A Traveller’s Guide To The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park A speckle in the 900 000km² Kalahari landscape, is shared between South Africa and Botswana, and the fences between the two countries have been dropped for the benefit of animals – and visitors, too. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is a good introduction to the Kalahari’s desert sandscapes, as much for families as for pensioners, because the accommodation options cater for absolutely everybody. Once addicted, the dunes, the dry riverbeds, the camelthorns, the

sociable weavers’ nests, the emblematic gemsbok and kori bustards and meerkat and, yes, the magnificent lions, keep a tight hold on your heartstrings, whether you’re young or old. Sightings in the park are often your own. Despite the fact that the camps are always fully booked these days, no matter what time of year you go, you still find your own space on game drives. Sometimes there may be a small throng of vehicles, but mostly the only clues are left by tyre tracks in the sand. - GETAWAY

TNPA Initiates Process For Possible Development Of Greenfield Boegoebaai Port South Africa’s Transnet National Ports Authority (TNPA) has initiated a preliminary process for the proposed development of a new deep-water port at Boegoebaai in the far Northern Cape near the Namibian border, which has been earmarked as a possible hub for the production and export of green hydrogen and derivative products.

Logistics: The Weak Link In SA’s Raisin Industry Ideal climatic conditions and access to irrigation have helped to propel South Africa’s raisin industry to ever-greater heights. But deficient logistics infrastructure and a lack of processing capacity are hampering further expansion, says Pieter Botha, Nedbank Business Banking’s area client manager for the Northern Cape. Raisin production contributes R2 billion annually and about 30 000 jobs to South Africa’s economy, making it a relatively small industry in the country. Nonetheless, it is a growing one. South Africa is the world’s fifthlargest producer after Turkey and currently produces 6% of the world’s raisins, but production has almost doubled since the 2006/07 season, with particularly strong growth over the past five years. Are raisins another success story for South African agriculture? There are approximately 1 100 raisin producers and seven major raisin processors and packers in the country. Production is concentrated along the Orange River in the Northern Cape, accounting for at least 90% of South Africa’s total annual raisin output, with the Olifants River region in the Western Cape making up the remaining 10%. Raisin production is prolific in the Northern Cape because of the province’s year-round availability of irrigation water from the Orange River and its relatively stable hot and dry climate, making it ideal for growing and sun-drying grapes. Sun-drying is the most common method used in South Africa, as it is quicker and more cost-effective. Logistics upgrade needed Raisins South Africa’s (Raisins SA) revised forecast for the 2021/22 season is 65 000t of marketable product, but annual yields are expected to increase to 100 000t by 2025 due to new plantings and the replacement of vineyards that were started in 2014. At about the same time (eight years ago), the Northern Cape provincial government, in partnership with Raisins SA, launched a 200ha development

in Eksteenskuil in the Orange River region to support the growth of small-sector farmers. As a result, these producers’ volumes have grown from 800t to more than 2 000t per annum, and growers’ annual earnings have increased from R15 million to R45 million since the 2013/14 growing season. However, the major raisin processors and packers currently have an annual capacity of 90 000t to 100 000t, so expansion of existing facilities or the development of new ones is urgently required. This is particularly so given the growth in raisin production and the fact Act, which make them competitively priced. that some processors are already approaching full Another plus for South African capacity. producers is that they are becoming accredited by SAIn addition, there is increasing GAP, an offshoot of the concern about the substantial impact that South Africa’s failing GlobalGAP certification, which requires high product quality, logistics infrastructure could have on all exports. In the World traceability, chemical controls and consistency of supply, and Bank and IHS Markit’s report puts the country in good standing titled ‘A comparable assessment in international markets. of container port performance’, South African producer prices for South Africa’s ports of Cape raisins are sensitive to supply Town, Gqeberha, Durban and and demand factors, and the Coega were at the bottom of 351 foreign exchange rate. ports in various countries. 000t of raisins, or 1,6% of total global raisin production, annually, so the direct trade threat is expected to be limited, particularly as Russia represents less than 0,2% of South Africa’s total raisin exports. However, the indirect impact is likely to be more substantial through the rising costs of inputs such as fuel and fertiliser. Market uncertainty may also see the strengthening of the US dollar, which would provide a benefit over the short term, as raisins are traded in the same currency. However, this would be offset against higher inflationary pressure over the medium term, as many inputs are imported. Weighing up the naturally favourable environment that South Africa offers this crop, and the fact that rising input costs and global supply chain disruptions are likely to be temporary, we believe that the local raisin industry has the potential to grow considerably and could expand from its current position of largest raisin producer in the Southern Hemisphere to one of the top three in the world. However, it is vital to address areas that need improvement and engage with key logistics and infrastructure role players and government to find solutions. The views expressed in our weekly opinion piece do not necessarily reflect those of Farmer’s Weekly. This is an edited excerpt from an article originally published on Nedbank’s website.

