthy and prosperous New Year.

With 4 of the 5 wettest years on record happening since the year 2000 it seems that rainy days are here to stay. ‘Languages Taster Session’ at the University of Essex, Colchester In November three of our Year 10 students visited Essex University Languages Dept. for a Languages Taster Session. Students from many other schools across Essex and South Suffolk also attended this event. They had the choice to study two of either Russian, Italian or Chinese. Each taster session lasted approximately 30 minutes so students could gain a brief understanding of and practice using their chosen language. The evening finished with a summary of each session and a brief talk from Claudia Nehmzow (Senior Lecturer at the University), pictured below with the HHS students.

German Conference On Saturday 19th November 2016, a group of students attended a German Conference at Farlingaye High School in Woodbridge. The day consisted of many talks about what German can do for you later on in life and 3 workshops. We had a ‘Funny Compound Nouns’ workshop, a ‘German Music’ workshop and a ‘Poetry’ workshop. The Conference was hosted by the Languages Teacher of the Year 2016, Mrs S. Green (from Farlingaye) and it was supported by the Goethe Institut. It definitely gave us an insight into how it would benefit us and what it would be like to study German through College and University. (Written by Jess Johnson 10M)

Hadleigh Harmony meets Hadleigh Choral On Saturday 10th December, ‘Hadleigh Harmony’, the school choir, joined the Hadleigh Choral Society for an evening of Christmas carols. The school choir performed ‘Jingle Bells’ and their new school single - ‘This Christmas’, written by Mr Betts. Talking about the concert, he said “We were very pleased to be part of it and to share our new Christmas single with more people. I was especially proud of GCSE musician Isabel Gibbons who sang the first verse of ‘Once in Royal David’s City” beautifully.” Isabel said, “It was a very good carol service and it was nice to see the audience participating in the songs. Singing a solo was a great opportunity for me to build my confidence.” We hope to continue singing with the Choral Society, and revisit them next Christmas for another evening of music. Mr Quinn, one of the guests for the evening, wrote to the school following the event…. ‘May I offer my congratulations to Mr. Betts, the staff and pupils of ‘Hadleigh Harmony’ for their contribution to the joint carol concert with Hadleigh Choral Society at the URC last Saturday. The school choir was polished, enthusiastic and charming. The vivacity and energy of their singing was genuinely infectious and was received with real pleasure by the audience. Again, they were wonderful ambassadors for their school.’

Christmas Concert Time On Monday 19th December, the school hosted its annual Christmas Concert at the Hadleigh United Reformed Church. The Concert featured: Flute Choir, Orchestra, String Group, ‘Give it a Go’ Group, ‘Hadleigh Harmony’ Choir, Ukulele Heroes, Cast of ‘Cinderella in Wonderland’, GCSE Musicians and many more. Thank you to everyone who attended and who participated to a great evening of good music. Wear your Christmas jumper with pride On Friday 16th December, Hadleigh High School held a non-uniform day to raise funds for the ‘Save the Children’Christmas Jumper Appeal’ and to provide the Music Department with some funding towards the construction of the school’s ‘Busk Stop’. For a £1 donation, students wore non-uniform for the day, some in Christmas Jumpers! 32

Christmas Lunchtime fun On Thursday 15th December the school canteen held its Christmas Lunch. Vegetarian options were available alongside turkey, chipolatas and roast vegetables, served by the hard working kitchen staff – assisted by some colourfully clad members of the teaching staff! Christmas music played in the background, whilst children and staff ate their meals, pulled crackers and wore silly hats. It was a delicious meal with a lovely, festive atmosphere. Thank you to the kitchen staff for an excellent meal.

Exams, exams and more exams… Recently the ‘Silence: Examination no entry’ signs have been up around the school, warning students that the Year 11s are completing their mock exams. There is particular significance behind this as it is the first time such mocks have been taken under the new GCSE system. Year 10 students will be taking an English Language mock in January.

Hadleigh High School’s Single goes viral The school choir ‘Hadleigh Harmony’ have released their very own Christmas single. Titled ‘This Christmas’, the brand new song written by the Head of Music - Mr Betts- was performed by the choir and recorded to be sold online. We are charging just £1 (or more, a donation of your choice) at https://hadleighmusic.bandcamp.com/releases and all of the money raised will go towards the Busk Stop Project.

Year 7 Shoe Boxes Christmas is a time for giving, sharing and good food! With this in mind, the Year 7 Council had been discussing ideas on how to bring happiness to people that need it most. And, these people are the older members of Hadleigh. The school teamed up with Magdalen House in support of people with dementia that have no family to support them for Christmas. Year 7 helped these people by giving them shoe boxes with gifts, sweets, photos and many more small gifts. Over a couple of weeks before Christmas, Year 7 students had been bringing one item each to give to someone else in need and these Shoe Boxes were delivered to Magdalen House in time for Christmas Day.

Cross Country On Saturday 3rd December at Culford School, the second round of the Suffolk Cross Country trials took place. Many Hadleigh students took part and 16 will be taken by Mr. Davy to the next and final round, which is at Woodbridge School on 12th January. If a student has an average of finishing in the top 15 in all of the three trial races they have a very good chance of being selected for the Suffolk Cross Country team. Those selected for the team will be able to take part in the East of England race in which the county teams from across East Anglia will compete, if they do well in that race they will be able to compete in the All England race which is made up of runners from across England.

