What does Christmas mean to you? Lots of people who don’t have a Christian faith still enjoy the season of “goodwill” not least because they are off work, able to spend time with their families, eat great food and the TV tends to be better than usual.

It’s traditionally a time to give and receive. It was lovely to see the senior citizens of Hade Edge enjoy their Christmas lunch. They were able to sit together in The Bay Horse, share a meal, a bag full of presents and some wonderful music provided by the Hade Edge Community Choir. It was a tremendous example of local people supporting one another and I can confidently say everyone, young and old, left the pub that afternoon feeling better than when they walked in.

We should thank all those who enabled it to happen. Those who supported the Gala (which funds the dinner), Brindon Addy who provided the meat, John and Dawn for cooking and hosting at the pub, Charlotte Earnshaw for organising and invites, Helen Craggs for doing such a wonderful job with the gift bags and the Community Choir for providing such inspirational entertainment. There are others who contributed to make the afternoon such a terrific success. To everyone, thank you.

Events like the senior’s lunch feed the soul, we all benefit from knowing our neighbours and getting involved in our local village. Christmas is a great time to meet people and join in with the community that exists in Hade Edge. The Band is playing carols around the village from 6pm on 18 th December. Join the procession when they come past your door and are finishing in the Bay Horse, come have a singsong, drink and chat.

Simon Wood the bandleader is performing a very special Christmas Edgy Session event on Saturday 22 nd December from 8pm in the Bay Horse. He and other musically gifted friends will be playing a series of Christmas songs, be warned, by the end of the evening there’s no chance of sitting quietly.

I really hope that those in the village make the most of what is going on. It’s all too easy to think that such things are “not for us.” If you do feel like that, come along to the HEAR committee and help us organise alternative events.

Whatever you do, please get involved and help us all to make Hade Edge a great place to live.

NATIONAL WOODLAND TRUST TREES The ‘trees’ are here, although they are very small (about six inches). With this in mind, we have taken advice and “heeled them in” in a sheltered location for the winter with a view to planting them in spring.

News from your local Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT) The Valleys As lead for policing in the Colne and Holme Valley I am grateful to be able to write a small but hopefully informative article for The Breeze newsletter.

The Valleys NPT are based at Holmfirth Police Station. They brief and debrief from there prior to going to their beat areas.

There are 3 teams which make up your local NPT which work from 8am through to midnight and 2am on a weekend.

Each team is lead by a sergeant.

Each Ward area is allocated a dedicated PC & Police Community Support Officer. Hade Edge falls within the Holme Valley South Ward area.

I would like to start by letting you know crime is down in The Valleys area especially in the Holme Valley area and bringing it right down to an even more local level Hade Edge has also seen a reduction in crime whether it be Burglary Dwelling, Criminal Damage or auto related crime.

This is not just down to my staff, it is a combination of working together with local residents to drive down crime by making property more secure by fitting sash jammers, locking doors and windows, setting alarms when properties aren’t occupied.

Vehicle crime is down due to vehicle owners not leaving property on display which alleviates any temptation to a “would be thief”.

As we are now well into autumn and dark evenings; it’s a timely reminder to leave a light on if you are arriving home from work after dusk, again it may give the impression that your property is occupied.

If you require any advice on crime prevention or any crime matter please contact one of my team on the below number, they will be more than happy to call and provide information at no cost. We are also able to supply sash jammers at cost (£3.00 each). These are available at Holmfirth Police Station.

Sash jammers are an excellent additional form of security at a reasonable price. They have successfully prevented access into other properties around the Holme Valley.

Colleagues from The Valleys NPT have been out and about with the “speed gun” in and around the Hade Edge area speaking to motorists and if the speed requires issuing a Fixed Penalty Notice.

They have also spent time at the school both in a morning and afternoon. Hopefully you will appreciate that due to other commitments we are not able to be there each and every day.

As Christmas approaches another timely reminder would be not to leave the packaging from your new electrical goods on display by the recycle bin as this only alerts a “would be thief” to the fact that you have a new plasma TV or other item.

