Botswana Banned Sa Fruit And Veg. Now Traders There Are Demanding A U-turn

Ashort supply of fresh produce in Botswana has left traders pleading with their government to allow them to get produce from SouthAfrica and others again, following theTswana nation's decision to instate an import ban on certain commodities, the Sunday Standard reported.

Instead of closing off the borders completely, Batswana traders and representatives of smallscale traders are requesting that the government reconsiders its importation ban policy to allow them to import at least 30% of vegetable and fruit commodities, it reported.

Bostwana earlier this year halted imports of certain produce from SouthAfrica, including tomatoes, carrots, beetroot, potatoes, cabbage, lettuce, garlic, onions, ginger, turmeric, chilli peppers, butternut, watermelons, sweet peppers, green mealies, and fresh herbs. Its rationale was to protect its local agricultural

sectors, decrease its P9.2 billion (R12 billion) yearly import bill and boost horticultural competitiveness; but the little supply of produce it is now left with is being absorbed by big chains, with most farmers reserving contracts to supply them, per the Sunday Standard.

This has left out small greengrocers and traders, who have now written to the president of Botswana, Mokgweetsi Masisi, in a petition against the policy, lamenting that local producers have not been able to meet the demand for most of the barred commodities.

SouthAfrica exports large volumes of fruit and vegetables to countries in the Southern African Customs Union (SACU) region, with Bostwana making up a considerable share.

Between 2017 and 2021, South Africa’s annual potato exports to the global market averaged

A man sorts cabbage, filling large container with fresh cabbage in vegetable factory. Photo: Getty Images

R705 million, and R108 million was for Botswana, according to a report by the National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC).

Onions, the second largest vegetable commodity South Africa exports to the other countries on the continent, averaged R447 million per year, and R43 million for Botswana. Onion exports to Botswana and

Namibia, another country that has banned some imports, have grown 22% between the two nations in four years.

“Botswana and Namibia accounted for 32% of cabbage exports, 27% of potatoes, 25% of tomatoes, 11% of carrots, and 9% of onions,” writesThabile Nkunjana and Sifiso Ntombela at NAMC.

Emergency Services Workers Down Tools

EMERGENCYmedical services (EMS) personnel in the John Taolo Gaetsewe (JTG) District downed tools on Sunday after the Northern Cape Department of Health apparently failed to address concerns about working conditions and the “shocking state” of ambulances.

Calls to the control centre have gone unanswered and there has been no transport for outpatients.

JTG EMS members who belong to the Health and Other Service PersonnelTrade Union of SA (Hospersa) are in the process of arranging a march and a picket at the office of the MEC for Health, Maruping Lekwene, on October 28.

The poor state of the EMS service in the JTG District came under the spotlight recently after ambulances were seen parked in the yards of paramedics as there was no operational base.

It was revealed that the ambulances are non-compliant and/or non-operational, paramedics had to work from home or under a tree, the service is understaffed and workers are owed access hours for a number of years.

Community members have said that the ambulances are no different to taxis as they lack the necessary medical equipment.

The EMS staff pointed out that the utilisation of non-compliant vehicles placed the lives of patients at risk.

The paramedics also reportedly don’t have tools of the trade and had to use money from their own pockets to purchase vital equipment in an effort to provide services to their communities.

The strike follows a decision by

the paramedics to withdraw the equipment that they bought.

The EMS personnel are concerned that they are at risk of being scrapped off the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) roll due to noncompliance by the Northern Cape Department of Health and not having the right equipment.

The EMS workers have also been angered by the department’s response to media enquiries that it has procured the necessary equipment.

Department spokesperson Lulu Mxekezo said last week that a team had been sent to JTG to investigate the claims and has finalised the task.

Mxekezo said that appropriate action would be implemented to remedy the situation.

“The system shortfalls that have been identified in the report are being addressed, including that of an EMS base,” said Mxekezo.

In response, the EMS workers said that they have been receiving “empty promises” from the department for years and that none of the top management had made any effort to engage with them.

They accused the department of covering up the dire state of the service.

Apparently, EMS personnel have been working from their homes after they were removed from the old De Villiers building, which was reportedly earmarked for renovations.

