Sparkle & Fizz a great success! Despite the snow, ice and freezing temperatures, Sparkle & Fizz, Hadleigh’s very own wedding, party, prom and fashion show, successfully went off with a bang on Saturday 3rd March. Over 150 people enjoyed a great day out and were treated to twenty exhibitors, showcasing some of the best services Hadleigh has to offer including hair and make-up, caterers, photographers, florists and milliners, as well as those offering discos, gift ideas and much more… Food and wine tastings, a glitter bar and prosecco bar all proved to be popular attractions, whilst Angel Delights set up a wonderful pop-up vintage café offering light lunches, teas and coffees and delicious cakes and pastries. Two fashion shows proved to be the main attraction, expertly staged and choreographed by Liz Wilson and featuring wedding, prom and party outfits for the coming season plus some designer gems. The event also gave visitors the opportunity to explore the beautiful Town Hall complex and to see what an amazing venue it makes. Liz, Helen & Stuart would like to thank all those who kindly supported the event and helped us raise nearly £1000 for local charities.

Community News

18800 Community News Magazines are delivered during the first week of each month to homes and businesses in Hadleigh, Sudbury, Bildeston, Boxford, Capel St Mary, Chelsworth, Milden, Edwardstone, Groton, Hitcham, Kersey, Monks Eleigh, Long Melford, Whatfield, Elmsett, Hintlesham, Polstead, Lavenham, Newton Green & Raydon We warmly welcome all your contributions of articles, letters, sports reports, events and photographs, just email or send to the address below and it will appear in the next issue.

In this issue, Jane Richardson completes her The Hadleigh Historian trilogy of articles concerning Hadleigh during the The Hadleigh Historian Issue 45 April - May 2018 Price £3 1950’s, by recalling the social life of her childhood. Sundays were for attending church and Sunday school: at first with the Methodists in George Street and later with the ‘Congs’ in Market Place. During the week, membership of the Brownies led on to the Girl Guides, who joined other town organisations on Remembrance Sunday to parade along High Street to the War Memorial. On Saturday afternoons, the Palace Cinema was the venue for children’s films and the Pathe News, with another programme every evening except on Sundays. Am-Dram productions were very popular as were the Scout Gangs Shows, both of which received plenty of audience participation whether required or not. Children’s swings were on Gasworks Meadow by the Iron Bridge and it was here that travelling circuses, accompanied by fun fairs, would set up their shows. We meet a town full of characters like the British Legion standard bearer, the one-legged cyclist and the church organist who could not keep up with the congregation. Jane also remembers egg-and-spoon races along High Street, the boxes of Payne’s Fireworks that were the stalwart of Bonfire Night in back gardens all over town and much more. Jeff Ward will be known to you as one of the main contributors to ‘Hadleigh Great War Centenary Project’ published monthly in Hadleigh Community News. Here, he tells of Hadleigh boy Arthur Ramplin, who went to sea at an early age and travelled the world. On joining the crew of HMS Bombala in 1917, Arthurs fate was sealed and the story ends in a lonely sea battle fought in the South Atlantic against heavy odds. Not only has Jeff extensively researched Arthurs service records but has also located photographs of many ships on which he served. The lack of surviving records concerning Hadleigh’s workhouse in the Guildhall does not mean that we do not have the opportunity to meet the last governors and matrons overseeing the pauper inmates housed there. Documents familiar to family historians have been used to create minibiographies of five married couples between 1789 and 1835 who successfully put their charge to work on spinning woollen yarn, bread making and sack manufacturing. Samuel Kimmis (governor 1789-1812) ended his days in an almshouse at Bury St Edmunds; after her husband died in 1827, Ann Holland continued alone in charge at Hadleigh Guildhall for three years; and after the workhouse closed in 1835, governor Thomas Hair King, tried to continue a sack manufactory on the premises. Your letters, pictures and memories concerning Hadleigh in the recent past and articles relevant to the history of the town and its surrounding countryside are most welcome. Please contact: Sue Andrews, 17 Manor Road, Bildeston, Ipswich, Suffolk IP7 7BG (01449 740673) Available at Avis the Newsagent and Idler Bookshop in Hadleigh High Street and at Hollow Trees Farm Shop in Semer, still only £3.

We had 14 join us for March’s walk at Dedham. The weather was fine but some nifty footwork was required on the final stretch as the river was overflowing its banks and flooding the water meadows. Fortunately most of us finished with dry feet. For April’s walk on Saturday 14th we will catch the Sudbury bound bus at 0850 (Co-op side) and alight at Bower House Tye. We will then walk back to Hadleigh via Sprott’s Farm, Dollops Rockalls Farm, Newhouse Farm, Shelley, Waterhouse Farm, Layham Mill, Railway Walk and back into Hadleigh - a pleasant 7.8 mile walk. I’m told that Dollops is good for bluebells at this time of the year. We should be back in Hadleigh around 1 pm. Everyone is welcome, including very well behaved dogs (there are a number of fields of sheep to pass through). Strong shoes or preferably walking boots should be worn as the ground will be muddy and wet in some places at this time of the year. As usual, route maps can be requested from the web site. For further information about these walks go to www.hadleighwalkers.com, email us at hadleighwalkers@gmail.com or contact Mike Keeling on 01787 210104 or 07483 887658

Surviving Winter in Hadleigh (and surrounding villages)

Tim Allen & Son

As anticipated we had a run on thermal wear emergency needs during the early cold spell, which took up our stock of ladies thermal socks. A trip to Ipswich got it sorted, but it was sods law that our local supplier had a delivery of ladies thermal tights the following day! Blankets and wraps were also welcomed by the recipients. We were able to give some assistance to those who were struggling with heavy fuel bills. Our thanks must go out to Hadleigh Mobility for their support and attention in servicing and renewal of batteries to get one stranded scooterist mobile again, they were superb. We also helped to keep an emergency operator service up to date for the house bound. The panic alarms are still available to those who are eligible. Many who have a fob have commented on a feeling of confidence should an urgent need for assistance arise. We mention what we do as many who need help are reluctant to contact us, your confidentiality is assured. We wish to put on record our appreciation of the local groups and individuals that give us tangible support to operate. Thank you very much for your kindness. Established 1994 - Over 30 Years Experience

*Addendum (an excerpt from the Sunday Express) 25th February 2018. It is reported by “Intelligent Health” that there have been 33,464 avoidable deaths this winter, (Dec 1st to mid February 2018). It is predicted that this will rise to over 45000 by the end of March – the highest for 18years. Dr W. Bird, former director of health forecasting at the Met Office said, “This is a cold hazard that kills thousands of people each year, but because not all deaths occur at the same time it is often overlooked ”Professor James Goodwin of Age UK said “We have known about avoidable deaths for decades and every time it gets cold we have thousands more”.

World Book Day Due to the snow, we had to post-pone our World Book Day until our return to school after the unpredictable weather. All of the children really loved that they still got the chance to dress up as their favourite book characters and celebrate their love of reading. We also raised nearly £300 at our Book Fair on the only day we managed to open it! Mother’s Day Lunch This year, we invited our mums and nans to join our children for a very special Mother’s Day Lunch. The lunch was enjoyed by all, and will be a tradition for years to come. Better Together Better Together runs every Thursday from 9am-11am and is run by the Brett River & Cherry Blossom Children’s Centre. We welcome all families with an under 5 at home, come and see us in the school nursery and lovely garden area for a morning of fun! Hope to see you and your friends there! Ladybird Nursery Is your child 3 or 4 years old? Then come and join our Ladybird Nursery. We offer provision from 7.30am – 4.30pm. Please contact our School Office for more information.

The Hadleigh Branch of the Royal British Legion lost one of it’s longest serving and loyalist servants last month. Mr Keith Bartram sadly passed away. Keith, who originated from merseyside was brought to Suffolk by the RAF. He was posted to Wattisham in the early sixties and that is when he met and fell in love with local girl Carol. The two married and raised a family and Suffolk became Keith’s new home, although he never forgot his Liverpool roots. A member of the RBL for as long as anyone can remember, Keith was extremely proud of his 15 years of service with the RAF. In more recent years he took on the job of Branch Chairman, a role that he loved until his illness forced him to step down. Despite handing over the reins, Keith remained on the Branch Committee and his advice and support was invaluable. As one of the ‘elder statesmen’ of the Branch, Keith was held in high regard by everyone who knew him. Keith was determined to serve the RBL for as long as he could and despite his very poor health, he represented the Hadleigh Branch at the last Remembrance Day wreath laying ceremony and manned one of our Poppy Appeal Collection point in Morrisons. Keith will be missed by all who knew him and the Hadleigh RBL send their condolences to Carol and family at this difficult time. Keith’s funeral will be at Seven Hills Crematorium at 10:30hrs 11 Apr 18 followed by a wake in the Hadleigh RBL.

Diamond - Lites Majorettes We had our first competition on the 10th and 11th March, we won 9 trophies in total, various medals and came joint 3rd overall. We are very proud of the girls they danced brilliantly and this is an amazing start of our competition season. We have managed to buy 3 new dresses which were worn at the competition, this has been possible through various fundraising events and donations from local businesses/charities. We are very grateful for this and would like to say thank you to everyone, especially Kieron and Alice for the great light up event that raised so much and also to the Thrift Shop for their kind donation. If you think you would like to learn the skills of baton, mace, poms and flag twirling and dancing to the latest music whilst keeping fit, making new friends and having a complete blast then please feel free to check us out. We welcome boys and girls aged 5 and over (adults very welcome). We train at the Ansell centre Hadleigh on a Thursday night and Elmsett village hall on a Monday night. We are an equal opportunities group, all committee members and trainers are DBS checked, safeguard trained and all members fully insured. Pelvic and Women’s Health Physiotherapy – Fact File A pelvic and women’s health physiotherapist (otherwise known as pelvic, obstetric and gynaecological physiotherapist) specialises in treating women throughout their childbearing years and beyond. This can mean treating pregnancy related back and pelvic pain (during pregnancy or afterwards), pelvic floor muscle weakness and abdominal muscle separation after birth, pelvic floor muscle dysfunction at any time of life, prolapse, bladder and bowel control or function issues, pelvic issues relating to menopause, and pelvic pain at any stage in life. How can physiotherapy help women? Women are prone to particular conditions as a result of childbearing. 1 in 3 women have issues with bladder control at some point in their adult life, more than 50% of pregnant women experience significant back pain and 1 in 9 women suffer with chronic pelvic pain. Pelvic and women’s health physiotherapists have specialist knowledge and skills - making a diagnosis, using specialist treatment techniques and prescribing exercise programmes that consider the differences in the female body. Tell us about your experience in this field I started my career in 1997 in this field at the Royal Free, a large London teaching hospital. For 12 of those years I was the lead physiotherapist for women’s health, running one of the largest services in the country. I also work privately alongside some of my consultant colleagues in Harley Street, London. What do you find most rewarding in your work? I am passionate about my work, it makes an enormous difference to peoples’ quality of life. Some of my clients start their treatment having had debilitating pelvic pain for years. It is incredibly rewarding to hear how much physiotherapy changes someone’s pain or function, and what that has allowed them to do – whether it’s giving them the confidence to have another child, return to the work place, or simply return to an exercise class they like. Physiotherapy works! How can I find out more? Please see the Hadleigh Physiotherapy website at www.hadleighphysio.co.uk, or my personal website: www.helenforthphysio.com or feel free to call or email the clinic with any queries.

Hadleigh Cycling Junior Club 2018 The Junior Club is starting up again for the 2018 season. The sessions will run on Wednesday evenings (18:00-19:00) at Hadleigh Community Primary School. The first session will be on Wednesday, 18th April. Juniors can be from 4 years of age to 16. Children simply need to be able to ride their bikes unaided. The sesson cost is £3 for non-member and £2 for members. Simon King, the Club’s Secretary said, “We’ve got great coaches who have been trained to British Cycling standard. The sessions are fun and new riders are always welcomed.” Booking is recommended. Please contact Simon on 07738 686517 or simonjsking@hotmail.co.uk. We are looking forward to the Get Back on Your Bike sessions again for Ladies on Wednesday evenings in June and we are hoping to run short rides for those who don’t possess lycra or a road bike and just want to try social riding. The Gayford Flyer will take place on Sunday, 2nd September. After months of inclement weather, the official club rides are back on again. Riders are invited to gentle social rides starting at 8am from The George on Sundays, weather permitting. Adults and “capable children accompanied by an adult” are all welcome. The distance is around 25 miles. Check out our Facebook page. Visit www.hadleighcyclingclub.co.uk or connect with the club via Facebook: Hadleigh Cycling Club @HadleighCycling

Hadleigh Boxford Patient Participation Group Have you heard about Care Navigation? The role of the receptionist in our surgeries is evolving, changing and expanding. As part of the valuable work they do they will ensure that patients are directed to the right person for their particular need at the right time and the right place. This means our reception staff will not necessarily book everyone with a GP, but will recommend the most appropriate medical professional, which may include a practice nurse, a healthcare assistant or a pharmacist to name but a few. They may also use a comprehensive directory of information about services in the community as well as in the practice. These could include, for example, leisure and social community activities, befriending, carer respite, dementia support, benefits advice, employment support and sensory impairment services. This will help to reduce GP appointments, releasing about 5% of the demand for GP consultations, and will at the same time benefit patients by giving them a faster access to the right service, helping to improve quality of life for patients and carers alike. Receptionists acting as care navigators can ensure the patient is booked with the right person first time. It will be quicker for patients to get an appointment with the GP when needed and the receptionists will have the satisfaction of knowing that they are making a significant contribution to the success of the practice by helping patients to get the most appropriate treatment or advice. Sir William Aldous (1936 - 2018) It is with great sadness that we recently learnt of the passing of the RT Hon, Sir William Aldous (SP) QC, High Court Judge, Privy Counsellor. Willie, as he was known to his friends, was a warm and generous man, his equestrian pursuits were lifelong and passionate. He married Gillian Henson, main organiser of Stratford Hills Horse Trials until 2016 and sister of Bill Henson, the longstanding Land Rover Burghley Horse Trials Director. They have three children Emma, Richard and Nicola and many grandchildren. They both enjoyed a lifetime of equine related activities and later in life regularly followed the Essex & Suffolk Hunt on foot. Willie was educated at Harrow School after which he went to Trinity College Cambridge where he graduated with a Master of Arts (M.A.). His professional career followed an illustrious path. He was admitted to Inner Temple in 1960 entitled to practise as a barrister-at-law and was head of the barristers' chambers at 6 Pump Court, Temple from 1980 to 1988. He was member of the junior counsel at the department of Trade and Industry between 1972 and 1976. An appointment to Queen’s Counsel in 1976 followed and he became a High Court judge in 1988, a position he held until 1995. In 1995 Willie was both appointed to the Privy Council and appointed Chief Justice of Appeal. He retired from the bench in 2003 although he remained an arbitrator in intellectual property arbitrations and was a member of the Gibraltar Court of Appeal until 2013. Willie’s other much loved equestrian pursuit was hunting.