LOOKING AFTER OUR BEAUTIFUL GARDEN BIRDS IN WINTER The RSPB is appealing for people to spare a thought for garden birds during the cold snap by giving birds a bit more to eat. Get the kids involved, it’s very rewarding. During winter, freezing temperatures, snow and ice can prove difficult for birds to find enough food. People are being encouraged to leave out high-energy food such as fat balls, dried fruit, cheese and unsalted nuts.

Just a little water, food and shelter can turn your garden into a vital haven for birds.

“If you want to use the fat from your Christmas meat, just cut off the fatty bits before cooking.

Uncooked fat from any meat is perfectly good bird food.” - Erica Howe from RSPB Eastern England.

Our birds are a little bit vulnerable and maybe slightly open to infection in winter… they need to keep their energy levels up. We need to provide food containing more energy and saturated fat content. If you put out the crumbs of your left over Christmas cake and mince pies that will help.

Water is also vital for birds to drink and bathe in. Bird baths can be kept from freezing over using small floating items like twigs or table tennis balls. Recommended food for your garden birds include meal worms, soft fruit, seeds and grain, porridge oats, unsalted bacon, cooked rice, pasta, the insides of cooked potatoes and pastry. Erica says that many birds also become more sociable to improve their chances of survival during cold weather, in fact you may hear a lot of singing from the blackbird!

GARDEN BIRD SURVIVAL PLAN: Put out feed regularly, especially in severe weather. Set up a bird table and use high-calorie seed mixes. This can also be used to put out kitchen scraps such as animal fats, grated cheese and porridge oats Put out hanging feeders for black sunflower seeds, sunflower hearts, sunflower-rich mixes or unsalted peanuts Ensure a supply of fresh water every day. If it is very cold use tepid water, but do not use any antifreeze products Put out fruit such as apples and pears for blackbirds, song thrushes and other members of the thrush family Food bars or fat hung up or rubbed into the bark of trees is a great help for treecreepers, goldcrests and many other species Put up nest boxes to provide roost sites for the smaller birds. They will then be used for breeding later in the year.

WINTER GARDENING While it appears as if all activity in the garden has stopped, there's a lot going on under the soil until it freezes. Newly transplanted trees and shrubs, divisions of perennials, and hardy bulbs are all growing roots, drawing on soil nutrients and moisture around them.

Earthworms and various microbes in the soil are still processing the organic material they're finding. It's important to spread new mulch now -- a thicker winter layer -- to protect plants and soil over the winter months. The idea is not so much to keep the soil warm, as it is to keep the temperature even. Once the soil is frozen, mulch keeps it frozen. So if you have shade trees, convert the fallen leaves to mulch and use it throughout your property. *Cut back dry stems of perennials to soil level after frost to neaten the garden and remove pest eggs and disease spores that may linger. Leave stems with attractive seed heads for winter interest, these & berries on shrubs & trees provide food for garden birds. *Compost dead plant debris to create an organic soil conditioner. Hot, active piles kill weed seeds and disease pathogens; passive, inactive piles do not. Throw questionable plant material in the bin. *Cut off diseased foliage from evergreen plants and shrubs and discard it into the bin. Rake up and discard the old, disease-bearing mulch, too. . Clear out the blackened stems and foliage of annual flowers and vegetables to prevent the possibility of their harboring disease pathogens and insect eggs over the winter. *Mulch perennial and shrub beds with pine needles or chopped leaves. This protects both plant roots and the soil and moderates the effects of extreme temperature changes during winter freezes and thaws. *Mulch bulb beds to protect the soil from shifting and cracking during the winter. Otherwise plants, especially small, shallowly planted bulbs, can be heaved to the surface when the ground freezes. *Dig clay soil to help break it down & add manure compost as you go. When bulbs have finished flowering e.g. snowdrops, now is a good time to split large clumps & replant. It is a good time to buy whilst there are still growing as they establish well & have a better take up than dry bulbs from packets. *Start planning seeds for next year. Wash pots & trays for spring sowing & clean out green houses with disinfectant to remove harmful bugs & diseases. *Lawns…keep removing dead leaves & other debris to prevent blackening & bald patches in spring.

Keep off on frosty days…. BUT WHEN IT SNOWS, DON’T FOR GET TO BUILD A SNOWMAN!!!