One of the paramedics pointed out that working from home meant that they had to use their private resources. Some paramedics have reportedly

been working from the Kuruman Hospital parking lot.

Meanwhile, the De Villiers building has not been renovated and it has been taken over by homeless people and criminals who have turned it into a drug den.

Aconcerned community member recently described his experience en route to hospital in one of the ambulances as a “taxi ride”.

He said that no blood pressure, temperature or other vital signs readings were taken as the paramedic told him that the machines were not serviced and were giving incorrect readings.

“It was disappointing to realise that our health system is not only inconsiderate of us but also of its workers,” said the patient. “We have forever been blaming the paramedics, unaware of what they are going through.”

The provincial chairperson of Hospersa, Paul Graas, expressed disappointment and frustration with the Health Department for “ignoring its employees for years”.

Graas said that several attempts to get the department to intervene had failed and the union members were sick and tired of using their own resources, including their personal cellphones.

He added that the members were losing faith in the union too, as they felt it was failing them.

Graas said that from the list of concerns they raised with the department, the only intervention thus far is the roll-out of the new call centre system, which, he added, is “useless” because most of the ambulances are nonoperational.

“Only a few ambulances have the system installed due to most of the ambulances being faulty We have no knowledge of how far the roll-out is. We only see it as an unnecessary cost because the installation of that system won’t save anyone’s life,” said Graas.

He said that the union had to intervene and find a temporary place for its members to work after they found them working from under a tree.

“It was a health hazard for the members to work from the hospital parking lot or from under a tree. It was also evident that the workers were not getting enough rest to prepare for work because they were working from a bench or from under a tree.

“All we could organise as a temporary measure was to get them the smallest room inside the hospital to work from.” - DFA

Karakterisering in jou storie.

Plascon gesig (baie grimering).

Boeke vir tieners

Karakterisering

Sterk eienskappe:

Goeie interpersoonlike vaardighede.

Goeie

danser/skut/swaardvegter/sportm an of -vrou, ens. Fisiek sterk (Marvel films).

Vinnige reflekse.

Hoe werk karakterisering in jou storie?

en persoonlikhede verskil ook (Iron Man vs.Thanos vs.The Hulk).

Wees oorspronklik.

‘nTweegesig. ‘n Jakkals. Eienaardige brilvorm.

Uitstekende kok of bobaas bakker

Uitstekende bestuurder –gevorderde bestuursvaardighede (Fast & Furious films).

Spesiale konneksie met diere, byvoorbeeld Bossie in Sindikaat (jeugfiksie).

Boeke vir tieners

Karakterisering

Vreeslose persoon.

Gladde mond: laat onwettighede goed lyk (Neil Caffrey in die White CollarTV-reeks).

Swak eienskappe:

Onleesbare handskrif.

Slegte bestuurder Altyd laat.

Swak organisatoriese vaardighede.

Games/Divergent/I am Number Four/The Fault in our Stars) of sy/haar einddoel bereik (Marvel/Looking forAlaska/City of Bones).

Painful Retrenchment Sees Olyn Create Vibration Analysis Firm

“Unsafe or unproductive conditions at work can often be avoided by taking into account the capabilities of condition monitoring.”

He says many factors play a role in condition monitoring. These include contamination, wear debris, imbalance, including a combination of parallel and angular misalignments, among others.

“These factors largely determine the equipment’s performance in the workplace. We provide advance condition monitoring technology to machines and diagnose the effect of the rotation of the equipment,” he says.

“In any business, you need to understand the direction you are taking, get the right personnel to help you to realise your dream and take your establishment to greater heights.

“I’m blessed to be working with the team I have, and our vision is clear: to grow the business by leaps and bounds.”

It took a bruising retrenchment episode forThabisho Olyn to realise he needed to start his own business, and over the next few months after losing his job, his vision has paid off.

Olyn, 38, foundedTshiamiso Design & Hydraulic, a company specialising in heavy and light metal mechanical equipment and machines, in 2017.

The entrepreneur did not have financial support to realise his dream business taking off. However, he used his severance package after being retrenched in 2015.

