My ouers kon egter nie hierdie items vir my bekostig nie, wat my minderwaardig laat voel het.

UPINGTON
Van Die Stowwerige Strate Lewe: Die Inspirerende Reis Van 'n Herstelde Jong Man

Dr. Wendy Panaino spends her time in the vast, red-hued Kalahari desert, researching and documenting a mythological animal that few of us will ever see in real life. This animal is the pangolin, a solitary, primarily nocturnal creature that looks like something out of a fairytale. It is covered in scales and can roll up into a ball to protect itself, with a spiky tail that can fend off predators. The animal makes its home in the dry, arid climate of the Kalahari, and is currently critically endangered from poaching, owing to the demand for its meat and scales from Asia.

Dr. Panaino works in the research wing ofTswalu Kalahari Reserve, a privately owned game reserve in the Northern Cape, SouthAfrica. The property hosts guests from all around the world who want to see wildlife but also functions as an ambitious conservation project founded in 2006. From a small seed fund, theTswalu Foundation has grown into a world leader in the field of environmental research within the southern Kalahari and regularly attracts scientific teams who visit from around the world.

Panaino was seduced by the Kalahari. Having grown up in Johannesburg, she made her way to the bush doing research for her master’s degree, followed by the higher pursuit of a Ph.D.As a scientist studying both animals and climate, she’s witnessed dynamism in this portion of the desert: “I have been a big fan of the climatic extremes I have witnessed over the last seven years in the Kalahari, she said. “From very arid (but not true desert), with the landscapes presenting vast, open, and red sandy scenes, to very wet conditions, with waterfalls, springs, and the most magical variety of green colors carpeting the landscape.”

Panaino interacts with and studies the elusive pangolin as a way to study a broader topic: climate change. Her Ph.D. work aims to understand the potential responses of Kalahari pangolins to climate change, related to diet, activity patterns, and body temperature. The location she works in is perfect to observe these changes. “The Kalahari is recognized as a climate change “hot spot”, where the effects of climate change are predicted to be profound, she said. “The Kalahari Endangered Ecosystem Project (KEEP) aims

to understand how the Kalahari ecosystem might respond to environmental change so that priority species may be identified and to make better predictions about how changing climate might impact the workings of this system.”

By identifying the most vulnerable species to climate change, better conservation policies can be made based on data and tangible parameters. Panaino further explained the nuances of the area she is studying: “What is traditionally referred to as the “Kalahari desert” is most of the interior of Botswana and parts of northern SouthAfrica (where Tswalu is located) and is characterized by temperature extremes and little available surface water making it an area particularly susceptible to the effects of climate change,” she said.

With pressure mounting on African ecosystems stemming from population increases, the overall demand for water will more than double in the first half of the 21st century Thus, more and more emphasis is being placed on research to understand the impacts of climate change inAfrica as well as to find ways to mitigate the threats in the medium to long term.

Panaino suggests that the southern hemisphere is behind much of the northern hemisphere in truly understanding and studying climate change and thinks there’s a missing link in research that is vitally needed, givenAfrica’s rising importance on the world stage in terms of population growth. “What lacks is collaborative, multi-species, multi-aspect research to answer bigger ecosystem-level questions related to climate change, which is vital for understanding ecosystems so that we can conserve them,” she said.

At the center of this important research is Panaino’s relationship with this elusive and immensely unique animal. To Panaino, the fascination is inexplicable: “It is one of those situations where you have to experience it to know. When you see a pangolin you are almost mesmerized by it, but you simply cannot explain it…They are also a relatively understudied mammal, making observing them that much

more special — you could learn something new about them at any moment.”

One of her favorite parts of the job is also interacting with the thousands of guests from around the world that visitTswalu to go on game drives. The groups are welcome to join her on research, in the hopes they will actually see the nocturnal creature, though Panino issues no guarantee of seeing them. She jokes that she needed to turn partially nocturnal as a researcher in order to interface with them. The life of a researcher is not always easy: technological failures led to some data loss on tracked animals and Panaino says that a field biologist has to be adaptable and work around the constraints of a remote, highly changing area such as the Kalahari.