Memories of Hade Edge- by Rita Battye My first memory of Hade Edge is starting school aged five years old and walking to school from the Washpit valley. Education began in the village in 1882 in the Sunday School with the present school being built in the early 1900’s. Therefore the Centenary of Education here was celebrated in March 1982 with many former pupils and their families travelling from far and wide.

A service was held in the Chapel and the children performed a pageant depicting life 100 years ago. Refreshments were served in the Sunday School and day school for more than 200 people and in the evening a film show was given by Kathleen Lockwood, daughter of Mr Joe Lockwood who was the first Headmaster in the new school. My late father-in-law and his brother were pupils when the new school opened as they were transferred from the day school at Choppards Sunday school which then closed.

At the time I started school there were many children who had come to live at Magnum with their families from London during the war. Many of these settled in the area and never went back. Magnum was a village in its own right with a church and a pub. Everything was demolished in the 1950’s. There was also houses at Old Magnum which were situated further back on the moors. One person whom I remember living there was Mr Charlie Stubley who used to drive cattle to market in Holmfirth for farmers before there was transport to take them. He was very kind, never had to hit the animals as they just seemed to go where he wanted them to. He was a true gentleman.

When we moved to Hade Edge in 1948 it felt so good living near to school. There were three shops, the Co-op at the corner of Greave road and Dunford road, Helms grocers and Post Office supplying farms with their corn and the Fish and Chip shop at the top of Greave road. The Co-op shut in the 1950’s, the Fish and Chip shop soon after when the owner retired. Helm’s shop was the last one to close in 1989. There was also a sweet shop in Mrs Brookbank’s house (opposite the band room) and children used to call for sweets after school.

On Sunday mornings my friends used to call for me to go to Sunday School. In the afternoon we went to the Chapel Service which was well attended in those days. We appeared in the children’s concerts, singing, acting and dancing on the stage. As we grew up, many of us were asked to join the choir and once a year enjoyed the choir trip to the seaside. After the Chapel anniversary services in July, the bandsmen from Hade Edge band used to meet on the common opposite the Bay Horse and give a concert. Crowds of people came to listen and enjoy the atmosphere and the weather always seemed good.

Both my husband and his father have played in the band, his father joining in 1908 aged 10 years old. My husband joined in 1945 aged 9 years old. The band played for Sunday School feasts where they walked around the village with a long procession behind them singing hymns in various places. There were dances held in the Band room regularly with the best of the year being a dance on Christmas Day evening. It was always crowded as there was nowhere else to go

Christmas Day. In the past I am told, there were eight pubs in Hade Edge, mainly kept in business by the quarry workers who had a long walk to work and back. They worked extremely long hours in a dusty environment and so they would be very thirsty in the evenings. Along Dunford road there was the Sportsman Inn, another at the White Abbey (name unknown), the Roundclose Inn just off Dunford road and further up the Junction Inn. There was also the Road End Pub at Magnum and the Weathercock Inn past where the Cook Study Monument used to be. Along Penistone road was the Moorcock Inn. Sadly, only the Bay Horse remains today and all the others either demolished or turned into houses.

I have many memories of bad winters in the 1960’s, 70’s, and 80’s, especially 1963 and 1979. I remember the children being sent home from school on many occasions when the snow started drifting. In February 1979, we dug our drive out every evening and the following morning it was deep drifts again, resulting in my husband walking to work and back in Holmfirth for a week.

However, to compensate for these bad winters, the summers always seemed glorious with weeks of sunshine for us and local farmers to get the hay making done. What a contrast to the last few seasons of relentless wet weather!

Hades Feast Bread Sauce BY MARCUS WAREING (FROM GREAT BRITISH MENU) “The best of all gifts around any Christmas tree: the presence of a happy family all wrapped up in each other” - Burton Hillis Quintessentially British, what Christmas dinner would be complete without bread sauce to accompany the turkey?

Ingredients 550ml/1 pint whole milk ½ white onion, cut into quarters and studded with 3 cloves 2 fresh bay leaves 150g/5¼oz sliced white bread, cut into 3cm/1in squares 1 tsp English mustard freshly grated nutmeg 50g/1¾oz unsalted butter, diced salt and freshly ground black pepper

Preparation method Heat the milk in a pan with the studded onion and bay leaves. Bring to the boil briefly then turn down to a gentle simmer. Add the cubes of bread and stir until it starts to break down.