The company specialises in vibration analysis on rotating machines, including fans, pumps, compressors, PDTgearboxes, electrical motor, gearboxes and

blowers.

Born inTsineng village in Kuruman, Olyn says he was inspired to get i to business after he realising there were not many black-owned businesses specialising in condition monitoring. “The core duty is to ensure the sustainability of the business by sourcing clients and keep them satisfied so that they are in the system of the business for longer as permanent clients,” says Olyn.

“We provide a condition monitoring service, where we use science and practice of designing systems to suit the equipment so that the tasks required of the equipment operation are not only within limitations but ensure optimum use of the equipment’s functional capabilities.

“In the present context a condition monitoring programme is regarded as a systematic approach to anticipating, identifying, analysing and controlling the functioning and reliability of the equipment.

“The critical equipment identification process provides the data needed to identify, control, and prevent unexpected downtime of the machine,” he says.

Olyn, who holds diploma in mechanical engineering and a fitting trade, says he is grateful his vision to build a sustainable business paid off and this was made possible by teamwork.

“Our company employs 32

He adds that he is embarking on spreading his wings to other parts of the country, outside the Northern Cape, where there are mining towns, and into other African countries.

“I believe as an entity we shouldn’t box ourselves in one industry. We are getting clients in the manufacturing and other industries to service their machines. It is all possible through a good workforce and passionate people who love and enjoy what they do.”

The company provides services to mining companies such as Tshipi E Ntle Manganese Mining, AngloAmerican Kolomela Iron Ore Mine, Sedibeng Iron Ore Mine,AngloAmerican Sishen Iron Ore Mine, Kalagadi Manganese, Kudumane Manganese Resources and Silkstar Engineers. - Sundayworld

What Are The Deductions And Other Acts Concerning An Employee’s Remuneration?

Section 34 of the BCEA, Deductions and other acts concerning remuneration.

In the BCEAthere are a few specified reasons as to why an Employer can deduct from an Employee’s remuneration.

These reasons fall within a few different categories, namely:

1. Reimbursement for loss.

2. Purchase of Goods by the Employee.

3. Deductions according to Law, CollectiveAgreement, Court Order orArbitrationAward.

4. Over payment of Remuneration.

Point one refers to financial losses caused by an Employee whereby the Employer is prejudiced.

This will appear as damages to company property and/or assets.

An example of this is, if an Employee operates a company vehicle but was negligent and drove the vehicle into an object

that caused damages to the vehicle.

If an Employee causes damages to company property, the company will have to conduct the following procedures before they can deduct from the employee,

- Ensure that the damages were caused throughout the course of the Employee’s employment and confirm that the Employee was at fault.

- Ensure that the Employee had a fair chance to have representation regarding the incident and provide reasoning as to why they should not be held liable.

-The total amount which the Employer will deduct does not exceed the actual amount of damages caused by the Employee.

-And that the deductions made are not more than a quarter of the employee’s total remuneration for the time period.

Point two refers to payment of goods by the Employee.

This will come into effect if Employees have an account to buy goods from the company. When deducting for payment of goods, the Employer must ensure that the goods purchased by the employee are specified in quantity and nature.

Point three refers to deductions according to Law, Collective Agreement, Court Order or ArbitrationAward.

These types of deductions refer to PAYE, Union subscriptions and benefits as specified in Collective agreements, namely Provident fund, Leave Pay fund and so forth.

Furthermore, Employers are permitted to deduct from the employee’s remuneration if ordered to do so by a Court and/or CCMA/Bargaining Council.

These deductions may not exceed 25% of the employee’s remuneration.

Point four refers to over payments of remuneration.

Over payments towards Employees sometimes occur and the good news for Employers is that they can legally claim the amount back from the Employee.

However, this may only occur if there was a calculation error in calculating the employee’s remuneration and/or if the employee acknowledged receipt of an amount greater than what they received.

Employers are still advised to contact a Labour Consultant/Lawyer before making any deduction from an Employee’s remuneration as each Bargaining Council’s CollectiveAgreement differs as to what is permitted and/or not permitted.

This article aims to provide general information and does not constitute legal advice. For more information contact 054 333 1115 /6 or email ontvangs@joblaw.co.za.

