Anglo American Renews Local Education Programme With R510m Investment Diversified miner Anglo American has launched the second phase of its education programme in South Africa, doubling the programme's scope and commitment to improving educational outcomes, investing an additional R510-million into the programme as it progresses. The next phase of the programme will support an additional cohort of 84 schools and about 80 early childhood development (ECD) centres in Limpopo, the Northern Cape and North West over the next five years. Of the total investment, R110million will go toward enhancing access to quality school infrastructure for learners and teachers. Over the past four years, the education programme has improved the quality of education for 222 000 learners and 3 391 teachers at 109 schools and 110 ECD centres. This was achieved through investing more than R100-million a year. Anglo American South Africa chairperson Nolitha Fakude says that, by doubling its investment and targeting specific outcomes, the miner is going beyond simply acknowledging the fundamental right of every child to quality education, and is “making it happen”. Undertaken in partnership with the Department of Basic Education, the education programme is integral to Anglo American's Sustainable Mining Plan, which commits the company to a holistic range of ambitious goals that are shaping how its stakeholders experience Anglo American’s business. These goals include how the miner creates thriving communities by focusing on better health, education and employment opportunities for

communities around its operations. Anglo American states that ensuring all children in its host communities have access to excellent education and training provides an essential gateway to tertiary education and will ultimately help increase the employability of young people throughout their working lives. Fakude adds that, by supporting access to better education and school infrastructure, creating sustainable jobs and contributing to brighter and healthier futures, Anglo American is delivering a lasting positive contribution, supporting communities to thrive beyond the life of its mines.

Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga says the department recognises that partnerships are key to resolving some of the challenges South Africa’s education ecosystem faces as a result of its vast basic education sector. “Therefore, our partnership with Anglo American is a tangible example of what can be achieved when business and government partner to make a lasting difference, especially in education, which is the country's priority focus.” She adds that the

Further, despite the disruptions caused by Covid-19 lockdowns, the results of the programme’s first phase showed improved learner performance, above the provincial averages, for participating schools in Anglo American’s host communities in Limpopo and the Northern Cape. In this regard, the matric pass rate for participating schools in Limpopo in 2021 was 76%, compared to the provincial average of 66.7%. Eight out of 32 participating schools in the province were in the top 30% of national school performance, with five schools in the top 20%. In the Northern Cape, schools on the programme experienced a 76.1% pass rate, compared to the provincial average of 71.4%. The number of students that wrote school leaving exams (matric) in 2021 was 36% higher than in 2020 – a time when school dropout rates tripled in South Africa.

Going forward, the miner will invest in several initiatives, including infrastructure upgrades, information and communications technology, learner and parent support initiatives, career guidance, nutrition and food gardens, afterschool programmes and sporting activities in the selected schools. The programme has also set new learner-focused targets, including that 90% of learners aged five meet the minimum requirements for school readiness, that 90% of grade 3 learners pass with at least 50% in numeracy and literacy, and that 75% of grade 6 learners pass with at least 50% in mathematics and English as a first additional language. In addition, Anglo American has also set the target of achieving a 90% matriculation pass rate, with a 50% university entrance, and getting 65% of grade 12 learners to pass with at least 50% in mathematics.

Independent Power Producers ’shot Themselves In The Foot’ Independent Power Producers (IPPs), under renewable energy independent power producer procurement programme bid window 5 (REIPPPP BW5), shot themselves in the foot with unsustainable rates, now making it impossible to deliver power to Eskom, leading to the grid’s prolonged load shedding. Speaking to Business Report over the weekend, South African Independent Power Producers’ Association chairperson Thomas Garner said the programme was in a quandary after producers indicated they could not continue with current rates which required financial close before the signing of agreements with Eskom next month. Solar and wind energy IPPs reportedly bid 37.5 cents a kilowatt hour to secure business when the going rate should have been between 60 to 80 cents a Kwh. “This is a race to the bottom, not all the projects are viable. It is a struggle to make commercial and financial sense. What is needed is a reverse auction to start the projects