Remove the onion and bay leaves and whisk in the mustard and a little freshly grated nutmeg to taste. Cook slowly for 10 minutes, stirring regularly. To finish, stir in the butter, season with salt and freshly ground pepper. Place in a bowl or gravy boat, cover with cling film and leave in a warm place.

Hades Feast Fruity Christmas Biscotti BY THE GOOD FOOD MAGAZINE 2008 - GREAT RECIPES Perfect make-ahead gifts, will keep up to a month after baking.

Ingredients 350g plain flour, plus extra for rolling 2 tsp baking powder 2 tsp mixed spice 250g golden caster sugar 3 eggs (beaten coarsely) grated zest of 1 orange 85g raisins 85g dried cherries 50g blanched almonds 50g shelled pistachios

Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Line 2 baking sheets with baking paper. Put the flour, baking powder, spice and sugar in a large bowl, then mix well. Stir in the eggs and zest until the mixture starts forming clumps, then bring the dough together with your hands - it will seem dry at first but keep kneading until no floury patches remain. Add the fruit and nuts, then work them in until evenly distributed.

Turn the dough out onto a lightly floured surface and divide into 4 pieces. With lightly floured hands, roll each piece into a sausage about 30cm long. Place 2 on each tray, well spaced apart. Bake for 25-30 minutes until the dough has risen and spread and feels firm. It should still look pale. Remove from the oven, transfer to a wire rack for a few minutes until cool enough to handle, then turn down the oven to 140C/fan 120C/gas 1.

Using a bread knife, cut into slices about 1cm thick on the diagonal, then lay the slices flat on the baking sheets. The biscuits can be cooled and frozen flat on the sheet at this point, then bagged and frozen for up to 2 months. Bake for another 15 minutes (20 minutes if from frozen), turn over, then bake again for another 15 minutes until dry and golden. Tip onto a wire rack to cool completely, then store in an airtight tin for up to one month, or pack into boxes or cellophane bags if giving as gifts straightaway.

Makes about 72 biscuits

THE VILLAGE CHAMPION - Kerry Sykes – for her inspiration and hard work in creating and running the Holmfirth What’s On Calendar, an excellent on-line calendar of events for residents and visitors to the Holme Valley. Further to this she has created the Hade Edge Village website. Kerry is also recognised for her community work including road safety issues and the lead role with the Parent, Baby & Toddler Group.



THE YOUTH CHAMPION – Aaron Wood – for his personal achievements in music and for his contributions to Edgy Sessions. Aaron is an outstanding musician and has achieved Grade 8 (Distinction). He plays several instruments including trumpet, piano and bassoon. He is a dedicated member of The Hade Edge Band and he teaches at their Saturday Academy.



THE UNSUNG CHAMPION – Brindon Addy – for his continual support of village fund raising work, including the donation of the pig for the Gala pig roast, the meat for the Senior Citizen’s Christmas Lunch and bacon for the sandwiches enjoyed by all those that join us for the village litter-pick days.

Thank you to Kerry, Aaron and Brindon for all they do towards making Hade Edge a great place to live.

The Hade Edge Christmas Fair was a real success ! We had over 8 stalls from local people selling a lovely range of gifts. We raised over ÂŁ350 in total, which is an amazing achievement. Can we say a massive thank you to all involved, from the Raffle Prize Donors, helpers and organisers, stall holders. And most of all, thank you to all those who came on the night, braving the rain and wind, and purchased lots of lovely Christmas presents !

The Hade Edge Baby & Toddler Group and Pre-school have organised a pantomime for the children on Friday 21st December at 10am. The well known Holmfirth's own "Hey Diddles" are doing this, which is tailored especially to little ones, so should be a lovely morning, and we should have lots of happy faces !. We will also be raffling a beautiful Christmas cake from Hade Edge's "Kate's Cakes" on the morning, so if you can't come, but would like to buy a ticket, please ring Kerry on 680235, or come into pre-school to buy a ticket or two !.

We are having our Christmas Party on Tuesday 18th December (10:30 till 12), please ring Kerry on 680235 if you would like to book your place, all welcome !