Feel like becoming a digital nomad but don’t want to stray too far from home? Now you can go just next door.

With Namibia’s new Digital Nomad Programme, you can get a visa to live and work in the country for six months. The visa allows our participants to work, travel and study in Namibia, and you can apply for it online.

All you need (besides the usual travel documents, insurance, and police clearance) is to show your proof of income or

funds to sustain yourself and dependants. You need to have $2,000 (about R37,000) per month for yourself, $1,000 (R18,000) per month for an accompanying spouse, and $500 (R9,000) per accompanying child per month.

The visa application costs $62, the equivalent of a bit over R1,000.

This cost is comparable to Malaysia’s digital nomad visa, but significantly cheaper than Thailand’s offer. It is also far cheaper than visas for

European and North and CentralAmerican countries.

The cost of living in Windhoek is cheaper than in CapeTown or Johannesburg, but eating out is more pricey. The rent in Swakopmund is cheaper than CapeTown and Johannesburg, but eating out and buying groceries will set you back between 4% and 7% more.

Namibia has decent connectivity and a 98% national network coverage footprint. This means that you can connect to the internet from essentially anywhere in the country. Monthly plans are mostly below R1,000 per month.

If you want to be more mobile, just note that the cellphone service gets patchy the farther from main centres you travel, and not all resorts and national parks have reliable wi-fi. Once you are there and settled (and have rented a car, everything in Namibia is very far) these are some of the main attractions the Namibians

Have Money.

suggest you try out:

Hike the Fish River Canyon in theAi-Ais/Richtersveld Park in the south of the country. It is second only to the Grand Canyon in size.

Fly in a hot air balloon over Sossusvlei, home to the largest sand dunes in the world.

Explore the dunes of the Sandwich Harbour, where the desert meets the sea.

Do a half-day tour of Windhoek and discover both sides of the city including the Katutura township.

For wildlife photography, Etosha National Park in the north offers classic safari tours by an open vehicle.

Visit the ancient rock engravings atTwyfelfontain, that dates back to an estimated 6,000 years.

Go stargazing in the NamibRand Nature Reserve. It is one of the most surreal experiences as the International Dark-Sky Association declared the reserve as the first dark sky reserve inAfrica.

Visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop.

Thank you So Much For Your Help and Assistance

The Kgalagadi region, specifically the KgalagadiTransfrontier Park, Botswana and Mier sides, has been devastated by a wildfire over the past week. Caused by lightning, the fire increased in intensity and our team was on call to support as needed.

The fire - that started in the Mier area on the 12th of October - was difficult to contain with farmers and community members divided all over the region due to the flames surrounding us. From all of us at Kgalagadi Lifestyle Lodge, we thank the farmers and members of the community driving from Upington, Keimoes and surrounds to help us.

On the morning of the 14th October, the winds changed and the fire seemed contained.Afew of the neighbouring farms has been completely burnt down and they managed to stop the fire roughly 1km from our game fence. We are grateful, but our thoughts are with the beautiful farms that were destroyed.

The increased winds on Saturday, 15th October saw the fire grow yet again and more of our surrounding farms were destroyed. At times, the battled seemed lost and to make it worse is the fact that there is no signal to get word out which was quite a challenge.Thank you to the Upington Fire Department

and municipal sewerage trucks that came to help with water due to the lack of water in the region.

In between fighting fires, there was a baby ostrich frantically running around and no other ostriches were in sight. We rescued the baby ostrich, which is believed to be about one week old, and have adopted her as our own. Lauretta, as we have named here, is our reminder that through great disaster, there is always still hope. We are currently raising her at the Lodge and hope to release her when she is older The fire was officially contained in the evening of the 15th of October. More than approx 180 000 acres of land burnt to the ground in the Mier area, with an unknown amount of acres lost in the Park too.

The Kalahari is not really known for fires of this magnitude and fires of this extreme nature are very rare. We are grateful that no human lives have been lost and we are devasted by the loss of animal lives killed by the fire.

We want to extend our greatest gratitude to friends of the Lodge for the calls and messages to check in on us.

ORION Minerals said it was trialling water retreatment technology that would extract minerals for sale from contaminated mine water

The water would then be supplied for use by regional farmers.