afresh, people will lose a lot of money in the process.” The Independent Power Producer Programme (REIPPP) bidding was done in 2021, and the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), which has the same difficulties, in 2020/21, comes at a time when the government is desperate to bring more energy onto the grid. The last two rounds of power procurement in which bids were solicited from the private sector are largely no longer financially viable. The bidders, which set a tariff for which energy will be bought by Eskom, are based on an estimate of input costs. Once bidders are selected, they are bound by the price they offer. “There is a huge risk around the supply of equipment, there is a lot of risk around the commercial and financial sense of the projects, there needs to be a reverse auction of the slots. Why did IPPs tender for a lower rate than they could afford?” Garner said.

Eskom declined to comment, with spokesperson Sikonathi Matshanshta referring questions to the IPP office. “Please direct your questions to the IPP office which procures power from the IPPs. Eskom does not get involved with the negotiations,” Matshantsha said. The IPP office had not responded to queries sent early on Friday. Close sources indicated that IPPs in early 2021 tendered for 37.5 cents per kilowatt hour for the supply of energy to the grid instead of between 60 to 80 cents a KWH which would have

PERDE & PRET NAWEEK

been sustainable despite the global turmoil. The Covid-19 downturns, the Russia/Ukraine conflict, the global economic downturn and other factors since then have however affected input costs. “IPPs took too much risk, now they are holding back progress of the supply chain, the bid bonds will have to be recalled and the process started all over again, it is not sustainable at these levels,” Garner said. - DFA

This Is One Of The World's Biggest Solar PV, Battery Projects - In SA's Backyard operations, Jan Fourie, said that the project has been in development since 2014. At the time, Scatec was planning for it to be part of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP). "Never in my wildest dreams did I think we would be building one of the largest solar and battery plants in the world in our own backyard. This is the biggest project Scatec has ever done. It is a significant milestone for the company," said Fourie. A hybrid solar and storage project in Kenhardt, the Northern Cape has reached financial close. Scatec What is set to be one of the world's largest hybrid solar PV and battery storage facilities around four times the size of Cape Town stadium - is due to start construction, and it is already yielding development benefits for the small Northern Cape Town of Kenhardt. Renewable energy developer Scatec, which is headquartered in Norway, on Tuesday reached financial close for its three projects Kenhardt 1, 2 and 3. It has an installed solar PV capacity of 540MW and battery storage capacity of 225MW/1 140MWh. It will supply 150MW dispatchable power to the grid from 05:00 to 21:30 once it is operational. Scatec has a 20-year power purchase agreement in place with Eskom.

renewables – when there is no wind or no sunshine, then no power is produced. The projects are part of South Africa's Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (RMIPPPP), which was launched in August 2020. The programme aimed to procure about 2 000MW of generation capacity to help address the country's energy supply constraints. But it's been hit by delays, and Scatec's projects are the first among the 11 preferred bidders that were named. The eight remaining projects are at varying stages of preparation to sign agreements, and developments in this regard are to be announced in due course, the Department of Mineral Resources and Energy said in a statement.

These projects are unique in that During a media briefing on Wednesday, Scatec's general battery storage addresses the manager for sub-Saharan Africa intermittency challenges of

The project is 10km wide, side to side.

The project is 10km wide, from side to side. It will include about two million solar PV modules. Construction is expected to take 15 months before power can be fed to the grid. About 2 000 jobs are expected to be created during the construction period. The project is Scatec's largest investment to date. It's capital expenditure is R16.4 billion and will be financed by Scatec (51%) and its black economic empowerment customer, H1 Holdings (49%). About R12 billion will be financed through debt. "It is four Cape Town stadiums, to put it in perspective," said Fourie. Already there have been development benefits. Vodacom set up a tower for allowing communications at the facility and the greater Kenhardt region – an area which previously had almost no signal, said Fourie. The DMRE noted that local communities and enterprises in