German Film/Biscuits treat On Wednesday 14th December, KS4 students gathered for some festive German treats and a film. The multi award winning film “Goodbye Lenin” proved to be a popular choice and students were interested to learn more about the social and political issues of one of the major events in modern European history – the collapse of the Berlin Wall. The film took a heart-warming look at how life had been in the former DDR and the rapid changes which occurred with the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Tasty accompaniments of a selection of German Christmas biscuits - Lebkuchen, Pfeffernüsse, Spekulatius, Aprikosenherzen with some alcohol free Glühwein all went down very well and students enjoyed the festive flavours.

News from the Food Tech Department Prior to Christmas parents would have seen the Christmas Cooking products coming home. The students were set a challenge to make a batch of biscuits, mince pies or make and decorate a yule log. Some went the extra mile and made and decorated some wonderful products - a special mention to the 4 Year 8 boys who even made a full Christmas dinner between themselves and ate it all before they went home! I would like to thank all staff that have helped me out in the department over

the last few weeks with a special mention to my 2 technicians, Mrs Simmons and Mrs Chinnery, who have been absolute stars. (Mrs Atkins, Food Tech Department)

Conservation Area This year we have seen some spectacular autumn colours as leaves turn through various shades of reds and yellows before leaf fall. The school grounds and the Conservation Area have shared in this wonderful display of changing colours. In addition, native trees and shrubs seem to be carrying an abundance of berries which are a food source for some species of birds and

H H B B mammals. Hawthorn Bugs Hotel The Hawthorn, Guelder Rose and Elder which we have planted in the Conservation Area are particularly good as a source of berries. Habitat is an important consideration for all forms of wildlife. Bug hotels made by our pupils provide shelter for all kinds of invertebrates. We still hope to attract a hedgehog to the Conservation Area and we have created a large heap of logs, twigs and leaves that would be a suitable place for a hedgehog

Poetry Corner Song of the Litter-Pickers King Guthrum was a Viking, he lived in Hadleigh when there wasn't any litter, they didn't have it then. In Rowland Tayler's Hadleigh there were no litter bins, no plastic bags, no cigarettes, no cartons, cans or tins. But now there's lots of litter, you see it every day. We litter-pickers volunteer to clear it all away. We wear our high-viz jackets, and armed with pick and sack we root out all the litter from every place it's at.

Rise up good folk of Hadleigh! The litter mustn't win. So pick it up or take it home or pop it in a bin. Let's rid the streets of litter wherever it is found so Hadleigh will become, once more, our lovely Tidy Town!

Been watching your waistline this Xmas..?

We are bombarded by clever advertising everywhere we go and subconsciously respond to it, especially when it’s food related. This is never more apparent than at Christmas. Here’s some simple tricks to avoid over-eating subconsciously: • Use smaller plates and serving utensils. • You’ll drink less in a tall slim glass instead of a chunky one. • Eat at the table whenever possible - eating while watching TV means we eat 40% more! • Put all leftovers away in the fridge and don't have a box of chocs nearby while you're watching TV – they will get eaten purely out of habit! • Save some for later - you don’t have to try everything at once and you’ll enjoy it more. By being aware of these things you will naturally eat less without feeling deprived. Allow yourself to enjoy your food – but stop eating as soon as you’re satisfied – it takes 20 minutes for the brain to register that you’re full so take a breather before having more pudding! Cambridge Weight Plan has recently launched 2 fabulous new products – Thai Style Chicken Curry to add to our “real food” range and a delicious Apple and Strawberry Yoghurt coated bar – both contain around 200 calories and 2533% of your daily nutritional needs. If 2017 arrives and you’ve still got some excess weight to lose why not try Cambridge Weight Plan to retrain your eating habits for a healthy New Year..! Cambridge Weight Plan (now in its 33rd year) has 6 steps designed to enable you to lose weight, and shows you how to make long-term changes to maintain a slim and healthy life. Average weight loss is a stone a month*. Research has proven that dieters are more successful with support. Accredited Cambridge Weight Plan Consultant Val Lord has 8 years’ experience. SKy Watch Earth at Perihelion

by Neil Norman

It's surprising the amount of people whom believe he Earth to have a perfectly circular orbit about the Sun, but this is far from true: in fact, no planet in the solar system has a perfect circular orbit. The Earth actually has a elliptical orbit and this is measured in orbital elements as its eccentricity. An object with an eccentricity value of O, is in a perfectly circular orbit. Saturn's moon Triton has an eccentricity around its parent planet of 0.00002, virtually circular, but not quite. The Earth has a value around the Sun of 0.0167 today which is nearly circular. This figure can deviate from 0.0034 to 0.058 over time due to the gravitational attractions of the planets pulling and pushing Earth in its orbit. Because of the elliptical nature of our orbit we have 2 points along it, one is perihelion, or closest point to the Sun and the other, Aphelion or farthest point away from the Sun. Our Earth reaches perihelion each year in January (this year is January 4th at 14:18 pm) when we will be 147.100.997 km from the Sun and Aphelion (always in July each year) takes place on the 3rd of July at 20.11 pm, at a distance of 152,092,503 km. Now the eagle-eyed ones amongst you will think I have put these dates around the wrong way. How can the closest point to the Sun occur in January when we are usually having snow and when we are farthest away we've usually enjoying temperatures in the high 20's? The very basic answer to that is the perihelion point occurs 2 weeks past the Winter solstice (21 December) and aphelion occurs 12 days past the Summer solstice (21 June), meaning that the Earth axial tilt is virtually at its maximum each time. For us to experience global seasons, the Earth must alternate between facing towards the Sun and facing away from the Sun, the 2 points between are what we know as the Autumnal and Spring equinoxes. These equinoxes are the point our where the Earth is upright or perpendicular in its orbit so we can quickly zip through a year: (in the northern hemisphere) Spring the Earth is upright in its orbit day and night length is equal, after this date the Earth tips 'forward' until it reaches maximum tilt of 23.5 deg on June 21st, the days are longer and warmer, nights are short. From June till September 21st (Autumn equinox) when the Earth is upright again resulting in equal lengths of day and night, after this, we tip backwards reaching maximum 23.5 tilt on December 21st meaning long nights and short days. The distance from the Sun effects the temperature on Earth only very sightly, it's the season we are in that affects our temperature, Summer means the solar radiation is at its maximum over the land as the Sun is 61 deg high in the Sky, where as in the Winter the Sun only reaches 14 deg above the horizon meaning far less radiation from the Sun over land. That's the very basics of the perihelion/aphelion and seasons, global warming comes in to the equation soon after, but that's another story for another day! Until next time, Clear skies! Neil Norman. Hadleigh and District Gardening Club

