Habs Weekly Junior School edition

Friday 7 July End of Summer Term

Junior School’s Message

As we reach the end of another remarkable academic year in the Junior School, for our year 6 pupils, this marks not only the conclusion of a successful school year but also a significant milestone in their educational journey.

Education is a voyage of discovery, growth and transformation. From each pupil’s first hesitant steps when they joined the school to the confident strides our year 6 students are about to take as they move forward, this growth has been inspiring to witness: the assurance with which the whole year group delivered their leavers’ assembly on Monday was a testament to this.

This journey is not about academic achievement alone, far from it. It is also about personal growth, character development and the values that shape us as individuals. Year 6, as you move forward beyond the Junior School, carry with you the school values of ambition, curiosity and courage that you have cultivated within our school community. Embrace opportunities to contribute to your new communities, build strong relationships and have a positive impact on those around you. Welcome challenges, take risks, and never be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.

There are several members of our Junior School community moving on to new schools at the end of this term. We wish you all well, secure in the knowledge that you will take with you the qualities and strengths that you have been nurturing and growing during your time in the Junior School.

This week, we also say goodbye to some staff: Mrs Liddelow, Ms Bry and Miss Rees, each moving on to new opportunities. They all go with our best wishes for successful and fulfilling next steps in their journeys.

Mrs Liddelow has led the Junior School P.E. Department for 12 years, developing the curriculum and sharing an infectious love of sport and physical activity with so many students, which for many will have a lifelong impact.

Thanks must also go to you, the parent body; your support, encouragement and partnership are hugely valued by the staff team and has a significant and positive impact on your child’s education.

Lastly, may I take this opportunity to wish everyone in our Junior School community a restful and refreshing summer break. I hope you find some time to slow down, unwind and enjoy spending time with family and friends.

Tooled Up

INFORMATION

As the long summer break approaches, you may be beginning to consider how to make the most of this precious time to enhance your children's learning through fun educational activities. Whether it's exploring nature in local parks, visiting museums and galleries, or engaging in hands-on science experiments at home, there are countless opportunities to spark curiosity and ignite a passion for learning.

Encourage reading by setting aside time each day for your child to get lost in the pages of a good book. Maths can be made exciting by incorporating it into daily activities such as baking or measuring ingredients while cooking together. At Habs, we profoundly believe that learning doesn't have to be confined to the classroom; it can happen anywhere and everywhere, including during the holidays! For those parents looking for further ideas, as well as advice on how to approach conversations about the return to school in September, the below Tooled Up links are a great resource.

Habs Choristers Auditions

Habs Choristers is an auditioned choir that sings three services a year outside of school, as well as at school events. Potential choristers do not need to be taking voice lessons and, although being able to read musical notation would be an advantage, it is not a requirement – the choir is open to all who enjoy singing to a high standard.

This year the Habs Choristers has performed at Barnet Church and St Alban’s Cathedral and on Saturday 24 June, sang Evensong at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. For our services outside of school, the group is joined by professional musicians and in Cambridge, they were joined by choral scholars from St John’s College.

ACE Focus

Once again, the ACE programme has been rich and varied and pupils in Years 1 to 6 have embraced many new opportunities and further developed their skills and passions. More pupils than ever before have taken part in the wraparound ACE opportunities and there have been some exciting additions both at lunchtime and after school.

Music and Performance - Chamber Strings

Chamber Strings is a fantastic group of super enthusiastic young string players who meet on Wednesdays after school. Open to anyone approaching grade 1 standard to those who play at a much higher level, Chamber Strings allows those with less experience to learn from those with more. The results are impressive and there are lots of performance opportunities throughout the year. Listen out for us in assemblies, Merry Music, Performing Arts Evening and the Summer Concert.

“Chamber Strings is the best ensemble ever!!! It’s great!!!” -

Emily (4 Aleph)

Create and Construct – Observational Drawing

In Observational Drawing, pupils develop their artistic skills, studying a range of subjects, often with a nature theme. Often taking advantage of the outside spaces, the observational artists focus on capturing details in their pictures and considering things from different perspectives. Time always flies during these lunchtimes!

“I really like drawing and thought it would be fun to draw real things rather than cartoons. I loved looking at plants really close up” - Diya (4 Aesc)

“Our club is calming and it’s amazing to see how your drawing improves” - Saffia (4 Aleph)

Sport - Bollywood Dancing

Each week Year 2 have been enjoying Bollywood dancing and over recent weeks have perfected different moves and steps involving a fast paced full body workout. They have been enjoying grooving to some energetic and upbeat Bollywood music. Some of the pupils were totally new to Bollywood dancing and picked up the moves and steps quickly, through working with friends who had more experience. All of the elements were combined into a dance routine set to the peppy music where the mind and body where engaged at all times.

