Furmer's new Medicinal Garden Kit was developed by Nicole Apelian, Ph.D. - a herbalist and biologist. Diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis at 29, she has used natural herbal remedies to manage her condition. Containing the seeds for 10 plants with healing properties, the new Medicinal Garden Kit enables customers to become more self-reliant and take care of their health naturally. Included in the kit is a guide that teaches customers how to make home remedies from their plants.

The herb garden kit contains a complete selection of handpicked, non-GMO, high-quality seeds, including chamomile, calendula, chicory, marshmallow, California poppy, evening primrose, yarrow, lavender, echinacea, and feverfew seeds.

Indigenous uses of medicinal plants can be traced back to ancient civilizations. Communities such as the San people of SouthernAfrica

possess in-depth knowledge of the use of herbal therapy to treat health conditions and maintain well-being.The kit's creator Dr Apelian developed her scientific study and use of medicinal plants during an extended period spent living with San Bushmen in the Kalahari Desert.

"Imagine stepping out into your own backyard and picking the medicinal plants and herbs you need, taking them into your kitchen, and turning them into tinctures, teas, salves, and poultices," said Dr Apelian.

Dr Apelian created the garden kit to give people access to a natural health resource that they can rely on even in the event of a crisis affecting health systems.

She explains that chamomile (Matricaria chamomilla) has been used to relax aching muscles and joints, treat digestive problems, soothe irritated eyes, and calm eczema, while Calendula (Calendula officinalis) has been reported to

speed up wound healing, cleanse the lymphatic system, and act as an anti-inflammatory agent. English lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Vera) is believed to be effective against fungal infections, acne, and psoriasis.

Frumer's medicinal garden kit includes planting, growing, and harvesting instructions. The seeds produce perennial or self-

seeding annual plants and are good companions for vegetables and fruit trees.

Dr Apelian said: "I turn to my small backward pharmacy whenever I'm in pain, catch a cold, have a fever, and so on. I haven't stepped foot in a pharmacy in a very long time. I have all I need here in my backyard for me and my whole family."

1.Eerste weergawes is sleg.

“The first draft of anything is shit.”

— Ernest Hemingway

“The first draft is just you telling yourself the story.” ―Terry Pratchett

‘n Mens het nooit alle kennis in pag nie. Ek leer nog heel my lewe lank daagliks nuwe vaardighede aan (lank gelede as onderwyseres, in die korporatiewe sektor en ook nou, as skrywer).

“Get it down.Take chances. It may be bad, but it’s the only way you can do anything really good.”

William Faulkner

2. Daar is nie 'n geheime formule

Rowling is blykbaar ‘plotters.’

My plot

‘Analysis paralysis.’

“To write is human, to edit is divine.” — Stephen King

4. 'Skryf' is 'n werkwoord Skryf’is nie verniet ‘n werkwoord

My punte was ook goed. Beteken dit enigiets in my skryfloopbaan?

Ek skryf jeugfiksie, want ek wil.

Die eerste 3 000 woorde is elke keer vir my ‘n nagmerrie en daarna wonder ek of ek uiteindelik ooit by 10 000 gaan uitkom. Wat wou 50 000 of 60 000!

Aanhouer wen. Byt vas.As ek my droom kon bereik, kan jy ook.

Botswana supplies 70% of De Beers’rough diamonds. Last month, Masisi threatened to walk away from talks to renew the sales deal unless Botswana gets a larger share of output from the joint venture. He did not specify the size of the share it sought.

president.

“It’s very clear that, front and foremost in the president’s mind is the interest of the Botswana people. We as De Beers want to play our role in a strong, strategic partnership. I’m very confident that this partnership will go forward in a very good way,” Cook told said after the meeting.

Botswana will not drop its demand to sell a bigger share of the diamonds produced by its joint venture with De Beers, President Mokgweetsi Masisi said onThursday, raising the stakes in talks to renew a sales deal that expires in June.