Our meeting Monday December 12th - Our annual quiz was held last time out and an enjoyable occasion was had by all. Missing letters, picture ID, plant ID, Linda's world famous feely bags and music were the rounds tackled, all with a gardening theme. Some inventive questions were posed, including asking all to identify what programme the singing duo of 'Whispering Grass' starred in during the 1970's. Most got the answer (It Ain't Half Hot Mum), but no one took up the offer of an extra point to continue singing the song after the clip had stopped! The highest point scorers over the year for our monthly competitions were announced, with Julia Wild taking first prize. She is pictured in the centre of the photo along with runners up Kate Banks and Margaret Jeffery. Plenty of festive food was provided, and a big thank you to my fellow committee members for helping to make the event a success. Our next meeting - Monday 9th January 2017 - Next up to kick off our programme for 2017 we welcome Peter Miller from Kings Seeds who will be talking about growing from seed, with the theme being vegetables. Very timely for those of us that like to plan ahead and dream of the warmer weather to start the propagation process. As usual we meet in Hadleigh Town Hall at 7.30pm., members £1, non-members £3. The monthly competition for January is ‘A Bowl of Hyacinths’. Everyone is welcome! All the best for the new year, Andy Leeder, Chairman

Selection of Plants Available

Down to Earth ...with Dave Not a lot to do on the allotment and in the garden over Christmas and the New Year, but with some glorious weather during December it was a pleasure to be on the allotment just pottering about in the winter sunshine. At times I was the only person there. I did, as always, manage to find things to do. The old tired rhubarb was dug up, divided, and the best bits replanted. Various uneven paths tidied and levelled, compost heap topped up with horse manure form the stables, the asparagus bed was manured and the runner bean trench dug out ready for the addition of some compost to give the ever hungry runner bean plants a boost next year. Now is a good time to get any garden machinery like lawnmowers serviced to avoid any rush in the spring. Just in case we get any very sharp frosts it pays to lag outside taps, and if you have a watering lance, remove it from the hose, empty it and put it in the shed. A couple of years ago I forgot to do this and when I went to use the lance in the spring it had been frozen and split, totally ruined. If we do get a sharp frost keep off the grass. Have a good look around your garden for places where snails may be overwintering. They could be under or in pots that are not in use. A couple of snails disposed of now is damage prevented in the spring. Don't be squeamish, just dump them in a pot of salty water. On a recent evening visit to Anglesey Abbey near to Cambridge to see the illiuminated gardens, we were proudly told by one of the numerous volunteers, that he had been busy washing the white bark of the many silver birch trees planted there. A worthwhile exercise as they did look very pristine. We will be back there again in the spring to see the display of snowdrops and other spring bulbs. Whether we buy any to bring home is doubtful as nearly all the pots of specimen bulbs on sale are very expensive. On a recent trip to a garden centre we bought several new hellebore plants. This will save us possibly disturbing the sleeping hedgehog tucked up in his nest in the corner of the garden surrounded by the original hellebores that we were going to move. One job for a cold wet day is to sort through any left over seed packets, decide what did well, what failed, what to grow again, what to try for a change and what not to bother with. For me a lot less potatoes will be grown next year as they take up such a lot of space. My order to Kings seeds will be posted off over the next few days. That's all for this time, Dave

Could you make 2017 a year to help others? Ever thought of volunteering? Are you a parent? Do you work with young children? Could you spare a few hours each week to visit a family?

Have you answered yes? Have you considered becoming a Home-Start volunteer?

Home-Start South Suffolk & District is a local charity supporting families with young children across the South Suffolk & West Ipswich areas, by recruiting and training volunteers to visit these families in the family’s own homes. Volunteers support weekly, providing emotional and practical support; helping the family get out and about, listening to children reading, help with boundary setting, support with appointments, or just finding out what other services are available to them etc.

Volunteering is a great opportunity to explore your own individual skills and use your life experiences to help others. Accreditation is available for those who wish to use the experience to help in gaining employment.

Our next preparation course starts on Wednesday 18th January 9.30 – 2.30, thereafter every Wednesday until 15th March (excludes Wednesday 15th February).