We would also like to extend our thanks to the Hade Edge Committee for their donation of ÂŁ32 from the Edgy Sessions Acoustic Night raffle, this was spent on a water table for the toddler group, which they have really enjoyed.

Senior Citizens Christmas Lunch The HEAR committee held the Seniors Christmas lunch on the 18th November. The day started with a drink at the bar, followed by sitting down at the tables in the dining room whilst Bing Crosby crooned Christmas songs in the background. A lovely open fired blazed & the room & tables were decorated with holly & ivy.

Next followed a brief speech by our chairman Mr Milburn, who had every one in stitches followed by the pulling of crackers & Christmas jokes. The master chef, Mr John Sharp, served up a choice of turkey or beef with all the trimmings, followed by trifle, Christmas pud or apple crumble. Coffees were served with chocolates & mince pies (courtesy of The Chocolate Box & the lovely Mrs Moorhouse). The consensus was that the meal was a definite hit, truly delicious.

Next came the handing out of presents, which again was much appreciated by all, their bags were stuffed full of fantastic gifts.

As the seniors relaxed, the fabulous Hade Edge Choir entertained them with half an hour of wonderful songs. They sang like Angels & even had the audience joining in. They were fantastic.

The HEAR would like to say a massive thank you to our very own Butcher Brindon Addy for the most generous donation of both the beef & the turkey for the meal.

He is a true gentleman. Also a big thank you goes to Dawn & John Sharp for their hospitality in making the day a wonderful event. Thank you to the lovely Charlotte Earnshaw for her help in organizing the event. Thanks also to Richard Slack for being Manuel from Faulty Towers for the day, (& helping in the kitchen) & to Leigh & Helen for being such super waitresses. Last but not least THANK YOU to all of our lovely residents for donating such beautiful gifts for the Seniors Christmas bags, they were over the moon. You made our Golden Seniors very happy people. News From The Old Wooden Hut The long nights are well and truly among us and Christmas snowballs its way up Dunford Road, I can tell its nearly Christmas because we have what feels like a hundred band jobs to squeeze into 24 days!! Personally speaking I love Christmas, I love playing, as musicians its easy to forget how much pleasure people get from listening to music and it really is a privilege to touch peoples lives.

Our Jazz Collective are now world famous on YOUTUBE, following their performance at Marsden Jazz Festival, thanks Camera Colin. We had a busy day, dashing straight to Elland with the Youth Band where they won Best Youth Band and

Well done Nick. The day was finished off with a race night at the band room. Concertina and Accordion band entertained while the horses had a rest and we all ate pies until Thursday…….

The Old Folks Treat were entertained by our Community choir, and I think its fair to say that it was a "right good do". Certainly judging by the bag of goodies everyone went home with it was!!! (I didn't get one, I'm only 32) By the time you read this our Youth Band and Senior Band will have played at The Brass Factor contest, our schedule not made any easier by the oncoming Senior Band Christmas concert, yes, you've missed it, it was last Sunday. But honestly, it was amazing……

Its always a pleasure to forge our links with the school and the Panto at the band room was once again very exciting. Cinderella had a few microphone problems but it didn't spoil the fun and a great time was had by all.

December 15th is our Academy concert at the civic in Holmfirth. Its always a busy but glorious night- please join us.

December 18th, Tuesday, is the night when temperatures plummet to -6 and we come round the village carolling. Come and sing with us or prepare some hot mulled wine as we freeze our way round!! Hot mulled wine…….. Don't forget, Tues 18th- HOT MULLED WINE. Finally on the 22nd December some of our Academy groups will be playing at the Bay Horse, this is a pub in Hade Edge, shady characters etc…. Anyway, from about 8pm our Rock School will be giving their world premiere gig, the concertina and accordion band will be playing, then me and my lads will be finishing the night off in party mood. Interspersed throughout the evening will be traditional Christmas Carols. Should be a great night. Contact me if you're not sure how to get to the pub, I have directions…...

Cooking Tips  Pre heat your oven on full heat, roast at 190’c or gas mark 5(or 170’c for a fan oven) Place your turkey, breast side down in a roasting tin. (Cooking breast side down until the last half hour keeps the breast meat succulent while the brown meat cooks evenly). There is no need to use butter or bacon on a Turkey if you don’t want.

