ORION Minerals has repaid a long-standingA$1.9m loan to AngoAmerican which is an important condition before the company can access A$31m in funding for its Prieska Copper-Zinc Project (PCZM) and the Okiep Copper Project.

“The repayment of this legacy Loan Facility withAASMF (AngloAmerican sefa Mining Fund) is a very important milestone for Orion and our development strategy,” said Errol Smart, CEO of Orion Minerals in an announcement today

TheA$31m to which Orion is one step closer to unlocking comprises a R250m (A$21m) facility with the SouthAfrican government lender Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) andA$10m in ‘early funding’agreed withToronto and NewYork listed streaming royalty company,

Triple Flag.

As a result of the payment, AASMF has released 29.17% of the shares in PCZM which are held byAgama Exploration & Mining, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Orion. They were pledged as security toAASMF for the performance by PCZM of its obligations in terms of the loan facility, said Orion.

“While quite technical in nature, the release of the security associated with this 2015 funding arrangement is a critical milestone that will allow us to draw down the new funding sources we have put in place with the IDC and Triple Flag,” said Smart.

In March, Orion announced it had raisedA$13m (R80m) through a share issue which sees prominent UK investor Adam Fleming’s CloverAlloys become a cornerstone

shareholder in the copper development firm.

Clover subscribed for 440 million shares in Orion for a total of $6.7m.The balance of the stock was taken by Tembo Capital and Delphi Group, private equity firms with 21.6% and 13.3% stakes in Orion respectively

The offering comes with four options, expiring in

November, which could see as much asA$73m raised –some R884m.

Commenting on the Clover investment, Smart said today: “This clears the decks for us to move forward with our broader funding and development strategy for PCZM, as recently announced”. - Mining Mx

Held of ‘n antiheld?

Hamlet (Shakespeare) is byvoorbeeld ‘n tragiese held. So ook Macbeth, Othello, ens.

‘n Held is ‘n idealis.

bedoelings, byvoorbeeld die Marvel-films se Iron Man.

Held of 'n antiheld?

‘n Held lewe volgens ‘n aanvaarbare, konvensionele morele kode.

Antihelde se motivering is dikwels edel.

Vyf verskillende tipes antihelde

‘nAntiheld is ‘n realis. Die klassieke antiheld

Hierdie antiheld stoei dikwels met self-twyfel en angs, byvoorbeeld Frodo in Lord of the Rings.

Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean is ‘n goeie voorbeeld.

“Comic book fans have loved Wolverine, and all the ‘X-Men’ characters, for more than the action. I think that’s what set it apart from many of the other comic books. In the case of Wolverine, when he appeared, he was a revolution really. He was the first anti-hero.” — Hugh Jackman

In watter genre skryf jy gewoonlik?

Ek skryf gewoonlik krimis, maar ek steek so af en toe my neus in spekulatiewe fiksie in.

2. Noem asb.

karakter in my kop te kry

Dit was vir my 'n nuwe ervaring, juis omdat daar soveel skrywers betrokke was.

Dit is vir my

Market disruptors such as ecigarettes have reshaped how the government regulates and taxes smoking in SouthAfrica.

From 1 June 2023, nicotinesubstitute solutions, including vaping products, will be taxed at a flat excise duty rate of R2.90/ml – illustrating a keen move by the government to extend the tax net over developing and new methods of smoking in the country

However, the biggest player in theTobacco space, British AmericanTobacco (BAT), as well as the Vapour Products Association of SouthAfrica, have warned that the new tax will likely end up pushing prices up by as much as 138%, forcing consumers to the illicit market.

Currently, vaping products are not covered by theTobacco Products ControlAct or the MedicinesAct; however, legislation is now in the pipeline to address regulatory holes concerning the practice.

Parliament is currently considering theTobacco Products and Electronic Delivery Systems Control Bill, which was introduced at the end of 2022 after extensive consultation.

Broadly speaking, the bill aims to further regulate smoking and the smoking industry, including ecigarettes.Through the bill, when it becomes an act, the minister of health will be given authority to designate certain public places and outdoor areas as nosmoking zones and to regulate

the packaging and advertising of tobacco products.

The bill also includes a provision to ban the display of all tobacco products, as well as e-cigarettes, vapes, and heat-not-burn products, in retail settings, including speciality tobacco stores.