Ken’s SESAW News Suffolk & Essex Small Animal Welfare Reg charity no 1124029

No prizes for guessing who’s been out recently. Our little ambassador came home full of himself again after attending our Gift and Craft Fair at Whatfield last month. We received another warm welcome from the village and raised £860 for the animals. Kenny met lots of people who enjoyed the event including SESAW rescue dog, Billy the Whippet/Jack Russell cross with his new Foster family. This fifteen year old canine gentleman is finally getting all the love, walks and TLC a dog could desire. You can give and receive so much happiness when taking an older dog into your home. It may not be for as long as you would wish but it makes all the difference while it lasts, to you and them. Turning to the superior species, we have ex feral cats desperately looking for jobs as vermin exterminators. They need a warm place to sleep and a regular supply of food, a fit and able cat will work more efficiently that weak poorly cats. Mother says we can advise how to introduce working cats to your environment and support you should they become ill. Our next event is our Spring Sale which starts at 10am, 22nd April at The Old School, Long Melford, CO10 9DX. I dare say Kenny will be insufferable after attending and just hope little Lord Fauntleroy will stop prancing long enough to write next month’s news, instead of me, Ollie (the Black) Cat. Appeal for new bladder scanner at Ipswich Hospital My name is Jenny Skippen and I live at Elmsett. I am appealing for your support to raise money for a new bladder scanner for the gynaecology department at Ipswich Hospital. The present scanner is in America for a minimum of 6 months undergoing repairs. This obviously causes a lot of inconvenience for the staff as they have to spend much of their time trying to borrow one from other departments, and delaying diagnosis and treatment for the patients. A new scanner costs about £2500, and I have promised the department I will raise as much money as I can to go towards that. On Thursday April 19th there will be a Coffee morning/Raffle at Elmsett Methodist Church, Hadleigh Road, Elmsett from 10.00 am to 1.00 pm. If anybody would like to donate cakes, raffle prizes or their time helping out we will be extremely grateful. If it’s just a cup of tea and a bun and a bit of a chat we will be very pleased to see you. On Sunday May 27th I will be doing a zipwire challenge, launching myself from 10 floors up off the maternity block at Ipswich Hospital. Where the zipwire finishes I have no idea – one bright spark suggested Accident and Emergency! For this I have set up a justgiving, com account. It is very user friendly – just put in justgiving, com and then enter my name under ‘search’. If anyone feels able to sponsor me, both I and the gynaecology department will be eternally grateful. This certiďŹ cate is funded by the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (IPSA) for the purpose of assisting James Cartlidge MP in the performance of his Parliamentary duties. Printed by Keith Avis, 68 High St, Hadleigh, Ipswich IP7 5EF.

James Cartlidge writes Member of Parliament for South Suffolk There is no doubt in my mind that recent weeks have seen an acceleration in what might be termed ‘speculative applications’ for permission to build new homes in Babergh. I have had emails from constituents worried about applications in Belstead, Capel St Mary, Long Melford, Elmsett, Chelmondiston and my own village of Assington. The reason is that our district of Babergh is deemed not to have a ‘five year land supply’, i.e. is not building enough homes. As such, whilst Babergh is still the planning authority, it has to give more weight to national planning policy than local priorities. This in turn attracts developers thinking that even if their application is rejected by Babergh, they have more chance on appeal. In fact, the average number of new homes built in Babergh in the last five years is 213. In every year since 2001 prior to the last five years we built more than 213 homes a year, at an average of just under 300, including 537 in 2002. Of course, many constituents have rightly argued to me that whilst our buildout rate is low, the number of permissions granted is far higher. I understand in Babergh there are around 2,000 permissions awaiting development to start compared to fewer than 200 where it is underway. It understandably irks those communities who go through the pain barrier of seeing controversial permissions granted, only for nothing to happen; and many have said, ‘James, they shouldn’t allow this latest application until the others have started’. Fair point. In my view, nationally we need to urgently find a way to get builders building – in the Housing Secretary’s recent statement I proposed financial penalties on developers who fail to deliver on their permissions. Locally, communities concerned about development need to bring forward a Neighbourhood Plan that allocates sites for development at a sustainable level, giving greater certainty to communities, and – crucially – more control over where exactly in their back yard housing is sited. I wholeheartedly oppose unsustainable development, particularly in the countryside. But I do believe we can find a better way forward than the current mad dash for plots that may never be built.

Our March meeting of the W.I. was, to say the least, different, surprising, exciting and great fun. This was our second visit from dancer, Tom Hobden who is producing a series of videos for DanceEast with a view to showcasing Hadleigh and capturing some of its character. Quite a few of our members, for various reasons, could not make the meeting so our numbers were quite reduced. Tom, when he arrived with film maker Kate Flurrie, was quite unfased by this as he out his ideas for filming. We were all a bit worried about how much " Dancing " we would be expected to do and some of us wondered if we should have worn our Flamenco dresses or brought our tap shoes. However, to our great relief, Tom introduced us to Laura and Shakira, two dancers who came along to help him create..... and DO THE DANCING! All we had to do was talk about outings or experiences that we had enjoyed with the W.I. These included, a concert, a visit to a stud farm at Newmarket, diving, shooting, gliding and archery. Laura and Shakira invented a wonderful dance scenario to express these experiences. So creative and talented! We were very impressed and it was great entertainment. Our meeting, of course, had to include tea and cake and it went on for longer than usual but what an enjoyable evening we had! We all went home full of high spirits. Thank You DanceEast! Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 17th, April in the Seminar Suite above the Library and, as usual, new members are welcome. Rae Stapleton

Choir donation is sound as a Belle Hadleigh Community Choir like to donate some of the money raised at their concerts to local charities. For the recent 'In and Out of Love' concert, they chose the Shelley Centre for Therapeutic Riding. Once the roads were clear of snow, John and Stella from the choir visited to hand over the £125 cheque. Lyn Bensusan, the stable manager, was delighted to receive the donation and choir members were very happy to support such a worthy local cause. Part of the money (£25) was to sponsor one of the horses for a year. The choir chose Belle. She is a lovely Irish pony, strawberry roan and standing 12.2 hands high. She's also extremely lively - she wouldn't stand still to be photographed for the handing over ceremony and in fact would probably have eaten the cheque! So we used Parys instead, who is also available for sponsorship along with several others. The Shelley Centre provides horse riding experiences for people with disabilities. The benefits of contact with the animals, a feeling of being in control and getting out in the fresh air are enormous. For those unable to sit on a real horse, there is a model horse that can simulate walking, trotting and even cantering. Either way, it is one the few times a wheelchair bound person is able to look down on people. The Centre is always keen to hear from potential volunteers - no previous experience required - or from those interested in coming to ride. There are always fun things to get involved with like and annual ragwort and Pimms day! Hadleigh Community Choir is still open to new members. Look out for our next concert at Kersey church on April 28th or our full summer concert on July 7th. HCC contacts John 01473 823791 Stella 01473 823477 Shelley Centre 01473 824172

Why women mean business… The social, economic, cultural and political achievements of females around the world were celebrated last week on International Women’s Day. This year, the theme was #PressforProgress, with the focus on the gender pay gap and how best to achieve parity between men and women – which, according to one estimate, is more than 200 years away. The issue has dominated the headlines in recent months. First, the BBC struggled to justify the remuneration divide between its male and female stars and then supermarket giants Tesco and Asda found themselves under the spotlight as disgruntled employees launched multi-millionMarie Allen pound pay claims. If you thought it was tough being a working woman in the 21st century, the subsequent revelation by the BBC that two in five female British workers have been subjected to sexual harassment in the workplace will hardly have changed your opinion. But it’s not all bad news – and in fact, there are genuine grounds for optimism. For instance, figures reported recently reveal there has been a surge in the number of women starting businesses in the UK, thus narrowing the so-called ‘enterprise gap’. One interesting theory is that having children - which once led many females to give up work completely — is now a key factor in choosing self-employment, with many women surveyed saying “they wanted flexibility and freedom”. Here in Suffolk we have plenty of female entrepreneurial spirit, boosted by the launch of the University of Suffolk’s Centre for Female Entrepreneurship, which opened its doors in October with a mandate to support female innovators through the provision of events, networking opportunities, and signposting to business growth advice. There is further evidence of enterprise from MENTA – a not-for-profit company, which helps Suffolk-based people start and grow their businesses. Their data reveals that of the 1,200 people who have attended MENTA’s Start Right workshops, 64% were women. Another hurdle that can prevent women from reaching their potential is a lack of self-belief and so we are working with My Confidence Matters, an Essexbased organisation which aims to create a movement of women who can inspire, support and motivate each other. Their research revealed that 74% of women in leadership positions have lacked confidence in the workplace – and so the ambition is to give them the tools to go about their jobs with selfassurance and assertiveness. Being a working woman may at times be tough, but right across the world – and certainly here in Suffolk – women are making positive gains, day by day. Doing our bit…. Here at Gotelee, we are doing our bit too, having launched our networking lunches. I’m a firm believer that women network and do business differently to men, so these events offer an opportunity for females to learn from other successful women. SPRING News from The Station Welcome to Spring readers, Hopefully we have all seen the last of the heavy snow falls and the early morning frosts. Daffodils and snowdrops are coming out in our gardens and our thoughts are turning to tending our borders and lawns. When you open your sheds / garages up with enthusiastic plans, take the time to note details of all your tools and gardening equipment. Now is the time to mark them with a UV pen, take down serial numbers and model numbers and photograph them to keep safe. Hadleigh SNT can offer Garden Shed and Garage security advice as well as UV pens to mark your tools. Please feel free to contact anyone at Hadleigh Police Station. General advice would also be to consider installing security lights to illuminate your garden, and lights which activate when movement is detected, these are a particularly good deterrant to would be thieves. You can register all your property at the following www.immobilise.com Don’t Become A Victim Of A Telephone Scam: We take regular reports from members of the public who have fallen victim to various scams and cons which start off with a phone call or an email. Over the years we have heard of various tricks and ruses, as the fraudsters come up with increasingly convincing ways to gain the confidence of their victims. Often victims are contacted by someone purporting to be from the fraud department associated to their bank and makes claims that their accounts are being targeted by rogue bank employees. That these employees are being investigated and to safeguard their money they need to transfer their savings to an apparent “safe account. The fraudulent caller will apply a time pressure and the victim is either asked to make instant transfer online or go to a local branch to carry out the necessary transfer. DC Joanne Smith from Safeguarding and Investigations said “ The fraudulent caller will sound very convincing and claims to know the banks procedures, and even information about the victims to gain their trust. This trust may be built up over a couple of days before asking to make the transfers, as well as providing genuine telephone numbers and passwords that will correspond to legitimate bank/ building society. Residents Should Remember The Following: Your Bank or Police will never ask you to withdraw money. Your bank or the Police will never ask for your PIN, bank card or bank account details over the phone. Never download any software suggested by the caller. Do not rush into complying with the scammers demands/requests. If you receive such a call leave the landline for at least five minutes to make an outside call, Fraudsters will keep the line open and have been known to play ringtones, hold music and a recorded message down the phone so that the victim believes they are making a call to a legitimate number. You can report incidents of fraud to ACTION FRAUD by calling 03001 232040 or using their online reporting tool www.actionfraud.police.uk. Ebony’s Blog Life at The Shelley Centre Its more ‘thank you’s from us all, readers! The wonderful Hadleigh Community Choir chose to make a collection for us at their superb Valentine’s Concert in mid February. Not only that, they are sponsoring Belle from the live herd. My photo shows Stella Scanlon and John Turnbull handing over the cheque from the choir to Lyn Bensusan and Parys (the horse). Belle is pictured at work with pupils from Hampden House. The ponies just love being sponsored, and keep in touch with their supporters throughout the year. You can find out how to be a sponsor from our new web page: www.shelleyrda.com My own exciting news is that I am being SUNK in the Easter holidays! Thanks to the grant from the Masonic Charitable Foundation I am to have the floor, on which I sit, lowered; it is a brilliant solution to the problem of getting our more substantial riders onto my saddle to receive their therapy. (It has taken us ten years to be able to get here, I might add.) The General Knowledge Quiz in March was another cause for celebration with money being raised for the Centre’s coffers; thank you to all the brain boxes who supported this event. Keep Sunday May 6th free to walk the walk. Back by popular demand, the Sponsored Walk will take you on a leisurely 12k ramble across the rolling fields and woods of this lovely district; well behaved dogs are also welcome, and no doubt there will be cake for those who complete the course! Its hearing about the bluebells, nightingales, and fabulous views that make me feel a tiny bit jealous. For those of you who are reading this blog for the first time, I’m a simulator, I live indoors with my little friend Babs, and we supplement the therapy that the live horses and ponies give by allowing people, who can’t manage on one of them, to get on us. I don’t need a pony leader, but I have side walkers just like all the others. You should come and see me in action! Our new riders are making good progress and the rearranged rotas are working. We still have room for more helpers though, and would love to welcome fresh faces into the Centre. Most Volunteers give a morning or an afternoon per week, during school term times only. Please contact us if you are thinking about doing something new: ‘horsey-ness’ is not a prerequisite, what we need is kindness, reliability and a sense of humour. As the weather gets warmer and we get back into the garden, many of us will develop aches and pains as a result of over enthusiastic gardening. Here are a few tips to keep you comfortable. Check that your tools are all in good working order. If you have not had your lawn mower serviced, remember it may be more difficult to start than you expect. We see lots of back strains from those ‘’first pulls’’.Ensure that your secateurs and shears are sharp. You are more likely to develop a tendonitis in your forearms if you are struggling with blunt tools. You really do not want a tennis elbow to stop your gardening! Try and be realistic about how much you are going to be able to achieve. Tempting though it is to try and get all the lawns mowed and the vegetable bed weeded you are far more likely to survive the process pain-free if you set your self a realistic goal. We would suggest that 30-40 minutes of a given task is sufficient before you take a break. Change tasks regularly. This will ensure that you are using different muscle groups and are less likely to overuse any particular one. Do not try and carry more than you can do so comfortably. If you want to buy bags of compost or heavy pots, consider asking someone to help you. This is less shameful than having to ask for help to put your pants and socks on the following morning. Half fill your watering cans, or buy two smaller ones so you can carry one in each hand for a more balanced load. Working with your arms above your shoulders and your head back can upset your neck. Consider having your hanging baskets on a raise and lower pulley system, or even an irrigation system. Use water-retaining pellets in the compost when planting up. Invest in a decent set of steps and some long loppers for pruning high branches. Do not go indoors and sit in the softest armchair you can find at the end of the day. All that physical activity and fresh air mean you are more likely to nod off. Falling asleep in a soft chair for several hours after unaccustomed activity is a sure way to give you a stiff back. By all means sit down and have a rest, but get up regularly during the evening. We would suggest you place the remote control out of reach so you have to get up to change TV channel. If you are really tired, go to bed! Enjoy the spring and remember to call us at Hadleigh Osteopaths for help and advice. 01473 – 828585 for bookings or 07770 746224 for further information Hadleigh Osteopaths, Hadleigh Pool and Leisure , Stonehouse Road.