 Quarter a peeled onion & a cored apple. Place both in the body cavity of the turkey.  If stuffing your turkey, fill the neck cavity only & recalculate your total cooking time to include the extra weight of the stuffing. Stuffing can also be cooked separately, but we do not recommend stuffing the body cavity!!

 Sprinkle salt & pepper over the turkey & cover with foil (Turn bird & remove foil for the last 30 minutes.)

 Cook for approximately 15 minutes per lb then remove when the bird has reached 67’c internal temperature (An 11lb bird will need about 3hrs)

Carving Tips  Remove turkey from roasting tray & allow to rest in a warm place for 15-30 minutes for a better carving experience. Drop your knives in at the shop before the 16th of December and we will sharpen them free of charge.

 Cut the breast meat from one side at an angle following the breast bone, repeating on the other side only when required. Carving on an angle will make the most of the grain of the meat.

 Don’t underestimate how much delicious meat can be found on the sides of the bird, close to the backbone – here can be found the ‘oysters’ (a succulent round piece of meat)

 Hold the turkey leg by the knuckle & twist off while cutting close to the body, to expose the dark leg meat. Carve this meat into thick slices & separate the drumstick, taking care to carve around or remove by hand, the 2 or 3 thin sharp tapered bones which are parallel to the main leg bone.

 Remove the wing by twisting close to the body & cutting between the joint, not through the bones. Cut in half, then carve or pull away the meat from the bone.

 When you think you’ve finished carving your turkey, leave the carcass to cool (if it isn’t already boxing day!) & remove the remainder of the meat from the bone by hand, to store for sandwiches. Keep the carcass for soup!

The Senior teams. Our first team is top of their division having not lost a game so far this season and the second team is doing very well. The morale of the third team is growing and the intention is an upward move!

The Juniors have all had a reasonable start to the season with plenty of good results. With the mini soccer there have been less fixtures and results have been more variable than the older groups, but all the teams are enthusiastic and the club spirit is electric.

NEW CLUB HOUSE Our fund raising has been very successful during this last two months, both with the Harvest Auction which raised £1300 and with grants from Kirklees and from Lloyds TSB banking group.

We are grateful to all the support we are receiving from everyone.

We now have a builder and a contract and much depends on the weather from now on.

FOOTBALL MANAGER’S REPORT—UNDER 11s TEAM We currently have two teams in the Huddersfield District, the Lions in Division 5A and the Tigers in Division 5B Last year (season 2011/2012) We finished low on the league table although we had a really good season. We got some new players through the course of the season and also lost a few so it was hard to form a constant team and we lacked a bit of team work. We started the season off with 13 players and ended with 18.

Current season (2012/2013) We started the season off with 15 players and there was also a lot of interest from other players from different clubs including Upperthong and Hepworth. We currently have 27 players in both under 11 teams. Both teams have very strong players and are playing very good football. There is a good buzz from all the players and in the club itself.

Lions Team I, (Iain Caselton) currently manage the Lions team and I am loving every minute of it. We are sponsored by “Fuel Doctor” (owned by Mandy and Pete Mitchell). I try to let the kids enjoy themselves and we aim for a good atmosphere both in training and during matches.

Tigers Team Simon Matthews manages the Tigers team and he too shares the love for the game. This team is sponsored

by Masala Lounge (in Holmfirth). The kids all seem to enjoy themselves and they have a positive attitude.

Both Tigers and Lions train together on Wednesdays, from 6.00pm to 7.30pm at Holmfirth High School sports centre.

Lions - Recent four matches.

Clifton Rangers at home - won 8/0 Man of the match - Jack Valentine Hartshead at home - won 7/2 Man of the match - Ben Mitchell Gomersal & Cleckheaton cup match at home - won 5/0 Man of the match - Tom Bamford Almondbury Lions away - lost 6/3 Almondbury Lions are currently at the top of our league and have not yet lost a game. We played some of our best football during this match.

Man of the match - James Bailey Hade Edge Lions are currently 4th on the league table and are also through to the next round in the cup.