Interested? Call Sarah or Fiona on 01473 822822 or email sarah@homestartsouthsuffolk.co.uk or fiona@homestartsouthsuffolk.co.uk

Dear Sir,

Having seen the work undertaken earlier this year to renew the footpath from the staff visitor/car park to the Council offices I was intrigued as to why the work was undertaken when a perfectly viable alternative existed. Simply using the existing footpath across the road bridge. In response to a Freedom of Information request I have been told that following a risk assessment which identified the possibility of "trips, slips and falls on uneven surface on a narrow path two people/buggies cannot pass" the work was put in hand. The Council considered both patch repairs and closing the footpath in favour of using the road bridge alternative. However their decision was to go ahead with the renewal option because “to stop the obvious route to the car park, for users of the car park and the general public was not considered as being a practicable solution and would have resulted in complaints hence the footpath was renewed.” The cost of the work was £5263.82. Against that cost I have some questions. Having parked their car and found their way to the Council offices do people really not know or cannot find their way back to the car park? Is the route across the road bridge significantly longer? Is it not possible for two people/buggies to pass using that route? I understand that a move to Endeavour House Ipswich is planned for 2017. Why renew the footpath with that change on the horizon? Considering some of the choices or decisions the Council have made to date to reduce costs, is the possibility of receiving complaints a valid reason for renewing the footpath? The Council are under pressure to reduce costs, I do not dispute that. However although £5263.82 may not be a large amount in their terms is it not expenditure that could have been avoided? Could the money not have been used elsewhere or saved for other priorities? This is a relatively minor issue against the overall picture. It cannot be changed but personally I do not believe the Council made the correct decision. Do other Hadleigh residents agree or have a different view? R. Southgate, Aldham Road

Dear Sir,

A suggestion for East House - Last month my wife and I had a short break in the Lincolnshire market town of Horncastle, which struck us as being very much like Hadleigh. It is an old market town with a long and interesting history. It is about midway between the larger centres of Lincoln and Boston: it has a good range of independent shops, two small supermarkets, library, schools and a handful of pubs. The main difference from Hadleigh is that it has a very comfortable hotel, a much extended and modernised coaching inn, where we stayed. Its two meeting rooms were busy all the time we were there, providing a venue for local societies, small conferences and a Persian carpet sale. It was well patronised by guests, both for leisure like ourselves, and business, and generally as a place where local people could pop in for a shopping-break and perhaps a meal. It struck us that in providing all of the above, plus a place to act as a centre for visiting the surrounding areas (much quieter than Boston and Lincoln, and certainly cheaper than the latter), it meant that the hotel guest had an opportunity to get the feel of the town and look around, not just a quick in-andout visit. Hadleigh sorely lacks a choice of hotels, people pass through, some stay in Long Melford, Lavenham and Ipswich. Wouldn’t East House provide just such a facility in the centre of the town, if it were re-developed as a small hotel, perhaps a ‘boutique hotel’, such as are currently fashionable. It needn’t be too pricey or up-market. I’m sure that with the current buoyancy of the hospitality business, a developer shouldn’t be too hard to attract. All this requires is a positive attitude from Babergh DC and the Town Council, or would that be too much to hope for? Yours faithfully, James & Barbara Dent

Dear Sir,

It was very disappointing to find that Babergh District Council saw fit to approve controversial plans to allow building of 14 dwellings on the ribbon on land to the north of Castle Road, Hadleigh. This approval was granted in spite of outright objection by the Town Council, a petition of over 100 signatures from local residents and the area not being in an area identified for housing development. Worse, all of the properties are to be of two or three storeys high while the nearby homes are only single storey bungalows. Genuine planning and community reasons were given for the rejection of the application but these were ignored by the planning committee. Hadleigh is already in line for hundreds of other new houses so it is questionable why such a site should be granted approval. Interestingly, the site was sold by Babergh in 2010 for a paltry sum - with, I believe, the clear understanding that development of the site was not feasible or permissible. However, following the surprising planning approval the site is now for sale by the current (fortunate) owner for the staggering sum of ÂŁ1.5 million pounds. I will leave readers to draw their own conclusions from this. Nick Webber, 15 Castle Road, Hadleigh

Dear Sir,

Hadleigh is currently a provisional member of the national walkers’ scheme “Walkers Are Welcomeâ€?. We are now working towards full membership so that the town can benefit from the many advantages offered to participants. Fortunately, the town already fulfils much of the criteria but one important aspect is the support and approval of its residents. To this end we will be collecting as many signatures as possible so that these can be submitted with the formal application. No further personal information is required only signatures. If we can achieve membership before the 1st March 2017 we stand to gain ÂŁ1,000 to promote the many walks in and around the town with improved signage plus literature for walkers. If you like the idea why not add your name to the many sign up boards in shops and businesses around the town? For details of the scheme and its potential advantages to Hadleigh visit https://walkersarewelcome.org.uk/ Hadleigh Town Council , Hadleigh Steering Committee

Profit from our Experience

Dear Sir,

Affordable Housing in Hadleigh Brett Works (ex Tesco) Site and Angel Court McCarthy & Stone have submitted a planning application for assisted living retirement homes, bungalows and other accommodation at the former Brett Works (ex Tesco) site. The developers do not wish to make provision for 35% affordable housing at the site, which is Babergh's planning policy and would amount to 22 dwellings. Instead they are considering paying a commuted sum to Babergh; this should, on the basis of Babergh's present policy, amount to ÂŁ451,632. McCarthy & Stone have offered ÂŁ15,828. Come on McCarthy & Stone: please support the people of Hadleigh and pay the full policy amount. If these 22 affordable homes are not to be provided at the Brett Works site, where can they be provided? Our local housing authority, which is also Babergh, has recently bought Angel Court from Suffolk County Council. So Babergh, why not insist on McCarthy & Stone paying the full planning policy commuted sum and apply it towards the provision of at least 22 affordable dwellings at the Angel Court site? Let's hear from you Babergh. Rickaby Shearly-Sanders

