Ryan Phillippe (Shooter), Emile Hirsch (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), and Mena Suvari (American Horror Story) are set to star in an upcoming action survival thriller titled Kalahari. The film comes from Vertical, and it has already wrapped production.

The film tells the story of a young couple (Phillippe, Suvari), who are “forced to flee their Christian missionary post in the Kalahari Desert aboard a rickety plane after an extremist militant group threatens their lives. Piloted by a corrupt smuggler (Hirsch), the plane loses power and crash-lands in the middle of an animal preserve populated by lions, leopards and hyenas. Injured, frightened, and being tracked by the extremists, this ragtag group must fight for their survival from both man and beast where only the strong will survive.”

The movie was written and directed by Mukunda Michael Dewil (Collide) and it also stars Dylan Flashner (The Card Counter),Tristan Thompson (TheTutor), JeremyTardy (Dear White People) and Michaela Sasner (Aftermath).

Producer Robert Ogden Barnum said in a statement: “Kalahari has been a great experience. Mukunda created a visual, and visceral, experience for moviegoers. And with our many collaborations, I know the project is in great hands with Vertical and Voltage taking it on.”

Vertical Partner Peter Jarowey added: “With the launch of Vertical’s production division last year, we are thrilled to have Kalahari be one of our first fully financed films from that initiative. The cast really delivered terrific performances, and at times,

under some grueling conditions. We have worked with Rob Barnum on numerous, successful, projects in the past and glad that we are partnered on this one as well. We are excited that Voltage, another long-time partner, has taken on International sales this early and will be able to present in Cannes this year. We envisioned this film for the big screen and that’s exactly

where we will play it later this year.”

Added Voltage’s President & COO Jonathan Deckter: “We love working with Vertical, Rob Barnum, and Lucas Jarach. Between the Leopards, the Lions, the Hyeneas and the terrorists, Kalahari‘s going to be wild edge of your seat thrill ride sure to appeal to the global marketplace.”

Last Known Speaker Fights To Preserve South African Indigenous Language

UPINGTON, - When she was a girl in SouthAfrica's Northern Cape, Katrina Esau stopped speaking her mother tongue, N|uu, after being mocked by other people and told it was an "ugly language".

Now at age 90, she is the last known speaker of N|uu, one of a group of indigenous languages in SouthAfrica that have been all but stamped out by the impacts of colonialism and apartheid.

"We became ashamed when we were young girls, and we stopped speaking the language," Esau told Reuters. Instead she spokeAfrikaans, the language promoted by SouthAfrica's white minority rulers.

Later, as an adult, Esau realized the importance of preserving her mother tongue and founded a school in her home town of Upington to try to pass it on.

N|uu was spoken by one of many hunter-gatherer groups that populated SouthernAfrica before the arrival of European colonizers. These indigenous people spoke dozens of

languages in the San family, many of which have gone extinct.

"During colonialism and apartheid, Ouma Katrina and other (indigenous) groups were not allowed to speak their languages, their languages were frowned upon, and that is how we got to the point where we are with minimal speakers," said Lorato Mokwena, a linguist from SouthAfrica's University of the Western Cape.

Ouma Katrina Esau, last N|uu speaker fights to preserve South African indigenous language, in CapeTown

"It's important that while Ouma Katrina is around, that we do the best that we can to preserve the language and to document it," she said.

Ouma, or "grandmother" Katrina started teaching N|uu to local children around 2005 and later opened a school with her granddaughter and language activist Claudia Snyman. But the school property was vandalised during the COVID-19 lockdown, and now lies

abandoned.

"I am very concerned. The language isn't where it's supposed to be yet. If Ouma dies, then everything dies," said Snyman, whose dream is to one day open her own school and continue her grandmother's legacy. "I'll do anything in my power to help her to prevent this language from dying," Snyman said.

Esau has two living sisters but they do not speak N|uu, and she does not know anyone else who does, save the family members and children to whom she has taught some words and phrases.

"I miss speaking to someone," she said. "It doesn't feel good. You talk, you walk, you know … you miss someone who can just sit with you and speak N|uu with you." - Reuters

Arriveer laat en waai vroeg!

As ek ‘n voorbeeld uit my jeugroman, Sindikaat, kan gebruik.