While most of her research is for broader academic knowledge, she does also serve as a diplomat of sorts, spreading word about the importance of conservation to safari guests that visit the property And fortunately, the awareness and depth of knowledge are growing: “Many guests I have spoken to over the last three years have expressed

that they are choosing more destinations that have a strong research and conservation angle so that they feel like their trip makes a meaningful contribution to conservation, she said. “I have also noticed a change in the types of questions I get asked about pangolins…Over the last few years, however, many of the questions have been focussed more on global pangolin conservation efforts, and how pangolins impact their ecosystem, for example. I have thoroughly enjoyed these deeper conservation-related questions as the conversations have ended up feeling more impactful.”

Panaino’s job is utterly unique, sitting at the intersection of huge issues of climate change in a particularly vulnerable part of the world, juxtaposed with a curious, elusive animal that looks dreamt up in science fiction. But broadly, her mission is one of protecting biodiversity in one of the world’s most beautiful and unique places: “As a naturalist at heart, I believe that the Kalahari is an incredibly special place… and deserves to be witnessed and explored by anyone who has a passion for the outdoors.Above all, it is a place worthy of protection by us all.”

Skryfwenke: Wys en Vertel

Praktiese wenke:

“What does he mean?Taking flying lessons?” wilAdriaan weet.

Balans is egter belangrik. ‘n Mens kan nie slegs wys nie.

Die beroemde skrywer,Anton Chekhov, het na oorlewering gesê: “Don’t tell me the moon is shining. Show me the glint of light on the broken glass.”

Vertel die vervelige en wys die opwindende!

Wanneer vertel ‘n mens?

My skoene knars oor die witgerypte gras. Ek ril en trek my serp stywer om my nek vas.

Wys, help jou m.a.w. met karakterisering.

Vermy bywoorde, byvoorbeeld: Ken lyk opgewonde.

“Don’t even ask.”

Lekker skryf!

Atowel on his knees against sunburn, a thermos of coffee and boiled eggs: Frans Hugo, 90-year-old editor, begins his weekly 1,200 km journey through the SouthAfrican Karoo desert to deliver his newspapers.

The energetic old gentleman is used to it. It has been forty years since Charl Francois Hugo, known as Frans, climbs into his faithful sedan everyThursday for this long journey from Calvinia, less than 3,000 souls in the middle of this immense far-west, in the south of the country. If he stopped, hisAfrikaans language newspapers –The Messenger, Die Noordwester and Die Oewernuus – would probably disappear with him.

His little transistor wedged into

the steering wheel, the car radio capitulated a long time ago, he begins his loop towards the northeast, then the south… “I stop in all the small towns”he toldAFPduring a recent tour

Departure at 1:30 a.m. for a return 18 hours later The time to deposit his batteries, using his cane, in a multitude of localities. Some have seen the recent influx of new inhabitants, artists, solitaries or originals fleeing the hustle and bustle of the big cities.

Eight pages inAfrikaans language

Like Frans, many here express themselves frankly, with simplicity. Living in such a lost corner requires autonomy, resourcefulness.Abit of

eccentricity can’t hurt. “In the Karoo, we talk about ‘pompdonkie'”a regularly moving water pump that empties the tanks. “I became a pompdonkie myself. I leave every week with the regularity of a metronome. I will stop when I am no longer physically able to do so”he predicted.

Born in CapeTown in 1932, he worked there as a journalist for twenty years, then in neighboring Namibia for ten years. “We worked day and night. I was less able to bear the pressure so I settled in the Karoo”he says.

“I was catching my breath when the owner of the print shop in Calvinia came to ask if I was interested. My daughter was, so

I thought that together with my son-in-law, they could run the business and I would help them. After a few months, they got bored and I found myself with this on my hands”he summarizes with an amused wink.