Botswana and De Beers mine diamonds under an equally-

owned joint venture, Debswana.Three quarters of Debswana’s production, which was 24 million carats in 2022, is sold to De Beers. The balance is sold to state-owned Okavango Diamond Company (ODC), which was set up under the current 2011 sales deal as Botswana sought to market gems outside the De Beers

“Besides the fact that the diamonds are ours, it doesn’t make sense for us to continue to relegate ourselves to participating in the rough space only. So, it’s only logical that we want more and we are going to get more. But through negotiation,” Masisi said.

De Beers Chief Executive OfficerAl Cook, who met Masisi in Gaborone on Friday morning, said he had a constructive discussion with the

De Beers says Botswana’s government receives more than 80% of returns from Debswana, including taxes and royalties.

TheAngloAmerican Plc unit, which also has mines in Canada, Namibia and South Africa, sold rough diamonds worth $4.3 billion in 2022, a 13% increase over the 2021 sales. ODC’s sales were $1.2 billion in 2022, up from $963 million in 2021. - SABC News

Dear Premier.... a letter from a N.C. Resident

Dear Premier,

Thank you for talking to the people of the Northern Cape on Thursday, 2 March, in your state of the province address delivered in Calvinia, a town nestled between the Hantam Mountains and the Oorlogskloof River

C. Louis Leipoldt (1880-1947), a medical doctor, reporter, dramatist and food expert, wrote lovely poems on this area.

Since you also spokeAfrikaans onThursday, as you usually do, it is fitting to share one of his

well-known stanzas:

“ ’n Handvol gruis uit die Hantam / My liewe, lekker Hantam-wyk! / ’n Handvol gruis en gedroogde blare, / Waboom-blare, ghnarrabos-blare! /Arm was ek gister, en nou is ek ryk.”

Thanks to the rich sonance of the “g”, one can actually feel and hear the “handvol gruis”. Lovely!

Before getting to the purpose of the letter, please allow me to remark that it is adorable that you always have special local guests at such ocassions, whom you welcome by the name; and that you smile and shake hands with

as many guests as possible.

Premier, synonymous with you and your goals as leader of the Northern Cape is the phrase “modern, growing and successful province”.To achieve that, one basic principle seriously needs attention: It seems that many MECs and senior departmental staff do not know how to read a watch in order to be on time.

Many moons ago, the South African Defence Force used the expression, “hurry up and wait”.

Unfortunately, it is true that one has to hurry up quite often for government events, just to wait

for more than an hour, even.

With this, keep the saying, “time is money” (in mind).

If the principle of being on time can be followed, it will have a positive ripple effect: learners will be on time for school, scheduled tasks will be completed in time . . . the list goes on.

In not doing that, one can actually miss the bus – in more than one sense of the word.

Sincerely yours,

Canteen Koppie At Klipdrift - Barkly West

Canteen Koppie, a national monument of historical value, occurs next to Barkly West on the north bank of the Vaal River Diamonds were discovered there in 1869 and it became the first alluvial diamond diggings in SouthAfrica. The digging continued, albeit on and off in the years leading up to 1948 when the site was proclaimed a national monument.

The sediments occur in a structurally controlled and glacially modified depression within the andesitic lavas of the Archaean Ventersdorp Supergroup. The fluvial gravels were deposited, and locally mixed with the colluvium, in the downstream end of a palaeoloop of the Vaal River as a splay deposit where the channel abruptly widens as it exits this narrow loop.

The gravel accumulation has been described as the 12 m to 16 m terrace package linked to theYounger Gravels of the Vaal Basin and correlated with the Pleistocene Rietputs Formation. There are two gravel facies associations and one sand facies within the splay unit. Colluvial facies are dominant

particularly in the upper part and are composed of large andesite fragments which are mostly subangular and lacking obvious abrasion features suggesting that these are of local derivation. The gravel of the fluvial facies are crudely cross-bedded and consist of small to medium sized exotic sub-rounded pebbles that have been mixed with the local andesite boulders in the toes of the scree deposits. These facies are more prominent in the lower part of the succession. The red sand facies occurs as thin cover particularly in the distal part of the gravel units and increases in thickness in the lee of the gravel splay The exotic clasts in the fluvial gravel are derived from the palaeo-Vaal, erosion of nearby Dwyka sediments which can still be found along the north bank of the loop, and by reworking of higher level and older gravels, remnants of which are still present on top of the hill at Canteen Koppie. The input of the coarse andesite clasts is linked to scree slope deposits fed by exfoliation of local bedrock from this hill. The upward coarsening trend of this infill reflects the gradual abandonment of the loop by the palaeo-Vaal and its inability to

remove the coarse colluvium during those latter stages of its occupation of this palaeo-loop.A climatic change to more arid periods might have had some influence.