“Is jy gesuip, Bossie? No flippen way!” Paul draai die CD-speler se volume laer

Moenie die toneel holrug ry nie.

hierdie heel eerste hoofstuk in my jeugroman, Sindikaat?

Arriveer laat, waai vroeg! Lekker skryf!!!

It may be business as usual in the Northern Cape Department of Health for the former acting head of health and the chief financial officer who are back at work after suspension, but concerns remain over the impact of the leadership instability on public healthcare in the province.

In March 2021, the then acting head of health Dr DeonTheys and CFO Dan Gaborone were suspended after they were implicated in fraud and corruption relating to a R43million personal protective equipment (PPE) tender

When Spotlight caught up with Theys this week, he was back at work after a year-long suspension. Theys said it would be business as usual and there were “no hard feelings” from his side. His first day back at work was on Monday, 23 January

“I am excited to be back at work. My name has been cleared by the Special Investigating Unit [SIU] as I indicated to you last year when we spoke. Right now, I am looking forward to going back to serving the people of the Northern Cape.”

Cleared – for now

Kaizer Kganyago, the SIU spokesperson, told Spotlight: “With regard to the criminal matter, the SIU referred it to the National ProsecutingAuthority and it is still ongoing. With regard to the SIU’s disciplinary recommendation, the matter was referred to the Office of the Premier.”

The spokesperson for the National ProsecutingAuthority in the Northern Cape, Mojalefa Senokoatsane, said the PPE case againstTheys and Gaborone was provisionally withdrawn on 8 December 2022. Senokoatsane said it would be premature for the prosecution to fully disclose the reasons.

“What the NPAcan confirm is that the matter is still being investigated as we believe that there is a case that needs to be answered by the accused. To ensure that the investigations are carried out with the sensitivity that they deserve, we will not be able to share any additional information regarding any additional charges or people involved in this matter at this stage.”

Senokoatsane did say, however, that they were trying to get more evidence and should they find more evidence, the case can be reinstated.

Meanwhile, the spokesperson for the Northern Cape Department of Health, Lulu Mxekezo, also confirmed to Spotlight that the two officials had returned to work in January. “The internal human resources procedures have been followed,” she said. She did not respond to requests to clarify what the procedures entailed and what

the outcome was.

30 months and no permanent HOD

According to the Public ServiceAct, a vacant head of department (HoD) post must be filled within six months. However, the Northern Cape health department has now been without a permanent HoD for more than 30 months. The department last had a permanent HoD in July 2020 — Dr Steven Jonkers, who is now working as deputy director-general in the Office of the Premier. Jonkers is also facing corruption charges.

Spotlight previously reported that the Hawks said it is alleged that Jonkers fraudulently awarded a security tender for the department in 2017 to Defensor Electronic Security Systems for an amount exceeding R384-million.

According to the director-general of the Northern Cape government, Justice Bekebeke, Jonkers has not been suspended because they are waiting on the outcome of his court case. Meanwhile,Theys did not return to the acting HOD position but is back in his former position as provincial medical director Gaborone took up his old CFO post. Riaan Strydom has been acting as HOD sinceTheys was suspended in March 2021.

In March last year, Northern Cape Premier Dr Zamani Saul’s spokesperson, BronwynThomasAdams, told Spotlight the recruitment process of a new HoD was in its “final stages”.This week, however, she said: “The recruitment process for an HoD is under way and we expect a permanent head to be appointed in a month or two.The reason why it took so long is because we had to organise the right panels and ensure that everyone is available at the same time.”

Concerns mounting

Like other provinces, the Northern Cape health department is beset with several serious health challenges, including staff shortages, public health infrastructure issues and problems with patient emergency transport services. Not having a permanent HoD in the most important health administration post in the province is not helping, according to organised labour and opposition parties in the province.

“In the end, it will lead to the suffering of healthcare services,” saidAndrew Vassen, the provincial secretary of the union Denosa.

“Riaan Strydom has embarked on various service delivery improvement programmes together with the MEC, but all efforts could be of no relevance should a new HoD be appointed tomorrow,” said Vassen. “The fact that there is no permanent HoD in the Department of Health is putting a strain on healthcare services. The

department is running like a headless chicken where it is uncertain whether a plan — good or bad — will be implemented should a new head be appointed. The inconsistency of not having permanent senior managers has a bad influence on service delivery,” he said.