The Messenger was founded in 1975, the other two local newspapers in the early 1900s. Frans, his wife and three employees continue this legacy at a time when so many printed newspapers around the world are struggling to survive in the digital age. These weeklies of eight pages inAfrikaans, one of the eleven official languages in SouthAfrica, inherited from the Dutch colonists, sometimes publish here and there a paper or an advertisement in English.

Abravado nothing

Frans, white mane and looking like an old sea dog, is annoyed by those who consume their information online. “We print fewer newspapers”. But at 1,300 copies per week, the need for local information remains relevant, he believes.

Its newsroom looks like a museum with its old Heidelbergtype printing press and its guillotines (paper-cutting machines here called guillotines), which had been abandoned in favor of computers for thirty years.Abravado, he says he is not worried about the future of his small press group: “No idea what will happen to him in five or ten years. But no, that doesn’t worry me.” - globeecho

Bring up the subject of truffles, and most people will likely think about the prized European varieties, such as the French black truffle or the Italian white truffle. However, did you know there are actually hundreds of species besides the European ones, some of which are also delightfully aromatic and delicious?

In this guide, we’ll discuss three lesser-known but still wonderfully edible gourmet truffles:

Pecan truffles

Kalahari truffles

Oregon white truffles

We’ll cover their classifications, where they grow and their ecological niche, the characteristics of each species, and how much they typically sell for

So without further ado, let’s dive in!

Truffles: Fungal Classification

Truffles are a kind of fungus that produce their fruiting bodies underground. They’re known as subterranean fungi of the Ascomycota phylum. The mushrooms of this phylum are classified by their sac-like fruiting bodies, known as the ascus, and include mushrooms such as morels and cup fungi.

The well-known species are all classified in theTuber genus. However, several other genera of truffles exist, including Kalaharituber,Terfezia,

Leucangium, Elaphomyces, Peziza, and Geopora. Hundreds of species exist, but only a handful are associated with luxury and fine dining.

KalahariTruffles

Our next species grows in the sandy, desert regions of Namibia. The Kalahari truffle of the Pezizaceae family belongs to a monotypic genus, meaning the genus only contains one species. In this case, the monotypic genus is Kalaharituber, and the species is pfeilii.

Ecology and Foraging

Colors and contrasts of lights in the Kalahari desert during the rainy season, make it a unique and wonderful place, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, Kalahari desert, SouthAfrica.

As mycorrhizal fungi, the Kalahari truffles play an important role in the ecological health of the Kalahari Desert. Mycologists have confirmed that this species is mycorrhizal, with several species of plants in the Kalahari Desert, including sorghum, bermudagrass, and the declining acacia trees. In their extreme desert environments, host plants depend on nutrient exchange with Kalaharituber pfeilii to thrive.

The Khoisan people living in the Kalahari Desert regions of Namibia, SouthAfrica, and Botswana have eaten Kalaharituber pfeilii for

centuries. They search for these subterranean mushrooms by looking for cracking on the desert ground in areas they’re known to exist, indicating a possible fruiting body growing close to the surface. These fungi develop their fruiting bodies after heavy rainfall, which most often occurs betweenApril-June.

KalahariTruffle Characteristics

These truffles have a sandy to pale-chestnut-brown exterior, typically smooth, firm, and irregularly round. They appear similar to potatoes. The interior is pale off-white.

Specimens can typically reach anywhere from 1-5 inches across.

People often describe the taste as buttery, nutty, and earthy Some compare its flavor to buttered corn with nutty

undertones. Its scent is grassy and savory

Culinary Value and Cost

These truffles are an integral part of the food and culture of locals. Kalahari truffles are caloricallydense and rich in fats, fiber, and vitamin B. People often prepare them fried, boiled, baked over coals, salted fresh, or grated fresh. When fried, they have a lovely texture, like crumbly cheese.

Compared to gourmet species from the US and Europe, Kalahari truffles sell for far less in local markets, at a few dollars per pound. This may be due to several reasons, including the widespread integration of Kalahari truffles into the local diet and a Western/Eurocentric undervaluing ofAfrican delicacies compared to Europe.https://a-z-animals.com/

If the allure of peace and neverending vistas are what you crave in your soul, check out this itinerary for seeing the best parts of his ravishing desert.