Club Events: A lunch to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the granting of the Club's Rotary Charter was held at The Swan Hotel, Lavenham on 22 February. 52 people enjoyed an excellent lunch prepared by the staff at the Swan. As many past members as could be contacted were invited to this important occasion and it is very pleasing to note that 12 members and widows including 7 founder members attended. A further 6 past members sent apologies and best wishes. It was a great opportunity to meet old friends and exchange reminiscences. To help this some archive material including many old photographs was on show. The Club also warmly welcomed District Governor, Robert Lovick who travelled from Norfolk to be with us and propose the toast to the Club. President David responded to the toast and spoke about various activities of the Club, past, present and future. He mentioned the near closure of the Club 2 years ago but with membership building again he looked forward to the future with confidence. He then proposed the toast to the guests and Lesley Ford Platt, President of Sudbury Rotary Club, replied. It was particularly appropriate that Lesley should have the last word as Sudbury Club founded Hadleigh and is our Mother Club. President David would like to thank very much indeed everyone involved in ensuring that this was a memorable occasion particularly Glenn Abbassi, Ian Burne, Richard Whiting as well as the staff and management of The Swan. A raffle was also held and raised £319.00 which will be split between Rotary Charity 'End Polio Now' and Club funds. Membership: This stands at 11 at present but there are 4 or 5 visitors at present who are keen to know more about Rotary so that we are hoping that numbers will increase shortly. Bearing in mind that numbers were down to 8 two years ago and closure was contemplated this is great progress. You may recall that in last month’s update on the progress to the Hurst Frame repairs we reported that 2 legs and 2 cross members were now the only missing part of the structural undercarriage repairs that needed completing. Well we are now down to the final leg and a few minor repairs to the sluice gate crank. Pictured is the final leg and Cross member that Millwright Bill Griffiths has prepared ready to be lifted into position and the cross member reinstated. The sluice gate allows water to enter the water wheel by being lowered and allowing the water to flow over the gate and into the water wheel buckets at a mid-wheel height, hence the term a Breast Shot water wheel. The crank that enables the gate to be lowered is located centrally within the mill and runs horizontally along the length of the Hurst Frame and then outside to the wheel house and the sluice gate. It is quite apparent that there have been issues with the mechanics of the crank in the past with some later additional repairs that we are retaining but also improving by the addition of further support. In preparation of works to the next stage of the Hurst Frame that will consist of reinstating the timber bed and the bed stones we have, with the help of some muscle, moved the bed stones out of the wheel house and back into the mill ready for the lift back up and onto the Hurst Frame. Pictured are Charlie, Gary, George and Kegan carefully moving one of the 3 very heavy bed stones back to the mill. Each stone weighs between 350 and 400 KG. In readiness of the continued works to the bed of the Hurst Frame we have managed to acquire some fantastic Larch that is very tight grained and with very few knots. This is ideal as the bed needs to be as tight and as clean as possible as this area is subjected to flour dust that may escape during the milling process. The mill will be open on April 22nd when you can see first hand all the works that have been carried out recently whilst also enjoying numerous other attractions and the amazing display of Vintage and Classic vehicles that will be on show. Drive it Day starts on April 22nd at 10am and finished at 4pm with all proceeds raised being shared by F.O.K.M and the Community Heartbeat Trust who will also be in attendance on the day giving Defibrillator demonstrations and the public the opportunity to have a go themselves. Entry for display vehicles and pedestrians is free whist public parking is charged at £5 per car. Further dates for your diary are May 12th & 13th National Mills Weekend, June 17th Dog Day & July 7th Summer ball. For further information call us or visit www.kerseymill.co.uk

Free hearing checks in Hadleigh to help those with hearing loss Ten million people in the UK - one in six of us - have some degree of hearing loss. It's surprisingly tricky to spot gradual hearing loss as our brains are very good at compensating, so we're not even aware of how much we've lost until things are quite far advanced. The good news is that there are things you can do to about it. The bad news is that there are potentially serious consequences if you choose to ignore hearing loss, including an increased risk of dementia. Local hearing care specialists The Hearing Care Centre, offers award winning hearing care services from 25 centres across East Anglia. This year they are celebrating their 20th year in business and they hope to continue to raise awareness about the prevalence of hearing loss, its effect on everyday life and the potential dangers of leaving hearing loss untreated. Audiologist Karen Finch and her team will be holding a free ‘Hearing Care Centre Open Day’ at their local hearing clinic at Health By Design, Hadleigh between 9am and 5pm on Tuesday 1st May 2018. During the event they will be providing free hearing assessments (usually £20), along with complimentary professional advice about your hearing test results and discussing possible solutions that could help improve your hearing. All services are available by appointment only. To book your appointment call The Hearing Care Centre on 01473 230330 or visit www.hearingcarecentre.co.uk for more information

Throughout the year, visitors can find out about the Hadleigh area from the information point in St Mary’s Church. In summer between May and September – volunteers make the welcome personal by meeting visitors there and being able to give initial guidance on the town, the church, walks and excursions. More in-depth information is available in the wide range of leaflets provided by Hadleigh, Lavenham, Suffolk and Essex organisations. More help is needed. If you would like to join the team, please phone or email Elaine Root in the Town Council office (01473 823884 or staff@hadleightowncouncil.co.uk) giving your name and contact details. You will then be sent further details of the scheme, and an invitation to come and see what the volunteers do. (If you have volunteered in the past, you will be contacted anyway with 2018 information, so you do not need to do anything.)

Mars Sun 5th Rise 06.22, Set 19.37; 15th Rise 06.00, Set 19.54; 30th Rise 05.29 Set 20.19. Moon New 16th, Full 30th. The Planets Venus appears higher above the horizon after Sunset each evening and is unmistakably brilliant white in colour and very bright at magnitude -3.9. Mars is a morning object and passes 1.3 degrees south of Saturn on April 2nd. Jupiter - The Moon passes close on April 3rd and again on April 30th. Saturn is at aphelion, or farthest distance it can get from the Sun on April 17th. An event that only occurs every 29.5 years. Mars On July 27th this year, Mars reaches opposition in our skies, that is to say, the planet will be directly opposite the Sun as seen from our skies. It will also be at a close distance to Earth at some 38,881,050 miles, about as close as it can ever get to us. Mars is very easy to see due to its brightness at this time and its very distinctive blood-red colour, which a lot of ancient civilizations associated with bloodshed and war which led to Mars being named Aries, the Roman God of war. The planet is fourth in line from the Sun and has a diameter of 4,212 miles, just over half the diameter of the Earth. Numerous missions have been sent to the planet in a search for life. The atmosphere is thin and composed of mainly carbon dioxide and with a surface pressure of 6 millibars which is less than 1 percent of the Earth's mean sea level pressure. A good telescope will reveal features on the planet too - notably the polar ice caps which are dry ice and grow and shrink with the changing of the seasons. The seasons occur because Mars has an axial tilt of 25 degrees, the Earth by comparison is tilted at 23.5 degrees. Mars is currently in the morning sky in Sagittarius and rises at 03.00 . By the time of opposition at the end of July the planet will be rising at 21.30 and will be very obvious in the southern sky. A good thing to do now is to get outside and sketch it or photograph it; you will notice how it changes in size each month and you will be able to see clearer each month details on the planets surface. The next time Mars will be this close again will be September 15th, 2035! Any questions you would like answered, please don't hesitate to drop me an email at neilnorman03@gmail.com. Neil Norman FRAS

The School’s 50th Birthday! St Mary’s School has reached a huge milestone! We all celebrated the school’s 50th birthday on 15th March 2018. In 1968, the school was officially opened by Bishop Leslie Brown. We would like to thank all the former pupils and staff members who returned to the school over the last few weeks to meet the children and answer their questions about what the school was like in the past. After interviewing our visitors, all the children took part in an ‘Everybody Writes’ day and their writing was displayed for parents at the end of the school day. Children wrote all sorts of things, including newspaper reports and diary entries about the school’s opening and reports about the school’s history. On the actual anniversary, 15th March, the day started with a talent show – the performers showed lots of courage while they entertained us with singing, dancing, gymnastics and comedy. Then we held an assembly, in which each class presented work they had been doing about the school’s birthday, including the papier mache sculpture made by Oak Class – they used made 50 sparkly, coloured balloons to make a big hot-air balloon sculpture with their memories about the school in the basket. Following this, the children had a party lunch, while there was a buffet for all our invited guests, including representatives from the Diocese and the St Edmundsbury and Ipswich Diocesan Multi Academy Trust; people from the local church; former staff members and pupils; and school governors. The guests included two of our former Headteachers: Mr Mann and Mrs Herbert, as well as three former Deputy Headteachers: Mr Brisland, Mr Girling and Mr Coombs. It was lovely to see so many members of our school community, past and present, come together to celebrate this special day. We were delighted that Bishop Mike Harrison was able to join us for our celebration! Bishop Mike led us in prayer for the school and blessed our new spiritual garden. The spiritual garden is a quiet, calm place where classes or individuals can go for prayer or reflection. After this, we had a special 50th birthday service at St Mary’s Church in Hadleigh. Many thanks to Canon John Parr who welcomed us and prayed for the school and Reverend Sue Foster, who made a film about the school that was shown during the service – it included lots of comments from pupils, former staff members and parents about why the school is special to them. Our former Deputy Headteacher, Mr Coombs, accompanied the children on the piano for the hymns. The service included incredible performances from former pupils, Oliver Woods and Oliver Morris, as well as prayers written by the children and Bible readings based on some of the school’s values (Year 6 voted for the values they thought were most important: friendship, compassion, respect and hope). The Bishop did a talk about hope for the future and the message that big things can come from humble beginnings, based on the parable of the mustard seed from the Bible. The service finished with a birthday cake, made by Mrs Tilling from the school office, and a rousing rendition of ‘happy birthday’. It was a really special day in the school’s history and now we are looking forward to the next 50 years! Dance East Rowan Class have been involved in an exciting project with Dance East. Each week, Tom from Dance East supports the children in creating dances about themselves, using their bodies to make ‘signatures’. The project will conclude with a video of final performances. Miss Pimm, the class teacher, said: “The children really enjoyed their first week; even reluctant pupils were dancing by the end! The children were active and engaged throughout the whole session, and were immediately excited for the next session. We are delighted to be part of the ‘Our Town Dances’ project and can’t wait to see the finished work. Storytelling Oak Class have really enjoyed their regular visits from Daphne the ‘Story Lady’! At the moment, they are engaging with sensory stories on seasonal changes. They have also looked at Divali and Chinese New Year through oral storytelling. Children find their story sessions really inspiring, helping to develop their creativity and interest in stories and books. Thank you to Daphne for all her time and creativity! Indoor Athletics Well done to the children in Year 5, who took part in an athletics festival at Hadleigh High School. There were lots of track and field