Probeer self en laat weet my. Kompleksiteit: Tess Gerritsen is ‘n mediese dokter. Hy was egter ‘n uitmuntende skrywer!) Nee. Gaan doen jou navorsing. Lekker skryf!

Nothing changed in Hondeklipbaai. Our fathers and brothers continued to eke out a smallscale fishery living, but at that time it was illegal to sell your fish so there was little income. De Beers diamond mining continued until, in 2008, De Beers left, leaving a legacy of dust and dumps. The company that bought their mining licence, West Coast Resources, also bought the responsibility to rehabilitate the surrounding biodiversity after more than 30 years of De Beers destruction, and they promised us an internet café and 500 jobs. When they went under in 2018 and filed for insolvency, all they had done was create 200 jobs and we still did not have an internet café and nothing was rehabilitated. To this day your department has failed to ensure that the surrounding mining areas are rehabilitated. Furthermore, in 2016, when this company applied to expand the diamond mining to include the building of cofferdam mines along our coast where our crayfish and fish breed, we informed the consultants that they had already started mining the beaches even before they were granted the environmental authorisation. Our comments were submitted for your department to read. Even the Specialist Biodiversity Report commented that cofferdam mining had already destroyed coastal biodiversity, but this company was still granted approval. It was around this time that many of us started going into the abandoned mines and sieving through the hard gravel in the hope of finding a diamond.

veld and risk our lives in unsafe abandoned mines to survive. In 2012, when the Fisheries Branch of the then Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries’ (DAFF) Small-scale Fisheries Policy was gazetted, we became excited that our right to fish or harvest intertidal resources and make a modest livelihood would be recognised. In 2016, we all applied for smallscale fishing rights. Yet your Department of Fisheries said that we women were not small-scale fishers, despite the definition of small-scale fishing including the often-invisible work that women do up and down the value chain. Only two women who had political connections were successful, yet these two women have identical histories to all of ours. We tried desperately to complain and appeal, but our voices have fallen on deaf ears. We now still harvest limpets and mussels, some of us illegally, to feed our families when fishing is poor and food is scarce. In January 2020 you came to Port Nolloth harbour. We travelled to Port Nolloth (over two hours) to meet with you. We explained to you that we had been excluded from the smallscale fishing cooperatives. You said that we should form an organisation and apply for commercial fishing rights, under the policy known as Frap, the Fishing Rights Allocation Policy. We waited two years for this Frap, which was delayed, but in the meantime, registered our cooperative. The DFFE Fisheries Branch invited applications for all the commercial fisheries species. We applied for various species, spending collectively R11,000 on our applications, only to be told by your DFFE Fisheries Branch that we do not meet the criteria and in most instances, the authority you delegated decided not to take new entrants to these fisheries sectors anyway.

