HADE EDGE BREEZE Spring 2023

Tel No 01484 684924
Hope you are all well.
They use to say ‘If a snowflake fell in Holmfirth, 4 foot of snow would be landing at Hade Edge’ thankfully that has not been the case so far this winter in Hade Edge.
Christmas was well represented with our band playing round the village and finishing at The Boshaw Trout, Father Christmas on his sleigh, Christmas lights on the green.
Now is the time when we all look forward to Summer and our holidays, but before then Spring is close to hand. Days become longer, nights shorter and our village comes alive with, Crocus and snowdrops in the gardens and daffodil displays in the road verges. The first lambs are appearing in the fields and birds are busy nest building.
Arrangements for Our GALA are being made, the first since Covid, put the date in your diary, Saturday 8 h July on the Football Field. Later in the Autumn a Halloween trail is being planned.
At the time of writing a defibrillator demo is arranged for the 22nd Feb at the Football Club, a further date may be arranged for anyone who is interested and could not attend on the 22nd .
Issues discussed at our Feb Meeting were, traffic movements, particularly Heavy vehicles on Dunford Road, Flooding at the Junction of Penistone Road-Scholes Moor Road. None existent bus service to Hade Edge. Access Gate Dunford Road onto Hade Edge Rec. Wild Flowers on the Green.
You may remember last year the village took part in a survey in the hope to help improve the village bus service
We received a reply from the West Yorkshire Mayor Tracy Brabin
“The Mayor has made clear throughout her term that improving West Yorkshire’s buses are her top priority and is currently going through the process to bring buses under greater public control, which includes considering franchising options. Greater public control would enable us to have much more of a say over how public money is used to support services”
The HERA committee have been helping to improve road safety in and around the village. Some local road signs in Hade Edge have come into disrepair and Kirklees council have been notified to help replace a number of damaged signs. We encourage you to help keep our roads safe.
Due to a clash with Honley Show on the 1st of July we have changed the date for the Hade Edge Gala to Saturday the 8th of July. We appreciate any volunteers who would like to help with preparations for the Gala and help with running the day. This is a fantastic asset for the village and it really does take a village to run such a fabulous event. Its been 3 years since our last Gala and we would love to make it memorable .
We are introducing a new column to the Breeze magazine. If you have any interesting historical stories about the village and surrounding areas please share @ hadeedgebreeze@gmail.com
Hade Edge common 1974.
Thank you to the Year 3/4 class at Hade Edge School for your wonderful artwork for the front cover of the Breeze. It was definitely challenging to choose a winner as they were all worthy.
Keep and eye out for the summer challenge edition!
My name is Win Harrison you may have seen me and my wife Karen in and around the local areas especially in Holmfirth. Karen and I moved to Holmbridge from Essex in August 2013, to live near our daughter who was starting her own family and wanted to live near our grandchildren.
With such a big decision, adjusting to a slower pace of life took time and I needed to find a way to fit into new surroundings. So, after a meeting of solar minded people in Holmfirth that wanted to make our town a nicer place to live, the Holmepride name was agreed by the ensemble of local people.
However, like a lot of groups it needed leadership as it wasn't going to succeed without it. So, 9 months on from the initial meeting, I took over the group as Chair and Karen as Secretary as we knew we had to become a constituted group which allowed us to apply for funding using our groups bank account.
After 5 years, we are going strong with new volunteers coming forward of all ages, genders and abilities, everyone can join us by emailing us at hello@holmepride.co.uk or by message to :- facebook.com/holmepride come and join us.
I am extremely proud of what we have achieved and couldn't do it without the help of others.
Welcome to our committee for 2022/23

If you live in Holmfirth or visit regularly, you will most likely have noticed small, significant improvements around the town – graffiti disappearing, benches being renewed, flower baskets outside of businesses. Many of these improvements are thanks to Holmepride Community in Action. The group was founded in 2017 with the intention of bringing together like-minded people who want to make all aspects of living in Holmfirth better. What they have done for the Holmfirth community
Hidden in the garden outside Holmfirth Methodist church, there is a blue box filled with children’s books. This is the Book Swap Library, installed by Holmepride-CiA last October with sponsoring from the Co op’s “The Fres Group”.
Local people can borrow, take or donate children’s books (for over ones) that are in good condition.
The library encourages young curious minds to engage in more reading and is a wonderful secret gem to discover when visiting Holmfirth.
After Holmepride-CiA spoke to The Fresh Group, they even agreed to sponsor three more libraries, which are now located next to schools across the Holme Valley (
The libraries thrive on community participation. Feel free to drop by when you are passing and maybe even take or donate a book!
In October 2022, Holmepride-CiA gave their garden in School Street a makeover. It is near the Book Swap between the church and Co-op carpark. The 90’ x 3’ strip of earth had been taken over by HolmeprideCiA in April 2022 with the intention of showing the difference that the work of local volunteers could make to community areas.
Children are encouraged to touch and smell the herbs to experience that they can be more than just plants, Win says.
With sponsorship from the Co-op, £300 of plants were planted. Together with The Fresh Group, three tiered herb planters, three bug hotels, and a stick library for dogs were built.
Your opportunity to help:
Donations of good excess fruit or vegetables are welcome and can be dropped off. The stand displays local produce for anyone to help themselves.
Together with Holmfirth Edibles, a new produce display stand providing local produce to local people was built. It is made from old pallets and thus is entirely from recycled materials.
It is in the Holmfirth Edibles Community Garden, near 19 Huddersfield Road.
Cleaning up the town HolmeprideCiA contact Kirklees Highway Department about faded roadsigns who then replace them.
Members of Holmepride
CiA remove graffiti around town.
Works in progress:
- Reusing the old Phone Box:
Last year, the phone box on Towngate square was refurbished. Holmepride-CiA has thought about using it to promote local events by putting in brochures.
- Further improvements on the garden in School Street will be made
- There will be a mural of the Holmfirth silhouette on the wall of the house next to the Holmfirth Edibles produce display. We will keep you posted.
- Holmepride-Cia is hoping to get a free repair station. It will be at towngate carpark. How you can participate
Upcoming event: Woodland clearing
As soon as the weather improves, there’ll be a woodland clearing event at Hepworth Junior Infant School. There will also be a gazebo, hot drinks and biscuits.
A similar activity will also be at New Mill Junior School to help with their woodland area and pond clearance. All welcome!
Donate spare bulbs
They can even be collected from your doorstep.