and near Kenhardt will benefit through R444 million committed to supplier, enterprise and socioeconomic development initiatives. The projects also commit to 40% local content during its construction and operation. Fourie explained a significant portion of the projects are locally sourced, such as transformers and cables. Solar PV modules, trackers, and inverters are sourced partially locally and abroad. The lithium-ion batteries will be imported. Fourie said the stalling of the REIPPPP project under former president Jacob Zuma's administration decimated the local manufacturing industry. "Where we previously had five or six manufacturers, it is now down to about two." There are supply chain constraints in the market, but Scatec is working with local suppliers to meet the local content requirements. Fourie also noted the global supply chain challenges that drove up prices of renewable energy components. He said that Scatec's supply chain team is aware of the challenges, and there are contingency plans to deal with them. "… We believe we have all necessary contingency plans in place to still meet timelines," said Fourie. As for future project prospects in the Northern Cape, Fourie highlighted that the province's grid capacity is currently congested. Scatec, however, is open to doing standalone battery projects in the province. - News24

Farm Killings: Time For Cele To Open His Bheki All eyes are on police minister Bheki Cele as the farming community desperately awaits an action plan to deal with a dramatic rise in farm killings. The plan, to be implemented as part of the national rural safety strategy, is in the hands of a newly-formed task team.

and integrated way whilst also focusing on the prevention of crime. “Not only the police, but empowering and utilising community structures and other role-players to launch among others, pro-active programmes focused on the needs of communities.”

Following the rural safety summit held on Monday, 27 June, a team with different stakeholders was charged to partner with the police to implement an overall strategy. This, as violent crimes in rural areas continue unabated.

Farm killings on the rise Meanwhile, numerous attempts by Food For Mzansi to seek answer from Cele’s office have gone unanswered.

At the summit, consensus was reached that the task team should submit an action plan to the Cele within seven days. Nearly a month later, farmers and their workers remain gripped in fear with no feedback yet received from the task team. Chairperson of Agri SA’s centre of excellence for rural safety, Uys van der Westhuijzen, however, told Food For Mzansi the team was already hard at work in dealing with concerns raised at the summit. Van der Westhuijzen maintained that in order to address critical issues, words need to be turned into action. “Agri SA is of the opinion that if what was said at the summit, and the tasks given to the [task team] can be done, then that can provide a firm foundation in ensuring that the rural safety strategy benefits all rural communities,” he said. According to Van der Westhuijzen these tasks will go a long way in addressing rural crime in a holistic

Two suspects have since been arrested. In an unrelated incident, two farmers were shot multiple times whilst at the Truck Stop outside Ladysmith in KwaZulu-Natal on Wednesday evening, 13 July. Gerry Khumalo is injured and in hospital while Sibusiso Gama lost his life. Both were thriving commercial-scale farmers. For this incident, no arrests have been made to date.

It will be fruitless to form a task team and not give it resources,” he said. Sitho called on the authorities to work with rural safety organisations across provinces.

“The minute we start bringing politics into the fight against crime, we are missing the point. We do not want to hear about [political] credentials of the person. In other words, visible policing activities, such as patrols and roadblocks. If they are not intelligence-led and targeting specific criminals and criminal networks, they will not reduce crime and have no positive impact on public safety.” Newham said fighting crime needed a collaboration effort by all role players as the police alone cannot do it. “The police cannot ensure public safety alone and need to work in properly managed partnerships with clear goals and protocols for sharing information and undertaking joint tasks.” According to Newham, the police should always be in the lead and ensure that they have the capacity to manage partnerships effectively. - FoodforMnanzi