This itinerary is built around travellers flying in from South Africa, but can easily be done in reverse if you're driving in your own car from SouthAfrica - just remember to always have lots of water packed!

Day 1-2: Swakopmund

Travel: Landing at Hosea Kutako InternationalAirport, pick up your rental car and start taking the four-hour drive to Swakopmund - the town

constantly battling against the desert's attempts to take it back.

Stay:The outskirts of the town are dunes as far as the eye can see - and the best spot to view them is a stay at Desert Breeze Lodge.Their secluded chalets look out onto golden horizons.

Do: Book a quad bike tour through the dunes, or if you prefer something slower you can hop onto a camel and pretend you're in the Middle East.

Then head to the most popular desert attraction in-between Swakopmund and Walvis BayDune 7.This is the highest dune in Namibia - and claimed to be in the world - and a hike up will work those calve muscles. You can also try your hand at sandboarding, but be prepared to eat a lot of sand.

Day 3: Sandwich Harbour

Travel: Walvis Bay is a short half-an-hour drive from Swakopmund. Remember to stop in Swakopmund at the Ministry of Environment and

Travel:Take a detour into the unknown on a drive past dunes and historic settlements to the lands of Namib-Naukluft National Park.

Stay:Try something different by staying at the Gobabeb Namib Research Institute right in the middle of the park. They offer camping, villa and room accommodation to visitors, but must be booked far in advance.

Do: Nestled in-between the dunes, the research centre offers a guided nature and night walk - you can get a first-hand look at the Namib Desert ecosystem and at night try to find all the nightly creepy crawlies - from geckos to scorpions!

And remember to look up at the brilliant stars far from city lights.

Day 5: Sossusvlei

Travel: Prepare for a longer drive - about four hours and 40 minutes - to the breathtaking experience that is Sossusvlei. Stay:The area has many

Day 6-7: Lüderitz

Travel:After your jaunt in the dunes, prep for another long drive of more than six hours to the picturesque town of Lüderitz.

Stay:Again many options to choose from - self-catering to lodges to guesthouses. If you want to stay in a traditional German-style house, check out the Kratzplatz hotel.

Do: Nearby is the ghost town Kolmanskop filled with abandoned house reclaimed by the desert, creating ghostly vistas that would be any photographer's dream canvas. The part still inhabited is filled with architecturally quaint buildings from Namibia's colonial era and well worth a stroll.

Day 8-9:

Windhoek

Travel:The drive back to the Windhoek airport is about eight hours, so best to drive the whole day and stay over the night in Windhoek the day before your flight back. - News24

The police in Galeshewe, Kimberley, are investigating an inquest case following the discovery of the body of a female near the Gogga pump water station along the Barkly West Road.

SgtTimothy Sam, Galeshewe police communications officer, said on Friday, 6 January, that the age of the deceased is estimated to be between 60 and 70 years. She has two teeth in her mouth, is 1,58 m tall, and was wearing a bluish jersey top.

Her body was discovered on Friday, 23 December

Sam said the police are requesting the assistance of the public who might assist with the identification of the deceased and investigation of the case, to contact the investigation officer on 082-469-0130, 08600-10111, or via the MYSAPSApp.

“Shiloh is ‘n brawe jong man en hy veg hiedie siekte soos ‘n ware held.”

The Why –The reason behind our pedal

Primary goal is to raise awareness for Cystic Fibrosis (CF).

The face of our project is our local CF warrior Shiloh Grewar –We want to enable Shiloh of realizing his dream!

Which is making a difference in other CF warriors’lives.

What is CF?

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is an inherited disorder that causes severe damage to the lungs, digestive system and other organs in the body. Cystic fibrosis affects the cells that produce mucus, sweat and digestive juices.

The body makes very thick, sticky mucus. The mucus causes problems in the lungs, pancreas, and other organs. There is no cure for CF!

An interesting fact:

Why is CF called 65 Roses?