The trial is part of the Orion’s dewatering campaign prior to restarting mining at the Prieska Copper-Zinc Project situated in the Northern Cape province.

“Any technology or new process that offers benefits to our key stakeholders and local host communities while supporting shareholder returns will always

be prioritised in our operating plans,” said Errol Smart, MD and CEO of Orion Minerals.

The project is spearheaded by Orion and its technology partner Free Radical Process Design which developed the know-how –called Rotowinner water treatment technology – with the University of Pretoria.

Rotowinner would extract sodium hydroxide and iron oxide which are used in the chemical industry. Calcium and magnesium would also be extracted and be made available for use agricultural nutrients, Orion said.

In terms of a feasibility study on

the Prieksa Copper-Zinc Project in 2020, which estimated a capital cost ofA$432m, the open pit was to be mined last. But a new plan has been hatched in which the open pit will be mined first in order to generate shortterm cash flow

In addition to this, however,

Orion is seeking to extract ore from remnant underground pillars in the previously mined orebody as well as the dewatering the Prieska Deeps section of the mine in preparation for its eventual mining. - Miningmx

Hoërskool Martin Oosthuizen
Bladsy 31Vrydag 21 Oktober 2022

So was geboorte geskenk aan my gedig ‘Krulkopkind’.

Astronomers have discovered a unique black hole, hosted by a galaxy around one billion light years away from Earth, spewing a fiery jet at a neighbouring galaxy

The black hole located within galaxy RAD12 appears to be ejecting the jet only towards its merging companion galaxy, named RAD12-B. Usually, jets are ejected in pairs, moving in opposite directions at relativistic speeds, but, in this case, only one jet is seen coming from RAD12, which remains a puzzle to astronomers.

The mysterious nature of RAD12 was previously observed in 2013 using optical data from the Sloan Digitised Sky Survey (SDSS) and radio data from the Very Large Array (FIRSTsurvey).

While a conical stem of young plasma is seen being ejected from the centre and reaches far beyond the visible stars of

Telescope Helps Find Black Hole Spewing

RAD12, observations with the Giant Meterwave RadioTelescope (GMRT) in India revealed that the fainter and older plasma extends far beyond the central conical stem and flares out like the cap of a mushroom (seen in red in the tricolour image).

Located in Pune, India, GMRTis a powerful instrument for investigating a variety of radio astrophysical problems ranging from the nearby Solar system to the edge of the observable Universe.

"We are excited to have spotted a rare system that helps us understand radio jet feedback of supermassive black holes on star formation of galaxies during mergers. Observations with the GMRTand data from various other telescopes such as the MeerKATradio telescope strongly suggest that the radio jet in RAD12 is colliding with the companion galaxy," says research

lead DrAnanda Hota.

is built and run by the South African RadioAstronomy Observatory (SARAO).

The findings are published in the journal Monthly Notices of the RoyalAstronomical Society (Letters).

SA Post Office Warns Of Customs Fee Scam

The SouthAfrican Post Office (Sapo) has urged customers to be aware of a new scam doing the rounds.

Fraudulent e-mails are sent to customers requesting payment of outstanding customs fees. The e-mail urges the customer to do the payment online.

“The SAPost Office has become aware of e-mails meant to convince the receiver to pay money into the account of fraudsters,” Sapo said.

“Members of the public receive an e-mail stating that a parcel

addressed to them is being retained because customs fees on it are outstanding.

“The notice entices them to click on a link which leads them to a website where they can make a payment to release the fictitious parcel.

“E-mails sent from the server of the SAPost Office originate from @postoffice.co.za.The scam e-mails are sent from different servers.”

It said the e-mail sent by scammers include a parcel number that starts with the

letters ZA.This was not generated by Sapo and when tracked on the Sapo website the parcel number will not be able to issue any result.

Sapo has urged anyone who receives the e-mail to delete it immediately

“If there are customs fees payable on a parcel posted from abroad, the client pays the fees when they collect the parcel.

“The Post Office gives customers the opportunity to check a parcel before they officially take it into possession,

and therefore does not require the payment of any fees before the time of collection.