Heritage Trophy 2022 Richtersveld: 17 – 24 September The Richtersveld UNESCO World Heritage Site hosts this event, which focuses on the rich biodiversity of the pristine and vast desert landscape, the unique fauna and flora and breathtaking views. The adventurous route takes travelers from Vioolsdrif on to Ais-Ais and the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, via the Sendelingsdrif ferry to the Richtersveld National Park in South Africa and the Richtersveld conservation area, ending at Goegap near Springbok. This is a typical selfdrive, self-sufficient overlanding trip in a 4×4 with high ground clearance – no towing allowed. Background on the Heritage Trophy South Africa is a country of pristine natural beauty with vast areas of biodiversity, rich in flora and fauna, from tropical climates to deserts, mountains, plains, hills and valleys, rivers, a 2 800km coastline and a place of many diverse cultures. Our people have different backgrounds and an interesting heritage, some of which has been recorded over centuries with other culture and heritage chronicles being passed on from generation to generation. Scientists and archaeologists

excavate our soil, dig up our past and unearth ancient lost cities. They exhume sacred and ancient graves and analyse and interpret their findings to trace, track and document our ancestral history. UNESCO awarded South Africa with several World Heritage Sites and Biosphere Reserves, recognising our rich fauna and flora and distinct cultures to embrace, protect, and conserve. Follow us on this epic journey to discover the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves of South Africa, to explore its immaculate natural beauty, to discover it’s heritage, pursue its hidden gems and find unexplored places of interest, to uncover its lesser traversed areas, to experience its wilderness and traverse biodiverse protected areas with proper authorisation. The Heritage Trophy is an annual event held during the National Heritage Week around 24 September in South Africa. We will visit all the UNESCO World Heritage Sites and UNESCO Biosphere Reserves in South Africa over the coming years. Every event is a professionally guided overlanding adventure. It is NOT a timed route, a race, testing of

driver skills or a vehicle bragging rights competition, but rather a challenge of team spirit combined with outdoor adventure. On this trip you will apply good navigational skills and gain knowledge on local heritage, nature, fauna and flora, archaeological and cultural history and many other interesting facets of the

Richtersveld. Past event: Limpopo 2021 Our inaugural event was held in Limpopo and it involved a fantastic adventure through the Vhembe Biosphere Reserve. The adventure included special permits for traversing right through the Soutpansberg wildlife protected area and ended up at Mapungubwe where we wild-camped in the Limpopo Riverbed for a night.

Starwors Village - Family-oriented Glamping Campground Starwors in a nutshell... We are a glamping campground located in the heart of the Bulb Capital of the World, Nieuwoudtville. Whether you are a family or a group of friends, we are here to make your stay at Starwors memorable. Our campgrounds are the perfect getaway to a new stress-free secret base on a remote camp on planet Hantam near

Nieuwoudtville called “Starwors”. It is here where an epic battle took place between the evil Imperial “stormpoopers” and a small number of Jedi Knights. Evidence of this battle can be seen at the entrance gate of Starwors. Pull in, ease back and take a load off. Each campsite has its own bathroom, 6m x 4m covered and

paved Lapa with a braai, washbasin, hot water and lights in all bathrooms and private Lapa’s, 12V and USB power for camp fridges and phones (unfortunately, no 220V power points are available), 2 x Toilets and an 8-seater hot water splash pool are communal. We are wheelchair friendly, and your pets are welcome when arranged. We offer a carefree

vacation in the great outdoors. Enjoy robust recreation in the clean fresh air, kick back and relax by the communal splash pool, or braai your favourite “WORS” recipes, all while never leaving the campground. It’s the ultimate glamping camping getaway. Phone: +27 (0) 79 538 6822 Email: bookings@starwors.net

He said: “It (the festival celebrating Haile Selassie) is very profound and essential to celebrate. I became Red Scorpion through being a Rasta youth. If it wasn’t for Haile Sellasie or the acknowledgement of Haile Selassie as the returned Messiah, our God and king there wouldn’t be Red Scorpion. The relationship between Haile Selassie and Red Scorpion is unbreakable. It is unquestionable also. Red Scorpion is the subordinate to Haile Selassie as the king of kings and the lord of lords, right!” The artists promised that the festival will showcase some of his albums that he has created over the years. “It will be a very great show, I promise you. People out there must come and support this initiative which is fundamentally based on social cohesion. It means it is not only a show that is Rasta orientated. But this time we have decided to open it up for the public who can also come and feel the essence and broaden their understanding of who we are and what we represent. The only difference is that we will be doing it through music this time.”