The “65 Roses” story dates back to 1965 when an observant 4year-old, hearing the name of his disease for the first time, pronounced cystic fibrosis as “65 Roses.”Today, “65 Roses” is a term often used by young children with cystic fibrosis to pronounce the name of their disease. - Find-It

Phenology - refers to the timing of biological events that happen every year. These events often signal the change in seasons — the appearance of blossoms in spring, leaves turning yellow, orange and red in autumn. The arrival and departure of birds. The first frog calls.

The fact that they happen with the change in seasons is no coincidence — each of these phenological events is triggered by the local weather in the days, weeks and months prior Phenological events are considered to be one of the most sensitive biological indicators of climate change.

As our climate is getting warmer, many of these phenological events across the world are happening increasingly early — at a global average rate of 2.3 days a decade.

In SouthAfrica, jacarandas blooming, Namaqualand daisies appearing and the migration of the brown-veined white butterfly are all occurring more than a month earlier than they did in the 1920s.

We know the dates have shifted because the events are such a spectacle that they are often reported in print and increasingly social media.

What phenological events can you look out for in 2023?

Summer

The brown-veined white butterflies (Belenois aurota) usually make their migration from the Kalahari to Mozambique during January While a very early flock of butterflies made its way through Johannesburg in late November last year, we might see a few more making their way north at the beginning of this year. Look out for them in the Kalahari and Karoo, in Johannesburg and as far west as Potchefstroom, in

Mpumalanga and even in Mozambique.

Cosmos, native to Mexico, is widespread across Gauteng and Mpumalanga, and found in smaller numbers across South Africa. It has a long flowering period throughout the summer months, but comes into full bloom as autumn approaches. You can usually get some great photos of the cosmos during the public holidays that break up the month ofApril. There are large fields of cosmos at Delta Park in Johannesburg, and lining the N17 through Mpumalanga.

Autumn

Autumn is synonymous with the falling of leaves. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in autumn, and new buds form and unfurl in springtime. Evergreen trees, by contrast, retain their leaves through the winter months. SouthAfrica has few indigenous deciduous trees. These include the baobab, tamboti and the white stinkwood. But many of the exotic trees are deciduous, such as maple, oak and plane trees, which line many streets of our cities.

During autumn we also notice birds preparing for their northward migration for winter Large birds, such as geese and ducks, fly in a V-formation to improve their energy efficiency, and they are often the most noticeable.Arange of birds migrate from Europe andAsia to SouthernAfrica and back each year, including swallows, swifts, falcons, storks, kingfishers, buzzards and bee-eaters.

Winter

Winter is characterised by dormancy in plants and hibernation in animals. Deciduous trees lose their leaves in winter, and grasses in the interior of SouthAfrica die back, leaving a yellow-brown landscape.

One major phenological event that takes place during winter is the sardine run. During June through to August, sardines migrate northeast off the Agulhas Bank. The peak of this migration, usually in late June or early July, is a major tourism. (Photo by RAJESH JANTILAL / AFP)

One major phenological event that takes place during winter is the sardine run. During June through toAugust, sardines migrate northeast off the Agulhas Bank. The peak of this migration, usually in late June or early July, is a major tourism fishing event along the South Coast of KwaZulu-Natal.The sardines are accompanied by their predators — dolphins, whales and sharks.

Towards the end of the winter months, we now start to see blossoms appearing. This is a feature of the phenological shifts. Fruit tree blossoms are often the first to be seen — apricot and peach trees often develop early blooms. The Namaqualand daisies start to bloom from around mid-August. This incredible wildflower display stretches along the West Coast and brings tourists to many towns in the region.

Spring

During the early spring months, we can expect to see blossoming intensify. In the northern Drakensberg towns of Ficksburg through to Fouriesburg, and in parts of the

southwestern Cape, you are likely to see cherry and apple blossoms. The air takes on a smell of jasmine in many gardens.Towards the end of September, jacarandas come into blossom. They’re most extensive in Pretoria and Johannesburg, but their purple flowers can be seen as far afield as Pietermaritzburg, Durban, Magoebaskloof and Paarl.