Canteen Koppie has also produced an abundance of Acheulian StoneAge artefacts. These are present in both sedimentary facies suggesting that this splay deposit is at least Late Pliocene to Lower and Middle Pleistocene in age.

Recent dating of the overlying

sands indicates that these are at least 125 000 years old. Finally an analysis of the mining records suggests that this splay deposit might have produced between 10 000 carats and 15 000 carats of diamonds which would have expressed itself in the region of three to five carats per hundred tonnes. The oversize clasts of the scree deposits would have acted as important traps for the diamonds. -

Mental Health Affecting More South Africans Daily

Arecent study assessed the prevalence of mental health problems among SouthAfricans adults. They found that SouthAfricans who faced adverse experiences as children had a higher likelihood of probable depression or probable anxiety in adulthood.

Researchers explored socioeconomic and demographic associations with depression, anxiety and adverse childhood experiences.

experiences in early childhood had a higher risk of probable depression or probable anxiety in adulthood than people who did not face adversity in childhood. (We say “probable” because our study recorded the presence of symptoms. The respondents weren’t diagnosed by a trained mental health professional.)

Mental health problems among adults are an ever-increasing public health concern. These include depression, anxiety, and conditions associated with bad childhood experiences such as abuse.

In a recent study we assessed the prevalence of mental health problems among SouthAfrican adults. We also explored socioeconomic and demographic associations with depression, anxiety and adverse childhood experiences.

We found that SouthAfricans who were exposed to adverse

We also found that the symptoms of mental illness were more commonly reported by people with certain demographic characteristics. Probable depression and probable anxiety were more frequently reported among adults who were: retired and older than 65 years; widowed, divorced or separated; living in metropolitan areas; and with only primary school education. The characteristics that were significant in our study tend to be associated with relative poverty

This confirms what has previously been suggested. That poverty and rural-urban differences are associated with mental health risk.

In 2009, nearly 20% of South African adults suffered from impaired mental health.According to a 2013 study, the prevalence of depression was highest in the Eastern Cape (31.4%) – one of the country’s poorest provinces. Research done among informal settlement residents in 2021 found that nearly one in every five women reported moderate to severe levels of anxiety And more than half of SouthAfrican adults have been exposed to adverse experiences in childhood and adolescence.

The prevalence of mental illness risk varies across the provinces. The socioeconomic and demographic determinants of mental illness also vary across the provinces. These findings underscore a need for targeted and accessible interventions and counselling programmes.

Mental health problems

We interviewed 3,402 adults across the nine provinces of SouthAfrica between September and October

2021. Most of the participants were under the age of 44. We used clinically validated screening surveys to detect symptoms of depression, anxiety and adverse childhood experiences. Respondents were asked questions about how often – in the previous two-week period – they had been bothered by problems listed in the screening survey

Probable depression had five levels: minimal, mild, moderate, moderately severe and severe.

More than a quarter (25.7%) of respondents reported moderate to severe symptoms of probable depression. The Northern Cape province reported the highest prevalence (38.8%).The Free State province reported the lowest prevalence (14.7%). -News24

Follow the Sun and Not the Crowds Beautiful Stories of the Kgalagadi

Taking a slow drive to KamquaJanuary 2023

My room was like an ice box on my return to camp until I realized the air conditioner was on 16 degrees and not 18. I always make sure before turning in at night that everything's organized for the morning and that apart from making coffee my camera gear and padkos for the road is all sorted and just needs to be put into the vehicle. I rarely use the extension cord to connect my fridge to the mains as my dual battery has plenty of power in it to last me through the night. It was pitch dark at 5.15am as I loaded my things I was seriously glad for my head torch, as it frees up ones hands and after encountering a rather large puffy outside my chalet door at Nossob on a previous trip I am extremely cautious stepping out in the dark and always check thoroughly. That morning luckily my friends next door alerted me to its presence. First down at the gate to collect my permit. My lights continue to flicker, and I drive where possible without them on and in no time my eyes had adjusted, and it was so nice driving without lights.