events in the school hall. Many thanks to the High School staff and students for hosting another excellent event! The children enjoyed all the activities and were good team-players, giving each other lots of support and encouragement. Collective Worship We have been delighted to receive lots of visitors to lead collective Worship so far this term, including representatives from Christian Youth Ministry, Reverend Joyce Willis, Mr Redmon, Mr Mann, Mr Hempstead, Reverend Bryn Rickards, Pastor Chris Todd and Reverend David and Wendy Atkins. They have helped the children to think about this term’s values: ‘perseverance’ and ‘justice’. Rowan Class presented an assembly for their parents on the theme of ‘perseverance’. We were all entertained by their singing and rapping and their examples of times they have persevered. We have also been lucky to have a number of other visitors, who have shared their expertise in assemblies, including Abbie Smith from the MET Office, Cheryl from One Life Suffolk, PCSO Denise Ford and Anny and Claire, who talked about dental hygiene. Thanks to everyone who has helped us this term! Snow!

Hopefully, spring will actually arrive soon! However, we have all had great fun playing in the snow this term! The grown-ups couldn’t avoid the snowballs for long!

Hadleigh & District Garden Club Our last meeting Monday 12th March 2018: Despite the pouring rain the club's AGM was well attended. A short meeting saw the majority of the present committee re-elected and happily, with the support of three new members, we now number seven. This means that we can confidently look forward to our 2018/19 programme, the hard working sub committee have planned visits to three very different gardens and a programme of speakers offering a wide range of subjects with something to suit everyone. The highlight of our year being our 50th anniversary celebrations in July which we are very much looking forward to. The evening ended with the usual raffle and refreshments and the winner of the competiton was Fiona Quinn with a beautiful display of crocus. Our next get together on Monday 9th April 2018: We welcome as our speaker for the April meeting John Hewson. He will be sharing his expertise on the subject of sweet peas. There will be a sale as well as a talk which I am sure will prove very popular. The meeting starts at 7.30pm at Hadleigh town Hall(opposite The Ram pub). The entrance fee is £3 for non memebers and £1 for members, to include refreshments. We will be holding our monthly raffle and the competition for this month is 'a specimen daffodil'. We look forward to seeing you there.

Coming soon! The D-I-Y Deli Roly and Mary Pipe are passing the indirect tax practice to Walter Wright with effect from 1 April. Roly will act for WW as a consultant in the short term on an “as & when” basis but Mark Wallace will take the lead on VAT & duties work. Meanwhile Roly & Mary plan to write a book about producing your own smoked & cured foods. Sample recipes will be published in Hadleigh Community News from time to time. Watch this space! Meanwhile here is a list of useful equipment & products worth looking at; most of these are available from Partridges. For hot smoking: A covered gas or charcoal fired BBQ; A stainless steel container to house wood chips; Wood chips – while oak is traditional fruit woods such as apple & cherry are less likely to overpower the key ingredient An enclosed stainless steel box with racks inside; these are marketed under the brand name “Snowbee” & fit inside most BBQ’s; A purpose made smoker For cold smoking: A cold smoke generator; you can pay a 4-figure sum for some of these but there is a perfectly adequate product marketed by a firm called Pro-Q; it comes in two sizes for around £35 & £50; it can be bought in a package deal with a range of woods. An inverted cardboard box with air holes in the bottom and a closable vent at the top; alternatively, a purpose made smoker is ideal, but comes with a 3-figure price tag. Wood dust – available from specialist suppliers - try a website called hot smoked. Down to Earth ...with Dave Will this cold weather never end? Everything outside is on hold at the moment because it is so wet everywhere. I was out with the camera when we had the very heavy snow, the deepest we have seen in the twelve years that we have lived here in Hadleigh, very pretty and it was great to see all the families out enjoying themselves with their sledges. It is very much a waiting game at the moment with pea plants sitting in the greenhouse waiting to be planted out on the allotment as soon as it dries up bit. For the first time the trays of seed potatoes have been moved into a spare bedroom to continue chitting. This does give a little more space in the greenhouse for seed trays to be planted up with leeks, celeriac, cucumbers, courgettes and sweet peas etc. With a little bottom heat they soon show growth, as soon as they germinate remove from the heat, open any vents in the plastic covers and keep lightly watered. The standard fuchsias have not been moved outside yet but they, along with various other over wintered fuchsias have been trimmed back a bit as they are showing strong new growth. Don't give up on any that appear dead as they will probably start to show signs of life very soon. Keep an eye out for vine weevil and slugs as they will thrive in the warm conditions provided by a greenhouse. As soon as it is possible cut back the hydrangeas to the first healthy fat bud. Buddleia can be cut back very hard again to remove any frost damage, it will soon regrow. As I write this the rain has at last stopped and the sun is shining, I feel that I should be out there getting on with the many jobs that I have to do. With luck the better weather will hold for a few days and I can catch up. Many birds are nest building at this time of year with all sorts of materials being of use to them, hair from a hairbrush or a pet, sheep wool gathered from barbed wire fences, fluffy seed heads, grasses, moss and natural fibre tumble drier fluff. They have even been pulling the coconut fibres from some new wall baskets we bought! Spread any material near to any potential nesting sites, as sparrows in particular like to gather material from where they are building their nest. It is important to keep feeding the birds but it is equally important to keep any feeding areas clean and, as far as possible, free from disease. Wash feeders and water containers with soapy water. I like to pressure wash the bird bath, bird table and the surrounding patio slabs. With the return of Gardeners' World on television it was encouraging to see that Monty was struggling with the weather just the same as us mere mortals. That's all for this time, Dave

Our first meeting at Chamberlin Hall hosted our celebrity speaker Cleve West, and his talk on Healing Gardens. Members and guests packed the hall on a lovely sunny afternoon, to hear him talk about Horatio’s Garden and his designs for other medal winning gardens where he needed to create spaces that were both calming and healing. Water is an essential element to these gardens, with inspiration drawn from the Paradise Gardens of the Middle East. The soft palette of colours used, with mass planting to make swathes of calming hues; sometimes restricted colour use, just greens and whites; the textures of plants - all combine to give a sense of healing. Hard landscaping with vertically laid drystone walls mixed with painted walls juxtapose energies within a garden. It was interesting to note that in the garden which he designed for the Bupa Garden – An Alzheimer Garden, the furniture and seating were painted red, so that Alzheimer patients can recognise it more easily. To create a feeling of breathing space between plants, Cleve likes to use gravel. This also has the advantage of making a newly planted garden look more established. In Horatio’s Garden, which is used by long term patients with spinal injuries, the garden was designed to produce flowers, cascading vegetables and fruits. These could be picked by patients when they were wheeled out in their beds, to the garden, so that they could enjoy the normal pleasures of picking and eating a summer harvest. The garden has been planted to attract birds and insects too, particularly focussing on fragrance. Cleve has recently become a Vegan, with his concerns for the state of the planet uppermost in his mind. He gave us his thoughts on the subject, and how those of us who care for our garden plots, can think about the effect that we have on the whole planet, and that maybe we should all consider treating the world with the same love and attention that we give to our gardens. He is a man who gardens from the heart, and it was a pleasure to meet him. Our meeting on the 3rd of February was postponed to the 10th, due to the wintry weather, and members finally enjoyed an informative talk on the Delights of Dahlias, from Steve Edney, head gardener of the Salutation Garden in Sandwich, Kent. Steve started his career as a garden designer, then in 2006 took on the restoration of the Salutation, a garden originally designed by Edwin Lutyens, but much neglected by former owners. In 2013 the garden was badly damaged by major floods, but Steve and his team restored it a second time, and it is now a plant lover’s paradise. Steve is on the RHS herbaceous committee and has won 2 Chelsea Gold Medals in partnership with Cayeux Iris. His great passion is Dahlias, and he hold the National Collection. Our next meeting is on April 7th when Harriet Rycroft will be giving us her talk ‘Summer Splendour – Planting Exciting Container Displays’. Above the Parapet County Council Report - Cllr Mick Fraser Proposal to change home to school and post-16 travel Suffolk County Council (SCC) is facing a huge challenge again in balancing this year’s and the forthcoming years’ budgets after progressively reduced funding from Central Government since 2012. One area of concern is how school and post-16 travel is currently funded. It is considered that the service is no longer affordable and capable of meeting the needs of the growing demand driven by new housing and schools, and the increasing transport needs for those with special educational needs and disabilities. While significant savings have been made from other parts of the council, has protected school and post-16 travel for a number of years. In fact, SCC has increased funding by £3 million and last year, £21 million of taxpayers’ money was spent getting our children to and from school. It should be noted that the council’s current travel policies are more generous than the law requires. Many changes have already been implemented that have made the service more efficient, saving around £2.6 million, but now like many other councils across the country, SCC needs to consider making more significant changes across many areas, including home to school travel. A recent public consultation highlighting the challenges faced with funding, asked residents for their thoughts on how we could adapt to the changing education landscape in Suffolk as schools continue to become more independent, moving away from being historically under local authority control, with new powers to set their choice of admissions, adjust term dates and manage school travel plans. Over 3500 people responded to the consultation surveys; I had my say on this issue and I hope you did too. All the feedback gathered will be carefully and thoroughly considered by SCC’s Cabinet in June 2018, before a motion is put to the council for debate and deciding on a preferred way forward. Of course, in Hadleigh we have three primary and an high school which can easily be walked to by most of our children. So, on this part of the issue we are not facing the same challenges as some of our neighbours in the more rural areas. However, all our 16 to 19-year olds must travel to Ipswich, Colchester or elsewhere to continue with their higher education or training and the proposals will have a significant impact on those affected. Like many of my colleagues representing their respective divisions, I will be campaigning hard to gain a fair resolution for our young people and their families. My next monthly surgery will be on 21st April 2018 from 11am until noon in the Sharron Elliott room of the Royal British Legion Club, George St. Highways faults can be reported at: https://www.suffolk.gov.uk/roads-andtransport/ or by telephone on: 0345 606 6171. mick.fraser@suffolk.gov.uk mob: 0793 551 2591

The Hadleigh Steering Group is open to all members of the community. It is your opportunity to come and meet other local people and put your views forward on some of the matters affecting our town – or just come along to listen. Everyone is welcome. Last meeting a couple of new people attended, which was great. When you attend you are not making a commitment to become a member of anything – you are simply showing an interest in our town – so come along and join us. The next meeting is: 4.15pm on Monday 9th April at Hadleigh Pool and Leisure. We will have a presentation on Patients Building Better Participation – there are many changes happening at our Health Centre – come along and find out more. Meeting 5th March 2018 - Notes of Proposals/Actions/Decisions Chair Arrangements: Jan Devey will be chairing the April meeting, The May meeting will be Chaired by Kathryn Grandon and the agenda item will be a presentation by Suffolk County Council which will provide a contextual vision for Suffolk in the next 30 years. Kathryn asked if any members should be willing to Chair future meetings please can they contact Kathryn Grandon or Clare Free at Babergh. Main Agenda Item: The future of Corks Lane; Anne Bennet, Corporate Manager for Housing Development Anne explained the background to the discussion; Babergh left the Corks lane site to re-locate the operation of the authority to Endeavour House, commissioning Purcells to confirm development options that realise the potential market values of the site; alongside the requirement to deliver outcomes which meet the Councils’ Joint Strategic Priorities and also consider the socio-economic impact relating to the closure of the office. The initial project, which is to get to the point of submitting a planning application for the future use of the site, commenced June 2017. To date, the site has been subject to planning appraisals, topographical and building surveys, ecology, arboriculture, and archaeological assessments. In addition to the other surveys and assessments, there have been flood risk assessments carried out as parts of Corks Lane and the Bridge Street car park are in flood zones. This modelling is still awaiting approval by the Environment Agency. Soft market testing carried out on behalf of the authority by ARC has concluded that due to the condition of the buildings, land and building constraints and conversion cost that there would be no interest from any commercial sector for use as offices, hotel, or care home. Bridge House has been identified as a building of interest, so if it is viable to retain this, it will be brought back into use. Costing and viability assessments have been used to structure a range of options for the site which are all residential schemes. Members, Senior Leadership Team and Town Councillors have been informed and consulted on the preferred option following the pre application planning process. All proposed schemes will be subject to review by the Suffolk Design Review Panel, this is booked for the 29th March. Public Consultation events will be held on 11th April at the Hadleigh Cricket Pavilion from 3 - 8pm and 18th April from 3pm - 8pm in the Guildroom at the Town Hall, please can everyone present encourage people to attend these. Once consultation has been completed the governance process will require approval for the final scheme by Cabinet. It is hoped that this will be completed by the end of July 2018. The group asked questions about the extent of local input and consultation and the influence that would have on the final schemes. Both District and Town councillors confirmed that views had been sought from them early in the process and that this had influenced the designs now being proposed. Anne confirmed that this consultation will be an opportunity for people to offer their views and suggestions for the site. It is not possible to provide a timeline for completion of the entire project. It was confirmed that Babergh will support financial costs of delivering this work, and that Mid Suffolk are following an identical process for the site in Needham Market. The group raised the issue of parking and highlighted that any design should include ample parking for new residents to ensure that there was no impact on street parking.