“The music interesting and the moves are easy to remember” - Romi (2 Alpha)

“I like that the music and moves are bouncy” - Khyati (2 Alpha)

Think and Speak – STEM

STEM club has been lots of fun this term. We have chosen a different theme from STEM each week to explore and had lots of giggles engineering 3D spaghetti structures with the help of some marshmallows, bouncing eggs and programming with Scrat from Ice Age.

“I've had great fun at STEM club. I loved doing the experiments with the eggs” - Matilda (1 Purple)

“STEM club is really fun - I like coding the best” - Eena (1 Purple)

Years 5 and 6 Debating

Year 1 have been using traditional playground equipment to create their own games! They have used hula-hoops to make a hopscotch, span them around our arms and even learnt a magic trick which requires throwing the hoop and having it return to you!

“I liked playing with the hula-hoops because we learnt magic" - Amani (1 Green)

Rainbow Blue Class Assembly

What an amazing first Habs assembly for Rainbow Blue! The air was filled with excitement and joy as the children shared their information all about fruit and vegetables. Their dance was wonderfully co-ordinated by the children themselves and the singing was infectious. Well done to all children in Rainbow Blue, we are so proud of you.

Rainbow Red Class Assembly

Rainbow Red really enjoyed performing their class assembly. They loved learning the Musical Dots songs and had lots of fun exploring different instruments and the ways in which they can be played. The Musical Dots workshop was a wonderful collaborative learning experience for Rainbow and we were proud to share our learning with the Junior School.

Thank you for coming to watch.

Habs Choristers Evensong

On Saturday 24 June Habs Choristers sang Choral Evensong in the chapel of Corpus Christi College, Cambridge. Habs Choristers is an auditioned choir that meets twice a week, and the evensong was their third performance of the year, following a service of Nine Lessons and Carols in December and Choral Evensong in March, both held at St John the Baptist Church, Chipping Barnet.

The choristers were privileged to be joined by choral scholars and the organ scholar of from St John’s College, which boasts one of the finest choirs in the world. The fact that the Junior School pupils were able to perform with such confidence and musicality is a testament to their hard work and dedication to rehearsal.

We were sad to say goodbye to our first graduating choristers – Mihika and Laila in Year 6. We thank them for their participation in Habs Choristers as inaugural members of this new Habs choir.

You can listen to the service here on SoundCloud.

5 Aleph Class Assembly

5 Aleph thoroughly enjoyed presenting their assembly on ‘Inspirational Women’. Each child chose a role model and told us all about them. Music (violins and flutes), poetry and a song (with drum accompaniment) completed the show.

Year 6 Leavers’ Assembly and Party

On Monday 3 July, we bade farewell to our wonderful Year 6 students in a touching and emotional Leavers' Assembly. This was followed by an afternoon filled with joy and celebration at their leavers' party. The assembly was a truly memorable event, featuring heartfelt and humorous memories shared by Kiera, Sanaa, Charlotte, Chloe Y (in 6 Aleph), and Amber, Gracie, Zoe, and Xiaocheng (in 6 Aesc). The students recollections of their time at Habs Girls were poignant and funny, reminding us of the special moments they have shared throughout the years.

The highlight of the assembly was a moving performance of Dr Seuss' beautiful poem, “The Places You'll Go ” . This powerful metaphor resonated deeply with everyone, capturing the endless possibilities and potential challenges that lie ahead for our incredible pupils. Ms Lansdown delivered an inspiring and uplifting speech, expressing her pride and best wishes for the departing students, which was followed by the handing out valedictories with Mrs Wright. The assembly concluded on a high note with an upbeat rendition of the song “ All in This Together" from the film "High School Musical ”. The energy and enthusiasm displayed by the Year 6 students was contagious, leaving everyone feeling buoyant and uplifted.

In the afternoon, Year 6 donned their most sparkly party outfits and made their way to the Performance Space, ready to let their hair down and dance to the latest pop songs. The atmosphere was electric as DJ Skittleman spun the tracks, filling the room with infectious rhythms. The Parents' Guild deserves immense credit for organizing such a memorable event, ensuring that the girls had a fantastic time. Plenty of refreshments and a photo booth added to the festivities, creating lasting memories for all in attendance.