February is normally the rainiest month, with longer, more persistent downpours. Temperatures rise, but the Kalahari bursts into life, with the arid salt pans transformed into nutritious grasslands that entice herbivores. Don’t miss the sight of thousands of Burchell’s zebras migrating from the Boteti River to Makgadikgadi and Nxai Pans. Watch out for mosquitos in March As summer ends, showers are usually limited to refreshing afternoon bursts. Elephants forage in the Okavango Delta as they vacuum up fallen fruit. Water levels might be too low for mokoro canoe trips, but large dazzles of zebras remain in Makgadikgadi, which also means good lion sightings. Still hot and humid, March is the mosquitos’ favorite month, especially around lakes and rivers. The nights get cooler in April Dry, sunny weather starts to replace the showers, although you’ll need to layer up for earlymorning game drives and evenings around the campfire. Wildlife watching starts to improve as the rains from the highlands of Angola roll back into the delta. Antelope mating season is underway, so watch out for males strutting their stuff and locking horns to impress the females.

Wildlife is concentrated around water holes, although you’ll be sharing sightings with more vehicles. In private reserves, it’s also a great time to enjoy guided walking safaris to spot smaller flora and fauna. Between July and September is the best time to hang out with gangs of meerkats in Makgadikgadi. The Okavango Delta fills up with wildlife in August By day, it’s all clear skies and rising temperatures, but nights are chilly, often dropping below freezing. Water levels are at their highest in the delta, attracting wildlife in droves and making this the perfect time for gliding on a mokoro past herds of thirsty elephants. Note that peak wildlife viewing also means peak prices. September means dry weather and excellent wildlife spotting September is dry, hot and dusty, but clear skies and sparse vegetation mean excellent visibility as wildlife congregates at the rapidly shrinking waterholes. Evenings start to warm up too, perfect for a sundowner around the campfire. The heat is on in October If you can stand the heat of October in Botswana, wildlife is easy to spot, especially in the early mornings and evenings: huge herds of elephants around the Chobe River, hippos squabbling over wallowing space and predators stalking the plentiful prey around water holes. Prices are still high but start to drop toward the end of the month. The skies open in November The rainy summer season begins (though it’s not always on schedule) with short, heavy showers throughout the day that begin to turn the parched landscape a vibrant green. November is when many herbivores give birth, attracting the attention of the resident big cats. Temperatures dip slightly – but it’s still hot, so look out for well-fed lions snoozing in the shade and leopards lounging up trees. Prices also take a dip.

Clear skies arrive in May Winter brings clear skies and more moderate temperatures, although you should come prepared for some frosty nights, especially in the Kalahari. With wildlife in search of permanent water sources, it’s an ideal time to head to Moremi Game Reserve, which covers onethird of the Okavango Delta, and Savuti in Chobe National Park. May is also a good time to tie in a Key event: Maun International Arts trip to nearby Victoria Falls, which Festival will be at its thunderous best. itineraries, with some occasionally veering eastwards to see what is left of the Putsonderwater railway siding that has become so ingrained in the South African lexicon.

In the mid-1800s, the area just south of the Orange River was “a lair for rustlers and outlaws”, as legendary South African travel writer TV Bulpin puts it. The various feuding clans and groups of new settlers were hard at it, raiding each other’s livestock to and fro across what is also known as the Gariep River.

There will soon be another reason for overland travellers to stop off at Kenhardt for a day or two. International renewable energy developer Scatec SA is partnering with local clean energy company H1 Holdings to set up a million solar panels on a giant solar farm outside Kenhardt. Together, these warped and majestic quiver trees (kokerbome) are like a collection of giants in various stages of life: young, in their prime and on the point of expiring. Photographers love the Quiver Tree Forest of Kenhardt, because of the unique, gnarled shapes that glow golden in the early mornings and late afternoons. Huldeblyk... In ons graad elf jaar het Chris Whitlow my eenkeer 'n droom vertel. Paar dae daarna gebeur dit toe presies, net soos Chris my vertel het. In die fynste detail, vir my was dit net wow. Ek het vir Chris daarna gevra, bra as jy eendag oor my droom...dan moet jy my dit onmiddellik vertel. Ja dis waar, in elke mens is daar mos 'n misterie. Chris Whitlow was iemand met humor. Ek het onthou hoe lief hy was vir sy pyp en rum and mable twak. Chris Whitlow was en is 'n familie mens. Hy was baie lief vir sy ma Penny, broers en hele familie.