Games won – 5, lost - 3 There are 4 Hade Edge under 11 players that are currently also part of the Man City / Sheffield Wednesday training development centre.

Hade Edge Tigers, Hade Edge were able to form two under 11 teams this season with two new coaches (Simon Matthews & Chi Lok), joining Hade Edge from Upperthong. We also had several new players join from Upperthong & Hepworth. The new coaches agreed to run the Tigers with some of the new players and several old Hade Edge players, with a squad of 12 players. This has proved very successful as the Tigers are currently third in the league after 8 games, having won 5, drawn 2 and lost 1.

Our coaching ethos across both teams is inclusive, not win at all costs, with all players, whatever their ability getting lots of game time which builds confidence and ultimately benefits the team and the child.

THE GENTLE BUILD TO CHRISTMAS AT HADE EDGE SCHOOL Head Teacher Jeff Kilner reports…

It started back in mid November, we heard the rustling of tinsel being delivered, costumes and decorations were being taken off shelves and dusted off and Mr Higgins was humming some ‘interesting’ Christmas songs. The journey towards Christmas is now gathering speed as Class one have begun rehearsals and the humming has developed into children singing. We have even seen glimpses of the occasional costumed Class one child getting themselves ready for the production of ‘An out of this world Christmas’. Our actual performance dates are- Tuesday 11th December at 2pm for elderly residents, Wednesday 12th December at 2pm and Thursday 13th December at 6pm.

Another date for the diary is our last day of school as we have planned a Christmas Carol Concert.

After speaking to parents and residents of Hade Edge and some of our long standing staff members I would like to re-establish a tradition from when Mr Bamforth was Headteacher of school. I hear That Mr Bamforth would carry the decorated tree out of school for an outdoor carol service.

Therefore, we plan (if Hade Edge weather allows) to hold our carol service in the outdoor pavilion on Friday 21st December at 2.30pm. You are welcome to join us as long as you wrap up warm and agree to join in with the singing!

I think that our children will be ready for some rest and relaxation over the holiday period then will be back in to a new school topic about Europe with a strong focus on geography. This topic will be supported with many events, after school clubs and activities.

Well, as we near Christmas we are looking back at what has been quite a busy term for us working with the children at school. We hope that they have enjoyed the disco that they had in October and the visit from the theatre company in November ( I suspect a lot of the adults that came along enjoyed it too!) We would like to thank Simon for letting us use the Band room again and also Ocado who very kindly donated all the choc ices that we were able to give to the children.

We are only able to provide things like this, that enhance the children’s school life, because of your constant support and generosity at our fundraising events.

The recent bags to school collection raised an impressive £150 so thank you to everyone who brought a bag to school. The next collection will be in May.

Over the last few weeks he children have been busy learning and rehearsing seasonal songs that have been recorded onto a CD. They are having a competition to design the cover of the CD and then it will be available to be ordered at a price of £4 each or 3 for £10 through the Friends Group. All profits from this will go towards curriculum enhancing items for the school. Michael Henderson As we get close to Christmas I want to comment about how well mannered the children of Hade edge are. What makes me say this is how polite and caring the children were on Trick or Treat night. Again I was pleased to be called on by children who said please and thank you and were not greedy in the amount of sweets they chose, I had to insist they take more on the evening. The children are to be remembered and I want to take this opportunity to say thank you and well done to the parents for their upbringing of these children.

Brass Factor Contest -30th November 2012.

Both Hade Edge Youth and Hade Edge band competed in the 2012 Brass Factor contest held in Holmfirth on Friday 30th November at The Picturedrome. An exciting performance by Hade Edge Band won the judges and audience vote and they were awarded the Brass Factor 2012 trophy.

Road Safety Update – The Response from Kirklees Council Below is an extract from the response letter from Kirklees Council Streetscene & Housing.

PETITION 996: HADE EDGE VILLAGE, SPEEDING PETITION – Hade Edge Parent, Baby & Toddler Group “At the moment, based on the low accident record, we do not have any plans to provide any traffic calming on this section of road. I have assessed this road for other measures as you suggested in line with our council approved matrix. This basically takes factors such as speeds, accidents, location into account. The request for traffic calming scored at +3. For us to investigate further we would have to score it at +4.”