A WILLIAM PRETTY DAY An Edwardian Ipswich family, their department store And corset factory and the Hadleigh connection

Presented by Julia Barrett and Roger Kennell In St. Mary’s Church, Hadleigh 9.30 am – 4.00 pm Tickets are £30 and include buffet lunch This event is organised by the Friends of St. Mary’s Church, a charitable organisation dedicated to preserving the architectural heritage of Hadleigh’s magnificent historic Church and Deanery Tower

FORMER BABERGH OFFICES, CORKS LANE AND ANGEL COURT PUBLIC CONSULTATIONS DATES Public Consultation events will be held: 11th April from 3 – 8pm at the Hadleigh Cricket Pavilion 18th April from 3 – 8pm in the Guildroom at the Town Hall (this event will also include information on Angel Court) Visit Hadleigh Website: The site is going well, and its look is evolving with new content improving how it works. Promoting the Guildhall: The Fizz and Sparkle event held to promote the Guildhall was very successful. Despite the weather, around 150 people attended, there were 2 fashion shows 20 stands / stall holders a prosecco bar, glitter bar and vintage café. Thank you to everyone who supported and attended the event. It managed to raise nearly £1,000 for local charities and was a positive way of promoting the Guildhall. Town Guides: All insurances are now in place, supported by Hadleigh Town Council. The tour guide group are now offering walking tour gift vouchers for people to buy as gifts. An expression of interest has been submitted to a television programme (Big Things) that support and fund large community art projects. The suggestion is that a giant sheep sculpture could be erected in the town to highlight the historic connection to the wool trade. There is a short listing process and people are asked to write in support of the idea. The sheep sculpture commissioned following the Year of the Sheep festival is currently being made and will be installed in the Church yard once ready. The Hadleigh Music Festival: The preview event will be on Sat 21st April at St Mary's Church, from 4pm when the Hadleigh Ukulele group will be playing, followed by a seated concert at 5pm. This will not be ticketed but there will be a collection for an appeal for funding for large outdoor instruments in the town. The organisers are still very keen to hear from anyone wanting to organise a music event to be part of the festival. There is still availability on Saturday afternoon and popular music is under represented. Tidy Town: The group would like to draw attention to the issues of dog walkers bagging and dumping dog mess on paths and in hedges in the town. It was confirmed that it is acceptable to put bagged dog waste in the high street (i.e. not red) bins. This issue will also be suggested for inclusion in the police column. Five Morrisons’ trolleys that have been abandoned in the town for a month have now been returned to the store by the Tidy Town Group. It is understood that the practice requiring £1 to release a trolley is going to be reinstated at the store. The National spring clean campaign scheduled for the start of March had to be postponed due to the snow. Please could anyone fixing temporary signs around the town ensure that they take them down and also remove any cable ties. Town Council: There is a talk at the Guildhall on the 14th July about the Pretty family, who had a Corset factory in the Guildhall for a period and large factories in Ipswich making corsets. Babergh will be holding an event to talk about the proposed merger with Mid Suffolk District Council at the Guildhall. This will be held at 7:30pm on the 10th April. AOB: The car park at the end of the railway walk is now overfull and all the verges have been driven over. It is thought that this is now heavily used by commuters seeking to avoid parking fees. Beestons have decided not to revert to their original bus schedule and will continue to have a 9.20am rather than 9.30am bus to Ipswich. This means that users with bus passes are unable to travel for free as these don’t apply until 9.30am. A Ball held in the church to raise money for the National Deaf Children Society was very successful raising £5.5k for charity. Future Main Agenda Items: Jan Devey agreed to explore whether there could be a presentation on the changes to the Hadleigh Health Centre practice. “Patients Building Better Participation” will therefore be the subject for the next meeting – come and find out the latest news about what is happening at your Health Centre. Date Of Next Meeting: 9th April 2018 @ 4:15pm Hadleigh Pool and Leisure For more information about the Hadleigh Steering Group or to add items to the agenda, please contact Kathryn Grandon: Kathryn.Grandon@Babergh.gov.uk 01473 824489 or Clare Free: Clare.Free@Baberghmidsuffolk.gov.uk

RESIGNATION OF THE DEPUTY TOWN MAYOR, COUNCILLOR WILSON Councillor Wilson’s resignation had been received on the 26th January 2018. The Clerk had advised Babergh District Council and the Notice of Vacancy has been displayed. The closing date to call an election is the 22nd February 2018. Councillor Fraser asked if there would be a cost implication for the Town Council if a bye-election was held. He was advised that there would be and it could be in the region of between £3,000 to £5,000. DEPUTY TOWN MAYOR The Mayor nominated Councillor Matthews this was seconded by Councillor Shearly-Sanders. Councillor Monks nominated Councillor Cook this was seconded by Councillor Whiting A paper vote was carried. The results were: Councillor Matthews 9 votes, Councillor Cook 5 votes. It was RESOLVED that Councillor Matthews be, and is hereby elected, Deputy Town Mayor to serve until the next Annual Meeting of the Council and signed the Declaration of Acceptance of Office Book. STANDING ORDER NO. 40 Councillor Shearly-Sanders had provided detailed correspondence which had been included with the Agenda. These are the questions put forward with answers provided by the Clerk: Hadleigh Cemetery - Is the Council proposing to investigate how the Section 73 Application came to be made on its behalf without any resolution authorising it? If not, why not. The Answer is No. This work was carried out following advice received from Babergh District Council Planning Department. Is the Town Council considering authorising any acts, matters or things relating to the 2018 consent? If so provide further details - The Clerk did not understand the question and asked Councillor Shearly-Sanders if he could be more specific than referring to ‘things’. He referred the Clerk to his accompanying notes. The Clerk advised that if he was referring to cemetery rules, regulations etc. for the extension then, of course, all this information would be dealt with by the Council. Layham Road Sports Ground - With the Town Council no longer requiring the Capital Fund for significant unexpected maintenance to Layham Road, which is to be demolished and rebuilt, could this fund of £148,000 now be allocated and applied, together with the Layham Road Sports Ground Fund of £65,000, together providing initial equity for the Sports Ground Project of £213,000, thus reducing any debt that may otherwise be required? If not, why not? - Councillor Angland advised that this would need to be discussed by the Finance & Personnel Committee as the Responsible Finance Officer is not available at present. Hadleigh Guildhall Complex - What is the total of payments made by the Town for general benefit of the inhabitants of Hadleigh since 31 May 2011 under its obligation (in paragraph 20 of the Trust Document) What plan does the Council have for leasing the Guildhall complex? - If none, is the Council seeking professional advice on a letting strategy to help comply with its leasing obligation (in paragraph 20 of the Trust Document) If the Council is seeking professional advice, why is it not doing so? - Councillor Shearly-Sanders was advised that these questions would need to be asked of the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. QUESTIONS RAISED BY COUNCILLOR SHEARLY SANDERS AT THE JANUARY MEETING 1 the TH/GC (not being a Council owned property) be excluded as a potential beneficiary from this Council Fund in the Budget and rely on its own Extraordinary Repair Fund after that , and only if appropriate, apply for grant like everybody else in Hadleigh? - It was felt that there was no issue with the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity applying for a grant from Hadleigh Town Council. It was also felt that Hadleigh Town Council should be paying more for the renting of the office space from the Hadleigh Market Feoffment Charity. 2 the present balance of the fund be “earmarked” for the Council’s Layham Road sports project which is under way now? - Councillor Shearly-Sanders was asked as to which ‘fund’ he was referring to. When he clarified this was the Capital Fund it was explained that this cannot be earmarked for the Layham Road sports project as no costings were available at present. The Clerk has been instructed to investigate grants for this project by the Finance & Personnel Committee. ACCOUNTS FOR PAYMENT It was RESOLVED that accounts amounting to £73,565.95 including HMRC, Utilities, SCC Pension Fund and staff salaries be approved for payment. PLANNING COMMITTEE The Minutes of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 8th February 2018 were noted. FINANCE & PERSONNEL COMMITTEE – PART 1 The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 1st February 2018 was received and accepted including the recommendation to provide grants to: i) £50 to Neighbourhood Watch Suffolk ii) £150 to Sudbury Newstalk iii) £250 to Crucial Crew 2018 Councillor Cook clarified that the Committee would be dealing with ‘progress made’ and not ‘amendments’ to the Standing Orders and Policies as the report stated. The Clerk advised that since the meeting the Company that had quoted for the microphone system and hearing loop for the Council Chamber were able to provide a demonstration. Permanent hearing loops in other rooms of the building was not possible and a mobile hearing loop had been included in the quotation.

ENVIRONMENT & GENERAL PURPOSES COMMITTEE The Report of the Meeting of the Committee held on the 1st February 2018 was received and accepted. ANNUAL TOWN MEETING Items for the Agenda included: Updates – this could incorporate the Neighbourhood Plan; Cemetery Extension; Layham Road Pavilion etc. Along with the Police it was agreed that the East of England Air Ambulance Service be invited to report on their service. Hadleigh Health Centre – a representative from the PPG to speak on patient participation TOWN COUNCIL MEETINGS The Clerk reported the response received from Suffolk County Council stating that they would not meet the cost of Hadleigh Town Council using a room in an education facility. The Clerk reported that the four schools in the town had been contacted about room hire. The High School do not open in the evenings. St. Mary’s Primary School had a room available in term time and school holidays which would cost £12.00 per hour and would need setting up and cleaning away. The Clerk was asked to investigate if South Suffolk Leisure had a suitable room. It was agreed that whilst investigations for a suitable venue continued until further notice all meetings would be held in the Dining Room. MEETING DATE SCHEDULE The Meeting Date Schedule was approved although all Planning Committee Meeting dates were not finalised. It was noted that there were a number of dates where the Planning Committee would be held on the same day as full Town Council meetings. It was agreed that this would be reviewed once the number of applications was known with the option that the Planning Meeting may be moved to a Tuesday evening. HADLEIGH NEIGHBOURHOOD PLAN Councillor Angland reported that she had been contacted by a Management Company and requested Town Council approval to investigate further the possibility of this Company taking over the running of the Neighbourhood Plan. It was agreed that Councillor Angland contact the Company and report back. STANDING ORDER 27 – A POINT OF ORDER Councillor Wiltshire had requested a recorded vote be taken at the January meeting concerning accessible meeting but the request was denied. Standing Order 27 is a model standing order appearing in bold states: If a Councillor so requires, the Clerk shall record the names of the Councillors who voted on any question so as to show whether they voted for or against it. Such a request must be made before moving on to the next business. On talking to the Town Clerk for clarification both she and the Office Administrator understood that once the voting had actually taken place and been completed that it is then not possible to ask for a recorded vote. Councillor Wiltshire was advised that the Standing Orders and Policies were going through the annual review by the Finance & Personnel Committee and certain Councillors had been tasked with certain matters. Councillor Wiltshire felt that this was a matter for Full Council not just the Finance & Personnel Committee and respectfully requested that whoever reviews the Standing Orders pays attention to the legislation and the model standing orders which are available via our membership of SALC. She also requested that SALC be approached for advice as part of the service that Hadleigh Town Council pay for as members. Councillor Cook advised that she had been tasked with reviewing the Standing Orders and had obtained the NALC standing orders which she would be working with as these are what SALC would be working to. Councillor Fraser drew Councils attention to Standing Order 45 j. which states: A Councillor, other than the mover of a Resolution, shall not, without leave of the Council, speak more than once on any Resolution except to move an amendment or further amendment, or on an amendment, or on a point of order, or in personal explanation, or to move the closure. He requested the Mayor bring this item to a close on point of order. REPRESENTATIVES Councillor Haylock advised that there was to be a meeting of the Wool Town Association on Monday 19th February and work was progressing. HADLEIGH TOWN FORUM Councillor Sheldrick advised that there were only himself and Councillor Young still members of the Forum. A Councillor to stand as Chairman was required to ensure the Forum could continue. As questions were referring to the Constitution of the Forum and whether it needed to run along the same lines, it was agreed that a copy of the Constitution would be provided to all Councillors and discussed at the next Town Council meeting. SUFFOLK HOME TO SCHOOL AND POST 16 TRAVEL CONSULTATION Councillor Cook had provided a written report. It was agreed that Hadleigh Town Council would recommend Option 3 - no change - but request that savings be investigated. Councillor Cook would complete the consultation for the Town Council. TOWN MATTERS Councillor Cook raised the Suffolk Free Press article regarding a support access point in Hadleigh. It was clarified that no discussion had taken place with Hadleigh Town Council. The Town Clerk had been contacted with a view to the Town Council being involved but no communication was ever received or

followed up. It was felt that Hadleigh should have a support access point being the second largest town in the district and requested Babergh District Council action this. There being no further business the meeting closed at 9.57pm Mrs Carol A. Bailey BA(Hons) PSLCC CiLCA – Town Clerk Addendum: This is a draft report of the meeting. Letter from Layham www.layham.org