Seeing the Year 6 students enjoy themselves so much was truly heartwarming. They exited the building in style, ready to embark on the next stage of their educational journeys. We cannot express enough gratitude for their hard work, dedication, and positive contributions to our school community. Year 6 have been a fantastic year group, and we wish them all the luck in the world as they move into the next chapter of their lives. We are immensely proud of each and every one of them.

Sports Day

Sports Day this year was divided into the three phases, and it was thoroughly enjoyed by all participants. However, due to the rain, the Foundation Phase had to run their races and cheer for their friends indoors in the Sports Hall. Despite the change in environment, the students demonstrated remarkable courage and resilience.

MIDDLE AND UPPER PHASE

In the afternoon, the Middle and Upper Phases events took place outdoors on the sports fields as the sun had decided to make an appearance.

Here is what the House Captains had to say about the afternoon’s events:

Puffins House Captains: We had an absolutely fantastic time on sports day! At the start, there was a great atmosphere; the sun was shining and children were wildly waving at their parents. Everyone was clearly enjoying themselves, even before the event had even started!

Seahorses House Captains: It was wonderful to see everyone so excited. We don’t get too many opportunities to show our athletics skills, so it was a great time to shine! Everyone was very community minded and cheered on the competitors of each event, both in our house and other houses.

Aardvarks House Captains: After all the events were over, we went over to the other side of the field to hear the results. It was extremely exciting. Overall, it was a brilliant day.

Chameleons House Captains: We feel like we all showed all of the school's values. For example, we demonstrated curiosity because we have tried and mastered new skills in preparation for Sports Day, courage, because we did single events in front of a big crowd and ambition because we tried our best and aimed high.

Finally, the results were announced, and the Aardvarks emerged as the overall winners of Sports Day 2023, winning by a mere two points. Congratulations to all the competitors for their exceptional performances, and a heartfelt thank you to all the families who were able to support us. We apologise to those who were unable to attend, and we sincerely appreciate your understanding and for bearing with us, as we had to make last minute changes due to the unpredictability of the British summer weather!

“A very fun and cheerful afternoon.” - Layla (5 Aesc)

“It was the best sports day EVER!” - Aurelia (4 Aesc)

“Supporting my friends on sports day is one of the best parts- whether they come first or last, it is taking part that counts.”

- Aurelia (4 Aesc)

Pupils from Year 2 and 3 took part in our first Performing Arts Spotlight on Wednesday 14 June. They entertained us wonderfully - from character dancing, to humorous monologues, to instrumental classics, they all performed to an incredibly high standard. Considering their young age, and the fact that this marked the first time many of the children have performed a solo at school, they should feel incredibly proud. Thank you to those parents and guardians who came to watch for your support and encouragement. We look forward to welcoming more of you to future Spotlights next academic year.

Trips

Year 6 PGL Liddington

Year 6 recently embarked on an unforgettable adventure at PGL Liddington, accompanied by their enthusiastic teachers, Mr Bloch, Mrs Tatman, Mrs Davies, Mrs Liddelow, and Miss Rees. Over the course of five action-packed days, both students and teachers alike had an absolute blast! One of the main highlights of the trip was witnessing the remarkable personal growth of the students. Throughout the week, they developed essential life skills such as independence, facing new challenges, and overcoming fears. Most importantly, they learned the value of resilience. It was heartwarming to see the children push themselves beyond their comfort zones and emerge stronger and more confident individuals.

The plethora of exhilarating activities offered at PGL Liddington left everyone in awe. The students couldn't get enough of the zip wire, canoeing, trapeze, and vertical challenge. However, it was the giant swing that stole the show, provoking a mix of excitement and nervous anticipation among the participants.

Watching Mr Bloch conquer his fears on the swing was a particularly unforgettable moment! Evenings were filled with camaraderie and laughter as the group engaged in various games, including the beloved "Capture the Flag." Another highlight of the week was the silent disco, where the students showcased some impressive dance moves, proving that their energy knew no bounds.

Accommodation was provided in dormitories, with 4 to 6 students in each room. The peaceful coach ride home indicated that everyone was thoroughly exhausted by the end of the week. The impact of the Year 6 trip to Liddington was undeniable. The students returned as better communicators, teammates and risk-takers. Roll on summer 2024!

Year 1 Windsor Castle

Year 1 had a fantastic trip to Windsor Castle and were blessed with glorious weather. We headed straight for the world famous Queen Mary's dolls house, followed by witnessing the changing of the guard. The children were fascinated to see the chapel where Queen Elizabeth II was laid to rest. Finally, a visit to the State Apartments and a very entertaining workshop starring our very own Mr Whitworth as King John, who was very displeased with the introduction of the Magna Carta. A superb trip where lasting memories were made for everyone involved.