Dear Sir,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Keith Young for granting Hadleigh Town Council permission to erect the new council display cabinet on wall of M. W. Partridge & Co Ltd in George Street. This smart and eye-catching cabinet located in the town’s main focal point will allow for the display of news and advertisements which will be of interest to townsfolk and tourists alike. The Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project Update

The Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project has gone from strength to strength and as we enter 2017 we hope that we can continue to uncover amazing stories and honour the memory of the Hadleigh heroes. We welcome any information or artefacts that will help us to tell the stories, but probably the best thing we can find is a photograph. To date, we have found 29 photographs of men listed on the Hadleigh memorial, including a recently received photograph of Edmund Budd. Some are very poor quality, but some are amazing. If you have a photograph at home that you can share with us, then please get in touch.

GREAT WAR NEWS JANUARY 2017 Wed 10 Jan Quite a number of Hadleigh men are reported as home on leave. Writing to the headmaster of Bridge Street School one corporal in the Suffolks on the Somme front reports: “I hoped to have been home and given you a call before this, but it was not my luck to get leave during the Christmas holidays. Since the last big push we have not been idle. In the trench warfare which is constantly going on they [the Huns] are the losers.” (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Wed 17 Jan Again many men are named as home on leave. Also the reports show a time of consolidation as injures and recoveries are reported.

Wed 24 Jan A Hadleigh gunner on the Western Front says: “I have seen many things out here which will remain with me for life, and perhaps the most wonderful is a bombardment at night. Everything seems a chaos – the roaring guns, the horizon aflame with flashes, the thud of shells well rammed home, the shrieking of shells and all the rest of it forms an unforgettable roar.”

War Fronts in Winter

In this article we remember: Henry Edwin Barr - 22 January 1917 Despite the absence of high profile offensives through the winter of 1916/17, the Western Front was still a dangerous place to be, lives were still being lost, as with Henry ‘Harry’ Edwin Barr from Hadleigh. He was born in Hadleigh and went to Bridge Street School. In 1911 he was an assistant to his father who had a grocer’s shop at 77 High Street (now Hadleigh Pet Supplies) and was living across the road at 74 High Street, the Crown Inn where his grandfather was the landlord (this is now Andrews butchers). For reasons so far unknown Henry Barr later moved to London and was living in Harrow Road, from where he enlisted in the County of London Regiment early in the war. In June 1915 he arrived on the Western Front and in January 1916 was serving with the 1/9th Battalion known as the ‘Queen Victoria Rifles’. The photograph shown was handed in to the Hadleigh Thrift Shop and shows a soldier wearing the ‘Queen Victoria Rifles’ cap badge and so could possibly be Henry. If you can confirm or deny this then please let us know. On 1 July 1916 Henry’s battalion took part in a major offensive just north of the Somme battlefield around the town of Gommecourt. This was a diversionary attack to draw German attention away from the main Somme battlefield. However, like the Somme, the action at Gommecourt did not go well and the battalion suffered heavy losses. In September the Battalion moved south to Carnoy and Fricourt and at the end of October moved closer to the Belgium border at Neuve Chapelle where they spent Christmas. In midJanuary 1917 the war diary records; “Battalion in trenches and holding Posts in old German front line. Posts heavily shelled and 1 post raided by enemy on two occasions. Considerable loss caused to our garrisons.” Among the casualties was Corporal Henry Edwin Barr. He is buried at the Merville Communal Cemetery Extension and is remembered on the Hadleigh Memorial. A number of Hadleigh men served much of their war time service in the comparative quiet of the Macedonian Front. This ‘front’ around the Greek town of Salonika was created in the autumn of 1915 when there was an attempt to aid Serbia after Bulgaria had taken sides with Austria-Hungry and Germany. In particular the 1st Suffolks which included Hadleigh men had moved to Salonika from the Western Front in November 1915. Those Hadleigh men known to be at Salonika with the 1st Suffolks in January 1917 included Private William Chapman who worked in the cocoa mat factory at Brett Works, he left a wife and children at 1 Calais Street. During 1916 he spent a spell in hospital in Malta suffering from fever. Also at Salonika was Private Ernest Edward Corder from George Street who was a mat weaver and left a wife and daughter at home and Private Albert Seager from Benton Street. Private Charles Cook who was a butcher from Bridge Street and who was with the Royal Fusiliers and spent his time slaughtering his battalion’s daily supply of sheep and goats. Also Private William John Leeks from 2 The Green was there with the Royal Army Service Corps. The 1/5th Suffolks with many Hadleigh men had spent a comparative quiet year in Egypt but had their training stepped up in January ready for action in 1917. The battalion history records the route march training and makes particular mention of Hadleigh man Sergeant Fred Foster; “One remembers many agonising moments spent removing boots on return to camp and how many a blister was burst under the eye of Sergt Foster and his staff of bearers.” After the war Fred was a renowned local plumber and fireman. Friday 13th January ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS (2016) 15

Fans of the TV programmes will need no introduction to the zany world of Edna and Patsey. They are still oozing charm and glamour, living the high life they are accustomed to for shopping , drinking and clubbing their way round London's hotspots .Written by Jennifer Saunders the couple were blamed for a major incident at a fashionable launch party and were the victims of a media storm which resulted in the pair being relentlessly pursued whenever they moved ! All the original TV cast are here : from June Whitfield as mother, Julia Sawalha as Saffy, and Jane Horrocks as Bubble. Need we say more except prepare to party tonight !