Layham Parish Council The main matters discussed at the meeting of the Parish Council on 28 February 2018 were: • Public Forum The Parishioner present said the road from Upper Layham to Hadleigh had been affected several times recently by roadworks and accidents blocking the road. A recent water leak had led to water freezing on the road; Anglia Water had attended and closed the road for repairs. Several drivers had ignored the SCC signs and turned into Mill Lane, thinking they would be able to reach Lower Layham. When they realised this was impossible, they turned round and drove out again, some of them driving far too fast in a residential area. He said he would like to see signage to tell drivers there was no access to Lower Layham or Hadleigh from either Mill Lane or Water Lane. If SCC was unable to provide these, he suggested the PC might consider paying for them. It was agreed that this issue would be an agenda item for the March meeting. A resident had complained that the road from Lower Layham to Hadleigh near the playing field frequently flooded, making it difficult for walkers. However, as this part of the road was actually in Hadleigh, it was not considered appropriate for the PC to take any action. However, the Clerk would report the flooding on Suffolk CC’s website and would encourage residents to do the same. • Suffolk County Council report The main issues at the moment were the increase in council tax (2.99%) and the 2% adult care precept, and the Home to School transport consultation, which had ended on 28 February. As the consultation period had now closed, it was agreed to wait for the recommendations in the paper due to go to Cabinet in June before writing formally to SCC. Councillor Laing said he felt strongly that the PC should object to any reduction in free school transport for the children of the parish. • Annual Spring Clean The annual spring clean on 24 February had been well attended and the Clerk had emailed participants to thank them. The possibility of holding another litter pick later in the year would be discussed at the March meeting. • Local History Group The Chairman said the Marriages in Layham exhibition, held in 2017, had raised over £1000, all of which had been given to the church’s fabric fund. The Local History Group would be holding another exhibition in May, showcasing aspects of the history of Layham. • Playing Field The Playing Field Management Committee had coppiced the hedge line between the Mill Garden and Spinney and the Mill Lane end of the playing field. The hedge was planted about 15 years ago and had been overlooked during that time. The coppicing should promote growth from the base of the trees and shrubs, which would then be managed to a sensible height. It might be necessary to plant hedging in some of the gaps to ensure a good thick hedge. The willow dome had also been cut back and re-woven. • Planning Councillors expressed concern that a planning application had been approved before the deadline for comments to be submitted had expired. The Clerk would ask Babergh for an explanation. • Annual Parish Meeting This would be held at 7.30pm on Wednesday 25 April, in the Village Hall. Following a suggestion from the Chairman, the Clerk would invite a representative from the Air Ambulance to give a brief presentation. • Armistice 100 The Suffolk Royal British Legion had written to all parish and town councils about an event they were organising to mark the centenary of the 1918 Armistice in November 2018; the Chairman confirmed that he was already working with the PCC on this. Centenary of the end of the First World War In commemoration of the end of WW1, 100years ago, St Andrews Church is looking for any memorabilia or items to display over Remembrance weekend in November. If you have any photographs, medals, certificates, uniform...etc we would be very pleased to hear from you. IAs part of that commemoration we are also making a poppy waterfall from the altar in the church and are looking for more volunteers to knit the poppies. Nice relaxing thing to do – not too challenging If you can help with either of the above please contact: Christine Hempstead on 01473 810171 or email: hempstead91@hotmail.com Layham’s Village Spring Clean On Saturday 24th February we were delighted to see 38 volunteers carrying out a variety of tasks as part of our Village Spring Clean. We owe a huge vote of thanks to them all for their enthusiasm and hard work. As well as litter picking, village property was cleaned, barbed wire removed, a village green edged, a pavement cleared to improve access and an overgrown river-bank cleared to improve the views of our lovely countryside. Most of the litter collected was packaging from take-away meals and drink containers; sadly we also had to report some fly tipping. Apart from this we are pleased to report less litter than usual thanks to parishioners who dispose of rubbish carefully and who go out and collect it on a regular basis. We also thank Babergh District Council for providing black sacks and for picking-up the rubbish afterwards. Last year BDC provided a litter picking kit consisting of hi-vis jackets and litter pickers which we share with other local Parishes. Our Volunteers: Lower Layham litter picking: John Cryer, Martin Looker, Mike Kelly, Elaine and Nigel Pye, Sybil and Bill Paton. Upper Layham litter picking: Sarah Martin Ward, Guy Lawrence, Sue Curran, Julie Garwood, Nathan Spalding, Kayden Spalding, Brian Moyes, Peter Garnett and Sheila Roberts. Clearing alongside Brett Green River Bank: Sonia and Richard Groom, Doreen Sillett, Rosie Lawrence, Amanda and Paul Cartlidge and Christine Hempstead who provided tea. Clearing pavement on the Hadleigh Road from Upper Layham: John Curran, Charlie Panting, Graham Coleman and Michael Woods. Edging Brett Green: Ron Gunn, Brian Strutt, Sylvia Miller, John Nightingale, Alan Garwood and Jeff Adams Removing barbed wire from playing field: Bob Sillett and David Martin Ward Cleaning village property: Brian Smith, Lesley Garnett and Jill Line. Clearing mud and weeds from Water Lane: John Byham Layham Playing Field 100 Club Sorry – the winners shown last month were publicised as February when they were, in fact, January. February winners were: £25 Ticket No 4 Roberts, £15 Ticket No 59 Frolish. March winners were: £25 Ticket No 12 Dodson, £15 Ticket No 83 Cranfield From the Layham Archive This advertisement dates from 1965 and shows an ‘artist’s impression of bungalows that were planned for the Brett Green development. Is it possible that anyone living in Brett Green now bought one of the new homes and is still living in it? If so, did you take any photographs at that time or have you kept the deeds? It would be valuable for future historians for copies of these to be kept in the village archive. If you can help, please contact Michael Woods on 823798. Thank you.

Suffolk County Councillors’ grants support Citizens Advice Hadleigh outreach sessions Thanks to generous donations from the Locality Budgets of Suffolk County Councillors Robert Lindsay and Mick Fraser, Sudbury & District Citizens Advice are able to continue their monthly advice sessions at The Ansell Centre Hadleigh until June this year. Colleen Sweeney, Chief Officer of Sudbury & District Citizens Advice, said “The Councillors’ donations are really appreciated as we know that for some people lack of suitable transport and the cost of travel can be a barrier to seeking our help with everyday problems. We always encourage people to seek our help as soon as possible to prevent their problems escalating further and being able to provide a local service helps to address this”. Hadleigh Town Council have previously helped to support the advice sessions but further financial support is needed if the sessions are to continue beyond June. Until then, regular drop in advice sessions will be held on the first Thursday of each month from 9.30 to 12.30.

We need your readers’ help to support our bid for a large piece of sculpture for the town as tribute to Hadleigh’s woolly heritage and a legacy of the Year of the Sheep. We have got through the first round and now the benfactors want evidence of enthusiasm for Hadleigh and an indication of the community spirit within the town. Your words and thoughts would be much appreciated. Please say briefly • Why you like living in Hadleigh. • Is there an obvious community spirit in the town? • Why does the town endear itself to you? • Any other positives you can think of? Send your comments to Jan Devey: deveys@btinternet.com Many thanks, in advance, for your help. Jane Haylock, Jane Snowdon, Carole Burne, Jan Devey The Hadleigh Legacy Trust

Dear Sir, The cemetery extension is on the agenda for the Annual Town Meeting to be held on 24th April 2018. It is now in its final stages and the work will commence soon. I should make clear that I am not opposed to the cemetery extension, but have protested for the way the project has been managed by the Town Council. It has been the subject of much contention within Hadleigh Town Council over the past year. Some Councillors pushed for a public consultation but we were advised by the Town Clerk that it was unnecessary as the Town Council had a duty to provide the cemetery and there was no support for it from the majority of Councillors. It is the view of some Councillors that this matter has not been dealt with democratically and that they have been excluded from fully participating in the decision making process. It is on the agenda for the Annual Town Meeting and there will be an opportunity for the public to ask questions. I urge you to attend and do so, bearing in mind the very significant cost of it and the long term debt to be incurred for a development. Contrary to the recorded minutes printed in the Community news that all work to be carried out for the cemetery extension would meet British Standards, it does not. The original professional specifications produced by experts were altered by a few Councillors without approval of full Council, to reduce the cost significantly, resulting in steep gradients that fall short of Government Guidelines on Disability by more than 50%. To date there has been no consultation with insurers to confirm they will provide full public liability cover for the cemetery extension in consideration of the revised specifications, despite confirmation by the Town Clerk that there had been. I urge you to attend the Annual Town Meeting on 24th April 2018. Cllr A Young

Dear Sir, There has been much criticism in the press and on social media about the support given to the Guildhall by the Town Council. The loss made by the Feoffment last year was exceptional due to a drop in wedding bookings and the increasing costs of services. Most years the Charity has managed to balance the books or made only a very small loss. The Charity is not the only public facility in the town to receive Council funding. Although it has no obligation to provide any sporting facilities in the town the Council purchased Layham Road around 40 years ago. It is reasonably well used but the cost of maintenance far exceeds the income and the Council has been paying thousands of pounds every year to make up the difference. The Council is also committed to rebuilding the changing rooms at an estimated cost of £500,000. A number of years ago a referendum was held in which people in Hadleigh voted to contribute a percentage of the local council tax to support the swimming pool. This sum of £30,000 is deducted annually at source by Babergh. It has been ring fenced to provide a lump sum towards the building of the new pool and to help pay off the loan required for the new pool. I believe we are fortunate to have these facilities in the town which between them are of benefit to all of the people of Hadleigh. Jane Haylock

Dear Sir, I find it very frustrating that Howard Gibbons should use his advertorial in the HCN (March 2018) to bemoan about St Mary’s Church being “bare” of pews and replaced with “spindly wooden chairs”. There are still many fine pews in our church and the flexibility of the new chairs allows this beautiful building to be used for a wide variety of events. Mr Gibbons should look at all the positive work being done at St Mary’s: The Porch Project, Craft & Produce Market, HADS Productions, Café Church, Art Show, Concerts and much more. The pews were removed four years ago, this old news, as a thriving community we need to be more positive and start looking towards the future. Stuart Service

The Suffolk Villages Festival Spring Concerts 2018 Sunday 29th April 2018, 6.00 p.m. at St Peter’s, Sudbury Margaret Faultless violin Steven Devine harpsichord Johann Sebastian Bach: Sonatas for violin and harpsichord Our series of Bach’s chamber music continues with sonatas from the great set for violin and obbligato harpsichord BWV 1014-1019. With these groundbreaking works, written in the early 1720s, Bach modernised the Baroque trio sonata, elevating the role of the harpsichord from accompanist to equal partner with the violin. They have always been admired for the exhilarating drive and energy of their fugal fast movements and the lyricism of their adagios. Steven Devine also plays Bach’s scintillating Italian Concerto and the rarely performed Aria variata all maniera Italiana BWV 989, a youthful anticipation of the Goldberg Variations. Margaret Faultless is one Britain’s most distinguished and sought-after violinists specialising in period performance. She is co-leader of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, Head of Historical Performance at the Royal Academy and Director of Studies for the European Union Baroque Orchestra. Steven Devine is the leading British harpsichordist of his generation, and performs regularly at the Festival. He plays a copy by Colin Booth of a harpsichord made by J.C. Fleischer of Hamburg in 1710, the sort of instrument used by the Bach family. Box Office: www.suffolkvillagesfestival.com 01206 366603, box@suffolkvillagesfestival.com

In this article we remember: Arthur King Ramplin 26 April 1918 Arthur William Abbott 27 April 1918 During the Great War the Royal Navy operated ships called Q-ships. These were heavily armed merchant ships with concealed weaponry, designed to lure the menacing German submarines into making surface attacks. Serving on one such ship, HMS Bombala, was Hadleigh man, Leading Seaman Arthur King Ramplin. It was a dangerous operation particularly if two submarines were working together and if the Q-Ship was alone and this was the case with the ‘Bombala’ who on 25 April 1918 was operating northeast of the Cape Verde Islands. At 10:15hrs a German submarine was sighted off the Port Quarter, the alarm was sounded and all hands prepared their guns. Fifteen minutes later a second German submarine was sighted off the starboard bow. Both submarines then opened fire and 'Bombala' hoisted the White Ensign and as the submarines came closer returned fire with her 4 inch gun operating to port and the 14 pounder to starboard. After firing some thirty rounds the submarines got the range and the 'Bombala' received numerous hits and suffered casualties amongst the 59 man crew. The gun battle lasted for two and a half hours. With the ‘Bombala' ablaze the captain ordered all hands into the two serviceable life boats. The submarines (U-153 & U-154) then came alongside the life boats and the Germans took one British officer prisoner and it was learned that the U-Boats had suffered seven men killed and four wounded in the action. The two life boats containing a total of forty six survivors were then set adrift. They separated a day later, one never to be seen again. The remaining boat drifted about under the blazing sun for eight days and on the morning of the ninth day made land in the estuary of the Senegal River, but only fourteen men remained alive, the rest having died from the effects of starvation and thirst. Most were too exhausted to leave the beach where they had landed and only two men subsequently managed to find assistance from local Arabs and they eventually reached Dakar. They were the only two survivors from the ‘Bombala’. Arthur had perished. He was born in 1887, lived in New Cut, educated at Bridge Street school and on leaving school he worked at the coca matting factory in Duke Street. In 1902 he joined the Royal Navy as a boy entrant and received training at Devonport, Shotley and Chatham. His trade was as a gunner and he travelled the Empire. He saw action when the German Grand Fleet attacked Hartlepool in December 1914 and later transferred to HMS Africa and was involved in the protection of convoys off the West African coast. He joined HMS Bombala in July 1917. Arthur Ramplin is remembered on the Naval Memorial at Chatham, Kent and on the Hadleigh War Memorial. Back on the Western Front the German’s were continuing their major spring offensive. In contrast to their initial attack (OP MICHAEL) around the largely uninhabited areas that surrounded the old Somme battlefield, the second offensive (GEORGETTE) which started in April was launched further north in the more densely populated areas around the River Lys. And it was here that the allied line around the town of Le Basse was weakened as the Portuguese troops defending the line deserted allowing the Germans to advanced.