This list is not exhaustive. Each town and city has its own distinctive signs of the change in seasons. The first frost, or first snowfall. The first appearance of a particular plant or animal. The flurry of farmers sowing seeds or harvesting their produce.

As these events change their timing, does this mean the seasons are shifting? This remains an academic debate. There are a range of climatological and astronomical classifications for when seasons begin and end.

Either way, when you notice these annually recurrent events, take a photo. In decades’time, your records could be a phenologist’s gold mine.

Sudden Cardiac Arrest in Young People

An 8-year-old boy playing his first season of peewee football goes into cardiac arrest suddenly after practice.A10-year-old girl's heart stops beating just as she takes her long-awaited turn down a water park slide.A14-year-old student sitting in math class falls to the floor unresponsive.A16year-old high school basketball player collapses on the court after making the game-winning shot.

Sudden cardiac arrest is rare in young people, but it can happen. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about 2,000 young, seemingly healthy people under age 25 in the United States die each year of sudden cardiac arrest. These deaths leave behind a huge and devastating impact on families and communities. But there are ways to help identify risk factors that can help prevent these tragedies. Read on.

What is sudden cardiac arrest?

Sudden CardiacArrest (SCA) is a life-threatening emergency that happens from an "abrupt and unexpected loss of heart function leading to loss of consciousness and collapse." SCAcan be fatal if not treated within minutes. Survival outside a hospital depends on people nearby calling 911, along with prompt bystander emergency response such as using CPR and automatic defibrillators.

Are there warning signs for sudden cardiac arrest before it happens?

When SCAhappens to seemingly healthy young people, there is usually no obvious injury or medical reasons the patient or family knew about. Some young people who suffer SCAmay have previously experienced heartrelated symptoms, such as shortness of breath, chest pain or fainting, that weren't thought to be anything life-threatening. Others never had any symptoms of heart problems until the SCA event.

When can sudden cardiac death happen to young people?

Sudden cardiac arrest is thought to be a leading cause of death in young athletes, but it also affects young people not involved in organized sports. It can happen during exercise or at rest, or even during sleep. In some cases, young people can die from sudden cardiac arrest days or weeks later from brain damage that happened during the SCA.

What causes sudden cardiac

arrest in young people? Not all causes of sudden cardiac arrest in children and young adults is known, but may include: Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy Usually inherited and often undiagnosed, this is the most common cardiovascular cause of SCAin young people. Muscle cells in the heart's lower chambers, called ventricles, thicken. This can cause abnormal heart rhythm, especially during exercise. Other types of pediatric cardiomyopathy may also play a role.

Coronary artery abnormalities. Defects in the way the coronary arteries connect to the heart can lead to decreased blood supply to heart muscle during exercise and cause cardiac arrest.Young people with coronary artery abnormalities usually are born with them but may not notice any symptoms until they are older

Primary arrhythmias. In people with structurally normal hearts, sudden cardiac arrest can sometimes be caused by undiagnosed genetic conditions that affect the heart's electrical impulses. For example, these include:

Long QTsyndrome.Aheart rhythm condition that can cause fast and chaotic heart rhythm.

Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome. An extra electrical pathway in the heart creates a detour that can make it pump very fast.

Arrhythmogenic right ventricular dysplasia (ARVD). With this inherited condition, some of the heart's muscle tissue gets replaced with scar tissue.

Myocarditis. Usually triggered by an infection, myocarditis means the walls of the heart are inflamed. Most myocarditis cases in children happen when a virus such as an enterovirus gets into the heart. It can also be caused by bacterial, fungal or parasite infections, and allergic reactions to some medications.

Marfan syndrome. This connective tissue disease can lead to tears in the heart's aortic blood vessel. People born with the condition, who tend to be tall and have long arms, may not realize they have it.