Friday 27th January SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS (2016) PG

Although Arthur Ransome wrote the book during the year's 1929/1930, the cinematic version today remains true to the original . Set in 1935 the storyline, captivating dialogue and plot are compelling as you meet the Walker family at their country home on a sail boat called Swallow. It is the children who carry the movie as Arthur Ransome's story Is about rivalry among six children and their dream of camping on their own on a remote island in the lake district . When at last the children were given permission , it is not long before they encounter a mysterious man on a houseboat who accuses them of a crime they they did not commit. The film has an all British cast, with lead parts played by Virginia McKenna and Ronald Fraser. We invite you all to journey back in time and sample the pleasures of this enchanting much loved story. Admission to our films is £ 3.50 for adults and £ 2.50 for an accompanied child.

Carol Service

Letter www.layham.org from Layham Are you new to Layham?

If you have just moved to the village and would like to know more about it, please visit our website www.layham.org, where you can download a Welcome Booklet. However, if you do not have a computer and printer and would prefer a hard copy of the booklet, please contact Jane Cryer, Parish Clerk, on 07920 713940.

Parish Council The main matters discussed at the Parish Council meeting on 30 November 2016 were: • Public Forum - The three parishioners present explained that they wished to give their views on the application for outline planning permission to erect a detached dwelling and garage at The Cottage (west of Pear Tree Cottage) in Upper Street and had registered their objections with Babergh. Their main concerns were the risk of additional flooding in Water Lane, additional traffic at what was already a dangerous junction, and additional noise and disturbance. The Chairman explained that the Parish Council had no power to decide whether or not a planning application should be approved, but would submit its observations and comments which would be taken into consideration by Babergh. It was noted that this was an outline planning application only. Councillor Ward said he would discuss the issues with the Planning Officer and request a site visit. • Babergh District Council report - Babergh and Mid Suffolk would be launching a new, more user-friendly website in the new year; the draft site could be accessed via a link from the current one so that people could comment before it was finalised. The Suffolk Waste Partnership had launched a campaign to highlight the importance of recycling and a leaflet had been sent to every household containing guidance on what could and could not be recycled. Mel Harvey had been appointed as Babergh’s new Communities Officer for the Lower Brett area and was keen to visit parishes to establish communication and build relationships; the Clerk would invite her to the January meeting. • Suffolk County Council report - Councillor Jones said the process of budget planning had now begun; SCC would need to make savings of £46 million in 2017-18. At a recent meeting with the Police & Crime Commissioner, Councillor Jones had said he was keen to trial automatic number plate recognition cameras to combat speeding. • Priorities - It was agreed that a key priority for the coming year should be an additional defibrillator for Brett Green, as it had the greatest concentration of parishioners. Consideration would be given in the future to a further defibrillator for Lower Layham. Another key priority was accident prevention; Councillor Jones said he would be happy to add Layham to the list for a mobile speed sign and asked the PC to give some thought to the most appropriate location. • Commemoration of the end of WW1 - The Chairman proposed that a small working group of parishioners should be created to consider planning an event for November 2018; this was agreed.

Goal nets

Now that the seeded areas around the goals have grown it is time to put a net back on one of the posts. We hope everyone will understand that studs should not be used on the artificiallyturfed goal mouth. Please alert your children if they are footballers. The photo above shows Caspar Thorp defending goal against Jack Bewsher. The second goal is being left without a net until we have made some impression on the rabbit population. See below.

Rabbit culling

If you are familiar with the playing field you will know that the rabbit population is digging all over the grass – and particularly around the artificial grass at the goal at the far end of the field. In the New Year there will be a culling exercise when a volunteer will be shooting at dawn or dusk on the field. When he is at work pallets will be used to block the gates and notices will be clearly displayed: NO THOROUGHFARE RABBIT SHOOTING If you use the field when it is dusk please approach with your dog on a lead in order to ensure it does not wriggle through somewhere and on to the field. Thank you.

Layham Local History Group

The group continues to flourish and is getting very near to completing the catalogue of our archive. We all enjoyed a meeting with Nick Hazell who has worked hard to build the detail of his family tree and shared his findings with us. He was particularly interested to identify three generations of his family who lived in the village. We are sorry that, due to pressure of work, Ian Gooding has found it necessary to stand down as our Archivist. We thank him for the help he gave as we were struggling to get going. We are very pleased that Charlotte Britton has taken on responsibility for the archive from the New Year. If you come across any old photographs or documents relating to the life of the village in times past please contact Charlotte on charlottepbritton@gmail.com or phone 823352.

A Festival of Layham Marriages

Plans are beginning to be made for an exhibition in St Andrew’s Church of wedding photographs of couples who have been married there. Previous publicity on these pages and some detective work has tracked down 65 photographs so far. The latest photograph provided is of the marriage of Julie Freeman to Dean Jones on 3 June 1995. The Freeman family lived in Watermill Close for some years before moving to Hadleigh. In addition to Julie and Dean the photograph includes Julie’s sister Wendy, mother Yvonne and late father Tony. Can you put us into contact with any of the following couples – all of whom were married in Layham during the ten tears 1998 - 2008? 13.9.2008Rebecca Williamson and David Schindler 7.8.2004 Mark Robson and Lisa Brown 6.9.2003 Andrew Richardson and Melanie Stroud 1.6.2002 Barry Wells and Emma Potter 9.6.2001 Philip Longman and Emma Baldwin

Have you got your wedding dress stored in the loft? If so, would you consider lending it to us for a few days to be part of the exhibition? You don’t have to have been married in Layham to help with this part of the exhibition. Use the same contact above if you can help. Thank you.