Equity analysts Siphesihle Zwane and Varshan Maharaj fromAllan Gray said that similar to government regulation, the tobacco industry never paid much attention to new nicotine consumption methods.

“The industry never invested aggressively in new ways to consume nicotine,”Allan Gray said.

“This changed when JUUL, a vapour brand, began to grow significantly in the United States by introducing innovative products with flavours and marketing that turned their brand name into a verb. This uptick in ‘JUULing’forced incumbents to increase their investment in nextgeneration products (NGPs), a major shift from the stable nature of the industry.”

New methods, including vapour, tobacco-heating, and modern oral products, all look to pose less harm to consumers, which will invariably take its toll on the traditional tobacco market.

According toAllan Gray, most large market regulators saw that the vaping industry’s regulatory advantage would not stay forever, and the proof is now in

the slew of developments in the e-cigarette space.

BigTobacco is now encouraging smokers to quit or, if they cannot do so, switch to next-generation products via various consumer education initiatives, such as stores in malls, said the equity analysts.

“These products are all relatively new, and the current science regarding harm reduction has been positive, showing as high as a 90%-plus reduced risk of exposure to harmful substances. However, we do continue to monitor the science as population studies are conducted to better understand the longerterm impacts,” saidAllan Gray

Major disruptions to the smoking industry have increased the risks associated with tobacco investments that used to be a stable industry for decades.

Risks associated with regulatory changes have not had a

noticeably large impact on tobacco industry earnings yet, but they have caused the sector to trade on a lower multiple of earnings, saidAllan Gray

The potential decline in tobacco sales is a concern for industry heavyweights such as British AmericanTobacco, as smoking rates have decreased while the population has grown.

However, if long-term combustible volumes do not decrease significantly and real price increases are achieved, companies like BATcould see growth in revenue and margins.

Allan Gray added that profit-perstick might improve as more consumers shift towards Next Generation Products (NGPs). Despite the decline in smoking prevalence, the number of smokers has remained stable at between 1 billion and 1.1 billion since 1990. - Business Tech

Preparations For Fourth Botswana/Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Gate Underway

In a bid to improve accessibility into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, the Botswana government is in the process of establishing a fourth entrance into the park.

The development was revealed by Phildah Kereng, Minister of Environment and Tourism, Botswana.

According to the Minister, the fourth entrance would be on the Botswana side of the park, which is jointly owned by Botswana and SouthAfrica.

Speaking during a tour of tourism projects in Khawa on the sidelines of the Khawa Dune Challenge and Cultural Festival recently, she said tenders had been published for the gate’s construction as well as staff houses.

Kereng further said that the gate, which would be an addition toTwoRivers, Kaa Pans and Mabuasehube gates, would enhance adventure tourism and lessen the distance travelled by tourists coming from the side of Khawa.

She said currently, tourists had to go via Bokspits and then use theTwoRivers gate to enter the park.

The new development would half the distance and boost dry land tourism expeditions where tourists could come and

explore the Kgalagadi region’s abundant archaeological, historical, wildlife and rich cultural heritage, the minister said.

Kereng said a route from Khawa leading directly into the park, through the Nossop River as well as Melkvei, had been developed.

Aimed at boosting Botswana’s tourism portfolio through the development of value chains, the route, spanning about 22km from Khawa and a further 35km to Melkvei picnic spot in the park, was developed last year

“We noticed that it is not enough to just enjoy the dune challenge held once a year, the area is rich with natural resources and so it is important to develop it to attract tourists to enjoy other adventures throughout the year,” she said of Khawa renowned for its spectacular sand dune landscape, the dune challenge and cultural festival.

The minister said it was important to develop facilities such as accommodation, road transportation as well as aviation to facilitate tourists in their expeditions.

In addition, she stressed the need for the development of community trusts to run campsites to enable them to cater for tourists’needs.

The minister also visited the Khuis Nature Reserve, which was being developed to boost tourism.

On her part, Claudia Zuze, tourism development manager, BotswanaTourism Organisation, who is based in Tsabong, said a trail linking Khawa, KD15 and dune trail, the KTPsand dunes and the ones in Bokspits, Rappelspan, Vaalhoek and Struizendam have been created to attract tourists.

The tourists would also experience farm life along the dunes, she said. Zuze said that the Khawa tourism project value chain presented opportunities to strengthen linkages between local small, medium and micro enterprises

and the tourism sector to capture more tourism revenue locally hence the development of a tourism development plan.