“What we are intending to do is upgrade the 30mph speed limit gateways to make them more visible. This includes better signage and road markings. This should be on site before the end of the financial year.”

“Prior to the petition being submitted, your Local Ward Councillors agreed to fund a speed indicator device (SID) that will rotate around various sites within your ward. They have chosen Dunford Road at Hade Edge as the first site for the sign. The location on Dunford Road still has to be confirmed however.”

Editorial Welcome to the winter edition of “THE BREEZE”, the magazine of H.E.A.R. (Hade Edge Action for Residents) committee. Firstly, may I say a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all our readers, contributors and advertisers.

As I sit at my desk today and look out of the window over Bowshaw, there is no doubt that winter is once again claiming the landscape. The wind is howling and the snow is beginning to settle on the fields. The choppy, wind stirred waves of Bowshaw are breaking white, like a rough sea, a far cry from the dead calm, blue waters with multi-coloured dinghy sails of only a few weeks ago.

However, these extremes in weather are a part of life in Hade Edge that many complain about, although this may be part of its appeal. Walkers, cyclists and many other visitors to the area can be seen most days, irrespective of the weather, so I think we must have something quite special here.

Despite our “breezy” location, I believe that Hade Edge is a great place to live and one of the main objectives of “THE BREEZE” is to promote and communicate the positive effect that we can all have on improving life in the village. We have some great groups in our community, most of which are represented here in “THE BREEZE”. The success of these groups is down to the hard work of enthusiastic individuals, who don’t count the many hours of free time and other contributions that they give to the community. “THE BREEZE” is the place to inform readers what you’re doing, to ask for help and let everyone know what you’ve achieved.

We like to hear about life in the area, past and present and we’re always looking for stories and photos illustrating life as it used to be, so if you have anything you are willing to share with us, please get in touch. We’re also interested in what’s happening on a day to day basis, so let us know if you have anything interesting or amusing to include in “THE BREEZE” Dave Lloyd

November 2012 If you missed Novembers Edgy Sessions set you missed out!

The first act up was Martin Christie & friends with their folksy, thought provoking tunes to get people into the spirit. Martin & friends provided some fantastic acoustic guitar work accompanied by some inventive use of voice effects.

The second act of the night Decca was truly outstanding; Decca sang many favorites with audience participation including Whiskey in the Jar and Always Look on the Bright Side of Life amongst many others. He cracked ample jokes and had us all in stitches! Decca even had our resident compare Mr. Richard Slack stumped for words!

The final act of the night was the beautiful voice of Irene Pirrera. Irene is absolutely spellbinding to watch and brings a calm and relaxing air to the venue. She is a pleasure to watch perform every time. (Heather Ainscough)

December 2012 This months Edgy Sessions was certainly one to remember. We were treated to some fine talent, started off by the terrific Matt Bentley. He played a selection of his own songs about everyday life and partway through his set he asked his girlfriend Steph Stephenson to join him onstage and sing his own number ‘King of Leeds’ whilst he accompanied on Ukulele. He also did a bluegrass style cover of Silent Night, which was something to behold. A very talented individual.

Next up was the brilliant Alex Quinn And The Man In The Street, a folky trio with hard rocking roots. The audience were tapping their feet to their lively acoustic set and they even did a superb cover of ‘Born to Run’ by Bruce Springsteen. For one of their songs, the drummer played a Cahon, which added an intimate feel to what was shaping up to be a brilliant evening.

Last but by no means least was the wonderful Roger Davies. Roger has played Edgy Sessions before so one or two people were able to sing along to his popular songs, written about local landmarks and people. These songs included ‘Brighouse on a Saturday Night’ and ‘Huddersfield Town’. Roger has been dubbed ‘The Yorkshire Songwriter’ by critics and gets given regular airtime on BBC Radio Leeds so we are privileged to have such musical talent on our doorstep for free.

This months Edgy Sessions also raised a lot of money on the raffle, and a Christmas cake and Christmas Hamper were auctioned off to further boost the Gala funds. All in all £117 was collected which is a spectacular effort. (Joe Brereton) DON”T FORGET……..Simon Wood’s Christmas special is on 22nd December. Starts 8pm. Be there, for A Christmas Extravaganza!!!