Reinforcements had to be brought in which included machine gunners from the Tank Corps. One Hadleigh man known to be involved was Private Edwin ‘Eddie’ Botwright serving with the 11 Battalion Tank Corps. Eddie was born at 76 Angel Street in 1898, he went to Bridge Street School and enlisted at the age of eighteen into the Suffolk Regiment Reserve. In June 1917 he volunteered for the Machine Gun Corps (Heavy Branch) which turned out to be the Tank Corps. Tank numbers had been dramatically increased following their success at the Battle of Cambrai in November 1917. Eddie’s 11 Battalion arrived in France on Christmas Day 1917. By early 1918 tanks were becoming a common site on the battlefield and on 23 April 1918 the first ever tank-versus-tank battle in history took place around the town of Villiers-Bretonneux, east of Amiens. Eddie’s battalion was also known as the ‘K’ battalion, K being the 11th letter of the alphabet and the battalion’s tanks all had nicknames that began with K. Eddie’s Mark V tank was called Katinka and in it he took part in the later stages of the Battle of Amiens. At the beginning of September 1918 his battalion were attempting to pierce the Hindenberg line close to Haucourt south east of Arras when Katinka was destroyed. Eddie’s colleagues were killed and he was badly wounded in the left arm and head and was evacuated back to ‘Blighty’. He returned to Hadleigh after the war, moved to the other side of Angel Street, married and lived the rest of his life at number 83. He died in 1985. Private Arthur William Abbott was the only Hadleigh man known to have been killed during the Battle of the Lys. He was born William Arthur Abbott Martin in 1892, the son of Peter Abbott of Elmsett and Annie Martin of Hadleigh, their home was 179 Angel Street. Arthur went to Bridge Street School. In 1911 he was a carrier’s labourer and that same year he enlisted with the 4 Suffolk territorial battalion. In 1913 he married Lottie Goody and they had one daughter. Lottie came from a large family and lost two of her brothers during the war. Arthur was mobilised with the 4 Suffolks at the outbreak of war, however he was not sent to France until after the Army Service Act of January 1916 which made overseas service compulsory. He was transferred to the 1/4 Suffolks and sent to France. In August 1917 he was transferred again, this time to the newly amalgamated 12/13 Battalion of the Northumberland Fusiliers and was with them at Passchendaele in 1917. In early 1918 he spent some time in hospital suffering from trench foot, but by April he was back in the front line with his unit on the Messiness Ridge near Wytschaete. On the 26th they suffered very heavy enemy shelling and sustained many casualties. Arthur’s body was lost on the battlefield and he is remembered on the Tyne Cot Memorial in Belgium and on the Hadleigh War Memorial. GREAT WAR NEWS APRIL 1918 (as reported in the Suffolk and Essex Free Press of the day)

Wed 10 Apr Eddie Botwright of the Tank Corps sends another of his bright and cheerful letters in spite of the dangers and hardships he is experiencing. Wed 17 Apr During the last fortnight several Hadleigh boys, upon attaining the age of 19, have been sent across the channel with drafts to their respective regiments. Wed 17 Apr A Hadleigh soldier with the Middlesex Regiment and a bed patient in a divisional rest station close to the front line writes, ‘In the early hours of the 21st March I heard a terrific bombardment open and it sounded like our guns, I rather enjoyed the thought that Fritz getting it in the neck. Soon however news came that a big fight was in progress and seventy of the Royal Army Medical Corps staff were detailed as stretcher bearers and afterwards thirty more. I heard later that twenty five of these lost their lives. At 11am the station was cleared and we were off in a convoy of motor lorries’. (The man gives a detailed account of travelling sometimes on foot, sometimes by lorry and how after 48 hours they eventually reach a Red Cross train and evacuation).

Lunch Bunch was enjoyed at Prezzo’s, Sudbury this month. Plenty of discussion and hilarity round the table as members enjoyed the traditional Italian cuisine on offer. A pleasant lunch only marred by the establishment’s inflexibility with the final bill and addition of a so called ‘optional’ service charge. We will not be rushing back, if at all. Monthly Meeting: The title was intriguing “Did the Sewers Save (L to R) Dr Anne Folan Lives? The more explicit subtitle and Chairwoman Liz Wilson was Public Health in Ipswich 1840 – 1911. Dr Anne Folan has studied this subject and with the help of some very telling documentation demonstrated that the introduction of sewers, together with a source of clean water, did save lives especially of children. It was a most informative talk which the audience enjoyed more than they had expected on arrival. It was also one of two evenings this club year when invited guests were welcome and the gender balance in the room changed ever so slightly. Poppies: The first intake of poppies arrived and the Fidelis Poppy-ometer was created. Amazingly, the addictive clicking of needles these past few weeks produced 235 knitted flowers. More next month. Quartet: Sadly only three brave souls weathered the snow to see the stage version of this well-known film. Happily it was well worth the effort. Cinderella: There was great disappointment as ballet lovers were unable to reach the Theatre Royal, Norwich to enjoy Matthew Bourne’s modern take on this traditional fairy tale. The lack of transport thwarted all attempts to reach Norwich and return to Hadleigh after the performance. Disappointed ballet lovers much appreciated the 20% refund given by Theatre Royal, Norwich. Did the earthquake of 22nd April 1884 damage Raydon Church?

Significant cracks have been found in the roof space above the Chancel Arch at St Mary’s, Raydon. This allowed movement to occur in the surrounding plaster, leaving unsightly cracks and falling debris. As a result of several years fund raising, and several generous donations, enough money has been found to undertake the repairs. Thanks also to a generous grant from the Landfill Communities Fund, which is managed by Viridor Credits Environmental Company, a long-term worry for the Parochial Church Council is now satisfactorily resolved. The work was undertaken by John Partridge and his team at PNJ Builders Ltd. They have previously worked on creating a lavatory in the church, which has given much confidence that the project would be undertaken in a timely, professional manner. Church Architect, David Whymark, provided his support and expertise. The Churchwardens said “Thanks to John’s efficiency the work was complete in time for the Baptism of the great grandchild of one of our loyal parishioners”. Everyone in Raydon is now hoping there will not be another earthquake for many years to come! Simon Tennent

Hadleigh Bowling Club Teams are playing the last few games in the indoor Stone Street League before the top four pairs go in to the finals on 4th and 5th April. Current front runners are John Martin & Di Miller, Peter Miller & Maria Barrand, Mick Barrand & Isobel Waddle, and Ray Austin & Pam Linge, though it looks possible that Robin Beard & Barbara Bourner may take that important fourth place. Bowling is a lot about making choices, getting your lines and weight right, and positioning. And how better to get some early practice in before the start of the new season than facing a table full of delicious cakes at a preseason get-together. It’s never simple you know. One misjudgement and you could easily miss your chance. So, seriously, how did you think bowlers got their eye in before the start of the new season? Club members turn up on 7th April to get everything ready outside and the green continues to get expert treatment ready for the opening day drive on 24th April. Anyone interested in trying their hand can always phone Jan Austin on 01473 828212 or come to the Open Days on 28th and 29th April.

PROCEEDS WILL ENABLE ST MARY’S TO BE ALIVE AND ACTIVE IN THE COMMUNITY

Hadleigh Community Primary School Music All the children are working very hard in their weekly music curriculum lessons. Early Years have been recognising high/low notes while learning about tempo and dynamics. The Nursery children have enjoyed playing a variety of percussion instruments and working on 4 beat patterns. Weekly class lessons in Key Stage 2 have seen good progress in the interrelated dimensions of music with lots of listening, appraising, composing and performing. Key Stage 1 – Year 1 Year One have been studying new and old toys and were lucky enough to have a visit from Miraiker and her wonderful selection of puppets. They were able to use puppets which were over 100 years old and spent some time ordering the puppets chronologically. After watching her Three Little Pigs show pupils devised their own shows and performed these to the class. Parents and grandparents were invited in to share our end of half term woods visit. After den building, digging, popcorn eating, wool wrapping and a story, we were treated to a flurry of snow which delighted the children and adults alike. World Book Day Despite the snow, the staff and pupils at H.C.P.S. enjoyed an exciting World Book Day on the 1st March. The week was dedicated to books, with each year group choosing a story to read through the week and focus their work on. In Year 1 the focus was Little Red Riding Hood; the children heard different versions of the story and thought about other stories where the wolf was the bad guy! Where the Wild Things Are was the chosen story for Year 2. The children in Year 3 read George's Marvellous Medicine and devised some very marvellous mixtures of their own. Year 4 studied The Fox and the Ghost King and made some beautiful origami foxes. Year 5 read The Boy Who Sailed the Ocean in an Armchair, a thought provoking and moving story. Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet provided the focus for Year 6. On World Book Day the whole school came together to share a story. The day started with Mr Pilkington reading Little Red Riding Hood to the whole school, then each class was challenged to write a section of the story. Thank you to all pupils, parents and carers for the time and effort they put into the wonderful costumes. There were some very innovative and interesting ideas which demonstrated the wide range of stories and books the children have read. We raised £237 which will go directly to buying new books for our school. Sport Four pupils represented HCPS at the British Schools Milano Trio Competition, which was held at Marks Hall Sports Centre in Harlow. There were three elements to the competition; individual floor, vault and group floor routine. With over 50 schools from the Eastern Region it was very competitive. The girls performed their routines and vault extremely well, and were placed 7th in their age group. A big thank you to Hadleigh Stars and Sarah Bartholomew for all your support. We entered a Year 5 team into the Year 5/6 Sportshall Athletics festival at Hadleigh High School recently. There were five other schools participating in the competition and during the morning, each boy and girl took part in two track and two field events. These events ranged from relays, obstacle races, throwing events and jumping events. Our boys and girls both managed to finish in 1st place in their respected events, which meant overall, Hadleigh won the competition. Well done to all the Year 5's that took part, a fantastic effort! HCPS recently took part in the Hadleigh Schools Swimming Gala at Hadleigh Leisure Centre. In total thirteen schools entered the competition. Each school competed in backstroke, freestyle, breaststroke and relay races. The atmosphere inside the Leisure Centre was electric! Our team swam brilliantly and we finished second overall. Well done Year 5 & 6, a great achievement!