It encompasses different aspects of tourism including nature, cultural, sports, events as well as rural agro.

Samuel Brooks, MPfor Kgalagadi South, said the development was critical for fast tracking the development of a campsite for Khawa.

He called for the creation of another route inside the park that would link Khawa to Mabuasehube.

Brooks noted that the new developments would also link the BORAVASTand Khawa trusts, both of which have been allocated campsites inside the park. He encouraged the trusts to collaborate and share clients as well as to engage professional tour guides.https://businessday.ng/

How A Humble Piece Of Rock Solved A

Two QUTresearchers used a standard laptop and a piece of rock from a diamond mine waste pile to solve a longstanding geological mystery about diamond formation on Earth's ancient continents.

Two Queensland University of Technology researchers have used a simple laptop computer and a piece of rock from a diamond mine's "waste pile" to unravel a long-standing geological mystery surrounding the formation of diamonds in the earth's ancient continents.

Carl Walsh, a QUTPh.D. student in Ireland, and QUT Professor Balz Kamber and EmmaTomlinson fromTrinity College, Dublin, published their findings in the prestigious journal Nature.

For his MSc thesis, Mr. Walsh said the research involved computer modeling of a rock from theAfrican continent recovered from the bottom of the lithosphere, the outer part of the Earth between 30km and

From

250km below the surface.

“If you think of an iceberg - the visible part - if you had just an iceberg floating on the ocean surface it would tip over like a boat. This is like the keel of an iceberg," Mr. Walsh said.

Carl Walsh, a QUTPh.D. researcher and the lead author of a paper published in Nature with QUTProfessor Balz Kamber, is looking at a cube of garnet peridotite. This garnet's color indicates that diamond is present.

"We took that starting composition and modeled what would happen to it if it was gradually melted, and what would be left over," said Mr Walsh. "That material is what drives ancient continents that are still alive today."

Professor Kamber from QUT's Faculty of Science and School of Earth andAtmospheric Sciences said the purpose of this research was to investigate how these deep roots might have arisen.

Pile To Diamond Discovery

“The model basically predicts which minerals and melts will be present when you change the temperature of the mantle,” Prof Kamber said.

The rock used for advanced computer modeling was mined sometime between 1871 and 1914 and ended up in the "waste pile" of the famous Kimberley diamond mine, better known as "The Big Hole" in Kimberley, Northern Cape in SouthAfrica.

Carl Walsh, a QUTPh.D. student, and Professor Balz Kamber

Professor Kamber, a professor of petrology, retrieved the rock they have modeled, garnet harzburgite, and it was brought to the surface through a kimberlite pipe.

He carefully hammered the rock to a point where he could send it home.

Professor Kamber said the rock sample contains a slew of minerals that were entrapped on their way up when they ripped through the whole continent in a supersonic volcanic eruption. They are so badly damaged, they are screaming still today, they were completely shattered.

"It's so exciting to see this preserved, as it's already 3.3 billion years old. It's probably the oldest rock most people will ever hold in their hands," Professor Kamber said.

Given that a diamond will turn into graphite when heated too much, Mr. Walsh believes the study resolved the diamond problem as well as the temperatures at which they

formed.

“But yet, when we look at the rocks that contain diamonds, they must have been heated to incredible temperatures," Mr Walsh said. "So why is it that precisely those rocks that experienced the greatest temperatures ended up having diamonds?"

Their research challenges the conventional two-step "melting and stacking" explanation.

"Previously, it was assumed that diamonds would have been found at most of the continent's ancient deep roots, and that these diamonds would have been destroyed over time, because the continent's core is continually invaded and eroded by volatile-rich melts and fluids," Mr. Walsh said. "Our study demonstrates that diamonds are uncommon today — and were in fact always rare."

Professor Kamber explained that on the present-day Earth, the heat and temperature distribution in the mantle is different.

Professor Kamber said: “We're studying the effect of old plumes when much hotter plumes than we have today have reached the base of a growing continent."

Mr. Walsh has traveled to Canberra to recreate similar rocks in the laboratory at the Australian National University since doing the research.