Hadleigh Bowling Club

The club ended our social events for 2016 with a sell-out Christmas Draw and Supper on the 9 December. It was a great night out, particularly for those lucky enough to take away one of the great prizes on offer. Preparations are already in hand for our Valentines Dinner on the 11 February 2017 with booking forms already being received. The committee have already published the 2017 events diary which includes a Barbeque, Summer Buffet, Fish and Chip Supper and Strawberry Tea as well as two coffee mornings one of which will incorporate the plant sale. We will be offering an open weekend where potential new members are welcome to come and try their hand without obligation. That is scheduled for the weekend of the 29 and 30 April and we will give more details nearer the date. The indoor “Short Mat” season is well under way and we are delighted to welcome some new members who hopefully will continue by extending their membership to outdoor as well. We already have two new members signed up for next outdoor season Our two league teams, Spinners and Weavers have certainly had a better season so far with the Weavers currently in 5th place having won 6 and lost 3 matches. The Spinners are in 7th place having won 4 and lost 5 matches, however both teams are within touching distance of the team currently in 3rd place. Although the outdoor season seems a good way off at this time, we are delighted to report that young Kyle Leeks has been selected to attend trials for the Bowls England under 18 national team along with Liam Harris, also of Suffolk, who won 2016 under 18 national final. It has been an exceptional year for the Club and we wish all our members a very Happy New Year and look forward to the challengers for 2017.

Lady Vets Section of Stoke by Nayland GC

Monday 12th December saw the Lady Vets section of Stoke by Nayland invite the men's section to their annual 13 hole mixed Greensomes Invitational match. The shotgun start was slightly delayed due to the fog, but once things got going there was plenty of banter between the members of the teams. Over 40 people sat down to the Christmas Lunch enjoying entertainment by Vets Lady Captain Diana Harris. The overall winners of the day happened to be Lady Vets Captain and Seniors Captain Norman Davidson!!! A lovely day enjoyed by all. Say Hello, Wave Goodbye – Cycling Committee News

There was a record turnout at Hadleigh Cycling Club’s AGM when the Committee thanked those standing down and welcomed new members. The Committee thanked departing Chairman Adam Chamberlain for all his efforts to steer the Club over the last couple of years. Under his guidance the Club has thrived and developed. And he has led from the front, taking on cycling disciplines and representing the Club successfully at numerous events. Adam will continue to coach the Juniors in 2017 along with Simon King, Martin Nichols, Perrie Higgs and Gale Pryor. The Committee believes that it is essential to grow this area and has invited Molly Cutmore and Ryan Gooderham to represent the Juniors. Molly and Ryan are excellent young cyclists and regularly ride in local and regional events. The Committee acknowledged the huge part that Richard Holdaway has played over the last few years, especially in the creation and delivery of the Club’s sportive, the Gayford Flyer. Richard is standing down due to work commitments. Mike Motteram has taken on the role of Chairman and the Committee has been strengthened by the addition of Farhad Abdly and Rickaby ShearlySanders. Mike stressed “the importance of continuity and thanked the Secretary, Simon King and Treasurer, Benson Ho for their hard work to ensure the Club runs effectively and maintains the high profile of cycling in Hadleigh. “We’re already looking to encourage new riders in the Spring with Chris Heron planning shorter, slower rides. Kate Billingham, Gale Pryor and Lucy Jay will again be working with women who want to take up riding.” Phil Barnes (Time Trials), Lucy Jay (Parents Rep) and Sue Calver (Welfare) have all agreed to continue on the Committee. For more information on the Club visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.org or email or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Hadleigh Table Tennis - Cup Success

Both Hadleigh teams had success in the 1st Round of the Ipswich League’s Handicap Cup competition. Division 3 side, Hadleigh Owls, entertained Britannia Eagles from Division 1, and won a comfortable match by 316 points to 270. In the 2nd round they will play away to Ipswich Sports Club “B”, the tie due to take place after Christmas. Division 1 side, Hadleigh “A”, triumphed over Britannia Ravens of the Premier Division but only by a solitary point, 219 to 218. They now have a 2nd round game away to rivals, Wherstead Tornadoes, also of Division 1. Once again a tight match looks inevitable. Both sides are performing well in their League games and are comfortably placed in the mid-table of their respective Divisions. The “Owls” start off after the Christmas break without one of their experienced players but hopefully it will not affect their current standing in Division 3. A further update will be given in the next Community News.

Stoke by Nayland yuletide celebrations!

Stoke ladies enjoyed two Christmas golfing and lunch events. The weekend Yuletide event took place on Sunday 4th of December and got off to a great start with 21 ladies taking part. It was an 18 hole competition with a shotgun start on the Gainsborough Course, followed by a lunch and music. Winners were:- 1st Mandy Byham and Suzanne Shaw-Smith; 2nd Lesley Garnett and Fran Chandler; Nearest the Pin were:- Fran Chandler and Lesley Hitchcock. On Thursday 8th December the second of the Yuletide festivities took place with 52 ladies going out to play 9 holes on the Gainsborough Course half on the front 9 and half on the back 9. A lovely lunch followed with several ladies who are social members joining in. The Committee ladies entertained with their interpretation of Cinderella, causing much laughter. Winners of the front 9 were:- 1st Gill Dutton and Debbie Howlett; 2nd Sue Spittlehouse and Nora Hutchinson; 3rd Angela Cudmore and Gwen Broadhead. Back 9 were:- 1st Edel Rew and Katrina Bygrave; 2nd Sue Gregory and Corinne Jackson; 3rd Fran Chandler and Jane Golding. Nearest the pin were:- Debbie Howlett and Mal Went. A special gift was presented to Anne Soar as she had recently be made an Honorary Member of Stoke by Nayland Golf and Leisure. She was a founder member of the club and for over 20 years of her time playing in many of the clubs teams amongst other things. Both days were a great success!