As we have new residents throughout the Village it was felt that re issuing this information is essential.
It has been a few years now since donations from Hade Edge residents, The British Heart Foundation, Hade Edge Residents Association, Holme Valley Memorial Hospital League of friends enabled us to provide 2 AED Public Access Defibrillators, for Hade Edge Village which so far have not had to be deployed.
I would like to inform and remind everyone of the locality of the Defibrillator’s positions and the procedure if one may be needed in the event of a Cardiac Arrest.
One is located at the Hade Edge Junior and Infant School outside the office in the main carpark. Access is through the main car park gate (always open).
The second is located at the Hade Edge Football Club by the main door of the clubhouse, adjacent to the Pitch, with access through the small gates on either side of the Building.
PLEASE FAMILARISE YOURSELF WITH THE LOCATIONS
On approaching the closest defib to the emergency (school or football club) the person needs to ring 999 to inform the operator of the location of the patient and the defib they have gone to. The operator would then give the code for the defib cabinet door to be opened so the Defib can be carried away. Once back on scene simply follow the straightforward instructions given by the Defib itself.
It is essential CPR is started immediately if a patient is found to be unresponsive and not breathing and do not stop CPR until the defib is made available to attach to the patient.
The whole process is straightforward and easy to follow & if anyone would like instructions or a demonstration on CPR and the use of the defib I would be happy to go through it either individually or as a group. I also have mannequins you can practice on, or DVDs you could borrow.
Like the unfortunate event at the Euro 2020 Football Competition, a cardiac arrest suffered by Christian Eriksen made us aware that it can happen to anyone at any time!
A Restart a Heart Campaign was run again this year through secondary schools & up to 300 pupils from each school took part making them now potential life savers, familiar with CPR and defibrillators.

Have you found Tommy the Trout yet?
Thank you to the Breeze team for allowing me to write a few lines for the Spring Edition. As your Member of Parliament, it’s an absolute honour to represent our beautiful part of the world. Let’s hope there isn’t a sting in the tail weather wise as we head towards Springtime.
Amongst the many issues Hade Edge residents have recently contacted me about are concerns about speeding. I’ve been running a road safety campaign which has seen me meet the Mayor of West Yorkshire and the Chief Constable to ask for more action. In the past week I’ve spent a day with the Neighbourhood Policing Team doing speed checks. I’ll keep campaigning on this important issue.
I’ve also been working hard in the Houses of Parliament supporting major Government investment in our area. I’m delighted the new £15million A&E unit will open at HRI in the summer. Gigabit broadband is being rolled out, Greenhead College have started construction on their £25 million Hirst building and the multibillion pound Trans Pennine route upgrade is well underway. Kirklees Council are consulting on major improvements to Holmfirth town centre spending Government cash, I just hope they’ll invest in the indoor market rather than demolishing it for a few extra parking spaces.
As ever, my team and I continue to deal with hundreds of issues every week so please get in touch if you need my help with any issue. The phone number for my constituency office is 01484 443975 or you can email me at Jason.mccartney.mp@parliament.uk, alternatively you can write to me at the House of Commons, Westminster, London, SW1A 0AA.
Best Wishes
Jason McCartney MPWhat an exciting and busy half term we have had at Hade Edge School. When planning our curriculum, we endeavour to bring the curriculum to life by exposing the children to as many real-life experiences through the use of trips and visitors. Take a look at some the wonderful opportunities our children have been exposed to in the past 6 weeks…
In January, our Year 5 and 6 pupils enjoyed a wonderful trip to Sheffield Arena, where they took part in the annual ‘Young Voices’ concert, which included a guest appearance from Heather Small of M People. A fantastic time was had by all!
Our LA Governor, Kay Davies has been in to school to work with a group of children to promote the love of reading within school. Together, the children have created some informative posters which have been displayed in school to encourage others to read, read, read.
We have been absolutely thrilled to welcome Jane in to school to work with children to enhance our after-school provision. Look at some of the wonderful work created…
Dr Hemmings (Sheffield University) has been in to school on numerous occasions this half term, to work with all children throughout school. The children have enjoyed bird spotting as well as making bird feeders to encourage more birds to visit our school grounds.
We were very excited to welcome a variety of owls into school. The children loved watching the owls fly in our hall and some of our younger children even had the opportunity to hold one.
Children in Years 3 and 4 enjoyed a visit to Holmfirth Library as part of our week of activities focussing on positive mental heath and wellbeing.
Mr Kaye is a regular visitor to Hade Edge School.
This half term, he told us a parable and he reminded us how precious everyone is. As always, we then all enjoyed a sing along.