Vassen said Denosa was working with the department on an organogram. “It is not only the HoD that is acting, there are many chief directors and senior managers that are in acting positions. These are the kind of things that are delaying the process of appointing more staff members and improving the infrastructure of facilities.”

As of September last year, there were 17 vacancies in key senior management positions in the provincial health department, according to a response to a parliamentary question posed by DA MPMichele Clarke.

Among the vacancies at the time were: deputy director-general; chief director in the office of the MEC; chief director of the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital; chief director for priority programmes; chief director for district health services; chief director for corporate services; chief director for provincial hospital services and EMS; chief director for strategic planning and analysis; director in the office of the DDG (DDG position also vacant); director of facility planning and maintenance; director of quality assurance; director of rehabilitation; director of financial accounting; director of communicable diseases; director of human resources; director of legal services; and director of maternal, child, youth and women’s health and nutrition.

By the time of publication, Mxekezo had not responded to Spotlight’s questions on which of these posts had been filled in the meantime.

The Northern Cape leader of the Freedom Front Plus, Wynand Boshoff, said it is the people depending on public health services who suffer because of inadequate top management.

“There was joy when the previous HoD and CFO were arrested for corruption for the acquisition of PPE

equipment during Covid-19.The acting HoD, Riaan Strydom, was generally well accepted and our sources within the department are praising his work ethic. However, acting in a position is always an impediment to doing great work,” said Boshoff.

The DA’s spokesperson for health in the Northern Cape, Dr Isak Fritz, agreed that the department was in critical need of stability that can only come with stable management.

“The fact that government continues to drag its feet in respect of this appointment is very concerning. The quality of health in the Northern Cape continues to decline. Emergency medical services are hampered by a lack of operational ambulances and emergency practitioners.

“The province’s only tertiary facility, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital, has a growing surgery and treatment backlog due to limited operational theatres because of serious nursing shortages, and the districts have severe staff shortages and shortages of life-saving equipment,” he said.

No consequences?

The opposition parties were also concerned about the return ofTheys and Gaborone. “The charges that these officials were facing relate to irregularities in PPE and are serious. What is disturbing is that the department does not seem to have instituted any further internal disciplinary procedures against them, other than their suspension with full pay,” said Fritz.

“Now they welcome them without any mention of internal investigations. Given the deepseated rot within this department, it is worrying that both DrTheys and Gaborone get to return to influential senior management positions as if nothing has happened.”

Although the department claims that HR processes were followed for the return ofTheys and Gaborone, Theys told Spotlight there were no internal processes against him. Mxekezo did not respond to followup questions to clarify this. DM/MC This article was published by Spotlight – health journalism

“We pass through this world but once. Few tragedies can be more extensive than the stunting of life, few injustices deeper than the denial of an opportunity to strive or even to hope, by a limit imposed from without, but falsely identified as lying within.”

SouthAfrica has a population of over 60.14 million and an internet adoption rate of 70.6%, yet there are 112.7 million active cellular mobile connections, which equates to 187.4% of the population. This implies that one user has multiple SIM cards and could be accessing the internet from either dual SIM phones, tablets, wearables, or laptops that support mobile connectivity.

These stats were shared in the Digital 2023 SouthAfrica report jointly by WeAre Social and Meltwater.

According to the report, when it came to device ownership among internet users between the 16-64 age group, 99.4% use smartphones vs 11.1% who use feature phones.Tablet access for the same bracket accounted for 34.1% and

smartwatches totalled 24.7%. How will 6G change the world? This is what experts at Mobile World Congress think These figures indicate that SouthAfricans rely heavily on mobile data connections and spend an average of 9 hours and 38 minutes daily accessing the internet across all their devices, according to the report.

Two new players enter the mobile arena

And now the mobile network space has become more competitive with two new operators entering the market in the last month alone: Melon Mobile and Rain, who expanded beyond a data-only offering.

Melon Mobile launched in April as a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that piggybacks on the MTN network, but has an independent support team

and call centre. Other MVNOs that run on MTN are PnPMobile andAfrihostAir Mobile.