Gayton

ORANIA- PatrioticAlliance leader Gayton McKenzie has been making waves with his overnight fact-finding mission to theAfricaner-only town of Orania. Gayton McKenzie has praised whites-only town Orania after an over night visit Like several political leaders before him, McKenzie headed to the Northern Cape town to meet its leader and learn from their way of doing things. From Orania's plan to end loashedding by purchasing a R25 million battery and becoming totally gridindependent to the cleanliness of the town, there were some standout features that amazed McKenzie.

While the PAleader was thoroughly impressed with his visit to Orania, he still

criticised the town for its exclusionary practices, TimesLIVE reported.

McKenzie said: “Only white people are allowed to live in Orania. The rulers of this town are not forthright about the fact that blacks cannot buy property or stay here. They hide behind vetting, culture, tradition and rules, but Orania is for whites only.” The PAleader's mostly glowing review of Orania has sparked a debate in Mzansi. While some criticised McKenzie for glamorising the whitesonly town, others praised him for his willingness to learn from an apparently thriving society -briefly.co.za

Kuruman Man gets 20 yrs, raping partner who took too long with his food

A46-year-old Kuruman man raped his partner after she took too long to prepare food for him. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison.

The magistrate took into account the amount of time the man had spent in custody and the fact that he did not have previous convictions.

The incident occurred near Bankhara Bodulong in Kuruman in the Northern Cape in 2021.

Giving details about what led up to the rape, Northern Cape National ProsecutingAuthority spokesperson Mojalefa

Senokoatsane said the 46-yearold man arrived at home and demanded that the 44-year-old woman should cook food for

him. He went out to visit friends and drink alcohol, and when he returned home, he started eating the food she had made. But he later attacked her and told her she had taken too long to make the food.

"While assaulting the victim, the accused instructed her to collect some scissors and used the scissors to cut the victim's private parts. The complainant alleges that the wound bled profusely, and the accused proceeded to rape the complainant," said Senokoatsane.

The matter was reported to the police and the man was arrested.

After he was convicted,

prosecutor Bernice Bronkhorst argued that the court should impose a life sentence.

Senokoatsane said:

The reason was that the crime was heinous, as the accused did not only rape his victim, but he also violated her by inflicting grievous bodily harm upon the complainant.

In aggravation of the sentence, Bronkhorst asked the court not to deviate from the prescribed minimum sentence of life imprisonment. She emphasised the seriousness of the offence as well as the fact that the offences committed were not only prevalent but also on the increase.

However, Magistrate Lulamile Mdoda said a life sentence should be reserved for offenders who would have been sentenced to the death penalty if such a sentence existed.

The magistrate also took into account the amount of time the accused had spent in custody and the fact that he did not have previous convictions as substantial and compelling circumstances that justified a deviation from the prescribed minimum sentence.

"However, the heinousness of the crime was highlighted, and the magistrate sentenced the accused to 20 years' direct imprisonment," Senokoatsane said.-news24

First Cold Front Hits Landfall this Weekend

The advisory is valid from midnight on Friday until midnight on Saturday, 13 May

The cold conditions are expected to set in after a welldefined cold front makes landfall onThursday

According to the weather service, the cold front will have “potent” upper air support. After it makes landfall onThursday, daytime temperatures are expected to drop significantly from Friday into Saturday

“Maximum temperatures may be below 10C in places over the southern high-lying areas of the Namkwa region (Northern Cape) and over the interior of the Western Cape,” said the weather service.

The cold front’s wet and cold conditions will be accompanied by generally windy weather

There is even the possibility of a light dusting of snow over the southwestern mountains of the Western Cape and the southern high ground of the Northern Cape from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning.

The potential impacts of the cold front include:

Vulnerable livestock and crops could be lost due to the combination of very cold, wet and windy conditions. The weather service also lists Load shedding as power cuts may make more people vulnerable, especially the weak and frail, as their bodies might not be able to retain heat.Fire hazards and thick smog are possible due to the additional fires built for warmth amid the strong winds.

Green Lobby Vows To Fight 'vultures' Attacking Oceans For Oil And Gas

sperm and beaked whales, which are found in the waters. Migratory fish and sharks, as well as leatherback turtles, may also have high sensitivities to 3D seismic surveys.

EIMS also acknowledged that 3D seismic surveys could mask or interfere with environmental sounds and communication between animals and affect spawning or reproductive success.

social impacts of the survey –for example, the public participation process revealed that fishing communities are concerned the survey will negatively impact their livelihoods. However, EIMS highlighted that the proposed survey would not impact the commercial and small-scale fishing sectors and recreational industries.

