Friday 15 March Spring Term
Head of Prep School’s message
After much anticipation and a couple of reschedules, we were thrilled that the Donkin Cup Cross Country Running event was finally able to take place this morning, with the sun even making a brief but welcome appearance.
As our community gathered for this exciting event, we should recognise the valuable lessons that events such as this can teach us. Patience has been key with regards to the Donkin Cup this year, with one particularly eager group of Year 3 boys routinely asking at least once a month when the Donkin Cup is finally going to happen? As I keep reminding them - good things come to those who wait. Through the reschedules and uncertainty, the boys have shown remarkable patience and resilience, traits that will serve them well both on and off the course.
Running isn't just about speed or distance; and it is not for everyone. It is about setting our standards high, having ambition regardless of baseline, pushing through our comfort zones and discovering the strength within ourselves. Each runner brings their unique strengths and challenges to the course; some love the mud, others hate it, some start tentatively and build their confidence, others start fast and run out of steam. Regardless, the compassion and encouragement demonstrated by the supporters this morning, truly showcases the wonderful spirit of our school community and I have never felt prouder of our students than watching them grit their teeth, head down, powering through the final 100 metres. A brilliant way to end the week.
However, the lessons of ambition, resilience, patience, and pushing through the comfort zone extend beyond the Donkin Cup. They are qualities that benefit all areas of learning, whether it's tackling a challenging math problem, mastering a new language, or delving into the complexities of history. It's through these, often uncomfortable experiences, that we need to show courage, and as a result we grow the most both academically and personally.

Tupperware for Grab and Go GUIDANCE FOR PARENTS
As part of our ongoing efforts to become more environmentally friendly, we are encouraging students to bring their own Tupperware containers for sandwiches. By using reusable containers instead of single-use plastic bags or cling wrap, we can significantly reduce the amount of waste generated during lunchtime. Therefore, we kindly request your support in this endeavour. We encourage you to provide your child with a suitable Tupperware container should they wish to choose a sandwich from the Bates dining room Grab and Go section. Thank you for your continued support.