Melon calls itself a "fully digital" MVNO because you can order a SIM card via its website or app and set it up directly on your device –there are no physical stores. It is targeting the 18–45-yearold market.

It currently supportsAndroid and iOS devices with selfRICAbuilt into the app. It offers the flexibility of a DIY price plan that can be changed monthly, and data does not expire if you have an active paid plan.

Rain, on the other hand, is no longer a data-only network. You can now get a mobile number for your smartphone. It is a fully-fledged 4G mobile operator that offers voice calls, data and SMSes. It has only one offering under "rainOne" that includes unlimited 5G home wifi and two SIM cards for calls, data and SMSes.

Data price comparison

Melon Mobile’s data bundles start at R45 for 500MB and is the cheapest "plan" you can be on, but you can add 50 minutes of voice for R35, and 50 SMSes for R15.

But when it comes to data bundles, it is priced at R60 for 1GB; R115 for 2GB; R160 for 3GB and R340 for 10GB.

rainOne’s main package is bundled with unlimited home 5G with speeds up to 30Mbps and a free router, along with two SIM cards that each offer 2GB of data, 60 minutes of voice, and 100 SMSes that costs R559.

It offers a "level up" option for R75 more per tier that gradually increases data and voice options from 3GB and 90 minutes all the way up to 7GB and 210 minutes. Access to its 4G network with a standalone number is not available as an individual product.

Cell C, MTN, and Vodacom all have the same pricing on 30-day bundles - it costs R85 for 1GB; R149 for 2GB; and R469 for 10GB.

Telkom Mobile offers twomonth bundles: R79 for 1GB, R89 for 1.5GB, and R146 for 2GB, 209 for 3GB; and R493 for 10GB.

Stygings in rentekoerse, brandstofpryse, lewenskoste,

Crown Energy saidThursday it would withdraw from the joint venture operating the Block 2B offshore SouthAfrica after disappointing results of the Gazania-1 exploration well drilled in 2022.

The Gazania-1 well was spudded in October 2022, using the Island Innovator semi-

submersible drilling.

The Gazania-1 well was drilled in about 150 meters of water, 25 kilometers offshore the Northern Cape in the Orange Basin, and targeted a gross prospective resource of over 300 million barrels of light oil across multiple zones.

EcoAtlantic, the operator of the

offshore block, said in November the well had reached a target depth of 2,360 meters but did not show evidence of commercial hydrocarbons.

The JV partnership in respect of Block 2B comprises EcoAtlantic (50% WI and Operator),Africa Energy Corp (27.5% WI), Panoro 2B Limited, a subsidiary

of Panoro EnergyASA(12.5% WI), and Crown EnergyAB (10% WI).

Crown Energy saidThursday it had sent a withdrawal letter to the joint venture, meaning that the other owners will take over Crown’s 10% in the project.

"This will not have any economic consequences for Crown Energy as Crown has already impaired the value of this asset," Crown said.

Yoav Ben-Eli, CEO of Crown Energy: "We have decided to change Crown's strategy from oil and gas into sustainable businesses such as MedTech. To divest the SouthAfrican holding is logical from both economic and strategic purposes.”

Eastern Cape Premier andANC national executive committee member Oscar Mabuyane tried to fake his way into a PhD in public administration with the help of a tainted University of Fort Hare professor and his secret team of ghostwriters.

This according to a forensic report commissioned by the institution, obtained by News24, which revealed how former UFH Professor Edwin Ijeoma used his secretary and a squad of "research assistants" to compile and submit Mabuyane's research proposal – and other key documents.

"All indications are that Mabuyane’s master's proposal was a sham. It was conceived of and authored and constantly refined by Ijeoma and his researchers. At most, Mabuyane titivated and paraphrased here and there," investigators found –after an analysis of emails and the metadata of documents turned in under Mabuyane's hand.

Mabuyane holds a BCom degree, and without an honours qualification, could not have enrolled at the university for his masters degree.

"It is not possible for Mabuyane to claim innocence and to argue that he did not know what was being done for him.The evidence against him is too compelling," they added.