Environmental justice group, The Green Connection plans to oppose the environmental authorisation granted for oil and gas exploration off the West Coast - in an area between Hondeklip Bay in the Northern Cape and St Helena Bay in the Western Cape.

"[The] industry, like vultures, are attacking our oceans for oil and gas," said Neville van Rooy, community outreach coordinator forThe Green Connection.

"We will oppose this. We will do our best to resist this in all forms and possible ways we can to protect our ocean and protect the livelihoods of smallscale fishers and our healthy ocean," said Van Rooy

He raised concerns that clean and healthy oceans are not promoted enough, nor is the reality of climate change respected enough. Climate change and global warming are caused by emissions from burning fossil fuels like oil and gas.

The Department of Mineral Resources and Energy (DMRE) inApril had granted approval to UK-based data companyTGS to conduct a 3D seismic survey

Seismic surveys involve emitting sound in water As the sound waves bounce back, information is collected by a receiver to map out the ocean floor and possibly detect oil and gas resources.

The area in question spans 57 400 km2. It is 120km offshore from St Helena Bay in the Western Cape and 230km

offshore from Hondeklip Bay in the Northern Cape. It lies within the Orange Basin, where there were two major oil finds off Namibia's coast.

The exploration area covers several petroleum lice

The area covers several petroleum licence blocks, to which PetroleumAgency South Africa holds rights, as does energy companies TotalEnergies,Africa Oil SA, OK Energy, Shell andTosaco Energy

The application for the survey was submitted byTGS late last year TGS will sell the data it collects to exploration and production companies. As per the law, the data will be given for free to PetroleumAgency SA, as the custodian of national petroleum data, explained chief executive Dr Phindile Masangane.

PetroleumAgency SAcan also share this data with academics for research and teaching purposes. The data is also useful for the agency to set up auctions for new licencing rounds.

According to documents by TGS's environmental practitioner that put together the application, Environmental Impact Management Services (EIMS), the survey is expected to last 70 days, which is inclusive of "down time".

In its documents, EIMS notes that the area overlaps with critical biodiversity areas and that the "highest sensitivities" to the proposed 3D seismic survey would be from whale species, including the humpback, which migrates through the area, and the

However, it relies on mitigation measures to limit these impacts – such as avoiding sensitive areas and periods such as migration for whales from June to November The seismic vessel will also be fitted with a device to detect animals and also to have qualified marine mammal observers on board.

"The findings of the specialist studies conclude that there are no environmental fatal flaws that should prevent the proposed project from proceeding, provided that the recommended mitigation and management measures are implemented," it said in a summary of its assessments.

Based on the information submitted, the DMRE in its notice granting the approval said it is "satisfied" that the seismic survey would not conflict with the objectives of the National Environmental ManagementAct. Nor does it believe the exploration will result in "detrimental risks to the environment and public".

"The proposed 3D seismic survey is a widely used oil and gas exploration technology worldwide. The said technology is currently used in South Africa and is generally regarded as non-intrusive in nature," the department said. It noted that the technology poses "potential impacts" on fisheries and marine fauna. But the majority of the impacts have been assessed to range from "low to very low significance' when mitigation measures are in place.

The department expects that mitigation measures will help ensure the seismic survey does not have "any detrimental impacts" on the environment.

EIMS also noted the potential

For one, the survey won’t take place during June and July, which is a peak fishing period. EIMS also proposes a grievance mechanism for the fishing industry to use in case their activities are disrupted by the seismic survey. EIMS also recommended thatTGS consult with communities to find ways to make a positive contribution to their lives.

The DMRE in its notice indicated that it is satisfied with the public participation process and that concerns raised by interested and affected parties had been "adequately"' addressed in the Environmental Basic Assessment Report.

There is a 20-day period from when public notice is given of the environmental authorisation for appeals to be submitted to the Department of Forestry, Fisheries and Environment to consider

Failing an appeal being granted, a legal challenge could be considered.

Coastal communities have successfully challenged and blocked two proposed seismic surveys off the West and Wild coasts through the courts.A high court in December ruled that a decision to block a seismic survey survey proposed by oil and gas company Shell, could be heard by the Supreme Court of Appeal. It would be a precedent-setting matter