Why did you fob us off on Frap when it was clearly not going to be possible for a group of inexperienced women like ourselves with no infrastructure and no capital to be successful? To this day most of our families What were you thinking that day have members, including on the harbour in Port Nolloth Continues on pg 13 women, who go regularly into the

Bladsy 13

Vrydag 12 Augustus 2022 Continues from pg 13 when you suggested this? We listened to you! In the past two years since you last met with us we have been assaulted by four oil and gas offshore exploration applications – Tosaco, Searcher, Azinam and now Searcher again. The Azinam oil and gas company’s owners were here the other day – they promised us an internet café and to paint the school. We hear that they have been bought by a Canadian company called EcoAtlantic and an oil rig is on its way to start drilling 20km off our coastline in four weeks’ time. Searcher failed to consider the impact of its proposed seismic surveys on us, the small-scale fisher communities, and on the species that we now depend on for basic food security, but despite a high court order we hear that it’s now back again with another exploration application. In addition to these offshore oil and gas exploration applications, there is a gas production right already authorised and a planned undersea gas pipeline in the pipeline from Ibhubesi Gas Fields in our waters. And then, of course, there is the offshore drilling right that De Beers has secured for diamonds, in addition to the coastal and surf zone and beach mining that has also been approved right along the entire strip of coast, even on either side of the Namaqua Marine Protected Area (MPA). Did you know that recreational fishers are allowed to fish in the MPA but our small-scale fishers are not? Yes, that’s your department’s regulations! Please see this map below with all the current mining exploration and production activities surrounding our town completely. Together with many nongovernmental organisations, researchers and academics, we have begged you to provide oversight on what is happening along our coast and in our waters by doing proper strategic environmental assessments and by taking your responsibility to protect the marine ecosystem (Marine Living Resources Act of 1998 places this in your hands). Instead we find that the proposed ocean legislation was dropped, and you have failed to implement the Marine Spatial Planning (MSP) Act of 2018 timeously. In fact, not at all. We note that the MSP document that your

You have not protected our rights as women living in remote rural coastal areas as vulnerable, marginalised groups. Imagine if you encouraged the large fishing companies like Oceana to address the past injustices that they perpetrated on us as women workers? Or ensured that your fisheries department investigated how we came to be excluded from the small-scale sector cooperatives by your fisheries department? Imagine if you could return the R11,000 we spent on Frap applications and apologised to us for inadvertently encouraging us to apply for industrial fishing rights that we were never going to be able to get? Imagine if you ensured coordinated, cooperative governance of the ocean and coastal space, and instead of contradictory climate change policies you provided governance oversight that ensured our right to a healthy, safe environment, to clean air and water, instead of that polluted water from mining run-off and threatened ecosystems. Minister Creecy, we as women from coastal, small-scale fishing communities have lived closely next to our ocean all our lives. Many of our husbands, fathers and brothers have died on this ocean. We know that every breath we take relies on oxygen from this ocean. We see the ocean as sacred. It is part of us. Please stop forcing us to seek alternative livelihoods down dusty, abandoned diamond mines. Please start overseeing the marine spatial planning of the ocean and coastal areas so that they are not destroyed by mining and that our livelihoods as smallscale fishing communities can flourish and contribute food to our region. We plead with you to meet with us at your earliest convenience; we would like to show you Hondeklipbaai and host you here. The regional expo, which saw 78 pupils showcasing their projects, was one of 35 in-person regional expos that were held across the country – the first Eskom expo physical science fair that was held since 2019 due to the Covid-19 pandemic. And He said to me, "Go in, and see the wicked abominations which they are doing there." So I went in and saw, and there - every sort of creeping thing, abominable beasts, and all the idols of the house of Israel, portrayed all around on the walls. And there stood before them seventy men of the elders of the house of Israel, and in their midst stood Jaazaniah the son of Shaphan. Each man had a censer in his hand, and a thick cloud of incense went up. Then He said to me, "Son of man, have you seen what the elders of the house of Israel do in the dark, every man in the room of his idols? For they say, 'The Lord does not see us, the Lord has forsaken the land.'" (Ez 8:9-12). These evil people believed they could get away with it because the Lord does not see! How true is this today? How many

governments and corporations are undertaking unethical deals right now? They think it is hidden. Therefore, do not fear them. For there is nothing covered that will not be revealed, and hidden that will not be known (Mat 10:26). Dink net : "In an era without cell phones or "Facebook" they relied on "Unlimited Vision" and cardio-gnosis to stay connected. They knew what was going on". (If Columba's seventh-century biographer Adomnán is to be believed, the saint was a prolific worker of miracles, raising the dead, calming wind and storm) St Columba met a man at a guest house. Immediately, he saw where the man was from, and saw key events taking place with his family back home. When the Saint saw him, he said: "Where do you live?"