It was not only the research proposal that was secretly outsourced. Investigators found:

Mabuyane's research topic was pitched and refined by Ijeoma and his cohorts;

Ijeoma played puppet master, coaching Mabuyane on how to present his proposal to a university panel; Ijeoma took notes and oversaw a ghost-writing team that made corrections and; Used his sway within the university to irregularly register Mabuyane for a master's degree he did not qualify for, before notching it up to a PhD. Documents obtained in the forensic audit raise allegations of fraud, in that Mabuyane put his signature to a letter which, at first blush, gives the impression that he already held a master's degree. The report forms part of a sweeping probe by the Special Investigating Unit that casts a shadow over Mabuyane's probity The investigation has also drawn in Public Service and Administration Minister Noxolo Kiviet, who stands accused of fraudulently obtaining two degrees from the university

In response to questions from News24, Mabuyane said he was being set up, and that the investigation's findings were concocted as part of a political scheme to smear his good name.

The iconic institution has been ground zero in a string of assassinations linked to entrenched networks of corruption. Ijeoma's degree factory and other extraction schemes have been exposed in a clean-up advanced by Vice Chancellor Sakhela Buhlungu.

Ijeoma: genesis of graft

UFH placed Ijeoma on precautionary suspension in October 2020 over allegations that he irregularly registered

axed Eastern Cape MEC Sindiswa Gomba for an Honours in PublicAdministration.

He resigned in February 2021 while still on suspension. His secretary, Candyce Dawes –who played a central role in the scheme – was dismissed.A month later, UFH deregistered Mabuyane from a master's class based on allegations akin to Gomba's.

Forensic investigators were called in and sifted through emails and expansive data dumps from the computers and servers used by Ijeoma and Dawes.

The result is a two-year timeline – using a trail of electronic breadcrumbs – which reveals that even with the barest of inputs, Mabuyane came close to the highest echelons of academia.

In a statement in response to questions, the university said: "UFH confirms that all internal and external investigation reports as well as physical, forensic and digital evidence was handed over to the SIU several weeks ago in relation to the serious academic fraud that occurred in Department of PublicAdministration at the Bisho campus involving public servants."

'Hello my chief’

On 19 March 2018, Ijeoma received an email from a university administrator confirming that one "Mr O Mabuyane is now registered for MAdmin [Master of Administration]".

Amonth later, Ijeoma emailed Phumza Mbula, anANC administrator, and copied in one of his research assistants. The message reads:

"Dear Phumza. Pls ask Hon Mabuyana to consider one out of those hereunder and copy his email in your response as I don’t have his email on my list. I have also copied my research Assistance. 1.AConceptual Exploratory Study of the IGR Policy on the three spheres of SouthAfrica’s government. 2.An in-depth analysis of the application of the IGR Policy: The case of the Eastern Cape Government (2010-2015). and 3.Any other topic of your Choice" (sic)

In July, Ijeoma's researcher

mailed Mabuyane directly

University of Fort Hare

Amessage from one of Edwin Ijeoma's "research assistants" to Eastern Cape Oscar Mabuyane. The title of the proposal sent to Mabuyane by the researcher is nearly verbatim what Ijeoma had pitched him when the first iterations of his research topic were contrived.

When Mabuyane submitted "his" proposal, it turned out to be a close copy of what he had been fed by Ijeoma and his team.

"We conducted a physical and computer-generated comparison of the two documents and discovered that the documents were largely the same save for minor tweaks to the title, paraphrasing of the content and some additional information," investigators wrote.

Missed deadline

Despite consistent back and forth between Ijeoma, his writers and Mabuyane, the premier had not managed to register for the new academic year in 2019.

Registration closed in March and an extension was granted, with the caveat that students would need to submit a motivation letter.

Investigators found that, six days before the deadline, Ijeoma's secretary penned Mabuyane's letter of motivation, part of which explained his troubles in meeting the registration deadline, and sent it to his personal secretary

"As a political leader and MEC in the province of the Eastern Cape, with a huge political and administrative responsibilities, it has always been difficult to make time to visit the university for physical registration as I have always been unlucky with the UFH online registration process," it reads, and was signed, "L.O. Mabuyane –Student".

Three days later, Dawes submitted Mabuyane's motivation letter and a "course addition form" to the university

This form indicated that Mabuyane was now applying for a PhD.