Decide to drive up to Kamqua Picnic spot, just 60 km away and ever hopeful of finding Meira my favourite leopard up around Batulama. There is no general game.Acouple tortoises, then an immature PCG (Pale Chanting Goshawk) on the ground feeding on ants or termites.Alone wildebeest, then a lone gemsbok in the riverbed and then as I drew closer to Kamqua picnic spot giraffe become plentiful. The calcrete ridges are covered with yellow flowering devil's thorn, dubbeltjies (Tribulus zeyheri). The flowers are pale yellow and apparently eaten by game but may be poisonous when wilted. It's a beautiful sight as they take hold in every little crevice along the calcrete slopes. There's only giraffe spoor in the road. Every so often my attention is drawn to a flash of delicate pink... the vleililies, gifbol (Nerine laticoma) that are flowering. These are geophytes and have underground storage organs and survive well in arid conditions, preferring clay depressions in calcerous plains and seen in midsummer after good rain. The very little rain that has fallen has been enough to see them flower

I am over the moon to see them because often all that remains is the tumbleweed head. The spherical inflorescence is a mass of pale to rose pink flowers with a pale vertical greenish line on each flower and these lilies appear any time between early January and late March and are short lived. The plant causes itching when handled. Called ' seeroogblom' inAfrikaans, and I think this is precisely what it does... makes your eyes sore and itchy

While sitting at Kamqua picnic spot, now alone as the other two vehicles had moved off, I think back on a time when I used to bring my boys to the Kgalagadi and how they just loved cooking up a breakfast storm of note here, and how today I can think of nothing I want to do less, but it was fun to do back then. I also recall the beautiful shady trees. I plan on heading back and taking the Lower Dune Road. The morning is alot cooler with a cold breeze and stays around 23 degrees for ages. I wear a jacket it's so chilly. Ummed and aahed about taking the top dune road as it was still early but decided a touch too far. Decided that perhaps after crossing the lower dune road I could shoot up to where the lanner concentration and termite eruption was the day before and see what if anything was happening. The condition of the lower dune road is fantastic, and I hardly feel a corrugation. The men maintaining the roads work non-stop and really do an amazing job. It's quiet around the termite eruption spot from the day before so decide to take a slow drive back to camp. I spot an agama lizard on a rock outcrop close by the roadside. Here I sit photographing it, intrigued by its antics... ever alert. Its head is large and distinct from the body The eyes are relatively small, but the ear openings are large and easily visible. It appears to have spiny scales and I check my Guide to Reptiles of SouthernAfrica book (which by the way is a great book to have with you) byAlexander & Marais to find out more and try ID this agama. Has spiny scales with a row of raised scales or spines running along the vertebral line. I call it a spiny agama but is probably a rock agama. The digits have strong, recurved claws and the markings are

particularly striking on this one. An insect flies close by and immediately it began bobbing its head and body up and down in the hopes of catching it. Vehicles stop to check what it is that I'm drawn to and hear from one couple that north of Nossob they saw many of the blue headed agamas in the driedoring roadside bushes, which I think has the lovelyAfrikaans name 'koggelmander'.

Back atTwee Rivieren and while relaxing on my verandah I have a few visitors... 2 yellow mongooses, a ground squirrel, 2 laughing doves and a cheeky white-browed sparrow weaver all in search of something to eat. I move my vehicle frequently to get the shade. The long days allow for one to do a few different

things. Returning to camp around midday, making something to eat, resting up, downloading photos, recharging batteries and then going out for a couple hours later in the day works particularly well in summer when the gate closing time is 7pm. While quietish out there I reflect a touch on what the day brought...somehow in the Kgalagadi I always return with something to be thrilled about... and wow my morning's drive and seeing the pink vleililies flowering was particularly special... and then the calcrete ridges up around Kamqua picnic spot covered with the yellow flowers of the dubbeltjie, devil's thorn plants...what a sight those splashes of yellow were...Kgalagadi Sightings- Fayne Connelly ·