"In Cruach Rannoch near the shore of the loch." "That district you name," said the Saint, "is where savage marauders are now plundering." The poor layman, hearing this, began to grieve for his wife and children, but the saint comforted him in his sorrow, saying: "Go, dear fellow, go. Your whole family has fled up the mountainside and escaped, though the cruel raiders have driven away with them your little herd, and have taken as booty the furniture of your house." When the layman returned to his own district, he found that everything he had heard the saint say was fulfilled. Jesus lived free from human

limitations and could see beyond his natural eyes. Jesus saw Nathanael coming toward Him, and said of him, "Behold, an Israelite indeed, in whom is no deceit!" Nathanael said to Him, "How do You know me?" Jesus answered and said to him, "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." (John 1:47). Het dit al met jou gebeur? Moenie verbaas staan dat hierdie tipe Kainos handelinge reeds in jou geesmens werksaam is nie. Searcher Seismic Set To Return To South Africa Geoscience data company, Searcher Seismic, has applied for authorization to continue its planned 3D seismic survey offshore South African in search of oil following local opposition and the temporary discontinuation of offshore seismic activity by South Africa’s Western Cape High Court. On July 13, the company issued an application for a new reconnaissance permit, with the notice inviting affected parties to participate in the environmental authorization application process. Searcher Seismic appointed environmental consulting company, Environmental Impact Management Services, to assist with the authorization, which will include public consultation. According to the company’s application, the survey will be conducted in waters 256km offshore Saint Helena Bay in South Africa’s Western Cape Province, to 220km offshore Hondeklip Bay, a coastal village in the country’s Northern Cape Province, encompassing an area of approximately 30,000km2,

which includes the Northern Cape Ultra Deep License Area and various petroleum license blocks. Pending approval, the seismic shoot is expected for the first quarter of 2023 and will last approximately 217 days. Working in collaboration with oil and gas exploration management firm, the Petroleum Agency of South Africa, Searcher Seismic has released a multi-client 2D and 3D seismic dataset covering the Outeniqua Basin complex offshore South Africa, as well as its Bredasdorp, Infanta, Pletmos, Gamtoos, Algoa and Southern Outeniqua sub-basins, with the survey currently standing at approximately 110,000km in 2D and 15,000km2 in 3D seismic data. Providing high-quality exploration data to global exploration, production and mining companies, Searcher Seismic’s 2D and 3D data library features basin modeling, isopach mapping and play fairway building, facilitating the investigation of the distribution of plays and traps in South African waters, models that are suitable for preliminary

exploration analysis. Featuring the company’s proprietary post-stack preprocessing method used to rectify navigation, metadata, amplitude, phase, and time, Searcher Seismic’s database is primed for any interpretation software and is available on its ondemand web-portal, sAIsmic,

offering instant access to explorers. The return of Searcher Seismic to South Africa comes at a time when the country is looking at ramping up exploration and production across the oil and gas sector, citing both resources as key solutions to mitigate load shedding and address the country’s ongoing energy crisis.

Government Funds Northern Cape NGOs referred by clinics and hospitals. Zulu was asked to provide the information of NGOs funded by the department, by the DA Member in the National Assembly, Gizella Opperman.