“The Post Office normally sends an SMS when a parcel is ready for collection and never requests an EFTor online payment before a parcel is collected. “Any request for an electronic payment should be viewed as a scam,” it said.

Members of the public are encouraged to contact the tollfree crime buster hotline on 0800 020 070 with any information about postal crimes. - DFA

Kimberley Junior Skate Sensation Boipelo Awuah Gets

First Prize at the Street Lines Skate Tournament in Pretoria

KIMBERLEYjunior skate sensation BoipeloAwuah took top honours at the weekend when she participated in the women’s section for the second instalment of the Street Lines SkateTournament held at Pretoria’sThrashers Park on Saturday Organiser Ryan van der Spuy reported that the second Street Lines Skate Tournament presented by LW Mag and Dragon Energy in association with Dickies, Garmin and GoPro saw skaters from various parts of theAfrican continent converge to compete in the tournament that saw Moses Adams and BoipeloAwuah taking top honours in the men’s and women’s divisions respectively

Atotal of 70 skateboarders –15 women and 55 men –battled it out in the qualifying rounds, vying for their chance to impress the judges and score enough points to make it through to the finals. Skaters were pitted against each other in two 45-second runs per competitor with the top scoring run counting. The judges took consistency, difficulty, style and use of the park into account when making their decisions of who should advance.

Six women and 15 men ultimately made the cut and competed for their share of the R40,000 prize purse that also included Garmin Instinct 2 Smartwatches and Dickies apparel.

The finals saw each skater take part in a further two 45second run heats before moving into four ‘BestTrick’ attempts, with the top scoring run and top three best tricks counting towards their final score.

In the women’s division, Olympian and defending Street Lineschampion, BoipeloAwuah of Kimberley skated to victory once again showcasing her skill and talent throughout the skatepark.

Her run included a Noseslide on the down rail, Backside 180 on the pyramid, Front Boardslide on the flat bar, Backside 50-50 on the ledge, Fakie Half Cab to Regular and a Crooked Grind.

Event newcomer, Rebecca Wyborn of Johannesburg, put on a brilliant challenge landing a Boardslide on the down rail, a Pop Shove-It over the hip, early Garb on the spine, a Boardslide to flat and an Ollie down the stair set to finish just behindAwuah in second place.

Natalie Bramley of Kimberley rounded off the podium in third place with a Nollie 360 ShoveIt,Axel Stall, 50-50 on the ledge, 180 onto the Pyramid and a Boneless put into her run.

When asked about this year’s tournament,Awuah said, “This win means a lot to me and shows me that I’m still capable at performing at that level, and the tricks I was able to do I am very happy with. I was super excited coming into this competition and everything was how I expected it to be, great energy and atmosphere.

“Rebecca (Wyborn) impressed me a lot with her consistency, she’s still very young and I feel in the future she’ll definitely be a challenge and that’s exciting for me as well,” she added.

As the men’s finals kicked off rainfall rolled in resulting in an unsafe park to compete on. The event officials deliberated and the decision was made to call off the rest of the competition and take the earlier qualifying results as the final call for the podium finishers.

MosesAdams (CapeTown) found himself in first place after putting down an impressive qualifying run stacked with big and difficult tricks like the Nollie Crooked Grind, Flip Rock to Fakie, Switch Front Boardslide, SwitchTailslide,Tre Flip and a Switch Smith Grind.

Jamie de Villiers (KwaZuluNatal) was on form linking together trick after trick that featured a Smith Grind, Back Lipslide on the rail, Feeble Back Lipslide, BackTailslide, Tre Flip and a Kickflip Front Boardslide to finish in second place.

Khule Ngubane (KZN), who finished third looked to be a favourite to take the overall lead and had a good chance of doing so had the finals

taken place.

Street Lines organiser, Ryan van der Spuy said, “Skateboarding is a massively growing and diverse sport in SouthAfrica and to have so many athletes come out to compete is something we are incredibly proud of.

“Everyone stepped up their game

this year resulting in an exciting and closely-fought tournament, especially in the women’s division where we saw a lot of progression. We can’t thank our event partners, the competitors and fans enough for the support and making Street Lines the premier skateboarding event it has become.”-dfa