Commotio Cordis is caused by a blow to the chest directly over the heart at certain points in the heartbeat cycle. It can happen in kids with completely normal hearts. Commotio cordis is more common in sports with projective objects such as baseball, ice

hockey and lacrosse. Are there ways to elp prevent sudden cardiac death? There are steps families and communities can take to lower their risk of sudden cardiac death in young people:

Regular well-child visits and sports physicals. All children need regular wellness visits with their doctor These visits are a chance to get a complete physical exam and detailed health history to help identify risk factors that may contribute to SCA. Preparticipation exams also are important, even if a child is not involved in organized sports because gym class and recreational activities can―and should―involve plenty of exercise!Ascreening form that can be completed anytime by patients and parents with their doctor, to help decide whether a visit with a specialist is needed.

KnowYour Family History. Gather the heart health history of blood relatives (children, siblings, parents, aunts and uncles, nieces and nephews, grandparents and cousins), and share with your pediatrician. This can help guide questions during well-child checkups and sports physicals.

Community Life SupportTraining andAutomated External Defibrillators.TheAAPsupports age-appropriate life-support training, including CPR, for students and school staff. It also encourages havingAutomated External Defibrillators (AEDs) near athletic and training facilities. In cases of sudden cardiac arrest, AEDs can quickly deliver an electrical shock to return the heart rhythm to normal.

Risk factors for sudden cardiac death that should prompt additional testing: Family history of unexpected or unexplained sudden death in an otherwise healthy family member under age 50.

Afamily member with an inherited heart muscle or electrical problem Chest pain during exercis An abnormal heart rate or rhythm

with an unknown cause

Fainting/passing out or seizure without warning or during exercise

Being born with a congenital heart defect (including those surgically repaired)

Should all young people be screened for sudden cardiac arrest risk?

Performing mass screening tests like electrocardiogram (EKG) and echocardiogram (ultrasound of heart) for all young people or in athletes to identify risk factors for sudden death is not currently recommended. The concern is that high false positive test results can cause unnecessary anxiety and additional testing. Also, not all events can be picked up by these tests.

However, recognizing warnings signs and risk factors, accurate medical history-taking, and cardiology and genetic screening for patients at higher risk because of family members with concerning heart conditions or an SCA, can be very effective ways to help reduce the risk of sudden death.

What's the outlook on sudden cardiac arrest statistics in the young?

There is a lack of reliable information about the incidence and cause of sudden cardiac death in young people. However, the CDC recently established a Sudden Death in theYoung Case Registry for babies, children and young adults up to age 20.The goal of this registry is to help create a better understanding of how often and why SCAhappens in young people—and how to help prevent it.

Remember

Although sudden cardiac death in young people isn't common, even one life lost is too many Take steps that can help reduce the risk of these tragedies, such as scheduling regular well-child visits, sports physicals and encouraging CPR andAED training in your community. -

Tswalu, in the southernmost section of the Kalahari Desert, is SouthAfrica's largest and most exclusive private game reserve.

Although much of the emphasis atTswalu is on luxury and opulence - it's owned and frequently used by the Oppenheimer family - it's also become a conservation labour of love.

Tswalu was once an overgrazed hunting concession in the middle of the Northern Cape. But when owner Stephen Boler died en route to the reserve in 1999, the Oppenheimers were given the first option to buy the land, which they did.

Key to their decision to purchase the land was their vision of returning it to its original, unspoilt state, hence the nameTswalu, meaning "new beginning" or "rebirth" in Setswana.

It's a process that's been complex and costly. In 2021, they spent roughly R100 million on nature and surrounding communities, and much of the work takes place behind the scenes to paying guests.

Although conservation forms the core focus for much of the Tswalu team, this isn't the emphasis for paying guests unless they request it to be.

Instead, paying guests have near-exclusive access to the 114,000 hectares of land by virtue of a private guide, vehicle, and tracker

Although the size of the land means teams work hard for sightings,Tswalu's activities, hospitality, and various luxuries make it one of SouthAfrica's most unique private lodge

stays.

Here's what to expect from a stay atTswalu Kalahari.

Most guests who travel to Tswalu do so via a private jet operated by the Oppenheimers' Fireblade Aviation.