Hole in one on a Par Four!

On Tuesday 29th November Stoke by Nayland Professional Chris Payne was playing a coaching round of golf, with students from the Westwood School, as part of his new role as a tutor at the School. He teed up on the Gainsborough Par 4 8th Hole, Stroke Index 6, using his Callaway Big Bertha Driver. The students and fellow tutor, Ian Mckay, saw the ball pitch, bounce and roll but could not see the ball as the green is not visible from the tee. On approaching the green they could see a white dot, which they assumed was the ball but no, it was a lump of frost, and the ball was found in the hole! A very unlikely scenario - a hole in one on a Par 4 hole....well done Chris.

Hadleigh United Football Club

Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk Hadleigh Reserves make the headlines this month by reaching the semi-final of the Suffolk Senior Reserves Cup. Hadleigh clinched their place in the semifinal by beating Wenhaston in a close match by three goals to two on a wet afternoon at the Millfield. The Reserves have also reached the semi-final of the Chell Trophy where they will travel to Walsham in early February. In the league our Reserves gave a great performance to share the spoils against league leaders Witham with Aiden Bignell on target for us. The first team lost narrowly against highly placed Stanway but did extremely well to draw at Kirkley and Pakefield with the Lowestoft based team equalising with a disputed penalty kick in the second half. Our Thurlow Nunn Youth Team are having a good season despite a couple of defeats in recent weeks. Whitton United came out on top by three goals to two while Woodbridge inflicted a defeat by four goals after we had received a red card in the first half. All of us involved with the football club send New Years greetings to all our loyal supporters. Prizewinners in the latest monthly draw were Margaret Hall and Mervyn Bignell. Ground Improvement winner was Rolf Beggerow. Both draws were made by Tony Charles at the Wenhaston match. Hadleigh United Fixtures First team fixtures for January begin on Monday 2nd at Newmarket. Saturday 7th sees us at Yarmouth while Saturday 14th brings Walsham to the Millfield. Saturday 21st means a short trip to Wivenhoe while a much longer journey on Saturday 28th takes us to Godmanchester. That makes it four away matches in a month. The Reserves are at home to Cornard on Saturday 7th. A trip to Woodbridge follows on Saturday 14th before we go to Long Melford on Wednesday 18th. Woodbridge come to Hadleigh on Saturday 21st before the Reserves end a busy month at home to Saffron Walden on Saturday 28th. Our Thurlow Nunn youth team go to Framlingham on Thursday 12th before a home game against Stowmarket on Wednesday 18th. The month ends at Felixstowe on Thursday 26th. Any alterations will be on the club website.

New Lease for Hadleigh United Football Club

Following the approach made to Hadleigh United Football Club and Hadleigh Town Council by Shared Access to erect a new telephone mast for Hadleigh at the Millfield the opportunity was taken to renew the Clubs lease on the ground nine years early. The new lease provides benefits and presents opportunities for the Club and additionally benefits all of Hadleigh: • It secures the Clubs occupation of Millfield Football Ground • It should enable the Club to be in a better position to obtain grant funding • Enables the Club to continue and expand its work in developing football in Hadleigh • Light pollution occasionally affecting residents in Benton Street should be reduced • Any adverse effect of floodlight scatter on traffic in Benton Street should be eliminated • Telecommunications services in Hadleigh should be improved.

THE WORKSHOP MAGDALEN ROAD

Standing Ovation for Alice Barlow

Alice Barlow received a standing ovation at a special reception to celebrate another year of county and national success by members of Newton Green Golf Club. The 18-yearold has swept all before her in Suffolk women’s golf. She also became the first winner of England Golf’s junior girl champion of champions’ trophy, as well as finishing seventh in the Telegraph BMW Junior Championship in Portugal. Alice was among both junior and senior golfers receiving congratulations from guest of honour, Suffolk Men’s Golf Union president Phil Platten. Newton’s moderate success for several decades at county level had seldom merited a special celebration – now it is four years in a row. The event was hosted by Ian Woodhead. During the evening club women’s captain Sally Cade paid tribute to the qualities of commitment, determination and effort that had contributed to the success of Alice Barlow, including winning Suffolk adult and junior titles at match and stroke play. She had also formed with Eloise Aldous an “awesome pair” as they regained the Suffolk Haskell Trophy. Club professional Tim Cooper reviewed the club’s success at junior level, including Alice Barlow, Ben Tatum and Harvey Watts winning the Suffolk team championship and going on to represent the county in the national final, where they finished seventh. On behalf of England Golf, he presented Watts with a certificate for a hole in one during the competition. Also present during the evening was the club’s Parks Trophy team which had never previously passed the first round, but reached the final. Meanwhile, six- handicapper Ben Tawell won the Dick Burn Eastern Region Golf Club Managers Association trophy, and Tim Cooper was runner up in the Suffolk PGA match play league, semi-finalist in the match play knock-out and third in the order of merit.