Over 200 non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the Northern Cape are funded by the National Department of Social Development. The information - which included the reasons why these NGOs are funded by the department - was made known by Minister Lindiwe Zulu. Some of the reasons includes that most of the NGOs support households which have no income, while some NGOs support child-headed households; and households with learners benefiting from

the school feeding scheme. Zulu’s reply further details that each of the NGOs services food insecure people in the community where they are located. The criteria that the 213 NGOs funded by the department use in order to support people, includes chronically food insecure households that experience hunger and have no access to one balanced meal per day; households with unemployed people living with HIV/AIDS and other chronic diseases, and households with malnourished individuals

Group Shares in Small Business's Vision

to Create Jobs in Tsantsabane Over the past 18 years, Edward Smit has made his mark as a journalist and published author, provincially and even on international media and news platforms. Smit left the teaching profession in 2020 after 20 years of service to fulfill his vision: to start his own media company and to create employment for local young people who share his passion. Horison Media emerged in 2020 as a digital and online news platform. After only 4 months of the establishment of Horison Media, this small business got its first investment in the form of office furniture for 4 offices. Two years later, Horison Media was included in a local mining group's development program and recently the Harambee Social Justice Project , a non-profit company also bought into this former teacher's vision to make a sustainable impact in Tsantsabane. Barney Andrews, involved at Harambee says: ” The Harambee Social Justice Project was founded out of the need to address past and present socio-economic challenges and continuous violations of the basic human rights, in particular that of previously disadvantaged and impoverished communities.” “Our vision is to assist in alleviating these social and economic disparities by meaningfully engaging and forming community-based publicprivate partnerships across all social and economic sectors to bring about measurable relief that is monitored and evaluated.” Harambee identified Horison Media in Tsantsabane in partnership with the Tsantsabane local municipality to create employment for the youth of Tsantsabane and to give effect to the vision of Smit, the founder of Horison Media and the co-owner of NoordKaap Media, the Holding company for Horison Media and Kathu Gazette. "I am sincerely grateful to Harambee for buying into my vision after more than 40 unsuccessful applications to various local mines that are nowhere involved in local economic development. Our residents are used to the absence of more than 90% of local mines when it comes to the development of small businesses and

local economic development programs as per their social labor plans and compliance. Horison Media is looking forward to a longterm relationship with Harambee and also to further develop the three young people to get their businesses off the ground," says Smit With the support of the Harambee Social Justice Project Horison Media recently appointed Leanice Adams as an administrator who studied Community Development and was unemployed in Tsantsabane. Vuruscha Shearer is a 2nd-year student at UNISA studying towards her degree in Communication Science and joined Horison Media as a community journalist. Mercia van Vuuren qualified as a graphic designer and completed her internship at Media 24. Mercia joined Horison Media as a graphic designer already in 2020 on a part time basis and now full-time on board. These interns will receive a monthly stipend from Harambee and will have the opportunity to also run their youth female-owned companies under the guidance of Horison Media and Harambee. Various media partners will also be part of this youth development program to develop the interns to run their own business. The mayor for Tsantsabane, Helena English says: "We place a high premium on the development of our residents and especially our young people. My office, the municipal manager, and the entire elected council welcome the role of Harambee in the development of a local small business and especially 3 local young people in Tsantsabane. This investment is in line with the President's vision that young people must be developed as entrepreneurs to establish their businesses and create job opportunities. This investment from Harambee is the responsibility of all the mines in Tsantsabane to become intensely involved in sustainable economic development."

‘We will always remember you Terry Grove’ -Deur David Magerman, Komaggas Ek het hierdie skrywe Moedersdag aan juf Terry Grove gerig. We will always remember you Terry Grove. Jy was 'n lieflike mens. Jy het so baie mense se lewens positief beïnvloed. Juf Grove you were always light in the darkness. We will dearly missed you... Moedersdag 2022... Op hierdie Moedersdag wil ek graag iemand wie ek so baie bewonder, spesiaal bedank. Juf Grove is 'n mense mens. Terry Grove is 'n regte aktivis.

Juf Terry Grove gelukkige moedersdag. Ons is so baie lief vir jou. Mag die Here jou ryklik seën. Mag Hy jou voetstappe rig. Rest in perfect peace...