The journey to the remote corner of the Kalahari takes two hours from CapeTown and 90 minutes from Johannesburg.Arrival isn't on a dusty, isolated airstrip, either

Tswalu has a 2,030 metre tarred airstrip and a large thatched arrivals boma with open sides, beautifully commandeered by a flock of sociable weavers.

Each party's private guide and tracker are immediately on hand to drive guests to their lodge, a short journey that's instantly scenic.

The airstrip is a short, scenic drive from the two main camps,Tarkuni and Motse. Tarkuni is an exclusive-use villa that guests must book out in its entirety. It accommodates ten guests in five lavish rooms under a single thatched roof. Each room has a private deck and en-suite bathrooms - but for socialising, there are multiple common areas like a pool, wine cellar, library, games room, and lounge.A private team of chefs and butlers cater for the group, and guests can choose to dine indoors or under the stars in the outdoor boma.

The Motse is a more typical safari camp that focuses on individuals and couples. It has a communal infinity pool, boma, and indoor and outdoor dining areas. The lodge sleeps 18 guests in nine high-roofed thatched suites. Bedrooms

feature four-poster beds set beneath maps of the property and large windows open to the views and elements outside.

There are multiple seating areas, with most of the focus on an outdoor patio with highbacked chairs, sofas, and a round table perfect for games or private dining.

And thanks to a nearby waterhole, it's possible to get occasional views of passing wildlife from the comfort of your suite.

Food atTswalu receives special attention. All food and a wide selection of premium alcohol are included in your stay

And on at least one occasion, you'll likely receive an invitation to dine outdoors or on a scenic dune, which will probably feature multiple courses beneath the starsandTswalu's car bar of dreams.

Mornings and evenings at Tswalu are mostly about game drives. The reserve is home to unique desert-dwelling creatures like aardvark, porcupines, brown hyena, and pangolins - though these are unsurprisingly elusive. Guides will likely offer you various possibilities - including the sighting of rare black-maned Kalahari lions. Lions are in a separate section of the reserve.Although they don't exist in large prides as they do elsewhere inAfrica, sightings of both males and females are common, including mating pairs.

The reserve has also reintroduced cheetah. And several elusive rhinos, both black and white, that will make you work hard for often brief but exciting sightings. There's also plenty of general game uncommon in SouthAfrica's more familiar parks, like roan and sable antelope and gemsbok.

But the biggest wildlife highlight for most visitors is Tswalu's habituated meerkats.

Much of the beauty ofTswalu lies in the scenic attractions, however. Like growing thunderclouds behind the Korranaberg Mountains.

And the long, ochre sand roads that cut across the dunes, which after good seasonal rains are often the only reminder that you're actually in true desert.

Given that there are no lions in one half of the reserve, it's also possible to safely participate in various activities like guided walks, nights out alone under the stars, or horse riding that caters to all levels.

But for many, a visit to Klein Jan, located on theTswalu property, is a key reason to visit.

The restaurant offers a culinary journey from the stoep of a 100-year-old farmhouse, to a secret underground cellar and dining room.SouthAfrican Michelin-star chef Jan Hendrik van der Westhuizen has curated a menu that draws on hyperlocal ingredients, many of which are found on theTswalu property

The Klein Jan experience typically falls on the last night of a trip toTswalu, and is the perfect parallel universe in which to reflect on a journey to this remote corner of the Kalahari.

In all, if wildlife sightings are your main goal you'll likely work hard atTswalu given its size and low density of vehicles. And for this reason, it's worth slowing down and appreciating other aspects of the experience. For international travellers, it's also a lodge that pairs well with those in other reserves like the Kruger National Park or Sabi Sands.

ButTswalu is a destination best celebrated slowly for its stark scenic beauty, unique species, world-class food and hospitality, and some of South Africa's most impressive conservation goals and management.

Despite the high cost of a stay atTswalu, it has an exceedingly high occupancy rate. It's possible to check availability and book online directly on theTswalu website. The reserve also offers discounts for stays of four nights or longer. - Andrew Thompson was a guest of Tswalu.