Dementia Awareness Week is coming! May 19th - 26th As more of us are living to a ripe old age, we are becoming more aware of the challenges that come in later life; most of us know someone who is affected by dementia - friend, neighbour, parent, spouse... What was once a feared and misunderstood condition is one we are becoming better at living with. We have learned that many of the most worrying aspects of dementia are caused by people not knowing how to respond or help, so we can all make a huge difference every day. This is why the Hadleigh Dementia Action Alliance has been working for two years now to make Hadleigh a friendly place in which to get older. In that time we have signed up 39 Dementia Friendly Businesses whose staff now understand better how to serve their customers who are finding it difficult to stay independent. We have trained nearly 1800 Dementia Friends who now understand better how they can make life a little easier for family, friends and neighbours. We are now supporting local social groups - churches, lunch clubs, physical activities - to ensure their activities are inclusive of people affected by dementia. And in May, Dementia Awareness Week is a great opportunity for the whole community to find out a little more about how they can help or get involved. We’ll be at the Hadleigh Show, right at the start of the week, so you can come and ask questions, pick up leaflets - and plant a seed! We’ll be holding info and awareness sessions at Ipswich Building Society, Paddy & Scotts and the Market. And we’ll have open social sessions in the Ansell Centre and other locations. And even a quiz night at the British Legion to raise funds. There really is something for everyone! So keep an eye open for news nearer the time; and if you want to know more about the regular activities, or how to help during the week, please get in touch: hadleighdementiafriends@ssleisure.co.uk We look forward to meeting you in May

Newton Green Golfers Help Transform Dog Owner’s Life Representatives of a golf club that raised ÂŁ8,000 toward the training of a dog have witnessed the moving passing out ceremony of the animal. It was four years ago that captains at Newton Green Golf Club led the raising of the money for the Canine Partners charity. Now, black Labrador Trent has settled in as an inspirational friend and support to wheel chair restricted Robert Davies, of Wales, and was one of seven dogs honoured in a passing out ceremony held in Leicestershire. Present were former golf club captain, Andrew Johnson, and his wife Lizzie, who is the recently elected ladies captain at Newton. Andrew explained: "Initially, a puppy spends around 12 months being socialised by a puppy parent in their own home. Then it goes to the charity headquarters for about five months of advanced training, during which time it will be matched with Andrew Johnson, Robert Davies someone on the charity's waiting list and Lizzie Johnson with Trent and trained to their needs. “The dog then goes home with their partner and the charity's aftercare department make regular visits to help with the settling in process. Once the partnership has settled a passing out ceremony is arranged. “Following his serious illness, Trent’s new owner had reached a desperate situation and did not go out to speak to people. He is now so pleased, as the dog has made him a different person. His wife Sarah is also incredibly grateful. The dog has transformed their lives and was very moving to hear this.â€? Along with Andrew, Newton’s women’s captain Sue Thurgate and seniors captain Mike Norton led the fund raising at the club.

Racing, training and the legend that is Mike Rosbrook. This month saw one of our most stalwart and oldest members celebrate a milestone birthday. Mike Rosbrook who has been a valued and much loved and respected member of the Hadleigh Hares since the nineteen eighties was joined by a large group of clubmates at Clare Castle park run to mark his 80th birthday. Mike’s running career spans decades and to still be putting in the miles at eighty is a tribute to his dedication to the sport, to the Club and to his own fitness. I know there are many of us who aspire to be as fit Mike now, let alone when we get to his stage in life! Mike, you are an inspiration and a credit to the Club and we all wish you many happy returns! You are a legend! In other news…. Despite the cold snap, the Hares have been busy again this month. The road racing highlights were the Tarpley 10/20 and the Cambridge Half Marathon. These races are traditionally seen as good tests of fitness for those in training for Spring marathons such as London and Brighton. In the Tarpley 10 mile race, John Scaife finished a brilliant 8th over all with a time of 59 minutes and 29 seconds which placed him second in his age category. Rachel Bodsworth finished 4th in her category with a time of one hour and thirteen minutes, while Kitty Rigby, Sarah Watkins and Jaqui Cobbold all raced strongly, flying the flag proudly for the Club. Six Hares entered the 20 mile race with Scott Ramsey being the first home in a storming 2 hours and 12 minutes, putting him in overall 15th place. Dan Widdowson, Simon Fenn, Oliver Riches, Aaron Durrant and Joanne Sargent all placed well and are looking good for great marathon performances later in the spring. Not content with taking part in the Tarpley 10, Jaqui Cobbold decided that it would be a good idea to compete in the Cambridge Half Marathon just a week later. Along with Beckie Bowen and Claire Mortimer she came in at around the two and a half hour mark after tackling the scenic 13.1 mile course around the beautiful city of Cambridge. First Hare home, though, was Karl Feagan who completed in just over one hour and forty two minutes. As for the juniors, Ella Bodsworth, the junior captain says “Fifteen junior Hadleigh Hares braved an extremely muddy and challenging course around Holbecks Park on the 18th February. The course is known on the 53-12 circuit to be one of the toughest in the league and this year was no exception. Then came Halstead. Sadly, despite strong performances by our athletes, particularly from Elisa Bostock and Dan Widdowson who were second in the ladies’ and men’s races respectively, we were edged out at the last and have been relegated back down to Pool B. It was a very muddy and waterlogged affair at Halstead which made the going really tough for everyone over the five mile course. In the end, though, strength in numbers saw us overhauled by Springfield Striders despite the Hares coming a creditable third in both the male and female races. And finally. As a club, Hadleigh Hares is also heavily involved in triathlon, and we can boast a disproportionate number of Ironman athletes for such a small town. For those unfamiliar with Ironman, it is a long distance triathlon involving a 2.4 mile open water swim, a 112 mile bike ride and a marathon to finish. This year will again see a number of our members taking part in various

events, the first being Paul Barton who is taking on Ironman Lanzarote in May. Meanwhile, another of our Iron distance athletes, Pat Atwood has written a few words to describe how her latest challenge, Ironman Copenhagen next August, has already taken over a fair chunk of her life. Pat has entered along with her daughter Chloe and fellow Hare Sara Taylor-Balls. Chloe lives in Copenhagen, and Pat went there for a nice quiet 5 day holiday….. “It was a shock. I'm pretty laid back when it comes to training, but Chloe is super keen even though she has a hectic full time job. On arrival, my first necessity was to hire a bike. Bike maintenance is not a priority in Copenhagen but I managed to find one that had both brakes and steering on my third attempt. Then all set to wobble/cycle 40 minutes to a tough 2 hour+ Watt bike session with the Copenhagen tri club and 40 minute cycle back home. Slept well that night. Thursday was a visit to the gym for an hour's bodypump followed by another hour of bodyflow. All afternoon we cycled round the bike shops looking for a tri bike for Chloe. Gym classes yoga and core that evening. Friday was swimming, then another couple of gym classes. Saturday more swimming coached by the tri club, followed by yet more watt bike, and a 5k run. On Sunday we went to an amazing deer park and ran 10k with the Running club. Not exactly with them. We all started together then they were gone! It was so cold I was wearing about 5 layers including a thick ski jacket. Afterwards some, but not me, went into the sea for a quick dip. The following week they had to make a hole with an ice pick. An hour's freezing cycle ride back to the city. Monday I flew home, and thank goodness we were snowed in so I was able to put my feet up for 5 days.” Some holiday! Hadleigh Hares are a friendly local athletics club catering for all levels and abilities from beginners to Ironman triathletes. It is a fun and friendly way of getting or keeping fit. If you fancy coming along and joining at whatever level please contact us at chair@hadleighhares.co.uk or via Facebook. There is a beginners/improvers session every Monday evening at 7pm meeting at Hadleigh Pool, and we run a session for ladies only as well as more advanced running, and mixed ability swimming and cycling sessions throughout the week with our qualified coaches.

Table Tennis News Hadleigh “A” now have an unassailable lead in Division Two being 51 sets clear of second placed Wherstead Comets. Three further wins accounted for Rosary Blue, Ipswich Sports Club and Capel “C”. The Capel game saw maximums from Mike Emmerson and Junior Daniel Young, and a brace from Captain Peter Wright. In the Ipswich League’s Handicap Cup the ”A” team won their semi-final tie at Wherstead by 311 points to 288 and now wait for their opposition team in the Final. Currently there is a delay in the other half of the Draw. Junior Daniel Young had a field day in the Ipswich Championships winning the Division Two title accounting for team-mates Mike Emmerson in the semi-final and Rex Manning in the Final. He also won the Cadet Singles and was losing finalist against Daniel Shelley in the Junior Boys’ Final. Shelley has one of the best averages in the Premier Division. Hadleigh “Owls” continue to hold a mid-table spot in Division Three and the last three matches have resulted in one win, one draw and one defeat. The win came against Ipswich Sports Club “D” with both Rupert Pyett and Dean Abbott collecting maximums. Most promising news is that Tony Hilton continues to recover from a health setback and could make an appearance before the end of the season. The team is expecting some tough final games against two teams vying for promotion to Division Two. Ken Rodwell

Hadleigh United Football Club Sponsored by Hadleigh Tyre Group www.hadleigh-utd.co.uk A young Hadleigh team gained a good win against Saffron Walden with Kyron Andrews scoring the only goal of the game. In contrast, a heavy defeat took place at Gorleston when we conceded six goals. A narrow defeat at Haverhill was a reasonable display. The match against Saffron Walden saw a minute’s applause as a tribute to local committee man Tony Charles who had passed away the previous week after several years of loyal service at the football club. In fact, we have a number of hard working people at the club who do a great job working behind the scenes. The Reserves lost by three goals to one at the Millfield against Halstead. We scored first but the strong Essex team took control in the second half to score three times. Our Veterans are having a good season and they scored nine goals in a big win against Bury in a cup match. Our Vets are winners of their league. The Veterans also gained a great nine goal win against Phoenix at the Millfield. Our youth team lost at Whitton by five goals to one after a number of postponements in a wet spell. Latest draw winners were John Day and Nick Barwick. Ground Development draw winner was Matthew Prior. Both draws were made by Lynda Ward.

Hadleigh United Fixtures Hadleigh United fixtures for April begin on Monday 2nd at home to Long Melford followed by Godmanchester at the Millfield on Saturday 7th. Thetford come to Hadleigh on Tuesday 10th before Walsham pay us a visit on Saturday 14th. The following Saturday 21st we travel to Great Yarmouth and then Wroxham come to us on Saturday 28th. The Reserves go to Wivenhoe on Saturday 14th and then go to Saffron Walden on Saturday 21st. A trip to Woodbridge follows on Tuesday 24th. The Youth Team are at home to Wanderers on Wednesday 4th and then go to Felixstowe Thursday 12th. A trip to Woodbridge takes place on Wednesday 25th. That leaves a few fixtures for all three teams in early May.

Suffolk Rockets Netball Club

A lot of people ask, why is Netball a winter sport? We have no idea! The juniors missed a league game due to the snow and we did need to cancel a training session, however for the next month we are training indoors due to scaffolding on the courts so at least we are nice and warm.....for now! The two Junior teams continue to go from strength to strength in the Colchester Junior League, Cosmic Rockets continue to sit in 3rd place and Saturn Rockets in 4th. On 8th March it was the battle of the Rockets with Cosmic V Saturn, was a really good competitive game with Saturn just taking the win 12-9. On 15th March Saturn played KATs Kestrels and despite a slow start Saturn won 11-6, Cosmic played KATs Savannah Meats who are top of the table, at half time there was only one goal in it however injury struck Cosmics which saw KATs take the win 16-7. On the 24th February the Junior players were invited to a match play session with the South Development Netball Academy, the girls did really well playing nearly 2 hours of solid games. The girls really enjoyed the challenge and they took away a lot of positives and areas to work on. We are now looking for girls who will be school year 7s in September to join us next season, if interested please contact the club for more details on taster sessions. Our Ladies/Back to Netball sessions continue to be as popular as always, we have two adult teams taking part in a Back to Netball Tournament on 25th March and some friendly matches booked in, its important that we ensure the ladies have match play to put into practice what they are learning. Our sessions are always open to new players, just turn up Wednesdays 8-9pm Hadleigh High Sports Centre. We are pleased to announce Tara Corbett will be joining the club as Assistant Head Coach, this is fantastic news for the club and players. Tara brings a wealth of experience and knowledge, and we welcome her with open arms. suffolkrocketsnc@hotmail.com. FB/Twitter - Suffolk Rockets NC https://suffolkrocketsnetballclub.weebly.com

The Diddy sessions, for 3-5 year olds, restart on Saturday 28th April - 10:15 - 11:00am, £3 per session. To reserve place, or further information on either session, contact Gavin Peters at Strikersltd@aol.com

Hadleigh Cricket Club Sponsored by Celotex As I write this, less than four weeks before the start of the new season, snow blankets the Meadow. It takes quite a leap of the imagination to think it possible that we will be bowling cricket balls on April 14th rather than snowballs, but such is the British weather that by then we will probably be in the middle of a heatwave. It has been a quiet winter at the club – perhaps mercifully so after the stresses and strains of last winter’s building work. Our indoor men’s side defended their title in the Gainsborough League, winning all ten games. The Ladies side were unable to pick up a win through their indoor season but they remain a positive outfit, keen to practice and develop their cricketing skills. We look forward to the new season as always, although it will be without the familiar antipodean twang of a many-sweatered Aussie or Kiwi getting used to a Baltic English spring. Unfortunately the tightening of visa restrictions by the Two Counties League has made it impossible for the club to add an overseas player to its 1st XI squad. One only has to think of the 1,000 runs scored last season by Brock Price – admittedly, one of the best we have ever had - to realise how much difference such a player can make. However, we will certainly not be alone and captain Ben Wallis has worked hard to add to his squad, and one player we will be looking out for is Chris Gange, a top order batsman who joins us from Somerset Premier League side Bridgwater. We are also lucky to have a core of 1st XI players that have now been together for seven or eight seasons, and are consistently good performers in Division 1. Elmstead showed last season what can be achieved with a team ethic and there is no reason why we cannot be challenging in the top half of the table. Our Ladies team are also looking upwards after their encouraging first season. Sophie Barber will captain the side for the first time and their season starts on May 6th at Maldon. Outdoor nets will commence for the men’s Senior teams on Tuesday April 10th. If you are interested in playing for the Men’s senior sides please contact club Secretary Gary Wiles (07503 966452). Junior signing on evening will be at the club on Friday April 13th. If you are a parent and are looking to get your children involved in cricket please contact Junior Chair Val Gladwell (07739 480059). Gary Wiles