THIS WEEK IN NORTHERN CAPE HISTORY Kuruman Dithakong Battle DITHAKONG – SITE OF BATTLE on 24 JULY 1878 when colonial forces under Colonel Owen LANYON and Colonel Charles WARREN attacked a Batlhaping force which under leadership of KGOSI LUKA JANTJIE had taken up a defensive position amongst the stone walled ruins of a former precolonial settlement spread along a ridge at this place. Leading up to the conflict was the Griqua rebellion of 1878. To the extent that Tswana (Batlhaping) were caught up in it, historian Kevin Shillington notes, they had been responsible for very few acts of violence within the Crown Colony of Griqualand West. However, an attack on and killing of a store-keeper, Burness and his wife and brother, at Daniëlskuil, led to swift colonial retaliation, and a succession of battles beyond the colony’s northern boundary, ending with that at Dithakong. In an action at Kho on 2 July Batlhaping under Kgosi Luka Jantjie defeated the colonial volunteers. The Batlhaping fell back to Dithakong where they were met by a force reinforced by 400 men under command of Lanyon and Warren – who were equipped with artillery. The attack was preceded by bombardment of the ridge, which inflicted many losses prior to the capture of the ridge. Most of the Batlhaping escaped. As Lanyon reported (from Kuruman, 30 July): “Some idea may be formed of the great strength of [Dithakong] from the following statement. The range of hills is about two miles long, and it is covered throughout with a network of walls. The town is situated about half a mile from the western end of the ridge (where the river runs) in a neck, and from it three kopjes on the ridge. In the first of these—about 150 feet above the river, there were 245 compartments, some round, some square, and others of all shapes, all being connected with each other. In the second kopje there were 88 compartments, and in the third, 175, making in all 508. The enemy obstinately defended these places, and

One of the expedition's scribes, Borcherds, Borcherds was of a different opinion, however, when he wrote that those Batlhaping he described the ruins as consulted were unable to give “resembling the houses in the “any satisfactory account of the ruins of a town as large as that of inhabited [Batlhaping] town.” Archaeologist Tim Maggs Leetakoo, which at no very reported on preliminary fieldwork, remote distance of time had finding that there was a clear stood on the heights commanding the valley” (Barrow pattern to the stone walling. “This pattern, now familiar to Iron Age 1806:402). at Dithakong.” FOOTNOTE - the ARCHAEOLOGIST from PALESTINE Dithakong was visited by an archaeologist on 24 July 1878 who, had he appreciated the significance of the site, and initiated research on stone walled settlements and the Iron Age at that early date, would no doubt, as Humphreys (1986) has remarked, have set the development of archaeology in this country on a very different course. That archaeologist was none less than Colonel - later Lt General - Sir Charles Warren, better known in South Africa for his administrative and military accomplishments. Coming to South Africa in 1876 to help define the disputed Griqualand West/Orange Free State boundary, Warren had previously served with the Royal Engineers in Palestine. There he carried out archaeological exploration including a survey of ancient Jerusalem, publishing two books on this work (Humphreys 1986). Warren's South African reminiscences, published as “On the veldt in the seventies” (1902), make no mention of numerous archaeological sites he might have come across in the Northern Cape. Warren was involved in the heavy artillery bombardment of an important archaeological site during the attack at Dithakong in July 1878. Nearly a century would pass before serious archaeological attention was given to this and similar sites. REFERENCES include: Humphreys, A.J.B. 1986. From Palestine to the Diamond Fields.