"The signed letter of motivation that was returned to the university changed in one continues on pg 22

significant respect which also tied in with the request for his PhD registration namely the heading 'DEGREE: MAdmin' was removed from the top of the letter and was relocated under Mabuyane’s signature as if to appear that he had already obtained this degree and it was part of his title," investigators found.

University of Fort Hare

Aletter of motivation supposedly penned by Eastern Cape Premier Oscar Mabuyane. Analysis of the document revealed it was authored by Ijeoma's secretary

‘I'm in trouble'

When it came time for Mabuyane to present "his" proposal to a panel of academics, he appeared to quiver

Aday before the presentation, investigators found, Mabuyane emailed a PowerPoint

presentation to Ijeoma, who responded with a detailed breakdown of what was required of him when he took the podium.

At 19:30 that evening, Mabuyane emailed Ijeoma, saying: "That’s ohk struggling for 10 minutes, I am in trouble. Which areas I must on if I may ask". (sic). At 19:58, Ijeoma provided a detailed reply with "pointers for the committee" and what to concentrate on.

The following day, Ijeoma emailed Mabuyane and congratulated him for doing well in his presentation. The committee accepted his research proposal, on the condition that several corrections were made.

Bungles

As auditors found, Ijeoma's ghostwriters were tasked with making corrections to Mabuyane's research document, but fumbled to the point that a deadline came and went. The net result was that Mabuyane

would have to present again, this time inAugust.

Another missed deadline meant that Ijeoma would have to use his access to ensure that Mabuyane could present to the committee. But in his effort, attention was drawn to the politician's bid for a PhD.

Metadata and physical comparisons of various iterations of documents and proposals, meant to have been compiled by Mabuyane, trace back to a league of researchers tied to Ijeoma, according to investigators.

When other professors called on Ijeoma to answer questions as to how Mabuyane was admitted for a master's degree without holding an honours degree. Within days, he was placed on suspension.

No comment for you

Mabuyane, speaking to News24 on the eve of publishing, was strident in his denials.

“It is pathetic to think Ijeoma did the proposal for me. Whoever is saying this is lying. I developed my proposal and I developed all the work on my own," he said.

Mabuyane added that he would challenge the forensic report if need be, and would also take on the university to defend his reputation.

“I was never given the opportunity to defend myself... but I will say that all the work was my own and I am ready. I have a file, and I am ready to go to court to challenge this and put it before a judge," he added.

Attempts to contact Ijeoma were unsuccessful. He read WhatsApp messages sent to him by News24 and did not respond.

ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula, when asked if claims against Mabuyane were a blight on the party's corruption cleanup drive, did not respond.News24

Postmasburg Budding Artist Hergill Coghlan uses his Acrylic art

as

a means

of

being still and a process of healing

My name is Hergill Coghlan, I was born in Postmasburg on the 22nd ofAugust 1992. I have loved art for as long as I can remember and have been drawing since primary school. I stayed in Postmasburg till I was 13 with my mother and my stepfather, until we moved to upington due to my step father getting a transfer in the army. I started my high school year at Duineveld then went to Upingtin High at the start of my grade 9 year. I was in the middle of grade 11 when we came back to Postmasburg after things didnt work out between my mom and step dad. I completed my matric year in 2011 at Postmasburg High and went to kimberley to study fitting and turning where I stayed with my biological dad for 4 years. I completed my level 4 fitting and N2 but I especially excelled in engineering drawings due to having a passion for drawing. I used to be focussed on drawing portraits of celebrities but later lost interest in art due to many people breaking me down. In 2016 my mother passed away and after months of grieving I needed an escape so I started drawing again but not seriously. In 2017 I had a cabinet making job where we never had material to do work so to pass time i bought myself an acrylic paint set with a book and started painting. Not long after that I bought myself canvasses and started painting beautiful views of nature. My journey as an acrylic painter began but I have tried other mediums but for some

reason I always preferred using acrylics. I later became a teachers assistant at a Primary school in Postmasburg and was able to give art lessons during breaks and when I had free time with the children. I worked at 3 different schools within 2years and started painting for commision while studying personal training as its also been one of my passions. I started looking for another job due to unfortunate reasons and was blessed with one atTalisman hire. I am currently employed atTalisman hire under Kolomla mine as the technical admin but Im still painting and hoping te become a successfull artist.
